Kim Soo-hyun plays the fool for Covertly, Grandly’s first teaser

Thank goodness Covertly, Grandly looks hilarious, which is a relief since there are two ways this kind of wacky, outrageous premise can go: awesome, or cringeworthy. The movie is a spy-action-comedy starring Kim Soo-hyun (The Moon That Embraces the Sun) as an elite, even legendary North Korean spy sent on a mission to South Korea… with a cover as the village idiot. HA.

We get to see both sides in the new teaser released this week, where we first see him dressed in his military uniform and receiving orders. He takes his job seriously, even when that means playing the fool, grinning doofily and tripping all over himself as he establishes his new persona. Gone is the sharp agent Won Ryu-hwan, to be replaced with that shabby green tracksuit, a messy bowl cut, and the much less cool-sounding name of Bang Dong-gu.

But then! One day the phone rings, and he’s called into action. Enter two other North Korean agents, played by Park Ki-woong (Gaksital) and Lee Hyun-woo (To the Beautiful You). They’re also operating under their own disguised identities — Park Ki-woong’s orangey hair is thanks to his idol-wannabe cover, while Lee Hyun-woo plays a strictly disciplined spy who’s disguised as a flower boy high school student. Haha.

The teaser is super short, but I do find it a relief to see that the action bits look more cool than silly. That’s always the risk you run when smashing together the action and comedy genres (cautionary tales: Myung-wol the Spy, Level 7 Civil Servant — the drama, that is), though when you do it well it all adds up to brisk, fun summer blockbuster. It probably isn’t a movie you’ll want to analyze to pieces, but as a popcorn flick with tons of laughs (and an eye candy cast comprised of pretty boys who are actually talented actors) — I’m there.

It looks as though the production is preparing to unleash a barrage of promos and teasers in the coming days; their website denotes nine teasers in all, each with their own launch date. The first was released this week, and the second will be unveiled next Monday. I’m sure we can expect a steady stream leading up to the film’s June release.

awww Park Ki Woong! I absolutely love him and it is not exaggeration. not romantically. he is one of those talented people in this lovely world who you would want to protect and care for like a mother lion. you know, like make sure the path is clear and relieve all stress and just would want to assist if you knew how and if it were possible. that is a rare talent.
and with the situation between two Koreas, I worry for everyone who goes to army in the South ...

Noooo! Shunji will surely be missed!! I can't still forget his role in Gaksital. Btw, PKW already had the idol character in Full House, I hope with the idol-in-disguise antic, this time it would be ridiculously better. Who's excited? :D

Redfox, you're totally right with Park Ki-woong's talent. His range of talent is the best thing you would love about this guy. :) As for the war between two Koreas, we should blame the Kims for that! Lol.

So I watched both Full House 2 and Gaksital at the same time...biggest mind blown ever!!!! Park Ki Woong is such a fabulous actor that he totally managed to play the tragic villain that was Shunji while pulling off the love struck idol. Basically, he is freakin amazing and I can't wait to see him.

But noooOoOoOOoOOoOooooooooo I didn't know he was going to the army! I just found him.....*SIGH*

At least Kim Soo-hyun will still be around. Yum.

@Miss D

Totally agree, biggest mind blown ever, even bigger than Joo Won in 1N2D and Gaksital....2 years is a long time w/out our Shunji!:)

Nooooo... not park ki woong too! How will I survive without his awesomey goodness for two whole freakin' years?! Wahhhhhh.... T_T

Please somebody sub this movie. Please let this movie be good. Please let park ki woong be awesome in it. Please...

Is that last picture of Lee Hyun-woo? I'm having trouble recognizing him without that awful mushroom haircut from To The Beautiful You. XD And Park Ki-woong with orange hair again? At least it isn't permed. I wonder if the writer came up with the idea for his idol cover after seeing Full House 2...

I can't wait to see this movie.

Park Ki-woong disguising as his character from Full House 2 &
Lee Hyun-woo as his pretty boy character from To the Beautiful You. LOLS

Looking forward to this one, and other future KSH projects. I really hope he keeps picking projects that stretch him to the fullest of his abilities.

This sounds like mainstream fare, but if it's done well it could be fabulous fun and with the two contrasting sides (spy vs. fool) KSH should be able to show quite a bit of his acting range.

I like his village fool look, reminds me of Sam-dong times (before the haircut) and that's a sweet memory!

I wish it were/would be a summer blockbuster here...

But if it does well in Korea, there's a good chance it could end up at London Korean Film Festival in the autumn.

Indeed. Back then when I watched Dream High,I mainly tuned in for Samdong. Back then,it was like a breath of fresh of air seeing him bring the sincerity and a certain air of loofness to it. THE MEMORIES. I absolutely adored Samdong even back from his country bumpkin days. HE WAS THE STAR OF THE SHOW.

I was wondering about that...given the current heightened tensions, including threats of war, nuclear missile tests, and the shutdown of the North/South manufacturing facility.
Will audiences be attracted to a comedic look at North/South relations, or will they be repelled by the trivialization of the current situation?

people in korea aren't nearly as worried about things as people in like, the US are. its business as usual here.. i'd be more surprised if the NK/SK theme did deter people from seeing it, tbh

I can't wait to watch this! I have the 2-volume book version of the original webtoon (with the same name) and love it to bits. I've read the story three times and still cry each time. The story is certainly hilarious and has a comedic slant, but its greater appeal is its heart and warmth that will make you bawl like a baby.

I am kinda hoping it'll be darker instead of just funny. I agree, Spy Myung Wol and Level 7 Civil Servant did not live up to expectations, lets hope this movie will do better.

Kim Soo-hyun's appearance as the "village idiot", green tracksuit and hairdo and all, reminds of a Gag.Con corner "Geojedo Island" (a real island located in South Gyeongsangdo Province, hence the Gyeongsang satoori used) starring Jeong Tae-ho, Shin Bora, & Kim Min-gyeong. Heeheehee~~~! I wouldn't be surprised if he uses satoori again~!!!

And. Park Ki-woong! Lee Hyeon-wo!

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH~!!!
