Sword and Flower lands one lead, still casting others
by | April 25, 2013 | 27 Comments

Casting continues on KBS’s Sword and Flower, with one actress confirming and another issuing the usual “maybe, we’re considering it, nothing’s final” statement. This is the show looking to reunite Uhm Tae-woong with his Equator Man director, although Uhm is not yet confirmed either; it’ll be a sageuk set in the Goguryeo era with lovers torn apart by family strife and revenge. The plot centers around the heroine’s father being killed by the illegitimate son of his enemy, and then the kiddos falling in love.

The first to confirm is Park Su-jin, who is an actress I can take or leave; I always want to like her more, but she always plays the same bratty role. Flower Boy Next Door and My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho, for instance. But on the upside, although her role is described as a leading one, it isn’t the heroine and Juliet figure in the main romance. She’ll still have some sort of loveline with our hero, though I suspect it may be a one-sided variety (Park tends to specialize in those), and as she’s currently training in martial arts and horseback riding I’m guessing she plays a bodyguard or tomboy sort.

Kim Ok-bin is the other actress being mentioned, and her reps are taking a much more careful stance in saying that this is just one of several projects she’s considering. I like her much better than Park Su-jin, and would love to see her opposite the Uhmforce in a melo sageuk romance; she’s one of those actresses who started out rather rough but has really improved over the years (past projects include the films The Front Line, Thirst, and Actresses). She hasn’t done a drama in years, not since 2007’s War of Money, although she was just in the drama’s weird “Bonus Round” afterword; her last full series was the really boring idol-dancer-wannabe series Over the Rainbow in 2006.

Sword and Flower will take up the Wednesday-Thursday timeslot after Mandate of Heaven wraps, which could be a nice baton pass from one well-produced thriller sageuk to another. It’ll premiere in July.

I wish I could see Jung Hye Young with a lead role in this, instead of buried down in the cast of Gu Family Book; I still remember how she knocked it out of the park playing the mom in The Return of Iljimae.

Have to agree with your take on Park Su Jin – she’s always the ‘brat’ in dramas. It would be nice to see her try on a different role.

That header pic of her is just plain terrible – it makes her look like 20 miles of bad road…..

I love Kim Ok Bin… I would die (of happiness) if she confirms.

Is this the drama that both Park Shin Hye and Yoona rejected?

    • 4.1 haha

YoonA rejected? lol where did u get it? there are many rumors about this drama but I doubt that the YoonA’s one is true
And it was official that PSH rejected is as she accepted Heirs because news came out she considered this earlier

There is no new on other actors and actresses, just Park Shin Hye and a bit of Lee Min Jung

i don’t believe rumour about yoona, if she get this offer she must be accept this because it’s honour for her

      • 4.1.2 sili

What ? There was a news about Yoona and Son Dam Be being considered and that Yoona is the first choice! Also information from SM said they rejected the role because of SNSD upcoming World Tour!

So Yoona was the strong rumor, even on korean cites she was the fron runner!

yes, Yoona rejected! this is true!. but yoona has many concert international. I do not know if she will have enough time to act. because   She has an agenda supercharged

Honestly, I like to see YOONA in her next drama or movie. YOONA IS VERY GOOD ACTRESS!…you’re my destiny was a succesful. she won many many awards!. She is a proffesional!

At least Yoona is out. Whew! Those rumors that went around a while were terrifying.

I know right. I’m not so fond of Park Soo Jin either but I’ll take her over Yoona any day.

      • 5.1.1 JC

I actually like Yoona better than Park Sujin. :’D
I mean, her acting is rough, but she has a sort of natural presence on film that makes her fairly likeable.

I do want to see Park Sujin break out of her typecast, however, since I think she can do more than just always being the whiny second lead.

I liked her in Love Rain, she had decent chemistry with Jang Geun-seok but she was drawing a lot on her irl personality and he was pulling most of the weight, acting-wise – I very much doubt she’s developed the chops to do a sageuk in the year since.

(not to mention how mismatched she’d look next to Uhm Tae-woong, I remember actually being excited for this when I thought Park Shin-hye and Song Joong-ki might be the leads)

      • 5.2.1 HelenT.

I would say YOONA & JANG KEUN SUK was one of the BEST CHEMICAL in the world of drama, especially in the era of 2012 with Hana (YOONA) and Seo joon (JANG KEUN SUK).

this drama and couple are so epic and amazing!

Yoona in her first drama “You’re My destiny” did a excellent and good job acting, she was so natural, she won a lot awards (Yoona just with 3 dramas won many awards). of course, She did a good job in love rain.

Jang Keun Suk is a good actor, but I think that Jang keun suk polished and perfected his acting in love rain.

    • 5.3 HelenT.

sincerelly, I prefer YOONA’s acting, she is good actress!
you should to see You’re my destiny and love rain!

YOONA has a lot potential acting. I am waiting for her next drama!

PARK SOO JIN!!! Yes, that’s my girl! Will totally be watching this for her ! Love this girl since her Sugar days ever since I discovered her on Love Letter 🙂 She has such a sweet appearance, loveeeeeeeeeeee her!

  7. Revy

I really hope Ok Bin says yes

  8. crazedlu

hrm. i actually think uhm taewoong and kim okbin really match the goguryeo era. guess we’ll see.

  9. anais

I really liked Kim Ok Bin in Actresses, which she doesn’t get credited on DramaWiki strangely. Anyhow, just read this about her on Wiki: ” As a child she trained in martial arts,[1] and has attained third dan in Hapkido and second dan in Taekwondo; she also practices Muay Thai[3] and Boxing.” She apparently wanted to be a police officer prior to becoming an actress. How awesome would that be then to have an actress who can kick ass be cast as a Goguryeo Juliet – hoping – who kicks ass?

    • 9.1 Bengbeng

wow! I am also wishing for badass Juliet =) Ok Bin can be tough and rough as I’ve seen in her movies

  10. 10 snow_white

I don’t like Park Su Jin’s acting..she really annoyed me in FBND and MGIAG..but may be it’s because her roles were like that..she was okay in boys before flowers..

    • 10.1 a_diva

i don’t like park sujin as an actress either, and i don’t think it’s the roles she has played. she often does play the mean b!$%hy girl, but every drama has the mean girl antagonist. i usually don’t like the b!$%hy antagonist in the dramas but i can usually manage to like the actress playing the role or appreciate the skill in which she portrays the character. i’ve never been able to do that with sujin, not even in boys before flowers where she was nice. in bbf she was boring and not believable.

but there’s always hope she will get better. she definitely works consistently enough. shouldn’t all that experience eventually lead to an improvement in her skills??

  11. 11 Duh-duh

I have a strange liking for Ok-bin for no reason.

I hope to see her again in a new project. Even though, the plot sounds typical.

  12. 12 Peeps

I dunno if it’s just me, but Kim OkBin look a little like Ueno Juri in the above picture. Especially the smile.

I’m not really sure what to think of this Goguryeo Makjang-i-fied Romeo and Juliet story (not that R and J was not makjang enough)… so… I guess I’ll have to wait till it hits the tv screens.

  13. 13 Guest

I must be the only one who likes Park Sujin… I first saw her in Unexpected You and thought she looked really fresh, clean and “natural”. I always squeal whenever I see her smile.

  14. 14 maldita

For once, I wish Park Soojin gets a “nice girl” role. She always gets the bratty girl roles and it’s typecasted her as is. She does okay with those roles, but I always wonder if she’ll do better in nice girl roles.

  15. 15 Jackie

Park Soo Jin can just go far… far away

  16. 16 HelenT.

Yoona or Im Yoona is a natural and good actress. I’m really looking forward for her new drama or movie.
please Yoona! comfirmed her next drama or movie!.
