Kim Jae-won and Jo Yoon-hee star in weekend drama Scandal

Well that’s a saucy title. If your drama’s called Scandal, it’d better raise some temperatures to live up to its name. MBC has a new weekend drama in the works that’s set to follow Hundred Year Inheritance, and Kim Jae-won (May Queen) and Jo Yoon-hee (Nine) have signed on to headline. Well at least Kim Jae-won dropping the Lee Bo-young drama doesn’t mean it’ll take any longer to see him back on the small screen.

The new drama comes from the PD of East of Eden (he’s since worked on Best Love and Golden Time, but not as the head PD), and the writer of Twinkle Twinkle and Who Are You. The story doesn’t sound any different from the average weekend fare though: Kim Jae-won stars as a hotheaded detective who falls for “a beautiful woman” and lands in some sort of scandal with her. That’s literally the heroine’s main descriptor — that she’s beautiful. She’s even got a pun-name, meaning “elegant beauty.” Yes, but does she have a job? A tick? I’ll take anything.

In the course of the drama, the hero will come to discover that his own father was the man who kidnapped him when he was a child. So, family birth secrets and violent skeletons in the closet? Somehow I was expecting more scandalous affairs, less kidnapping. But the romance seems to be on the lighter side of things, described as an earnest relationship with a heroine who’s bright and cheery.

I still have yet to figure out what is so scandalous about falling for the girl, unless she’s married, a convicted criminal, a fellow detective in your no-dating precinct, or the Bacall to your Bogart. Either this drama is hiding a deep dark secret, or it should be renamed Vanilla.

Scandal is gearing up for a July premiere on MBC.

Haha Vanilla.

There will NEVER be a weekend drama that doesn't have birth secrets, slapping, almost sibling relationships. Mothers... more evil mothers.

Plus lots of idiotic storylines.
But scandals? Woo... maybe we will have a shotgun wedding?

I feel like weekend dramas are the closest to American soap operas, lol. Birth secrets?? You can never have too many of those!

The plot sounds rather boring (vanilla, like you said lol) and do we really need another "bright and happy" heroine? Would dramaland break if she was a normal person with flaws and off-days?

But this is an unexpected yet cute couple. I LOVE KJW and am glad to see he will be back on the small screen. And JYH won me over in Unexpected You. She's not a great actress but she has a really nice down-to-earth charm.

Plus I loved Who Are You and enjoyed the portion of Twinkle Twinkle that I watched, so I'm hoping the writer will give a fresh feel to this very tired weekend-drama storyline (I also hope it's 20 episodes rather than 50).

Thanks for the news! :)

Vanilla indeed. lol. Looks like KJW has a subscription for MBC weekends dramas. It works for him (at least in the ratings) so I can understand.
"Dad kidnapped him as a child." Smells parents separation gone wrong... Let's hope the main characters will not discover they are siblings AFTER falling in love. MBC WE dramas tend to be crazy ridiculous/makjangy so I won't dare to hope.

I read that Jo Yoon-Hee's character is a single mum. I don't think that's very scandalous, but hey. I don't think I've ever seen a young single mum in a kdrama before.

Aside from the kidnapping thing (jeez, they just had to get something really dramatic in there, didn't they) this could be really, really cute. And I really like Kim Jae Won's smile. So I think I'm in!!

We kind of have a young, single mom in You're the Best, Lee Soon Shin, but her divorce is a big secret... maybe it really is scandalous!

Apparently, being a single mum, a divorced woman, a widow, or a woman living with a man without being married, are still big "sins" in K dramaland. I suspect (hope) that the younger audience has a more modern approach of those kind of situations.

Oh, I read "single mom" as being unmarried, single mom. Because that's really what would be a scandalous thing in korea. Being divorced, or a widow raising a child isn't considered "shameful" anymore, but being a unmarried mother still is- the attitude of the parents in the recent kdrama Childless Comfort is pretty much spot-on in terms of how most korean parents would react to their daughter saying "I'm not getting married, but I'm going to have a baby and raise it myself." Anything other than that is hardly "scandalous." But maybe it just seems very tame in comparison to the American tv show Scandal, where apparently crazy stuff DOES happen every week. I would love it if kdramas got a little more creative in their "scandalous" storylines and moved away from the kidnappings, birth secrets, etc. in the usual makjang fare.

We have a mom that becomes single (divorced) in A Thousand Kisses and is treated so cruelly that I had to stop watching. Even more so, because the drama's final message about this divorced woman and that the people who mistreated her simply got away with it was appalling.

It says on the other sites that Kim Jae Won and Jo Yoon Hee characters will be working on a scandal and on the process they will fall in love. there is a possibility that they work together. That means they are not the one who get into scandal. If the the other site news got it right. :-D

The first time i read it on Korean sites, it really scares me to death. I thought Kim Jae Won oppa got into trouble. Scandal sounds really shocking. Specially when it came out on the headlines and says "Kim Jae Won and Jo Yoon Hee caught up into Scandal" … But luckily it's just a drama. :-D
I can't imagine KJW get into a big scandal.

Anyway, the title sounds like a conspiracy. Im just wondering who really get into scandal. KJW character is a detective it can't be him. It must be a high profile person like politician or artist. So, who is he going to investigate ?

Agreed pretty vanilla. My overactive imagination is thinking what scandal? Her baby daddy is his daddy? Or they are long lost siblings?

Probably more like she's divorced, or he was involved in her husbands death, and/or she is the daughter of his boss or a gangster boss.

this is the plot given on soompi.

****Story* : ***하은중 Ha Eun Joong**** (Kim Jae Won) was kidnapped in an act of revenge when he was really young by the man who believed that Eun Joong's real father was the mastermind behind the collapsed buildingincident that killed his son. Eun Joong who grew up to be a policeman, was shocked to find out the truth that the father he loved so much was actually his kidnapper. His life began to get entwined with 우아미 Woo Ah Mi (Jo Yun Hee), a 26 year old single mom as he seeks out the meaning of life after encountering numerous despairs and tries to heal the wounds in his heart.

There's nothing scandalous on the plot. Maybe they save it to give more thrill. :-D Jo Yoon Hee character is a single mom but i don't think it will be scandalous if KJW character as detective will fall in love with her. She must be a divorce otherwise why would she get involve into another man right?

Since he was in, I'm defenitely in too. :)

Hmmn. I really enjoyed Who Are You (YKS rocked the dual roles), but Twinkle Twinkle, not so much. The OTP's story was sweet and there were a couple of other elements I liked, but it basically devolved into a mediocre makjang like so many other weekend dramas.

I have a feeling I'm always gonna think of this new drama as Vanilla. Another reason it's an apt title is 'cause it'd be hard to find two more vanilla-y actors. (If the name were changed to Vanilla, we, db fans of the drama, could call ourselves Vanilla Beans!)

Twinkle Twinkle, in the long run, was a snoozefest + an evil person fest with lots of stupid thrown in.
BUT BUT BUT the love story between the Editor and the Fake Daughter was amazing at the start, anyway.

If they could just keep all that other crap out of it....

It really makes me wonder why they choose the title "SCANDAL". I know there's a lot of scandal going on in SK right now, but nothing mention on the plot how scandal could be possible. Eun Joong (Kim Jae Won) is a detective, while Ah Mi (Jo Yoon Hee) is a cheery single mom. Both are simple characters, it coudn't be them involving into scandal.
It must be related to those people surround them. Eun Joong was kidnap as a child, his family or foster father might itn some kind of conspiracy. Or maybe it's Ah Mi family.

Will, let's see.. i'm really curious on this drama. And given that it was KJW, im surely not gonna miss it. :) JYH is cute with a long hair, i hope they change her hairstyle for the drama.

It'd be kind of awesome if she was a bright and cheery hooker/hostess/exotic dancer or something. Yes. Perfect. The pun name would make more sense even and I imagine that would be a pretty natural run in to have. That may be too scandalous for the weekend though, I guess. Not exactly sure if being a hostess is illegal but it would make for a good conundrum since he's on the side of the law and all. That and dealing with his family issues would probably be interesting.

That's the only way I could swing things for now.

You all laugh at vanilla while I shudder.
True story:
I was lying in bed and suddenly my husband sat up straight and loudly whispered "VA - NILLLLLL ---AH!" He may have well have said "I will KILL YOU!" I was that frightened.

Ever since then, he'll pop out of nowhere and say:
"VA - NILLLLLL ---AH!" in his murderous whisper

Scares the crap out of me. Everytime. LOL

What if Ah Mi's character is a socialite, or came from a high profile family. She had a secret child, that's why she is a single mom as mention. then here's come detective Eun Joong who is invistigating a case which coincidentally related to Ah Mi's family. By accident Eun Joong found out about Ah Mi's secret. Then because he was fallen to her, he was force to pretend to be the father of the child to protect her image... hehehehe that sounds complicated... :) i don't know how to get out of it. you guys, guess what's next..

I think something wrong with your eyes better go and see a doctor before it get worst. If you had nothing good to say, better not say anything. You are judging a person without even knowing him well. almost 99% of his fans love him for having such a sweet and gentle smile. Are you going to say also that all his fans can't see what is real or plastic?

What always happens is USUALLY the plot summary is something generic and the story takes a spin on it in a unique way, whether it be in a GOOD or BAD way. I really dislike how people keep making the mistake of judging the promo before even watching it. That being said, I dislike Jo Yoon Hee as an actress. She is so dry...I liked her in Unexpected You but it was mostly because her partner (male) carried like 90% of the relationship and she just did the rest.

i thought he is only around early twenties... :) But i don't mind. He is double my age but i still think he is my first love.. fighting oppa. Gonna wait for you.

Perhaps the female love interest could be the illegitimate daughter of the father/kidnapper. That would make them, what, adopted sibs? More scandal! Or perhaps we find out birth father is hot for generic-female-love-interest, and hence a father/son fight for her? Or maybe his blood brother is the father of her child, and he abandoned both mother and child, only to come back later and want to steal child back? Ah, Weekend Dramas, you have so many super cheesy ways to go. Let's hope you pick an actual scandalous path!

Maybe the SCANDAL is about a case that they are going to solve. Ha Eun Joong (Kim Jae Won) is a detective. The possibilities of solving a huge scandal is more likely to happen rather than getting into a scandal itself. :)
