Moon Chae-won offered lead in Green Scalpel

Ooh. Suddenly interested in Green Scalpel, although Moon Chae-won isn’t yet confirmed; she’s only said to be considering the drama. Still, she adds a dash of interest to the medical series starring Joo-won as an autistic savant who’s a surgical genius with the personality of a grade-schooler.

The role Moon Chae-won is up for is of a pediatric surgeon named Cha Yoon-seo, which should offer up an interesting dynamic between her and the lead. Cha Yoon-seo chooses to become a doctor after volunteering in a children’s cancer ward in high school, and with her hard work and brains she becomes an associate professor at a relatively young age. She’s got an easy-going personality with a tomboyish nature, which is a bit of a departure but also totally up her alley. Moon may have played chic and steely in Nice Guy and portrayed a proud princess in The Princess’s Man, but she’s got the ability to play approachable and artless as well.

Plus, while age is but a number in real-life romance, I do think it’s more interesting to give the hero a potential love interest whose age disparity is on an emotional level without also being reflected in their real ages. Were this a noona relationship where the heroine is older both physically and mentally, that would just feel like too much power imbalance for comfort. (Note: The drama description does not promise romance. However, you don’t cast Joo-won and Moon Chae-won and then ignore romance, do you? I’d be happy with a romance-less story of human bonding and relationships, but I’m not sure dramaland really knows how to do that yet.)

Well, let’s hope that Moon Chae-won accepts the offer, ’cause I love her and find her one of her generation’s more compelling actresses. Also, she keeps improving from project to project, which is a good sign in any actor. Also also, I’ve only ever liked Joo-won with one of his leading ladies (UEE) and found that the relationships greatly suffered when there wasn’t that spark. (Jin Se-yeon was very green next to him, and Choi Kang-hee was never paired with him in any drama or ever shall be, the end.) Fingers crossed that these two will have it.

Green Scalpel will follow Shark and premiere in August.

I really don't want to be so squicked out by something she's in though... and I thought she outgrew Candy roles (if you read her character description, she's supposed to a righteous doctor who wants to change the world, yada yada yada. I'm sure that all goes out the window once she becomes the target of the male lead's fixation) :-((((

That drama wasn't likely due to her own choosing. Lols, it was more a management call with a deal for a drama filled with rookie idols-turned-actors. Or she wouldn't have been so keen to switch management after that drama. Great to see you here, Jillia!

Actually, that was her very first drama with her new (and current agency), MS Team. It was also her first lead drama, so yes, don't think she had much say on that

Annyeong @Kgrl! :D Ah thank you so much. I wasn't following the news regarding "It's okay Daddy's girl" and Moon Chae Won at that time, so I didn't know it was the decision of her management. :)

And yes I agree, we really need more details about her character and hopefully some development, so she won't be a small female lead. :D

0

Jillia, Kgrl, whee! *big hugs* I'm so thrilled about this! Can't wait to see MCW on screen again.

I agree with you...bcoz this recent year MCW really Best of the BEST actress in Korea..It's not only about her management decision.,but also on herself..Its either the script was good or not.,it's all depend on herseft..I'm not really interest in MEdical typey of drama.,and not a big fan of Joo Won...,but seriously.,If the drama got Moon Chae Won as the leading actress then, that drama is a MUST WATCH MUST HITS...

JB said this, "I’d be happy with a romance-less story of human bonding and relationships, but I’m not sure dramaland really knows how to do that yet." And I agree with her. I too, would love it, if it were a romance-less story about human bonding and relationships. They could do so much with that.

I don't see how her being dumb would make it any more morally acceptable. It's not about intelligence but one's life experience/decision-making faculties that makes relationships between children/adolescents and adults unacceptable and why we consider it statutory rape, right?

But I dunno. I've always loved Big, and I don't see them even going that far as that movie did. As long as it's handled sweetly and delicately, I think this can avoid being too squicky. And in this case, even though he has the personality of a fourth-grader, he's still physiologically an adult with the same amount of life experience as she would have. But it is a little weird, no doubt.

"...autistic savant who’s a surgical genius with the personality of a grade-schooler."

Let's get a bit technical here. *puts on professional hat*

When we say someone has autism, it means the person has difficulties in three areas ("triad of impairment"):
1. Social interaction (building relationships with others, understanding turn-taking and non-verbal cues)
2. Social communication (use and interpretation of language -- difficulties with figurative/non-direct language)
3. Imaginative thought (flexibility to react to changes in routine, perspective-taking)

Because it's what we call a spectrum disorder, no two people with autism are exactly alike. Some may have greater deficits in some of these areas. Their cognitive profiles may also be very different.

According to the description, it sounds like Joo Won's character has a cognitive level that is probably pretty high ('surgical genius'). In addition, he's a savant, which means he is exceptionally gifted in one area (surgical knowledge?).

The difficulty is that his character probably has problems interacting with people ('grade-school personality'), and probably has poorer social skills. It doesn't mean that he's incapable of wanting friendships or even romance -- it just means he doesn't quite know how to approach someone for it.

Haha. Love your remarks re Joo Won leading lady.

Thank god, an actress not too painful to watch, acting by side with this boy.

This is one interesting pairing for Joo Won after Uee. Let's see if Moon Chae Won can take away Uee's spot in MY LIST.

Joo Won + Uee = Ojakgyo Brother beautiful love story.

Joo Won + Moon Chae Won + Director of Ojakgyo Brother = Hopefully for another beautiful love story.

Moon Chae Won shi.. go for it. Go grab this opportunity.. grab Joo Won. LOL.

I know, Joo Won and UEE was just effortless, you could really see they're chemistry. Also it helped that it was a long family drama were the relationship grows naturally without that much pressure to be together so fast.
The right drama, with the right people is always magic. :D
Here's hoping for this one!

for the UEE thing, it mightve been more natural since it was a lengthy project whereas the others are not. Even the audience had time to grow and accept the romances, which is often why pairings in family dramas work

It was a secondary thing, but I did really like the chemistry between Joo Won and Han Chae-ah in "Gaksital". Also, liked the chemistry between him and Eugene in "Baker King". Those two and Uee were good pairings. Other than that... agreed. :)

Since then she is continually improving, which is something I always like to see in actors/actresses. Even if she isnt the strongest actress out there, she definitely has a charm and i always like to watch her in her characters. She's also only 26 so she has a long way ahead of her to go. Even so, i do think shes one of the stronger actresses in her generation.

I have mixed feelings about this news. For MCW's benefit, I don't know if I want her to participate. It's definitely going to be predominantly male character development rather than female...and she's been very keen on choosing roles she can really learn and have great interest in.

Let's hope if CW is confirmed, the writer will do a little bit more in developing her role than his previous works.

Yeah, but they usually don't get the whole script. Most of the time, actors were only given a long summary of the plot..so from that, it might dive more sageuk vibe than the actual drama. But she had said right after finished filming for TPM that she is afraid of being stereotyped as sageuk actress since at that year, her two hit projects were both sageuk. And she wanted to try modern drama to change the sageuk image

0

It’s definitely going to be predominantly male character development rather than female…

This is the only thing that causes me to balk a little - even if Nice Guy was centred on its male lead, her part wasn't just some pretty girl on the sidelines.

The character descriptions at this stage of a drama production are pretty rudimentary, so until August there can still happen a LOT with it. I don't think he will be like a child - just childlike due to him being autistic.

And we really don't know IF there will be any romance in involved in this drama - like javabeans said. :)

The story isn’t that unrealistic actually. Autism is such a vague word, people fall on different levels of autism; it’s a spectrum. Lots of people have a high functioning type of autism; asperger. People with asperger have high IQs and believe it or not, but they end up having professional careers. It is believed that Einstein had a form of aspergers. Anyways, the whole medical career thing is believable if Joo won’s character is diagnosed with aspergers. Anyone with autism would have social skill problems, its just how severe it can be.

Savants are relatively rare, though. I kinda think it does a disservice to autistic people to put the majority in the savant category--it really doesn't help to argue that autism is a spectrum....

People auto-think that all autism is for geniuses... but I'd like to see more of a range, the difficulties, etc. Instead of the fictionalized version being auto genius savant.

There are savants on toy cars, for example. Will that make it into a TV show? Probably not.

I mean, I quite like JW but I just think MCW-JSW will be one hot pairing. Oh writer-nim, if JW character is too child-like to even know love, let her be with JSW instead.

Nope, not the only one. I find that pairing intriguing also. I'll be surprised if she actually takes the role though. I've been on the fence with this drama, but if she really does take the role then that would definitely push me over in to must-watch territory.

Yep, interesting pairing indeed and JSW is one mighty fine man with good acting skill too. I enjoy his drama TEN so much. If she take this role, I will def. watch this even if the story hasn't won me over yet. Hope her character and the story will turn out good.

I was already on board when I heard its being written by God's Quiz's writer. So it could star three sticks....I'd still watch it.

I love the casting so far though. :D

This sounds like a drama that should be cast with 30 and 40yr olds (Like most medical kdramas- White Tower, Brain etc.), but they wanted to make it with young spritely actors so they made the characters..."geniuses" and "super hard workers." Lol.

Jury is out for me...I like Moon Chae Won and Joo Won, but I don't know about them together. I always think Moon Chae Won should be with an older male lead because she has such a presence on the screen that can easily overshadow others. I thought she was way more compelling than Song Joon Ki in Nice Guy, where he did not have the same level of acting that he had in A Werewolf Boy or in Tree with Deep Roots...And with the male character being childlike, IDK...

So yeah, jury's out.

i think MCW is good but i don't really want her in this drama, i think they had to choose older actress for this role, i agree with you that song jong ki not really good in nice guy but he's good in deep root tree

(Jin Se-yeon was very green next to him, and Choi Kang-hee was never paired with him in any drama or ever shall be, the end.)

HAHHAHA so hilarious JB.

I am so excited to see Joo Sang Wook confirmed in this drama together with Joo Won. I can already imagined the awesomeness they will bring to the drama. If Moon Chae Won will confirm this too, then I am even more excited. Not because I am looking forward towards their romance, I am actually hoping that the romance is not forced. I can imagine her with JSW's character but not JW's. How can a man with a social development of a 10 year old handle romance? Maybe the physical attraction but I can't see how they can engage each other. Let's see if the drama is able to handle this issue well.

I like MCW because she doesn't play dumb or the type of female characters who suddenly lose their intellect/composure/dignity when in love and not in a cute or funny way either. I couldn't bear the female lead character in Brain.

Okay... when is the news that Joo Sang Wook confirmed for this drama... I thought he was considering this.. Okay... I read earlier report that Kim So Hyun was thinking about it but then Joo Won now confirm lead.. hrmm.. Interesting... I am still thinking that it is MCW with Joo Won no chemistry at all.. I think if it is human bonding and friendship of all three and less romance story. Maybe.. But, as of now, I pray to the kdrama gods that she will decline this offer.
