Character stills for ghost melodrama Who Are You

You know, I was totally prepared to let this show slide under my radar because I’m up to my eyeballs in dramas right now, but then Kim Jae-wook had to go and sign on, and now I’m scouring the internet for stills. Bah. The new tvN ghost melodrama Who Are You stars So Yi-hyun and Taecyeon as a pair of cops; she sees ghosts and he’s a skeptic. Toss in one dead ex-boyfriend who’s visible to no one but her, and you’ve got one strange love triangle with potential.

The stills aren’t that interesting, save for seeing the cop characters in uniform, though Kim Jae-wook in all white does make me laugh out loud. So we’re going literal with the ghosty concept, are we? Have we learned nothing from the Scheduler? You can be undead and still be rockin’ the latest fashions, you know.

So Yi-hyun stars as a cop who wakes up from a six-year coma and discovers that her boyfriend died in the crash that nearly killed her too. She has the newfound ability to see ghosts, which will start her on a journey of helping them fulfill their dying wishes and bits of unfinished business before passing on to the afterlife. She’ll clash with the hero, Taecyeon, who’s also a cop and a skeptic by nature who only believes in the things he can see for himself. They’re both assigned to the Lost and Found department (which sounds like cop punishment, but maybe that’s just me), and there they’ll encounter quirky cases involving the lost possessions of the living and the dead.

Complicating matters, of course, is her undead ex-boyfriend, whose unfinished business is her. I already love him more. Is there any way for him to get the girl? Think, people. We need to make this happen. The drama comes from the PD of To My Beloved and Daemul and the writer of I Love Lee Tae-ri and Style. None of those projects jump out at me as must-watch shows, so the jury’s still out on this one, but based on the writer we can expect some laughs amidst the “poignant human drama” that this show is going for.

Who Are You follows current Monday-Tuesday drama Dating Agency Cyrano and premieres July 29 on tvN.

Disturbing how?
I found it to be a sweet, lyrical piece of fantasy writing with the characters and plot hitting all the right beats - and considerably WAY better than BIG that was airing over the same time period.

If the writer continues to be as invested in her new drama as she was in Tae Ri, this will be another winner for her.

You mean the age of the hero was not disturbing to you? Even if he jumped into his 25 year old body, he's still only 12. That's pedophilia.

I don't mind age gaps...hell even 20...but it has to be 20&40 not 15 &35 if u know what I mean....no minors..haha..so LTR was disturbing like that....but it was well written...

It was all weird. On the plus side, after she realized he wasn't the body's age, she started treating him by his real age. Which turned it back into the safe land of teen hormones. (Question? Do teens have teen hormones in adult bodies? That would be an actual fun exploration of the body change concept)

I agree! I keep wondering if it was just me who found the concept of a really old (she was like 40+ right?) and a kid that is not even 20 yet disturbing! :/ It feels all wrong to me!

She tends to look older than her real age on camera.

I'm so torn.....on one hand, it's Kim Jae-wook's comeback and I should watch, on the other hand, he's the second lead and the first lead is one of the worst actors I've ever seen in anything (even Hand Towel was better, in WAML)

These stills pushed me into the Will Not Watch column. They remind me of everything I do not like about the leads (with the added bonus of Taec looking like a high schooler in cosplay, LOL), and I am irrationally irritated that they made KJW look dead - I know he is supposed to be dead, but do ghosts have to wear white makeup and be expressionless? I want something more like the Captain in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, and I don't think I am going to get it.

Oh yeah, such a beautiful movie, gorgeously shot and of course Gene Tierney herself is gorgeous!

Story-wise, this may be more "Laura" than G & Mrs M (i.e. where the cop falling in love with a dead girl - no more spoilers, I promise!)... Also a happy ending.

The storyline kinda reminds me of X-Files, as someone's mentioned, and also for some reason... Me Too, Flower - maybe it's the female cop theme.

But - then again - maybe her BF isn't dead-dead, but is also lying around in a coma somewhere (in some remote village), and making out-of-body visits to his GF?!

You covered everything I wanted to say except with the addition that Taecyeon's expression doesn't change which doesn't bode well for me for a lead character.

The chemistry between Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison! That movie had a happy ending with a dead guy. Perhaps gf can get her wish after all.

Ei!... I bet you, given that Taecyeon is much younger in the industry, he'll be much much better than Hand Towel who's been there and that but still can't act. But I'm not gonna lie, this is not on my watch list. Although it's interesting that these three were once Moon Geun Young's co-actor ih her last three dramas. Maybe give MGY a cameo (given that TvN has a penchant for having big stars cameo on their shows), then I'll be the first in line to watch it.

The story sounds soooooo old and boring. Moreover I don't get the idea of dead people lingering after their death for some super important business which is usually telling a girl that they love her. Pfft, that wakes the cynic in me.
On the other hand I've been missing KJW a lot and wouldn't like to miss his comback.
Actually, I like this writer's Lee Tae Ri and Dear You by the PD. Both stories were made better than their descriptions suggested.
I guess I'll have to see the actual thing before I decide it's not for me :)

The PD of Daemul ? I loved that drama ! Go Hyun Jung and Kwon Sang Woo were amazing ;)

Oh gosh', Cyrano ends 22th July ??? Gosh', I don't want it to end --' It became soooo good.
But this drama looks interesting even though I have been disappointed so many times after saying that lol. Instead of Lost and Found department, I thought they would instigate murders/lost/kidnapping ... etc. Everything involving the use of ghosts a la Medium/Ghost Whisperers. I don't know, it would have been cool to have a korean version of these shows adding with romance and humor :D
But heey, it may be not bad though.

The basic story sounds like the novel, Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands. Except I am sure this drama's heroine won't end with both of them.

Well, the obvious way for Kim Jae Wook to get the girl is for her to die too. Right?

Kind of hard for him to come back to life, but easy-peasy to kill off a drama heroine. And they can be adorable in heaven together. Maybe the first time a main lead character's death actually results in an HEA.

I agree, she must die. But make it a heroic death, somehow involving the other detective so he can wake up seeing ghosts! lol Then our couple can take the elevator up.

One very compelling reason to watch this drama.

I'll second what Rashell said. Drama, please kill off the heroine so that her and KJW can live happily ever after in the afterlife.

Has this writer decided that they want to be in direct competition with the Hong Sisters every year or is this just an unhappy coincidence? Cause wow, two years in a row, similar drama concepts aired at the same time...Conspiracy or Chance?

If I try this, there is a high likelyhood I'll be rooting for Kim Jae Wook. I watched Mary Stays Out All Night right after You're Beautiful because I was on JKS high, but KJW still managed to get me rooting for him. Then again, looking critically at that drama...might not have been that difficult :)

Seems so dull. But I'll give it a watch for first impressions. If they had casted a different leading lady, I might've been more intrigued. So Yihyun is so mediocre. I'm sure she'll do little with this role. Shrugs.*

I thought So Yi hyun was awesome in Cheongdamdong Alice. I'll definitely tune in to watch at least the first episode of this one. I'm intrigued by the idea of an afterlife, and the spirits of the dead having some bearing on the lives of the living, so I'll be interested in seeing how they handle this story. I don't really have much of an opinion about Taecyeon one way or the other. I didn't think he was that bad in Dream High, but I must say, his ears really distract me. They aren't entirely normal in my view, and it has nothing to do with the fact that they stick out from his head. Also, I've not yet seen anything featuring Kim Jae Wook, so I'll be interested in seeming what all the buzz is about.

Quote from Red:"Taec’s expression makes me laugh and cringe thinking about how hard its going to be for me to believe him as a cop."

Ha! That reminds me of when I saw an interview with Hyun Bin soon after he returned from the army. When asked what he would be doing if he weren't an actor, he said that prior to the acting bug biting, he'd had ambitions of being a police officer. I found that amusing/interesting. It's not that I don't think he might have been a very good cop (though not of the kind commonly portrayed in K-dramas---those feckless bumblers), but given how good he is at what he actually does, I have a hard time picturing him walking a beat, or riding around in a squad car for a living.

Seriously WHY did Kim Jae-wook pick this?? I like him. I want to see him. But not in this "I really really AM dead-see the white?" role.
Unless through some weird twist of fate he gets to be the main lead I don't get it!
Taecyeon does NOT look like main lead material. I don't see him having the talent. And honestly why are there SO MANY idols in main lead roles? I don't mind idols acting- they're not ALL bad. But why are there so many of them in the main character roles? Did we run of actors in Kdramaland?
Still. I might catch an episode if drama list is running low.

The cast is meh to me(except kim jae wook) and the stills aren't all that inspiring but that doesn't turn me off from tuning in. Too many times i've thought a project would suck and it ended up completely surprising me in the best of ways, or the highly anticipated ones end up sucking.
Either way, i'm giving Who Are You and Master's Sun equal chances and you can only tell once both shows air which one is qualitatively better.

haha, i didn't read any of the comments prior to posting mine, but you pretty much said the same thing i wrote! i agree with you wholeheartedly—the past year or two, i've learned not to dismiss dramas just because it lacked starpower or sounded blah from beginning. the ones i have ended up loving most started out exactly that way.

kay, now i think i'm actually looking forward to this drama, just to see if i could be right...

I'm on the same boat as everyone else. Kim Jae Wook is the only thing that's luring me into this. I'm not too fond of Taecyeon as an actor AND variety person (after WGM global edition)... :/ So I'll see if this drama can turn my opinion around.

this feels like a strange cast to me, lol. i love kim jae-wook, and so yi-hyun i feel like was always on that CUSP of being good.

but taecyeon... ermmmm... at least he doesn't annoy me too much?

still, i have my eye on this because a lot of dramas that i was initially very much "eh" about turned out to be beyond my expectations this last year or two. (off the top of my head: me too flower, i can hear your voice).

i'd be happy if this turned out to be any good. in fact, i hope so.

Girlfriday, I had the same thoughts as you! When my friend told me that Kim Jae Wook was going to be on this drama, my first reaction was, "No!!! Why did he have to sign on to this drama when I have already decided not to watch this drama?" Oh well, I shall give it a try since Kim Jae Wook is going to be on it. I am going to cross my fingers and hope that at least the storyline will be engaging enough to let me finish the whole drama.

Jae Wook Ghost: And a good day to you too.
Casper: Why the long face?
Jae Wook Ghost: You may not have noticed this, but
I. AM. DEAD.
Casper: You can be dead and happy. Look at me! Yippee!
Jae Wook Ghost: I am looking at you. Why do you think I am so depressed?
Casper: It gets better. First you lose your hair. Like me!
Jae Wook Ghost: Forgive me for not jumping for joy, but for some strange reason, I cannot seem to feel my legs.
Casper: Then you lose your voice.
Jae Wook: I would sing a song of joy but my vocal cords seem to be paralysed for some reason.
Casper: Yeah. You'll be sounding like ME soon. Isn't that cool? *breaks into high-pitched giggles* And you know what the best part is?
Jae Wook Ghost: I am dying in anticipation for you to tell me.
Casper: You wake up one morning and you find you don't have a stitch on!
Jae Wook Ghost: Wait a second...you mean I get to lose this white shirt, white pants and white shoes I am wearing?
Casper: Yup, even your white undies - poof! they vanish into thin air, just like that!
Jae Wook Ghost: That is AMAZING news! But - but - my frozen high cheekbones on my stiff cold face feel strange all of a sudden.
Casper: That's because you're SMILING, silly!

I'm ok with this so I'll give it a shot when it airs.

I'm hopeful to see how the drama turns out. I loved Daemul and although I only saw a little bit of Li Tae Ri, I thought it was cute and funny.

I love Taecyeon since I've been watching We Got Married. He is not that good of an actor though, but he's young and there's room to grow so maybe his sunbaes can help him. I think it's a very exciting role for him and I hope he does well. He doesn't look like a cop in the stills, but neither does So Yi hyun. He doesn't look like a teenager. People have forgotten what teenagers look like.

Alice Cheongdamdong was the only time I was really interested in a character So Yi hyun has played, but maybe she will do well in this since the tone seems lighter and she is the first lead. This seems like a big break for her too.

And Kim Jae Wook! Welcome back. We've missed you. I think he's gonna be a great ghost.

This drama reminds me of X-Files with one a skeptic and one a believer...also of the movie Ghost and Spellbound with Lee Min Ki...
