Kim Soo-hyun eyes alien fusion sageuk drama

This casting is nowhere near final, but it is certainly worth talking about because ALIENS! TIME TRAVELING! THROUGH JOSEON! Yes, really.
It Actor Kim Soo-hyun is reportedly looking at a new drama to continue his hot streak (he’s on fiyah these days, with his spy-action-comedy Covertly Grandly, not to mention his box-office-blockbuster The Thieves), and SBS has one they’d love to lure him in with titled Man From Another Star.
At the center of the drama is a handsome and capable alien who first landed on Earth (via UFO, naturally) 400 years ago during the Joseon era, who lives through to the current era when he falls in love with an actress. How is this NOT going to be awesome? Wait, don’t answer that. But it’s such a wacky premise that I can’t help but want it to be a smash hit. In the way that it succeeds, I mean, not in the way that I want to smash and hit things.
This could be a great role for Kim Soo-hyun, who has tried his hand (and succeeded) at a variety of genres already. We know he can do sageuk (Moon/Sun) and melodramas (Will It Snow for Christmas, Giant, Father’s House), and he’s got a lovely groundedness to his dramatic acting. On the other hand, he’s also got a mischievous streak a mile wide and is great with comedy too (Covertly Grandly, Dream High). He’s perfect for this! The only other option who might be better is Kim Woo-bin… and now I want them to play time-traveling alien brothers. Pretty please, SBS?
Granted, this drama sounds a little bit Rooftop Vampire Idol Alien In-hyun’s Man Has Faith, and we’ve seen these plot parts in many a drama already. But here’s proof that while there is nothing new under the sun, you can make something old fresh again by dressing it up with just the right tweaks. Writing is Park Ji-eun of the zippy and popular weekend series You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly, so we can expect light funnies, while PD Jang Tae-woo has more serious fare under his belt (Tree With Deep Roots, Painter of the Wind) that’ll come in handy for the sageuk bits.
Man From Another Star is being prepped as a Wednesday-Thursday drama for SBS later this year.

Sounds perfect to me, Woobie My Wuv looks like a very beautiful alien anyway and I am all up for zippy, funny sageuk-y Korean versions of Roswell. (which is what I saw Koala compare it to, and which I loved)

OMG I ADORE Roswell, I have all three seasons on DVD, and yes I petitioned for it not to cancel along with my older sister during that time. I will never forgive the WB! Thank god for Buffy, because a Dawson's Creek fan I was NOT!
I always wondered if the would make a drama of that kind of story, heaven knows it would be my type of crack.

ahaha did you send in bottles of tabasco sauce too? Season 1 was so perfect, but it went a bit downhill with all the random sci-fi stuff in Season 2, even though I loved it anyway - I was watching for the awesome chemistry of the two OTPs, not some random stories about clones and weirdly named spaceships.

Another Roswell fan here. Loved that whole royalty from another planet angle. It got ridiculous towards the end though, and Liz and her lisp, tucking hair behind her ear, annoyed me to no end. Loved Maria and Michael.

Me too!!! I LOVED Roswell. That was drama crack for me -even before I started watching K-dramas. I loved the OTP and decided to just shut my brain off during the 3rd serason. (I too own all three seasons on DVD.) Now y'all are making me want to go home and watch it!

heard of this yesterday, and it sounds GOOD. the writer has a great track record; she also wrote queen of housewives and queen of reversals. i didn't watch queen of reversals all the way through, but i absolutely loved the other two. you who rolled in unexpectedly is a stellar example of how a weekend family drama ought to be executed.
kim soo-hyun + writer park ji-eun = totally onboard.
ps. i'd love love love to be able to watch his new movie somehow!!

I'm excited for this writer too because she's known to write really zippy rom-coms with a bunch of heart.
Added on top of a director that is really good (tree w. deep roots, painter of wind) i think this will be a hit.
And that's also because ANYTHING new nowadays is something people want to tune into.
And plus, Kim soo hyun. That boy has so much star power everything he touches turns into gold even if the project itself is not critically acclaimed.

Sound fun and all. But I will only check it out after it finish airing. I seriously don't want another fantasy drama like Gu Family and Faith. Although Gu Family was A LOT better than FAITH, but that ending still getting to me. I even had a dream about it lol.

Kim So Eun is very good in sageuk. She rocked her first sageuk role as the young Hwang Bo Soo aka Empress Chun chu. Horse Healer was boring as hell but she made it worth watching even with her limited screen time.
I'd love to see her get a role that will make her "shine bright like a diamond" :).

Yes. Kim So Eun. Love her spunkiness and energy. She has lots of charisma also. Lately she hasn't been in anything that screams youth, so this would be perfect for her.
I am looking forward to Kim Soo Hyun being pair with someone I finally like, and Kim So Eun would be perfect!

How about the love interest being a dedicated teacher, someone that works for social or environmental welfare issues, like famine relief, AIDS Research, greening issues, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, you know, someone that contributes to the betterment of our world. True that!! I'm terribly cranky today. I think that came out more harsh than intended. I was thinking of if an alien guy lived on the planet for centuries...love interest...an actress? Really? Then again, Liz Taylor was instrumental in getting AIDS research off the ground and lobbying the US government and Heddy Lamar was instrumental in developing code that was a big part of the basis of wifi and bluetooth.

Question for the premise.
Will the setting be in modern times most of the time or will we have flashbacks/ jumping around in time like queen in hyuns?
The heroine is supposed to be an actress... So i'm assuming it'll be set in modern times, but of course he'll be the one out of place.
