You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin: Episodes 31-32 [Open Thread]

Most of this week’s episodes fall under lowlights, so here’s a fair warning. There are some cute bits, and Jo Jung-seok is at the center of most of them, but there is also a lot of shrillness and screaming.

On the very small upside, a lot of that screaming happens between characters I don’t like, so it’s not quite as blood-boiling as it could be. And it’s nice to see some characters show their spine (like Chan-woo)… though I tire of waiting for the day when our heroine finds hers. Could she be more of a doormat?

Highlights:

Chan-woo proposes to Yoo-shin, making a public declaration using bus adverts and flowers and awwing spectators. She’s embarrassed, but accepts.

Jun-ho gets so frustrated with his feelings for Soon-shin that he finally has an outburst to ask why she never comes by the office to visit him. Lol. He’s so not smooth with the excuses. She asks why he’s paying such attention to her, and he exclaims, “How can you be so oblivious to someone’s feelings? I… you… I… don’t know what to do about you, that’s what!” SIGH. Well, baby steps. Still, he makes her promise to consult with him before deciding, and she agrees and makes his day.

Later he’s absurdly pleased to be meeting Soon-shin for a sort of business date, and trips into the cafe counter. It’s back, ha. I think I’ve got it—he trips when he’s feeling full of himself. He tries to order her the same dish she ordered on her date with Young-hoon, then gets pissy when she wants something else.

Then he orders coffees and purposely gives her the one with the big heart in foam, and then gets pissy when Soon-shin ignores the design and stirs it all together.

To make a point, he takes her to the auditions for a tiny theater group, then shoves her onstage. She drags him up with her in nerves and practically rips off his jacket. She’s terrible at the audition, though she manages to sing a few lines decently well, and then gets recognized as Mi-ryung’s daughter.

That kills their mood, but he advises her to get her act together if she doesn’t want to be treated like Mi-ryung’s coattail-rider for the rest of her life. It’s good advice, and a little refreshing that somebody’s telling Soon-shin to suck it up and do something about her acting path, instead of just waffling around like Mi-ryung’s puppet.

Hye-shin is hurt by one of Granny’s many many many terrible comments, and asks Bread Man to play hooky on their English tutoring sessions. She wants to try her hand at boxing, and he takes her to the gym where he used to fight to teach her.

He tells her the truth of going to prison for fighting, and she’s startled but handles it gracefully, saying it’s all in the past. Then they agree to trade boxing and English lessons.

Lowlights:

Now that Soon-shin decides to go with the acting thing, Mi-ryung buys her fancy clothing and agrees to help her set the rumors straight about her adoptive family. That makes Soon-shin happy and she agrees to an interview, so she can use it to explain how great her family is.

But of course, Mi-ryung pulls strings to have the reporter delete all mention about how much Soon-shin loves her family, and is pissy about how Soon-shin doesn’t treat her with the same adoration as she does her mother. Because, in her eyes, she totally earned that love, right? She vows to make Soon-shin look at her with the same adoring eyes—no, even more adoring. Said the crazy lady.

Woo-joo, whom I usually find amusing for her childish crankiness, snaps at Bread Man to quit hanging around her mother. I get that, but she pisses me off a little by adding that he’s reaching “above your level,” which I think is terribly classist of her.

Grandma and Yoo-shin both tell Soon-shin she’s no longer part of the family for choosing to go to Mi-ryung, even though Mom says she told her to go. So when Soon-shin goes home, Grandma’s all, How dare you live here?

Chicken Ajumma reacts to the news that her son is in love by attacking Yoo-shin, literally. She tells her family huffily that she could’ve beaten her up and Yoo-shin would have deserved more abuse, which (shocker!) does not win her beloved son’s approval. Chan-woo remains firm about his intentions, while his sister opposes Yoo-shin because she’s smart and pretty and knows it. I know, such terrible crimes.

Yoo-shin even goes over to apologize to Ajumma and promise to do better, only to have Ajumma scream and rage and push her out of the house. Chan-woo jumps to Yoo-shin’s defense, and when his mother threatens to disown him if he marries her, he calls her bluff and agrees to move out.

So our two shouty mothers go at it when Ajumma accuses Mom of not raising her daughter right, and I’m pretty sure that’s a pot-kettle situation if ever there was one. Finally Mom loses her temper and screams at Chicken Ajumma that she will never send her precious daughter to be mistreated by such a mother-in-law, yelling, How dare you grab my daughter’s throat in front of me? (Ajumma has the audacity to see nothing wrong with that.)

Ajumma accuses Mom of having some kind of inferiority complex with her, to which I say HA, since to have an inferiority complex you’d have to think the other person was better than you at something. So the ajummas are no longer friends, and I’m thinking they’re better off.

Mi-ryung gets the ball rolling to cast Soon-shin in a new drama (without Jun-ho’s knowledge) and then to sign her to a different agency. Soon-shin balks, saying that she wants to work with Jun-ho; her argument is that Mi-ryung is using her starpower to push Soon-shin, but Jun-ho encourages her to do things on her own merit.

So Mi-ryung agrees, though she gets huffy when Soon-shin keeps talking about her mother, wanting to be called Mom instead of Teacher. Finally she snaps at her that Soon-shin has no blood relation to that family—she’s not Dad’s daughter—and therefore she has no reason to ever go to that house again. Because to Mi-ryung, a twenty-year-old relationship can be erased just like that.

SIGH.

it's the logic of a perfectly selfish person who cares for nobody else's feelings but her own. and who can't stand the thought of losing out to the non biological mother, whom she looks down upon. it's unimaginable to her that all her looks and money is rejected. she has never placed love or feelings over career and material wealth I suppose so it's incomprehensible to her that the warmth and love of a family is more important than what she can offer soon shin

More than selfishness, I don't think MR is mentally alright!! She gets crazy if things don't go her way, thinks of Soon Shin as her ownership, and she's so full of self pity as in "poor me I was an orphan and I managed to get to where I am today" as if being born an orphan makes her selfishness excusable!!

I just hope they don't make all good by the end of this drama and everyone forgives her.. I hope she just goes literally crazy and locked up.. yeah I hate her that much!!

I just wish SS to move out and stay away from both her "family" and MR. Always being afraid to be kicked out and hurting them will make her never think of herself and live her life. It somehow feels like they make her feel lesser, I got this feeling at the end of episode 30 when SS's mom got hurt and SS told her "you're not going to hate me, right?".

And MR is even worst, she doesn't know the first thing about caring for another, let alone being a mother, she's too controlling, uses her as her puppet.

I think the same.. She is old enough to move out and moving out will give her a peace of mind as well.

And MR... I agree she is mentally instable. No more comment.

She is old enough, but she has no income at the moment. I doubt if going back to work at the only resto in Seoul will allow her to live independently.

0

She doesn't have an income, but she can start making a plan and work towards that. And she really should.

She should be able to get a job, either at the only restaurant in Seoul or in another one, because she does have work experience now and should get good recommendations from her former boss.

Of course, it would take away hours from the time she can spend on acting, but then again, that's how many actors have to live: earn a living with another job, and squeeze in acting on the side in the hope of making it big one day...

0

yes, mentally unstable. Always in denial of her errors in like. Hope somebody will notice it.

Yes, when will LSS stop being a ball being tossed everywhere. She needs a spine! Or maybe she's also in denial just like her Mom? oh well!

I hope other episodes will be better. I can't watch it otherwise and its already on episodes 31-32.

I think I'm in denial too!! Still watching this show hoping that it'll go like I initially thought it would. The premise had sooo muuuch potential! Now watching each episode feels like a chore..

0

I'm with you.

MR is all that enz said, plus mentally delusional.

There is NOTHING that can redeem her for me.

I agree about SS too. She needs to grow a backbone and move out to be away from both her family and MR so she can actually find some self-worth. She can slowly mend her relationships with her family, but MR needs to be gone from her life. Or play a minute role (you know, like running into her once a year at a film awards event or something).

Sadly, I don't think that is the way it is going to go...

What do people think of Michael Jackson? Elisabeth Taylor? Vincent Van Gough? Great artists need to be a bit crazy. If they are not born with some lose screws, they get crazy from all that screaming.

Cut Mir Yung some slack! Sure she made a mistake by giving away Soon Shin, and she did benefit from it. But so did, hypothetically, Korean cinema.

Are you serious??

Have you NOT watched her in ep 31 when she said she is going turn SS into someone exactly LIKE HER, another MR in the making??!!

Can you imagine another MR running around screaming her head off, insisting that "I did not do anything wrong! Why are you people so MEAN to me??!!

Oh pleeease!!! I know REAL people who are exactly like MR and precisely BECAUSE people GIVE them TOO MUCH SLACK that is one of the many reasons they ARE THE WORST EXAMPLE OF HUMAN BEINGS YOU CAN EVER ENCOUNTER because they just GO BERSERK!!

Just be thankful YOU don't have to face such people in real life.

So, be VERY CAREFUL what you wish for! You really don't know how you are going to deal with people who are GIVEN TOO MUCH SLACK!!

I don't hate MR for giving SS away. She was young, and had no one to care for her, presumably not enough money & I'm guessing that she was looked down bcuz she was an orphan (from the way grandma treats her). So she did a mistake and didn't have the will and power to deal withit and turned to the one person she trusted. What I hate about her is after finding success she not only wants to erase her past, but all the ppl along with it. What i hate about her most was what she did to SS b4 she found out SS was her daughter. She didn't hesitate to destroy her confidence and her future. Even if SS was the daughter of her enemy that still wouldn't be an excuse. SS was the daughter of the man who died saving her. What i also hate about her is that she is willing to be in the way of ppl's dreams like those that were in the way of hers. And she still thinks of herself as the victim!!! She's greedy and shows no regret that is why I don't cut her some slack!! Even as a mother she's only thinking about herself and the best way to use SS to give a good impression to the public!!

What I hate most abt her was the way she treated SS after she found out whose daughter she was: the guy who helped her 'brought her daughter to an orphanage as far as she knew", and the same guy who jumped in front of a vehicle and saved her life by giving up his. This is unconscionable.

Michael Jackson, Liz Taylor might be eccentric. We don't know that they've done anything unconscionable. There is a huge difference between 'eccentric' and 'unconscionable'.

0

MR is selfish, self-centered, and a narciccist, none of which has anything to do with giving up SS as a newborn. She's more than old enough to know better. What's wrong with her isn't even remotely what was wrong with Van Gogh, and I'm not going to touch what was troubling Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor because lots of people have many different opinions about that.

I think Mir Yung is just being honest. What's the main reason for pro-creation? If one is successful in life, it is too have a mini-me. Otherwise, it is to live vicariously through one's offspring. Whether it's uttered or unuttered, this is the hope of parents.

As for Soon Shin, I don't think she can ignore her birth mother completely. She is not just protecting her adopted family by going along with Mir Yung, She is also listening to her "blood calling."

As for Jun Ho, why is he so pasty white? If I remember it right, Korean men like to have tanned skin in the summer time. It's deem manlier to have a tan. Is this not true anymore?

@superficial

This is your argument :

"What’s the main reason for pro-creation?
If one is successful in life, it is too have a mini-me. Otherwise, it is to live vicariously through one’s offspring.
Whether it’s uttered or unuttered, this is the hope of parents."

I think this line of reasoning is the MAIN reason I see so many problems created by many parents who seem to think that they OWN their children because they CHOSE to give birth to the children and they CHOSE to bring up their children in a particular way and they have the right over who and what their children turn out to be.

Which is the EXACT argument that I hear so many Korean drama writers/PDs use for the parents in their dramas to use to justify their demands that their children do as they say, even to the extent of saying things like :

"Do you know how I brought my precious son/daughter?"

"Do you know how high my expectations are of him/her?"

"My son/daughter has to do what I tell him/her because they are my son/daughter."

"I have the right to dictate to my children WHO they can or cannot marry because I gave birth to them and I brought them up like princes and princesses. They OWE me!! So now its time to pay me back!!"

Those are just SOME of the many ways Korean drama parents argue their way to justify their demands from their children.

...

If parents choose to have children because :

a. they want to make mini-mes
b. they can make demands of their children in the future
c. they want to live vicariously through their children’s lives because they feel they have lived unfulfilled lives

then, I feel sorry for such parents and their children.

To begin with, our children ARE NOT mini-us.
They are their own persons. Individuals, unique, special and deserve to be treated as such.

Just because children came out of their mothers' bodies, in actual fact, God is the Ultimate Creator of all creations. Parents ARE NOT their children's creators. Therefore, parents DO NOT OWN their children. God is the Ultimate Owner.

Secondly, if parents have children so that they can make demands of their children in the future, then the purpose of the children’s existence is simply to satisfy their parents’ unfulfilled wants and desires.

Is there any other act that is more demeaning, more detestable, more debase, than to look at, and make use of, our children simply as tools to satisfy our wants and desires?

That is the basis for the worst of humankind’s characteristics - narcissism, selfishness, self-centredness, self-absorption, lack/devoid of empathy or compassion or remorse or conscience.

Do you know who has those very characteristics?

The worst criminals that walk the face of this earth.

I know. I make a living through studying the human psyche and characteristics that such people possess in order to try to understand how they came to become the way that they are, in the hope that with such knowledge we can ultimately PREVENT the occurrence of criminal acts in the future.

...

MR’s characteristics in this drama are some of the worst characteristics NO human should possess, much less a person who calls herself a mother.

Nowhere in this drama did the writers/PDs mention that MR ever wanted the child, which was why she simply left the child with Changhun and told him to send the child to an orphanage. She definitely DID NOT want to create a mini-me at that time. She just wanted the child to disappear because the child to her is a hindrance to her wanting to become the person that she is today.

Then, lo and behold, when the child suddenly turned up 20 years later, she SUDDENLY felt this urge to create a mini-her??

A mini-her that is as devoid of basic human emotions, warmth and purpose as her?

Because NOW she wants to become a MOTHER?

COME ON!! We are not that stupid or ignorant, now are we?

The ONLY reason she wants to create a mini-her is simply to satisfy her one and only desire and goal in life – for her to be SEEN as this good/perfect person/mother in the eyes of the public – and NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with her wanting to BE a good mother to SS, in the proper and real sense of the word.

And her definition of a good mother in the eyes of the public is for SS to become EXACTLY like her, another MR, because in her warped, sociopathic mind, SHE is PERFECT, THE BEST, a person without any fault whatsoever.

How else do you explain her saying the things that she has said to her manager such as :

“What have I done to her (SS) for her to hate me so much?”
“I will show her. I will erase that shyness and dowdiness and completely get rid of that family’s influence. I will make her Song Mi Ryeong’s daughter.”

This particular scenario made my blood run cold and my skin crawl and made me feel like my whole soul and spirit shrivelled up and die. Why?

What stood out for me during the whole time she said all that is NOT just WHAT she said, but the look in her eyes and her facial expression when she said them – totally, utterly, completely, frighteningly, skin-crawlingly lacking in human warmth – so cold, lifeless, emotionless – exactly like the look I see in the eyes and face of the worst criminals that I have crossed paths with in my line of work as a Criminal Psychologist.

*shudders*

Which is why I asked if the minds of the writers of this drama are as warped as MR to come up with such characterisations for a character in a family-romantic-comedy prime-time drama?

...

Are you a parent, superficial? I sincerely hope you are not, if that is your outlook on pro-creation and parenthood.

*shudders*

@superficial

As for your opinion that SS cannot completely ignore her birth mother because according to you, there is this "blood calling" aspect, this is what I can say :

If SS does not ignore her birth mother, it has nothing whatsoever to do with "blood calling" but it is everything to do with basic human instincts and emotions such as love, compassion and conscience - from one human being to another.

We are ALL descendants from the SAME FIRST HUMANS on earth - Adam and Eve.

There is no difference in our blood whatsoever, no matter our race, creed, ancestry, etc.

So, if SS treats MR with basic human instincts and emotions, then she is the bigger person, the proper human being, the person MR should be.

The only difference that can exist is the DEGREE to the basic human instincts and emotions that SS can feel/have towards MR.

Surely the degree of her love, compassion and conscience toward MR cannot be the same as the degree of her love, compassion and conscience towards the people who have loved her all her life, who have brought her up, who have always been there for her.

Sure, she can love, care and be concerned for MR because she is only human and she has basic human instincts and emotions.

However, it is inconceivable that the degree of her love, care and concern for MR can be compared to the degree of her love, care and concern for the only family she has ever known.

Thank you Koreandramalover. I think this show is a great illustration of what a narcissist is and the damage that they can do in others lives. The actress is playing MR spot-on in that respect. One of the things I love about Korean drama is their attempts to illustrate how people should treat one another, without seeming too preachy, and how best to deal with difficult people. (Coming from a family with a narcissistic parent, I finally learned fairly late in life how to set limits in my interactions with said parent, and not get caught up in their drama.) I hope the writers develop LSS's character along those lines, and we see her set firm limits on MR's interactions with her, while keeping it classy.
And thank you KDL for your work in this field. It is important work which I'm sure can feel unrewarding at times. Keep the faith!

@newgirl ;)

Kindly accept my sincerest and deepest appreciation for your kind words and praises.

But I do not accept credit for anything good or beneficial that I do or say because I am only what God has given me. I am nothing and can be/do nothing good without God’s Power, Grace, Mercy, Love, Permission, Guidance and Help. Thus all praises are to God alone. I accept none for myself.

I am not perfect and I have many many weaknesses, faults and sins and anything bad that I do or say are my fault entirely. I hope that the little bit that I try to do in humble capacity to help my fellow humankind will grant me God’s Mercy and Forgiveness for my many faults and sins. I hope to try to leave this world a better place than when I entered it through the opportunities presented to me from God Almighty.

......

As for your experience with your parents, kindly allow me to applaud you on the actions that you have taken. You have shown the truth of God’s Words – He Tests us only with what we can bear.

The fact that you were tested and may still be tested in that way and yet you have been able to come out of the experience as the calm, sane, sensible, empathetic, compassionate, kind-hearted and humane person that you are today is proof and testament of the truth of God’s Words.

It is because you CAN bear God’s Tests that is why you were tested and may still be tested in a particular way. Because not only does God Tests us, but He also Grants us with everything we need to bear His Tests in the best possible way. We just need to place our complete faith and belief in Him. That way we will never lose our way.

I am honoured and privileged to be blessed by God with the opportunity to get to know someone as exemplary as you are, newgirl. ;)

I hope you know that not everyone can achieve what you have been able to achieve and so I hope you are comforted by the fact that you are a better person through going through life’s trials, tribulations and God’s Tests.

What does not kill us, makes us stronger. And you are the living proof of that, newgirl. ;)

Stay strong, my friend! Way to go, newgirl!

I come from the best country in the world, where the prison system is the envy of everyone. We do not imprison young mothers who decide to give their children away for a chance of a better life. We do not judge them when later they want to try their hand at parenthood. We encourage adoptive parents to be truthful to their adopted children. And, we do not judge people just by looking at their faces. Also, we do not need to agree with mass opinion. We dare to raise the other view point.

0

@superficial

I do not know how you come to assume that your country is better than other countries because of all that you have said in your latest comment and frankly, I am totally NOT interested in your comment.

You are entitled to your own opinion and so rant all you want and express your opinion as you deem necessary.

But DO NOT assume that your country and your countrymen are better than the rest of us simply for the reasons that you have given. Nobody is perfect, no country is perfect, nothing is perfect. Only God is Perfect.

The moment you think you are superior than other human beings in anyway and you think you have the right to judge others, then all I can say is - you are not God, so do not try to be one.

He's always told her he has a girlfriend, so we've had no doubts about his feelings, but I found the gazillion messages he had from her on his phone (even if not responded) off-putting.

I can't remember why she'd have his phone number in any case (probably got it off her father), but he should have blocked her number after about five messages. He's finally standing up for it now, but he was too passively-polite for a quite a while IMO.

I would have raised the issue with the boss/HR already, quit my job or taken out a restraining order, because it's been clear for too long already that this girl doesn't take no for an answer.

He already told her de would change hospital. I like how he was firm without being impolite. He never gave yi Jung hope and a reasonable human being would have understood and moved on. Unfortunately, an unreasonable k drama character MUST be unreasonably unreasonable and hence, we have yi Jung. Yes, restraining order is in order!

0

It's amazing that JH is actually normal and well-adjusted.

That family is just scary... not sure how JH bears with it, I'd be outta there in no time. I get the impression that Yi-jung and her Mom just bonded together to survive the Dad, who is just plain cruel (because, as much as I don't like the Mom, some of her questions like 'Who did you have dinner with?' are perfectly normal). Yi-jung I find just very difficult to believe... particularly since her Dad ignores her. If she had always gotten everything and been indulged always, I could see why she's ended up the way she has, but like this... it seems like she must have part of her brain missing to ASK her dad yet again for help after it's been made clear a) Chan-woo isn't interested in her b) Chan-woo has a girlfriend c) Chan-woo intends to get married to said girlfriend and d) Chan-woo has made that clear to Yi-jung, Yi-jung's Mom and his own mom. Is she going to show up in the middle of the wedding ceremony and interrupt it? Or continue to stalk them once they are married?

Ok, have watched epi 31 and still think chan woo was perfect. Neither am I a fan of public proposals but everything else and his response was perfect to the inappropriate lunch date the mom planned. :)

0

I am not a fan of public proposals either, but he does have a couple of mitigating factors.

1. He has already asked her to marry him, and she has pretty much said yes. So it wasn't like he popped the question in public; he just made it official in public.

2. He spent a month researching it. Hee. Apparently his studies showed that this was the most likely method to get her to say yes. So whatever the public gesture was, I think I can't call it thoughtless. Smirk.

The only good moments of this drama are when Chan Woo and Bread Man are on screen. There r so few moments of JJS, they r like teasers. It's torturous!
Doesn't he look tasty as candy in that light pink jacket? It just leaves me yearning for more, more, more.

But he is silly to always yell at SS and then smirk by himself when she is gone. Come on, it's Ep 32 already!

Funny, I saw the first few lines of this post before the subs came out and thought these eps were going to be terrible. But was pleasantly surprised mostly due to bread-man. Him saving Woo-Joo from the bullies and then teaching her how to give the "Mad-Dog" look was awesome. Especially when WJ practices it in the mirror. The punch from HS was totally predictable but the reaction and the bloody nose was a crack up.

I am actually still enjoying the show as long as I can skip over the older women scenes.

I really don't understand Mi Ryung, she's like the Korean version of "mommy dearest". You can't force love. She clearly is living in a world of her own creation. She sincerely believes that she can just tell Soon Shin to love her and it will happen. On the plus side the bread man knock-out was so awesome! He is the so cute and vulnerable...he's feels innocent.

I think I'm becoming really good at skipping the lowlights for this show.
I thought it was a decent week considering all I remember is: +Chan Woo's proposal
+Chan Woo standing up for Yoo Shin in front of his batshit mom (I would strangle that lady myself if I had my way-just to shut her up)
+Bread Man and Hye Shin cuteness (these two are adorable)
+The adorkable Jun-Ho who STILL hasn't confessed??

The negatives I did catch glimpses of fail to bother me because honestly I've completely shut out the plot of this show. I don't even care where it ends up. I wouldn't even know what was going on without these updates.

I just watch it for the weekly teeny-tiny cute scraps.

Also I'm already looking forward to seeing Bread Man on his next project!

@Quinze :)

Hear, hear!! I am so with you on how we can go on and on and on and on endlessly on how JJS nails the lovesick puppy look and mannerisms each and every time he is with IU as SS.

In fact, every time it happens, I cannot help but ask myself : Is he JUST acting or is he REALLY, FOR REAL, SO HAPPY just looking at IU?? Hehehehe...

In one of the Press Conferences for the drama, JJS did mention that he cannot help but smile every time he sees IU because to him IU is so cute and pretty! Hehehe!! :)

I'm in love w JJS!
Thought this drama would be heaven, u know 50 eps of JJS! But now I've to wait until he does another drama, headline, as the leading man!

0

@KDaddict ;)

"I’m in love w JJS!"

I am with you on that! ;)

How can we NOT fall in love with a guy who is so adorable, kind, caring, loving, passionate and sincere when he is in love? :)

JJS's delivery as JH is PITCH-PERFECT that I cannot separate the actor from his character; he is THAT good.

Watch JJS in "The King 2 Hearts" and you will fall in love with him all over again!! Definitely!! :)

0

Haha I love you two! I agree though! I was so excited that there'd be 50 episode of JJS cuteness! I honestly couldn't watch King2Hearts back then knowing what happens to his character but I think I'll end up watching it anyhow to cleanse my palette of this drama. It's rather sad that I have to resort to an angstier drama to satisfy my JJS fix when THIS should have been it!

0

@Quince and kay,
I fell in love w JJS in K2H. As much as I loved that show, it ended for me the min. Earnest Bot died, 10 mins. into the penultimate ep. I haven't bothered to watch the reminder. You can enjoy the show that way too. ;)

0

JJS was great in King2Hearts...cried when his character got killed... I am about to cry now that he does not have more scenes in this comedy/drama!!!

0

@Quinze

Hehehe...join the club of JJS-love...hehehe

And you are so right about THIS should be THE drama that we can get our JJS-fix instead of "the drama that killed off the only character that I really care about", otherwise known as The King2Hearts... ;(

@KDaddict: I'm totally going to watch until the episode before Earnest Bot dies and just pretend he went on a long hiatus. That should work...

0

@Quinze ;)

Yes, yes, yes!! Let's totally TAKE OVER this sinking ship and save and salvage what we can, ok? You are so right abt how after watching so many dramas, and considering the state this drama is in, I am sure we cannot do much worse, now can we? ;)

@KDaddict and @Quinze ;)

I have said this somewhere in this thread : JJS was magnificent in the "drama that killed off the ONLY character that I care about" otherwise known as The King2Hearts.

I only watched JJS in it and stopped watching it after Earnest Bot was undeservedly killed off and have never recovered from the withdrawal pains.

IMHO, that is a drama that has writers and PDs who lost their heads and killed off a character FOR NOT LOGICAL REASON WHATSOEVER...

I think they did it simply to shift the viewers' full focus back on the OTP because JJS as Earnest Bot has captured viewers' full focus every time he comes on screen. And that is entirely because JJS, the gifted actor, played the role.

JJS was totally mesmerising as Earnest Bot that I was so enraptured and made his portrayal so unforgettable for me ;)

Just like @KDaddict, I fell in love (virtually) with him in that drama. Hope you will enjoy watching JJS there too! ;)

Chicken ajumma will be the classic scary Korean Mother-in-Law from Hell. Her screaming is grating on my nerves. Poor Yoo Shin can be a pain, but she has to deal with that crazed person.

I drop YtBLSS since 2 weeks ago, even don't want to watch while browsing/playing games in internet.

That's why I don't really fall for long Kdramas. I take this lessons from Okjagyo Brothers and If Tomorrow Comes. I only watch 2 - 4 first episodes + 4 last episodes. Hehehe....

I thought YtBLSS is going to be better than others, and I do really like the side stories of the sisters (the 'don't want to marry cause it only leads to heart broken or divorce'/'I can stand/happy/content by myself' to 'I married because of that what people expect me to do so/I give up everything for it and end up divorce' - stories that happen all over the world, I can connect to them).

But.... it turns out to be the same, prolong on the birth-not-so-secret, low self esteem or too high self esteem/egocentric. I have enough.

So, thank you Javabeans, to update us on this drama. See you when this drama back to it good self.

Frankly, I'm starting to lose patience with this how too, as much as I like it. Most of the time seems to be spent on characters that I either don't like, have stopped liking, or have grown tired of. All the couples are cute when together, but Yoo-shin, for example, is just annoying by herself, Soon-shin has no backbone and can't stick up for herself, especially to her family (and I mean her real family, not Mi-ryung), and Chan-woo, who's finally standing up to his mother, is rather dull. The high points continue to be Jun-ho and Bread Man's scenes. Especially Jun-ho. Jo Jung-seok is superb. He really hits the comedy beats right on the nail.

I really want to continue with this, but if, say, in the next few weeks, Soon-shin doesn't realize Jun-ho likes her, and starts liking him back, I may give up on this show too. I hate to even think it, but I may do it.

Thanks for the weecap, JB!

Yeah, you may be right, but this show moves so slowly, I want something to happen. At least with the knowledge that Chang-hoon isn't Soon-shin's bio father, people may take a step back and try to work things out instead of jumping to ridiculous conclusions every five minutes.

And I would like to see some movement on the romance front between Soon-shin and Jun-ho. Before the sh*t hit the fan, they were doing just fine. But now, I'm not so sure. It's really aggravating, since I thought this show was going to be more of a rom-com, instead of a melodrama. I just hope things improve, with more Soon-shin/Jun-ho scenes in future episodes. All the family drama is getting worn out, and I'm just tired of the same problems and discussions week after week.

I agree with the commentors' comments on Ojakkgyo Brothers.

Even though it was not perfect but it was close enough to me because as mentioned by the commentors, there is focus and balance in the delivery of the drama's plot and characterisations throughout. It moved me in many different ways and there were so many memorable moments that I cannot forget such that I cannot remember any of the lowlights.

It is one of the better family romantic comedy drama produced by Korean writers/dramas and you should really give it a try.

But then again, if adults behave in that crazy way in her family, what chance has she got?

But would you really want her to be nice? She's very tsundere like her first aunt, and that's what makes her character a good foil for Bread Man, in contrast to her mother, who's *too* nice.

As for this particular instance, she again was rude to Bread Man before Hye Shin arrived to pick her up from school, so Mom didn't see any of it. Woo Joo and Hye Shin essentially had two separate solo scenes with Bread Man this time around.

Do I want her to be nice? Well, yeah, at this point I actually do. Her little hissy fits were funny in the beginning, but 30+ episodes in they are just a sign of a) bad parenting and unresolved emotional issues b) behaviour that has crossed the line and isn't acceptable any more.

I would be more interested in seeing how her Mom helps her deal with the daddy-issues she has and her warming up to Bread Man.

Plus, Bread Man has been incredibly patient – I would have long stopped interacting with such a bratty little girl!

I really do wish they'd start advancing Bread Man's romance along with the main couple, though. It's far past time for Soon Shin to put her foot down and do something for herself, and I'm starting to fear that there's not enough time to get Woo Joo to like Bread Man *and* have Hye Shin fall in live *and* have the deadbeat dad show up. Chan Woo and Yoo Shin are cute together, but now that they're in marriage mode it's just a way to add even more ajumma drama to the show that so doesn't need any more.

"...Could she be more of a doormat?..."

I think this is one of my main complaints about this series (and a few other similar k-dramas, such as "I Summon you Gold").

For some reason it seems like the writers think that the heroine always has to be a doormat to be "nice". And it is getting a bit old as a plot device. On the other hand, since they keep repeating it, I wonder if Korean audiences have a different take on it.

At this point I no longer have any sympathy for most of the chars in this series - would not bother me a bit if all the screaming moms and the like got hit by a runaway train and smooshed into oblivion. I am pretty much fed up with Soon Shin being a walking example of total wussiness - most of her problems are not because of others, but because she is so stubbornly passive and too freeking dumb to see who is on her side.

I managed to watch both episodes in 17 minutes, so I may have skipped something interesting but from the synopsis I doubt it.

I think you hit upon a significant point:
The heroine of so many KDs r what we international fans would deem as doormats. So Korean ajummas must like them. By contrast, we'd regard Yoo Shin to be a perfectly fine specimen of the female of the species. As CW and his sis say, She is pretty, she is capable. So what is the problem? She is NOT a doormat. So she is poor DIL material in and of herself. Chicken ajumma has never liked her even as her best friend's daughter. On top of that, she doesn't come w a derma clinic attached.

Hear, hear, KDaddict!! The vastly-different definitions and perceptions of the 'good' specimen of the female species by people of different race, culture, beliefs, background, etc., makes for an interesting debate.

I am Asian and yet I am far from being categorised as the 'good' female by a vast majority of Asian people because I have been labelled opinionated, headstrong, fiercely-independent (aka NOT submissive), uncompromising, etc., etc...

And so watching SS's characterisations so far have driven me up the wall over and over again it is a miracle I am not permanently walking upside down after watching how the writers/PDs have chosen to portray SS as such a wallflower/doormat or lacking in any backbone...

I can only see glimpses of her speaking up for herself and the rest of the time, she just seems to be robbed of any ability to SAY OR DO anything DEFINITE and SURE to discourage others from stepping ALL OVER HER the way that MR has been doing to her!! Arrggghhh...

So many of the characterisations favoured by Korean drama writers and PDs are so out of this world that I wonder if they are based on reality or just from the warped imagination of the writers and PDs?

You said it, KDaddict! As an international fan of K-dramas, I find it really irritating when the heroine of a show is weak, un-combative, and more or less lets people walk all over them. In this sense, I dislike Soon-shin. The idea that many Koreans seem to possess (and this is strictly coming from an observer stand point by someone who watches K-dramas and variety shows) the idea that all young women must have a "pure and innocent" image is just ridiculous. There are some women who are portrayed with a strong image in dramas, but usually these badass, no-nonsense women have terrible personalities. It's just stupid. And even some of these women who can kick ass like a man, have weak personalities. It seems to me that a woman can only argue back in public when she has reached a certain age and has entered ahjumma territory.

As an American, I see women who are badass and no-nonsense women, who aren't afraid to stand up for themselves in front of others. Maybe this is just a cultural thing, but it does bug me to no end to see women of other cultures treated differently just because they are women. Also the idea in Korea that all women must be good cooks and take care of their homes before anything else is just sad. Again, it must be a cultural thing, and I do understand it, but I don't like it. Which, despite how aggravating she is in regards to Soon-shin, is why I do like Yoo-shin and her rather feminist approach to her life, her love and just about everything else. The only thing that really bothers me, is the way she treats Soon-shin and her family. Everything else, I applaud her on.

"... And even some of these women who can kick ass like a man, have weak personalities..."

And I have seen that in more than one series/movie. In one extreme example the heroine was some kind of 9th degree black belt, yet she kept tripping and breaking her high heels (and of course getting a minor scrape on her pinky, which required the hero to immediately rush to buy a $400 first aid kit to fix).

You would think that a girl with a black belt and being a movie stunt girl would know how to not fall, and if she did, how to land without injury.. but I guess K-girls get amnesia when around a guy....

Required fields are marked *

@Abbie and Windsun,
I think the "ideal types" of different cultures r diff. I'm guessing, and may be totally off, that the quintessential submissive woman may be a dying or extinct breed even in Korea or Japan, but it doesn't prevent older ladies (who watch the bulk of makjang tv shows) to yearn for them esp. in the form of a DIL. So we see them reproduced in show after show. I think what is considered to be entertaining must also differ by cultures.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think the culture difference is why you see so much of the "good daughter/daughter in law" lines in k-dramas. Supposedly this show was aimed at 35+, so that could explain some of it, but even then... Apparently the definition of a "good" one is do whatever the MIL says.

I have seen the line "I will be a good daughter" used in several k-dramas, so it is not just this train wreck.

0

I know too many people who are JUST LIKE Miryung. They're complete sociopaths.

It was incredibly gratifying to have Ahjumma and mom finally go at it.

And lastly, I usually watch K-drama because the characters shed new light on the human condition and indirectly help teach in positive ways how to be a better human being. There is no such person in this drama. Every single character is stunted in some way, even Jun-ho. And there are so many despicable people in this show, the grandma especially. She is a terrible, terrible human being. So are Jun-ho's sister and mother as well as Chanho's sister and mother. In fact, at least Miryung's psychosis at least fascinating. The others are just contemptible with nothing redeeming about them.

I think he could be a very powerful, scary guy. I'm really hoping we find out soon, though. For some reason, I'm picturing the dad from City Hunter. He is scary.

let's look on the bright side. no matter how bad/boring ytblss can get with the histronics and the family drama, it can't hold a candle to just how terribly and unabashedly makjang hundred years' inheritance has become lol. i think the latter has pulled out every single k-drama trope that has ever been thought up (amnesia, lies, birth secrets, corruption, traffic accidents, blackmail, fatal illness, birth switchups, car chases, suicide attempts, etc, to name a few) and then some. at the very least we can depend on this drama to remain somewhat realistic. lol

also, soon shin isn't that much of a doormat, imo, esp. compared to some other leads. she argues for what she wants, she acts a certain way only if she can get something in return. when other girls like yijung or yeonah try to sass her she sees through it and doesn't take it, which is a breath of fresh air, imo. she also refuses to take the roles miryung gives her and insists on signing/working ONLY with shin daep, too. i'll admit she's taking her sweet time getting started on the whole acting thing, but that's mostly because she herself feels guilty/conflicted, not because other characters are telling her not to.

and her and junho are soooo cuuuuteeeeeee. like he doesn't know how to act around her AT ALL and it is completely endearing. i hope iu x jjseok are paired up in another drama bc w/ this writer their chemistry is going to waste.

OMG hundred years’ inheritance, it managed to get all, ALL, k-drama CLICHEs in one drama. bravo, bravo.

in the last 4 episodes we got runaway bride, car crash, birth secrets revealed, mom overdosed, nice grandpa died, evil evil MIL bankrupted... and the heroine is a bigger doormat.

Yeah, I absolutely agree with you. What we have been exposed to all along DOES determine how we react to the new and different stuff available out there in the wide wide world.

I am definitely not someone who has the talent to put up with so much crazy makjang in dramas since I witness it first-hand almost regularly whenever I have to face the family members of the criminals who come into my office on a daily basis.

I can tell you this much. Not many Korean dramas I have watched so far has as much DRAMA as what I have witnessed IN REAL LIFE so far, but THIS drama comes really close! Arrgghhh...

0

@kay,
In Long dramas, they usually throw in every makjang device to fill the time. The exception is Childless Comfort. It is a warm and funny family drama that has no villains. It builds up slowly to let u get to know, and care abt the family. Lovely viewing experience.

0

@KDaddict

Thanks for the sharing about the drama "Childless Comfort". I was thinking of watching it but time not permitting, I did not get to do it.

Now that you have shared about it, I am definitely going to find time to watch it.

Thanks again, KDaddict dear! ;)

I am honoured and privileged to be given the opportunity to be blessed to get to know you because YOU are MY friend too. ;)

You are one example why I still have faith and hope in humanity despite the horrendous stuff I have faced and am still facing on a daily basis in my line of work.

Which is also why I am STILL not giving up on this drama because it will take a great deal more bad stuff for me to give up on anyone or anything no matter how bad things already are now.

I am still holding out hope things WILL and CAN be better, if only people would LISTEN to reason and CHANGE for the better.

And even if things are not MUCH better, even the tiniest spark/glimpse of improvement is reason enough for me to stay hopeful and loyal. Or maybe I am just idiotically loyal? Hehe ;)

Typo: I mean Rosie O'Donnell.

Basically this episode was me rewinding Junho, tripping over nothing, Junho smacking his hand against the counter, Junho unable to speak in full sentences around Soon Shin...

I was genuinely shocked when the old chicken just tackled YooShin right in front of her mother. I was like 'what the hell, woman?!' Even if she doesn't like YooShin and even if YooShin can be stubbornly difficult at times, that is no basis to attack someone. It's not as if YooShin killed her son or dismembered him. Neither is YooShin a creepy murderer on the loose a la 'I hear your voice'. If someone did that to my daughter, I would call the police and sue him/her for assault, friend or no friend.

And, if none of you have noticed, I have never really commented on SoonShin all these times simply for the reason that jb just pointed out. She is such a doormat that I get FRUSTRATED just looking at her. What does she WANT?! I cannot root for a person who just coasts along and does whatever other people ask of her and then get pissy or sad when she does what she doesn't want to do. If she doesn't want to leave the house, then don't leave! If YooShin or Grandma screams at her then scream back that she is at her rightful place and how dare they lie to her about her adoption if she isn't? If Miryung cuts off all those parts about her gushing about her family, then find another reporter to whom she can spill the beans to! I mean, this scandal has two main characters, specifically SoonShin herself and MiRyung. So SoonShin can speak up herself and people would be willing to listen! But no! She just takes everything in and cry later! Her passiveness is similar to that of a single cell organism and for the life of me, I cannot feel anything for a bunch of fluids encased in a membrane.

I have never ever in my life felt MY SKIN CRAWL each and every time MR smiles to herself, when there is no one around...urrgggghhh...

It is so obvious the ONLY reason she smiles to herself with no one around to smile along with her is her way of patting herself on her back for doing something worthy of a smile in her mind and in her mind alone...when there is NO ONE AROUND to pat her on her back...

She is clinically-criminally-insane, a psychopath/sociopath totally devoid of basic, essential human emotions such as compassion, empathy, selflessness, guilt, remorse, kindness...

Which makes me wonder WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE THE WRITERS/PDS THINKING AND DOING TO THIS DRAMA??!!

Are the writers'/PDs' minds as warped and clinically-insane as MR's such that they could come up with such stuff?

Someone above commented this world is full of people like MR, which I agree, but what I want to know is why do the writers/PDs choose to put such characters into the drama?

Do we, the viewers, WANT to watch such characters play out their clinically-and-criminally-insane antics and waste viewers' time, money and effort in watching them?

If we DO want to watch the WORLDS' WORST PEOPLE'S DOING THE WORST POSSIBLE ACTIONS, we just need to go watch any of the crime documentaries such as Foxcrime, National Geographic Channel, History Channel, BBC Knowledge, etc..., or just pick up any newspaper or turn to any news channel to read up on or learn about the most inhumane things humans can do to one another!!!

Why waste so much time, effort and money on highlighting such unwelcome, undesirable and detestable characters on prime-time dramas??!!

Are we NOT supposed to ENJOY watching dramas nowadays anymore??!!

Are we supposed to be tortured emotionally, psychologically, mentally, spiritually by all the horrendous characters that this world can produce play out all their despicable actions in all their glory in every single drama or film??!!

Why?? Tell me WHY??

In my line of work as a Criminal/Clinical Psychologist, I come face-to-face with the worlds' possible human beings on earth after they have done the worst possible actions on other human beings in many different countries, so I know what I am talking when I say MR is clinically-criminally-insane and a psychopath/sociopath hybrid.

And so I am really bothered to see such a character being played out so blatantly in a FAMILY ROMANTIC COMEDY DRAMA over prime-time television with audiences of all ages.

I certainly hope we are not nurturing more MRs in the future through such characterisations in dramas watched by countless impressionable young minds especially.

Arrrggghhh!!!!!!

I've been creeped out by that wall-sized projector image of MR, AND all the life-sized photos of herself just in her living room. What kind of a psych would want to live in such in spartan space with nothing for decoration but her own images?

Is it a replacement for photos of her in nomal photo frames that most of us have in our homes?

Perhaps normal-sized photos in normal-sized frames are not LARGE, INTERESTING OR LOUD enough to satisfy someone with an ego as large as MR or a mind of a megalomaniac like her such that she needs A WHOLE WALL OF MOVING PICTURES OF HER AND HER ALONE STARING BACK AT HER in that utterly COLD, EMOTIONLESS house that I would NOT call a home because a home is where NORMAL people live in while doing NORMAL things.

Who HAS such a wall??!!

And I echo your thoughts - THANK YOU, Javabeans, for allowing us this avenue to air our rants or else, like you said, KDaddict, we will just be tearing out our hair while driving our loved ones insane because this drama is driving us insane... ;)

And I totally agree with every word you said about MR's house not being a home.

Home IS where the HEART is, but MR obviously has a cold, hard rock where the heart should be.

And a home is where LOVE is because only people with hearts WHO FEEL AND HAVE LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER live in it, but its obvious MR has TOTAL ABSOLUTE OBSESSION OF HERSELF ONLY because I would not degrade the meaning of LOVE to be used for what MR feels for herself and herself alone.

0

That wall creeps me out... and obviously says everything about MR (i.e. in terms of the only thing that is important to her: herself).

Walls or life-sized photographs of a character in their own home do pop up in K-dramas quite regularly though, as if that were normal. The one I can think of on top of my head is Choi Si-won's image in Oh My Lady. (He plays a self-absored actor in that drama too – though nothing near as delusional as MR!)

Anyhoo, it creeps me out every time, in any drama.

I am with you on being creeped out over that INSANE wall-of-MR.

Which makes me wonder - WHO CAME UP WITH THE IDEA among the writers/PDs? It is such a crazy idea that when it first came on screen in the drama, I was literally shocked speechless looking at it!!

0

I wonder who first came up with that idea...

I think Seol-chan in Monstar has huge pictures of himself on the walls too? I think in the apartment he was first living in, not sure if in his own room at his parents' as well?

Maybe actors/performers really do that in real life? It's so so weird though and in MR's case creepy like hell. At least in Oh My Lady the kid ruins the picture by using it as a drawing canvas (I think they leave it up, which is actually hilarious).

0

Uee has a large pic of herself in her house too! Yet she seems perfectly sweet and sane.

0

@alua

You mean, ANOTHER character in another drama, Monstar, has something similar?! Oh noooo!!! I don't watch that drama so I don't know but if its true, then NOOOOOO!!! Madness galore!! Urrgghh...

Creepy as hell indeed!!

0

I think there is a difference between Siwon's large picture of himself in Oh my Lady (and the one in Monstar, which I'm not watching), or Eric's in Myung Wu the Spy vs MR's. The guys were playing Silly primo uomo's, not psychopaths. Very different vibes.

0

I agree, there is a different vibe with MR's picture and those in other dramas, but I still find it very, very weird to a have huge picture of yourself on your wall.

In Oh My Lady and Monstar (haven't watched the other one you mention) they do make a point about some individuals being just a little too full about themselves, but neither character is delusional like MR is.

Plus, in Oh My Lady, the kid drawing on the photograph sends a pretty clear message.

0

Does anyone remember if Dokko Jin has a large picture of himself in his house? His was a pretty big ego too.

0

@KDaddict

I didn't watch the drama with Dokko Jin, so can't help you to answer your question but it would be interesting to know if someone can answer your question. ;)

Required fields are marked *

Yes, you are so right about how people like MR DO NOT change because they are simply incapable of changing themselves because in their warped minds, they have NOT done anything wrong so why do they need to change?

Which is why MR is so blind to her own faults and have never stopped and asked herself why SS hates her and why she has ALWAYS said that she has not done anything wrong to SS, when any SANE human being KNOWS what wrong she has done and should be remorseful about, and yet she is devoid of any remorse whatsoever.

She's not only delusional (which means she isn't able to change), but she's much too old to change and if there were any change, it would take years and years and would be very small. She's beed deluded and a narcissist for too long, but knowing the track record of K-dramas all that is going to be shoved under the carpet and they'll redeem her in a nano-second.

I really want Junho to stop interacting with her too. If need be, by him quitting as she destroys his company. Then he and SS can start from nothing with their careers in entertainment – SS as an actress and Junho as a singer. They'd be so much happier for sure.

Yes, yes, a million times YES!! You are so right!! JH needs to cut off all ties with MR totally and do exactly as you have said, and I will be a giddily-happy viewer!! Hahaha!! :)

As for what you said MR, you are so spot-on! MR's level of narcissism, delusion and sociopathic tendencies are too deep and ingrained in her psyche that any effort to try to redeem her will only cause us, the viewers, to feel cheated because there is no way we can accept that such a person CAN be redeemed within a few years that span most Kdramas. How CAN a person who is so warped mentally be so easily redeemed? IMHO, nothing short of death is good enough to eradicate such a character in a drama. We simply cannot erase such mental-incapacitation by anything that the writers/PDs can come up with because from what the writers/PDs have done so far do not come close to being good ideas in my book.

0

Well, I wouldn't wish death on anyone, not even hateful drama characters... but if they did lead MR down that path, it would be bound to come with a scene of Soon Shin forgiving MR for everything since Soon Shin is so nice (or rather: a doormat).

0

Wow...... I really pity the actress playing MR..... A bad career choice....

@KDaddict ;)

Tough IS the word. I cannot tell you how many times I have felt that, being at the frontline of seeing and knowing how inhumane human beings can be, is SO TOUGH that I have questioned WHY people can be like that, WHY such unbelievably-horrendous things happen, WHY, WHY WHY, such that my faith in the goodness of human beings have been shaken so many times.

I cannot remember how many times I have cried till I cannot cry anymore thinking of the lost souls at the cruel and evil hands of the criminals that I come face-to-face with at such close quarters.

What I have to fall back on as coping mechanisms in 15 years of being in this line of work are my religious belief (my belief in God), the love of family and friends and each and every time good people do good things around me that can shift my focus from the horrible, horrible stuff I have to encounter on a day-to-day basis, and finally the reason I chose this line of work - I chose it because I HAVE faith in God and in human beings and I want to do what I can in my humble capacity as a psychologist to spread that faith.

Which is why I also watch dramas because I need the dose of cute and happy to counter the heartbreak that I experience every time I learnt of how another innocent soul is lost at the inhuman hands of human beings.

Which is why I REALLY CANNOT stand watching all the insaneness displayed in this drama. There is more than enough insanity to torture us in the real world. I can do without them in dramas, please.

0

Oh, @kay, you poor darling,
Yourst is really tough work that needs to be done. I'm glad your faith in God stands you in good stead.

I'm with @kay on the Qn:
"Are we NOT supposed to ENJOY watching dramas nowadays anymore??!!"

I know every KD has to have its resident villain. Perhaps I've seen too many of them in too many KDs, I'm getting sicker of them by the drama. I know they exist in real life. In life, I'd drop them in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, in KDs, I hang around for my JJS fix n get too big a dose of MR to piss me off!

This show has a lot of faults. A lot. But I persist because I love our main hero. He is just the best fun when he's jealous, and his developing maturity just makes me swoon. He now behaves so grown-up with all the crazy women around him (His mother, sister, ex and SMR). I'm so proud of him.
Now if only Soon Shin's character would grow up a little too. Why on earth did the author call her Soon Shin if she wasn't going to become a force to reckon with? I wanted to see the budding of some wisdom, power and persuasive skills. Instead I get pouts, 'eonnies', submission, and internalization of all her feelings and values. Why can't this character stand up to anyone? Why hasn't she at least learned how to reign in that evil evil birth mother? Soon Shin! For the sake of your nation, at least do something about SMR!

Required fields are marked *

I have such a love/hate relationship with this show now.

1) I think someone needs to re-title it 'Terrible Moms' because that's pretty much what it's been about lately.

2) Usually in kdrama there's at least one female character that's all evilly manipulative and or just plain mean that makes you cringe for the portrayal of women and yet slap her at the same time. This show....that to the nth degree. 85% of the women on this show I just want to take out back and slowly strangle to death. Why? Why are you all so horrible and self-centered? Gah. (And it's kinda sad that I'm not including Yeon Ah in that bunch, she's not even that bad compared to Soon Shin's 'moms' or grandmom, tbh.)

3) One of the few bright spots is watching JJS act. He's brilliant. I was laughing so hard when he tripped. And the little smiles that happen when Jun Ho is thinking of Soon Shin just kill me. Still, every episode I'm yelling at the screen 'JUST ADMIT YOU LIKE HER ALREADY!!!' because, seriously, come on! *sigh*

4) Bread man storyline continues to be a bright spot as well. More of that please, show.

5) I really, really, really don't understand why chicken lady has such a thing against Yoo Shin. Why does she think her family is so much better than Yoo Shin's? All she does is sell chicken for crying out loud. At least Yoo Shin is smart and successful (probably more so than chicken lady herself) and, imo, quite a catch. Yeah, Yi Jung comes from more money, but the girl is dumb as a brick (ugh, show, ugh!) and has absolutely nothing of her own to recommend her. And, btw, she might want to take her son's feelings into account at least a tiny bit. I mean, come on!

6) Is it really bad of me that I wish Grandma would just drop dead? Err....

Anyway. There's not much forward momentum. I was hoping with last week's cuteness that we'd finally pushed past most of the screaming and scheming, but alas, no. I hope that it gets better soon.

lol if halmoni dropped dead this writer would find her angst fix for the next 20 episodes.
I like that you mentioned Yeon Ah in the not-even-that-bad category because damn is it true. Like she's an amateur compared to these "moms"! I mostly just feel sorry that she's still looking for her mommy figure. Like go hire a sane woman to play your mom-you're better off...

Give Yeon Ah a couple decades. With time she'll graduate to the Mom's level. Just kidding.

Seriously, you guys. I thought Yeon Ah was set up to be the bad guy at the beginning but everyone else has been so terrible that her deeds seem to pale in comparison. In the end she's just someone that kind of got lost in the mix. lol

Just reposting this here for those who haven't seen this yet:

Episode 33 Written Preview:
Junho consoles Soonshin and spends some time with her. When Yooshin notices that Soonshin is not home and calls Miryung, Miryung lies that she's planning to sleep over at her house. Giljae and Jungae fight once again, and Yooshin goes to get Chanwoo who has left the house. She brings Chanwoo back and goes to Giljae's house, but she gets harshly rejected at the doorsteps. Soonshin, who has packed her belonging and left the house, goes to Junho and tells him that she will work hard; he happily arranges auditions...

Well, thanks for the highlights and lowlights DB.
Firstly, I just want to put out that this drama would shine as compared to the hundred year inheritance(HYI for short)
HYI WAS ABSOLUTE PAINFUL TO WATCH AND I JUST GAVE UP WATCHING AFTER 20 Episodes in.
LSSITB is actually something watchable albeit the the amount of terrible mothers. I swear the writer was going for LSS mother> Mi Ryung> Gil Jae Ajumma and lastly I think Jun ho's mother would find her husband cheating on her with MR and all the mother batshit over again. It was logical and realistic at the start but now it has just gone to ratshit and should be thrown away.

Secondly,I think breadman+Hye shin was nice but U joo really has to let go of her divorced father, its stupid and has gone on way too long 30 episodes in.

Thirdly,Chan Woo finally facepalm I jeong in the 31st episode which is great. She deserved it as the character in the drama.

Fourthly, I want more JH and LSS cuteness, the way he gets so jealous over YH (the restaurant owner) is actually pretty nice to watch and how he indirectly confesses to LSS at episode 31 is actually nice.

Fifthly, I want more JH>LSS>YH goodness. Kill mi ryung, her character is absurd in many ways.

Bread Guy FTW! I love that it's Hye-shin's turn to ask that they play hooky, and that she accepted his checkered past.

Now if only Woo-joo (AKA "Bratinella," according to my mom :p) will get with the program.

I swear - most of the characters above 40 years of age are absolutely BARMY. Really, all of them.

CrazyBiological!Mom - nothing more need to be said. Period.
NobleIdiot!Mom - what were you thinking sending her to that crazy woman's house?
CrazyChickenLady - REALLY. Are you sure you're not related to Song Mi Ryung. Because both of you share the same tendency of NOT LISTENING TO YOUR KID.
Chicken Uncle - REIN IN YOUR WOMAN, YO.
Doting Mama Shin - Please stop being delusional along with your daughter. Your husband has it right - she doesn't deserve a nice guy like Chan Woo.
PapaShin - I have nothing against you, really. You're probably the sanest character above 40 now.

Papa Shin is pretty cruel though – I'd run a mile from him. And his "Let's invite Chan-woo for Yi-jung's birthday" wasn't innocent either.

Agreed. kdramas have a way of painting the rich dads in dramas where there's a shrill daughter/son as the "sane" parent but really they're as much part of the problem as everyone else.
First of all, you let your wife coddle this child into infancy so she has absolutely no way of understanding that NO means NO.
Then you "give in" which further blurs that point in the girl's mind.
He has no relationship to speak of with his daughter. A big part of the problem since if one parent is going to coddle her to death she needs to have another balancing parent in her life that does more than just say yes or no to her. Why the hell do you not have an interest in your kids??

@Quinze

You are so spot-on with your comment! Everything you said is so true!

Sadly, most Kdramas writers and PDs are either clueless, ignorant, oblivious, or deaf/blind/dumb or all of that considering how so many Kdramas are chockful of characters that are absolutely illogical and crazy.

I agree. But at least it's a form of sane cruelty. I can actually UNDERSTAND his motivations.

"...it's a form of SANE CRUELTY."

This is the first time in my 43 years of life on this earth and after almost 16 years of working as a Criminal Psychologist I heard such words being used in such a way.

Do you KNOW how illogical you sound?

Care to explain yourself?

Kindly read my response to your comment below.

I agree with @alua about PapaShin.

IMHO he does not come across as being a good example of a father because of his invite to Chan-woo with the pretense of "just come for dinner".

Come on! We are not blind or deaf, are we?
We can see what exactly was on his mind when he did that a mile away!!

Yeah - but i find that its really one of the few times that he relents to do something nice for his daughter. He just wants her to be happy for that day. He's not like blackmailing Chanwoo to date his daughter at the expense of his career at the clinic.

To be fair, I do think that he's so busy playing bad cop to DotingMamaShin that he has lost all ability to communicate with his kids. Junho reminds me a bit of him - all gruff and unable to communicate.

Is he cruel - yes, probably in a to the point, Machiavellian. my way or the highway manner. he is manipulative. But I don't think his motivations vis a vis his family are malicious.

When PapaShin and Chanwoo were in his office, PapaShin asked Chanwoo if he has a girlfriend and even AFTER Chanwoo said YES, in the NEXT second, PapaShin invited Chanwoo to his home "for dinner".

What do you call that?

Do normal people/fathers do that on the pretext of "wanting their children to be happy"?

Does that even make sense to you, or to anyone?

Even after knowing that the man your daughter likes has said to you he has a girlfriend, you STILL weasel your way through anyway?

Knowing the kind of daughter he has - delusional with psychotic tendencies, does not know the meaning of "I have a girlfriend, so leave me alone" said to her by the man she has expressed interest in, totally self-absorbed, self-centred and utterly without conscience or shame - what did he do or say to help her with her problems?

Invite the said man over to their home for dinner??!!

Wonderful! He is FATHER OF THE YEAR!

What he SHOULD have said to Yi Jung was what he said to her in ep 32 after his delusional daughter with his equally-delusional-and-clueless wife went to see Chanwoo's mother and was told by Chanwoo that he is getting married to his girlfriend.

He said to Yi Jung, if she bothers Chanwoo again, he would book a flight ticket and send her off to Timbuktu.

Which is what he SHOULD have said WAY BEFORE ALL THE MADNESS that Yi Jung and her mother have done.

WHO in this good earth does what Yi Jung and her mother did anyway?

Yi Jung's mother :

You KNOW the man your daughter likes has a girl.
You KNOW the man has TOLD your daughter that he has a girl.
And YET - you STILL bulldozed your way into the man's life by meeting with his mother to try to influence the mother to influence the man to accept your daughter?

Yi Jung :

You have been told TO YOUR FACE by the man you like on, oh I don't know, more than 10 occasions, that
HE HAS A GIRLFRIEND,
HE DOES NOT LIKE YOU,
HE IS NOT INTERESTED IN YOU AT ALL,
HE WANTS YOU TO LEAVE HIM ALONE OR HE WILL CHANGE JOBS,

and YET, you still did what you did anyway??

You pleaded with your father to help you to force Chanwoo to leave his girlfriend so that they won't get married, so that he can ACCEPT you??!!

Even AFTER ALL THAT, you STILL DO NOT SEE the error of your ways?

HOW Yi Jung became to be the way she is only God knows. But she has both parents to be responsible in her upbringing.

And from what we have been shown by the writers and PDs of this drama so far, PapaShin is as warm and nurturing as a block of ice, while MamaShin is as clueless and dumb as a rock.

No wonder Yi Jung is the way she is, while Joon-ho is so bumblingly-clueless at best, outright cold and harsh at worst, but after getting to know SS, he is, thankfully, beginning to change for the better.

This family is the very definition of dysfunctional.

While MR is the very definition of a psychotic, psychopathic/sociopathic, apathetic, non-empathetic human being.

No wonder PapaShin and MR get along so well.

REALLY! The writers and PDs of this drama should win the award for "The best clinically-insane writing for a drama".

MR dropping the "your father is NOT your father" bomb on SS at the end of ep 32 because she is pissed SS does not want to call her "Mom"??!!

That is what a REAL mother does, is it??!!

Emotional blackmail is the way to go to get your way??!!

Arrrggghhh!!!!!

IT IS OFFICIAL - the drama writers and PDs are certifiably CLINICALLY-INSANE!!

They really need to come into my office so that they can be professionally-assessed and go through IMMEDIATE medical and psychological intervention and treatment.

I am bracing myself for what MORE CRAZY STUFF they are going to throw our way in upcoming episodes.

This is how the writers and PDs reward us, the viewers, who have NOT given up watching the drama??

I mean, without us, the viewers, where will the writers and PDs be? Would they still even have their jobs??

MR - YS - Granny, I hate to break it to you, but, as mentioned in an earlier thread, BLOOD - DOES - NOT - MAKE - A - FAMILY!!

Writer, we’re really ready for you to use all the angsty circumstances and let SS grow a SPINE! No more wooden, submissive doormat. Please, let her become more lively and animated. Give her strength to stand up to and speak up against all these crappy people in her life.

More cute, less UGH, please!!

They are the stupid and crazy ones!!

Stupid, crazy, deaf, blind and dumb ones for NOT listening to the gazillion opinions on what they should have done to make this drama better.
