I Hear Your Voice in talks for extension

Gah, you know when you SAY that you love something so much that you could watch it for a thousand episodes? I don’t really MEAN it, Show! It’s no surprise that SBS is trying to finagle an extension out of its new hit Wednesday-Thursday drama I Hear Your Voice — it’s cracktastic, and well made, and nearing the 20% mark in ratings (last Thursday’s Episode 10 brought in 19.7%).

The network is reportedly in talks with producers about a 2-episode extension, which would bring the total count to 18. Among the bigger factors are the scripts and the actors’ schedules, especially with Lee Jong-seok due back on the set of The Face Reader soon after the drama wraps.

The production has also been plagued with spoiler leaks online, and though the writer has said that she’s sticking to her story, this may open up a chance to throw the audience a curveball. Just yunno, let’s keep it this side of sane, yeah? I’m all for smiting the spoiler purveyors (Down with all spoilers!) but let’s not sacrifice the story in the name of vengeance. I feel like I’m back to talking Su-ha off that murderous ledge: Don’t hurt yourself trying to stop the crazy!

I rarely meet an extension I like, so I’m wary of anything that’ll drag the pace of the story down, and doubly so when it’s chugging along at breakneck speed like it is in Voice. On the bright side, it’s early enough that if they decide to extend, a reasonable 2-episode arc could be added, and at the end of the day, more of this drama’s cuteness wouldn’t really be so bad (…I say with all fingers and toes crossed).

If the extension goes through, that’ll push the Hong sisters’ Master’s Sun another week, till early August.

Lee Jung Seok's scheduling troubles remind me of Anthony Kim and King of Dramas. Haha I will never forget the use of the body double opposite Siwon's character.

I think a 2 episode extention isnt that bad it only adds up to 18 in total ..
As long as they dont drag the story .-.
And omg how cute are those pics?? In the last pic lee jung-seok is like the odd one out without his mouth open and the v sign. cuuute

LJS doesn't really know how to be goofy =). I watched him in Strong Heart 2 (the 3 of them are guests). He felt uncomfortable everytime he does aegyo =)

This boy actually does a lot of aegyo :)
I think he just likes to do things his own way and just not for show or when being told to so. He seems to do it quite a bit when he's comfortable on set. Lee Bo Young and Kim Woo Bin should know...

It's probably more of he's just uncomfortable talking in front of the camera and not just the aegyo part. He admitted to that in the IHYV episode of Incarnation. He kept sweating nervously in that ep. I remember Kim Gu-ra told him that that was weird for an actor and model, and LJS said something like at least when he was on the runway, all he had to do was walk, he didn't have to talk. LOL. He was the same in his first Strong Heart / talk show appearance (when LSG and KHD were still the hosts) as well. I guess he's just a bit introverted. He doesn't seem to have much of a problem with aegyo when he's around his cast mates, though. :)

Well I thought a 2 episode extension wouldn't be that bad when I was following Protect The Boss, but it totally ruined the pace of the story...

Two more hours doesn't sound like a lot, but man, the damage it can do to an otherwise great drama. I had to drop Protect the Boss when the extension started dragging the story down; I couldn't bear seeing it lose its spark, so I left it while I could still remember it fondly. And don't get me started on that last arc in King of Dramas. :-/

Crossing my fingers that this extension doesn't go through. Please don't mess up my show, SBS. Please, oh please. Not here, not in something this tightly plotted and paced.

yup.
i was thinking. oh, 2 episodes? whatever.
But when you're nearing the end those 2 episodes matter.
Kind of nice if a show you love gets extended, but ideally it should not be extended.
i'd rather show end on a bang than a womp womp

That was my first reaction, too.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I honestly think having an extension, even 2 episodes is a terrible idea seeing how so many dramas become worse because of it.

If the writer already had more that she wanted to add, but couldn't due to the limit of eps (e.g. Remind Me '97), then it works out fine.

But, when it's the network that orders an extension, that means the writer has to either put in needless filler or cook up some artificial/contrived conflict or forced curveball -that otherwise would not have been in the drama- which I will not be looking forward to at all.

Show, stahp. If it ain't broke, don't "fix" it.

I would hate if this amazing show lost steam towards the end because of the extension.

I've never been so torn about an extension... This story is like a train at full speed in terms of pacing and I LOVE this. On the other hand, I wouldn't be against more cute. They could even use the screen time for the secondary characters: Lawyer Cha shouldn't stay in the cold (he won't get the girl obviously) & I'd love for him to have a rebound... With our Prosecutor maybe? An Epilogue episode + a Special would be great.
About the spoilers leaked: I don't want to know anything. "LALALALA..." Wondering who's behind this: Fans, antifans (hear rival channels), publicity stunt from SBS itself...

If there is an extension, I think your idea for an epilogue and a special is excellent. As long as it's not one of those epilogues where they give you side character mini-sagas and only 5 minutes of OTP goodness!

Wait LJS isn't done filming The Face Reader yet?? Doesn't he also have the swimming movie... I saw this tweet from his stylist saying he sleeps 10 hours in 5 days, how is MORE filming even possible? O_O

Other than that... I guess a special episode wouldn't be too bad. Or delving into the dad's/MJK's backstory, so the main characters' schedules won't be badly affected....

I can see them adding, for example, a scene of him washing in the river (after watching recently Oh my lady, the shower scene in IHYV seems almost necessary for the plot compared to Siwon's multiple half naked scenes).

I'm still waiting for an MJG backstory episode.

an extension can be put into good use in wrapping up the stories nicely or for a time jump to show what happens to main and the supporting characters ...

am sure the writer can add some finale stories without affecting the main concept/story-line...

I cannot think of a single show where getting extensions improved it, but I can think of dozens that could have been better if episodes were reduced.

I am pretty leery of this idea - at this point I don't see where they could add much but filler and fluff. I love the show, but not wild about any extensions.

i'm always a no for extension. it usually ends up a disaster and just ruins what was originally a good drama. but after reading the first comments here, i can say that even GF is leaning to the idea even if it's just on the 30degrees angle. lols. right GF?

well considering that it's only 2 episodes, it might be good too. as GF said, this is yet early on the drama and they might have thought of it earlier already, after the first half of the drama and with a lot to explore still, i think that it would be safe and good. even if the story would slow a little in its pacing we are still gonna be showered and treated with so much cute that most of people won't mind at all.

it's 50-50 for ihyv, 50% cuteness, 50% gripping story.

thanks for the post GF!

Koreans print their scripts on white paper. =P King of Dramas plus other sources. So someone on the staff or a relative takes said script and scans it. Since the margin ahead is 4 scripts (about), it's not bad.

Americans, though, put their scripts on blue paper, so when it's photocopied or scanned it's hard to read... X-files and several TV shows do that.

I feel terrible about it, but I'm SO GLAD that Lee Jong-seok is bending time with all the projects he's taken on. They may be literally unable to wedge anything else into his schedule.

OTOH, I don't want to think about what it'll be like for him if this does go through. :(

The only drama I have watched where an extension helped was Giant, because it actually needed those ten episodes due to how packed each episode was with story and character development. However, 99% of the time, extensions ruin the pacing of the drama by adding filler while the drama should be going full speed toward the climax of the story.

I'm gonna agree with the general consensus, and say noooo! The pacing is one of my favorite things about the show and I think an extension would throw it off, regardless of any additional cute. I like cute as much as the next person, but extensions usually require you to get through a lot more angst for just a bit more cute and at the sake of plot/sanity/logic. Nuh-uh. Don't want. (I'm like a little kid throwing a tantrum :P)

We all love the idea of more of something we like. However we all know extensions generally do not add value to the story. Why? Because for some reason the writers and directors do not use the time productively to wrap up loose ends or expand on GOOD elements of the show that could use more screen time. We usually get almost an entire episode of flashbacks, and/or the characters going in circles of angst and/or contrived conflict to extend the show that just makes one want to hurl.

To be fair to the writers, I almost don't blame them for taking that way out. Things are already so tight on a liveshoot, and coming up with additional hours of material can't be easy. If you can pad the time out by tossing in flashbacks and makjang bullshit? I can see the appeal for someone who's overworked and overtired.

Gah! Is right. I don't think I've seen one successful extension. Ex. Answer me 1997 started out to be one of my faves. The ending ruined it for me.

While, the fast pace is one of the greatest aspects of the Voice, I did wonder how they were going to sort things out in a satisfying way. There's so much going on. Each episode felt like a big check mark on a looming deadline.

No, No, No. This writer isn't good enough to do an extension. She'll just stretch the storyline instead of putting more things in.

KES, I could believe could do an extension since she sets up for it just in case, often leaving plot threads that could be worked on if an extension hits her. (But it's only because she's a veteran writer with experience getting burned that way).

This writer can't handle that kind of thing. She hasn't planned for it at all. It'll just make the story longer and mess up the pacing.

(I can go over the technicalities of why I know this, but it would be long and unrelated.)

>.<;; Would make this thread scroll for a while and go into writing and plotting a story... I don't think that many people would be happy with me if I went that long over something not to do with dramas/Korean culture.

It's the relationship of writers, how they produce and how you can tell how the plot is going by consuming enough of their stories. With KES and this writer (Who also did Get Karl and a few other projects I've watched), I've seen enough to know it happens that way.

KES always prepares for the eventuality, leaving plot threads to be picked up on that could be expounded later if need be but never come to fruition. (I picked up on it on Secret Garden, My Princess--which she wrote the second half of, and so on... probably because her first projects were fairly popular... her fingerprints are all over it.)

However, I Can Hear Your Voice has no loose plot threads where it can veer off to. So the only choice this writer has is to either insert an unrelated court case or stretch. Based on previous dramas, it's more likely she'll stretch since coming up with new ideas on the fly is harder than the average person thinks. She only has this plot and has been working hard to give the production lead time to get ahead too.

An extension, though, must sound like a heart attack to a writer... I'd about die if I was told I needed to extend the plot and I'd been pouring my creative heart out thinking we'd never get one.

what leaks? are they bad spoilers?

and how about two eps of su-ha taking showers? just kiddding, don't bring up the feathers and tar.

what if su-ha's mind reading comes back and the added two eps only get to be an epilogue of some kind? i'm all for it. as long as he takes one shower per episode at least. in public view, so to speak.

okay okay, mind out of the gutter.

so far, the story's been gripping. if they add those two eps, can the story be fun and calmly wrap up any loose ends? like a quiet good-bye instead of a walk into the sunset when you never know if they get their HEA or the HFN is forever unspoken and unresolved, etc?

i'd mentioned wanting an extension! but only if it won't ruin the story...

right now, i'm inclined to think it could work. basically there's six more episodes left, originally speaking. i'd love for them to explore the story more at a bit more leisurely pace. in six episodes we're supposed to get to the bottom of min joon-gook, figure out the love triangle, and address do-yeon's parentage. i'm sure it's possible, but personally i wouldn't mind staying in this world a bit longer.

maybe the story won't be as tightly paced as some viewers would like, but as long as the extension doesn't spoil the story, and just gives us more cute/meaningful moments we wouldn't have had time for otherwise, i'm a happy girl.

i haven't watched today's episode, mainly because i'm trying to SAVOR the show as much as possible. it's so good i don't want to watch it right away!
