Kim Hyun-joong offered lead in Age of Feeling

Remember Age of Feeling? I’m happy to have the period action melodrama back in headlines now that it’s courting a new hero—this time in Kim Hyun-joong (Playful Kiss, Boys Before Flowers). Maybe third time will be the charm in scoring a lead?

This is a show that always sounded really cool—action and romance in 1930s Shanghai, amidst the Japanese Occupation and expats in China. On the shallowest level available, think of the nifty fashions and hairstyles and period sets. I’m still looking forward to the show, though admittedly the longer it takes for production to pull together, the more things there are that give me pause. First off, if they get Kim Hyun-joong signed on—he is considering the offer, with no decisions reported—it’ll be the third actor they’ve tried to get.

Granted, just because an actor chose against a drama doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with it, but once a show has a hard time getting on a schedule and two stars pass, you start to wonder. First, the show sought to cast Lee Jun-ki in the lead, but Lee chose instead to go with the MBC thriller Two Weeks. Then it was Kwon Sang-woo’s turn, but he has since confirmed with MBC’s Medical Top Team. Maybe MBC just has a really good recruiting process?

This may be a good way for Kim Hyun-joong to get back into the acting swing of things after his last drama, City Conquest, failed to get picked up, especially since his variety program Barefoot Friends is floundering. On the other hand, Kim Hyun-joong… is not my first choice for this drama. Or second. Or third. I’m willing to keep an open mind about the possibility that he’ll be better in the future than he has been in the past—but that doesn’t mean I can ignore how he’s been in the past.

KBS has finally settled on a fall timeslot for Age of Feeling, with an eye toward a November broadcast as a Wednesday-Thursday drama.

Also: For some reason Kim Hyun-joong threads have a way of turning into minefields. I would really, really like for this one to stay sane. Don’t make me go over there.

Now that his face is so plastic-y (and him just being unrecognizable) just does not help with his acting problems, now we're going to get even less facial expressions >.>

And this drama sounds like it has alot of potential too...

its hilarious, when some ppl here said "He shouldn't act,he has yet to improve his acting skills"
what a irrational comments.....

How can he improve if you don't give him a chance?
How can you know he has yet to improve if you don't give him a chance?
Don't judge a people from their past because they're no longer in that state of their life (in this case it's acting skills)
honestly, some ppl here should IMPROVE their personalities first.......no offence

He could do morning dramas, weekend dramas, daily dramas, drama specials before being the lead to a primetime drama.

of course

but your comment and those comments with “He shouldn’t act,he has yet to improve his acting skills” from some other ppl here is a different story.

I'm talking to those ppl who judge him without even give him any chance to try.
that why I don't understand your point to reply to my comment.

His/Her point was to stick with shows that he could work hard on and improve instead of jumping into bigger projects that require alot more from actors/actresses.
If you're taking on a primetime show you should expect all eyes on you and the pressure is higher. If your acting is not yet up to par then expect alot of backlash and hate.
I mentioned below but again, he's taking on a role that requires a good amount of acting skill to be able to portray such dramatic and in-depth character, a character which he has never once before come close to portraying.
I'm not saying he shouldn't challenge/push himself. But this is not the project for him if he can't even do some of the basics of acting first -- like emoting.
We're not saying don't give him projects; we're saying he should take on easier roles that are more suitable to the range he currently has. And if he's ready after improving on smaller-scale projects, then by all means take on this role.
But thinking objectively do you really think a man with that acting level is even remotely ready to take on this role?
Some of the examples shiku mentioned are good; he can improve on those kinds of shows.
I'm just going to tell you that you should be ready for all the backlash kim hyu joong is going to get once this project airs.

I understand your point, actually I already aware of all that you have mention.

I'm totally fine with comments like"he's bad actor,I'll pass,I'm disappoint" its personal perferences,I don't mind.

but I can't stand those ppl who said "he shouldn't act or he has yet to improve" because its irrational and non-logical in the first place since those ppl not even give him a chance, then how can they know he improve or not,how can he improve? thats my point.

I wonder why shiku reply to me only because I'm talking about those who said he shouldn't act, shouldn't act =/= shouldn't act in primetime slot(which mean she okay if he want to act, just not primetime and she actually give him a chance) that why I asking since her replied to me wasn't connect with my point at all.

Thank you so much for you concered,
I believed that most of KHJ's fans are strong, we always ready for backlash (well, isn't drama fans always bashing him?)
even if he will get backlash from this drama, its sitll worth for him to try, Hyun Joong is a fighter,a strong one.

moreover I think backlash and hate are actually good sometime if you look into the positive way.
something that isn't kill you but hurt you,is actually make you stronger.

Well said mila. How can someone improve when others dont want to give him another chance. Im pretty sure they saw something in himto cast him for it.i personally think he's improved from what i saw in the cc teaser.
Breaking news y'all, i just read he's accepted the role. Kim hyun joong, fighting!!!prove them all detractors wrong!

I am okay with giving KHJ a chance when it comes to acting, but not in a lead role. Too much is at stake, and to begin with, he is not even naturally adept at it.
I wish he would follow some other idols who stick it out and do rather well in supporting roles.
But I think KHJ does not have any say in this, he is merely following his agency's orders.
If he does get the role, which I think he will, he needs to have non-stop acting lessons 24/7.

This is a serious project that he's taking on.
Rather than a leap he should be taking baby steps in improving on projects that are more suitable to his current acting state.
If one is not ready to take on a project quite at this level, then one's acting skills will be alot more glaring. That means alot more backlash for him as an actor, which is sad because i find him likeable. His lack of emoting will just be jarring -- or i just won't feel for his character as much as i should.
Sure, he could "feel" ready. But his resume would tell us otherwise. In fact, none of the roles on his resume required him to play such dramatic characters with alot of depth.
Even city conquest (action adventure) was fine with me considering we're still in the modern days and there's still plenty of room for some light, comedy stuff. I'm a big believer in taking slower, steady steps for improvement rather than jumping into things you're not quite ready for. But some can argue against that, since everyone's views are different.
But this is very gaksital-esque -- and a period drama at that -- that was attached to big name actors like lee jun ki and kwon sang woo who can really act.
If he can prove to me that he's actually ready to take on a period drama like this come airing time -- i'll eat my words.
Suzy jumped right into the role of yeo wool, and looked at all the backlash she got -- bless her soul.

yes....100% true.
He should take it easy, step by step....
do the rom-com funny light drama that suit his images..
or
he could do 24/7 action course, maybe enter in Seoul Art Institute ?
this changes of main lead are mess up my mind like :
From LJK to KSW to KHJ ????....seriously ?...whoaa
admit it, this role when offered to LJK first, must be not a simple light drama.
LJK & KSW...those 2 before are serious actor not an idol turn actor.
well, I heard that mostly they will offer to LJK first.
well...his name is bankable in dramaland, his last Arang made the most expensive drama sold. ( Network happy - Producer happy - investor beaming ).
KHJ is a hallyustar in KPOP...
yes, but his name not proven bankable in dramaland.
when his CC rejected in KBS, I just sensed that the network already got enough loss before, that's why they asked for some changes of cast ( maybe the lady lead are not bankable ??? storyline not so bankable ??? )
it's not a good image as in Hallyu star to be air not in Big Three.
so, fans be prepared that KHJ will have all 'suzy sindrome backlash '...take it easy, and support your bias Whatever It Takes and just dont go for blood and hate...
just fly over to Seoul and be there for KHJ 1st serious role.
maybe like do the advertisement all over Seoul ?
give tons of tons of rice wreaths ?
throw many fan events on shooting area ?
showering everyone around him with gifts ?

Even though this guy was in my first drama ever, (which means I will always have a soft spot in my heart for him) his acting is not... not the greatest. but as I said, soft spot :) I do hope that whoever gets the role, be it him or someone else, will do an amazing job with it.

Nobody really knows if he has improved or not until we watch his next project. Who knows, this may even be his cup of tea since its a 180 degrees shift from his previous projects, story-wise and character-wise.

I know that Kim Hyun Joong isn't the best actor, but I really have this desire to see him in another drama? Will this be the drama for him? To be honest, I'm not sure. I was really looking forward to City Conquest, but that one fell through. The third time could be the charm. His third drama, the third lead actor that they're pursuing....

We'll have to wait and see!

I really hate how people like to hate so much. Kim Hyun Joong is called a bad actor for what people have called his 'stony' acting when he got stony characters. I read both mangas , Hana Yori Dango + Itazura Na Kiss. I dont see how his acting could've been better at all. Rui, or ji hoo, was totally calm and almost emotionless most of the time as was Naoki , Baek Seung Jo. Kim Hyun Joong wouldve killed both roles if he had shown more emotion. Of course that compared to Lee Min Hos BOF character, Jun Pyo who was an emotional rollercoaster, HyunJoong would look like a bad actor. Before his acting is judged , his characters should be as well. From the small glimpses I had from City Conquest , he did not seem bad at all acting a stronger and colorful character. I can't wait to see how he handles a livelier and more emotionally wild character. I hope many of you who are dissapointed at him being offered this role will consider my thoughts before judging him so harshly. :)

I read many comments here, how controvertial he is, most of them are against him, But thanks everybody to talk about him, It helps him and the drama to be watched to KHJ fans to enjoy seiing him on the TV which we miss or for you to critic him, but as he said in his song SHUT UP, everything is going well, he doesnt matter what you say, your opinion is nothing since he does what He wants and he learns from City Conquest to be strong and face failures. He is simplly trying what he likes and doing it for his fans, also going to the Army giving us something to see during his absence. Good memories. Even if the drama will be as you say bad, we , his international fans will suport him because we like to do, when he goes to the Army other actors have the chance to superate him, in acting, could be but how he is personaly imposible, his carisma is unique.
