Kim Yoo-jung returns to weekends on MBC with new drama

It’s always a treat to watch our favorite child actors growing up nicely onscreen, so I’m happy to hear that Kim Yoo-jung (The Moon That Embraces the Sun) has been cast in her next drama, titled Gold Rainbow. Not to pick at nits, but… don’t those two words self-negate? Isn’t a gold rainbow just a gold disc of stripes?

On the downside, it’s too bad Kim Yoo-jung’s show isn’t that one with Yeo Jin-gu, with all the planets and potatoes. But they’re young; they’ll have years and years to act with each other again. A slightly more significant downside (depending on how you look at it) is that Gold Rainbow comes from the producers who put forth last year’s weekend drama May Queen. Which… meh.

Kim Yoo-jung must have liked working with writer Sohn Young-mok and the production team in May Queen, because she chose this out of numerous drama offers. The drama centers around seven orphans who are closer and more tightly bonded than blood siblings. Okay, that sounds heart-tuggingly sweet, I’ll give you. Kim Yoo-jung will play the eldest sister who feels burdened by not knowing who her parents are.

The show will jump ahead to later in their adult lives, but like May Queen it will spend considerable time with the young children’s story. According to one producer, the childhood portion will span 10 episodes, which is quite a hefty amount of screentime. Also like May Queen, this series will also be set against a seaside backdrop.

Gold Rainbow will be a weekend drama for MBC that’ll replace the current series, Scandal. It plans to begin filming in September and will premiere in November.

Hope to see her in her own drama. With Yeo Jin-Gu!She's a very talented young actress. I'm anticipating her future projects. Child Actors in Korea are daebak!

I got a bit confused with your statements, "I thought HJH in METS?" :) With regards to MQ, storywise, too makjang and characters doesn't make much sense. But the childhood portions are tolerable, especially with the acting of most of the child casts esp. KYJ. Sadly, HJH didn't do it for me, same with how KYJ out-acted HGI in METS happened in MQ with HJH. I guess she was still trying to figure things out after her long break from acting.

Watch the childhood part and skip the rest for your sanity. I sat through the whole makjang nonsense (esp the last few episodes) and I don't recommend you to do that.

Skip May Queen unless it's the childhood portion of the show.

For Han Ji Hye, try I Summon You Gold aka Pots of Gold

I personally loved it. Of course, I'm a huge Kim Jae-won fan, so I could be a *tiny* bit bias, lol. Still, the childhood portions were cute, and I loved the romance. But yeah, a bit makjang, but aren't most weekend dramas?? Kinda comes with the territory.

I loved HJH in sweet18, one of the earlier dramas I watched. And I'm really liking I summon you gold too.. So I thought of giving MQ a chance.. But thanks for the heads up everyone... :) I'm not into too much makjang and I'm not willing to "not like" her. So drama dropped.. :)

pearl, everyone has different taste. :) Give it a go. I loved the child portion very much. I also didn't mind the older cast. I think they all did a very nice job. The story line is melodramatic with lots of tears, birth secrets, murder, etc. However, I just loved the relationships. You have the character Kang San played by Kim Jae Won, who is easy going, smart, and very cheeky. You have Chang Hee, a cold character who couldn't escape the darkness, but sacrifices his needs for the good of all, played by Jae Hee. The of course, the lovely hae joo who is a character unlike any of your typical female korean characters played by HJH. She is family centered, kind, but speaks her mind, and will stand up for herself, who is also very smart, tom boyish and knows how to build ships. How cool is that? lol And her character never really changes... she remains spunky and defends herself until the end.

Yay for Kim Yoo Jung and having her talent for 10 episodes, quite substantial for a childhood part. But, the writer is really so meh. But I'll still check it out.

On a different note, this little lady is on her way to top star status.

Oh, i dont doubt for once that people in kdramaland are going to get both yeo jin goo and kim yoo jung to star in a drama once both are older.
It's not common to see costars working together again(why is that, i wonder?) when it comes to k-ent but this is a pair that much happen again! It's just too bittersweet because we've seen them grow up right before our eyes.

The funny thing is for May Queen I sat through a few episodes with the child cast and after that I couldn't stand it. Hmm...so 10 episodes may be good after all?

I absolutely enjoyed the first eight episodes of May Queen because of the child cast but dropped the drama when they turned adults. Idk, 10 episodes sounds good to me, i had thought she would be headlining the whole full drama..if Japan serials can do it, why can't k dramas? (aside from queen's classroom that is)

I don't know what it is that keeps me tuned into Queens Classroom(so much frustrations, they're 6th graders! so they act like 6th graders), but i think i'm in it for the long run to see the teacher crack, alongside the poignant story of child actor chun bo geun's character.

probably the title means the rainbow that takes you to the pot of gold. not the rainbow itself being golden otherwise they would say golden rainbow.

Good point! grammar does serve some vital communicative purposes ;-)

On the other hand, there are different types of gold - yellow, red, pink, white - I mean the alloys used for jewellery. So one could imagine something like all those together. Just saying...

There's a legend: if anyone finds the end of rainbow, he will see a pot of gold there (guarded by a Leprechaun).

yeah, that's what I thought as well when reading gold and rainbow. maybe they mean it like this, but it should be phrased better..

in my country there's another legend of the rainbow, though it probably won't apply here, i.e. if a woman finds the end of the rainbow, she'll turn into a man, and viceversa, a man will turn into a woman....

I guess a gold rainbow would technically be a Golden Arch... Maybe they were trying to avoid unfortunate McDonald's connotations.

Kim Yoo-jung and Yeo Jin-gu are two of my most favorite young actors in Korea. I love them together and apart. I cant wait till they are both grown up and do a movie or drama together.

K-drama child actors are truly awesome. Where do they find all these talents!?

Kim Yoo-jung is undoubtedly very very gifted and it doesn't hurt that she has a gorgeous face which reminds me a bit of SHK. Best luck to her and the drama!

If I were asked to name my favorite Korean actress I would have to skip all the adults out there and go straight to Kim Yoo Jung. She has never ever disappointed me (even if the script does) and I foresee a long and prosperous career for this incredible talent.

/end gushing.

So yes, I would at least check out Gold Rainbow. And since I watched the entire MQ series I'll know what kind of crazysauce I'll be served.

Have to say, KYJ did disappoint a bit in "Dong Yi" due to overacting, but I blame that on the PD and writer since the majority of the cast overacted.

Lee Byung Hoon may have some hit dramas but he doesn't seems to know how to direct young actors. If you think Dong Yi was bad, try his latest, Horse Healer.

One of my favorite young actresses!! She's fantastic. I didn't even finish May Queen, but loved her part at the beginning. I'll probably at least join in to see her part in this.

I can't wait for her and Yeo Jin gu to star as opposites as adults...or at least leads. High school drama?

Ooooo....me too, me too!! They were such a cute OTP in Revolt of the Gumiho; cute, heart-tugging yet heart-wrenching and tragic. I remembered Lee Min-ho saying he had a crush on her whilst filming this drama. Wish there was a drama where their OTP's ended together. Sigh. Well.....here's looking forward to them growing up and having a love-line. ^^

Required fields are marked *

yeah, I love them in Gumiho's child (Revolt/Revenge). He's her first on-screen kiss. But I also love her pairing with YJG in TMTETS. She even had a great chemistry with Park Gun-tae in May Queen. She has charisma, something that cannot be learned on any acting school ... it's either you have it or you dont.

me three! lol. I want to see them in a drama where they are the leads someday. It's hurting my heart that lee min ho is denied the girl twice now! Once in guhimo and second time in Moon embracing the sun. Which reminds me of an interview KYJ and LMH did while filming guhimo, and LMH talked about their kissing scene. LOL. He said that was actually his first kiss scene, but not for KYJ so it is her who stole his innocence, etc. LOL

Yeo jin goo's fans will hate me, but honestly, I don't think he's that cute. He's a good actor though. :D (waiting for stones to be tossed at me now :P)

I cannot wait until she becomes a grown up female lead in her own right though! Her and Kim So-hyun (also from Moon Embraces the Sun) are two lovely young actresses to watch!

Doubt it, she's done more drama and movies than Park Shin Hye and she is only 15. The only thing stopping her from playing a more serious and grown up roles is her age. My only hope is that she wont disappear from dramaland once she gets older. The most talented actors in Korea prefer doing movies than dramas which is understandable.

Plus Kim Yoo Jung's roles are more diverse. She has done a lot of genres and was able to excel on all of them despite her age. I also like Park Shin Hye, but lately most of her roles are the same. Most of her dramas are the addictive but fluffy kind. And this type of dramas don't really showcase her acting potential.

After "Miracle in Cell No. 7" with Ryoo Seung-ryong, you'd think she would keep going on that path but no, she came back to Yoon Shi-yoon and Lee Min-hoo for more fluffy dramas. /Sigh*

I friggin' LOVE her! She did a wonderful job in "May Queen" and then Han Jihye came and messed it right up. RIGHT UP!

I have yet to see lead actresses outshine their talented young counterparts. I've seen it with older actors and their young actor counterparts, but these older actresses, they rarely ever tap into the magic of their counterparts. Yoon Eunhye and Lee Boyoung BARELY touched the magic Kim Sohyun created for their characters. The same way Han Jihye failed with her "May Queen" character. At first, I thought it was the writing, but when it became a trend, I realized child actresses are just more talented than the actresses of today.

Well, some of them, anyway...

actually i agree that kim yoo Jung act better than adult cast in May queen but i still watch that drama because the story is interesting in one actress/actor can't ruin a drama for me except he/she has dominan role, what i see in May Queen is even the title is May Queen the dominan role is Jae Hae. The title may queen only match in child actor part.
The funny thing is my favorite charracter is young Hae jo but after adult part I like Chang hee

I just fell in love with Yeo Jin Goo and Kim Yoo Jung in The Moon Embracing the Sun. I'm actually more attached to their pairing than Kim Soo Hyun and Han Ga In even though Soo Hyun was excellent in the drama. I hope that someday they'd be paired up again--as LEADS this time, and not just younger versions of the adult OTP--in an awesome romance drama when they're a lot older. They have lovely chemistry and she's beautiful.
