Age of Feeling gets its hero and leading ladies

Sooooo, I’ve got some good news and some bad news for ya. And maybe some more bad news. I’ll let you decide which is which.

KBS’s 1930s period action-melo series Age of Feeling is back in action with a flurry of casting announcements, so hopefully three time’s the charm as idol-actor Kim Hyun-joong (Playful Kiss, Boys Before Flowers) takes the leading role. (The drama was previously passed up by Lee Jun-ki, who took Two Weeks instead, and Kwon Sang-woo, who took Medical Top Team.) My interest was piqued ever since I first heard this show announced, so I’m glad that it’s heading into actual production; the fizzled castings had me worried for a while. The show is set in Shanghai during the years of Japan’s occupation of Korea and much of the Pacific, which offers up plenty of opportunities for drama up in this drama.

One of the leading ladies will be played by Im Soo-hyang (IRIS 2, I Do I Do), who reportedly fell in love with the script and beat out several actresses for the role. Her character is an “ambitious and irresistible” woman with loads of charisma. She has a romantic relationship with hero Jung-tae (Kim Hyun-joong), but it’s because of his father that she loses the parents she’d only just found after ten years of separation, and thus twists their relationship into a fraught love-hate version.

Kim So-eun (Happy Endings, Horse Healer) will be taking up another lead role (reports state that she’s verbally agreed and will be working out casting details) as a young lady with a tough, courageous attitude. (So… Im Soo-hyang is Rie and Kim So-eun is Mok Dan?) Her character becomes a singer (okay, so flashes of Lala), only to take up with the independence movement (no, Mok Dan again) once her first love dies. Thus she “holds a microphone in one hand and a bomb in the other.”

I foresee that with the genre, time period, and character types in play, Age of Feeling is sure to attract a number of Gaksital comparisons; that’s just inevitable. I do hope that the series can find a way to make this its own thing, because there’s a wealth of narrative possibilities in this world. Even if my reaction to the casting has dimmed the excitement a bit. Just please don’t pull a Poseidon with all your actor-swapping and story-sucking. Please?

Age of Feeling will be a 24-episode drama to premiere in November.

I do love Im Soo Hyang, so if she is the Rie of this, I'll be very sad. And probably hate the other one as much as I did Mok Dan. Although I have to admit, it was the actress who put me off there...

Now if Kim Hyun Joong has actually learned to act and manages to channel his soul back into his body and expressions when filming, this might actually be half good. I'll give him a chance, since this is the first non-fluff work he's done.

LOL I share your skepticism about KHJ's acting abilities. Better not compare him to Joo Won otherwise we'd probably all be bitterly disappointed.

Oh dear, don't even mention such a comparison. Ahaha. Im Soo Hyang has her problems too, but she personally makes me feel a lot when she does get it right. But Kim will have to really do it this time. It's not fluff and no amount of "cute" scenes will save him.

Ditto here. KHJ has a LOT of soul and emotion when he's singing, so it's kinda funny that he couldn't channel that into his acting (deliver the lines without the melody, go!). But I still like him, and hope he has improved his acting chops. The leading ladies are solid, and I will refrain from making any Gakistal comparisons.

I had the exact same reaction. I haven't gotten used this more masculine image of his despite watching some of his more recent musical performances (maybe its because I'm use to seeing him more as a flower boy in dramas?). Anyway, what piqued my interest was the fact that it reminds me of Galsitsl. Loved Galsital to bits so if this is something similar (but not a carbon copy ofc) then you can count me as a viewer. However, I'm skeptical about the acting chops (or lack of) KHJ and ISH. I like KSE so maybe if the director is awesome, maybe he could pull something great out of the other 2?

Okay, deep breath. Who do I actually want to watch there?

Kim So Eun. Is she enough to counteract the other 2 leads?

Oh my goodness, what a bad decision. The thing is I love KHJ- the singer and variety personality. And his real life persona whatever we can see from the media.

I did watch the Gisaeng drama all whatever 30+ episode of it. She doesn't emote well.

How can we watch something where 2 main leads can't emote????

Im floored that they are giving this guy yet another lead role. I guess people will still watch him, even though he is one of the suckiest actors around. How many shows does he have to ruin before fans finally give up on him? How long will it take before everyone realizes that singing and acting are totally different talents? Bring out the usual litany of excuses. ( hes a nice person! But hes so cuteeeee! But hes improving!!)
I dont see any improvement, in either his acting or the marketing-minded practices of producers and management.

As long as he's famous and popular with connections, it will keep happening. If he manages to at least not suck as bad as he has so far, it will be watchable. If he does suck, everyone but his hardcore fans will drop it and show their disapproval through ratings.

Because idols who can't act will only stop being cast when they are not profitable. It's a sad reality for the drama industry in Korea. For me, this is the last chance I give him as an actor. This is the first serious work he's doing. If he still can't find some (very well hidden) talent, then he's not someone I want to watch. However nice a person he is, however popular a musician, I will not watch his acting when there's none to be found. And I guess most of us feel that way.

Anyway, hope this will be a 16-20 episode drama as one of the reasons I didn't watch Gaksital was due to its length (and slow first episodes). The only one actress I liked in Gaksital was the one who played Rie. Here, I'm meh about (Rie) Im Soo-hyang (though I heard good stuff about her in Iris 2(?)

KHJ is not really that bad IMO plus I miss Kim So-eun in dramas so hope she signs the contract already.

I'm not really a fan of KHJ's music or his looks, but for some reason I'd still want to watch him in dramas. Either I really like underdogs or I'm just perverse enough to watch some actors who gets bashed here and not watch those who gets sooooo much looove. Or maybe I'm just stubborn that the more negative stuff is thrown at some actors I find likable, the more I want to watch them. Hehe. ;)

I just don't know what to do with KHJ. Watching him in Barefoot Friends (and on Hwasin today) has made me feel kind of feel sorry for him. He seems to be such a loner and so cautious about what people think and what he does. It's as if he wants to be confident, but he's not. Or is it false humility? Because sometimes the way he acts feels like that. Then again, it seems like he's pressured by the demand of "What are you going to do next?" even though he just released an album. He seems like he's always holding back.

So, all that to say that I hope he comes through with acting that really wows in this drama. I did love him as second lead 4D in BoF. He and JanDi would have been good for each other as a couple.

KHJ - I am rooting for you to be confident and do your best! ♥

The industry is giving him a huge gift, an acting career all tied up in a big red ribbon, and he is cautious and diffident? This does not endear him to me, it makes me want to give him a swift kick in the pants. He's getting what others can only dream about, regardless of his negligible abilities. He ought to be grabbing it with both hands and boiling over with ambition.

I don't get him too. It's clear that he is sucky at acting, and it seems like he knows it too. Based from the unaired footage of City Conquest that they released, he hasn't improved that much despite the acting lessons he got for that drama. The better choice would be to try supporting roles first, but it's just so strange that he would be gunning for lead roles instead. Is he that powerless against his management? Or does he really want the lead roles himself?

Required fields are marked *

If you're statement is based on what "OWL" said, which is his/her opinion from a show he was on, then it's not a fair statement. You are implying that he got the role easily and is not grateful for the opportunity.

If KHJ really is cautious, there is nothing wrong with that since he's not an experienced actor and he knows himself that he has a lot to learn.

How do you know he's not ambitious about it? The casting has only been recently confirmed so I'm sure he's waiting for all sides of the production to confirm before saying anything about it. With what happened to City Conquest, I can understand why he might feel a bit cautious because his name is forever tied to a drama that did not get aired - even though no one except those involved really know the reason.

From what I know of him, he's a very hard-worker and will definitely do his best in all aspects. I look forward to seeing his improvement onscreen.

Oh but you don't have to "endure" anything...if you don't like him or his acting, just don't watch it.

I don't understand why people keep saying that they are disappointed or pissed off or don't want to have to watch him onscreen because he's horrible. If you don't like an actor for whatever reason, that is definitely your personal choice and you definitely do NOT have to watch him.

My initial reaction as a "fangirl" was NOT "“but he/she is improving!!!!” I was simply replying to the poster who assumed he wasn't grateful for the role given and I said I was looking forward to his improvement onscreen because, in my PERSONAL opinion, I do think he has improved since three years ago.

This sounds really interesting. I'm especially excited about Kim Hyun-joong. Thanks to Barefoot Friends, I've grown to like him a lot more. I just hope the acting lessons he took have paid off. He's a great person, and terrific singer. I hope his acting has improved.

I just don't understand how do you go from Lee Jun-ki to Kwon Sang-woo to Kim Hyun-joong. Korea's casting process is always weird to me because of the role that clearly is and the actors that they're trying to cast for it. This series for example, if its one that needs emotive actors (and the name for crying out loud says Age of Feeling) then throwing out or going after names like Lee Min-ho, Jang Geun-suk, Gong Yoo or Lee Seung-gi makes more sense to me. You can argue that they may not fit the period age or role but KHJ does? That's what makeup and costume is for and acting chops come in.

By no means am I bashing or not giving KHJ a chance cause like many of you, I love KHJ as a variety personality and entertainer. I think he's quirky, fun and talented and maybe should be in a role that channels more of that. A rom-com where he's mischievous and cheeky with room for growth and maturity sounds like a winner to me.

I'm also open and up for unlikely pairings cause sometimes the best chemistry and rapport are from actors you don't expect BUT of course, I'd love to see a Kim Bum and Kim So-eun pairing again because let's get real, they're not only cute together but they were the best thing about Boys Before Flowers in terms of chemistry and consistency. I know same pairings over and over would be dull and redundant but it's not to say that casting directors shouldn't capitalize on some winning combos and re-team actors like these for movie magic and fan satisfaction. Still waiting for Gong Yoo/Yoon Eun-hye, Jung Kyung-ho/Lee Min-jung and redemption for Chun Jung-myung/Moon Geun-yeung cause it started out so well the first 4 eps that I wanted the whole series to be that awesome.

Yeah, that was my gripe about casting and how the process doesn't ever make sense but here's hoping to the best for Age of Feeling!

Pros:

-I like Kim Hyun Joong.

-I do not like Im Soo-hyang.

-I like Kim So-eun.

-The time period is historical interesting.

Cons:

-I am not sure KHJ is right for this kind of role.

-Kim So-eun is not the female lead.

-I generally do not enjoy watching dramas from this time period.

-I've not watched anything from the Director

-Is there a screenwriter?

Viewing Verdict: Maybe I will check out the first two episodes and make a decision. It's 24 episodes so I will not commit easily to a maybe.

Kim Hyun Jung had better improve! The guy must definitely know that acting field is not his! Well, I said that based on his weak performances I had seen, but who knows? I hope he proves me wrong with this.
Kim So Eun! such a lovely lady she is. I hope this one will be a kickass for her. She sure deserves what she deserves for what she brings!
For Im Soo Hyang, I only watched her in IRIS, and I couldn't tell she left something special. I hope she will with this project.

off-topic: I can believe Im Soo Hyang is younger by a year than Kim So Eun. I thought she is a 85? She sure looks way more mature than her age.

My interest was piqued when I first heard that Lee Jun Ki was considering taking on the lead role in this drama. I do think that he will be perfect for the character. He does have the acting chops and martial art background to pull off a period action-melo. I felt kinda let down when casting didn't pan out but still continued to root for the drama since I do like the premise.

I do feel conflicted though as I read this post. I am happy that the drama is getting some movement casting-wise but really dreading that they might be making a huge mistake by casting KHJ in the lead. Don't get me wrong... I do like KHJ's variety show persona as well as a singer but as an actor, I do think he needs more experience and training before he can portray any role that requires depth and substance. That being said, I do hope that if the production ever goes with KHJ as the lead that he has greatly improved in his acting range...

Ah, the casting is quite shocking!

Honestly, I loved Kim Hyunjoong in Playful Kiss. I stopped watching cheesy fluffy rom-com years ago, but I happened to enjoy Playful Kiss more than I ever expected (I like it better than BBF). But this is no PK or BBF, and as the other have said, I kinda doubt KHJ's skill because I never find his acting special. He still has a chance to do better, though, so I'll be positive and hold any judgment until the drama airs.

I've never watched any of Im Soohyang's drama (only a bit of IRIS II), so I don't have any opinion about her. Surprise me, lady!

And I'm so glad Kim Soeun is in! I haven't heard of her for quite a long time, it's time for a fierce comeback! I love Soeun, and I hope her character will be more unique than her previous roles.

Overall, Age of Feeling sounds interesting so far. A little bit too Gaksital, but I won't make any comparison in any way... for now.

P.S. Aren't we getting a second male lead?

KHJ is very good and talented as a singer and variety show member. but when he doing some acting ?? its not good, sometimes i pity the production team if KHJ as their lead male. playful kiss (korea version) is dissapointed me a lot !!!

KHJ looks like robocop when he doing some acting. i never get any vibration or feeling from his acting skill , sorry to say. but i think he has to learn a lot on theater or take a acting lesson or take a role on family k-drama (100 episode) to upgrade his acting skill.

becoz he just only focuz on how he looks when he doing acting in his drama. he remains me a lot to song seung hun . he just there, not doing anything. sigghhhhh

Kim So-eun , contrary from KHJ . this girl is growing, she upgrade her acting skill, i adore her acting skill on horse doctor, so i have a strong believe on her acting. she knows how to act

all i can say : bad choice for lead actor but great choice for lead actress. good luck with this drama.

but his skill on barefoot friend : i have to say his very good and very active on barefoot friend becoz he is not affraid to do any task from pd-nim especially when he went to indonesia (did a "gendong" task with that heavy fruit on his back) and vietnam, , so i gave him a good credit for his role on barefoot friend.
