Bae Soo-bin and Lee Da-hee join Secret

Now that leads Ji Sung and Hwang Jung-eum are confirmed for KBS’s new melodrama Secret, it’s time to get our second leads squared away. They got some pretty great ones, I have to say — Bae Soo-bin (49 Days) and Lee Da-hee (I Hear Your Voice) — though I suppose when your plot hinges on a love square, you can’t be flimsy with your second leads.

The melodrama is about a “fatal romance” between a man who loses his girlfriend in an accident (Ji Sung), and falls in love with the woman responsible for her death (Hwang Jung-eum). The twist is that Hwang Jung-eum only went down for the crime because she loved her boyfriend so much she was willing to go to prison for him, and he abandons her while she’s doing time.

Bae Soo-bin plays a brilliant and righteous prosecutor, who one day does a complete turnaround and becomes an ambitious man, hungry for power. The kicker? He’s the boyfriend Hwang Jung-eum goes to jail for. Gasp. (But now it’s starting to make sense — she did it for his career as a prosecutor.) So he’ll be the one with the most power, but also the most to lose in this game. His character promises to show the height of heartlessness and desperation. He sounds a lot like his 49 Days character, with a few tweaks. Or Nice Guy’s Park Shi-yeon, take your pick.

Lee Da-hee’s character has less backstory to go on, but she’ll be the one with an unrequited love (I’m guessing for Ji Sung, though they don’t specify). She’s described as “thirsty for love,” and she’ll be a character in pain because she can’t have the one person she wants. I just find it funny that she’s going from Lee Bo-young’s frenemy-turned-friend in I Hear Your Voice to having a one-sided crush on her hubby-to-be. She was cast late in the game due to her standout performance in Voice, which is great for her. I can’t say that her character sounds anywhere near as awesome, but this is a conventional melo, so there won’t be any heartwarming reluctant friendships to be found here. Bring on the tears.

Secret follows Sword and Flower and premieres in September.

I know this has been done before, but it actually sounds really good to me right now. Kind of looking forward to it!

"He sounds a lot like his 49 Days character, with a few tweaks. Or Nice Guy’s Park Shi-yeon, take your pick"
LOL! exactly somewhat like character for BSB in this drama..

I watched several dramas with BSB in Brilliant Legacy, Dong Yi, 49 days..and I can say he's a good actor, yet He always land on a 2nd lead in the drama. I hope one day someone will give him a lead role.

Haven't watch any drama of both leads (Ji-sung & Hwang Jung-eum before)
I like Lee Da Hee's portrayal as a prosecutor on IHYV, so ill watch out for her in this drama obviously.

Yeah...I think we can safely say that Mr. Sad Eyes isn't getting the girl... again. I know no other actor, aside from Jung Suk Won, whose characters have such consistently bad lucky with the ladies.

I'm glad his not getting the girl because his character description sounds like he'll be a jerk. Bae soo bin other roles other then 49 days weren't such a jerk, so I would root for him but not this time.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm not pitying the character, merely the consistency with which this guy doesn't get the girl. The character sounds like a Grade A a**hole. No sympathy on that point.

I hate when they cast actors I love in dramas that I think I'll hate. I'm going to watch. And I'm probably going to complain about the story. It's a terrible cycle. Why can't my favorites just pick awesome dramas? It would make my drama watching life so much easier.

So true! I love these actors, but the story sounds like something right out of a daily drama, it's so trite. All we need is cancer, a birth secret, and someone getting water thrown in their face (or juice, as is sometimes used just to change things up).
I think I am going to love the acting but hate the story, while on the other hand I adore ghost stories - but absolutely refuse to watch yet another idol-with-delusions-of-talent, so Who Are You is not on my list of shows to watch. Sigh.
At least Kdrama tends to get in these thematic ruts, so you can bother to choose the ghost story du jour that has the cast you find most appealing.

Out of two "bads" I normally choose the one with a good story. I like stories a bit more than acting.

Me too.

I'm not keen on Secret at all, as the basic set up with love quadrangles already makes me gag.

I would have loved Lee Da Hee to get a different role – and certainly not to fall back to the typical second lead role we've seen too many times before.

I'm not sure I'll watch.

While I'm sad that its back to second lead territory for BSB I'm gald that at least it sounds like a meaty role and he will get to unleash his awesomeness in a very fiery manner instead of,just being another daddy-long-legs oppa to the lead

And we'll, you've got my attention new drama. I like the actors but the plot. Is the source of my reluctance.

I'm starting to think Bae Soo Bin is the master of the love square with a speciality as 2nd male lead melo.

I thought she was great in My Girl and Miss Ripley, hope she'll do well in this drama too.

What I like about the plot is that I think the second leads end up falling in love with each other - nothing better than getting two love stories for the price of one, imho.

I doubt the characterization would be that trivial... or at least, I hope not. I'm assuming there will be some sort of redemption arc for his character.

I like that Lee Da Hee gets to work with the soon to be married couple. Love her performance in IHYV, I read about the casting rumor last week and I wished that she'd be the lead actress instead.

i have no intention of watching this show because it sounds like the Meloest Melo that ever Meloed. But, in my mind, I'm melding this show with IHYV and a bit of real life to create a world where Jang Hye-Sung, Seo Do-yeon and Ji-sung and Oska are involved in an awesome four-way BFFship. I didn't realize it until I read this post, but that's all I've ever wanted out of life.

So...I laughed a lot at the "thirsty for love" bit because of how "thirsty" is being used nowadays--usually in a joking manner but mostly for really desperate people (like cat-callers). Just...omg, so funny.

But the actual story line will probably break my heart. Unless, she's mean. Then maybe not...

Why does BSB always gets these jerky roles. Love him still, impending marriage and all. Hope he gets to shine here...sounds like meaty role. Yay to seeing his smoldering eyes for hours on tv...

Until now, Secret doesn't sound interesting at all. Maybe because I've watched Nice Guy, and other dramas in general so now this sounds dry and boring. The characters also sound boring, but I think I'm going to love Lee Dahee's. I want to know how thirsty she will be, I hope she can make it interesting.

I never knew Lee Da Hee before Voice, and I have been watching kdramas for years, so I think it's great she's been getting a lot of good attention. I loved her and her character in Voice, plus a second lead girl you can get behind is really not too many in kdramas.
