Hong Soo-hyun gets her leading men

Hong Soo-hyun’s new weekend family drama Will You Love And Give It Away has cast her love interests. She’ll be reuniting with Jang Ok-jung co-star Lee Sang-yeob, who scored himself a leading role this time. Seo Ji-seok (High Kick 3) will be the other leg of the love triangle, but this is one second lead who might have a fair shot at getting the girl. Why, you ask? Because the leading man might end up being her new stepbrother. Yeah, they’re doing that. Groan.

The new weekender comes from the PD of Queen of Reversals and the writer of Ugly Mooncake and Just Be Like Today. It stars Park Geun-hyung (aka Halbae Number Three) and Cha Hwa-yeon (Hundred Year Inheritance, I Miss You) in a sweet twilight romance. He’s a retired prosecutor and a regular customer at the neighborhood restaurant that she runs, and the two fall in love and decide to Brady-Bunch their families together. So far, so cute.

Here’s where things get potentially dicey though. The heroine (Hong Soo-hyun) is Mom’s daughter, and her leading man (Lee Sang-yeob) is Dad’s son. A*&GGG$&#* WHY. We already had Love Rain. Why do we have to do it again? The show keeps being called heartwarming family fare though, so maybe it won’t go makjang on us? In any case, she’s a responsible bank employee while he’s a jobless loser, but he’s sincere when it comes to his feelings for her.

Seo Ji-seok, on the other hand, is the total opposite. He’s a restaurateur, a chef, AND a second-generation chaebol. Of course he is. He’s described as cheery and romantic, which basically means he’ll be Mr. Perfect. But maybe if Sincere Slacker ends up her brother, Mr. Perfect will actually get to sweep her away? One can only hope, because the alternative involves breaking some laws.

Will You Love And Give It Away premieres in September on MBC.

"Maybe they won't go makjang on us?" A family drama, on MBC... >.>
I like both actors but I have been burnt once too many by those family WE suckers recently (YTWLSS and ISYG). The best oppas of the world are not enough anymore to keep me onboard of a messy storyline. Once it's finished, call me back and if the ending is satisfying, then I will take the plunge.

Same here... I don't have the patience for another family drama after what LSS put me through. I might just watch it on fast forward when it ends airing IF the couple is worth it.

Yeah, this sounds like a skip-watch show. But I wanna watch it 'cause now that I have a newfound appreciation of Halbae #3, I'm keen to see him show off his romantic side in a drama. Plus, I like/love all the leads. If the story sucks, I guess it'll be an opportunity to continue honing my fast-forwarding skills.

Has anyone watched any of the writer's other dramas (Ugly Mooncake, Just Like Today, Definitely Neighbors, City of Glass, etc)? Based on his previous work, is this likely to evoke more awws or more ughs?

I saw about a dozen eps of City of Glass - there weren't more subs. Then I only read recaps. What I can say - the drama started very well and promising but turned out unbearable. So I am rather reluctant. The highlights were really cool, though...

Agreed. LSS, ISYG and even Goddess of M, are all kinds of bad.

ISYG has the most boring OTP I've sever seen. I FF thru their scenes. Sb said they aren't even sure which one is the OTP there. It deserves a special award either way!
GoM makes me wish the worst for NamSM's char. As she chooses to drop LSW to marry into the lion's den, she deserves whatever bad fortune comes her way.
We all know abt LSS.
These 3 cure me of watching another Weekend drama for a long time to come!

He gets No screen time now that they've sent him off all the way to Italy, All by himself!
I've NEVER FF on one half or both parts of the OTP before. 1st time--in ISYG.
In last night's ep, all they did was different ppl sat across from each other and talked! Yawn.

My biggest problem with ISYG was not the (lack of?) an OTP setup, but the youngest daughter setup. The mom lavished her with a good education, designer clothes, and basically treated her like a princess, all to setup what apparently is nothing more than a Trophy Wife. Yet she seems to have no skills, not even sure if she has a real job at all, no interests or career, is totally spineless, and is the pure definition of a wimpy pawn in the game. Her character has not progressed one iota from the start. Maybe ISYG seems better to me than to most others here because I tend to skip just about any scenes with her in them.

"..The show keeps being called heartwarming family fare though, so maybe it won’t go makjang on us?.."

Uhm, yeah.. good luck with that on a weekend drama. I think that YTBLSS and 100 Year Inheritance had the same description. And neither turned out to be heartwarming, family, of comedy.

I am not going to dive into this one - I made that mistake with YTBLSS. After 10 to 20 episodes, if it is getting good comments here I might pick it up, but not holding my breath.

I just have to clarify. Is it illegal or taboo in Korea to marry your step-siblings? Living in the US, where this is allowed, personally I don't think it is a big deal. I always get confused when I watch this in dramas and how everyone is angsting over it. Would really appreciate an answer on this. Thanks. =)

If korean are against cousins marrying each other or relatives marrying (be it from the bride side and the other side from the groom) imagine step-siblings, lol it is not legal even on my country.

Plus another thing I found reeeally weird:

If the oldest brother marries the yougest sister of family A, and the youngest brother wants to marry the oldest sister of the same family A, some korean are against it because the rank names would be confusing

WTF... can someone explain it for me? Is the ranks really that important??

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes, very important. As a Neo-Confucian society, Koreans need to know how to relate to one another. A person's identity is often predicated on a person's relationship to another. Even the language reflects that. Which is why you'll see Korean dramas talking about speaking in honorifics or dropping honorifics or clearing up how to address one another.

So, a middle sister would call her older sister's a different title than her younger sister's. Same goes for the men's side. So, what do you do when there is no clear line of reference? And it's not merely a function of language. There are entire set of responsibilities and expectations of differently ranked siblings and their spouses, by extension.

Hope this explanation is helpful.

In Indonesia it's taboo, When your father marry a woman, that woman is your mother n her son/daughter is your sibling, n marriage between sibling even they don't have blood related is taboo
I guess there's no law about it(at least i never heard) but in society it's really taboo, it's like unwritten rule

Agree with eny. I also live in Indonesia. In some culture, it is even prohibited to marry your cousin. A too closely bloodrelated will produce disabled children, they say.

Required fields are marked *

Well there IS a higher chance to have children with disabilities when the parents are bloodrelated, but only to a certain degree. I don't think there's a problem with cousins, though. I've always thought that was the main reason as to why incest is illegal.

Marrying your stepsister/stepbrother or even your cousin is perfectly legal in my country. As long as the stepsister/-brother doesn't get fully legally adopted by their new parent, that is.
Same goes for most inlaws...

actually, I learned about this in school but there's research that children won't be affected genetically. In Bedouin families (located in western Egypt desserts) women marry their cousins (father's brother's son) and their children are not affected in the way their saying and because of that their kinship is secure and closer;)

Whatever research you read about not being affected I suggest is totally wrong. The bad effects of inbreeding have been known for at least 3,000 years. It was also somewhat responsible for the fall of the Roman Empire, and to the fall of the Hapsburg dynasty in Spain.

But the real danger is not the occasional marriage of cousins and such, it is when the inbreeding continues down the line. Some research has shown that the bad effects multiply significantly with each inbred generation, almost exponentially. Some rat experiment a few years ago showed that by the 6th generation of inbreeding, the rat "dynasty" was essentially dead.

According to one site (accuracy not verified), the bad effects for first generation cousins is pretty small - only about 10% higher than random pairings, or under 1/5000 chance. But by the 4th generation the chance goes up to almost 1/15.

I did not do any extensive research on this, was just curious, but pretty much everyplace agrees that in general inbreeding in humans is not a good thing.

Its illegal.

I dunno about stepsiblings but in my family i've got two aunties who are married to brothers from the same family, and in cross orders to (older sis-younger bro, younger sis-older bro). We're fine with it, and we're a chinese-indonesian family which more or less hails from similar confucian tradition as the koreans. Could it be that kdramas just like to complicate uncomplicated things??

0

Required fields are marked *

I was wondering the same thing.
Especially because they're already adults when they meet, so I really can't see the problem.
I always think it's a LOT weirder when people grow up together like siblings and then suddenly fall for each other, even when they`re not really related...

0

Required fields are marked *

Good question. In nearly all societies, the taboo is against marrying blood relatives, because of all the bad things that can happen with inbreeding genetically.

But on the other hand, in the US Woody Allen married his adopted daughter - something that I would expect only in k-drama.

I think taboo is such a string word. It's definitely frowned upon -heck, anger and rage would be raised- but I wouldn't call it taboo, nor illegal. (now someone correct me if I'm wrong on this...) as long as the couple arent in the same family registry (the dad adopting the stepchild), then it'd be perfectly legal for them to marry. But of course, their society frowns upon it.

I'm curious how this drama will handle this!

Ok, I'm not trying to be a sicko, but when older people marry and their children (and older ones, at that) become siblings, I could see how romances might develop. And I just don't find myself squicking at that. If they were children who came together at a young age and grew up together, that's a different story, but teenagers or adults, meh.

It's ok. Think me a sicko. I'll live. ~

0

Required fields are marked *

I don't see how that's sick. I think it's even acceptable for younger kids - childhood friends fall in love as well and that's regarded as completely normal D:. And even if two kids meet eachother because they suddenly become a family, they /know/ they're not actually related.

0

Required fields are marked *

Yes, it make sense that they could love each other because they know that they are not blood relative. That doesn't make sense is when they grow up together as sibling they know they blood relatif but suddenly they know that they are not blood relative n then they fall in love, just like in "Autum Tale". I don't like this drama because of that

0

If they are already grown up and not legally or blood related brother and sister, why is it illegal? It just seems like a weird coincidence not against the law.

I asked a question about step-siblings marrying each other once because I was confused about it and it does happen apparently (here in the US at least). I can see how it would be weird since technically you're one big family now, but on the other hand you aren't blood-related...it's just one of those situations that makes things complicated. And we all know how dramas make complicated matters even MORE complicated, lol.

But, awww Seo Ji Seok! I've been waiting for him to get back in a drama for a while. He usually gets the girl, so I guess if he doesn't get the girl this one time it won't be so heart-breaking but...he's a cheery/romantic chef, though? *sobbing*

It's not that I mind the step sibling love line, but I guess the way I was raised is that no matter what other calls your "step family" they are family first. There is no
'step' or 'half'. You treat and call them the same way as you would call "blood siblings" and that's why I'm a a little like...mehhh.

My favorite thing about this convo is that there are a lot of related anthropology topics, like the discussion of kinship and such and I am a sucker for such conversations!
