Kim So-eun takes the lead in drama-toon project

There’s an experimental format in town, and it’s what producers are calling a “drama-toon,” as we’ll see in a new project starring Kim So-eun (Horse Healer, Happy Endings, Boys Before Flowers) titled After School Bokbulbok. (Bokbulbok is a familiar term for those who’ve seen 1 Night 2 Days, which popularized the game. The term means literally Luck, No Luck and thus refers to games of chance.)

“Drama-toon” is a new term that isn’t associated yet with a particular project, so we can’t just point to one as an example; let’s unpack this bit by bit. The project is a drama, but not in the traditional television broadcast sense; it’ll be distributed via online and mobile portals. Tonally, the drama’s emphasis is on a “fun and entertaining topic” with a “fresh new format that calls to mind reading a webtoon or manhwa.” So it’s both playing with content delivery and actual content; the descriptor of manhwa-like visuals makes me think of the stylized interstitial sequences in Monstar that did a similar thing.

After Shool Bokbulbok will be a high school story centering around Kim So-eun (which is also her character’s name), a timid girl with an ordinary life who gets invited to a school club, after which point she begins to encounter “fantastical and extraordinary events.” Each episode contains particular “missions” that have to be carried out, and in the process So-eun comes out of her shell and draws out her bright, lively personality.

Kim explained her first impression to the project: “When I first read the script, it was so new and different that I thought to myself, ‘What kind of drama IS this?’ Every episode has missions that exceeded my imagination, and the process of completing those missions is fresh and fun. This is the first time I’m acting in a drama and character in this kind of genre, and it’s a lot of fun. I think it’ll be an extremely unconventional drama.”

After Shool Bokbulbok is a joint production between entertainment agency Fantagio (which represents Kim So-eun), production company Group Eight (which likes its manhwa adaptations, such as Boys Before Flowers and Tamra the Island), and director Jung Jung-hwa (who did tvN’s Flower Boy Next Door and Flower Boy Ramyun Shop). It will begin its run in early September, and will be available on all of SK’s channels like Nate, Hoppin, TV STore, and BTV. I don’t know if or how it’ll be available to people who live outside of Korea, but I have to think they’ll be made available somehow. I hope it will, at least, because I’m all for genre and format experimentation, and this sounds like a refreshing, whimsical idea.

Kim So Eun <3 How I love that girl hehe

I'm so glad she's finally getting proper lead roles in dramas! Think i heard before (maybe here?) that she's also starring opposite KHJ in another drama? Yayyyy BOF reunion hehe

lol but i DO wish someone would cast her opposite Bummie again xD

Another drama with Bummie please!!! I'm really enthralled with their chemistry and even if it's been eons since BOF, there's just something about this couple that makes them unforgettable. :P

It's kind of astonishing when you think about it, they were the third leads (not even the second leads, that was Kim Hyun-joong and Lee Min-jung) and stole all the couple thunder.

They're the ONE part of BOF the writers did right, which is amazing because in every other version of that story they're terrible, and terrible together.

Seriously, they were the saving grace of the show. I think most of us followed the series just for these two. :) I don't know if it's just me, but I think nothing can ever surpass this couple. They might be paired with other actors, yet the chemistry isn't as intense as the one they shared. Imagine if they get paired again now that they have matured. The chemistry will be explosive!

oh I think they're great with whoever they're paired with - Kim So Eun was adorable with Yoo Ah-in in He Who Can't Marry and Bummie had lovely chemistry with Jung Eun-ji in That Winter The Wind Blows and now with Moon Geun-young in Goddess of Fire (which is a terrible drama with terrible dialogue, but him+MGY are the best part of it).

But I won't lie, I would love to see SoEul paired again, as first leads this time (you know what that means, right?! KISSING!!!)

0

@pogo Oh I'm all in for those hot kissing scenes! They left us hanging with the kiss that never happened in BOF. At least they're both mature now to hold their own love scenes (lol). :D

SoEul is the only reason I would even contemplate watching BOF again. But sadly, I just can't stand GHS and KJH's faces (and terrible acting) there.

IS THERE ANYONE THERE WHO HAS DISTILLED ONLY THE SOEUL PARTS? Gah, I so want to watch them again.

0

@Ilog I think you can find a compilation of SoEul scenes on youtube. :)

0

@ Ilog .. I watched that drama ONLY for the SEOUL couple. Well.. a lil bit for Lee Min Ho and the other boys
( except KHJ) . Its funny cos this was only my second kdrama that I started because of KHJ after liking him in Playful kiss( My first!!) and ended up completely fast forwarding his scenes.
Yeah there is a compilation of SEOUL couple scenes in youtube.. I was hungover on it for quite a while and the samsung anycall bodyguard CF that they did together. I'll link the video for bringing me the nostalgias... ;)

Definitely! I'm pretty KB will finally land into male lead territory once Goddess of Fire wraps up. The thing is, he's planning on serving his term in the military soon so it may take a while before this much-anticipated reunion can materialize.

It's such a pleasure to meet fellow SoEul shippers here. It only proves that our ship is still sailing even after four years. :)

I like her. Lovable personality but not a strong young actress around (not yet). But she got potential.

Read news about her will takes the female lead alongside Kim Hyung Joong for KBS new period drama? I dunno if we can confirm this or not.

Remember seeing her in KBS period drama (set in the 1960 (can remember) few years ago, she's in her teen and I think period drama and sageuk suits her well.

Yay. Finally Kim So Eun doing a trendy or teen drama! Thank heavens and drama Gods.. LOL. She such a promising talent but really underrated.

Heard she will star opposite to Kim Hyun Joong in Age of Feeling. I like her and she was really good in period dramas. She rocked her role in Empress Chunchu and she almost steal the spotlight with her adorable and charming character in Horse Healer. Age of Feeling sounds promising so I might give it a try. Although I'm wishing KHJ will backout and Jung Il Woo will overtake. :)))

its time for kim so eun to shine.. :)
thanks to her good portrayal of princess sukhwi that leads her to catch a leading role..
a true actress indeed.. hope this project will give her the popularity she deserve.. it will be such a waste of her talent if she continue to accept second lead role.. not that i dont want it but i think so eun has a potential to be a popular actress with a right project and a partner of his age...

more power to so eun and hope she achieve want she truly deserve..

I really like her! I also thought she'll join Kim Hyunjoong. I don't know why, but I was anticipating that couple x)

I know it's going to sound really dense of me, and I do apologize for bringing it up. Kim Soeun is a beautiful girl, but why, why, why did she get a nose job?? I can't really tell with that picture used, maybe it was an old pic. But when I see recent pictures of her... All my attention goes to her nose (Sometimes I don't even know its her). Society really needs to get a grip with their ideals of beauty. Poor girl.

Hi, dear...I think it's not necessary bringing her nose job or whatever we said. I mean, look at lee dae hee (no offense to her fans), she is not only did a nose job, but she did a plastic surgery for her whole face. But her acting is pretty good. But, ok...im not going to talk about PS, but lets discuss about her talent. I too, lil bit notice about her nose, but i think its just a normal thing...or she just did an injection, maybe. I like her too, really like her. I will support her for anything she do...:) kim so eun, fighting!

I like her too, and I'm glad she's finally first lead in something - she's a talented young actress and the best part of that mess Boys Before Flowers was her character. I would adore a Bummie reunion, but if she worked with Kim Hyun-joong, I'd love that too.

(and yeah, I actually did not recognise her from the pic at first - it's a shame the SK entertainment industry pushes young actresses to homogenise their faces so much, she was lovely and distinctive earlier and now her doctor has managed to make her a little less so)

That said, KHJ is a terrible actor but I'm hoping the presence of a more talented costar (So-eun here) might make him bearable, as it did in Playful Kiss.

So guys, has it been definitely stated somewhere that she had a nose job? Or is it just your own opinion?

Not being accusing just genuinely interested, hehe, cause I cant for the life of me tell a difference in past and present photos ^^"

That picture was just recent, I think. I know she have already pointy and perfect nose already. But I kinda noticed her nose too lately. There are some angles that her nose really looks.. different. There are no news or confirmation about it. But if she really did have it, i'm saddened. She looks so prefect already. I remembered that she's my first girl crush in kdrama. :) Well, true or not, I still like her. Atleast the girl can act and she's really charming and cute. One of the must-watch young actresses indeed.

I've never gotten off the SoEul ship even though that ship is lost at high sea somewhere... Dramagod need to steer that ship back to port soon! And if we have to wait another 4 years, so be it! They were the ONLY good thing in BOF, seriously!

I heart this young lady and I'm glad that she is finally getting a lead role. Loved her in her first sageuk performance as the young "Empress Chun Chu". I looked up her name and have been following her work ever since. I enjoyed her performance in "The Man Who Can't Get Married". I watched the ever so boring "Horse Healer" just for her. I must say she was the best thing in that show for me even though she had limited screen time. She is incredibly charming with charisma and great screen presence.
I would love to see her play the role in a sageuk.

Was first cognizant of KSE from stills of BoF (which I didn't watch) here on DB and thought she was cute enough, not particularly striking in any way.

Then I finally got to see her in action in "The Man/He Who Can't Marry" and finally got why KSE was getting so much attention.

The camera loves her and she simply has one of the most adorable looks when she is glancing upwards w/ her eyes (which really glisten).

KSE is also one of the better young actresses who should continue to improve as she gains experience and expands her range.

She was great in "Empress Chun Chu"; after the show switched to the adult Chun Chu, pretty much lost interest.

I've been waiting for this actress to be in a drama that I care to watch. Here's hoping this dramatoon thing turns out to be interesting. And if the rumors turn out to be true and she is cast in Age of Feeling I might have to move my interest level up a notch. I like Kim Hyun Joong well enough but the drama itself is just a maybe, at best, for me.

Oh, yay! It's nice seeing Kim SoEun again, especially in a project that sounds so interesting and different. I really hope it will be made available to those outside of Korea (with subs) because I'd certainly give it a try. I like it when people play with traditional formats, especially if they try to go for a more dynamic, comic-like feel. I hope she keeps taking on more interesting projects as time goes by. She seems like a great girl.

Watched this adorable little show tonight. The short length helps with breezy quality and also to overlook some of the choppy acting. The main two of 5urprise were not bad and could develop into decent actors but the rest of the guys need to work on it more. The cameos by the established actors were fun. Kim Eun Soo did well.
