Name That Drama: Swans, birthmarks, radio shows

Time for another installment of Name That Drama! Flex your drama trivia muscles with this round of half-forgotten plots of birth secrets, jealous exes, and meddling evildoers. If you’ve got a drama question, you could either ask in the comments section for other readers to answer, or email in your question to be featured in an upcoming Name That Drama.

  1. Jackie asks about an animated show:

I actually had a question about a Korean animation/children’s show that I could not remember the name of. It was a children’s show about ballet and Swan Lake. I am not sure what the exact plot is, but all I could remember is that the main character was a girl who was a ballerina and wore a ballet outfit that resembled a swan. There was also a guy who was her friend but he was possessed by some evil lady. So, he would turn into a black swan or raven and try to harm her. I really want to find the name of the show because I remember the plot as well the ballet music was really beautiful.

  2. CFLH asks:

I’ve been trying to figure out the title of this drama I watched waaay back in high school. It was shown on Arirang here in our country. Every time I try to google this drama I don’t exactly find what I’m looking for.

What I do remember is that the opening credits shows the female lead riding a bike. The story was about two sisters who were well off, and the younger sister (who I guess is the lead) falls for this guy who was poor and her mother was against it, and the older sister marries a guy who she thinks is rich but was somewhat conning her. And the older sister has a miscarriage. That’s all I remember.

  3. Ha, I sure hope it’s a real drama Cfuddpucker is thinking of and not just a figment of imagination, since we can only help in one of those scenarios:

I have recollections of a plot but I’m not sure if I dreamed it or if it was a real drama… Two girls, A and B, are friends. A is an orphan and B lives with a single mom. B dies in an accident while being pursued by a gang. She had been the daughter of a wealthy man and to claim the birthright, the mom has girl A pose as her daughter, even tattooing a birthmark on her. The ploy eventually falls apart.
Thanks in advance, I love this feature!

  4. KimYoonmi asks:

I was talking to someone who didn’t remember a really old movie which they assumed was Korean (but I’m not so sure)…

Of course they remembered the ending (but not the middle)…. so since I didn’t watch it, but I kinda want to know what it is, I’m hoping a second hand telling won’t hurt in figuring out what the movie is.

The plot according to this person was that there is this guy under a lot of stress and who was suicidal. The movie ends with him killing all of his family and then himself.

Personally, I found this odd… so I’d like to find it. Must have been subtitled a while back?

  5. Maybe you have the answer for this drama requested by HI:

There’s a close knit family. The dad owns a little shop, and the oldest girl works as a radio producer and for ratings hires a ‘celebrity’ that is blacklisted because he went through a very public nasty divorce and let his ex look like a saint so he could keep the kids. He and the sister start dating and it makes the ex-wife very jealous. A brother, studying to be a dentist or doctor, went on vacation and got a girl pregnant and the country girl followed him, but he rejects her and keeps her a secret because he is trying to get another (rich) girl to go out with him, and then gets engaged to the rich girl. I don’t remember what else happens to the pregnant girl and then there is another brother but I forget what he does.

And the family has a secret past? Like the mom abandoned them for some reason and the dad has a lot of guilt and a memory of playing the saxophone or clarinet with another guy who he might have accidentally gotten killed. And that dead guy could be related to the radio guy. They replay the saxophone memory scene a lot if that helps.

Thank you! Sorry for the fuzzy details.

Defintely 'Bachelor's Vegetable Store.' VERY loosely based on a true story of a young man who turned a truck veggie selling business into a multi-million dollar chain. If they had stuck to that storyline alone, I'm sure more people would have enjoyed it. *big heavy sigh*

I recapped BVS over on Soompi. And it wasn't THAT bad a show that everyone makes it out to be... The Six-Pack of Hot Guys! The Veggie Oil and Halo of Light conversations! But I'm definitely over-biased. :P

Princess Tutu was my first guess too... But I was confused because the Raven was the antagonist there. If I remember correctly it was a story about a Prince who had his heart broken into a million pieces. Tutu tries to gather all the shards and there is a story behind each shard. Tutu's rival is the black Swan/ Princess Rue who also wants the Prince. And I also remember that the events of the anime were actually a story coming to life... being written by a story-writing machine that could'nt be stopped so the characters had no way but to enact the story as it unfolded. I was quite captivated with the anime(one of my favourites!) I used to rush home from school to catch it. ;)

I fast-forwarded through it as well. Liked the main couple, hated the plot with the naive pregnant country girl. Couldn't stand the character and how she clung to the dentist despite him falling in love with another girl. Although it did teach me the kdrama rule that a guy always stays with, marries or goes back to the mother of his child regardless of how he truly feels about her.

1 Princess tutu!

Can anyone help with this animated movie? i saw only the start of the movie (like 15 minutes) when i was in 3rd grade and was whisked away for some class duties. it's prob korean/japanese and is pretty famous (i would think so - why else would it be screened in school).

all i remember is this kid emo-ing at the start and then the family was pigging out and looking extremely gluttony at this stall, eating lots of chicken. especially dad, he was obese and plucking the chicken wing with much vigor.

Is that Spirited Away by chance? I think I remember her parents doing that and then turning into pigs. . .

0

Required fields are marked *

That sounds a lot like the beginning of Miyazaki's Spirited Away, where the girl was emo because her family was moving and they come to a place where the spirits live and her family literally pigs out on the spirit food. I won't say what happens next as I don't want to ruin it if you haven't seen the entire movie, but yeah I would def recommend finishing it, it's a blast.

I'm a little fuzzy on the details because it's a pretty old drama I watched maybe around 2002-2006. It's about a man and a woman that fall in love. He plays the guitar, and she is a singer. He gets betrayed by a friend (I think) and ends up getting shot because I think he takes a bullet for his friend. He ends up in the hospital while she has a singing performance, but he wants to go see it, so he leaves and watches it, dying after it. At the end, you hear someone playing their song on the guitar, and it turns out that it's their son.

i’m not 100% sure if this is a korean drama, but i think it is. the female lead is a nurse and she has a dream that something gets caught on fire. she tells her mom about it and her mom says that it means she’s going to get married soon and tries to convince the female lead to sell the dream to her older sister. the male lead is a doctor, and i think his mother looks down on the female lead for being a nurse and preferred the secondary female lead, who’s a doctor. on the side, we have the male lead’s younger brother pursuing the female lead’s older sister. and that’s all i can remember. thanks in advance

I've got a period Chinese movie? Drama? That I need help identifying please. I probably saw this in the mid to late 90's?
It's about these two girls who lookalike but are not sisters and were born during the same moon or something. One is found abandoned in a cart by a lady whose family was getting murdered, while the other is born rich. The one found is raised learning Kung fu and etc. while the other is raised pampered.
The lady is seeking revenge.
One day the girls see each other because the found girl is impersonating someone in a fashion show while the rich girl is in the fashion show. A fight or ambush or something breaks out and people think one is the other.
The eventually get close like sisters.
There was something involving a kite and handkerchief and horse, maybe poison/medicine? The rich one has a boyfriend. There's something with exchanging of red beans with the rich girl and her boyfriend.
The rich girl dies in the end because people thought she was the found girl.
And the lady eventually gets revenge on the people that killed her family.
Thanks to anyone who can identify this. :)

Could number 4 be Kurosagi (black swindler)?

It's a japanese film about a guy taking revenge on white and red swindlers. The movie is based on the manga with the same title.

The story starts with the father getting conned out of all his money, he gets depressed and kills his wife and kids before committing suicide. The only survivor is the son who then goes on to avenge his family. This is only revealed near the end of the film.

This is actually what I thought of too. It doesn't quite fit, but it does have the 'dad kills his family and then himself' bit. If I remember correctly its a drama with a movie as the sequel. Also it has Yamashita Tomohisa in it, which is always a plus. :)

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I got the impression that it's a movie and it's older than that. The only detail she gave me was that it was a movie. And everyone was killed at the end. =P

The plot roughly is that the Dad lost his job, turned suicidal, killed his entire family, then killed himself. No survivors, the movie ends.

Not a drama. She thought it was Korean, but it sounds like it could be Japanese too... (Japanese like doing the artsy psychological thing a lot in terms of range...)

I mostly want to view the movie for myself 'cause I want to dissect the cultural bits.

This is a Japanese animation that I watched years ago, I think I checked it out at a public library. It left a deep impression, I remembered crying while watching so I really want to find it again and rewatch it. The story was futuristic, with a robot or perhaps a mechanical scarecrow on a journey to find his heart. I think he met a girl and fell in love, and in the end he got his heart or something like that...I have tried searching for it from the description above but wasn't able to find anything so I thought that maybe someone here can help me. Love this segment by the way.

That sounds like a heart warming story, I tried to look it up. I tried looking up Tin man adaptations from the Wizard of Oz, no luck. But I wish you all the best.
I saw the first episode of Tree with Deep Roots and looked for the show for years and finally found it this year. I hate the story from what I saw the recap of the last episode but I was relieved to find it after 2 years.
God willing it will take less time for you to find yours. Amen!

Well, in Howl's Moving Castle (Studio Ghibli) you get a scarecrow that fell in love and eventually gets his heart (and human body) back BUT he's a very minor part of the story, so I'm not sure that that is the film you're talking about.

I have seen Howl's Moving Castle twice so I'm sure it's not what I'm looking for but I think the memories of the scarecrow might be influenced from Howl's. Sorry my memory is really fuzzy but for sure it's Japanese animation movie. Thank you guys for trying:)

It might be A Tree of Palme (or Palme no Ki). It's about a puppet/wooden robot that's on a journey to bring the Egg of Touto to Soma, a tree considered by many to be the god of this world. Palme wants to exchange the Egg for a heart so he can become human.

During the journey he meets a girl named Popo (with whom he falls in love with) and a gang of children that join him on his journey.

The movie is a loose sci-fi adaptation of Pinocchio.

I haven't seen the movie myself (yet). But it fits all the criteria you listed, so hopefully I'm right and you don't have to search for two years like Timbone did. Good luck!

And that makes me remember this old movie... I think it was a Chinese movie... whose name I don't remember. I watched it when I was a kid but never forgot it because of this scene:

It had a sort of love quadrangle where the two pairs seemed to be on opposite sides of a feud. And anyway, the two girls fight (martial arts duel), and one of the guys cuts off their heads and exchanges them through magic, so that he keeps the body of his partner with the other girl's head, and lets the body of the other girl with his partner's head go back to the other guy. So of course the other guy doesn't recognize his sweetheart because she has a different face, but it's still her same heart. And meanwhile the other guy gloats because he's still got his partner's heart, and the other girl's brains, because apparently the other girl was supposed to be smarter and cooler-headed. I think one of the girls was named Kagaribi or something like that.

That is hilarious haha. I think I would watch that.
I am recently getting bored of anything I watch this days, I must be getting old at 23, I feel like a 40 year old man. Summer Nude the Jap show is the only show with a lot of heart that I am really enjoying right now.

I heard a song from a show I saw recently but I cant figure out from which show
It goes something like

saranghae ..you were mine.. (and then the song gets a little fast I think) you here in my life and...

Oh well I wish I can piece it together

I think it was from Marrying a Millionaire or I hear your voice

but I cant be sure

That's a japanese movie from the 80's with Hiroyuki Sanada. Not so sure about the title, but I think it was "Ninja wars".

I've got a Chinese drama I've been trying to find.

It's got Boy A and Girl A in love, but Boy A's family is rich and Girl A is poor so they separate the two and force Boy A to marry socially acceptable Girl B. Girl A is secretly already pregnant, so she delivers the baby herself and raises him. Years later, Girl B is barren so they have problems with the succession, they see and recognize Girl A and her son somewhere and they realize he's Boy A's son, so they take him from Girl A. Uumm. Fast forward and I think Girl A is already old and in a facility, which the son happens to go to for a business matter. He sees Girl A hugging a stuffed panda doll and treating it like her son and something triggers in him and he recognizes her, happy ending! Although I can't remember what happened to Boy A in all this...

Well, if anyone can identify this, thanks in advance!

It's not a drama, it's a movie. The movie is called "My Beloved" or "Ma ma zai ai wo yi ci". A tearjerker movie. I remembered watching it like fifteen years ago and cried one littre of tears...

I am highly recommend this movie. And don't forget to watch it with a box of tissue beside you ^^

Hello everyone.. Its a been a while in DB... :) I have a chinese movie that I want to find. It was dubbed into English and aired in PIX in my country. I remember the genre being mystical. And it had this girl who was very ugly. ( I think it was because of a curse that she literally had protruding teeth and was like a beggar). And then she follows around a guy who's like a monk(I think...) He has a staff and fights with it. And they come across a group of gypsies, one of whom performs some kind of erotic dance and there was a joke about how smelly the gypsy girl was... There were scenes were the boy had memories of this ugly girl only..she was pretty and kindof futuristic ( the costumes I mean, shiny pants and stuff) and came out of a cocoon!! The boy doesn't recognise the ugly girl though. At the end, the girl becomes pretty again and flies away. I think she fights Gods... And that's about it that I remember. Sorry that its all so hazy. And Thank you!! :)

You are most welcome. I have not seen that movie but maybe because of you I will. I have become recently disillusioned with wuxia. Being a dude I am not a fan of flower boys lol. I really dont like Wallace Huo lol

I have seen pretty much all the good adaptations of Jin Yong's books so I am sorta screwed the other authors love tragic endings or dont have their series subbed lol

I have this REALLY old Hongkong period movie that has been on and off my mind for the longest time.

It's really old since I watched it when I was a toddler (which means it should be 20 to 23 years back) - about a scholar who falls in love with a ghost (I'm not sure whether she resides in a plantation or a particular tree - having flashbacks to banana trees). I can't remember much of the plot but I do remember them having a physical encounter of sorts towards the end of the film (maybe the ghost possessed someone?). Not a scary movie though, more of a melo romantic sort of movie.

Sorry for the lack of the details - I think I was old enough to recall much of it.

Wait a minute, not sure whether the ghost fell for the scholar first or the scholar fell for the ghost first, lol. Either way, I remember the love was somewhat reciprocated.

Hi everyone, I really enjoy reading almost EVERYTHING here!! The recaps, reviews, news, everything and especially the name that drama part!! But it's my first comment so it'll be short.
It's about this korean drama I saw few years ago, just one or two episodes :( , it's about a boy who was in an orphanage with his sister after their parent's death i guess, the boy's relatives come to kindap him and take him to australia but they let the girl there i think she was adopted(not his real sister). Years after, he came back and tries to find her, he does. All I remember is that she works somewhere with fish or something and that her brother's fiancé is jealous and still say that they are complete strangers so why does he keep caring about her.
That's all I remember, I see that it was'nt so short :p, please help. Thank you

Hi hi! I could definitely be wrong since I'm going off of very wonky memory, but can your drama be One Fine Day with Gong Yoo? Some parts of your description, like the not-actual-siblings, working-in-an-aquariam and Australia parts fit in with the drama to a T... Hope this helps ^u^

I've got a Chinese drama I've been trying to find for years. The whole series was on television and was english subtitled. This was when I was in grade school, so it was at least 5-7 years ago.
Anyway the plot was centered on a love triangle between a girl and two completely different guys. There is the first guy that saves the girl while she is falling and he rides a motorcycle (now called motorcycle guy). The other guy is rich and works in his own company, and even hires the girl. The girl looks like she wants to design clothes and at one point is gazing at a hand drawn picture of a wedding dress.
At the end, there is a wedding between the girl and the rich guy. However, the girl realizes she loves the motorcycle guy and the rich guy lets her go. She runs down the street in her dress while at the same time, the motorcycle guy runs into the church to find her. The rich guy tells him the girl already left. The girl and the motorcycle guy eventually stop at a large water fountain, wondering where the other is. They are actually both on the other side of the fountain where they cannot see each other. As they circle the fountain, they find each other and kiss.
There is one last scene at the airport, where reporters are chasing a girl (a completely diff girl), and one of the main guys temporarily hides her. The End.
Thank you guys!

I think it might be Heaven's wedding gown, a Taiwanese drama. But I think in this drama the main girl end up with the rich guy tho.

Sounds like the 2004 Taiwanese drama Heaven's Wedding Gown (Le Robe de Mariage des Cieux), which I've always wanted to finish. The rich guy is played by Leon Jay Williams, the girl is Cyndi Wang, and motorcycle guy is Ming Dao of Prince Who Turned Into A Frog. Ming Dao's only the second lead though-- the lead guy is Leon Jay.

Reply to Maister's question on 25th July.

~quote~
I don’t post very often as much as I should (given my frequent visits here) but I have exhausted all possible resources. The drama I’ve been looking for is an early 2000 to mid 2000 drama. I’m positive the main actress is Choi Ji Woo, but my memory is fuzzy. What I do remember is it revolved around the designing of shoes. The main actress was friends with the female antagonist. The female antagonist was driving while arguing (I’m not quite sure what but I remember she was clearly distracted) with the main actress and hit the main male actor. The main actress got out of the car and tried to save the main actor, the antagonist female was to shocked to do anything but runaway. The antagonist female was wearing a red/pink dress during this whole hit and run incident.
Later, the male lead turns out to own a shoe designing company and the antagonist female tries to be the main female who saved his life by wearing her red/pink dress while walking by him.
I hope someone could help me find this drama, I clearly remember having a crush on the male actor. I think he might have even been my first celebrity crush.
Anyways, thanks in advance to those who tried!

Drama is Tomato (1999).
Lead actress is Kim Hee Sun.

Hi,
I'm also an infrequent poster though I very much enjoy reading the posts and comments. I've tried looking everywhere but the name of the drama I'm looking for just slips my mind. I really hope I can get help here though. (I'm very sorry I'm not even certain if it's Japanese/Korean/something else)

I'm looking for a drama/movie in which I can unfortunately remember only one scene:
2 guys are having a meal (?ramen/oden) at the bar of a restaurant when they see a waitress being harassed by a guest/boss. One of the guys flicks a piece of food at the assailant which enrages him and the rest of his ?gang. There ends up being a 2 vs gang fight and while the 2 are winning, they eventually have to escape in their ?truck.

Haha sorry, sounds really obscure I know. Just hoping it might trigger someone's memory. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

There's this Chinese period drama that I remember watching when I was younger, but I don't know the name. I remember the plot as of a girl, when she was born, her mother couldn't keep her so she imprinted a flower mark onto her shoulder and let her drift in a river. She was adopted and later on her dad was killed and she meets a guy and so on. If you can tell me the title then that would be so helpful.
