Go Soo and Park Shin-hye courted for historical film

There’s a new sageuk in the works that’s gaining some attention even in its early stages of pre-production for a number of reasons: it’s the latest film being produced by Bidangil, or Silk Road Pictures, of A Werewolf Boy and The Chaser (the terrifying Ha Jung-woo movie, not the drama), and it’s courting Go Soo (Empire of Gold), Park Shin-hye (Heirs), and Han Seok-kyu (Paparotti) to star.

The project technically doesn’t even have a title yet, but it’s going by the equivalent of Tailor or Dressmaker, and it’s a Joseon-era story about the artisans who make the king’s clothes. They’re geeeeenius craftsmen who specifically only make the royal family’s clothing, and it’ll be the story of one master artisan and a young upstart who challenges him. I have to say, I was all enthused about the casting and then the clothing craftsmen premise conjured up images of Jang Ok-jung crossed with Goddess of Fire and I was bored to tears just imagining it. I sincerely hope there’s a better angle this time around.

The actors are still being wooed, but Go Soo is up to star as the genius tailor who has a natural gift for his craft but enjoys his freedom. He plays against the rules to make the king and queen’s clothes when it’s above his pay grade. Han Seok-kyu’s role is the established master, who’s made the royal family’s robes since the last king’s reign. He’s been the best up until now, but he’ll be threatened by Go Soo’s geeeenius in a classic Mozart-Salieri rivalry.

Park Shin-hye is up for the queen’s role, a character described as hiding her vast loneliness caused by the king’s cold temperament. She values artistry, which sounds like the perfect setup for an affair with a hot artist. Just sayin’. Directing is the PD of Men: An Operating Manual, and once the film locks in a cast, it plans to start shooting next spring.

Speaking of clothes ... Does anyone else think Go Soo's pose looks really "feminine" in that picture? It's a pose I see female models in all the time for magazine shoots. The juxtaposition is so jarring - Go Soo's handsome masculine face, and then that feminine pose coupled with his long, slender fingers (that, yes, look like a woman's).

Right? Child kings marrying child queens, old kings marrying teenage queens, it all happened in real life. Too bad history doesn't exactly pay deference to our modern inhibitions...

And Park Shin Hye is 23 years old now, not some child actress being matched up with a grown man.

Yeah, I think queens were generally young back in those times. Maybe 13 and up?

Required fields are marked *

Out of curiosity, what would you consider the minimum age requirement to be a queen? My recollection is that, in most cultures, late teens is common and occasional some poor child gets roped into marriage when she's still learning to read and speak in complete sentences.

Back in the day (all over the world), once a girl hits puberty, she was ready to be married off (if not before).

0

Well, in reality, back in the days, girls get married when they are 12 or 13...so...she's quite "old" to be a queen if she were to belong in that era.

For me, it's not that she is too old or too young, but that I am sick of her. I'm ready for drama-land to get out of its rut; it's either some idol whose the nation's sweetheart or whatever, or its MGY or PSH. Is that talent pool really that small?

That's why no matter how much they hoped, i don't think they will ever be heard. only maybe if park shin hye retires.

Park Shin-hye please take it and don't go back to fluffy dramas. I am begging you. Han Seok-kyu would be a great mentor just like Ryoo Seung-Ryong in Miracle Cell #7.
Han Seok-kyu is one hell of an actor. I hope he is not playing 2nd fiddle to Go Soo.

Since this is a film made by competent people and the possibility of casting an amazing actor I will definitely watch it.

0

Shinhye has been pretty good portraying the roles that were asked of her. It would be fair to say that she should be judged according to that along with the scope of the role, her age and experience at the time.
It's fine if even after watching her in different projects one still arrives at the same opinion about her abilities. It's also acceptable to read critical comments. After all we are individuals with different perceptions.
The only issue I have is the degrading terms and attacks by some on the character of a person one has not even met. I fail to understand what is being achieved from that.

0

You don't. I've seen some of her dramas, and I've yet to be impressed by her. Her characters are all the same to me, nothing different. I will try and finish heirs, she's doing good in there. Although I'm stuck at ep 3, just waiting for more to come out so I can marathon it, because I find I lose interest pretty quick if I'm not hooked.

0

same characters? i don't think so. i've seen her in melo drama when she was a child actress, then playing romcom/trendy/popular dramas . and she's playing different characters in movies.

perhaps some people new in korean drama world used to see her in popular candy dramas, but she's not just playing same character, she even played villain before.

i hope shin hye will accept this movie, i would love her to play as a queen.

0

I'm not a fan yet. She has been in the industry for a long time with many opportunities to grow. This will be more of an adult role for her and I hope she'll go that route. She can do more but she has been picking comfortable and familiar roles and its getting really boring.

0

I suggest you try to watch her old drama Tree of Heaven . I use to not care so much for her but when I finished the drama, I became a fan. Well I guess I'm too old to be called a fan lets say I liked her then.

Shinhye was barely seventeen when that movie was released so she must have been 16 when it was filmed. There was an age difference between her and Jae Hee too? The plot did not focus on romance basically being a horror movie.
A year before in 2006, two dramas starring her are worth watching......Seoul 1945 and Tree Of Heaven. They showed well her potential as an actress at just 16 yrs.

Omg, her talent is not mediocre. It's true that she has played similar roles in a few dramas . However in FBND she has proved to be a good actress. Besides, she has been praised for her acting in that movie whose name i can't remember. Plus in Heirs she is acting a kind of role she has never taken before, and she is not pouting or doing faces, which were bad points frequently mentioned by the people who didn't like her.

As for singing, I do think she is not good at all, she could improve though. So regarding that , you could be harsh on her, cause she isn't doing her best.

What I'm saying is that calling someone mediocre when we are just merely viewers is too much. There are producers out there, experts who call her even when her dramas haven't had good ratings and that must have a reason. She is a talented young actress and she has a wonderful way to go.

Shinhye seems to pick different roles for movies from the ones in the drama. It does not matter the screen time or if it's not a main one. It has to appeal to her or be a challenging one. I, for one am all for it specially because of the people she will be working with in a genre she has never really acted in. It's bound to be a good learning experience

She will look beautiful in the dresses of the queen made by the genius tailor since she has a flair of carrying anything with style.

As far as suitability of the role is concerned.......the producers must find her suitable in the role that they know about well. Surely, their judgement must have precedence over others since they are putting up the finances and have to look at the marketability and success of the film from all aspects.
