With the two leads secured for KBS’s Pretty Man—that would be Jang Geun-seok and Lee Jang-woo—the drama is now in talks to get Han Chae-young (Ad Genius Lee Tae-baek, A Man Called God) onboard as one of the leading ladies, though it’s not the main heroine role which is yet uncast.
Which makes sense, since the heroine is essentially named Averagina (Bo-tong-ie) while the character Han Chae-young is up for is described as “goddess-like”; Han is pretty much a spot-on casting choice for that description given her polished, glamorous image. She’ll pretty much be the opposite of the heroine, though it’s not like we didn’t assume that anyway. K-dramas, how you love your opposites. (I don’t actually think her acting suits goddess roles best—she’s better playing plucky characters, but unfortunately has been typecast by her looks, I think. There’s something very awkward about her that doesn’t translate into smooth elegance.)
The pretty man of the title refers to Jang Geun-seok (though I’m pretty sure everybody’s going to be pretty in this show), who plays a lady-killer who steals hearts left and right. But it’s through the heroine Bo-tong-ie that he comes to realize that love trumps everything else, including money, reputation, and power. The drama is based on a popular manhwa and will be written by the scriptwriter of The Gift of Room 7, Spy, and No Breathing. Directing is PD Kim Young-jo of Cinderella’s Sister.
It would be a rather swift return to work for Han Chae-young, given that she gave birth to her first child (a son) in August, but dramaland rests for nobody. Pretty Man will follow the currently airing Secret and will be KBS’s next Wednesday-Thursday drama beginning in November.
