Name That Drama: Street fighting and war buddies

Time to scour your brains for more drama recall! Here we go…

  1. I feel like I should know the answer to Lindsay’s question, but it’s eluding me…

I can’t remember if this was a movie or a super short mini drama but it was about a boy who spent his night out on the streets to avoid his father. At first he fights to be left alone but he soon get the attention of local gangs and even has a street name. At the same time a man working as a bartender sees him and sees himself back in the day and mentors the boy. The boy starts fighting less for survival and more to get to the top. His friends were a small bit of comic relief but it’s mostly a dark movie.

Note: The boy had a really cute face, not a fighter face to me. He liked his mentor’s niece? He or one of his friends may have been or be in a Kpop group. It’s fairly recent, last 5-7 years maybe?

Please help with a cherry on top!!!

  2. holly asks:

Hoping for your help in trying to remember a drama. I watched this recently and I think it is pretty recent drama. It is either Korean or Taiwanese.

I remember the main female character going on vacation and meeting the main male character. A memorable scene was where they had to dance in a competition to win a prize. The prize is a signed CD. In the end, only the main guy and girl are left. And they have to dance in a hula hoop. It looks like the girl wins but then the guy lifts her out of the hula hoop and wins.

Does anyone know which drama this is?

  3. ShenaBeana’s question:

I have a horror movie I watched in about 2002-2006ish about a girl who moves into an apartment building that’s haunted (of course) all I really remember is the residents have a curfew and if you don’t make it on to the property on time you die (surprise).

There’s one scene where this couple is super poor and they show them getting ready to have dinner and they cut their wrists and drink each other’s blood, but they’re not vampires (unfortunately).

  4. Christine remembers a number of details, which should help:

Thank you so much for taking requests like this. I saw bits of the drama (possibly movie, but I’m pretty sure drama) I’m looking for while my parents watched it in the late 90’s/early 2000’s. I was only about 10 at the time so I don’t remember much, but I do remember:

    – It was set during the Korean War.

    – The main guy ends up serving along with some friends.

    – While the main guy is alone on patrol in a forest, he comes across a North Korean soldier. Both of them have their guns pointed at each other, but then realize that they’re old friends. So they happily put their guns down and walk along a beach catching up. But far off in the distance, the main guy’s friends see what looks like a North Korean soldier holding their friend at gun point, so one of them shoots the North Korean soldier.

    – I hope I’m not mixing dramas up but I believe there was a scene where the main guy and his friends try gum or eat chocolate for the first time. An American soldier gave it to one of his friends to try.

    – Again hope I’m not mixing dramas up, I think there was a scene where one of the main guy’s friends gets shot in the back of his thigh. There’s no doctor around so they dig the bullet out themselves and then cauterize the wound.

    – I don’t remember much about the main girl except that I think there was one lol

  5. Ha, I recognize Stephanie’s drama and she remembers a pretty good number of scenes from it. Also, I can’t believe it’s been as many years as it has!

Thank you for doing this section, I’ve read a few of them and it was fun. ^^

I can’t remember when I watched it, but it’s somewhere between 5-8 years ago. The girl is rich the guy is poor. She is a brat. He works hard to take care of kids, I forgot whose kids they were but I don’t think they were his. She gets into an accident and loses her memory. He takes care of her and lies about her identity. I remember her loving jajangmyeon a lot and being very messy, destroying her pristine image was funny.

    Other scenes:
    – Before amnesia, an auction. The rich girl basically places an absurd amount of money on an art piece. There was some argument between the leads in this scene but I cannot remember what it was.

    – Before amnesia, the rich girl gets her car stuck in the mud at the side of a highway on a rainy night. The guy helps her and lets her into his van. She, however, mistakes his mannequins for some murder or rape or whatever and freaks out.

    – A little boy gets disregarded or something by his teacher for his art. The rich girl (after amnesia) critiques his teacher’s art and basically brings her down. She then encourages the boy who of course believes her ’cause she has background in art appreciation and uses all the technical terms. She says that he has a very good sense of colour or something along those lines.

    – I think at the end of the drama I remember a jam and them getting out of their cars and reuniting among the cars or something…

That’s literally all I remember. I think there should be a second male and female lead to complete the square but I cannot remember their existence.

Also known as fantasy couple, by the Hong sister's, yup, I agree.

In a side note, the American movie was called overboard. It was one of my mom's favorites :-)

No. 4 seems like the movie Joint Security Area, starring Lee Young Ae, Lee Byung Hun & Song Kang Ho.

I don't think any of those things happened in JSA... JSA isn't even set during the Korean War. There also weren't any American soldiers handing out gum or chocolate or whatever, just 2 North and 2 South Korean ones.. plus the Korean-Swiss lady that conducted the investigation.

I don't think no. 4 is JSA. I just watched JSA a month ago and there isn't a beach, its also not set during the Korean war, and the guys from North and South are not old friends, instead they get friendly because they're stationed in guard posts on the opposing banks of a river.

The third one probably is "APT". I dont remember the "not vampires" scene but the premise is definitely the same.

How can i request to know which drama there is? i have a drama in mind but Im not sure how to ask.
Can i just post it here?

I remember watching this drama a couple of years ago
but im not entire sure when it was
it was a hospital drama
I don't think i watched it all the way to the end.
But it was about a really famous surgeon (or a surgeon that becomes famous over time) and a not so famous one.. One that was looked down at because he was a newbie
There was this incident when the really famous surgeon goes out of korea to do a neck surgery on some famous white-man's wife.
During that time, the non famous guy and his friends have to watch the hospital and take care of it, since the "boss" is gone.
One of the men at the hospital shakes in his bed so much that they have to tie him down. Then i think he loses his heart rate, so they do that thing where they take two handle like objects and puts gel on it to try to get the heart rate going again.
Anyways, it fails and he dies.
The family and everyone is astounded, since he was under the care of such a surgeon that is well known to suceed (the one that went out of the country)
and although he gave instruction to the newer and "lower" surgeons to not do anything, he claims that it was their fault and that he left very clear instructions on what to do.
they go into a trial and everything
Another scene that i remember is the "bad" men (the people that go out of the country to do neck surgery) are discussing one of the court sessions and talking about how they all lied so naturally as they joke about how they could be actors instead of surgeons..
I want to finish it, because i recently remembered this, but i dont know what it is! help please?

4. Christine

I remember this!! This is definitely the drama "Wang-Cho."

I watched this with my parents too (only bits and pieces) when I was about 8 or 9. That detail (about the two beings friends, another guy ends up shooting him thinking he is held at gunpoint) is one of the most memorable moments for me. (Gack, sorry if I start rambling, so excited that I remembered this, lol)

The main character/guy was like a gangster-ish...? But kinda like Hong Gil Dong in that he helped out the poor. He was pretty high up. Once the war breaks out, he enlists/gets drafted/becomes a soldier, and I know I am forgetting a lot of scenes, but... That scene you remember is when the main character spots a North Korean spy, but it turns out to be his younger brother OR it was a friend he was very very close to in the gang before war (I'm pretty sure that guy called him hyungnim). The two are walking together, talking, catching up, but one of the South Korean soldiers (who I think also was a part of the gang before war) sees his leader and friend seemingly in danger. So, this guy shoots him and belately realizes he's shot their long time friend. (All 3 were friends).

It was gum!! Lols, I can't believe I remember this. They were so excited since it was the first time they ever saw it, but one of the guys swallow it on accident. Lols, and they all hit him on the head...

I think another detail from the drama is that while they are hiding, one of the soldiers start eating a potato/sweet potato. But then he accidentally drops it and that ends up revealing their location to the enemy...

The time frame is about right (this drama aired in 1999), so I hope this was the drama you were looking for!! =)

That show was so great. I wish I could watch it again.

The group of friends were homeless men. The leader (Cha In Pyo's character) was called Wan Cho, meaning boss.

The gum scene was hilarious. They didn't understand what gum was and were talking about how they never have to go hungry again. The guy who swallowed the gum was mentally handi-capped, but had great aim and was a great shot. The friends would give him crackers to reward him. :)

I also remember the funny scene where couple of the guys rigged up a way to steal electricity. They had to lie to Wan Cho about the city giving it to them for free. LOL.

I was sobbing at the scene where the friend gets shot and dies. Never forgot it. The whole gang was sobbing after they realized it was they're friend.

Is Wang cho the same as Street King or Golden Era? I can't find any of the first two in Cha In pyo's biography, while Golden Era is listed as MBC, year 2000.

Number 1 is definitely Holy Land from 2012, a four episode miniseries startting Dong Ho from U-KISS. There's also a japanese version (Holyland) from 2005 that was 13 episodes. i only watched the japanese version and it was quite good, buut the korean one has definitely a better looking lead :D

Number 5 is Couple or Trouble/ Fantasy Couple from 2006, a Hong sisters drama based on an american movie (like someone already mentioned) Would definitely recommend :)

I don't know any of the dramas mentioned here. O.o
I even thought that Christine's drama is The Kings Two Hearts because of the North Korean South Korean soldier plot but then she mentioned watching it in the 90s-2000. No wonder she keeps saying hope she wasn't mixing what she remembers with other dramas.

Would be downloading Fantasy Couple though --- because I'm curious..
