Talk about a casting spree: Prime Minister and I has added Ryu Jin (Baby Faced Beauty, Standby) to its lineup as a foil to the prime minister hero, played by Lee Beom-soo. Ooh, I like this match-up between such two strong, charismatic leads.
As we know by now, this drama is about a prime minister with a messy household of kids he’s raising on his own (and badly, at that), and how he falls for the young mother who joins the family (Yoon-ah). Ryu Jin’s character is the ambitious minister of strategy and finance who is sometimes able to jab at the prime minister’s weaknesses, making for a tension-filled dynamic between the two politicians.
It’s a particularly complicated rivalry because he was once tight friends with Lee Beom-soo, close enough to have introduced him to his sister. The couple married but after she died, Ryu Jin wrestled with complicated feelings of blame and resentment toward his brother-in-law. And then Ryu Jin finds out that his first love (Chae Jung-ahn) is in love with his buddy, which adds a new angle to their relationship.
That also makes Ryu Jin the uncle to the main kids, and that keeps him in the prime minister’s orbit, all while political strife and scheming whirl around them. Oh, and get this: The prime minister’s three children are named Woo-ri, Nara, Man-seh. PFFFFFT. (Spoken together, that’s a phrase meaning, “Long live our country.”)
At this point I’ll be watching this show for the side characters, since I’m giving the main romance the huge side-eye. (Hey, if it works, great. If it doesn’t… well at least I was never invested.) Prime Minister and I premieres in December.
