Teasers and stills for new weekender Gold Rainbow

With Scandal and Goddess of Marriage having completed their runs over the weekend, it’s time to make way for the new batch of dramas with Thrice Married Woman headed to SBS (it’ll premiere a week later), and Gold Rainbow premiering next week on MBC. That’s rather soon given that I feel like they just barely confirmed their lead actor, but with a childhood portion that’ll cover a hefty 10 episodes, it’s almost like having a miniseries’ running time to prep.

Leads UEE (Jeon Woo-chi) and Jung Il-woo (The Moon That Embraces the Sun) haven’t even started shooting their portion of the drama yet, but they went to visit the set in Busan, where their younger counterparts Kim Yoo-jung (May Queen) and Oh Jae-mu (Firstborn) were busy setting the stage for their love story to come.

Kim Yoo-jung and UEE star as Baek Won, the leader of a group of orphans who band together to make their own family under the care of surrogate father Kim Sang-joong (The Chaser). He appears to be a kind benevolent ajusshi for once and I’m looking forward to seeing Bad Daddy play a warm character, though part of me will never be able to turn off that niggling feeling that at any moment, his true (eeevil) agenda will be uncovered.

Do Ji-won (I Miss You) plays Baek Won’s mother, and we pretty much learn from the first teaser that this is going to be your classic birth secret story, where Baek Won gets torn from her mother’s arms, and Mom is left to believe her child died along with her husband. It seems like it’s an evil mother-in-law at the center of the tragic turn of events, with a guilty-looking Jo Min-ki (Two Weeks) lurking around. He’ll be father to Oh Jae-mu/Jung Il-woo… which might make this You Killed My Father, Prepare to Love Me And Then Be A Noble Idiot About It?

The love square will include two other members of Baek Won’s found family, played by Cha Ye-ryun (Royal Family) and Lee Jae-yoon (Heartless City) (and child actors Song Yoo-jung and Seo Young-joo). They’ll complicate matters as a jealous and ambitious sister, and a protective oppa.

The drama is described as the success story of seven orhpans with bonds tighter than blood, who overcome extreme hardship by sticking together when they had no one else in the world. I’m hoping that the underdog success story (and romance, of course) outweighs the tragedy and makes it worth a watch. I guess we find out next week.

Gold Rainbow premieres November 2.

Is it me, or does Jung Il Woo not look so much like himself in that split screen still with his younger counterpart?

I agree, I almost couldn't recognize him in the stills. it was weird...

I too was a little, um, wow, he's looking different, even with the first round of promo. I'm guessing it's the hairstyle and that his hair is dark, give him a totally different look. I don't think I've ever seen JIW without a a shaggy/ bang 'do. All these new hair styles for men this year are not the most flattering. It's like the stylists bought stock in pomade and hair gel. I'm harboring a suspicion that Purple Can Aquanet is in use.

Yes, it's in his new hair do. We rarely saw him before with an uncovered forehead.

But however he looks and I don't know what it is about him, but I always have to smile broadly when I see him. Let's hope, this show is good, as I will watch it no matter what due to him.

Its his hairstyle and also I think he's slightly chubbier than before??

0

Hopefully he gained some weight, he was far too skinny. The long shooting schedule ahead, he should have a little extra to loose. Though this isn't really an extra now, it's just healthier than before.

0

It does not appear to me he has any weight gain. I just think it's the hair lol.

I really like his hair off the forehead. I am tired of seeing all the korean hotties with their foreheads almost always covered with lots of hair...this is refreshing.

Haha not digging the hair either

I think the hairstyle makes his face a perfect oval. I agree it makes him look a little strange. But he is still awesome.

Apparently his adult self lived through the additional tragedy of an awesome nose reconstruction. Since he was a penniless orphan, he must have volunteered for medical experiments to support his fellow orphans. Sniff.

I was interested in this show but the whole birth secret, evil grandma, killer daddy thing just has Makjangpalooza written all over it. But, then again, Stars Falling From the Sky had pretty much all of those same things (plus some kind of crazy Love Hexagon) and it was enjoyable enough.

Maybe it was all that and more. But Stars Falling From the Sky is one of my favorite dramas. I think it had to do with the changes in the main character -- he was so snotty at first, and without him knowing it, he became a human being. So quickly that the second lead didn't even see it coming. And yes, the kids were altogether quite adorable. I thoroughly enjoyed the show no matter how makjang it was.

The trailers do look extraordinarily makjang. I'm having a hard time working up enthusiasm for this compilation of overused makjang tropes. I don't know...Sometimes dramas full of angst and drama really grab me and won't let go, like Can You Hear My Heart, Baker King Kim Taku, and Stars Falling From the Sky, but others like, I Miss You, and 100 year Inheritance irritate the hell out of me. I suspect I'd find this one irksome, especially when they tear the baby from her mother's arms. Bad start, that.

I think Stars Falling From the Sky was not as makjang as Baker King. There were so many adorable moments between the kids and the men of the house.

Dammit, why do these two have to be in a weekend 100+ episode drama? Okay, I know it's not but still...

Those two look so good together. And they're both fantastic actors in their own right. And did I mention how good they look together? I can definitely see the chemistry.

Alas, I've had my share of weekend dramas, and it's just not good for me. As good as the content is, or as fast as it can go, it's still too long.

How I wish UEE and Jung Il-woo signed up for a prime time 16-20 romantic comedy drama.

They'd be so perfect. Ahhh. :(

only if it is Jung il Woo! I mean, if I managed to get through Unstoppable High Kicks´ 160 something episodes, I think it is going to be ok! cause he brought a spark to each episode. maybe only if it is him and UEE can this many episodes still shine. I have a hope at least. if he could do it once, he can do it again.

I think it is going to be awesome despite the makjang cause Kim Sang - Joon is such a crazyass good actor

it is kind of a curse, isn´t it, when someone manages to play a Perfect Character in the sense of being beyond believable. like the Dad in CH which haunts KSJ forever. but I am hoping in this drama we will remember him as a different character (as well)

Me, personally, I think Jung Il Woo looks much better than the other guy, which one´s that, 6th pic below the video
he has never looked conventionally HANDSOME to me, but he has this expression full of emotions, that he doesn´t need too much dialogue and it already says much. in a 10 x better way than in the case of Lee Min ho....

In a way, Jung Il woo is not conventionally handsome , yet I like his look more than a perfectly handsome face. Some conventionally handsome guys often bore me soon. He can convey many layers of emotions. I remember that Colin Firth had an interview and in there he mentioned something like ,,,because he is not conventional handsome, his face can become a canvas for many roles,,, I get a feeling that Jung Il Woo has this sort of face.

Colin Firth is one hot ajusshi. He looks the same even from 20yrs ago. Jung Il Woo hasn't shed much of his flower boy image imo. I think the army might do it for him.

thats exactly what i mean. he gives you this look that just captures you and thats why, however many episodes, it can even be a 3 year drama with 300 episodes and it would feel fresh if he is in it.

and somehow I dont WANT him to do a normal, short drama. cause then what? he´d be gone for a year again without us getting a glimpse? the short drama would be too short. it would feel as though all is not said and done from him.

I agree with you redfox. He really can project different looks and he doesnt always look good. Sometimes, he can look like he had too much plastic surgery. But rewatching FBRs, i have a renewed love for him coz he really managed to convey so many emotions so well in that drama. I just never tire of seeing his work in there.

Having seen him in real life though, walking, talking, i have to say i gaped. Because in real life, he is extremely handsome. I remembered turning to the lady next to me saying ' golly, they ARE ( meaning e k actors, although it was just him then) REALLY good looking in real life!!' I didnt expect it. Because as you pointed out , i didnt think he was conventionally good looking before i saw him in real life either.

having just finished Scandal i am super reluctant into going into another long drama with birth secrets abound. and seeing as i am watching 4 dramas right now, i may have to sit this one out until at least one of those ends...Jung Il Woo is the only reason that i kind of want to watch it.

I was actually really excited for this drama because of all the descriptions I've read...but once I saw I trailer, I think I'll stay far away from it. If it's good and not a cauldron full of makjang with a WTF or irritatingly sad ending, I'll think about marathoning it. :) The fast-forward button will be my friend during those makjangy scenes.

OMG, I could not be more excited for this than I already am! Jung Il-woo is back after such a long time (it feels like, since I didn't watch The Moon that Embraces the Sun, so the last thing I saw him in was FBRS in 2011!) so I'm so glad he's back! YAY! And with UEE, whom I adore to pieces! I can't wait to see this. Plus the kids are really spot on in casting. I think the kids and their adult counterparts look a lot alike, especially UEE and Kim Yoo-jung.

Not sure how I feel about the whole makjang-ish beginning, but I'll watch it if only to get to the kids and then the adults. Nice to see City Hunter Bad Daddy being nice. I hope. Also, the first video didn't play for me, something about the content being owned by MBC.

I love UEE but lately her partners are so not my type: Joo won, Cha Tea Huyn and now Jang IlWoo. I can't get past his eyes, really small and close together, and it just ruins the whole expirience for me.
But the drama seems to be interesting so I'll give it a chance, especially for UEE, Kim Yoo Jung and the hottie Lee Jae Yoon who should be (in my opinion) the lead.

I didn't like CTH either, but JW was quite cute with her. Il-woo is rather charismatic both in acting and appearance and his velvety voice envelops you tenderly, he just grows on you. Of course, different people, different taste.

his eyes are his best asset and if he ever ever did anything to change them they would become motionless. one letter short of emotionless.

to me it sounds like ou are saying he should have his eyes made bigger. well I hate plastic surgery. just what the word says: it is all plastic. artificial. and when people turn 45 ...
I would like it if my favorite actors stay away from it. if I like someone, it is never because of the size of their eyes or the shape of their nose. it is for who they are. in the rest of the world there are some people I liked 22 years ago and I like them even more now.
I wish some virus would turn all plastic surgeons into wax statues so they would keep knives away from people.

I was just watching the MHIYD segment in Entertainment Weekly recently, and they showed LDG as a singer in the past... and I suddenly realised he's the singer guy in the Korea-Japan movie "Friends" with Won Bin, right?? Anyone watched that too? He's lost a lot of weight since! I'm loving all the 4 actors in this show, fighting! Please get >20% and we can see LDG and JYH do a silly dance!
