Choi Jin-hyuk, Song Ji-hyo up for cable medical rom-com

Looks like tvN knows a good thing when it sees it, because it’s keeping the new weekend drama timeslot it created for Answer Me 1994 and lining up its follow-up drama: a romantic comedy potentially starring Choi Jin-hyuk and Song Ji-hyo. Offers are out to both actors, who are both said to be favorably considering (decisions not final yet, yada yada yada). But that would be a pretty great match-up, wouldn’t it?

The drama is titled Emergency Couple, and is set, aptly enough, in an emergency room. The two leads were married through medical school, but divorced and went their separate ways… until they find themselves working in the same ER. Thus begins their second chance at courtship as initial bickering leads them back to romance.

Which sounds great and all, only… I in no way want my emergency room doctors distracted by sexual-angst-driven bickering! Professionalism please? The drama does promise to depict sincere growth as well as the life-and-death stories of the work in the hospital, so we can hope that the romance works its way into the proceedings in a natural way. (I have an aversion to medical dramas that are really just romance dramas wearing doctor’s gowns.)

It’s about time Choi Jin-hyuk gets to headline his own romantic drama, ’cause the man can sizzle when he’s on and it’s so sad when he doesn’t win his love. He’s gotten sidetracked a bit with some not-so-great dramas (Panda and Hedgehog, It’s Okay Daddy’s Girl) but his star is on the rise and this year solidified his popularity with Gu Family Book and Heirs. Song Ji-hyo hasn’t had a hit drama in a while (her last three being Mandate of Heaven, Gye Baek, and Crime Squad) but she’s got a sassy on-air personality and I’d love to see her in a straight-up rom-com.

Emergency Couple will be directed by PD Kim Chul-kyu, who, yes, has the terrible Paradise Ranch on his resumé but also the better-received cable drama She is Wow from earlier this year, as well as political drama Daemul and historical hit Hwang Jini. Writing is Choi Yoon-jung of the 2002 mania hit Ruler of Your Own World; on the upside, it was a well-regarded drama, but on the downside, she wasn’t the main writer and it’s her only credit.

The drama will follow Answer Me 1994 as tvN’s next Friday-Saturday series, premiering in January.

Aww really? You should maybe try to watch the movie Frozen Flower and the drama I Need Romance. I thought both actors showcased good acting there. Be warned, you will suffer from intense 2nd lead syndrome while watching INR.

to be honest SJH is annoying as an actress and haven't proven her talent yet.. but it is a rom-com so maybe that will be better for her.

I love CJH as an actor. Not only is he handsome, but he's talented. However, I've yet to find a drama that I love SJH in. I love HER to bits mostly because of RM. She's just her there and I find that's more interesting and endearing than her acting. Granted, I've only seen her in Goong. I'm not a fan of medical dramas, but I'd probably give it a try.

Hmmm, my thoughts exactly.
I don't she has been given a chance to really show her tomboy, sassy side in a drama. She can be really feisty on Running Man, and I want to see her channel that into her new drama.

Hoping, hoping...

I think the Choi Jinhyuk and Song Jihyo met on RM (for the 'Heirs' special), right?

.... and as I was just saying; dramaland just help themselves but produce dramas of the same theme. UGH!! How many more medical dramas are we gonna get before it finally gets old?

Also... isn't CJH like turning 29 very soon? As in... isn't he going to enlist? Or did he already complete it? Because if he didn't, he's clearly waiting for the last minute enlistment and also attracting a whole lot of criticism.

Hyun Bin waited until the last minute, completed an exemplary two years in the Marine Corp, then returned amidst much fan fair only to spend the last couple of years lolly-gagging around. Hope CJH won't follow that template.

I know Song Ji Hyo from Running Man and she seems to have an affable personality on variety but I am not familiar with her drama work. I've only seen Choi Jin Hyuk in Gu Family Book and Heirs and in my opinion he has amazing presence on the small screen. I look forward to his scenes in Heirs. It's such a shame he's received so little screen time on that show. I wonder if this would be his last project before departing for his mandatory military duty.

Orrrrrrr they're fun things to click. People are still free to comment!

I do reserve the right to remove the downvoting if it gets abused, though.

0

Well I've observed the disasters that have occurred on other sites after implementing it so I'm pessimistic, upvotes aren't too bad, but downvotes, especially when unchecked (as in people don't need an account to do it and can just reload the page to click again), can cause problems.

0

I like the like and dislike buttons!
It's a good tool for someone like me to participate, cause I'm far away from being fluent in english! (I can read ok, but write is very difficult)

0

I have mixed feelings about down buttons. Many sites disable them, especially those where you don't have to log in, as it can lead to abuse and a form of bullying. But this site is a bit more civilized than most, so maybe worth trying for a week or so.

0

People who are saying they don't like his acting are already getting downvoted, so I'd say we're well on our way to discovering how bad an idea the dislike button is.

Yes, most users here are nice, but if any sort of criticism is met with dislikes and disapproval, people will think twice before speaking their mind, if it is not absolutely positive fun things.

It's your website and all, but I just don't like the idea of such a nice community being filled with bullies who boo everyone disagreeing out.

I also like having the freedom to discuss things without feeling unappreciated by the lack of upvotes, or discouraged and hurt by downvotes. Since the buttons are so big, the like/dislike culture becomes even more obvious and may become the driving force for discussion. I'm now afraid of commenting something controversial.

Additionally, as someone who is very familiar with the K-pop world, blatant "dislike" spurs trolls into becoming more aggressive. Without likes/dislikes, these annoyances end with one comment because people just ignore them. When these people are ignored, trolling is notably decreased overall.

0

Yeah it discourages people from commenting, and fans will also swarm to downvote negative comments.

0

@Katzer

I haven't even thought about some of the sasaeng fans possibly down-voting the comments that show any dislike for their oppa, even if it is a logical statement backed up by reasons.

0

While I don't share the same reasoning as you, I do appreciate that "dislike" button was once again removed. Let's face it, nothing nice can come from a "dislike" button. It's not like you use a "dislike" button to show amusement, or cheer someone on, or show comradery. It's sole purpose is to tear someone else down. Who needs that?

0

I think many people use the "dislike" button not to show dislike or disagreement of the comment, but of the person that wrote it. It looks like even Google has removed the dislike button - it still shows up, but does not do anything that I can see.

0

Leave some for the rest of us please....is this now his first leading role? (flipping finally!)

Well imo Kim Soo Hyun is decent enough, but he's still over-hyped some. I just find it frustrating how people will praise any male star who's good-looking with decent screen presence, while bashing Go Ara and other actresses when they actually have more talent.

i like go ara, but before Answer Me 1994 she was known as a bad actress with a pretty face, so I don't see how she's much different from the other stars you've mentioned. A lot of her early popularity was from her looks more than talent; she's not very good in anything else I've seen her in, tbh. Like-able enough, but a little... wooden or something. idk.. She reminds me kind of Yoon Eun-hye before Coffee Prince. Pretty face, inoffensive as an actress, but nothing to really get excited about... and then suddenly she's in this role that forces her to be kind of a tomboy, and she rocks it. but idk, i might not be a good judge of acting talent, either.

choi jin-hyuk isn't the Best Actor In All Of Korea or anything, but I wouldn't call him Lee Min-ho, either... and Lee Min-ho isn't really that bad, unless whatever character he's playing is trying to be funny (one thing I've learned from Heirs is that boy doesn't have very good comic timing). Kim Soo-hyun is a pretty good actor, as well. I think he seems over-hyped because he's been in projects that had reallybig names attached to them, like Moon that Embraces the Sun; The Thieves; Covertly, Grandly... but he's been pretty good in them so I wouldn't say it's for nothing (well, at least the first two; I haven't seen the most recent one).

Looks wise, I think Lee Min Ho is about a seven and a half one the one to ten scale of handsome. I've never swooned over him the way I do others, but I think he's a really talented actor whom I tune in to watch because of his acting. Just my two pennies of course. YMMV.

I really like the "like/thumbs up" button -- i think it's nice to have other people agree with you without necessarily having to comment. On the flip side, i could see how the "dislike" button might discourage some people from posting their opinions in fear of getting down-voted.
But i guess you could argue that you should post whatever you want to post regardless of people's opinions since they're your own. Still, there's some very sensitive people in the world who don't take negativity well.
Just a small opinion but i vote for only having the "like" button. :)

YES. Song Ji Hyo and Joo Sang Wook, please.

This two can play a good rom-com pair.

Did you see them being cute in running man too? HAHA

Nice choices :-)

Yoon Si Yoon and IU would be super cute.

I would have liked to see her paired up with him next week too. But I have no hope it'd actually happen, she rarely get paired with guests (male or female).

i think he'll be grouped with jae seok and kwang soo based on the little preview that i've watched. yeap, she's always paired or grouped with gary which i'm okay with but a change now and then is welcomed too.

"Writing is Choi Yoon-jung of the 2002 mania hit Ruler of Your Own World; on the upside, it was a well-regarded drama, but on the downside, she wasn’t the main writer and it’s her only credit."

*no train wrecks...no train wrecks*

Omg I love this pairing. Still a noona romance but at least the man is smoking hot and looks nothing like a dongsaeng. I'm just wary of their personalities. Please make them quirky and cheery. I love them both but much better if they aren't mopping in despair. They aren't the greatest actor or actress but we've seen how the right roles bring out great performances. More sass please for both....

Pretty please.....

It's not really a noona romance. Their characters are supposed to be the same age.

Oops, I guess you meant the actual ages of the actors. In that case, yeah, it is a noona romance.

but choi jin hyuk looks more mature than his age in my opinion.

Ow yeah.....finally a leading role for Jinhyuk and on a rom-com at that! He was one of the 2 only reasons I checked out Heirs (the other one was because of the writer), and just as I thought, what a horrible drama. A depressing waste for Jinhyuk.
I've been waiting for Jihyo to star in rom-com, I think it's her kind of genre.
Plus, it will be aired on TvN.
Will definitely check it out.

I adore Song Ji-hyo, so I'm happy she might be doing another drama.

And Choi Jin-hyuk is having a really great year, even if Heirs isn't what is what all hyped up to be. I'm a fan now, and I'm glad he's doing well. I hope he does this drama, if only so I can see him in a rom-com with Song Ji-hyo.

well I like song ji hyo's personality but no so much for her acting. I do think she will do better in this drama since it's romcom, which I think will suit her better than saeguk drama.

The thing about SJH is she is different in everything I have seen her in. I have to doublecheck D-wiki to make sure it's the same actress.

I like her. I haven't been wow'ed by her but I blame the scripts - especially Mandate of Heaven where they could have made her and LDW much much hotter. Wasn't there a Joseon version of the tango they could have done in a library somewhere?

I just read a slew of reports from various Korean news portals on Naver.com that the casting has been comfirmed! I'm excited to see Song Ji-hyo in a modern drama (not a sageuk) and I hope she really steps it up here since she's an actress with substantial talent but her career has been largely defined by her variety activities.

I've been waiting for 3 years for her to finally play in a rom-com tv series.

Jackal is Coming was just really bad - i didn't even finish it! Song Ji Hyo and Kim Jae Joong couln't make up for the bad script.

It seems like medical dramas might be the trend for this year huh? I don't really get it though because I feel like that kind of limits your audience since there are a lot of people who can't handle medical stuff. Personally I just find them really boring, give me another time travel drama any day. But I do love Ji Hyo so I might give this a go.

Since you mentioned that the director also did Paradise Ranch I can't help but think doesn't this have basically the exact same plot but swap the Jeju island resort for a hospital? Well I guess there are a lot of other dramas like this too.

Still, coming from the same director does this mean I can look forward to the main leads bumping into each other in the corridors and looking surprised and then awkwardly staring at each other for what feels like eternity even though they both know that they work in the same place at least once every episode? because if so then then you can count me in. I might be the only person ever who actually enjoyed Paradise Ranch, it was so awful that it was funny but it was also very sweet.

There must be more than one medical drama in south korea, I think you just assume that this year is trend of medical drama because good doctor is popular and another medical drama "medical top team" airing in same year.

My assumption is like that too, many medical drama in South Korea but this year the range from one medical drama to other is really short. I think it's not only because of good rating of good doctor but the story leave something deep, many good rating drama but after it finish it's easily forgetable

and this is totally off topic, but i wonder if gary is gonna be jelly of romantic scenes hahahah *total wishful thinking*

No, he has been took up lead role on SBS's my daughter flower and SBS's it's ok daddy girl. I think he's great for supporting role and scene stealer but he's not great for taking up leading role.

Haha, I just dissed Lee Jong Seok's potential medical drama yesterday, but this new drama concept, I like!

Ji Hyo needs some serious love in kdramas, Choi Jin Hyuk too. I don't really have a favourite couple in this genre, the exs that gets back together, so I'm looking forward! :D

But how does romance play out in ER? With the blood gushing, bones broken and immediate surgery needed (as they always do), we'll see.
