Lee Hong-ki headlines new cable fantasy drama

Cable network TV Chosun is getting back in the drama game in the coming year with a new fantasy drama called Hundred Year Bride, and has cast FT Island’s Lee Hong-ki (You’re Beautiful) and newbie model-turned-actress Yang Jin-sung (she played Ji Sung’s first love in Secret) as the leading couple. You’re Beautiful was actually the last thing I saw Lee Hong-ki in, so it seems like forever since he was last in dramaland (he’s since done a movie).

The 16-episode drama is called a fantasy melo, and is about a plain-looking girl from a small town on a tiny island who one day comes across a bracelet that makes the wearer beautiful. Pfffffft. O…kay. I mean, you could’ve gone with gumihos, vampires, time-travelers, or body-swappers, but prettifying bracelet it is. It’s also a drama with doppelgangers, or possibly twins (though I’m thinking the magical bracelet puts the kibosh on the twin thing) because Yang Jin-sung plays both the sweet, homely island girl and a chic urban rich girl. The evil one uses the sweet one for her own ambition, so it’s looking like a princess and pauper switcheroo.

Lee Hong-ki plays a second-generation chaebol with triple-threat looks, schooling, and money. He’s your typical prickly-on-the-outside hero with some pain from his past hiding on the inside, and is self-indulgent and bad at sincere relationships, but goodhearted underneath it all. Of course he is. Dramaland knows no other way. The show is described as a story about youthful love and friendship, and will focus on self-discovery and the search for sincere, earnest love.

Hundred Year Bride is due to premiere in February 2014.

Sounds pretty cute. Never expected a lead role out of Hong Ki--especially the prickly chaebol type but we'll see. Lol at the Pretty Girl Bracelet. Maybe if it allowed her to solve crime and beat up bad guys like Sailor Moon, but if she just gets prettier it's kind of hilarious.

I am interested though!

Maybe the bracelet makes her prettier so she goes on a quest to seduce 10 chaebols.

Oh wait. Wrong drama. :)

That's something I would watch. But I guess the gold digging theme cuts a little too close to the heart of most chaebol - Cinderella stories ;-)

Don't worry. There'll be lots of other men to tempt her little heart away. So, she'll have really thought about it before settling on Mr. Rich, Grouchy, Rude as Hell, But Really Very Nice.

Urgh, this woman in the office across from mine has the most grating laugh. you can hear her three hallways away. She makes me want to stinkbomb her office.

HAHA! Somehow, I do feel if the gender was reversed for that sort of plot it would be more interesting. Like a zanier family-friendly 12 Men in a Year or something.

He was so cute in You're Beautiful and I'm surprised he hasn't done any acting projects (except a movie) since then....yay for his next drama.... :-)

He did a Japanese drama but it was terrible, lol. I watched it solely for him, and I wish I hadn't, ha ha. I'm happy to see him in something else though, and I think the actress they've cast opposite him will suit him well.

I haven't seen him since you're beautiful also but I rewatched it a couple months ago so it really wasn't that long ago but I'm excited to see him back on tv

Similar concepts... S.Koreans are so hooked on Chaebol heros and modern day Cinderella stories...
I love Lee Honki and let's see what happens with his first time lead drama :)

I wonder what would happen to TV in Korea without chaebols?

I've seen that girl in secret and boy...she ain't plain I can tell you that....how are they planning to make her look plain...she's damn gorgeous!

I think that plain in k-drama talk means a bad hairdo and maybe bib overalls.

BTW, has there EVER been a chaebol son without some painful or secret past in a drama?

She's certainly a knock-out. Sounds like she might be a pretty good actress too. I love Hong-Ki, so this one looks like it might have promise. Lead role: Hong-Ki hwiating!

Well, so far the plot - if you could call it that - sounds pretty iffy - a lot like something tossed together out of the Korean TV Cliches 201 book except with a prettifying bracelet. Not waiting with bated breath on this one.

I dunno - there will be some new shows coming out at around the same time, so it is likely to have some competition, if those shows are any good. And even the hottest actors in the world can only do so much with a bad plot.

you know what would be fun, a drama where an ass is just an ass with no sweet underbelly or heart of gold to redeem him.

K-drama writers seem to be unable to break out of the box unless prodded by some Japanese manga or something though. Almost as odd would be a drama where there are no power struggles among mistresses, illegitimate kids, and evil stepsisters.

Really don't care to find out about some chaebol offspring's pain when we all know it will all be rainbows and unicorns in the end....This sort of sounds like the TW (?) drama this summer.

Anyway...pass.

Hmmm... I've been looking forward to seeing Lee Hong Ki as a lead in a new drama (one that wasn't cringe-worthy).

The lead actress... I've seen her in almost all her projects and she gets the job done. But her voice can get really annoying. I hope she doesn't overdo it trying to be "perky". And yes, as usual they're casting a BEAUTIFUL woman to play a Plain Jane.

The synopsis though... URGH! That does NOT sound appealing.

Agree about her voice being somewhat grating. I didn't really like her in Secret or City Hunter…and the synopsis does sound pretty silly…I'll probably skip this

Looking forward to seeing Hong-ki in a new project. He was really funny in the International WGM, especially with his fixation on fingernail painting/decorating - and it resulted in his Nail Art book.
Also, he did a cameo on Heirs, a stage scene with Bo-na and was really funny there.

Honestly, he should do more comedies than dramas. He's has a natural comic sense of timing, but in dramas he's a little heavy handed. I enjoy watching him in Cheomdangdong 111.
