Lee Pil-mo and Choi Yeo-jin join Emergency Couple

Now that upcoming tvN rom-com Emergency Couple has secured its leads in Choi Jin-hyuk and Song Ji-hyo, it’s time to start staffing the hospital. I’m not sure why we’ve got such an onslaught of medical dramas lately, but I’m hoping that the romance and comedy aren’t just empty monikers in this one. Lee Pil-mo (Light and Shadow) and Choi Yeo-jin (Incarnation of Money) have been cast as second leads, and they’ll be joining the lead pair as doctors who all work in the same emergency room.

The 20-episode drama is set to be a Friday-Saturday show on tvN, taking over Answer Me 1994’s timeslot when it ends. It stars Choi Jin-hyuk and Song Ji-hyo as a couple who got married while in med school because of a “fateful meeting, fearing they might never meet again.” Then they ended up divorced because they fought like cats and dogs, and left each other “wishing that they’d never meet again.” Six years later, they end up interns in the same emergency room, and are forced to work together while bickering as always. I love the setup of a couple that already fell apart once—the angst is inherent in the premise, and the flashbacks will likely be bittersweet. I’m also just excited about the lead pairing because (fingers crossed) they should be really cute together.

There isn’t much info on the second leads, other than the fact that they’re also doctors. Choi Yeo-jin and Choi Jin-hyuk were co-stars in I Need Romance for tvN, but they hardly shared any scenes in that drama. That’ll likely change this time around, though we’ll have to wait to find out just how large this staff and how complicated its attendant romantic entanglements will be. The drama starts shooting mid-December, which means Choi Jin-hyuk is pretty much going straight from the set of Heirs to his next project. At least he won’t be wasted in this one?

Emergency Couple follows Answer Me 1994 and premieres in January on tvN.

AGREED...he was such a driving force to the story of Gu Family Book as hot Daddy Gumiho, and so incredibly wasted in Heirs! It's about time...I've been a fan since Pasta and just always wished he picked better projects!

I've liked LPM since Son's of Sol Pharmacy, CYJ was actually pretty good in Incarnation of Money, SJH is consistently good (despite her last few dramas not doing well, I did watch all of Mandate of Heaven).

I've had more than my share of medical dramas this year (Good Doctor and Medical Top Team), but seeing the promising casting...I might tune in, especially since it's on tvN.

Yea, wasted for sure. I'm sure he didn't break a sweat shooting his (very few) scenes in Heirs. He's probably secretly wishing Heirs would just end already as his foot is halfway out the door.

So... am I a masochist?

I've just gone from Good Doctor to Medical Top Team. Do I really want to recruit a subbing team for YET another medical drama?

I love Choi Jin Hyuk but seriously, am all medical drama-ed out. I don't think any of us are up for another round of inter hospital politics.

It's a tvN drama- so it will be heavy on the romance and kissing and light on the gore right?

Aww. Maybe you should take a break? There might be others who can sub it.

But yeah...thanks for the hard work you've put into subbing. I watched only Good Doctor and I was grateful that it was subbed in a timely manner. :)

I'm excited that Song Ji Hyo AND Choi Jin Hyuk are already booked for this drama (especially for the guy). Jin Hyuk was so underused in Heirs so hopefully this new drama will make up for it.

The premise sounds cute but why must it be a medical drama?!? I've always avoided that genre like the plague because no matter what the getup is, if the background is set in hospital, then I'm out. I don't remember the last time I finish a medical drama, let alone started one.

BUT I'll make a major exception because of the main leads. Hope it will be good!! *crosses fingers*

Also "Golden Age of Daughters-In-Law" and "Sons of Sol Pharmacy House" and many many others! If Choi Jin-hyuk didn't already have me with one foot in this show, Lee Pil-mo just sealed it for good!!! One of my ajusshi crushes finally returns from the musical stage to the drama stage!!! Don't care what the plot entails... I AM SO EXCITED!!! *squeeeeeeeeeeee*

I almost added it, because most Korean dramas go by at least two names ;), but 'Three Brothers' and "Sons of Sol Pharmacy' are one and the same, and it also went by the name of 'My Too Perfect Sons'. 'You Are My Destiny' was Yoona's first role. 'Still Marry Me' starred Park Jin-hee. One never listed (and where I first saw Lee Pilmo) was a daily called 'As the River Flows, I'll Meet You by the River'. It was the first daily that I watched on KBS, Los Angeles.

Three Brothers (수상한 삼형제) is a different drama than Sons of Sol Pharmacy (솔약국집 아들들), and Lee Pil-mo wasn't in it. But Sol Pharmacy is worth watching.

Have you watched Sons of Sol Pharmacy House and Lights and Shadows? Lee Pil Mo did an awesome performance in there.

I am definitely watching this one.. I really like Medical Dramas per se... must be the gore, Maybe it is a guy thing.. But what I hate about these drama is the political side of the story.. the scheming, choosing sides and blackmailing it's so tiring.. Every time a show does that I always fast forward to the next scenes... I withstood Medical Top Team which almost feels like a non-medical drama so I can hope for the better, yes? It's TvN after all, I trust its execution more than the mainstreamers ya know..

And before I forget, it's also for Ace!!

I really like the cast...I don't quite like the hospital politicking too. I've skipped every other medical drama this year so far...so this one will be my first since Brain. Brain was only awesome because of Shin Ha Kyun. This being TVN I'm going to be optimistic and hope it's good.

Choi Jin Hyuk and Ji Hyo fighting~!

I will definitely watch these just because of the leads, i like both Choi Jin hyuk and Song ji hyo so i think it will be awesome to watch them as lead together even its medical drama but I am pretty sure that i will not care in medical stuff in here but still hoping less medical more rom -com...

Whoever they are, the "leads" are in for a run for their money. Lee Pilmo is one of the best and most versatile actors out there and Choi Yeo Jin tends to own the screen whenever she's on it. A great casting coup for this program... :)

I really like the cast, but the words 'medical drama' never bode well for any sense of enjoyment, though thankfully this appears to be focused more on the relationships and less on the medical stuff.

(and I hope to god Choi Jin-hyuk gets a decent role this time around, he and Im Joo-eun are so wasted in Heirs it's criminal. Though on the bright side, fewer scenes probably mean they're both well-rested before their next projects)

Lee Pil-Mo gets more handsome every year. I feel like his purpose in life is to grow into a sexy ahjusshi for my enjoyment. Thank you, Destiny.

Still, not sure if I'm up to a medical drama. Good thing it's a rom-com. I'll add least check it out.

i'm probably the only one, but i kind of would prefer to see choi yeo-jin as the lead. song ji-hyo is awesome in running man but as an actress she doesn't have that sort of screen presence that would make me sit up and watch her.

i do like lee pil-mo though, he was good in sons of sol pharmacy.

I like Choi Yeo-jin, didn't really notice her until I watched Biscuit Teacher Star Candy but she made the typical Jealous Second Lead role actually seem not so bad after all. And ia about SJH, as an actress she's a bit distant onscreen, she's better off in variety.

I'm glad that Choi Jin-hyuk and Song Ji-hyo have confirmed. They have right? Because their casting makes me really want to see this.

I'm not familiar with these two actors, though. But I would hazard a guess that Choi Yeo-jin may be Choi Jin-hyuk's character's current girlfriend? and Lee Pil-mo may or may not have a crush on Song Ji-hyo or Choi Yeo-jin. I'm not complaining or anything, it's just what I expect.

Looking forward to seeing Song Ji-hyo in another drama. I hope Choi Jin-hyuk doesn't work too much. The man needs to rest, even though I understand if he's trying to ride the wave of fame he's received since Gu Family Book. I think he's a great actor, and all the attention he's received this year has been well deserved, even though he's being wasted in Heirs. Looking forward to seeing him as a leading man, though. He's awesomesauce!

Hope there is less angst and more cute bickering until they fall in love again or something like that. Like a cuter version of monday couple.

No idea how to feel about these second leads since i dont think i have ever seen any of their performances. Hopefully it will be a decent drama

I've tried to watch a couple of medical K and J dramas, and the political stuff put off. Not so much because it was political but because it was so ludicrously over the top! You watch some of these dramas and there doesn't seem to be more than two doctors in any hospital who actually give a damn about treating patients. The rest are just caricatures.

That said, Song Ji Hyo, I hope, is getting here the role she has needed for a long time: one that requires her to expend some acting energy on something other than enduring and suffering.

Yay!
Love Choi Yeo Jin! I hope she gets to play a lively, likable character akin to her INR role, girls' friendship included.
On the other hand, I would like to see CJH play a more vibrant character than the ones I have already seen.

I like medical dramas, I guess everyone just hates the medical drama politics which I can understand. This sounds good, though.

Plus, Choi Jin Hyuk in a lead role will be fun. And I can see Song Ji Hyo as a doctor, too haha. Hope she has a brassy personality. I also think since it's tVN, they'll throw in a little extra heart as well.

A rom-com will be great for the leads; I'm thinking its their forte...
medical dramas bore me to death but since its tvn I have SOME hope for them. I mean it has to be relatively good since they're doing a medical drama among the year OF medical dramas. :)

I've been waiting to see Ji Hyo do a rom-com. I just think she would excel in the genre given the opportunity. The cast is shaping up well, I honestly thought I'd only be keeping my eyes out for Man From The Stars & I Need Romance 3 but then this drama has come along and peeked my interest.

Yay! So far this drama is made up of actors I'm fond of. I loved Choi YeoJin in I Need Romance and have wanted to see more of her since then. I normally skip medical shows but it looks like I might have to give this one a try, especially since I just started Let's Eat and it's pretty fun. TvN rarely disappoints me.

Squee!!!! I've got a crush on Choi Jin Hyuk since I started watching The heirs!! I'm so happy he has the lead role in this. I am also fond of medical series like ER (good memories!!!) but haven't watched a Korean medical drama yet. Can't wait to see Choi Jin Hyuk Oppa as a doctor!!! and it's a TvN drama so for me it means it's likely good!! They've been broadcasting good stuff, Reply 1997, Potato Star, Let's Eat...
