The Princess’s Man PD returns with new sageuk for KBS

While MBC is over there having their programming kerfuffle with their 2014 banner sageuks, KBS has gotten some ducks in a row this year, and is already programming into June. This summer will mark the return of PD Kim Jung-min of the hit 2011 Joseon’s-Romeo-and-Juliet sageuk romance The Princess’s Man, in a new project called The Joseon Gunman. So I guess that puts us in late Joseon then. Points for a rollicking title.

It’ll be KBS’s next-next-next Wednesday-Thursday drama, after Age of Feeling and Golden Cross. It’s being planned as a 20-episode series to air this summer, and casting is currently underway for the leads. The drama will be set in the bloom of 19th-century Joseon, and centers around the son of Joseon’s greatest swordsman. He loses his father and sister (hey that happens in Golden Cross too) and as he sets out to avenge their deaths, he throws away the sword and picks up a gun, becoming the Joseon Gunman.

It’s described as a drama that depicts “the youth of that era and their pain and courage.” It sounds like a fun action-adventure series (it’s good to know there’ll be swords AND guns), and what I hope is that it’s also an epically badass hero’s tale. Between pirates and bandits and gunmen, summer is definitely the season I’m looking forward to this year.

The Joseon Gunman will premiere in June.

Tell me about it. Nowadays they're making such lousy sageuks. Princess's Man was one of the best, besides Chumong and Immortal Yi Soon Shin. Nothing else had moved me much. Ever.

Princess Man is still the best drama ever. In a way it ruined every other drama for me, because I kept comparing them to the awesomeness of Princess Man. Please cast good leads, and I am so in for this.

LOL. I know what you mean.
Recently, I watched The Kingdom of the Wind. Until then, The Princess's Man was No. 1.
It's very different, so I'd say both dramas share first place.
(Tissue-wise, Kingdom of the Wind takes No. 1 ^_^)

Ooo. Me too! I also like Dong Yi. I think I have something for strong female leads in sagueks. Huh, now that I think about it, it's odd how there's recently been a plethora of strong female leads in a time when women had less rights especially since the female leads in contemporary dramas... leave a little to be desired in terms of badass-ness.

Same here. The Princess' Man was among the first saeguks I ever watched and is still the best. Nothing came even close. Not Queen Seun Doek, not Deep Rooted Tree, not TMTETS.

Looking forward to the new project.

I agree. I meant I felt drawn to it, could hardly wait to get to the end (and at the same time, didn't want it to end), and, most importantly- thought it was worth watching again.
Tree with Deep Roots, for example, was really amazing and well done, but I wouldn't watch it again- too sad for me.

Arang and the Magistrate is also a favorite of mine.

The Princess Man is also the best saguek drama for me. Is there a possibility for the lead to be offered to Park Shi Hoo? I wonder if the PD will take the risk if that is a comeback project for him. I heard PSH is doing a chinese movie right now.

Required fields are marked *

Nope. That's impossible to hope of such things. He wasn't the PD's favorite and KBS won't allow it since Koreans (and I'm talking about the general public) hasn't forget about his scandal and totally against seeing him making his on screen comeback in Korea

Agreed, Lee Junki has the Joseon era down with everything from speech to looking amazing in Joseon attire. He does his own stunts and no one does fight scenes in sageuks like Jun-ki. He is such a joy to watch.
I was hoping he'd team up with writer Kim Young Hyun. He deserve a hit sageuk to match his talents.

I don't think I can formulate enough words to express how much I loved TPM. It's one of the best drama I've seen in years with everything about it being epic. Romance, friendship, family, action, such believable conflicts and most importantly - a story that's so flawless and flowing. But I was more taken by the acting and writing in that drama, even if the direction was so top notch in itself.

I'm looking forward to this a lot - I just hope they get some good leads and I'm so up for it no matter what. If only Song Joong-ki wasn't in military. Or Seung gi isn't doing that other police drama. Oh well, I just hope it's someone I like.

Completely agree!
It's still my favorite sageuk even if not the best of its genre..and that's because of the mesh of romance, action, and drama. The director/writing combo of that drama was so so great. The writing always kept me on edge, and the directing was so slick and gorgeous that it took my breath away.
I'm definitely checking out this sageuk. Already has a premise that sounds interesting and a director I became a fan of.

actor:
lee min ho(1993)
im si wan(but his baby face limit him)
kang ha neul(he got some charisma)
yeo jin goo( err..too young?)

actresses:
lee yoo bi
jung so min
lee se young(if people know she is the the child actress for dae jang geum...she is underrated)
park se young(she is awesome in faith)
park bo young(she is talented)

suprisingly we got more talented younger actress...

- Lee Yoo Bi (love her in Gu Family Book)

- Park Eun Bin (Queen Seon Deok, Gye Baek)

Required fields are marked *

The scandal of PSH has yet to subside. No matter how good his performance in TPM and no matter how good his working relationship with the director Kim there is no way that he'll likely be chosen as male lead. Any production unit will know that he is more of a liability than an asset. He can get back to dramaland but he had to wait for few years. If the director choose to work with an actor from his previous dramas, the actor likely to be chosen is MCW (if there is a female lead).

Woot woot. I hear Joo-won's name here. The role seems perfectly suit him, but I dunno, if he is in.. he will probably receive negative critics and comments.

Well, he received it a lot during his Gaksital days and most recent Good Doctor, but that makes him even more better day by day. So no doubt that he can nail his first sageuk. Just let the female lead to be the one who are experienced in Sageuk, so they work together well... Yes for Moon Chae-won. *Winks* or maybe Lee Youn-hee. As this is KBS drama, I have faith in their casting :-)

Part of me says that he will not be in this drama, his musical will ends in June and shortly after that filming for his other movie. And I want him to rest well. Ooof make sure you have time for drama puppy. Dramaland still need you!!

I want someone with some good track record but with more chance to shine, like Im Joo Hwan. Lee Jun Ki and Joo Won are busy enough as it is.

As for the female lead, I want someone with good delivery, not just a pretty face. I like Moon Chae Won and I think she is improving a lot, but something about her delivery of especially sageuk Korean always makes me think that she is having an acid reflux.

0
3

Required fields are marked *

That can't help much. She had some kind of mouth/tongue operation when she was a child that kind of impacted the speech. But with hardworks, hopefully can overcome or improve on this issue

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Kim Tae Hee and Han Ga In delivered their lines well in their previous sageuk dramas but overall their acting was bland.
Speech delivery,alone,is not a basis for casting an actor. There are factors that a production company need to consider such as;
An actors experience in sageuk drama. Only a few young actors have experience in sageuk dramas. Unless the actor will only appear in few episodes then a production company can choose any actor. But for major roles their is no way on earth that a production company will choose an actor with no experience in sageuk unless the actor is a big name, or the drama will be shown in cable channel or an idol actor supported by a major agency.
Another factor is an actor's ability to pull in the ratings.
Another factor is chemistry with co-stars.

I only had an issue with MCW's speech delivery in the first three episodes. I'm not even sure if it is really her sageuk speech delivery which is the problem since I didn't find that issue in Painter of the wind or War of Arrows.

More than the issue of casting actors, I want to know who wrote the script. Not even a well-established actors and brilliant performances can save a bad script.
