You From Another Star: Episode 18

This episode really made my day: So sweet, so heart-twisting, and so full of random hilarity to take the edge off the pain. That’s a recipe for a fantastic episode. More than the one-off jokes, though, I love that the comedy in this show functions narratively as well as to provide laughs, providing character moments and building bonds even as we’re giggling like fools over ridiculous E.T. jokes. (Which, by the way, had me rolling.)

SONG OF THE DAY

RECAP: EIGHTEENTH RECORD

On their overnight getaway, Song-yi frantically looks around for Min-joon, shouting his name and starting to panic. I’m guessing this is the moment he decides he isn’t leaving after all, and as he appears behind her, he tells her that he’ll stay. She throws herself into his arms in relief.

And then, we see Min-joon lying in the middle of an empty field, and his body starts to… disintegrate into particles? Fade out of being? Turn into light? OH NO.

It’s one of Min-joon’s visions that we’re seeing, and he reels at the sight while holding Song-yi. Ohhhhh crap. His visions have never failed him before, so this is NOT. GOOD. No, not good at all.

But he brushes aside Song-yi’s concerned reaction and suggests that they go somewhere else—a place with darkness, a roof, some walls, where they can be alone together. Ha, he’s reciting Yoon-jae’s all-men-are-wolves speech. Also, rawr. You’ll note that she is only too happy to oblige him.

Jae-kyung gets ambushed with a meeting featuring his ex-wife and the two investigators, set up by Hwi-kyung. The ex-wife (who has a name, but as Min-joo is awfully similar to Min-joon, I think we’ll do fine calling her ex-wife) glares at the man who kept her locked in a mental ward for seven years, but Jae-kyung feigns ignorance.

Wearing a blank face, he says that he thought she was abroad all these years, offering false concern over her mental instability. He tells his brother this must all be very shocking for him, then directs the investigators to talk to his lawyers.

Hwi-kyung isn’t about to let this go and follows his brother out, demanding a better response than his pretense of being clueless. Jae-kyung levels him with a furious glare and says he has nothing to do with anything, but his face betrays surprise when Hwi-kyung mentions their eldest brother as one of the people Jae-kyung has wronged.

Hwi-kyung says, “This was the last step before I gave up on you. I wanted to give the brother I liked and respected a chance to explain—I wanted to understand even if I had to force myself. But I’ll give up completely now on you.” Furthermore, he will no longer call Jae-kyung hyung, using instead dangshin—a purposely distant way to address him—to say, “You are not my brother now.”

At the vacation house, Song-yi and Min-joon enter the bedroom, and while sharing that bed isn’t a hardship for either one, they go through the motions of saying they ought to use separate rooms. Hilariously it’s Song-yi who keeps shooting down reasonable alternatives: For instance, Min-joon points out that there’s a second bedroom, and she says she can’t sleep in a cold room with a weak boiler. Min-joon offers to take that room, and she says that’s way too inconvenient, sighing, “We have no choice, given this tough fix.”

Min-joon mumbles that it’s not really a tough fix, but Song-yi overrides him to insist on sharing the room. She does instate a no-kissing rule, and he mutters, “I wasn’t going to anyway.” She notes pointedly that he’s blushing.

Song-yi puts his bluff to the test and lies down, patting the space next to her and snuggling up right away. She asks him to turn out the lights, saying that dating an alien has its perks, and Min-joon looks at the light intending to comply.

Only, it doesn’t work. Eeeek. He ends up turning it off the old-fashioned way, saying that he feels tired, then grumbles at her for being so forward. Song-yi just finds his crankypants grandpa ways adorable, as do we all.

Lawyer Jang arrives at Min-joon’s apartment wondering where he is, and sees the wilting plants inside. Min-joon watches Song-yi sleep and narrates for us that he’s realized that despite living for so long, it’s not actually the length of time that’s important so much as it’s the people you spend it with. So now, he will use up the rest of his days with Song-yi.

In the morning, Song-yi wakes up to find Min-joon smiling down at her and asks for a second go at his levitation powers, since she was too surprised to enjoy them the first time. Min-joon focuses his energies to oblige her, only to have them fail again, which admittedly I would be more worried about if it didn’t make me laugh so hard to watch Song-yi lie back expectantly asking, “Are you doing it?” To cover his embarrassment, Min-joon suggests that she weighs too much, and she retorts that he managed fine before.

Min-joon gathers his energy to give it one more try, and Song-yi sloooowly starts to lift into the air… but after a few inches, she flops back down onto bed. “Is that it?” she asks, disappointed. “You can’t do more?”

Min-joon says defensively that his powers are low because he just woke up. Song-yi pats him reassuringly, telling him not to let it get his, um, impotence get him too down.

Min-joon cooks breakfast for Song-yi, and she wraps her arms around him and asks if there’s anything she can do to help regain his powers. Reference to his failed prowess puts him on edge again and he barks that he did lift her, only to have Song-yi say, “But it was so short, and it looked so hard for you.” Dying laughing.

He makes another I was just tired excuse and Song-yi assures him there’s no need to get upset. Hee.

As they arrive in their building, Mom steps out and starts in on the scolding—Song-yi was out all night. Was she with him? Lawyer Jang steps into the hallway in time to hear Mom start in on Min-joon, then jumps in to defend his pal.

Mom huffs at Min-joon, “Are you going to marry Song-yi? Why no response? Did you go away together without having any of those intentions?”

She warns Lawyer Jang to keep his “son” in line, and Lawyer Jang retorts that Min-joon was an innocent young man who’d never dated a woman before (which makes Song-yi smile), then accuses Song-yi of being the fox to seduce him. Mom snaps at her daughter, “Did you seduce him?” Song-yi thinks it over, conceding that she did actually.

Min-joon speaks up to say it takes two to tango, and that he understands Mom for blaming him. It’s hilarious to hear Min-joon speaking in the utmost formal terms, as befits his old-fogey personality, and in her confusion at his antiquated vocabulary, Mom almost forgets to be upset.

Min-joon explains to Lawyer Jang of his decision to stay, and Lawyer Jang takes the philosophical approach, saying that everybody dies sometime. But when he asks about Min-joon’s physical condition, Min-joon decides not to share that his powers are failing, not wanting to worry him.

That night, Min-joon tests his powers and tries to summon a mug, which stays put where it is. “Is it too far away?” he wonders. So he sets it a little closer to help it along, then gives it a second try, which also fails. “Is it too heavy?” he asks… and replaces it with a paper cup. HA, and aw. At least he does manage to move that tiny paper cup, even if it’s really just a few inches.

Next, he tests his time-freezing skills and looks pleased when the clock pendulum freezes in place—and then starts swinging mere seconds later. This is getting really unnerving…

At least his hearing is still good, because he hears Song-yi calling his name from her bedroom. Bursting with aegyo playfulness, she says that she misses him already: “Can you teleport in front of me? Hmm?” As she’s wheedling to a seemingly empty room, her mother and brother poke their heads into the room and wonder if she’s lost her mind.

Min-joon texts that he’ll be right there, and prepares to teleport to her room. It doesn’t work, so he tries harder at attempt number two, which at least yields a successful exit… but he fumbles the dismount, landing himself in the middle of a busy crosswalk. He barely avoids getting hit by passing cars, then takes a call from Song-yi to say he won’t be able to make it.

Hwi-kyung comes home to an irate father, who delivers a mighty slap to his face for calling the authorities on Jae-kyung. Hwi-kyung says that his brother had locked up the ex-wife for seven years against her will, but Chairman Dad snaps that she was just a toy given to amuse Jae-kyung, and must have done something to deserve Jae-kyung’s actions. Wow. That’s… wow.

I give Hwi-kyung major props for standing with his convictions, and he says he had to do it to know what kind of person his brother was. But his father thinks differently, and orders him out of the house: “Jae-kyung is the only son I have.” Good riddance to this crazy family, I say.

By now Jae-kyung has called his attorney to his side, which stonewalls the investigation. The attorney presents hospital records outlining the ex-wife’s history of instability; they’re likely falsified, but there’s no proof of that. Detective Park has a psych evaluation from yesterday that declares the ex-wife perfectly sane, but Jae-kyung takes care to distance himself from the entire hospital issue, saying that he has nothing to do with it.

To that, Seok presents phone records of numerous calls made from the ex-wife at the mental hospital to Jae-kyung, but he says he assumed they were prank calls. So now the situation has hit a he-said-she-said standstill, and Seok requests a cross-examination. Jae-kyung agrees, but judging from his smirk, he and his attorney are confident they’ve got a way out of this.

Seok doesn’t disclose where the ex-wife is staying, though we see that she’s been taken to his home, where Se-mi and her mother wonder at the unusual guest. They both recognize the woman as Jae-kyung’s ex, and Se-mi accepts the explanation that they’re just helping to house the witness who’d been unjustly locked up.

Hwi-kyung heads to the river to brood, and in a flashback we meet his eldest brother (cameo by Yeon Woo-jin). Hyung gives his Hwi-kyung a pen-recorder as a graduation gift, encouraging him to use it as a diary like he does, and congratulates him with an affectionate hand- (and butt-)shake.

The next morning, Min-joon wakes up in bed and tests out his powers on the bedspread, feeling mightily relieved when the cover whisks away. He calls Song-yi to suggest breakfast together, wanting to show her more of his skills, only to have her say she’s out with a friend and hang up on him quickly.

That’s because she’s out trying on bridal gowns with Bok-ja, who wonders if she’s jumping the gun again. Song-yi says that he gave up having to go far away for her sake, so really, they’re on the same page. Bok-ja asks if he just gave in because she whined and cried and pouted about breaking up. Song-yi thinks back to all the times she asked him to stay, and sobers up a little at Bok-ja’s admonitions to wait to get the guy’s agreement before running off to try on bridal gowns.

Jumping the gun runs in the family, apparently, because Yoon-jae heads next door to offer Min-joon his approval, already working on the issue of persuading Mom into acceptance. Aw, his methods are adorably immature: “I think if I write a contract promising not to run away from senior year onward, it’ll work.”

Min-joon has to ask what exactly he’s trying to get approval for, and gapes to hear Yoon-jae’s response: “Your wedding.” LOL. Yoon-jae just asks that Min-joon make Song-yi happy for the rest of her life, since she’s gone through a lot, and declares, “I approve!” Min-joon mutters to himself, “And I wondered why Song-yi always talked without listening. You guys sure are similar…”

Declaring that there’s one more person Min-joon should meet, Yoon-jae leads him to make his acquaintance with Dad. They arrive just as a rich jerk pulls up in his car and orders Dad to park his car, which isn’t Dad’s job. The jerk threatens to have him fired, and just as Yoon-jae darts forward to step in, Min-joon uses his powers to make the car screech forward of its own accord—like a car possessed, it backs up and revs threateningly at the jerk owner.

Min-joon steps in and tells the guy, “If you have so little ability to park your own car, maybe you should rethink driving.” Booyah. The jerk starts to shoot off his mouth, but doesn’t get very far because his tires suddenly pop, all at once.

Over lunch, Dad recognizes Min-joon from their elevator encounter at the hospital. Dad acknowledges that he isn’t in the position to play the Dad role, but has only one question: Is Min-joon healthy? He’s relieved to hear Min-joon’s yes, because he’s learned that health is truly important—it’s what enables you to protect those you love.

Yoon-jae listens silently but attentively as Dad says, “I didn’t know that then. I lost my money and my honor fell to the ground, and I thought I wouldn’t be able to protect my people. I was foolish. I should have stayed with them anyway, and there’s no way I can make up for that lost time now. No matter what happens in life, if only you can stay with Song-yi, I will be grateful. What I couldn’t do, you do it.” Oof, talk about pressure. And all the while, Yoon-jae sits there trying not to be moved, though I’d say it’s a losing battle.

Min-joon has a few drinks with Dad, which means that on the walk home with Yoon-jae, he’s pretty tipsy. Seeing a phone booth, he exclaims, “We’re home already!” and shoves Yoon-jae in first. Seconds later they disappear from the booth and flop onto Song-yi’s couch, and Min-joon chuckles goofily to himself the whole time. I love drunk Min-joon so much.

Yoon-jae tries to make sense of this, just as Min-joon summons a bottle of water to his hand. As he tries to process the sight, Song-yi comes out to see Min-joon drunk and starts to drag him by the arm, grumbling at him for being out of touch all day.

Yoon-jae leaps up and orders noona to stop, because “Our Min-joonie hyung isn’t someone you can treat like that!” Aw, he gets protective and warns, “Don’t ask any more. I won’t answer.” Then he gathers up Min-joon into his arms and princess-carries him to a bed. (That is adorable. Did this actually heighten star-lover Yoon-jae’s hero worship even more?)

Some time later, Min-joon wakes up with a headache and realizes all the ways he’d outed himself to Yoon-jae. When Yoon-jae drops by, he starts to make an explanation, only to have Yoon-jae shush him and whisper, “I’ll keep your secret. I promise!”

Min-joon thanks him, and Yoon-jae asks for just one favor—and then extends his finger, E.T.-style. This episode is just cracking me up. Min-joon tries to protest that he’s not what Yoon-jae’s thinking, but Yoon-jae gives him the puppy dog eyes and whimper, and reluctantly Min-joon reaches out his finger to make the E.T. touch. THIS IS MY FAVORITE THING EVER.

Song-yi cooks for Min-joon and hovers expectantly while he tastes it. “Don’t cook soup again,” he says. Ha.

Song-yi is clearly angling for something, and she starts by mentioning her very high utilities, which drive up her living costs. Ha, is that how she’s going to try to sneak into the cohabitation argument? Min-joon asks if she needs money, and she tries again by saying that they’re neighbors who eat together often, so doesn’t this make their utilities a waste? He can see she’s working up to something but has no idea what, but she drops it rather than spell it out for him.

She cheers up right away when he suggest going to Namsan Tower for dinner, which was on her list of date ideas. She tells him to dress nice, and he heads out to buy a new suit, which is adorable.

Hwi-kyung drops by to talk to the ex-wife, and looks chastened to run into Se-mi, since he’s imposing on her. She waves it off, though, telling him not to worry.

The ex-wife admits that even while married to Jae-kyung, she always felt something was strange about him, as though he were hiding something. And then one day she found something she shouldn’t have—a voice pen in hyung’s room—and got scared. She realizes now that she should have gone to the police, but at least managed to take the pen without Jae-kyung ever knowing it existed.

So Hwi-kyung retrieves that pen from its longtime hiding place, claiming it from the pawn shop that the ex-wife took it to, and settles in for a harrowing listen.

The recording starts out with hyung relating his day, from buying Hwi-kyung a graduation gift to agreeing to go on a drive with Jae-kyung later. Then Hwi-kyung drops by with some juice, sent by Jae-kyung, and by the time Jae-kyung enters the room, hyung is gasping and woozy.

Jae-kyung gives him the same, cold speech he’d given Yura—that it’s not drunkenness he’s feeling but gradual paralysis. He admits openly that he’d long wanted hyung out of the picture, and that hyung will be discovered dead in his car tomorrow. Shudders.

Hwi-kyung listens to his brother begging for help, overcome with emotion.

Song-yi and Min-joon head out for their date, and he asks her to open the car trunk. She guesses a surprise is in order and looks expectantly… and then grimaces when she sees that he just wants her to hand her the mop inside so he can wipe the window. Hehe.

At the top of the tower, Song-yi fastens their couple lock to the fence with all the others, then hands him the key to throw away, symbolizing a forever bond. She exults, “Now I’ve got you.” Next is a romantic dinner, and Song-yi perks up when a waiter wheels in a huge bouquet of roses, expecting them to come to her. Min-joon looks on blankly as Song-yi watches the woman one table over get everything on her romantic wish list, including the diamond ring hidden in food.

Mood broken, she sits back in disappointment and tells Min-joon to hurry up so they can leave. On the drive home, he asks if she’s upset about anything, and she snaps that there isn’t. He starts to say something, but an important phone call interrupts and he drops her off at home. But he softens the blow by telling her to wait for him at his place. He promises to be back soon, saying he has something to tell her.

Song-yi settles in to wait, and finds his journal again. She reads as he describes meeting her, which starts out with descriptions of her obnoxiousness but transition to someone he can’t bear to leave. These are words we’ve all heard before in his interviews, and Song-yi smiles to think back to their earlier encounters… until she comes to the passage where he supposes that not returning home could lead to his death.

Realizing he lied to her when he said he could stay, Song-yi reels. She starts to sob, clutching the journal to herself.

EPILOGUE

Min-joon shops for his date outfit, and when asked by the saleswoman what the occasion is, he answers, “I’m proposing.”

This he follows up with ring shopping, and then a series of failed run-throughs at home as he tries to hit upon the right way to propose. Attempts range from calling her Song-yi-ya earnestly to tossing the ring over and saying carelessly, “Wear it.”

Then when he asked her to open the trunk, we see him suffer last-minute doubts and stop time just before she can see the loads of red balloons and the “I love you” poster loaded inside, awwww.

Last but not least, he toys with the ring box at dinner, thinking over the words from his rehearsed proposal: “I don’t know how long I can live by your side. So it may be that I shouldn’t say these words. But I’ll do my best to stay with you a long, long time. I don’t know how much that time will be, but I’ll do my best in loving you.”

COMMENTS

Aieeee, lots of good stuff today. I was hoping against hope that we had all just assumed that Min-joon would get sick and die, and that maybe we’d all (including Min-joon) interpreted the signs incorrectly and that he wouldn’t die if he stayed. Maybe his alien powers would die and what remained (ostensibly his human body) would be able to start ticking along like a regular person. But that vision he had sort of puts the nail in the coffin of my hope, because damn if that isn’t a full-on death/disappearance/evaporation scenario we’re dealing with.

And while we could laugh at the comedic bent to his loss of powers today, that sense of humor sure as heck isn’t going to outlive Min-joon’s death. I was pretty uneasy even today, laughing at his amusingly deadpan reactions to his unreliable powers, because the deterioration seems to be amping up at a rate I’m really not comfortable with. Not that I’d be comfortable with him dying an unnaturally speedy death in any case, but we can’t even console ourselves with the idea that he could still have a few great years with Song-yi. In cancer drama terms, we’re talking more along the lines of 90 Days, Time to Love, not the interminably long deterioration process of Thousand Day Promise.

On the darker end of things, I love Hwi-kyung’s arc and how he’s dealing with the investigation’s discoveries. At first I thought the Yeon Woo-jin cameo was to portray Jae-kyung’s formerly warm relationship with Hwi-kyung, but seeing him as the trusting eldest brother hammered in what a loss that was for Hwi-kyung (yes, Yeon Woo-jin has played killers before, but I see his face and attribute to him immediate warmth and pathos).

The cop-prosecutor duo has always been a bit bumbling for me to care what they do, but Hwi-kyung (or Park Hae-jin, really) is really selling his character’s heartbreak and disillusionment, not only with his brother but also his father, who seems mad shady as well. (I do wonder if Dad is merely in fierce denial—hence his “she probably deserved it” reasoning—or if he’s been more complicit in Jae-kyung’s evils, aside from helping sweep them under the rug.)

That said, it’s pretty remarkable that an episode with that much foreboding was as full of heart-warming bonding and goofy comedy. The Yoon-jae hero worship has always tickled my fancy, but seeing him figure out that Min-joon was an alien, and then adore him even more? The E.T. moment killed me, especially considering how much pouting Yoon-jae had to do to get Min-joon to comply. Just the fact that he went along with the finger-touch despite clearly finding it mortifying made me love Min-joon even more. And yes, the sibling resemblance really is starting to shine through, isn’t it? I don’t know how Min-joon’s gonna get saved at this point, but now that we’ve got a bromance and a romance on the line, stakes just got higher. Make it happen, people!

My questions:

1-If MJ calls SY “Song-yi-ah,” (in the epilogue), couldn’t SY call him “oppa” or “Min-joon-ah?” (or would that be “Min-joon-ie?). A beanie told me last week that MJ wouldn’t allow it, and I’m just curious about that. 2-How could JK say that he had sent his wife away (to study), when he still had her passport? HK saw that in his room. Doesn’t HK remember that? 3-When MJ said, “This is a situation that is not so dire,” (in the bedroom), was he trying to psych himself up, because he was feeling nervous at the thought of being alone with SY on the bed? At 1st, I thought he was just making a statement. And MJ pulled SY on the bed once, so I didn’t see why he would be nervous. Maybe he just felt awkward? 4-Pros. Yoo took MJ (JK’s wife) to his house. Good, but is that legally OK? 5-Could Pros. Yoo interrogate JK? They were at the Police Station (so the other officers and bosses knew what Pros. Yoo was doing), and wasn’t Pros. Yoo taken off the case? Again, I was just being curious. 6-Did MJ know that SY was trying to bring up the marriage issue, when he was having breakfast at her place? At first, I thought he didn’t know, but then, when I saw the epilogue, I thought that maybe he did know what she was driving at. Besides, MJ is not dumb, which made me wonder if he was playing dumb, when she was beating around the bush. Then again, he is a guy, so maybe he really didn’t know. 7-Did anyone else thought that maybe SY had something to do with the boiler not working in the other room (LOL)? She was trying so hard to “sleep” with MJ, that I thought we were going to see her in the epilogue, messing with the boiler. But then again, that might be too complicated for her. 8-I also wondered why MJ pushed SY back abruptly, after their hug (on the deck). He had a look on his face, like something was bothering him or he suddenly thought of something.

I really loved the 1st scene, with SY desperately looking for MJ, and him looking at her reaction, after having been gone for a short time. I think he realized how much she would miss him, and that might have solidified his decision to stay with her, until he died. I really loved JJH in that scene. I have loved JJH’s acting in this drama, it’s just that some scenes really get to you. And MJ’s disappearance in the fields reminded me of RTP.

MJ is so cute, being awkward in intimate situations. And SY cracked me up, with how straightforward she was (and kind of bossy) when they were in the bedroom. For a Joseon guy like MJ, that was a little too much. I LOL at how SY was milking the advantages of dating an alien, how comfortable she was asking him to do things. I also LOL at Lawyer Jang embarrassing MJ in front of SY and SY’s mom, revealing that MJ had never dated before (let’s not even talk about doing the other things). I experienced 2nd hand embarrassment for MJ, and wondered, “Where is that hole in the ground when you need it?” I felt nervous when MJ’s powers were weakening, and relieved (momentarily) when they seemed to have come back. And when MJ used them with the car (YAY!), and then teleported to SY’s, I LOLed. That led to a very protective YJ, and to an ET moment. MJ’s face was priceless.

Other moments I loved: MJ meeting SY’s dad and the moving “speech” her dad gave, which brought YJ to tears and made MJ realize that he might want to propose to her. 2-The date to the NT, MJ rehearsing the proposal question, and being nervous about it.

I have a question too regarding Dangshin...isn't it the same word that Wan has been using to call SY in "I need romance 3". Per the subs, it can mean "You" or "Dear".

was it the same word?

Yes, that dangshin and this dangshin are the same word. This word is interesting, that (as many other Korean words) it can be interpreted in different ways. For instance, the way in which Wan uses it, he means it in the loving sense, like dear or honey. But in the way Hwi-kyung uses it, it is many levels colder and unfamiliar than the warm, familial or respectful "hyung". Dangshin is often used between strangers and sometimes enemies.

Isn't it interesting how a word can be so extreme in its meanings? :D

Hello princey808,

About this, "Isn’t it interesting how a word can be so extreme in its meanings?" Yes, it truly is. Thank you to Beng for asking that question, and thank you to you for answering this question. I had been puzzled as well, by the use of "dangshin," as I have heard it being used in a few Kdramas (this one, where HK addresses MJ by "dangshin," and then his brother. And in INR3 as Beng as mentioned, and I 1st noticed it in The King of dramas. The heroine kept addressing the hero that way, and that stayed with me.

on your 3rd question...i think its the way MJs heart beats when intimately closed with SY...remember their first long kiss, that SY challenge when he broke into fever and SY tried to lean closer to see if he's really sick, his heart beat almost sent his heart bursting :-)

Hello thislexisheart,

And thank you for your answer. I think that you and I both got the answer to my question wrong. I do remember the scene with the kiss (15 sec. kiss), but I didn't remember that when she got really close to him (when he was on the bed), his heart beat rose. I will have to pay attention to that when I rewatch the show. Based on what JB explained, it seems as if MJ said "this is a situation that is not so dire," referring to the fact that he COULD actually sleep in the other room (with a supposedly weaker boiler), and that them sleeping apart was not an impossible goal to achieve. Thing is, that was not what SY wanted, so she kept rejecting MJ's solutions (which were viable solutions, by the way).

I think that because I saw how nervous and how awkward MJ was in the bedroom, I assumed that MJ was actually encouraging himself (not to be nervous to be in bed with beautiful SY). Because, if you remember (and look closely), you will see that even when they were in bed, MJ still acted awkward and not fully comfortable. It must have been that he was that affected by SY' s close presence (that he couldn't fully relax). That I think, would be keeping in character for MJ.

And we continue to see how awkward and embarrassed MJ is, when we see him the next morning in the kitchen, when SY brings up his losing his powers issue. That conversation in the kitchen between MJ and SY looked painful for MJ, who was probably trying not to alarm SY, since she didn’t know how things work for him (for example, that he didn’t use to feel the cold, now he does, that his powers go in and out [work sometimes, and sometimes they don’t], etc…) and that those things are related to the numbered days or months he has left on earth.

MJ has only had that conversation with Lawyer Jang, and so he doesn’t want to make SY worry. I also think that because they went away to have a good time and rest, MJ didn’t want to bring up sad and worrisome topics during their getaway. I felt bad for MJ though. He did look quite uncomfortable. However, I also think that SY asked because she cared, and she was trying to be helpful. She should have been sensitive to MJ’s reaction however, and she should have dropped the topic. SY can be oblivious about things and people around her at times. She only thinks about MJ’s powers as fun, when they are actually related to his health and his stay on earth.

MJ has the same attitude, regarding his waning powers, when he sees Lawyer Jang again. Lawyer Jang is suspicious about MJ’s powers, because he sees that the plants are dying in MJ’s apartment. In the end however, MJ does not tell Lawyer Jang the truth because he doesn’t want him to worry (even though Lawyer Jang did ask MJ). And then we saw MJ try several exercises to see if his powers were fully back (moving the cup, stopping time, teleporting to see SY). When those exercises only briefly worked, I became worried for MJ. Did you notice that MJ sounded a little irritated when he said, “wait a bit” to SY? LOL. That was kind of funny.

Hello, Ivoire! Let me try to answer some of your questions..hehehe

1. SY calling MJ "oppa" or "Min Joon-ah" - we all know how MJ gets too grumpy regarding the use of banmal [informal language] when talking to him since he's like 400 years old already. I think this has been clear already to Song Yi as there were previous episodes in which MJ always stressed that he is older than her. But, it wouldn't be too bad that one day SY will call MJ "oppa". I would love to hear that! hahaha
2. Hmm, HK seeing JK wife's passport - yeah I've watched that scene as well. Hmm, maybe it will be revealed in the next episode??hehehe or it's like disregarded already since in this episode a stronger evidence [the recording pen] is found to put JK in jail..hehehe
3. As we all know, since MJ started having feelings towards SY he is also having a hard time controlling himself. I guess he said this just to put down SY in the scenario and to let her think that he isn't that much affected in them being together in one bedroom. But hey, the great amount of control in MJ is very clear even in the previous episodes.. *wink*
4. Hahaha, oh noes legal matters! Here I am not pretty sure if it's legal or not but I will go with it's NOT! Firstly, Pros. Seok was already off the case and keeping JK's wife in his house which is very much used in continuing the investigation is a NO-NO. Also, in legal matters if I am not mistaken, such what we call "state witness" is always kept in a safe house provided by the institution and not the prosecutor himself [in his own house]. or maybe it could be diff on Korea's law
5. Yes, Pros. Seok is really off the case but just like in the previous episode when the detective got worried of his action of continuing the investigation, Seok wants to finish his case till the end coz of his hunch that there's more to the case than a mere "suicide" or "homicide". I guess Pros. Seok's boss didn't know yet that he's still in the case and his subordinates are completely siding with him in this part..hehe
6. Hmm, MJ is a smart alien so I think he knew what SY is trying to bring up. And also, I think Yoon Jae "YOUR WEDDING!" stunt is alrady a give away to this one. He's just feigning ignorance which, you know, he kind of mastered already since SY is a gullible woman.. hehehe
7. Hahaha that would be hilarious if she really did something about the boiler! I had to laugh hard during the epilogue of episode 17 when I found out she wrote that script she had MJ to practice with her.. What can I say, she's a smart sly fox..hahaha

1- LOL I think it would be kind of weird if SY was to call MJ
"oppa" just because to every other person who doesn't know he's actually 400 years old, they would probably assume he's younger (since he looks younger). SY has occasionally dropped the "ssi' when calling his name (which I think is less formal way?)
2- The studying aboard thing is a lie (obviously) but since no body knows or has proof that JK has his ex's passport they can't exactly accuse him of lying. Though everything he says just sounds like utter BS to me... Multiple phone calls from his ex who he supposedly thinks is on the other side of the world and he assumes they were prank calls? yeah right
3- He says that because he knows that SY is making the situation sound more dire than it is (I suspect he knows she just wants to sleep with him)
6- SY wasn't trying to bring up marriage exactly, she was insinuating that they should live together (not necessarily marriage) but since he's all old fashioned and SY's family all wants them to get married... I think MJ really didn't know what SY was talking about... He's not exactly the type to play dumb, he's just so old fashioned he just doesn't get it when people speak in riddles XD He probably really did think she needed money since she's in a little bit of a money crisis and he definitely has more than enough money.
8- I'm assuming you're talking about the very beginning? He pushed her back because of the vision he saw of him disapearing, it probably shocked him (like all his other visions surprised him) more so because this vision actually involves HIS death and not SY's.

Hello owl,

"It’s like reading a second recap, Ivoire! So much to think about." And I hope you don't mind (reading a second recap) :-) Think of all the things you have learned while watching a drama. Yes you are entertained, but somehow, I like that I can justify how immersed I am when I look at how much I have learned in 11 weeks. Looking at the conversations our questions and comments generated over the airing of this drama, I would say, that's a lot. And the nice thing is that we can always come back and read them.

A very neat thing happened to me last Saturday: Anais had explained to me the ways parents are referred to in Korea, and how her sisters called her. I have a very young roommate I introduced Kdramas to, a month ago. She is from Germany, and she didn't know anything about them. She now loves YFAS, and she loves KSH and Taecyeon (whom she discovered through Dream High, which she watched, while waiting for the new episodes of YFAS).

Well, while having lunch together last Saturday, somehow the conversation became about Kdramas (she has now been watching Cinderella's Sister because of Taecyeon), and she was asking me about the use of "unni" and about how parents are called. I explained that to her, and while doing so, I silently thanked anais for taking the time to mention that to me in one of the posts she wrote, in answer to my many questions last week.
I was not arrogant when I was talking to my roommate about that. It is just that you never know how what we learn here can become useful later. Also, explaining what "unni" meant, and how it can be used, made me realize that I had actually understood what anais had so kindly explained to me (best way to know if one knows, is to explain to someone else, right?)

Now that roommate (who loves me more since I gave her the link of the Human Condition with TY, LOL) has been learning Hangul (she knows the letters) that she teaches to herself, and she has been teaching herself how to write in Hangul as well. We have talked about going to a Korean restaurant, and who knows what else we will do...

I might have created another addict, but as I told her, "you could be addicted to something worse." (she is in her late teens. She will turn twenty this year). She is originally from Turkey, and I told her that Korea has a special affection for Turkey, which I learned while reading "ask a Korean" (it's a blog), and which was hinted at in one of the episodes of the drama "The King 2 Hearts." My roommate is trying to figure out what it is. I told her that I would let her know once she finds the right info. (I would confirm that info, if it is accurate).

I just love it when I can apply and use what I am learning in my daily life. And to get someone else excited about Kdramas and Korean culture? That's the icing on the cake (and I am not even Korean :-) ). My roommate didn't know the 1st thing about Asian culture when I 1st met her (her own words) 8 months ago, and she had no interest in it. Now, she can write in Hangul (and I can't even do that yet). See what having an open and inquisitive mind (and attitude) can do? :-)

I won't apologize for the long post (again), and I will just assume that you didn't mind. It just makes my day when I play a small part in opening someone's eyes to a new world...

Oh hi, Ivoire. Of course I love reading your posts! How fun it must be to have a roommate to discuss all things Kdrama realted. I am jealous! I am quite impressed that she has already learned the Hangul alphabet. The first thing I worked on was relationship titles (hoobae, sunbae, ahjussi, ahjumma, oppa, oma, huung, unni, noona, etc.) and realizes that age and position (social, work, family) determine honorifics/formalities too. It's complicated.

I am driving 2 hrs one way with a friend to pick up a her sister from the airport tonight, so I won't get to see YFAS until tomorrow - feeling withdrawal pains! Last night I stayed up until 2 a.m. watching The Genius 2: Rulebreaker, ep 11 and also kpop clips to find a still for my next drawing (I did post Luhan on my facebook page which I finished yesterday).

Until next time, happy kdrama watching!

Hello again owl,

I hope you drove safely to your destination, and when I see you next here on DB, I will assume that you made it safely there and back. You know, I must be the only one, because even though I have enjoyed this drama, I am looking forward to it ending. It has been a long almost 3 months, probably because I have kind of lived through this drama, and I have been so immersed in it, asking questions, reading people's comments, thinking through it, talking about it in my emails with two beanies, with my roommate, etc... So you could probably understand why I feel like a student who can't wait for the end of the semester, and as soon as she takes her final exams (next week), she can breathe :-)

As I have mentioned in my previous comments, I don't regret it as I have learned a lot, and my questions and comments have benefited other beanies as well. The other thing is, I have been reading this page and page 2 of the comments, and I am not the only one who takes dramas seriously. So I don't feel bad any more about my long winded comments. Just scroll down, and you will see what I mean. Beanies come up with theories, explored themes, etc... I am telling you, this IS really like a virtual class, where we are all sharing our questions and thoughts on the drama and its episodes. I guess we are all interested in the same things (when it comes to dramas).

What is Genius 2? Is it a Kdrama? I am impressed with your drawings, you are so creative. I am answering your post in reverse, starting with your 2nd paragraph, and now I am going to answer paragraph 1.

Yes, my roommate has been impressive, and she seems to be diligent. It is so cute when she knocks on my door to show me the new things she has learned. She likes to call me "unni" now, and I call her "uri dongsaeng." She asked me what that meant, and I finally explained it to her yesterday (I wanted her to figure it out 1st). We have started to discuss honorifics, and why knowing someone's age is so important in Korea (whereas in the US, people usually do not want to tell their age).

If you think that is complicated (honorifics and social stratosphere in Korea), you should look into how to address family members. You will have a headache before you even start, it is that detailed. Have you seen this:
http://thetalkingcupboard.wordpress.com/2013/05/11/korean-family-and-kinship-terms/

It is very helpful, and yet it feels overwhelming, when you first look at it. I hope you will have a great weekend.

To comment on your first question, I think it's just kind of awkward for her to call him anything but by what she does now, because he's not really an "oppa" but he could literally be her great-great-great-great grandpa or something..and plus he looks younger than she.

for your second one, it's pretty obvious to everyone in the room that he's lying, so there's not really a point. they just want the sufficient evidence required to arresting him.

4-it's dramaland, what can i say?

5-yes, but that was a different case regarding HYR's death in actually being a murder. now he's investigating the illegal detainment of JK's former wife.

6-no, he really didn't know. he's not dumb, but he's very innocent. he wanted to propose to her not because she was hinting about it, but because he loves her.

7-I don't think the boiler was actually broken, she just needed a petty excuse to get him to sleep in the same room as her.

8-Is that when he envisioned his death? because if that's what you're talking about, then I suppose it was because the thought of him literally disappearing into thin air was rather shocking, lol.

hope this helps~

1-If MJ calls SY “Song-yi-ah,” (in the epilogue), couldn’t SY call him “oppa” or “Min-joon-ah?” (or would that be “Min-joon-ie?). A beanie told me last week that MJ wouldn’t allow it, and I’m just curious about that.

If MJ were to called SY, Songyi-yah (in the 2nd person), then of course she can use "oppa" or "Minjoon-ah," although he's older so the "Minjoon-ah" will sound a bit wrong.

The difference between "-(y)ah" and "ie" as endings
• "-(y)ah" is in 2nd person. It's the ending you'd use to address a person directly.
• "-ie" is in 3rd person. It's the ending you'd use to refer to the person as if the person weren't there or as if you were talking about that person to another person, although Koreans refer to themselves and others in 3rd person all the frigging time. When I immigrated to the U.S. and started learning English, I had to unlearn referencing myself in the 3rd person because people though I was very, very weird doing that.

I’m really glad Song-Yi finally found out that Min Joon could be dying. I feel like Min-Joon has sacrificed way too much for Song Yi’s sake and that it should be her turn to sacrifice for him. I mean he’s giving up his life, his powers, his world, his time – everything basically - and she’s way too oblivious about everything that I was starting to get frustrated with her even though I love her character to death.

I really hope Hui Kyeong doesn’t die, though I have the sinking suspicion that death would be the only way out for his character and his undying love for Song-Yi, which already breaks my heart. However, the Crazy Hyung line has gone a little overtime in my opinion, and I would rather they resolve this quickly. After a certain point it gets a little ridiculous when you have an alien hero who can practically stop the world from revolving around its axis.

On a different note, you guys should definitely watch Running Man (YFAS version) if you haven’t already – it’s hilarious!

Yeap I watched the RM episodr and it is so hilarious omg. They reenact the scenes with the same bgm but it is still so funny, not ay all touching like the drama. The production team implemented and executed the super powers, esp the time stop power really well! ^^

BTW, anyone notice there r more scenes on SY or MJ's dreams that are occuring on real life? Like the sitting on bed waking up the other scene, the cooking scene, the lying down together with MJ's hand over SY scenes. I think it is a positive direction that these sweet dreams will eventually ALL come true, including the SY is pregnant scene. (I hope)

Also, dramabeans missed out of the new weed in MJ's home. I think it is another positive sign that MJ will have a new life on earth. As in, relive as a human. He didn't really live for 400 yrs as a human. But i hope wiyh love, he could in future.

I don't think Hui Kyung will die. I think this realization will actually help him become the man to take over the company. He will expose that JK killed their older brother and HK will be the sole heir to the company.

And I hope YJ finds a way to save his hyung/hero DMJ. Since he's studied aliens too, he'll probably find some loophole so DMJ can be together with his noona.

Yoon Jae shined in this episode! I keep thinking about how nice it would have been if Do Min Joon met the Cheon siblings since the very beginning of his time on earth. They are so accepting and loving of him. Especially Yoon Jae, and the way he carried his precious Do Min Joon hyung to the bed ala prince charming. When they shared an ET moment, coupled with the theme song playing in the background, I was laughing so hard.

Me too! The ET scene was the best scene for me so far in this drama. I laughed so hard and so loud I think the neighbours 2 doors down heard me. I watched the episode again and the same thing happened. The ET theme song playing in the background was just genius!

One thing I did not at all enjoy this episode was MJ's loss of powers because I don't know what that forebodes. I saw the funny side of it but I could not laugh about it. Was KSH's acting a bit off or maybe I was just too worried about the reason why he lost it?

I LOVE Kim Soo Hyun's new song! I listened to it for the first time in the car on my way home. The song was just halfway through as I parked the car and I thought I'd just sit there and finish listening to it. I realised that about 4 seconds had passed after the song finished and I was still sitting there, not moving. The sadness he conveyed with that song got to me. I could not understand a single word but when I finally came back to myself, the first thing I said was, "That was so sad." Ahhh! Kim Soo-Hyun, you move me.

I love the fact that KSH has a new song but I hate the idea that he must be sooo tired with all the extra things he has to do besides filming the drama. Re: the ET moment
This picks up where they left off in Episode 8, where a drunk MJ rides his horse across the moon.

This episode, when they went into the phone booth, I thought they were going to play with the idea that YJ sees MJ as Superman. But it turns out they were just phoning home.

And I loved the subliminal layer they added to the ET scene. The way it was filmed said, once YJ found out MJ was an alien, being with him was a religious experience. Look up at the screen caps JB pulled of the ET scene. Seen (only) from YJ's perspective, MJ looks like an angel with feathery white wings and halo. And then when they do the finger touch, the shot approximates a reverse image of Michelangelo's "Creation of Adam". With MJ posed as God and YJ as Adam reaching out for God's touch. LOL

Re: brain hernia
They've woven in so many genres and elements from other dramas, maybe they'll include Gumiho-esque mythology that lets him live?

The vision MJ had of dissipating into a billion starry lights, was similar to Dramaland's typical fox bead/gumiho imagery.

Including the vision scene, there were a few things this episode that reminded me of gumiho dramas. There was SY assertively trying to lure him onto the bed (this kind of reminded me of MGIAG's "Let's mate" gag). Then in the hallway, lawyer Jang accused her of seducing him like a fox. And in a sense, her persuading him to stay on earth (which will kill him), is like her stealing his Qi. (In Korean lore, Gumihos are known for eating livers. The liver is the source of Qi in eastern medicine.)

By showing his loss of power and the dying plants, maybe the drama is laying the groundwork for a mythology wherein it's his Qi that's starting to deteriorate. This approximates what the drama has told us will kill him. From JB's recap of episode 11:
"Heo Jun has a concern, though, saying that the human body requires a balance of yin and yang to survive, and when one’s energy flows counter to the cosmos, pain will result. Because Min-joon’s energy does not belong here, sooner or later he will not be able to survive, and thus Heo Jun urges him to return home before that happens."

So where's the hope? In MGIAG the Sanshin grandma allowed MH to return and live as a girl. So maybe the ship returns and grants MJ a life as a mortal? Or, in Gu Family Book, WR dissipated into a billion blue lights. But that was just his gumiho essence. His body remained behind in a slumbering state. And he was able to be awakened by his one true love. Maybe MJ will receive the kiss of life from SY? After all, MJ was carried like a sleeping princess in this episode, maybe he'll be awakened like one too?

*hoping*

I love how far our Do Min Joon-shi has come from the grumpy pants he was in the first half of YFAS. Remember his cold and aloof personality? Now he’s not as guarded, and he’s smiling so much more. Smizing plentiful, too. Love changes ya. The warm and affectionate look Do Min Joon gave Cheon Song-Yi when he wakes her up in the morning at the villa speaks a thousand words on how smitten and in love he is with her. Who wouldn’t want to wake up to such a tender and loving gaze?

So now they’ve practically made uri alien’s dreams come true, all except for one that im sure we’re all thinking of in particular: baby alien. Make it happen! They’re already moving at the speed of light (knowing each other for 2 months, dating for 1 week, and already we’ve reached the proposal stage), so might as well go the whole nine yards before this show wraps up. I’m speaking on behalf of all the byuntaes over at soompi who have created various fantasies of the OTP making love.

Hi ilikemangos,

I have a few questions for you:

1-What do "Smizing," and "byuntaes" mean, please? (Did you maybe mean "smiling" when you typed "Smizing?")

2-On one of the threads for Inspiring Generation, you had explained to me that the younger cast in TMTETS had acted so much better than its adult cast. Was that across the board? Did that apply to KSH and JIW (them being less good than their younger counterparts?) I was curious about that, and I have not watched TMTETS yet. So I thought I would ask you, and this pertains to KSH, so I thought it would be OK to ask that here. I have been meaning to ask you that question for a while now.

Hi Ivoire, you always have so many questions, i love your curiosity!

1- Smizing is a term coined by supermodel Tyra Banks where she tells her models they need to smile with their eyes.

2- My memory is a bit fuzzy and im surprised you remembered but for me that was applied in particular to Han Ga In.

Hi again ilikemangos,
I just posted my response, which has some YT links, so my comment is awaiting moderation. Please check later to see if it has been cleared and posted. Thanks!

Hey ilikemangos,

I am glad you don't mind my curiosity, as SY would say, "it can't be helped," (really, it can't) :-)
Some Korean actors who are very good at smizing (though many of them are good, for sure), Cho Jung-Seok (in The King 2 Hearts, and in YATBLSS), Sung Joon and NGM in INR3, and Ryu Soo-Young in Ojakgyo Family (he says "I love you" with his eyes like it's nobody's business. I kid you not. I remember thinking "I want a husband like that).
Kdramas will mess you up, LOL... And I will leave you with this, which you might have seen:

1--YATBLSS (the 1st 3 mns or so are what I am referring to):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1Jxailu0yA

2-Another kiss, same drama (look at his face):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1Jxailu0yA

I just soooo love JJS. His face is so open, one can read him like a book, when he acts, and you feel like you can tell what he is thinking. For someone who does not understand Korean fully, I appreciate that.
And then, there are times of course, when the character should not be showing his/her emotions, like JK in this drama. And that's a different story, and I love how JK pulls it off here.

"K-dramas will mess you up"

No kidding. It's ruining my academic standing AND it's setting up unrealistic expectations. It was reported that a woman from china broke up with her boyfriend cause he wasn't as romantic as Do Min Joon. He wouldn't buy her chicken and beer at 1 in the morning.

Jo Jung Seok is a good example of an actor like smiles with his eyes! Love him to bits.

0

Oh noes ilikemangos,

I really hope that you will get your academic standing back. About this, "it’s setting up unrealistic expectations," I am so happy I am not dating right now. I get to have (and enjoy) my freedom, and I don't have to get mad or frustrated, or just pissed at someone because he is not romantic enough. Between Sweet Potato in INR3m and MJ here (and HK), who we get to see every week (all three), coming back to earth (in terms of choosing a boyfriend) could seem like a daunting task. Would it be to much to ask that said (potential) boyfriend be fond of Kdramas as well? I would be good for the rest of the year, if I got someone like that (methinks).

Honestly though, I am often surprised and impressed with how Korean writers know how to write romance in their dramas. The many (creative) simple gestures, the different celebrations, the smizing, the platonic bed scenes, etc... that remind us of what it feels like to not only date (though sometimes, the couples don't date right away), but to actually be courted, which I personally appreciate. I love that sense of being wooed, even though we also get the "wrist grab" (argh!!!!!), the force kissing (hate it), and a few other things that makes us go, "you called that loving her?" (pulls hair).

We also get to appreciate dramas more than movies because dramas (if well done), have the opportunity to develop the story and flesh it out (case in point, this drama). And dramas eventually end, so we have closure, and we don't have to (usually) wait for the summer to be over, and then be able to watch season 2 and then 3, etc...

The story about the woman in China is sad, and yet, that sounds like an excuse to me. Her boyfriend is not MJ. At least, he could kiss her and not faint, and there was no fear of him disintegrating. Sounds like she didn't think of that. Maybe she didn't want to be in the relationship anymore, tbh. At the same time though, that story is also funny. how many guys go out at 1am to buy chicken and beer for their girlfriend/wife? Just wondering...

I am glad you like/love JJS. He is really a great actor.

These days I'm more curious about 'Ivoire' than I am of Do min joon sshi's origin.I would like to meet her in person to know the kind of person she is,is she the very serious type or the 'jokey' type

Hello Laden,

You just made my day :-)! You are curious about me? Awwwww... If I may ask, what brought that on? And you are actually more curious about me, than you are about DMJ-shi? WOW!!!! :-)

Your curiosity is all pardoned, as I am a very curious person myself, so I totally understand. I think it would be so interesting if we could meet some of the beanies, and be able to put some faces behind our screen names. Thing is, we all live in different parts of the world, and that would be a little difficult to accomplish, wouldn't it?

With me, what you see is what you get. I am usually a serious person, in that I take what I do seriously: my work, my interests, etc... and that is shown in my posts in recaps week after week. I try to stay polite and civil in my exchanges with people, and I hope that it is reflected in the conversations I have had here. I love children (I work with them), and yes, I do have a soft heart. I speak a few foreign languages and I really love languages, which should also explain my many questions about language in Kdramas. I am also warm and caring.

I am inquisitive, I pay attention to details, yet I can also be fun and I love to laugh. I do love being exposed to different cultures, and I am well traveled. I have friends from different parts of the world, and I have had a richer life experience as a result. I care about family, I love to read, and of course, I love Kdramas, and I love music too.

What about you? What are you like? Serious? Jokey? What do you like? Not like? I am glad you are still interested in DMJ-shi's origins though :-) , even if it is less so than in me.

Btw Laden, I just visited your page, which I found to be interesting...

Aww thanks for checking out my site,I'm happy you find it interesting
Its really nice to meet you
Well I guess I'm me,I'm the playful type layered underneath with seriousness.I present a fun Outlook but I'm a bit serious that is when I want to be.I don't take myself too seriously I love learning about foreign cultures and languages hence my infatuation with korean dramas b4 korean dramas it was indian dramas(lest I forget to mention I'm african)and I write a bit of hangul and I can read it a bit too, came across kdramas last year may and dramabeans around august(lol people look at me weirdly when I listen to korean songs and when I speak korean).I'm currently in the university studying quantity surveying.I hope to travel and see the world and meet a whole lot of people and oh I like to design stuffs too,I designed a header for dramabeans but I've not gotten it across to them.you can check it out if you want:

@Ivoire
What made me curious about you?
I guess its because of the detailed questions you ask and the fact that you write it all down and make sure you get them answered,I like your tenacity
I notice most of the things you point out but I just look past them knowing I'll probably find out what they mean later
I started noticing your posts during 'the heirs' recaps at first I found it weird but later I got used to it,now i actually even look forward to your posts cause I learn from them eg today I learnt 'byuntae' meant pervert'.I even recognize your posts now before checking out the name on top same goes for some beanies like owl, pogo, maidemoselle(I'm sure I got that wrong)who uses awesome smileys

0

Hello again Laden~

So nice to read/hear from you again. I would just like to say in passing that I find it interesting that you asked me about who I was, and yet, when I asked you, you didn't tell me anything about yourself. Was that done on purpose?

Yes, I do ask detailed questions. In fact, what I do is write my questions down, and post them, literally putting them out there, and seeing who will be kind enough to respond. I don't "make sure I get them answered," since I can't make people write their answer, can I? :-)

I think I do get what you mean though. I do make sure that I post my questions, even though I often wonder if I am going to be laughed at, because my questions are so detailed, and so basic/simple at times. You read the comments on Heirs, and so you know that I used to not always be treated kindly because of that. Some people were genuinely curious about why I wrote so much, while others were irritated by my posts, as if they always had to read them, which they didn't. That was hurtful, however, I can't control or tell people what to post (just like they can't tell me what to write and post either). I have been encouraged by the fact that some beanies actually do learn from my questions and comments, so it is worth it for me to do that, I think.

About this, "I like your tenacity. I notice most of the things you point out but I just look past them knowing I’ll probably find out what they mean later"
A beanie called me "dogged" last week (in her response), and I had to look the word up, because I was not sure what the word meant. She also called me, "enthusiastic and curiosity." She said that she was "just astounded by my doggedness and my meticulousness." And I took what she said as compliments (I think she meant them in that way). Unlike you, I don't believe that I will "get it later," or necessarily "find out later what they mean," so I would rather ask, which I do.

I guess I have become passionate about Kdramas, and I am very enthusiastic about what I learn when I watch them. I think that because I do not speak the language, I tend to pay attention to a lot of things, because I am trying to "read" what is going on. Actually, I think I do that with anything I watch to be honest, I just love details. I really do. I like to understand everything, when I watch something. I was the same way as a child and a teenager. And if other people can benefit from it, then great. I also do think that I am intentional when I watch kdramas. I purposefully want to learn new things, and I want to build on what I have learned in other dramas. So, I think my mind and eyes look for the details, because my heart and intentions are already there. I hope I am making sense.

I think I am tenacious, because I like to finish what I start, whatever it is I am doing (even if I am just cleaning the kitchen), and I like to do it well. I also tend to forget things, so I like to write them down. I also simply LOVE to write, so to me, any excuse to write is a good one, LOL (so when I watch episodes of dramas, it takes me a long time, because I am constantly pausing to take notes, again, writing my thoughts down. It helps me to think through the drama, as a process).

I appreciate your honesty about finding my posts weird at first, and then being OK with them, and then (now) looking forward to them. I am glad that was what happened for you, and that you have been learning from me being inquisitive, and...

0

@Ivoire
Lol I did tell you about myself in my first reply but it took a long time before it was moderated so I'm guessing you saw the second reply first, you should check it out again.thanks

0

Hello Laden again~

Yes, you did tell me about yourself, and yes your response came AFTER I had posted mine. I looked at your headers, and they are nice. The 2nd one (I think, where there is a lot of blue and white and it looks kind of blurry) wasn't as clear to me. I hope that you have approached JB or GF about your headers, and if you have, I hope that you will hear from them.

It has been nice to "meet" you as well, Laden. You know, I am African as well, and I grew up watching Indian movies, so we have those two things (at least) in common. (And we love Kdramas). I have watched a few Indian episodes (of a drama) online, however, those tend to be long, so I stopped. I thought they were very good. I liked the chemistry between the leads, and the constant breaking into songs, (LOL). An Indian actor once explained on the Oprah show that in Indian movies, the leads don't kiss, they just break into a song, to show and express their love. I agree with that. It has been interesting to see the evolution of the characters and of the themes touched upon in Indian movies, in the past 30 years or so.

Good for you for learning Hangul and learning to write it, and read it. I am not there yet, it feels and looks overwhelming to me. I am interested in doing so, however. I have a roommate I introduced Kdramas to a month ago, and she already knows Hangul and she can write using the characters. She has been teaching herself as well. And she loves 2PM.

I listen to Korean songs as well, and I speak it, a little bit. My sister was the 1st one to get into Kdramas. I didn't understand the interest in them, and then I watched PT (with LMH), and then I understood. This was 3 years ago. My interest (probably like you) went from kdramas to the Korean language and culture, and here we are -)

I have traveled quite a bit so far, and I do hope that you will get to do it as well. You seem to be quite creative, you should keep that up :-)

We can totally hope, christina :-) !

I am really hoping that this drama will end well, although if we have a bittersweet ending (MJ dying or disappearing), I guess that will be the melodramatic part of the drama (this drama falls under the comedy, melodrama, fantasy and romance genres). MJ would have lived some of his dreams (minus the baby part, if he dies in a few weeks).
I do have the feeling however that the writer knows what the viewers would like to see (happily ever after), and she has been good at letting us think one thing, and then giving us something different in the following episodes. So, we will see... I love that I am kept guessing till the very end. It makes this drama more engaging, don't you think?

I find it so hilarious how many people have been pointing out how red Kim Soo Hyun’s ears get whenever he has to act out an intimate scene (esp kissing ones) with Jeon Ji Hyun and then you hear Song-Yi asking him why his ears got so red in that bed scene. You can’t just act out red ears -- so i wonder if the writer is watching the show and gleefully pointing it out or it was an ad-lib by the cast who noticed KSH red ears and thought it funny to include that.Either KSH has an overactive sympathetic nervous system or his Ji Hyun noona makes him nervous by all that skinship.

Also, did you guys pick up on the sexual innuendo during their morning chat at the villa?
She started talking about his lack of performance in his abilities and how “there are times when you can and can’t”. Do min joon says “my body was tired”, “its uncomfortable, this conversation”. She brings up ginseng and deer antlers, both known to help with erectile dysfunction and improve sexual performance….Only in YFAS does the writer give us both meta and sexual euphemisms in one episode. This is part of the many reasons I love this show.

Well spotted. A hot bedroom scene would have been too clichéd. Their failure in ‘dovetailing’, grandpa style, is so hilariously acted, I believe, many of us were in stitches, as much as if not more when we watch the successful dovetailing of forefingers, E T style.

The sexual innuendos were hilarious. I was sniggering throughout the scene where he was preparing breakfast for both of them.

I think the lack of superpowers=impotence has been a running gag for the past few episodes. I found it so funny, how in the previous episode when he was unable to teleport himself back home after landing in Songyi's room drunk, the camera focused on his curled up fists and... his crotch. Haha.

One more thing is it just me or did kSH look tired in this episode not just the alien tired thing but he looked really tired,he should get mOre rest cos I want his halogen bright eyes back.JJH really looked pretty this episode, she looks super pretty with her hair pulled back

I noticed that Min Joon regained his powers once he was far from Chun Song-Yi(she was out with BokJa). I wonder if that means anything, ‘cause i really hope this writer doesn’t pull a Hancock where the hero’s powers were considerably weakened whenever he was closer to his soulmate, so the two had to leave each other and distance themselves from each other in order for both to regain their health and powers. I don't think that'll be the case here -- i think it's the reverse -- as in he needs to stay by her side in order to survive whatever doom he meets in the next episodes.

Javabeans, what you said describes my feels exactly the way they are! I was hoping and praying that Min Joon "dying" only means that his "alien self" will die making him live like a normal human being and be with Song Yi forever. With that vision though, I don't know what to think anymore. Heartbreaks all over the place!

I feel the same way about the scenes where we see his powers not working. I was laughing but deep inside I'm not. 내가 웃는게 웃는게 아니야~ Those scenes only tell us that there's not much time left. :(

Hui Kyeong's scenes were also very heartbreaking. It's already painful knowing he lost a brothe
r he really likes but seeing that close relationship they have makes it even more painful. Plus Yeon Woo Jin plays the role with so much warmth like how a hyung has to be. Really good cameo! I loved him in Arang and the Magistrate. It's really good to see him again.

I'm happy that this drama still delivers when it comes to humor. That Yoonjae ET scene, gosh I died laughing. Min Joon's face then was epic too. I'm laughign so hard again just thinking about it. Then there's Song Yi's creepy aegyo explosion. Her "Hajimaaaa~" was so funny! Parody of Oh Nami from Gag Concert. lol.

Still, we end with that sad scene. Song Yi must have felt guilty asking him to stay when the consequence would be him dying. Ahhh, just thinking about it breaks my heart into pieces.

Min Joon Halbae! Why do you keep on stopping time like that and not doing what you're supposed to do! Song Yi never got to see all those and were hurt every time you do that! Just get married and have a happy ending, please! I beg you!!!!

Thanks so much for the recaps, javabeans! It's always something that I look forward to every Wednesday and Thursday.

I'm studiously trying to ignore the impending doom we seem to be headed towards because I love Do Min Joon too much to think about it. Fierce denial? Yea I'm in that boat.

OMG that E.T. moment had me near tears. I love how he went went brooding angsty teen at the beginning of this show to this adorably innocent alien-princess-carrying "man"-child.

Love how the pov of the serial-killer bro plot now comes from HK's perspective. It makes it far more interesting. Today especially seeing how far back JK's murder count goes and how no one is safe-not even his brothers. (Which makes me think of Dexter now...)
I just find it mighty fascinating that although he's got a vast number of resources and a loyal minion to do his work, JK always does the actual killing which just seals him into serial killer territory vs. the sort of people that would have just hired hit men to do the dirty work. Nope this creep revels in the kills.

And finally canI just say I love Song-yi's bestie? She's so sweet and honest.

I know, I'm getting really really nervous here…if they give us a happy ending, I think this has got to be my favorite kdrama of all time. If it's the impending doom they've been hinting all along, I dunno…I might swear off kdrama for a while and rocking my knees in the corner.

I've been feeling insecure after the scene where Min Joon's body fading slowly in his vision. Even laughing at Yoon Jae with his finger thing has made me feeling guilty. Though feeling nervous every time MJ's power failed him, I really really hope his vision will also fail him this time.

Ugh the promise that he'll be back so wait a little.... Makes me anxious. But god this was a great episode. Second lead Hwi-kyung is really doing a great job character-wise and acting-wise. Been a long time Park Hae-Jin fan, and I'm glad this character does him justice.

And guys, lets all be honest, if you met an alien, the E.T. Finger Reenactment would be the first thing you'd want to do. I mean... That's what I would do...

Let me cry once more after reading the recap...

No he can't disappear. No way; the fact that he is disappearing is worse than dying the normal way. It's actually really cruel. Dying without a trace - it is too sad. No one would know where he went. What happened. He won't leave any signs.

This CAN'T be crueler than a cancer drama. NO.

I laughed...and then I wanted to worship the writer. She's doing a great job. She can keep in touch with humor in such moments. The ET part was cute, heck, everything was just cute.

Park Hae Jin is now in my list of crushes. He is doing such a great job. The thing that strikes me is that, in most of the stories, the male lead romances the girl, fights the evil and does everything, but here, fighting is done by the second lead. And this gives story a sense of balance.

And the plot develops really fast. I didn't think Song-yi would discover the truth so fast. It's all the better.

And are MJ's powers linked to the plant's health? If he doesn't water them and they wilt, his powers won't work? Something similar? Does it have a key to keep him alive on Earth. Let this woman hope. I can't tolerate seeing him disappear.

Min Joon, don't die. T_T
I really love this couple.

Why does this remind me of something about disappearing and saying "When you look at the stars, you'll hear me laughing."? Show, if you pull a Little Prince on us, I swear!!!

actually I agree about Park hae Jin and hwi kyung- evil brother sgtoryline is almost the more fascinating and nerve wrecking one now. I feel like throwing up from fear for him. I can´t even think. I feel so sorry and scared.

Hwi Kyung should not die. Jae Kyung should literally BURN alive or have the UFO land on top of him.
I am really sorry again towards the actor who plays him, nothing personal and I think you´re hot, but I want to tortute your character to death.

I was rewatching the first episode and DMJ said that he stopped interfering with humans because he learned that fate can't be changed. Whatever is mean to happen, eventually will.

He saved Seo Yi Hwa from falling off a clip and she ended up dying anyway. I wonder, should we be worried about CSY dying? God knows death has been coming for her since she was young and he's been saving her.

This is probably too much to add on to DMJ's impending (?) death but I wondered.

He's so sweet! Maybe he thought that it's best to not propose yet because he doesn't want SY to expect that he'll be able to stay with her for a very long time. It's heart-breaking at the same time. Oh, the thought of MJ dying, it breaks my heart too.

Thanks for the recap! So happy to get an OST song by KSH! Our wishes have been granted. ;) I <3 his vocals!

In the opening scene, we now see that MJ had been watching SY all the while as she called out to him again and again. I guess that's when he realized he simply can't leave her behind and it's worth risking his life. That premonition of him dissolving is unsettling. >...<;;

Can feel MJ's relief once he got his powers back the next morning. Too bad he couldn't show them off to SY right away. Keke~ SY looked beautiful in the gown. Glad BJ was there to talk some sense into her and make her reflect on the recent happenings.

YJ being so...

Tried to retype my thoughts again for the missing chunk... =)

In the opening scene, we now see that MJ had been watching SY all the while as she called out to him again and again. I guess that’s when he realized he simply can’t leave her behind and it’s worth risking his life. That premonition of him dissolving is unsettling. Please don't die, our dear alien. The part of repeating YJ's words about men was so funny and SY was all for it.

HK giving JK a chance to explain yet Jk chose to stick to his lies was heartbreaking. PHJ acted really well here. Totally felt the pain in his eyes. Love the flashbacks with elder bro later in the ep. with the handshake and butt-bumping. LOL Now that JK got his chance but didn't take it, HK is definitely gonna do everything he can, not only to bring justice to his sis-in-law, but more so for his elder bro with whom he had a close relationship. The recorder pen is such an awesome gift.

Trust SY to always be to one who wants to be close to MJ and ignoring the alternate choices. LOL So cute to see MJ being all shy and blushing, and not really that put off by SY's forwardness since I'm sure he doesn't mind all the cuddles. XD The powers not working is funny and sad at the same time as we know the reality of his body being weaker and weaker despite him attributing it to being tired and just waking up. Love how SY imitated his grandpa ways. So adorable!! In any case, I'm glad MJ has decided to spend his precious (remaining) days with SY.

The deterioration of the plants is another indication of MJ's condition and another cause for worry. =(

Love how MJ gaze so lovingly at SY the next morning. The levitation request was totally hilarious, especially when she felt so disappointed by the momentary lift. At least she's enthusiastic about dealing with his power issues. Haha...

The parent-parent spat was another funny interaction. Love SY's smile upon learning that she's MJ's first girl. ^^ But the ultimate is MJ speaking like a true grandpa and totally made SY's mom wonder about his age. That's what we wanna know! LOL

I like Lawyer Jang's philosophical take on MJ staying behind and eventually dying. It is much more comforting to MJ to support his decision now than to try to "knock sense" into him and push him to leave.

The whole MJ testing his powers scene was comical yet heartbreaking. He never thought things were too far or heavy before. Now, he had to settle with moving a mere empty paper cup. Funny but sad when thinking of the truth of what's going on.

SY's full-on aegyo blast mode was so over the top! Haha! If I were her mom and YJ, I'd totally think she's gone nuts. But poor MJ couldn't teleport over even if he wants to. Ending up on the crosswalk with one slipper intact was hilarious. XD

HK's dad's reasoning is completely twisted. =X Maybe that's why JK turned out this way. The way he treats HK might've been the way he used to treat JK when elder bro was around. He only cared about one son at a time and who will take over his business.

(continued)

YJ being so straightforward with MJ and giving his stamp of approval was so funny, especially since MJ was clueless what it was all about. But I love how YJ always has his noona's best interest in mind and tells MJ what a hard time SY had growing up. Siblings similarity FTW! I'm also happy YJ is acknowledging his dad and bringing MJ to get his approval as well. The moving car scene plus popping tires was icing on the cake. =P

Dad's speech really touched me. Not only cuz it is so true that health is the most important thing, but also how he's passing on his own duties to MJ. Definitely not an easy role to take on, but you can see how much Dad trusts MJ with this task. I'm sure YJ will patch things up with Dad soon as well.

I knew MJ drinking would lead to some hilarity (though I thought given his knowledge of what can happen when he drinks, he would've faked drinking and dumped the liquid somewhere). The whole YJ dragging MJ along and then MJ lighting up at the sight of the telephone booth was gold! And then the subsequent dropping into SY's home and fetching the water bottle. LOL I laughed so hard when YJ got all protective and thought SY didn't know a thing about MJ's powers, then proceeded to carry him like a little girl to SY's room. The whole ET moment set me off in stitches. XD (Kinda brings back memories of SY asking MJ about alien skin and blood.) Awww... Future bro-in-law loves YK and MJ is the most epic hero for YK, who just adores him all the more with his "alienness." Let the bromance blossom!

The breakfast scene with SY hinting at moving in together with MJ was so funny. JJH looks stunning and just glows in that blue flowered dress. "Don't make soup again!" Hahaha... I think MJ is just playing dumb at not understanding what she was getting at. XD So happy he suggested the Namsan Tower date! I've been there before and love it. MJ getting a new suit for the occasion is sweet. ZioZia endorsement, I see. *chuckles*

Totally felt HK's pain and how unbelievable everything must be with the truth of JK murdering elder bro crashing down. =( Must be especially hard hit cuz by bringing the juice, he indirectly caused the circumstances of the death and must feel so guilty about that.

SY looks beautiful for the date. I totally wished there was a surprise in the trunk, so I can really feel her disappointment when there was just a brush. He's her first guy after all, so romance is a must! The whole dinner was pretty mundane to SY and she just wanted to go home. =0 But MJ kinda made up for it when he dropped her off and asked her to go to "our home", which was sweet. I guess the urgent call might be from HK asking for help with the case? Guess we will find out tomorrow. I don't have a good feeling about him saying to SY he'll be back soon though. >.< I'm glad SY finally discovered the truth by reading MJ's journal. It was sweet to relive the past couple of months and for her to realize how MJ developed his feelings for her. But so sad to see her crying upon learning what can happen to MJ. =( Hope she will not try to stay away from him and waste time again... They should talk this out and reach a mutual agreement!

The epilogue was sweet, sad, and funny all combined. MJ is finally pursuing all he has dreamed about to be with SY by getting the ring and deciding to propose. Him tossing the ring and saying to wear it made me LOL! But when we see how he chickened out on his trunk surprise,...

The epilogue was sweet, sad, and funny all combined. MJ is finally pursuing all he has dreamed about to be with SY by getting the ring and deciding to propose. Him tossing the ring and saying to wear it made me LOL! But when we see how he chickened out on his trunk surprise, I really wish he hadn't backed out!! The balloons and "I love you" poster would've totally made SY's heart soar! He already knows he doesn't have much time left, so he needs to go all out and not hold back!! And then not being able to find the right moment at dinner to speak those heartfelt practiced words... It almost gives the viewer the sense that MJ just missed his one opportunity to propose to SY. Nooo!! I originally thought that MJ didn't know how to be romantic since he's never dated anyone. But then he had planned the trunk surprise, so he isn't clueless. Plus, he's been on Earth long enough to know how to court girls, even though his grandpa-ness might make him think it's silly. I thought if he had taken away the trunk surprise last minute, he would've at least gotten a bouquet of flowers for his proposal. =P

Anyway, only 3 ep's left! The chronicle is almost over! I'm planning to check out "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" from the local library as my next read. =)

This episode is probably the best episode up till now.

This show is wonderful at doing what it does.. Bringing in all those laughs and still being capable of tearing our hearts with the feels..

I laughed too hard at the E.T scene.. and was jumping just like Song Yi thinking he will be all out romantic on their date. The prologue just seals the deal. He has already taken the decision to stay so he should just hug her and spend his life happily..

Song Yi doing aegyo is pure epic.. Ji Hyun is an epic heroine.
The evaporation scene made me cry.. :(
I wish our Do Min Joon gets to live because if he doesnt then the writer would be really hated by us fans.
Song Yi and Min Joon are so awesome and sweet together..

I will swear off kdramas if this has a unhappy end.

. Yoon Jae ahhhah omg what a way to find out ah oh friggin...I can´t even! Losing breath from laughing. Pleaaaase stop I can´t anymore it hurts. IT HURTS!!!! Craaaaaazy OH GOSH boy and you call your mom crazy. Who´s crazy? Ah the whole family I guess. Ah omg Min Joon if you go and die or leave and abandon this adorable dongseng you really, I mean, women are tough, they can still survive but what about little brother? NOW you really can´t leave!!!!! ET ! ah omg Yoon Jae you are the cutest thing ever. Where do they sell little brothers like that? I want one!!! Though I am not that impressive nor alien... nor rich. But I have a submarine? Well, not mine, technically, but.... and I have a mayor for a friend! Still not impressed? *sigh* what to do.
Hwi-Kyung-ah....I am now more worried about you than Min Joon. Writer-nim, please keep this guy alive BUT give Jae Kyung a really terrible terrible ending! Like the evilest, grossest, most hardcore ending. I am sorry but I wish for the worst possible things. Burn and drop from a building. Or trap him in a UFO and send him off to space. YES! No....poor aliens.... cancel. Just send him off to space sans UFO and let him be crushed with a speeding comet. SPLATTER HORROR ENDING FOR JAE KYUNG I SAY. Sorry towards the actor, dont take it personally it is just the character
And then I watch Running Man....BANG! goddammit the YFAS intro what is this?

and worse than dying there are other possibilities.
1. body swapping. what if he ends up in Jae Kyungs´ body? oh my gowd. worst thing ever
2. Hwi kyungs´would be way too awkward.
3. well, Running Man got me seriously thinking about Song Yi possibly in danger, and to save her, Min Joon would send her off....but then why can´t they go together?
4. Lawyer Jang dragging Min Joon to the UFO and sending him off but he orbs back, lawyer Jang still on board among aliens.
5. the only way I am happy is Happy Ending with a twist. like he stays alive and they do get married but MJ gets drunk, wonders off Yoon Jae following and they orb off to Mojave desert...or to Hollywood.... Song Yi all irritated yelling MJ to come back right now! and he says I can´t I am in Hollywood. she curses at little brother for letting it happen and MJ says oh he is here too. well, something like this. or the scenario where their kids drive ever babysitter crazy.

I'm terrified that MJ will come back and propose to SY and that in an effort to save him, she will reject him and tell him that she has grown tired of him and that he should go back to his planet. >__<" I'm also terrified that maybe MJ won't come back because he'll start disappearing before he can make it back to her, because the way that they parted in the car just felt like something bad is going to happen to him and she's going to be left waiting and he won't come back. Either scenarios are dreadful!! Wahhh, I really hope that neither of my predictions/scenarios will come true. T_T

This was an amazing episode. This drama really has everything doesn't it? I love the mix of humor, mystery, romance, drama, comedy and how this drama just delivers everything so well.

From the first scene to the last scene, everything was beautifully shot and well executed. I know this drama is filming on an incredibly tight schedule, but goodness, it still continues to look mighty fine to me and I expect that the quality will keep up till the very end.

I loved that the first scene rewinded back the few moments where Min-joon was making his decision to stay. The look on his face as he was watching Song-yi was heartbreaking, and I love the way he spoke to her later. KSY has an amazing voice (singing too, but I am truly a fan of the way he delivers his lines).

The impotence jokes just cracked me up and made my day. I was sniggering throughout. Too funny!:D Although I was also really sad and alarmed to see the speed at which he was losing his powers. I was glad to see MIn-joon regaining his powers the next day, and him being drunk and using his powers in from of Yoon-jae was the best. I was dying with laughter when they were both just tossed upon Songyi's couch, only to have that topped by the ET scene afterwards.

Hwi-Kyung has really started to shine in the last leg of this drama. Park Hae-jin portrays him wonderfully. The anger and hurt on his face during his argument with Jae-kyung was really poignant. His sorrow and shock when he discovered his brother's pen was really well portrayed too.

I loved the epilogue. Totally Min-joon's style to do something incredibly romantic, then chicken out at the last minute. I loved his monologue during the epilogue and I really hope that he will be able to say that in person to Song-yi in the coming episode.

So many feels! *off to replay episode 18*

So agree meka... something lighted when i read this...

Since now, SY knows that DMJ might die if he doesn't go back to where he came from thus she will let him go and just ask if he can return. And that is what she is waiting for on the tower, if he will appear and return. I think all the happy thoughts that DMJ thought of doing with SY will be what happens after. I just can't be sure if DMJ will return to earth as a human being or still an alien but maybe a human-being so they can grow old together at the same time. One can always hope. ^__^

i tend to think this drama is going to go with a similar ending to "my sassy girl" do you remember the "ufo"looking time travel device at the end of the movie near the tree where they buried their time capsule?
then theres the epilogue scene from ep 17 imo its reminiscent of the last scene in the movie where they reunite
perhaps im wrong

btw i loved the episode
