Emergency Couple: Episode 19

This episode puts the “com” firmly back in the rom-com, and it’s about dang time. Jin-hee is determined to woo Chang-min back, and it’s so great to see the two of them smiling and enjoying each other’s company. But this turn of events isn’t good news for everyone, and not everyone is happy to be dealing with the fallout. While one former couple begins to find each other again, another has some problems of their own to straighten out.

EPISODE 19 RECAP

Jin-hee pulls Chang-min into the stairwell, puts the stethoscope to his ears, and presses the chest-piece to her heart. They look into each other’s eyes as her heart pounds, and she tells him that her heart is thumping because of him; it has been for a while now.

Chang-min adjusts the stethoscope in his ears, confusedly saying that it must be broken because he can’t hear anything. She takes it back and tries it herself, but she can hear just fine. Chang-min puts it back in his ears and puts the chest-piece right on her breasts, switching back and forth: “Here? Or here?” He’s pulling her leg — cheeky boy! Jin-hee smacks his hand and covers herself, which makes Chang-min smile his familiar mischievous smile.

Yong-gyu wanders into the break room and finds Chang-min’s box of fortune cookies. He eats one, but Chang-min comes into the room and grabs the fortune right out of his mouth. Today’s fortune says that a husband should know that his wife is a work of art that he himself creates.

In the ER, Jin-hee briefs the grandma cancer patient’s son on her surgery. The son says again that they shouldn’t have told his mother that she has cancer, and this time Chang-min steps in to point out that she should have been told of her illness sooner – it could have avoided upsetting her so badly.

He also comments that it wouldn’t have happened if her guardian (meaning her son) had been there when she found out, and the son just weakly says that he was busy at work. Chang-min replies that he should still make his mother a priority, and that he should maybe even go on a vacation with her before it’s too late (aw, like he didn’t get to do with his own father). The patient’s son asks about a new treatment, saying that it doesn’t matter what it costs. Jin-hee agrees to look into it.

In the break room, Jin-hee asks if Chang-min saw how well she handled the patient’s son, and he pretends for a second not to know what she means before admitting that he did notice. She says that it’s sort of owing to Chang-min that she’s now a doctor, but he deflects the compliment and says that it was all due to her own effort.

Jin-hee insists that he had a big influence on her and that he even helps her a lot now. But Chang-min isn’t having any of it, repeating that she’s a doctor now because of her own hard work. They reach for a supply tin at the same time, and when their hands bump they both seem affected by the unexpected skinship.

Back in the ER, Ah-reum patches up a patient with an injured leg while the patient openly ogles her, um, curves. He claims to have a hurt place on his thigh too, and keeps directing her higher and higher as she touches his leg trying to find the “injury.” Then he starts sniffing her, and now I’m thoroughly skeeved.

Chang-min notices what’s happening and comes to finish the examination, which makes the patient protest the change of doctor. He rudely commands Ah-reum to come back, and slaps away Chang-min’s hands when he tries to check the man’s leg.

The patient orders Ah-reum to examine him again, and Chang-min tells him that he’s perfectly fine and that it’s time for him to leave. When the patient demands to know who he thinks he is, Chang-min says that he’s Ah-reum’s husband. What?

Oh good, it’s only a ploy to get the patient to leave, and it works. Ah-reum thanks Chang-min, who tells her to just call a male doctor if something like that happens again.

Later, Jin-hee finds Chang-min and asks if that patient was harassing Ah-reum. He confirms, so she supposes that he was coming to Ah-reum’s rescue. Chang-min sighs that it happens to Ah-reum a lot, and Jin-hee admits that she is pretty sexy and has a nice body. Chang-min deadpans that he sure is glad that Jin-hee doesn’t have that problem. Ouch, and HAHA.

At her locker, Jin-hee stews over Chang-min’s joke and tells herself that she could have that problem too – you know, if she wanted to. She fluffs her hair, freshens her lip gloss, and makes sexy faces at herself in the mirror. Of course, this is right when Ah-reum walks in and asks what she’s doing. Busted.

Jin-hee brings up that time when she told Ah-reum to watch Chang-min over the long haul, which Ah-reum remembers. Ah-reum says lightly that of course she’ll continue to do so, since their internship is for a year and she’s sure to see Chang-min quite a lot.

Jin-hee stammers that she knows she can’t take it back, but Ah-reum lets her off the hook and says that she knows how she feels. She understands that Jin-hee was just worried that she’d come to have feelings for Chang-min again. Jin-hee relaxes now that Ah-reum isn’t a rival anymore, and invites Ah-reum out for a drink sometime.

Chang-min goes to visit his mother, who seems to be doing a little better. She asks after Jin-hee, and asks Chang-min to relay a message that she’d like to see her when she has some time. She says that she feels guilty and responsible for her husband’s death, and that if she’d known he would die so early she would have held onto him more.

Chang-min silently holds his mother’s hand as she cries over how she was always finding fault in her husband throughout their whole marriage. She says that she fears that he died first to get away from her, but Chang-min assures her that that isn’t true. He hugs her as she cries, and she tells him that she hopes he finds happiness soon.

At the hospital, Chang-min asks a pretty young patient with a cough if she would lift her top so he can listen to her breathe, but she insists that she’s just here because her ears are bothering her. He says that he needs to at least listen to her breathing from the back, but she’s wearing a one-piece dress and doesn’t want to lift it for him (I know, I’m confused too).

The patient has a big fat chip on her shoulder, and she gets angry and basically accuses Chang-min of being a pervert. He tries to explain that he just wants to check her in case the cough turns serious later. Finally he agrees to just check her ears, but in the process his knee brushes her leg. She freaks out and shoves him hard enough to land on the next exam bed.

Sang-hyuk and a nurse come running at the noise, and Chang-min gives up and offers to have a female doctor examine the patient. He goes to find Jin-hee, who’s having some difficulty herself with a male patient. He seems to have a painful problem in his pants area and doesn’t want her coming near him.

Chang-min agrees to check the patient and Jin-hee leaves the exam area (but stays to peek from behind the curtain, hee). The patient drops his trousers, and whatever he sees must look painful because Chang-min gasps out loud. The man admits that he cheated on his wife so she poured scalding water on his tender manly bits. Chang-min thinks it looks like at least a second-degree burn and gives the nurse treatment orders.

The married interns discuss the cheating patient, and Young-ae accuses her husband of not understanding women if he thinks the wife wasn’t justified in her actions. Chang-min and Jin-hee join them after finishing with their patients; it turns out that the two patients they exchanged are husband and wife.

Chun-soo comes back to work, but he seems subdued when Jin-hee welcomes him back. She asks if he’s found a treatment for the cancer patient, and he confirms that there is one but it’s very expensive. She tells him that the patient’s son said that money is no object, and Chun-soo muses that usually parents will spend any amount of money on their children but that it doesn’t usually happen the other way around.

Jin-hee feels the tension in the room and starts to ask Chun-soo something, but backs up and just asks if he had a nice vacation. At first he says yes, but then he tells her that he didn’t. He asks thoughtfully what she would do if someone told her that, in order to be a doctor, she could only live for one year – would she choose to be a doctor and live one year, or give it up and live a long life?

Jin-hee honestly answers that it would be hard to give up being a doctor, but that she would choose to live a long life. Chun-soo tells her that even though his break was only for two weeks, that it was very hard for him not to be a doctor even for a short time. Jin-hee tells him that he should date then, because having someone to spend your free time with makes that free time more precious.

Chang-min starts to drive home after his shift, but before he can leave the parking garage he nearly hits a woman wearing sexy red heels and carrying a rose in her teeth. It’s Jin-hee! She tosses the rose at him and gets in the car, asking how she looks. Chang-min: “You’re very strange.” Ha.

She tells him in a sultry voice that she arranged to have the day off tomorrow with him and orders him to take her to dinner. Chang-min is too shocked to do much but obey. Smart man.

He seems to snap out of it a bit and asks her on the drive why she’s doing something she’s never done before. She says that it’s to make him feel better but he insists that he’s fine. She asks him to just give her tonight, and he grouches that he’s heard that a lot lately. Jin-hee reminds him that he was the one who said that. Chang-min gives in and asks where they’re going, smiling at her enthusiasm.

At the restaurant, Chang-min teases Jin-hee about her drinking skills. She reminds him that he was the one who kept insisting that she drink while they were dating; it’s his fault she has such a high tolerance now. They’re so cute as she feeds him, and wipes sauce off his mouth when she deliberately smears it on him.

After dinner they take a walk, and talk turns more serious as Jin-hee admits that she was very afraid that Chang-min would leave the hospital and that she’d never see him again.

Chang-min says that his fear is that they’ll start dating a second time and hurt each other all over again, because there would be no recovering from it a second time. He asks her to check and recheck her feelings.

Chun-soo drinks soju alone after work and thinks about Jin-hee’s advice that he should date. He remembers all the embarrassing things she’s done, like slapping him and nearly pulling his pants down and setting her coat on fire, but now he remembers them as endearing.

He shows up at Ji-hye’s place, so drunk he can barely stand. She settles him on the sofa and fusses at him; not for drinking too much, but for not inviting her to drink with him. Chun-soo wonders aloud who she is to him – she brings him food, drinks with him, and replaces his holey socks. She says with a smile that she’s an all-weather friend.

Suddenly serious, he asks her if it hurts her. She tells him that he drank too much, and he just lays his head in her lap and asks if he can stay like this for a little while. Ji-hye allows it, but gently chastises him for frequently showing her this vulnerable side of him.

She tries to keep her usual calm when he asks again if it hurts her, but a shadow crosses her face. She’s had enough, and she jumps up to pour a bottle of water on Chun-soo’s face. She yells at him that she has feelings too; why does he have to show her that he’s falling apart (over another woman)?

She tells him not to do the same thing that he did with her and run away, and that he should go grab Jin-hee if he wants her. She’s on the verge of tears as she tells him that she’s tired of only being able to watch him get hurt.

But then we see that it was all in her imagination, as we cut back to Chun-soo with his head in her lap. Instead of blowing up at him as she fantasized, she just caresses his face and watches him sleep.

The next day, Ji-hye and Chun-soo arrive at work together. Jin-hee has come to the hospital even though it’s her day off, and she starts to approach them but drops her phone when she hears Ji-hye make a joke about them sleeping together. Ji-hye gets worried that Jin-hee will take her joke at face value, but Chun-soo just sighs wearily that it doesn’t matter.

Jin-hee is here to talk to Chun-soo about her grandma cancer patient. She tells him that the test results show that the new treatment could help, but he mentions again how expensive it is (the equivalent of roughly $10,000 a month). However, there’s a possibility that she could participate in clinical trials if they can’t manage the cost. Jin-hee says that she’ll talk to the son.

As Jin-hee turns to leave, Chun-soo reminds her that it’s her day off so she should leave early and go on a date. It’s difficult for him to get the words out and he doesn’t look at her.

Chang-min is at home when his doorbell rings, and he opens it to find Jin-ae with a pleading look on her face and holding Baby Gook. She has a number of auditions today and needs a sitter, because her husband and mother are both busy. She swears that Gook is an easy baby and that she won’t be gone long.

Chang-min agrees to watch the baby and immediately calls Jin-hee for backup. She rushes over to find the baby crying and Chang-min looking on the verge of tears himself.

They manage to calm the baby down, and Jin-hee apologizes for her family getting Chang-min into this situation. They figure Gook must be hungry, but then Chang-min notices that Very Special Odor – time for a diaper change! Neither of them has a clue how to feed or diaper a baby, but they manage to figure it out. Soon they’re actually having fun as they bathe the baby and splash each other.

As soon as Gook goes down for a nap, the doorbell rings — it’s Yong-gyu with food. Chang-min says that he can’t come in right now because someone is sleeping. Kwang-soo also turns up right then, and he and Yong-gyu are both shocked to see Jin-hee in Chang-min’s apartment wearing his shirt while her wet shirt dries.

The four of them have a beer, but it’s Awkward City as everyone sits in embarrassed silence. Kwang-soo says that he’ll take the baby home when he wakes up.

Yong-gyu mutters to nobody in particular that he probably shouldn’t have come. Chang-min asks what he came to say, and Yong-gyu admits that he’s thinking of quitting being a doctor.

Yong-gyu says that he’s thinking of pursuing music instead, which has Kwang-soo’s ears perking up and he invites Yong-gyu out for a drink to discuss it. Yay, a new bromance! Yong-gyu says that it might be too scary to start over at this point, but Jin-hee and Chang-min both assure him that it’s not so terrible starting a new career later in life.

The baby wakes up and the guys start to leave. When Jin-hee says that she’ll go with them, they exchange a knowing look and reason that she can’t go out in Chang-min’s shirt. So she stays, and she and Chang-min have a few more beers.

Jin-hee tells Chang-min that he did well taking care of the baby, and drunkenly asks why they never had a child. He reminds her that he wanted one, but she remembers that they were always fighting when she was ovulating. Chang-min apologizes for not being more understanding, and Jin-hee concedes that she was too young anyway.

Chang-min confesses about the “plumbing” problems he had when they were married. Jin-hee reciprocates by telling him about the huge bald patch she got from stress. The whole conversation is funny because they’re both so drunk-serious and contrite.

Jin-hee passes out and Chang-min carries her to bed. She clings to him and slurs that she’s going to start over again with him, and make a whole new beginning. He just tucks her in and smiles.

The next morning Jin-hee wakes up next to a sleeping Chang-min, and it’s pretty obvious that both of them are naked. She screams and wakes up Chang-min, and when he realizes the situation he screams right back.

COMMENTS

I totally agree with the comments in the previous recap that it would have been nice to have more backstory in regards to Jin-hee and Chang-min, but I can’t say that I’m unhappy with the course their new courtship is taking. In order to move forward in a healthy new relationship, Chang-min was going to need to slow down and stop trying to control everything and Jin-hee was going to have to stop thinking that she was the victim in all things. Thank goodness both of them seem to be doing that now, so I can feel confident (if they do end up together) that they at least have some tools to work with when problems arise in the future. And they will; that’s just part of life. It’s how we deal with problems when they come up that determines if our relationships get weaker or stronger.

I like how this time, they both seem to be equals in the pursuing. Chang-min pursued Jin-hee for a while, until she asked (well, slapped) him to stop. Now Jin-hee is doing the pursuing, and I can’t help but enjoy watching her have fun with it. She seems confident and happy, and comfortable for the first time since the beginning of the show. I also think that it’s good for Chang-min, because his ego and confidence took a big blow when Jin-hee told him that she wanted him to leave her alone. It’s good for him, and for Jin-hee too, to let her take the reins for a while.

Another thing that I like about them together in the present is that they have no fear of bringing up the past. Communication was their most obvious hurdle during their marriage, but now they seem to feel comfortable raising the hard subjects. Every time one of them talks about their fear of getting attached then failing again, or why they never had a baby, a small part of me thinks that they actually might stand a chance this time around. Little hints of these conversations going well now show that they do seem to have learned how to talk about the hard stuff in a calm and respectful way. Hopefully that will still hold true when they have their next fight.

Sadly though, the progress that Jin-hee and Chang-min are making together is leaving poor Chun-soo in the dust, hurting and unable to express it to anyone but Ji-hye. I feel terrible for him because this setback seems to be causing him to turtle again, drawing into his shell and denying that he’s hurt. I’ll admit that I cheered a little when Ji-hye gave it to him with both barrels (and was disappointed that it was all in her mind) because dude, you’re a little old for the pouting act. Yell, kick, scream and fight for what you want, but the “poor me I’m so pitiful” behavior is getting old. I hope that sooner rather than later, Ji-hye actually says those words out loud to him.

And Ji-hye needs to hear them too, because her trick of pretending nothing is wrong isn’t really much healthier. She clearly still has feelings for Chun-soo and while I respect her ability to stand back and let him go after what he wants, I think that she has just as much right to speak up for what she wants. How will Chun-soo know that he has a choice if Ji-hye doesn’t tell him that she still has feelings for him? He obviously has never fully moved on from their relationship, because he’s still holding on to photos and thinks of her first when he needs someone to lean on. It’s only fair that she tell him that she’s still having feelings for him too.

Despite my worries over Chun-soo and Ji-hye, I still have hope that the show will wrap everyone’s story line up in a way that is both satisfactory and believable. Even Chang-min’s mother, though we saw blessedly little of her in this episode, seems to have truly changed for the better and I’m looking forward to her discussion with Jin-hee.

But most of all, I’m glad that here in the backstretch, we’re seeing that it is possible to go back and rewrite history. If two people are willing to work on their problems together, admit where they were wrong and make the effort to fix the mistakes of the past, there can be hope. That doesn’t mean it will be an easy road; but if you let it, love can be the most powerful force for change. I wouldn’t argue with a little kissing action, either.

I honestly couldn't have said it better myself, I share the exact same sentiments in regards to this episode.
I absolutely eat up their scenes where they're just simply talking to each other, the fact that they're able to openly do so speaks volumes to how far they've come from when they were married and first met up again after 6 years.
I'm like "hallelujah" it's such a nice contrast to back in episode 4 or 5 I think when Jin Hee asks Chang Min if he ever thought about why they had divorced each other and he replied back that he hadn't and he didn't need to/care to, now look at him as well as Jin Hee owning their own mistakes in the breakdown of their marriage and wanting to take it slow.

Special shout out to our awesome Baby Gookie aka Kwon Joon Young for being the vitamin to our show, I don't know where they found him but his the cutest baby I've ever seen in a K-drama. I was hoping we'd get scenes of him with Chang Min x Jin Hee and so glad we did.

Baby Gook IS the cutest Kdrama baby ever. I'm glad too that they talked to each other about some of the things that caused their divorce. I'd rather their first carnal recoupling not be due a table full of beer; I want them to remember! Plus, I don't want a convenient pregnancy to be considered THE reason they remarry. Writers probably won't go down that road; not enough time. Still really enjoyed this episode.

Sure there is time- don't forget the old kdrama device - 6 months later. Or 2 years later or even 6 years later like Bad Couple LOL.

I don't know why but I genuinely don't believe they actually did the deed, I reckon the show is trolling us and we come to discover through flashbacks what really went down.
Great way to end episode 19 and have everyone come back in the last week to find out what happened.

You could be right...no sex or another, no I was going to say another fantasy sequence, but those have "the dreamer" aware of the imagined actions. Please, no fast forward time jumps!

My favorite episode by far. I was literally rofl. Song ji hyo is so damn funny the car park scene where she bit a huge rose with those over sized sunnies and red heels. I was laughing so hard when she threwbthe rose and it made a "thud" noise. Don't forget jihyo's sultry voice and the she said "GO".
Baby Gook is also a scene stealer. I swear I never seen a baby act like he/she understood the scene. That baby nails the appropriate expression everytime. Baby Gook is also cute as a button. I Love his hair.
Lastly, I agree that CM and JH has established good communication which is a huge factor to make their relationship work the second time around.

While I lik the fact she's taking initiative and being proactive, and it is necc bec she had a whole load of hesitance (understandably) ....

I actually did not like that scene.

It just seemed out of character for her, and cheesy. There must be classier ways to seduce a man.

How do you know it's out of character for Jin Hee? We weren't privy to how she was when they dated or the first half of their marriage even though they did give us glimpses of happy times between them.

Now as for older JH, yes it's out of character and that is why it was goofy and cheesy. She has finally took the reins in trying to win Chang Min back and she realizes that the she has to show him better than she can tell him.

I'm not sure what your definition of class. Should she just have showed up at his door with a long coat wearing lingerie underneath while wearing her red high heels with the long stem rose in her mouth? Jin Hee's garage scene was flirty, classy and cheesy and also, not to forget, the fortune cookies were a nice touch of getting his attention.

I only felt sorry for him in the episode where the mothers were arguing in the chief's office. Poor baby got scared and started crying. Of course it worked for the scene, but I worry about him not understanding what is happening and getting upset.

Fun episode, except for Mopey Chun-soo. Pull it together, man!

And did anybody else chuckle to see that suddenly Chang-min owned a large infant bathtub? And of course, where would you bathe a baby? In the middle of the living room! Why not? Ha!

More happy Chang-min and Jin-hee, please.

Wondered if they went shopping too for that toddler bathtub. I actually rewinded and paused that scene because I thought it was just a large basin that Changmin has in his apartment. But nope! It was a bathtub alright, hahaha. That baby Gook is one of the cutest babies in kdramaland. The last baby I remember fondly is that cute one from SFFTS/WUAS.

I mean it might be years ago, but I thought she would be quite used to waking up beside Chang Min every morning...

and lol at the beginning where CM kinda 'grope' her with the stethoscope..

This is the only drama I'm watching for the past 3 weeks. I've even let the cheesetastic BotC sit in the backburner for now.

Lots of funny moments in this episode. But a couple of touching and sad moments too like with Chang-min's mom and Chief's drinking. Re the weird couple patients: wasn't that Narsha (snorted at her demure act) and Song-yi's manager in YFAS?

This is actually one of my fave dramas this year so far because it satisfies all my rom-com buttons, plus except for CM's mom during the first half, there's no real bad guy to interfere with the romance. The hospital stuff isn't bad or boring either (though that professor guy who has it in for Chief has to go ASAP!)

Slappyunni, you made me realize I was really harsh when I watched this episode. But even now I don't think I can change my attitude. It has disappointed me so much in the last few episodes that I can't get anything positive to say.

The ridiculousness of Jin-hee was...unreasonable. I would have preferred if we saw the development they seem to have simply skimmed over. It seems really inconsistent with her character.

And I wish that wasn't Ji-Hye's imagination. She should have put chief in his place.

I didn't like the morning scene. Do people really have sex when they are drunk and then they don't remember it? Sure, it can happen when they are in mid 20s or whatever, but aren't they qualified "doctors" in their 30s? It didn't seem right for them to act like that. It may seem funny, but the topic they are dealing with, isn't. >_>

I feel like Baby Gook is saving the show. Cute!

Ji Hye totally should have done that for real! its about damn time. Jin Hee is not right for CS. He's damaged with a big D. And he needs stability and his best friend and not "flutters". I dunno what his facination with Jin Hee is but I'm not buying that its love.

err..he is not the right guy for JH and a damaged man? wow.. I DON'T REMEMBER HIM doing something bad for Jin Hee..he always genuinely support JH in his own way, watch the damn episodes..

true, he might socially awkward..but that's just him being him..so what if he hate divorce..does that make him a damaged person? At the very least, if he marry someone in the future, he would do his very best to protect the marriage..

So what Changmin have done for Jin Hee so far? So he used his family influence to save JH from getting fired and sacrifice his life in that false infection room..So what? Chief also have done many, maybe more than him and he also tried his hardest despite doesn't have enough influence in the hospital to save JH job and he also bravely sacrifice his job for the sake of Jin Hee dignity by punched that douchebag doctor face. And throughout this drama, I don't remember him doing anything that would harm JH like some psycho/damaged man. He NEVER force/push/threat JH like some hoodlum or obsess ex.

So far, he treated Jin Hee maturely and he also gentlemanly willingly support Jin Hee with Changmin even though his heart broken to pieces...and guess what? To recover his heart break, he decided to have drinks and reminiscence the good memories he had with Jin Hee LIKE ANY NORMAL HUMAN BEING WOULD HAVE DONE..

..and then he went to one his closest friend(the only friend whom he can speak and joking casually) who turn out to be A FEMALE. So you can't have female as one of your good friends that you can drop in when you drunk or wasted or sad...I smell a discrimination sh*t here..

In Korean dramas they can have or not have sex sober or drunk and not remember if they did or did not apparently. The non-cable channels especially are not exactly realistic dealing with anything beyond bad kissing scenes.

ME TOO! That morning after bothered me. Bad move. Park Shi-Hoo m'ries anyone? That should register on all Korea.

(1) I would NOT be thrilled IF they did it while drunk. Because it would indicates it wasn't mutually consensual (ie Chang-min only) as she seemed full passed out.

I hope it just vomitting that made that scene necessary.

(2) This scene sets the stage so they can now go on to do the deed in episode 20, in full awareness of their au-naturel state and nekkid situation together.

Waayyyyy more meaningfully romantic too, than drunken groping. Muhahahaha! :P

(3) Having a baby is NOT the answer for this couple - and a baby is NOT the magic glue for any relationship not working out.
Show, please do not go there! This couple need some couple exploration and communication time to rebuild.

(4) Adorable Baby Gook is also Lee-Jia's baby #2 in Thrice Married Woman .... I FFwded and saw him being fed there.

THANKS for recaps!

At this point, the only thing I still like about this show is Baby Gook!

i know where you're feelings are coming from, but lets remember, this is a Korean Drama, with very little romance scenes (kissing, hugging, holding hands etc.) plus, it has several charcters from heirs, a drama many teens watched, so alot of teens may be watching this drama, and Korea isn't real big on P.D.A or teen pregnency or promoting any of that. (thats why holding hands is a huge deal) even the shows that are more adult in Korea, doesn't go into stuff like that, rare cases has it been shown where two adults in bed (from all dramas i've seen). I doubt that it's anything like that, especially since this has been a case where it seems like one thing, but is later reveled as something different.

I can't complain about Jin Hee sudden change behaviour because I love her crazy way to pursue ChangMin scene, it's romcom (AND k-drama) afterall
Baby Gookie, gosh, if only you're not 22 years younger
I hope final episodes give good setlement for my ultimate heroine JinHye
I know this drama try to portrait wisdom that you need to pursue something you want to do and passionate about, BUT, I feel really pissed off to YongGyu, medical school is not cheap! How can you... jeez, not that easy man, at least make some money to pay your parents hard work, then you can do what ever you want, such a spoil child

I agree about YG, seriously, to go through all of those years of medical school and then to have a change of heart. What!? And now you want to pursue...music! Really??? I bet his parents are going to be thrilled with his career change and also in my mind, if he gives up being a dr. he has pretty much given up his chance with AR. Her family might accept him as a doctor, but not as a musician. I am hoping he saves someone's life near the end and rethinks his decision to stop being a doctor.

Thanks for the recap.

This scene points out the idiocy of the medicine in this series.

"Jin-hee pulls Chang-min into the stairwell, puts the stethoscope to his ears, and presses the chest-piece to her heart. They look into each other’s eyes as her heart pounds, and she tells him that her heart is thumping because of him; it has been for a while now."

Jin-hee had been running all over the hospital looking for Chang-min. If she were looking at a file cabinet, her heart would be still be pounding. No sane person, certainly no medically trained person, should interpret that pounding as sexual excitement. :(

On the other hand, though, I had a thrill with this episode:

That 'targeted therapy' they were talking about for Grandma? That's one of the drugs I support in my day job. I was only half paying attention and then they gave just that little bit of detail that made me sit up and go HEY, that's ME!

It was completely unexpected and absolutely thrilling. :)

"I’ll admit that I cheered a little when Ji-hye gave it to him with both barrels (and was disappointed that it was all in her mind) because dude, you’re a little old for the pouting act. "

I felt the exact same way about Ji-hye standing up for her own emotions.

I was particularly moved watching as so many conflicting emotion play across the actress's face before the character acted.

But the scene also seemed like another of the random slap-dash randomly situated, randomly edited scene that have infested the last two episodes (badminton anyone?).

Because of the random nature of the scene, I was happy it was only in her mind. Now I wish the passion she is feeling would inform her behavior in life.

Ji-hye action and emotional construction is more like the traditional second MALE lead than female second lead in rom-coms. Usually the second male leads are more altruistic towards the object of their desire, while the female second leads are more selfish in their desire towards the object of desire and will do whatever it takes to possess them.

Ji-hye behavior might be the result of being older and having had to fend for herself in the real world.

Ji-Hye definitely has to have the dreaded D.T.R. discussion.

I understand her wanting the best for the one she loves. I understand her desire to be, first and foremost, a good friend to the one she loves. I understand her not wanting to manipulate him into a relationship, because ultimately it'll fall apart if she does. But there's a point where I think, 'Oh honey, this is only going to end in tears. You can't just be friends with him. Let him know how you feel and pull away.'

The resolution I could see working for those two characters is for him to realize that he was mostly attracted to Jin-Hee because she was more broken than he was. Thus, at a deep level, she didn't threaten his abandonment issues. Ji-Hye needs to show him she has vulnerabilities too - after all she and her child were both abandoned by her fiancé. If she allows him to see her deeper concerns, instead of always acting like she doesn't have pain or uncertainties of her own, he can feel more comfortable with her. And I hope he could also realize that being a good father to her child would help heal his own childhood wounds. (What has him stuck is the notion that healing will be a function of receiving what he missed out on; when in reality it will be a function of giving what he missed out on.) So that works in my mind as a reasonable resolution for both of their character arcs. However they work it out, I hope they get together.

Re: "the female second leads are more selfish in their desire towards the object of desire and will do whatever it takes to possess them."

Um, maybe CM's mom took up the drama's entire quota for that?

One thing I realized this episode, is that Chief Soo has too much baggage to be with Jin-Hee. I was so rooting for her to be with him. I figured she would work out her past issues with Chang Min and then get together with the Chief. But Ji-Hye was right. He basically has sat back and allowed her to start feeling things for her ex-husband again. Jin-Hee has reached out to him, time and time again. The only thing he really stepped up and did was punch Professor Ahn. Meanwhile, Chang Min changed his approach with her, especially after losing his dad, and now she's interested in him again. I don't feel sorry for the Chief. He had way too many opportunities to woo Jin-Hee and he squandered them all. Maybe this will wake him up.

Doesn't anybody find some scenes to be overtly sexual? Not just the patients (that lady who got cross with CH and the guy with broken leg hitting on AR).... I even found Chang Min's actions (where he puts the steth on Jin Hee's breasts) as unnecessary or out of line.
And after showing all this boldness the writers chose not to show how Chang min fell for Jin Hee's charms .... Common, no kiss? Just naked people screaming at each other?? So childish :-(

I agree with some comments...the editing WAS abrupt.

This response ended up in the wrong place originally. :(

I had almost the opposite response. I thought it was nice moment of play between the Chang-Min and Jin-Hee.

Actually I was confused by Jin-Hee use of a stethoscope to have Chang-Min know his presence affected her. It seemed to me, considering their history, that it would have been permissible and natural for her to put his hand on her chest to feel her heart thumping. Where the hand is placed not a hypersexual position, because to feel for the heart beat the hand is place at the top of the breast, not on the breast proper. What makes the position sexual it the couple’s awareness of each other as sexual beings.

Then give up on it and stop commenting. You're not even giving a reasonable explanation on why you think it's not making sense to you unlike some of the other commenters. Just go comment on the shows that you do like. I don't like some of the other shows but you don't see me posting on the recap threads because I don't want to mar other people's enjoyment of the shows they like. Seriously. Now I remember why I've ignored most of the comments in DB posts this year. It's because of all the negative stuff I've read from last year's dramas. And most of those comments were yours.

whoa. calm down. not everyone is great at providing logical explanations of why they dislike the pace and direction of a show. I think both positive and negative comments should be welcomed because it only shows the diversity of the audience at dramabeans. I like the audience here because though they express their negative views it rarely gets personal and acerbic. also, I'm in the camp of having supported and liked the show a lot only to be disappointed by its latest developments.

for me, the narrative of EC has always been weak. the producers and writers are great at comedy and infusing slapstick humor in the mix. The backstory though is very weak and rather poor in pacing and not done in a seamless fashion such that it delivers poor characterizations. because of that, it's hard for me to root for a character or be drawn into their story. The backstory of JH and CM happened in such drips and drabs and weighted toward the latter half of the drama that JH's about-face with CM and wanting to start over feels abrupt to me. I have a difficult time loving JH though I laugh at the "com" SJH pulls in for her character. It's gone from captive and entertainingly heartfelt to just barely interesting.

I do love LPM's CS because his storyline and character has been the most consistent. The actor, LPM, is quite wonderful given that he had not much to work with (he's second lead after all) and lesser air time. Also he's great at non-verbal cues and subtlety making CS into a very real and believable human being with flaws.

Ooh. That was one of my favorite lines. It's so true to life.

It's not as unilateral as that, as each person has agency and responsibility for the direction of their own life and emotions. But, the fact is, over time a husband and wife do shape each other for better or worse.

Case in point: how they've written the characters for the mom and dad in Sly and Single again!

"over time a husband and wife do shape each other for better or worse"

That's completely different from "his wife is a work of art that he himself creates" though. To me, the line from EC is creepy, possessive and objectifying.

I had a pretty negative interpretation of that line too. I was like, oh, the fortune cookies that's cute... And then I got to the fortune within the cookie and I was like that is NOT cute. What is with the sexist overtones? I mean, actually this drama has been doing a pretty good job of changing certain stereotypes (i.e., those about divorcees) and I loved how Jinhee defended female divorcees, but what the heck was that whole woman being a work of art created by her husband line??? Reminds me a bit of Pygmalion, except it's almost as if the scriptwriters are trying to show that story in a good light.

Required fields are marked *

Oh, now I see how you read that line. Funny how we can come at it from completely different angles. I read it through the lens of Jin-Hee's perspective. And as a poetic expression.

This reminds me of that old word-play exercise:

"I didn't say you stole it"

Read the sentence, with one word emphasized. Depending on what word is emphasized, the sentence has six different meanings.

Required fields are marked *

I can see how that line can be misinterpreted as creepy and possessive.

It can also be interpreted as this:
A man who treats his wife as a work of art, puts time, effort and devotion into a creation that he loves. No creator can create anything without loving the creation.
So a husband who should know that, is a husband who needs to be aware that his love may help decide if she is worthy to be called a work of art.

I didn't like how Jin-Hee seemed to be caught in the middle between her feelings for the chief and Chang Min. If she's pursuing Chang Min, why show she may have lingering feelings for the chief? Because the writers did that, I don't think they let us get fully on board with Jin-Hee and her intentions with CM. It makes her seem like a two-timer because it seems to us she hasn't committed whole-heartedly one way (to CM).

There are better ways or more specifically other words in the English dictionary that can have the exact same impact of bringing across their point of view. I don't find anything wrong with people being extremely disappointed with how this show was handled, especially since it started out with so much promise of being something different but that doesn't excuse the fact that cursing is just deemed as impolite and discourteous.

Loved this episode, I am so happy they brought comedy back... so many good scenes, from I liked the stethescope flirting, and that garage scene...LMAO... now I hope OCM and OJH has a new beginning with each other, I always been on that ship... and for me, I did not see any chemistry with Chief and OJH. Actually their date on Ep. 17 was painful to watch, because it was so awkward not in underlying chemistry exploding way but, rather...wow... what happened to that chemistry from episodes where they did the CPR scene or the removing gum from the pants scene... any ways, I agree with others who say, Jin Hye is too good for Chief, because she should be the first choice. Chief, has a long way to go...and honestly, I don't think he has love type of feelings for Jin Hee, I almost think his actions are reactions to ChangMin's territorial behavior and Jin Hye's pushing him. Choi Jin Hyuk so sexy... I am gonna miss him when he goes away for military service...:(

but why do i still feel that jin hee still got something for chief?? why are they exchanging those looks in the room when they talk about dating and such..is it because jin hee felt sorry for chief or disappointed that the chief gave up?? bcus in preview, it seems that jin hee still cared about chief~

and the sex scene is not funny...it just absurd to me, so i hope they troll us again with something funny that makes them go naked~

I agree..obviously there's something going on between them..I don't know why, but I feel that their feeling(chief and Jin Hee) seems so mutual and...believable.

And what I can't really fathom is how the writer rush the development between OCH and JH, making it feeling so forced and unREAL. I think Jin Hee actually feeling confuse between the line of feeling sympathy and love. She thought that she love OCH but something tells me she's not really into him that much.

Just look on her shocked, disappointed, tense face after she heard that Chief slept with Prof Shim and compare those with the scene when she shows that jealousy of her when she heard OCH called Ah Reum his wife. It's certainly on different level..like I said in my comment in ep 18, the scenes she had with chief just hit...DEEPER. It weight more, it has this adult-like romance feeling inside it, it felt real and mature.

You're right, those glances between the chief and Jin-Hee. It doesn't make sense to have them when there are only 2 more episodes left. If they put them in at the beginning and had JinHee sway more and more toward Chang-Min, it would have made more sense.
But she's declared she wants to start again with Chang-Min, all with a not-so-convincing feeling from the viewers.

Was totally hooked up with this drama in the beginning, but the fast-forwarded character developments are jarring. So I've stopped trying to make sense of it and just enjoy Song Ji Hyo and Choi Jin Hyuk having their happy end. On other note, so hoping for another appearance of Choi Jin Hyuk in Running Man...

Agreed! I really enjoyed witnessing the process of Changmin and Jinhee from their initial adorable bickering and interactions to how they start to rediscover each other and figure out their feelings. These two episodes are such a stark contrast to episode 17 in terms of editing and storytelling (which I personally think is the best one so far). But oh well so yes, toss away all the thinking and analysis...i just want a happy ending for them two! There's just something which is so satisfying to see them having once failed to make their marriage work, get a second chance to love each other again.

I totally second seeing Choi Jin Hyuk on Running Man again. I went back to re-watch that episode and just found it so strange seeing them on opposite teams and having next to no interactions but being in the same vicinity of one another - who would've thought that a couple of months later they'd end up being leads in a drama together.

Am I glad that they finally put back the com into this show. Le sigh... Last week's episodes were rather depressing.

Highlights:
- The seduction scene. CM's facial expressions were priceless. I applaud SJH. She can definitely do rom-coms.
- CM and JH babysitting baby Gook. Aww he's such an adorable baby.
- The drunk conversation between CM and JH because they were discussing things so calmly and just saying things out in the open with just complete honesty.
- Dr. SJH throwing that water on Chief Gook.. but alas, it was only in her imagination. Chief Gook was rather pathetic in this episode. . .

I can't believe that there's only 1 more week left of this show. :'( What am I going to fill my Fridays and Saturdays now??

This episode brings smiles to my face and reminds me of some ‘could be’ moments that would’ve made me love this series if only the show did it sooner. I love the chemistry between Song Ji Hyo and Choi Jin Hyuk just by them being in one scene together. I was annoyed when I thought Song Ji Hyo overreacts her parts in the beginning of the series, but I realized I was just too used to her Running Man persona, when actually most of the drama leads do what she did. To me, Ji Hye is my favorite character but I love how far both leads has come as a person.

I agree and enjoy how they can talk about the past without hard feelings and willingly admit their own mistakes. Hard subjects are hard to talk about, and it seems whether they’re drunk or sober they are willingly assessing what has gone wrong in the past and be honest.

I feel that all series long the only flaw that kept me from falling in love with it is the writing. I wish the story telling could be more subtle and not filled with useless word reactions. I know most dramas would have people keep asking ‘what’ after another character says something, but this show is so full of such reactions that I started to get annoyed. If only the story telling were better, I would’ve connected with the character and feel what they were going through, instead I had to use my own deductions as to how they feel and why they do things. There is just no smooth transition to the characters’ growth and my love for the leads’ chemistry is the only thing that keeps me watching and making excuses to the transitions.
