Kim Ji-suk becomes a neurosurgeon in Angel Eyes

Kim Ji-suk, Lee Ha-yool

Kim Ji-suk (Wonderful Mama, Alice in Cheongdam-dong) has joined the cast of SBS’s upcoming weekend series Angel Eyes. He’ll play a thoughtful neurosurgeon (the type of guy mothers love), and will be the third member of a love triangle with Gu Hye-sun and Lee Sang-yoon. I haven’t seen his recent work and most remember him for his turn as the sleazy ex-boyfriend Chang-ryul in Personal Taste, so this will be quite a departure!

Angel Eyes is about a blind woman, played by Gu Hye-sun, who is given the gift of sight and now, in a way of demonstrating her gratitude, works as an EMT. Lee Sang-yoon has taken the part of her first love, who broke up with her because of a tragedy between the pair’s families, and whom she meets again twelve years later. New face Lee Ha-yool will join the team as another rescue worker.

In other news, Choi Moon-suk will produce the weekend drama rather than direct, and Park Shin-woo (who was an assistant director on Yawang and Ghost) will helm. It will be Park Shin-woo’s first headlining gig, and it sounds like he will have his hands full with this ensemble of actors and the writing by Yoon Ji-ryun (Operation Proposal, Boys Over Flowers).

Considering that the last project Gu Hye-sun and Yoon Ji-ryun collaborated on was Boys Over Flowers, it’s difficult to envision what the product of their work together on this super melo plot will be — let’s hope that veteran producer/director Choi Moon-suk (he just produced You From Another Star, and his last directorial effort was Will It Snow For Christmas) will be able to keep a tight rein on the series.

The cast held its first script read at the end of February; Seung Ri (of Big Bang) and Hyun Jyu-ni (Oohlala Spouses, Iris) play supporting roles and were also in attendance.

The show will air on weekends after Thrice Married Woman completes its run early next month.

Kim Ji Suk has been wasted in so many roles, Personal Taste being the worst. I can see this new role joining the pile. He needs better projects.

Completely agree. I hung my head so low when I found out he was cast in this role. I'm sure he will do well in it but he can definitely do much better.

The first time I saw him was in PT as well. I liked him a lot in INR 2012 (I think that was the title?), and I recently saw him again in a KBS drama special (one episode). He is a really good actor, who emotes really well. I love reading his body language, and I love what he does with his face and eyes. He also does being drunk very well.

After watching him in that KBS drama special (Came to Me and Became a Star), I thought he was definitely male lead worthy. Many of the actors who play second leads are male lead materials, in my opinion. I sometimes wonder if they are not acast as a male lead because they are not as popular as the current crop of male lead actors (though I do think you have to start somewhere. A weekend drama maybe?). He is also very attractive, which adds to his many other qualities. And I think he speaks English fluently? I remember reading somewhere in the days of PT that he had lived for some time in England. It's kind of sad and disappointing to see good actors being wasted.

completely agree with the thoughts expressed here. he actually filmed acouple Personal Taste scenes at my boss' penthouse apartment in Songdo (Korea) and he was extremely generous and down-to-earth (unlike Lee Minho, but that's another story).

I also watched him in INR 2012 and fell in love with both him and Lee Jin-wook. loved that drama with all my <3!

I hope some forward-thinking director will cast him as the FIRST lead sometime soon. stat!

Lee Min Ho is so overrated

so ladies, to explain: my boss has a fabulous penthouse apartment in Songdo which he doesn't use most of the time. so dramas like "Iris" and "Personal Taste" have filmed scenes there (usually the rich character is bathing or drinking wine or doing something mundane very atmospherically).

it was my first time watching a drama taping, and let's just say there is a LOT of time for the actors just to wait around for the scene to be prepped, etc. even stars like Lee Byung-hun have been filming at the penthouse, and he in particular was also pretty friendly and stopped to take photos with my boss and our staff.

in regards to the Personal Taste filming, both Kim Jisuk and Wang Ji-ae were just so generous and kind to our team and they just seemed very down-to-earth. Lee Minho refused to take a picture with us, and even with my boss (the owner of the apartment!) I thought it was extremely rude, considering we allowed them to film FOR FREE and even provided some of our staff. I was a HUGE LMH fan prior to this and even begged my boss to fly back from Beijing (where we were on a business trip) a few hours early so that we could see LMH film in his apartment. at the time, I thought it was kismet, but it was not. even his manager refused to have him take a photo with us.

my husband teases me about this all the time now, but I have since gotten over my LMH crush and have moved on to more worthy recipients of my affection. ;)

@ Kyuri,

WOW!!!!! Thank you for that info about KJS. I do get the feeling (I can't explain why or how) that he is a (genuinely) humble person who gets along with others, and I can see him helping his fellow actor/actress be more comfortable with a scene. I SO loved him in that drama special, he was so good in it. Too bad it was just one ep. He had really good chemistry with Jung So Min. Also, it is so cool that your boss had something to do with the PT drama, (and also cool that you have some 1st hand info about the people associated with that drama).

Also, I wrote this, " I sometimes wonder if they are not acast" when I meant to say this, " I sometimes wonder if they are not cast." Sorry about that mistake.

Could it be because Lee Min Ho is a much bigger star than Kim Ji Suk? A small fry like Kim Ji Suk would have to be humble right? I've just always wondered if these second leads have no choice but to be humble because of their status or if it's really who they are in real life. It kind of reminds me of Cheon Song Yi in YWCFTS when she was popular and could have the drama staff cater to her demands but when she was demoted to second lead she had no choice but to suck it up?

This is true but seeing as he is bffs with Lee Dong Wook and Lee Jin Wook, I think it's safe to say it's his personality. I feel like all three of them are just really laid back, nice people, lol.

I still remember his English from Personal Taste and it was really good (good pronunciation, too). I sometimes think of him when a more popular actor tries to speak English in a drama, lol.

I think he studied in England, hence the good pronunciation. I remember looking it up when I watched PT because, just like you said, his English was good. lol

Yeah if I'm not mistaken, her lived there for several years growing up... like Middle or High School years.

The very first drama i watched him in was Likable or Not (very good one if you have the patience for a long daily drama). Hilariously, his character was always being put down by his snooty brother in law for applying for a highest position in the company when he doesn't even speak English. So he studies really hard and totally rocks the English portion of the interview . Then, they have a scene with the brother in law (who, of course, studied abroad in the States) soaking English to a business associate and you couldn't understand a word of it. The scene was halfway over before I realized he was speaking English.

It wasn't until PT came out that I realized that they did it all on purpose to show off KJS English skills.

Agree. And it's so sad. He deserves more than this. Why do those PD couldn't see his talent? Wae?

KJS was in "Chuno" where I thought he overacted (along w/ Jang Hyuk) a bit, but he was excellent in INR2012.

Why can't he ever get a male lead instead of second male lead I love him but hate watching him never get the girl (besides wonderful mama which was one of my fav weekend dramas until the last 6 episodes)

Yes, that's the saddest thing. I felt heartache watching I need Romance 2, he totally deserves the love. But why? And his last kbs drama special, I couldn't watch the ending, yeah thanks to the spoiler comment, since he couldn't end his love story in happiness. I love both lead, I did even check Youtube daily since the news broke, but why it should be sad drama. Argh (sorry for this bad fangirling)
Oppa definitely deserves more than this.

Reading this post, yes, I remember that pain. In INR2 he was so lovable yet he hadn't been loved. A sweet yet gentleman character that maybe we find it rarely in the real life. Ouh, I feel sad and disappointed again.

I feel the same way. Guess he does not have luck with picking projects. The last role I like of his was "the vineyard man" and that was ages ago. Lol I hope he'll have better luck. Judging from his interviews, he seems to really love acting.

Can't really say that i am excited about this drama...I have seen Kim Ji Suk in a few projects, and I actually do like him...but he is not exactly a drama magnet for me...as for Gu Hye-sun...I dunno....I haven't been able to watch anything of hers after BBF...she doesn't appeal to me at all.....
The only way I will be checking out this drama is if it has a good viewer rating or you folks at dramabeans rave about it :)

..........Sigh. I really like Kim Ji Suk, but for me to properly fangirl--uh support--him, he needs to be in something I wanna watch. I first saw him in Personal Taste, and despite, well the drama itself, and his role as the ex, I liked him for some reason--and not just his looks. Hope he kills it in this and gets a better break soon! (But who knows, maybe I'll watch and ffwd to all his scenes.)

Yes, I Hate You But It's Fine was a nice daily! :D
That was also one of the first appearances of Lee Sang Yoon in dramaland, he was dating Kim Ji Suk's character first love/cousin by marriage if I remember well (who kinda look like Gu Hye Sun actually).
They had a nice bromance going on, it's going to be fun seeing both of them on screen together again!

Yes he did get the girl!
There is a kdrama law that says that when two characters meet each other by chance on more than five occasions in a city as big as Seoul, they cannot not end up together. :D
Story was pretty good if you're into dailies but yes, it is very long.

So... can I ask, what's the difference between producing and directing in Kdrama terms? I feel like the way it's done in K-ent is different than how I understand it in Hollywood terms.

PS newbie actor guy is cute haha, but unfortunately even him isn't enough to convince me to tune in.

A producer will be someone like Anthony - who makes all things work (financing, organizing, casting, employing staff etc.) and a director works on set - he tells the actors what to do.

Thank you for that explanation. However, when news are given of new dramas, we usually see the term "and the PD for this drama will be..." which would mean "the Producer Director, right? Meaning that person would be doing both jobs: that of a director, AND the job of a producer? That's a lot, isn't it?

I thought PD meant Production Director, as in the person who directs the production or drama. The producer can be someone else or an organization, like the channel (KBS, SBS, TVN) or Group 8 and SM, which do produce dramas. That's my understanding of the terms, but I could be wrong...

I first saw Kim Ji-suk in PT and I hated his character for a while until I heard him speak English. I fell in love with him in INR 2012 and I hurt cause he didn't get the girl.
I tried watching Absolute Boyfriend but Gu Hye-sun is in it so I passed, now she's cast with him? Why?
From what I know, weekend dramas usually take a few episodes to get going, how many episodes do I have to sit through because of Kim Ji-suk? I have Nothing against GHS, her Jan-di is my second favourite version of Makino Tsukushi after Mao Inoue.

I really like the way Kim Ji Suk played the role of Tommy Hong in Alice in Cheongdam Dong. He somehow can put a layer of the personality of Tommy Hong . His role was not a part of a triangle relationship so it is not an usual second male lead but his character somehow stood out.

This plot line sounds very similar to Emergency Couple, but with EMT's this time around.

This sounds a little better than any of the other weekend dramas now or upcoming, so I might check it out, but not holding up any high hopes. Far too many of the weekend dramas just get super slow after the first 10 or so episodes and drag for the next 35.

He is the lead in You Came To Me And Became A Star (or something that sounds like that), on KBS world, a drama special. Read that drama title again, and if you think that's a metaphor, it's not.

I knew that one episode drama. And damn, I do love Jung So min as well. But sadly, I couldn't finish watching since I read the spoiler comment already. I love both actors but why on earth that drama did end that way.
And the title, sigh, maybe metaphor is too mainstream these days, so they un-metaphor the metaphor, bleh so clever.
I remember they both came to Strong Heart. There they were so adorable yet hilarious. And since that day I declare my self to fall for them. They have spark thing on their personality yet so talented in their acting thing. That's why I don't understand those PDs.

i liked him best in Chuno & the movie Take Off (which was my favorite movie the year it came out) :) he played a very unconventional character in both which i appreciate more than his other roles.

unfortunately, i can't stand Gu Hye Sun so i'll be opting out of this drama. (also, can't stand melodramas)

I know Kim Ji Suk can totally do better, but I can't help but wonder if it's his playboy look that traps him into the second-lead box...I think the same of Lee Kyu-Han--even though he took a lead role in The Marriage Plot, he still screamed second lead to me.

I'm sorry but is it just me or there's anyone else that excited because of Lee Hayool? Cause he's damn fine in the super boring TV Novel Eunhee. And he's the only thing that keeps me stuck with the tv novel. Which is of course had another round of bad ending. But seriously, this guy is awesome! Urgh. Welcome to the drama Choi Myeongho! LOL.
I was so not anticipating this drama but now I think I'll try to keep my eye on this one. :D
PS: Myeongho is Hayool's character in Eunhee.. Anyway, I thought his name is Lee Jongho? Bet he use a stage name then XD
