Kolorful Palette: Shades of blue [Three Days]

In case you can’t tell, this is Tae-kyung from Three Days leaning against a tree, after his narrow escape from Team Leader Ham’s clutches. This felt like an important turning point, where it’s finally established where this drama is headed and what sort of story we can probably expect. So far it feels a little bit like Two Weeks: Presidential Edition, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I loved Two Weeks, and if Three Days can keep up a similar pace and suspense level I’ll be a happy drama-watcher. I do find it a little funny that the leading lady is even the same, especially since she once again looks to be the only person our protagonist will be able to really count on. At least this time she’ll get into the action a little more (although I did think she made a good mommy).

My main concern with this show so far is that the stakes don’t feel high enough. In Two Weeks it was easy to care right off the bat. Who doesn’t want to save an adorable, terminally-ill little girl, and who doesn’t want to root for the deadbeat dad who is perfectly poised for redemption? Tae-kyung seems like a decent guy, and I genuinely like him, but I’m not really interested in his journey as a person. All those drama cliches regarding characters with haunted pasts exist for a reason (we’re all suckers for a wounded soul!) so I hope we learn more about Tae-kyung to really make us care about him and not just the intrigue surrounding the assassination attempt. I won’t even complain if he has a horribly cheesy history of failed romance that made him close himself off emotionally, and Bo-won is the only one who can warm the cockles of his heart…well…okay, so maybe I would complain a little. Lets shoot for the sky and cross our fingers for even better than that!

If Tae-kyung’s character doesn’t deliver, hopefully the plot will, and so far it’s off to a good start (despite some logical missteps regarding how EMPs work). Although pretty much everyone close to the president seems potentially evil, I was surprised that the Team Leader was revealed to us so quickly, and I do love a good surprise when it comes to action dramas. I’m trying not to get my hopes up, but I’d really like to see a cleverly interwoven story with lots of twists and turns to keep me on the edge of my seat. I’d be ecstatic if it wasn’t just a classic tale of good vs evil since shades of gray are so much more interesting (a la Heartless City). Now that I’ve made all my wishes and comparisons, I am going to try my best to just turn off my brain and enjoy the ride. I’ve found I’m usually happier just enjoying a drama for what it is, instead of pining away for what I’d like it to be.

One thing that did stand out to me throughout the first two episodes is that this role is pretty much perfect for Micky Yoochun. At this point in his career I think he has a somewhat limited range as an actor, but that range is very well suited to a to a rather stiff security agent who doesn’t even openly cry at his father’s death. I was actually pretty impressed with how well Micky conveyed some pretty heavy emotions while maintaining the facade of someone who prefers not to show those emotions in public (I always think such scenes must be tricky, since they essentially necessitate acting out two different things at once).

I still miss You From Another Star and I Need Romance 3, but I’m glad I have a new drama to keep me entertained in the weeks to come. Fun fact: this entire drawing is painted in shades of blue. Your brain will probably tell you that it sees pink or brown, but our brains are liars. Once again, click the image to see full size!

Hello Fanderay~

And thank you for this! I am liking 3 days so far, though I would agree that it is not perfect. I also do like PYC here, a lot. It is the best role I have liked him in, so far. I have been impressed with his crying scenes, and how he shows (or tries not to show) his emotions, as you stated.

I like the shades of blue you have going on there. They reflect (I think), how dark the drama is trying to be. We can barely recognize YC, and I am assuming that was intentional on your part. Like you, I am also keeping my expectations low, though I can't help having some questions when I watch the episodes. I am really loving the cast in this drama. I always love the veteran actors, and I am loving PHS and the other female as well (can't remember her name right now), and their characters.

I would like to amend my comment about not being able to recognize PYC. My computer screen was tilted back (when I 1st wrote my comment), so the image actually looked darker to me than it really is. I tilted it forward a little bit, and the image looked lighter. So that's interesting to me as well, that depending on how my computer screen is tilted (forward or backward), I get a different impression of the painting.

Also, thank you for letting us know that you actually used shades of blue for the whole painting. I did look at the full size, and I thought I saw his ears, lips and nose being some variations of pink.
Did you use blue for his face as well? I was just asking because his face looked beige to me (or something along that color).

Thank u so much for this..I dunno but I love Han Tae Kyung, I can feel that he is so lonely since no smile from him yet after Ep.4..so I really want to give him some hug..come to noona..
but gladly there is Bo Won with him..I know people will compare this drama with 2 weeks which I also love it to bits eventhough some chars are quite annoyed there..I only love dad & daughter in 2 Weeks but I can say I love all cast in 3 Days except his partner guard..He is so annoying and blabbermouth..haha..Yoochun is the biggest reason why I love 3 Days and he portrayed HTK pretty perfect there..His crying emotion is so heartbreaking yet beautiful but once he throws his fighting, we can feel his fighter spirit..his gaze giving me a shiver..

BTW, I love blue and blue is Yoochun's color..LOL!

Hello bluesky,

I will concur with you, and say that I too feel HTK's loneliness, and even his desperation (even more so after ep. 4), in wanting to find out why his father was killed, and at the same time, why the president has to be killed (team leader Ham didn't tell him everything, as he is slowly finding out, I think).

I haven't seen 2 Weeks (yet), so I can't compare this drama to it. I do like HTK (or rather PYC's) chemistry with BW (PHS), and how they work together, so far. It's my 1st time seeing PHS act, and I am liking her. I also loved what you said here, "His crying emotion is so heartbreaking yet beautiful but once he throws his fighting, we can feel his fighter spirit" and I agree with you. And like you, bluesky, I love his gaze in this drama, especially when he tilts his head down.

Hello August,

Thank you for your recommendation, I appreciate it. I will put that drama on my list of dramas to watch. I was on a break from dramas when 2 Weeks was airing. I will have to make an effort to watch it then. Three Days has been compared to Mandate of Heaven as well. I tried to watch that drama, however, I didn't stay with it (another drama I would like to eventually finish).
Did you watch that drama? If you did, would you recommend it?

MOH was an interesting drama..I love love love that drama so much but the problem is their acting especially from the lead..If u can bear their bad acting then u may add to watch list..I enjoyed Yoo Bin, Song Jong Ho & Kang Byul's performance the most..Even Im Seul Ong is quite good than the main lead..But overall it such a great drama..But I hate to compare coz I love MOH, 2 Weeks and now I'm moved with Yoochun's performance in 3 days..I want to catch up GG-14 days later..haha..all about numbers now..

@ August,

I hope you will see my response. This, "However, it’s on my to watch list (aka neverending pending queue)," I can totally relate too. I hear you so clearly on that one. I have a long list of dramas I would like to watch as well, and I don't know if I will ever get through all of it, so I tell myself that I am giving myself until I get really old to watch those dramas. I am not sure how realistic that is, none of us know how much longer we have on the planet.

@ bluesky,

It is neat to see your enthusiasm for MoH. I think I could stand the less than stellar acting, if the story is good. And as you said yourself, there are other actors and actresses who acted well, so I am thinking that the drama cannot be all that bad. I have a friend who keeps raving about Song Jong Ho. She thinks he should be a lead in a drama.
I have read a lot of good reviews about God's Gift-14 Days. *Sigh,* so many good dramas, so little time...

I can recognize my Chunnie in any get up or any hairstyle, and I have to say you painted him really well! :D so don't worry about people not recognizing him here!
I still have to watch 3 days OTL
Been too busy with work, just had time to catch up with God's gift : 14 days...I hope you paint Lee Boo Young's picture too because she is really brilliant here! :)

It'd be good if the pace of 3 days will be faster in the upcoming episodes. That's what I hope for this drama to be another very thrilling one after Two weeks. And of course, the characters are simply an important part for a script. The writer of Two weeks did a balanced good job on both interesting charaters and the compelling script execution. Can't get rid of the Two weeks sydrome yet... its movie like filming, thrilling action scenes, and the rocking soundtracks. My fav charaters... Jang Taesan, Soojin and Inhye~! The smart handsome daddy and the clever beautiful daughter & mommy, the perfect family ever in kdramaland~ lol
So, I'm waiting those of 3 days to be unfold as the complex ones, and a hero we can really care. Here, the cinematography is the main reason to swoon on this drama, it still needs some qualities to be a good thriller as the mentioned genre.

Show, I'm a fan of this genre... please make me sit on the egde of my seat!

Agree^^ 2 weeks was such a rollercoaster ride mixed with emotional vibes to grab the viewers' care, and all lead actors (even the little child actress) could amazingly convey thier emotions well till the end.
Undoubtedly, 3 days also has good actors to be portrayed as the characters with layers. This aspect really needs for kdramas bcoz most writers are still not at the level of creating the very logical and specific concepts to keep the audience interest as the western series. Wasn't drawn to the writers' previous projects but I've high hopes for this drama since it's with a time-span.
Looking forward to the chemistry of HTK with the president as it was well-promoted before the airing than with the female leads.
Also thumbs up to Fanderay for your drawing talents, could recognise yoochun :)

Hi! Just wanted to say how amazing your paintings are and that you're soooo talented! I really like how you just panted this in just blue shades which depict the drama tonally. Love your work and hope there's plenty more to come. (^_^)
Thank you! ?

Another drawing nicely done. Thanks for alerting us to the fun fact that the drawing was painted in shades of blue. It's great that ART can and sometimes does make it hard to differentiate between imitation and reality.

Two Weeks (aka 2 Weeks) spoiled me. It really was a high intensity action drama full of suspense and characters either motivated by guilt, love, family, justice, professional duty, and/or power.

I am watching Three Days (aka 3 Days) and trying to hold out and give it a chance. I really want it to get better because I like the characters of Park Yoo-Chun and Park Ha-Sun.

I would love to see you paint any of the following scenes/images from Two Weeks:

1) Jang Tae-San (Lee Joon-Ki) fleeing the multiple vehicle accident scene on motorcycle.

2) Jang Tae-San and Seo Soo-Jin (Lee Chae-Mi) together with one another at the hospital.

3) Jang Tae-San and Seo Soo-Jin conversing with each other in his subconscious.

4) Seo Soo-Jin, her crayons, her calendar, and the timestamp reminder.

5) Jang Tae-San, Seo Soo-Jin, and Seo In-Hye (Park Ha-Sun) from the camping trip.

6) Any image conveying the desperation, determination, and resourcefulness of Jang Tae-San.

So beautiful, Fanderay! This show has not hooked me yet but I really want it to. The female lead's character is more interesting to me thus far.

I do miss YFAS and INR3. I especially loved when Sweet Potato tried to hide the stuffed giraffe behind him but its head just hilariously too tall and loomed over him. That was by far my most favorite still as it just had me laughing. I was also hoping Running Man would pick up on this whole giraffe thing and do a parody with Lee Kwang Soo peering over Sung Joon. A gal can dream!

Sh-sh-shades of blue?! gawd, my mind was just deliberately telling me that there's brown and pink in there somewhere. Damn, it's not the drawing that I'm most impressed on, it's the way you blow my mind with the colour palette D:

Do you ever do darker scenes from dramas as sometimes those are the ones I'd most like to have pictures of. For instance in episode 2 of God's Gift when Soo Hyun is confronting the kidnapper or when she's on the cliff at the end with the thugs and Dong Chan on the dock.

that is so cool! like seriously, I want to print it out and frame it ^^

Anyway, the drama has me on edge and I think if you've seen episode 4, you'd seen that the stake is quite high. The President is on the verge of being either killed or framed. I think because it was quite slow and a lot of talking at first so you don't feel the tension, but the chase has just begun and I believe that it'll go up from here..

Seriously..your painting of Yoochun is pin point near perfection-eyelashes and slight bump on his nose included!

:O

It looks incredibly realistic. Even close up, it's hard to tell. But if I was just looking at the ear, I don't think I would be able to tell that it was a painting even if it were zoomed in.

But wow, can't believe it was all painted in shades of blue!! Still wondering how the pink and brown came to be.

Great job! Can't wait for more artwork :)

So very nice ...... and oh so calming, with all the shades of blue. Thank you for sharing this with us!

I remember the first time I saw Park Yoo-chun in Miss Ripley, back then I didn't even know who he was. ...... It's been interesting to see him in his various dramas.

Three Days begins here in 3 or 4 weeks ...... looking forward to it.

Hi tthere! I've always adored your painting, but never leave a comment here. But this time, I saw the name. You called him Micky Yoochun. Ah, it's been soooo long since I last heard anyone refers to him as Micky...nowadays it's just Yoochun or Park Yoochun, so thank you for that and please forgive this delusional fangirl of DB5K. ^_^
