Oh Yeon-seo and Kim Ji-hoon headline new weekend drama

Oh, Kim Ji-hoon, why must you repeatedly star in long weekend dramas that I won’t have the time or inclination to watch? MBC’s newest weekender called Jang Bori Is Here! has secured its main cast, and Kim Ji-hoon has signed on to star opposite Oh Yeon-seo (Medical Top Team), who will be headlining her first miniseries in the title role.

The new drama comes from writer Kim Soon-ok of Wife’s Temptation, Angel’s Temptation, and Five Fingers, who’s known for her addictive makjang dramas–you know, the kind that everyone curses at but watches and parodies. She’ll be working with PD Baek Ho-min of Flames of Ambition and May Queen. So… we’re pretty much in for some really overwrought melodrama, methinks.

It’s a Cinderella birth secret switcheroo tale, about a plucky heroine (Oh Yeon-seo) who witnesses a traumatic incident involving her mother and suffers from amnesia as a young child. She ends up lost and eventually gets adopted by a new family, where her stepsister, played by Lee Yuri (Your Woman) is jealous, evil, and ambitious. Of course she is. But then the stepsister ingratiates herself into a wealthy family, only to discover that the heroine is actually their birth daughter. Of course she is.

Kim Ji-hoon plays the chaebol hero they’ll both love. He’ll have an ambitious half-brother in Oh Chang-seok, who was in last year’s crazy daily drama Aurora Princess, and idol actor Han Seung-yeon (Her Lovely Heels) plays their little sister with a princess complex. Hm, the setup is SO obvious that they have to introduce crazy twists in the execution, right?

Jang Bori Is Here! follows Will You Love and Give It Away in April.

That was my first reaction too, why another weekend drama, Kim Ji Hoon?? But reading the description of the show consoled me. Sounds frustrating and tedious. Though Stars Falling From the Sky was plenty frustrating and I plowed through for him. Ugh, I don't know how to feel about this.

I really liked him in Stars falling from the Sky -- I loved his fussbudgetty character in the beginning of the show, how he totally ignores our heroine and pompously goes about his life, only to come to realize his softer side when he has to live with 5 extra children! One of my favorites! I also liked him in Flower boy next door, except he didn't get the girl which should of, even though Park Shin Hye was sorta milquetoastish in that show.

Wow, that plot sounds terrible.

I feel pretty bad when I see Kim Ji Hoon in makjang crap because he really does deserve better. I still remember his performance in the wonderfully eclectic Joseon X Files, and wish I could see him in something like that again. It really sucks that he doesn't seem to be offered roles in anything half-way decent nowadays :/

The premise sounds like everything melo all crushed into one...why do they keep making weekend dramas into these melo makjangapoolozas?!?! :/

Kim Ji-hoon in yet another weekend drama?? I'm curious as to why he keeps siding towards these...did he not get the memo from his experience with Goddess of Marriage?? (The only good one I've seen him in is Golden Era of Daughter-in-law, back when weekend dramas were actually good and watchable!). Even if he's one of my faves...I wouldn't put myself through watching this x/

When I first read the title, and saw that Oh Yeon-seo was starring...thought of her role in daily Oh Ja-ryong is Coming! from 2012, ha :P And Lee Yu-ri always seems to gravitate towards similar sounding weekend dramas or dailies...guess she likes this type of stuff x/

Me no thinks I'll watch, thankyouverymuch.

Too Bad for Kim Ji Hoon. After Goddess of Marriage, he's gonna be in a role with more drama...oh lord.
I wished that he would do something a long the lines of Wish Upon A Star. He's a really good comedic actor, and his real life personality is really funny.
I did manage through 50 episodes of Golden Era of Daughter in Law for him and Lee So Kyung, it's such a cute and realistic family weekend drama.
And as for Lee Yuri, she's in this type of role again. This is like the exact role that she played in Twinkle Twinkle.
I kinda like her I love you, Don't Cry, but that drama was just too long and dragged out. And you're right, she just one of those actresses who will always do weekend dramas.

as much as I HATE that he chose this, it's good for his career. These type of weekend dramas are loved by the Korean audience, so why would he NOT be in it?

If this was a KBS weekend drama, then I'd applaud his choice...but it's not. The high ratings (and subsequent love by the viewers) are typically for KBS's weekend slot, which has ruled that time slot for a while now. Wonderful Season, which is on currently, looks like it'll take it as well.

MBC hasn't faired particularly well here since who knows when (a few years ago, probably). Although I heard of people in Korea grumbling that MBC/SBS either only aired an episode per weekend during the Olympics for their respective shows...I would call that a smaller bracket of viewers who watch their shows. If KBS had put off one or both episodes, I think there would have been an uproar.

But I guess we'll see...although I was hopinggg that he would do a mini during the week. To be optimistic--at least he's working a lead actor role!

Makjangapalooza!

I'm ashamed to say that I've seen most of the dramas you've listed.

What can I say? Sometimes it's fun to watch a trainwreck. With liberal fast forwarding of course.

With KJH I'd be willing to give it a shot. At least there would be lots of pretty! :)

LOL at the "of course she is". The plot is ridiculously predictable, I can't even believe people still watch these kind of dramas. Its the ones that get the 30-40% too! I haven't liked an MBC drama in god knows how long.

That was my reaction also - when it starts right out of the gate with the amnesia cliché, you know it can only get worse. Over the past year or four, I have been tricked into watching far too many totally failed train wreck weekend dramas, I am not falling for this one. It sounds like the whole thing was specifically designed to be makjang to the max.

I feel like the only one who loves these things, sometimes. I dunno I like the comfort of weekend dramas. It's like an old friend, haha.

I'll probably watch this. Well...Kim Ji Hoon is in it so it's very likely I will watch it. Yaaaay handsome!

I also misread as "plucky" as "lucky" and was SOOO confused!

I love daily dramas XD They offer half an hour brainless entertainment every weekday, with the similar makjang-y storyline and similar actors.

Sometimes it's fun to watch the trainwrecks weekend dramas and turn your brain off while watching. I find it make especially great background noise. But when an actor I love who can do wonderful things is in it then im TOO invested in the show on principle and then the headaches ensue from all the shenanigans. So while this is something I could normally sit through, I can't now with Ji-Hoon in it. I just can't do it!

LOL, this is a magnificent train wreck waiting to happen, though I expect nothing else from MBC and with Lee Yuri attached as the money hungry second lead again, I already know this will be crazy. Pass.

It screams "Crazy" and "headache". Not worth my time. Too much going on and it'll probably get sloppy in the middle with too much to handle on the plate.

This one sounds sloppy even at the start. Amnesia, birth secrets, evil step sister - and all before it even airs. Of course, nobody will know that the heroine is REALLY who she is, so you will get to put up with that birth secret for probably 40 episodes.

Sometimes train wrecks are fun, but this one sounds a bit much.

It's so sad. I'd been hoping Kim Ji-hoon would star (rather than co-star and not get the girl) in another drama soon, but this isn't something that I'm going to want to watch. :-/

I always wonder what factors into drama decisions like this... is KJH not being offered roles for weekday dramas? Does this pay better or offer better job security? Is it a deal along the lines of "you star in this ansd we'll give you the lead role in that other drama that's coming up"...?

My vote is for the latter, provided the other drama in question is a zany-sweet romcom with an interesting and original premise. :-)

i like him a lot, though...
by the way, there's another weekend drama at the moment on Chosun tv, Bride of the century...could you please add it to the currently-airing drama list here? could someone recap it? it sounds cute...

Just so you know, it's considered uncool to ask for recaps around here. This isn't a recap-on-demand service-- they recap what they want to recap. We should be super grateful for the gifts that they give us, not asking for different gifts. If you read the recent Odds and Ends post, you'll see that they're especially overextended atm, which makes asking them to take on another drama seem rather insensitive. Fortunately, Bride of the Century is being recapped at A Koala's Playground. Also, not all dramas make it to the currently airing dramas list.

So is Kim Ji Hoon the son in the wealthy family that Lee Yuri ingratiates which would make him and Oh Yeon Soo siblings? Or was KJH swapped at birth with Lee Yuri? Just thought I'd ask? :)

Shuffle the deck, deal the cards, and it come out . . . Cinderella . . . birth switch . . . Chaebol prince . . . evil step-sister . . .

Rats, they left out the missing documents buried in a brass box under the fish market that would prove the president of Korea is secretly the grandson of Emperor Hirohito. And that only our hero, the secret service agent, knows he hates Ramyun.

The premise is so overdone and irritating that, even though I LOVE Kim Ji-hoon, I most likely will not watch this. Most likely, means I may still check it out, but maybe I won't finish it. If it's a miniseries, how long will that be? If it's on the weekend, it'll probably be pretty long, right?

Oh, Kim Ji-hoon, why can't you do a rom-com?! You do those so well! Next time, hopefully!

Omg, she annoyed the hell outta me in MTT...and because of said annoyance, I frequently FF'd whenever she was on.

Then she was coupled with Kwon Sang-woo, which further increased her screen time, ugh. Her shrill voice and overacting was similar to how she was in Unexpected You...which was odd because she was bearable in Oh Ja-rong is Coming. Eh, since I'm not even gonna watch...whatevers.

Dunno why she got so many offers, I found her acting so annoying in You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly which I accidently watched in kbsworld. Ouch why does it seem like almost no kdramas that appeal me these days.
