God’s Gift – 14 Days: Episode 15

With one episode (and one day) left to go, God’s Gift dishes out a lot of truths, answering our questions and dropping a lot of revelations into our laps. Barring a final reversal in the next episode, I’d say we finally have the full picture, though we’re far from solving the problems and wrapping things up—now it’s time for decisions to be made and fallout. That, and nailing the bad guys against the wall, which I admit I’m quite looking forward to. All that kidnapping, murdering, and victimizing has got me rather bloodthirsty for a bit of payback. Now, if only we can do that without condemning our heroes’ souls to perdition. C’mon, I know there’s gotta be a way…

EPISODE 15 RECAP

So, the final dilemma: Who do they save, Saet-byul or Dong-ho? Both Soo-hyun and Dong-chan need that jewelry evidence to save their loved ones, and for the first time they’re at odds with each other. For once Dong-chan can’t do as Soo-hyun asks; he’s sorry, but he has to save his brother.

In prison, Dong-ho harbors new hope—since his little brother is innocent after all, he’ll get to leave prison soon and live happily with his family once again.

For now, Saet-byul is being held in a dingy shack by Tattoo Hand Hwang Kyung-soo, who doesn’t intend to kill her—in fact, he seems rather fond of her and brings her toys while waiting for Ji-hoon to hand over the evidence.

While Saet-byul plays with the toys, Tattoo Hand sees his son in her place, remembering how he’d assembled Legos with his boy, back when his hand had been free of the revenge tattoo. He shows Saet-byul how to assemble some toys, and nods yes when she asks if he’ll send her home afterward. Cheered, she starts eating and playing.

Watching this entire exchange via video is the presidential chief of staff Lee Myung-han, aka Ji-hoon’s former boss who’d steered the Moojin case in the wrong direction. He reviews the casefiles and looks at profiles for Dong-chan, Dong-ho, and Young-gyu. Should I be worried that there’s a brain scan photograph attached to Dong-chan’s file?

Now we see that the president had given Chief of Staff Lee the task of investigating the Moojin photograph. Lee had been upset to hear that it originated from Te-oh and ordered mouths to be silenced.

The clock rolls over to a new day. Two days before the incident.

Ji-hoon meets Soo-hyun, who has the jewelry evidence in her possession. Did Dong-chan hand it over in the end? She has some lingering misgivings about Chief of Staff Lee acting alone—as in, without the president being involved. After all, she’s certain that Saet-byul had drawn the phoenix while kidnapped, which is the insignia on the president’s ring.

But Ji-hoon dismisses the idea of the president being involved; when he asks whether she can be completely positive about that drawing, Soo-hyun can’t answer.

Dong-chan visits his brother in prison to ask him about the day of Soo-jung’s murder. Thank god he’s finally doing this, calmly and logically, asking for facts beyond his assumptions. Dong-ho retreats into himself, scared to confront his memories, but Dong-chan presses him to try. He adds that he’ll bring Young-gyu tomorrow, which makes Dong-ho brighten immediately.

Flashback to ten years ago in Moojin. Dong-chan leaves after his fight with Soo-jung, while his brother lingers behind at the front door. Soo-jung snaps at Dong-ho to leave her alone, though she lets Dong-ho put a watch on her wrist that he says is Dong-chan’s. Then she heads back inside, while Dong-ho decides to stand guard outside until Dong-chan returns.

Dong-ho falls asleep outside, and when he wakes he peers inside the building and sees empty liquor bottles on the floor. It takes him a moment to realize what he’s seeing, with a man struggling on top of a woman. His hands automatically snap a picture before he runs away, and since the man was wearing Dong-chan’s jacket he assumes that it was his brother in a drunken rage.

Dong-ho returns to the building and is further horrified to find Soo-jung’s bloody body now lying dead on the floor. Frantic and crying, he carries the body to the lake, telling himself that nobody will take his brother away if he hides it.

That’s the scene Dong-chan witnesses, and as he races to the body Dong-ho tells him, “Dong-chan, you didn’t do this, I did. I did this.”

In the present, Dong-chan tries to understand. Even if Dong-ho thought he killed Soo-jung, he didn’t believe Dong-chan killed all three Moojin women—so why admit to all three murders? Dong-ho cries, “Somebody told me if I didn’t say I did it, they would put you away.” But he doesn’t know who it was, only calling him a scary ajusshi.

Dong-chan breaks down, wishing to god his brother had told the truth back then. Dong-ho cries, “I’m sorry… I’m sorry for being stupid. I did the wrong thing again, didn’t I? I shamed you again, didn’t I? I’m sorry for being your hyung.”

Dong-chan’s mind flashes back to that childhood day when his brother made him the ultimate ddakji, and he’d told his friends Dong-ho wasn’t his brother. Now he cries, “No, I’m sorry.” But Dong-ho tries to smile through his sobs and tells him not to cry: “If you didn’t do it, that’s enough for me. It’s okay if I die. I’m not scared at all.”

Dong-chan insists that his brother won’t die and asks him to hang in there until he can pull him out of prison. With that he leaves, a man on a mission.

Soo-hyun and Ji-hoon are, for now, working as a united front to get Saet-byul back. She meets with the chief of staff’s man with the evidence, while Ji-hoon meets with the kidnapper to retrieve Saet-byul. Soo-hyun demands the child returned first, and the man makes a phone call to see to it.

When Tattoo Hand gets the go-ahead, he tells Saet-byul to go on to her father, and she races into Daddy’s arms. Ji-hoon tells Soo-hyun over the phone that she’s been handed over, and the reunion is sweet.

Soo-hyun hands over the evidence, her attention fixated on the phone call to check that Saet-byul’s fine. But suddenly Ji-hoon yelps, a crash sounds, and Saet-byul screams. The henchman heads back to Soo-hyun, his face grim. This is going downhill fast…

Ji-hoon gets shoved to the ground as Tattoo Hand smashes in his window and carries Saet-byul off again. Ji-hoon’s too hurt to go after them, and can only watch helplessly as she screams for him.

Soo-hyun’s car door is wrenched open and the henchman slaps her across the face, accusing her of handing over fakes. Knowing that Saet-byul was taken again, she grabs onto his leg and demands her return, clinging stubbornly despite his fierce kicks, mirroring that day when she’s been beaten in the subway from the fake ransom artist.

Dong-chan arrives at the police station with the real evidence in hand, ready to turn it in but hesitating at the last moment. Looking miserable, he remembers Saet-byul asking if he was going to be her savior.

Ji-hoon calls, almost incoherent with apologies and pleas for Dong-chan to help. He’d had duplicates made, but Soo-hyun was injured because of it. Grimly, Dong-chan just says, “I don’t want to hear it” and hangs up.

But he can’t ignore that news, and turns up at the hospital where Soo-hyun is laid up in bed. He orders Ji-hoon to meet him outside, then proceeds to beat the stuffing out of him for subjecting Soo-hyun and Saet-byul to pay the price for his actions. Ji-hoon is just frantic for help and begs for the evidence to save Saet-byul, kneeling before him in tears.

Ultimately Dong-chan can’t turn his back on Saet-byul and growls in frustration before conceding, asking for the baddies’ phone number. Tattoo Hand soon gets a text to come to a demolition site with Saet-byul—the same site of their prior confrontation—and heads over, assuring Saet-byul that she’ll be home soon.

Dong-chan’s waiting in the yard, and holds out the bag containing the real evidence. But before any trade can happen, the bag flies into the air—yanked by the fishing line it’s attached to, reeled in by Byung-tae from the nearby building. Dong-chan orders Byung-tae to get Saet-byul while he takes care of Tattoo Hand, since he has unfinished business with his girlfriend’s killer.

With that, Dong-chan launches himself at Tattoo Hand and the men begin fighting. Byung-tae grabs Saet-byul, but as the exit is blocked by an approaching army of gangsters, they run toward the condemned buildings, finding cover inside.

Byung-tae instructs Saet-byul to hide here until he and Dong-chan collect her. He takes her jacket and wraps it around a large stuffed animal to act as decoy, then runs off to head off the gangsters.

Outside the fight continues, and while both sides land some heavy blows, it’s looking like Dong-chan is weathering the brunt of the beating, struggling to free his neck from chokehold. He manages to throw him off, though, turning the tide, and Dong-chan ends up kneeling on top of Tattoo Hand, pummeling him. He screams at him for killing Soo-jung and framing his brother, ordering him to confess.

Tattoo Hand gasps out, “I didn’t kill her.” Aha! Dong-chan hardly believes him, though, and continues to punch him until he’s struck in the back of the head with a two by four. He collapses.

The rest of the gangsters join Tattoo Hand, having lost Byung-tae but suspecting that the girl is hidden nearby. So the gangsters tie Dong-chan up and position him at the edge of a pit, whereupon Tattoo Hand calls out for Saet-byul, using Dong-chan as bait to lure her.

Dong-chan yells counter-orders, saying that this is a game that they’ll win if she stays hidden. (Aw, he even calls her bride.) Even when he gets kicked into the pit and smothered with cranefuls of dirt, Dong-chan keeps yelling at Saet-byul to stay put. She fights her own impulse to run and out blocks her ears against Tattoo Hand’s words that Dong-chan will die if she doesn’t come out, and repeats to herself that she has to do as Dong-chan says and stay hidden.

But Saet-byul can’t leave Dong-chan to die, just as he couldn’t leave her to die, and she gives herself up. He looks up in horror as she bargains with the bad guys: “If I go with you, you’ll save him, right?” Tattoo Hand nods, and she takes his hand to leave.

Byung-tae arrives with Ho-gook to dig Dong-chan out of his grave, and Dong-chan blasts him for not giving up the evidence to save Saet-byul. But Byung-tae knows what that evidence means to him and insists, “Hyung, you’re more important to me than that girl.” Aw, I wonder if the violence of Dong-chan’s reaction is enhanced by knowing that he’d made the same choice, even though he’s now angry about it.

It’s now that he puts the pieces together, recalling that cafe owner’s prediction told to Soo-hyun—that one of the two must die for this to end. It’s either Saet-byul or his brother, he realizes with sinking understanding. And it’s his choice to make.

Dong-chan heads to the hospital next, where he finds Soo-hyun in a fitful sleep, crying for Saet-byul. She snaps awake after Dong-chan is already gone… but finds the evidence he’d left behind in her hand.

Soo-hyun runs out of the hospital calling Dong-chan’s name, but doesn’t see him. He can see her from his car, where he puts in a call to tell Tattoo Hand that Soo-hyun will soon bring him the evidence. Even having made this choice, Dong-chan he vows not to give up on saving his hyung and warns the baddies to be ready to deal with him after the girl is returned.

Grandpa/CEO Chu meets with Chief of Staff Lee and chides him for resorting to child kidnapping now, telling him to return the girl. Lee says calmly that all will be returned to peace and harmony soon, but Grandpa Chu says he won’t abide anymore of this: “Do you think I kept my mouth shut all this while because of money or reputation? No. It was for my foolish son. But no more.”

Chief of Staff Lee warns that he’d face losing everything, but Grandpa Chu is unmoved: “I don’t have much time left to live anyway. You think I care about that?”

But Lee isn’t done, adding that Grandpa’s daughter-in-law and grandson sure do seem happy living in the States. Grandpa Chu is enraged at the implied threat to their safety and clutches at his weak heart, but Lee knows he’s got him.

Dong-chan watches at a distance as Soo-hyun arrives at the drop point and hands off the evidence. Saet-byul isn’t with Tattoo Hand, but he declares that if the evidence is real, the girl will be returned. Soo-hyun hands over the bag, but is far from trusting his words and slaps handcuffs on his wrist, chaining them together. She demands to be taken to her daughter directly.

Dong-chan grimaces at this complication but follows the two of them in his car. As they ride together, Soo-hyun finds a dropped toy in the car with Saet-byul’s name on it, which mollifies her a bit. As does seeing Saet-byul’s note on Tattoo Hand’s bandage, which reads, “Please get better soon.”

She tells Tattoo Hand that she knows he’s doing this because of his son, and starts telling him the story of how she worked to cover his son’s murder trial, which is also how she met her husband. Ji-hoon had been completely devoted to the boy’s case, she says, and had been committed to making the criminal pay.

“I understand you feeling betrayed by him,” she says. “After working to get that death sentence, and now opposing the death penalty…”

Tattoo Hand interrupts, saying he doesn’t bear a grudge against Ji-hoon, who did his best. We see in flashback that he’d also been there at the courthouse to see Ji-hoon’s silent protest in the rain. He’d also worked side by side with Ji-hoon throughout the trial, poring over documents together, and they’d cried together in relief when the rich bastard was given his sentence.

But for ten years, the criminal lived on in prison, going so far as to taunt Tattoo Hand on a visit, laughing about how the boy cried for his father before he killed him. Enraged, Tattoo Hand had vowed to make him hang.

A flashback clues us in on Tattoo Hand’s motivation, as Chief of Staff Lee informs him that his son’s killer will be on the list of those facing execution, in exchange for his help now. Lee orders him to help the Gangnam Serial Killer (aka Cha Bong-seob) escape from police custody, at which point another man will kill him. Then, Tattoo Hand is to kill Cha’s killer using an Angel Foundation vehicle. Ah, so two birds with one stone—shutting mouths and collecting ammunition against Grandpa Chu.

Tattoo Hand is reluctant to go along with it, but Lee promises to make his son’s killer first on the execution list. He blames Grandpa Chu’s opposition for being the principal reason the president has been unable to make any headway with the death row list—hence the need to weaken Grandpa’s stance.

Tattoo Hand and Soo-hyun arrive at the shack, only to find that it’s empty. She accuses him of double-crossing her, but is that surprise on his face too? He works free of his handcuffs and shoves her aside, and when Soo-hyun jumps in front of his car to block his exit, he doesn’t look inclined to stopping. As the car lurches forward, it’s Dong-chan who jumps in to pull her out of its path.

Dong-chan races off after him while Soo-hyun looks around the shack. Among the toys, she finds something interesting: In the Lego house, Saet-byul has drawn… a camera?

That clues her into something, and Soo-hyun races home to Saet-byul’s room. She fishes out the hidden camera planted there to watch the footage.

Reviewing it with Dong-chan and Byung-tae, she sees how Saet-byul had three photos from Young-gyu’s camera, not two. Then Saet-byul looks at the camera to address Dong-chan ajusshi, wondering at the meaning of the strange photos . She holds them up to the camera so he can see.

The first two photos we’ve seen, but the third photo is new—it’s a variant of the Moojin photo, only now we get to also see the person taking the photo. And whaddaya know, it wasn’t Tattoo Hand behind the camera but the president’s son, Kim Joon-seo. We’ve seen him in snippets before, most prominently at the presidential event where Soo-hyun had briefly taken the president’s granddaughter hostage with a banana. That was his daughter.

This means that our First Son Kim Joon-seo is Soo-jung’s killer, and the president has been in on this whole conspiracy to protect him. He’d intended to bury that crime by executing Dong-ho, only to have the jewelry evidence resurface and alerting Ji-hoon’s suspicions. That’s why the president went to such extremes to kidnap Saet-byul and recover the evidence.

But there are loose threads niggling at Soo-hyun, and she wonders why Saet-byul hasn’t been returned. If they handed over the evidence, then why would the president not return the child?

A news report catches their attention. It’s First Son Kim Joon-seo in a hospital bed with his family, assuring the public that he and his daughter are both safe. Soo-hyun connects the dots: Saet-byul was held in a room with a television, so she would have recognized Kim Joon-seo on TV as the man in her photo.

Sure enough, one of her captors spots Saet-byul’s photo and interrogates her about what they mean. Scared, Saet-byul says that she honestly doesn’t know. But as Chief of Staff Lee watches the questioning, he decides that Saet-byul does know: “We’ll have to take care of her.”

Soo-hyun and Dong-chan race to Kim Joon-seo’s hospital wing and ask his guards to pass along an envelope. The son’s eyes widen at the photos inside, his hand trembling as he recognizes himself.

That, at least, earns Dong-chan and Soo-hyun a private meeting with him. Dong-chan grabs him by the shirt and checks for a scar on his collarbone, then demands to know if he’s the real killer. Maybe he’s puffed up on power or maybe he’s really a psycho, but Kim Joon-seo seems rather amused as he readily admits, “Yeah, I killed that chick. Then I dumped the crime on your moron brother. So?”

Flashback (I know, more flashbacks) to Moojin that day. Kim Joon-seo drive down with two Seoul friends, meeting a fourth (our psych ward buddy Jin-woo) in Moojin for a fishing event. They receive souvenir watches and settle in, noticing Soo-jung since she’s pretty and inviting her to join the photo.

Dong-ho hovers around her with his camera, and when the friends call him mentally deficient, it’s Kim Joon-seo who takes offense. One friend discloses that he has a limp and is sensitive at being called handicapped, having been often mocked with the nickname Hephaestus (a Greek god with a lame foot).

The Seoul buddies get drunk that night, and when Kim Joon-seo awakens amidst empty bottles in a darkened room, he shivers in the cold and pulls on a jacket. They must have crashed the place because Soo-jung is frightened to come by and see strangers passed out there, gasping in alarm. In his hurry to shut her up, Kim Joon-seo shoves her down and covers her mouth.

She bites him and screams at him to get off, calling him a cripple—and that triggers a well of rage in him. He gets back on top of her and starts strangling her violently. She swings at him with her knife, only managing to nick him near the collarbone.

Immediately in the aftermath, rage turns to sniveling fear and Kim Joon-seo scrambles away from the building, horrified with himself. When his phone rings, he cries, “I killed someone. I’m scared. Please help me.” It’s Chief of Staff Lee who collects him, promising to take care of everything.

So now the whole story’s out. Kim Joon-seo laughs in his face that Dong-chan should’ve just kept quiet and saved his brother a lot of pain in prison. Furious, Dong-chan shoves him onto the bed and grabs his neck in a stranglehold, while Kim Joon-seo goads him to kill him already.

Dong-chan tightens his hold and starts choking the life out of him, and Soo-hyun darts forward to try to pull him off. But Dong-chan’s grip is strong and his rage in full force, and he growls, “Die!”

The clock rolls over again, and now we’re on our final day.

COMMENTS

So now we know. And truth be told, the real story is kind of anticlimactic given all the red herrings that were strewn in our path along the way, which were often more complex and hinted at darker things than the truth eventually turned out ot be… Although, I suppose I can live with this version of events even if some of the red herrings would have been narratively more interesting, inasmuch as I don’t actually want Dong-chan to be a blackout murderer or Ji-hoon to be a heartless father (yeah he sucks in many ways but I don’t think his moral failings have to be mutually exclusive with him being a loving father).

I do feel like this drama got really caught up in needing to be a twist ahead of us every step of the way, and that drive actually got in its own way, because I swear I’m paying about as close attention to the details as anyone could and I find this show’s execution of the twists to be confusing. Often it isn’t until a clue plays out way later that I get what the initial beat was meant to indicate, and it’s not for a lack of trying to puzzle it out—there have been so many scenes that I pause to work out in the moment and find confusing until much later down the line. Like a curious close-up on something I know is meant to mean something important, and yet for the life of me it looks like nothing. (Case in point: Saet-byul’s Lego drawing, which led Soo-hyun to the hidden camera in her room.)

As a result, I do think this show started to lose a bit of steam in the last couple of weeks, partially because there were just too many chess pieces in play whose purpose was left cloudy, and partially because omg how many more murderers were you going to spring on us? I swear I have serial killer fatigue, and when a show about serial killers fails to stir fear or anxiety in the viewer, something has gone awry.

Still, I won’t argue that I haven’t enjoyed this show thoroughly, and despite the excess of names and killers and suited thugs parading through it, the show does do well in anchoring the action in character moments. In this episode it was Dong-chan’s big dilemma, bearing the burden of two people’s lives and feeling that either way would lead to misery and injustice for someone. I loved the conflict of putting him in this impossible fix and watching him struggle to figure out which way to act. There was even a moment when I felt a dip of disappointment in Dong-chan, thinking he’d slipped Soo-hyun the fake evidence, and then when we were told that was Ji-hoon’s doing, I felt ashamed of myself for doubting him. It sounds sadistic (or masochistic), but I really dig when a show manipulates my emotions in a situation like that, when it accomplishes that reversal moment effectively (as long as it makes narrative sense, and isn’t a mere cheap twist).

I was actually expecting something of this sort to befall Soo-hyun, since she is the center of the show and you’d think she’d be the one to carry the burden of a Sophie’s choice moment. I see why it works this way, since she’s always been the single-minded mother and it would ring false for her to even consider not going in 100 percent for Saet-byul. I do wonder if it was a missed opportunity to not explore her reaction to this one-or-the-other choice, though—she needn’t struggle to choose the other way, but maybe I want to see her suffer a little for causing Dong-chan’s suffering.

In any case, we’ve got one more episode to see how the dilemma works out, because despite the prophecy, I’m not convinced that one of the two innocent lives must die. Because even though Soo-hyun has a tendency to piss off Fate and maybe even help it along with her recklessness, if anyone can thwart Fate, I’m putting my money on Captain Awesome.

I really wish they'll be together but at the same time, I'm glad there's no romance. It would feel like the writer is trying to forcing romance onto the leads. And I don't really think Soo Hyun has time to fall in love with another guy with her child getting kidnapped and all.

but I secretly wish they'll give us an open ending with regards to their relationship (like hinting that they developed some sort of feelings towards one another during the two weeks)
(that is, of course, if they both live...)

Thanks JB!! I wonder if someone noticed the Chief of Staff holding Dong Chan's portfolio and among other things, brain scans. Why does that make me super worried??? Are all drama world brain scans hints to predisposed illness/ noble sacrifice, since I am about to die anyway?

I am possibly over thinking this. But with one episode left, I don't want my Dong Chan to die!!!!

I finally got around watching the show with the English subs, after I tried watching it live, but pretty much failed miserably because of the stalling of the stream LOL. Thank you so much as always for the very awesome and speedy recap! If anyone from the Viki Gifted Team is reading this as well - you guys are awesome. Even though today was probably the fastest episode subbing since the show started, there was never a Monday/Tuesday without having the subs 100% ready by the end of the day, so I really thank you for all your effort, especially since I was always so eager to watch the show ASAP.

Only one episode left, I will miss all this :( . Finally we get most of the answers and many of them are those we were expecting all along.

1) One thing that’s bothering me is that the first timeline still doesn’t make too much sense. I understand in this one why the jewels are not enough to save SB, but in the first timeline, the father only figures out who did it 49 days after her death, so at no point did he seem to be threatened while she was still alive. There were no jewels involved, since they were only discovered in this timeline in CBS's house by DC and SH and so far, there isn’t a logical explanation for her recorded cry on the first timeline. And how could she have possibly recognized him on TV, if she never had the pictures in first place in the previous timeline? Unless she never said anything about them and picked them up when she goes to fix YG's camera, but that's a bit of a stretch. Same for the ripped diary page – in the first timeline, the page ripped off is one from the middle of it while now the last ones were ripped. I thought it was because she attended two different Snake concerts in both timelines (the one at the event for the disabled and the rain concert) and probably she saw the same things on different occasions. The writer seems to have focused too much on this timeline without thinking of bringing more coherency to the previous one, even if it only lasted for 2 episodes.

2) There is a keychain from the Angel Foundation found together with the bloody shoe and puzzle piece in the first timeline, yet now the shoe has been discovered without it. We’ve seen that Wrist has it attached to his phone, so how come she already had it in the first timeline before actually being taken away by him, since the planting of the objects happens while she is in a safe place thanks to her father? Well, not that “safe”, but you know what I mean :P .

3) Omo omo, what’s up with the brain scan of Dong-chan??? It’s clearly his, since the Secretary had three separate files for DC, DH and YG and the computer scanner is attached to DC’s file. God, NOOOOOOOOOO, please tell me he is not going to die, my heart can’t take it! I wonder if that’s the proof that the blackouts were actually caused by a drug that he took without knowledge, thus making his memory unreliable. I hope that there lies the explanation of some induced blackouts, as in he got himself checked out, but LMH bribed the doctor to never reveal to him that the blackouts were induced by a drug of sorts and just let him believe they were naturally happening, taking the real medical report himself.

Screencap of the scan: http://imageshack.com/a/img845/6057/vyr6.png

Also, now he really needs to remember what happened on the night he got SB’s hairpin. Please tell me they are not going to use the typical melo scenario with him being terminally ill. It’s clear that one important character will die, since the prophecy keeps being mentioned – I wish DC could kill that bastard Hephaestus and be done with it, but I guess not. If he has an illness, it’s probably so that his sacrifice will look less painful, because he would die anyway. But PLEAAAAAAAAAAAASE show, I am not ready to cry buckets of tears :(( :(( :((. I also don't know if the Secretary actually has those files of the family because SJ was DC's lover or because there is a personal agenda against them, since DC seemed to be framed on several occasions - after all, how could the Secretary have anticipated the kidnapping of YG, so that he can pinpoint something on DC? Maybe he promised that kidnapper to put DH on death row, just like he did with Wrist's son, in exchange of taking YG as a hostage.

4) We were right on so many things, starting with the Secretary and the president’s son. Good job, all :). And of course, the mastermind of all this, just like I thought, never got his hands dirty, but always asked someone else to do the job on his behalf. It amazes me how he managed to blackmail most of the characters, although in some cases, we don’t know how he did it (Nanny). He blackmailed WJ with revealing that he shot YG, he blackmailed Min-ah with revealing her affair, he blackmailed Gramps with revealing what his son did, he threatened DH to confess to the other murders as well and he promised Wrist to put that killer on death row.

5) DC and DH’s scenes always move me. This one was nothing short of amazing. “I am sorry for being stupid” absolutely broke my heart. And it was so painful to watch SH getting beaten up again in the same fashion as it happened in the first timeline in that train station. Speaking about fights, I really liked the choreography of the fighting sequences between DC and wrist.

6) The burial of DC pretty much mimics the drowning which happened in the first timeline, so I guess that at least they will spare us this sight.

4. I don't think there is an agenda against DC or his family. The CoS probably knows them and has information on them because of their connection to SJ.

5. He may have threatened Nanny using the safety of her daughter's family.

8. So you're saying that SJ was not really dead when the President's son left her. She came around and then the CoS killed her to avoid her speaking up? That is a good twist! But I feel like the person in the photo is young :O

10, 11. I'm sad if Grandpa is dying but I can bear it. However, I absolutely cannot bear DC's death!! I will be soo mad at the writer! I'm excited to watch this episode with subs after reading these two points. Haha. I somehow missed those scenes when I watched it raw! I totally ship DC and SH and want a happy ending for them together with SB!! :D

7) SB really stepped up her game ever since she got kidnapped. She matured greatly in all this time. Awww, poor thing, sacrificing herself so that ajusshi can be saved. And she even got attached to her kidnapper, even writing on his wrist to Get well soon, which I sort of found to be sweet, because it’s obvious that while she was kidnapped, at no point did anyone ever want to harm her, just like I suspected. I even feel bad for Wrist in a certain way, because he does all this so that he can avenge his son’s death.

8) Also, there is something strange going on with DH's picture of the strangling. In the picture SH sees at the studio, the killer is wearing black trousers. When DH tells how it all happened, we see him enter the house and witness the strangling, but when he tries to take a picture, the shutter doesn't go off. What DH sees is the president's son with the white trousers, so it couldn't possibly be the moment when he takes the picture. In the same image, it seems like SJ has a knife in her hand and not the attacker. Also, the moment DH takes SJ's body, the candles were not melted, just like they were when he takes the picture - it's as if this happened minutes after DC left. The studio pic looks more like the Secretary.

Screencap with explanations: https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1366x265q90/834/suqd.png

9) Just how corrupt can the police be, as to completely disregard the phone call for SB’s rescue? Without WJ there, no one even bothers – NO ONE. He (+ HG) really is, like, the least corrupt of all the corrupts. Speaking about police, what is HG’s brother hiding?? It’s the same guy working as a prison guard of sorts, who told SH about DH’s mouse, when she asks why he was looking at her legs - an explanation I never quite bought, although we know the mouse exists. . He also mentions that DH is one of the 3 MYSTERIES of that jail – we don’t know anything about the other two. And as he leaves decided to do something to offer HG a better life, he suspiciously hides something in his notebook, which HG checks.

10) Swooooooooon when DC is afraid to caress SH in hospital, as if he is afraid to come to terms with his own feelings towards her. And as soon as SH wakes up and starts to frantically look for him – that’s the first time I really felt she was warming up to him beyond the “He is my partner/best friend/savior/hero”.

11) I think we can now say RIP to gramps and I bet this time he left all his fortune to DC – maybe that money won’t actually be used to cure YG (which in real life is pretty much impossible), but DC, in case he is suffering from something. Pleaaaaaaaaase show, I want SH and DC to read SB “The Story of a Mother”, with the modified ending written by DC.

12) I hope that they recorded everything the President’s son said, after they used technology on a constant basis. As for SJ’s murder, who, btw, was a pretty nasty person – Hephaestus does the strangling and the boys drugged of their minds (just like I anticipated) might have done the rest with the stabbing, probably under the pressure of the Secretary (who recalls the stabbing) or because of the strong drugs they took. After all, Yoo-jin says there were 3 stabs (maybe per person) and we can see she was actually stabbed 9 times, just like DC said. This explains why they were traumatized by the events only 5 years later, after the death of Snake’s brother – they probably didn’t remember they were a part of it at all and somehow found it out. This is also why Gramps protected his son all along. I knewwwww it, that “candy” was up to no good. While it’s cruel to mock Hephaestus for his limp, there is no excuse for what he did, especially since he is not even sorry for doing it – he is only sorry for being caught.

13) So, apparently, the mysterious jacket which was present in DC's recounting of the event, but not in the CCTV appears in the Secretary's hand when he enters the house...hmmm. Also, the picture that DH takes of the strangling features someone else, since the president's son had white trousers, while in the picture, there is a man with black ones instead.

14) No WJ today :( *sigh*

In this case it would be laughable if DC and SH managed to record the president's son, c'mon he's the president's son, the guards must have frisked them thoroughly before sending them in to meet him, unless they used some very sophisticated technology to record him and explain how they were able to do that i would find it very ridiculous. Tbh, it's better not to expect DC and SH to have recorders in them in this situation.

I don't think that most Korean writers are unaware of the current technology, it's just that they don't like to use it so that they can extend the story. They only use technology where they think is fit to use it. I don't mind it to be honest.

#12
I believe the guys always were aware of what had happened that night. They didn't forget it for 5 years. They never spoke of it because they feared for their lives. Jin Woo's mother had said that he became a recluse around the time they visited Mu Jin; and after Tae Oh's brother died, he started to get worse; JW was scared that he would be the next victim. (Tae Oh's brother didn't die in an accident. He was gonna reveal the truth and was killed). And Doo Jin committed suicide unable to bear the burden any longer. That's my understanding. Your explanation of how the stabbing happened makes sense. Their part in the crime can be why Jin Woo was traumatized ever since.

Thanks, buticut, you clarified a lot of elements that were bothering me throughout, I did not let the omissions disrupt the thrill. YET, why did they make it seem like everyone was a killer, and what about the stock men in black gangsters with sticks popping up? Why are the police so inept in these dramas? they all swarm into a crime scene, ruining evidence, arresting the wrong people, and then back and the station there are two detectives manning the place?
The glaringly obvious issue with the photographs just about ruined it for me. I need a few more appearances of Ginny to soften things. I sure hope 16 does not disappoint and that they do wrap it up a bit better than this episode. Hate to see it end, but some of the script issues started to lessen the fun. Still had time to enjoy the ride when I just went along with it scene by scene and stopped thinking. I hate it when I have to stop thinking.

1. SB might have been kidnapped right away by the kidnapper in the first timeline. Then she somehow managed to escape from him and came across Snake's van, Grandma, YG, and JH. She was again captured by the tattoo hand and was drowned in an attempt to escape - either from tattoo hand or another one of the baddies.....................................In the second timeline, DC says that CBS was hanging around YG because of his guilt of what he did (indirectly) to DH. CBS killed Mimi too because he believed that that was avenging YG (Very twisted, I know). We can speculate that in the first timeline CBS felt remorse about what happened in DH’s case because of YG. He then contacts someone in the authority to hand over the evidence anonymously, before his escape to another country. And a mole leaks this info to the bad guys and CBS is killed in an “accident” hours before his flight to Philippines. Another possibility is that CBS contacts JH and JH threatens the Chief of Staff. In that case, it makes sense why CBS was killed and why SB was kidnapped. We didn’t see many characters/factors in the first timeline because the “good” guys didn’t come to know of CBS there; perhaps except for JH. Things are different in the second timeline because SH and DC are trying to alter fate...........................In the first timeline also, JH knew of the tattoo hand but he didn't connect him and SB's kidnapping until 49 days after her death. He saw his and MA's photos again and figured out that the person wanting the evidence, the person who sent him the photos, and the person who kidnapped his daughter are the same. Sounds a bit stretched but that's how I make sense of it :)

2. Interesting point. I haven't watched this episode with subs yet. My explanation is that if SB was actually kidnapped right away then, she may have got hold of the key chain during a struggle to escape.

3. I seriously hope that there is nothing wrong with DC!!

EP15 lost a bit of momentum - perhaps because so many of the loose ends were tied up all at once.

Since we pretty much know what and why it all happened now, I am hoping that the final episode conclusion does not go off into makjang-land. An ideal situation would be where all the bad guys are put into a cage match with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre guy, but I fear that will not happen.

I don't want to watch the last episode today because that means no more Captain Awesome =( This show introduced me to the awesome Jo Seung Woo and I want more of him in dramaland! And I just love DC, SH and SB together! Team SB FTW =)

And I don't know about any of you but for me DC's 'Are you done talking' was pretty hot! I mean itwas pretty threatening but damn... He could threaten me like that any day^^ Though I really hope SH can stop him from killing psycho president's son! DC is not a killer!

So here's to Captain Asweome kicking Fate's ass today because I don't want any of our good guys to die! And I seriously need DC, DH and YG united and happy! Well and SH and SB too (maybe with DC?! - time skip would be appreciated this time^^)

In this case, it's more logical to think they have no recorder on them than to expect they have it otherwise it would be very laughable.

It looks like most of the major mysteries have been tied up, so hopefully tomorrow should be almost all resolution instead of explanation. There is still the issue of Dong-chan's black-outs and Saet-byul's hairpin, though I'm guessing the brain scan Chief of Staff Lee was looking at has something to do with it.

I like that the explanation for Soo-jung's murder and Saet-byul's kidnapping ties together most of the plot lines-- the President, the grandpa, the death penalty and even serial killer Cha Bong-seob. That being said, it also leaves some plot holes:
1) The original timeline. I've pretty much given up trying to figure out what happened then. Did Cha Bong-seob try to tell the truth about Soo-jin's murder before he fled the country in the original timeline? Because he was under no suspicion at all, yet he still died. Or was Saet-byul's kidnapping back then purely motivated to bring about the death penalty to tie up loose ends?
2) Unless I'm mistaken, Soo-jung's murder and the whole cover-up took place ten years ago. But the President was elected only about a year ago, so back then how did his son have enough pull to cover up his crime? Was Chief of Staff Lee that close to his father? Was his father re-elected? Because "I'm the Presidential candidate's son" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

1) Yup, I have the same issue.
2) It's strange that the first thing on his mind is to call the secretary and not his father. Usually, in such a situation, you call the closest person, yet he calls him, who apparently is not related to him. Apparently. Not to mention that the Secretary seems to go to great lengths to cover his murder - why does he bother this much for him?? I wonder what function did the president have back then, since he most certainly wasn't one yet (the presidential term is 5 years, I think).

I might have heard this wrong, but didn't the son call him 'hyung'? I guess they might be close back then.. How, that's another question.

At this point I will just consider 1st timeline to serve as hints dropping, since they have changed so many things in 2nd timeline, it'd be hard to tell exactly what happened back then. We can only speculate. I'm still waiting for the hair pin to be explained though.

i think the secretary called First Son, instead of the other way around. First Son looked like maybe he was going to drown himself after killing SJ, but then he received that call.

10 years ago, the president was an up-and-coming politician, so he was already a pretty influential figure. he and the secretary must have been close even back then, because the First Son calls him "ajusshi." even now, the president and the secretary speak informally to one another when they are by themselves. how far they go back, who knows.

my theory is that the secretary was a supporter of the current president back then—he wanted to see him rise even higher in politics. maybe the president was planning to run for president even back then. if First Son became embroiled in a murder case, the scandal surely would have tarnished the then-politician's reputation, and diminished his influence. the secretary's interests were tied in with the president's, so maybe he didn't want to lose any of that.

still, without knowing much of the context, it does seem odd that the secretary would go to such lengths to protect First Son.

the makjang version would be that First Son is actually the secretary's son, which would explain why he went to such extreme lengths.

2. He probably knew the Chief of Staff for a LONG time, maybe even his entire lifetime as a family friend or his dad's friend from work. And the President seems like a just man who wouldn't have helped his son cover up the truth; so, the son called the next person he could trust AND has the capability to help him.

As for #2, my theory is that the President was probably a political favorite, Chief of Staff Lee was probably more of a campaign manager and didn't want President's political career to end before it began and of course he couldn't let all that power slip out of his hands!

Yeah you're right, using wrong words to a crazy person can get you killed, it looks like SJ had a habit of blurting out offending words, first she offended DC by saying cruel things about his brother and then she offended the president's son by calling him a 'cripple', in the second case i don't blame her for calling him that because the guy was out of his minds, throwing her to the ground and covering her mouth, she must have been scared because of his actions and called him out for it, she was just unlucky that she blurted out the words that offended the psycho who couldn't control his emotions, anyway some commenter's in other drama websites were suspecting SJ was cheating on DC, it's now clear that it wasn't the case, no matter how her character was she genuinely loved DC and he loved her back.

Dong Chan, please don't kill. It seems like such a reversal. Back when Soo Hyun dropped Cha Bong Sup from the building, DC saved him because he didn't want SH to be a killer and live with that guilt. That's probably the intention SH has now. Both of them sure have changed...in ways better and in others, worse.

These past few episodes lost their thrill and scare factor for me some, both good and bad. Good because I don't think I could've took more scare-induced paranoia on my part, and bad because I still enjoyed that adrenaline rush when facing scary parts.

A lot of mysteries have been wrapping up but one is left...what happened to that hair pin?

i was so sure there wasn't going to be an episode today, but i saw the articles regarding the scheduling last night, and so was holding out a glimmer of hope. i felt guilty for even wanting an episode, and for feeling glad when i saw that it did air. but news of the sewol incident is all i've been seeing, watching, hearing, and thinking about for nearly a week, and i'd been feeling like wanting to cry every time i watched any of the coverage. by now i was ready for a tiny bit of an escape from the reality, with all due respect to the victims and their families, and all those involved...

so, regarding this episode...

1. i feel like it's significant to point out that soo-jung stabbed First Son with the hairpin she pulled from her hair while he was strangling her, and not a random knife. i do wonder what happened to that hairpin, because surely if it had been left at the scene, it would have been picked up and sent for testing.

2. could it be that someone else (lee myung-han), NOT First Son, stabbed soo-jung? lee myung-han had the flashback early on in the episode, and it looked like it came from his own memories. could soo-jung still have been alive at that point?

3. the bit about dong-chan's jacket was really confusing me, so i went back and rewatched a few scenes. dong-chan was wearing an outer jacket when he met soo-jung for their date night, and a knit cardigan underneath. he wore a button-up and t-shirt beneath that. he left the outer jacket behind at the place where the murder took place after his fight with SJ. when he left his drinking buddies, he left behind the knit cardigan—his buddy called out to him that he had left it on the chair. if it was the outer jacket that First Son put on and was photographed in, what was the point of that scene when dong-chan was leaving his drinking buddies? just another red herring? i was so sure that someone had tried to frame dong-chan...

3. what's with the brain scan!? does this have anything to do with dong-chan's blackouts???????

i feel like there's still so much to wrap up tomorrow, and a lot of loose threads that still need to be addressed:

1a. soo-jung's mom (whether she's living, or dead) and the destiny cafe

2b. the red hairpin that dong-chan found in his jeans, and his memory of what happened that night

3b. the stationery shop owner—last time we saw him, he was clenching his fists and swore to pay dong-chan back. will we get another glimpse of him?

4b. the original timeline of events—i REALLY hope they show us this, because right now some things just aren't making sense.

I think because I was 99% sure that this was going to be the end result episodes ago, my enjoyment came from actually looking at the red herrings and picking apart why or why not they might be true and adjusting me theories. So the momentum slowed down when someone wasn't in extreme mortal peril.
I knew sketchy government official -Prime Minister- was behind it (because from what I gathered it's him behind it all and the President does not seem to know what's going on). And I figured his son was the final killer when they mentioned that 10 years ago he came back from the states.
It's like knowing what the puzzle is most likely going to look like but getting thrown a lot of pieces and figuring out what will fit and what won't :) I enjoyed it.

Let's hope that Ki Dong-Chan and Kim Soo-Hyun recorded Kim Joon-Seo as he confessed to killing Soo-Jung.

Probably in the minority, but I just prefer Kim Soo-Hyun and Ki Dong-Chan together as great partners/teammates/collaborators instead of as the OTP.

I have enjoyed watching and being emotionally invested in Ki Dong-Chan (Captain Awesome) as a character. However, I have not totally fallen under his spell to the point that I refuse to see or admit that he is a flawed character just like Hyun Woo-Jin and Han Ji-Hoon.

Hyun Woo-Jin - Complicit in letting the truth be buried that it was the bullet from the gun he fired during the hostage situation that was responsible for the brain damage Ki Young Gyu suffered. Succumbing to blackmail in order to protect and advance in his career. Destroying evidence at the scene of a crime and reaching a breaking point with how far he was willing to descend into corruption. Finally choosing to confess the truth to his father and let Ki Dong-Chan see the documentation for himself.

Han Ji-Hoon - Obstinately resistant to giving credence to Kim Soo-Hyun's assertions that Han Saet-Byeol will die. Crusading and principled Human Rights Attorney sometimes to the detriment of what's in the best interest of his family as a whole or individually for daughter and wife respectively. Determined to handle threats secretively his way and on his own terms as he pursues fairness in the justice system. Tight-lipped about his attempts to redress the wrongful conviction of Ki Dong-Ho. Adultery with Joo Min-Ah which resulted in a pregnancy.

Ki Dong-Chan - Wallowing in guilt and self-pity all these years instead of trying to atone for and make amends toward Ki Young Gyu. Even if for all those years prior to learning the truth, he felt justified in cutting off ties with his mother (Lee Soon-Nyeo) and brother (Ki Dong-Ho). Instead of "asking for facts beyond his assumptions," he simply caved and accepted what he thought he saw (his brother dumping the body of Soo Jung in the water). We know that he is capable of doggedly pursuing facts, questioning clues, and interogating witnesses. Example #1: His actions in the 2nd timeline as he constantly tries to prevent and stop the kidnapping/murder of Han Saet-Byeol. Example #2: Introduction to his character in the 1st timeline with how he handled himself and his private detective business.

I can't say it wasn't a little satisfying seeing Ji-hoon on his knees begging Dong-chan to help him save his daughter.

I think both Saet-byul and Dong-ho will survive to the end, but Dong-chan (and his mysterious brain scans) will throw us through one of the final loops. But hopefully he'll just end up in a hospital bed being nursed back to health by his mom, nephew, newly released hyung, a freshly divorced Soo-hyun and Saet-byul.

I demand a happy ending!

I agree with javabeans that the real truth is so anticlimatic. I actually prefer if the drama would just pick one of the red herrings (and they have many!!!) to be actual backstory. Sigh, coz right now it just implies that our Ahjumma-Dong Chan duo like to jump into conclusion and that doesn't really equate to smart characters. Plus, Lee Myung Han is the most 2D villain ever. The president would have been a better choice coz the theme of the drama seems to be that of a parent instinct of wanting to protect their loved ones to the point of blurring the the lines of morality. And now, you're a guy with just a political ambition. Snore.

Aside from the ranting, I actually don't think Dong Ho is the 'one' in the prophecy mentioned by Cafe Lady because he died in the first timeline as well. And from the events that unfolding in the second timeline, it just shows that Fatedoesn't like to be cheated. Events, even the small ones, that happen in the first timeline will occur in the second one, albeit with different executions so I'm kinda scared of what will happen to all our protagonists.

Agreed. I was thinking of the same thing. In the previous timeline Saet Byul supposedly died and we ended off with Dong Ho getting hanged, however, I don't recall if we saw him die or not (I guess we can assume that he did die).

It being the writer, the story is convoluted enough that I wouldn't be surprised if the writer threw in one more twist into the hotchpotch, that of which being who the prophecy was really referring to.

I was right about the President's son being the one involved but wrong about Lee Myung Han.He is not just guilty of messing up the case, he is the guilty party.

I agree with @saranga, I think the President's son did not actually kill Soo Jung. Yes, he strangled her and maybe she just lost consciousness. Lee Myung Han probably is the one who killed her. Otherwise why would he go to this extent to cover up the crime that was supposedly done by someone else? 10 years ago, after receiving Kim Joon Seo's call, he probably just intended to cover up the crime. However, Soo Jung must have regain her consciousness and saw his face. Then he picked up a knife or was it broken glass shards and killed her. Thus began the intricate cover up and another murder 5 years later.

The president obviously knows nothing about it. He didn't even know why CEO Chu fell out with him and left

Could someone please explain to me what role grandpa plays in this conflict?! I think I missed something. Who is his son? What of his secrets could be exposed?! I'm so confused about him.
I totally agree with the comments that this episode didn't have quite enough momentum for this point of the story. It felt a lot like a filler episode. Like the show had been given an extra episode extension and they had to push it along somehow.
Hand tatoo guy has kind of grown on me in a hot-bad-guy-with-a-soul kind of way. I liked that they told us his back story. In the end he was a dad too and it's sad that his despair led him down this dark path. Maybe he'll have a chance for redemption by protecting Saet Byul in the end. I feel like if she hadn't been left behind with the other guys she would have been ok.
Not gonna lie, I liked seeing Ji Hoon get his ass handed to him by Dong Chan. Speaking of Dong Chan, what a man!!!???? uh, what was I saying again.....
Anyway, I loved the moment when Dong Chan got to face his own selfishness. I love when Saet Byul gave up herself for him that it finally hit him how far others would go to save him and the direction that took him.
I've loved this show and I hope they have a great conclusion but I'm also prepared to ignore logic just in case.

we don't really know precisely what grandpa knows about the bad guys, except he's been keeping quiet all these years for his son. i don't know how long he's known what he's known, and whether he found out before or after his son's death. i think he's been keeping quiet to protect his son's name, and likely as well as his daughter-in-law and grandson.

grandpa's son is the guy in the blue button-up, the one who remarked on how attractive soo-jung was and called out to her at the lake. he was the one who was shown removing his (likely expensive) watch and replacing it with the souvenir one on his right wrist. our duo initially thought he was hephaestus because he was likely a lefty (as he wore a watch on his right wrist), and dong-chan had deduced that tattoo guy must be a lefty from the way he had fought.

grandpa's son also seems to have had a tendency to be a bit insensitive and thoughtless with his words—not intentionally, but likely a result of being both young and privileged. he asked who that "병신" or, "retard" was in reference to dong-ho, which First Son took offense to because in korean, it can also translate to referring to both a physical or mental handicap. it's a very strong word.

i think today's episode should (hopefully) clear up all the loose threads regarding our various characters!! :)

I was so pissed at JiHoon and SooHyun in the beginning. Jeez, pass the fake goods, grab Saetbyul and run! Check if she's okay later. What are you idiots doing hanging around?

So, is the grandpa Te Oh's dad? His son was killed and his DIL and grandson live the US, so it seems like that's how the two of them fit together.

"I’m not convinced that one of the two innocent lives must die."

Perhaps not but, call me sadistic, I kind of want one of them to die. I find stories that stick to their guns and aren't afraid to kill characters much more interesting than stories with Hollywood style happily ever after endings.

This. Is. Weird.

Casting makes even this Drama a See-Through.

Who else was weirded out by the fact that the President's son wasn't just a newbie but a known actor??

It's so weird for me that my first guessing actually ended up being true. (Though that does happen sometimes) Is that a good thing or a bad thing?! Well....we never had the full picture but we knew the killer already with our first logical guess....

Considering how everything is well knitted and thought through I want it to be a good thing.

I remembered him as the temp maknae in Pasta...so I knew he wasn't a newbie. His "confession" in the hospital was a bit jarring, although he did portray someone off his rocker fairly decently...considering the little glimpses of him throughout this drama, he always seemed off and shady.

I don't know him but someone did bring this up a couple of episodes ago. So I agree that this kind of casting gives it away.

Although this drama is clever enough, it does have certain stereotypes like the perpetuator is someone with significant clout and power. By this virtue, the President's son was already a suspect since ep 1 although the first few episodes had really good red herrings and were so gripping. Not to mention his leaving the country coincidentally 10 years ago.

For Lee Myung Han, he just looked shady and slimy from the start. Actually that threw me off because I thought he looked too obviously evil. Alas, bad guys still look bad, ha.

At one point, I thought it could be interesting if Young Gyu is involved somewhat. Like he was feigning loss of intellect or something. It would be more chilling to see that innocent face turn evil.

Yeah, I said it nearly from the beginning...his being overseas for the past 10 years was too damn convenient, so I always kept him in my suspicious list with the CoS.

I think the only time the guy who was CoS wasn't shady was the drama where YSH and CJW were divorced lawyers...he was deadpan pretty much the whole way through, with no shady evilness involved.

I, too, thought YG would have been involved somewhat (although he was present when his grandma "kidnapped" SB to that cave hideout)...it would have made it definitely more interesting than what ended up happening -- to say the least.

Hmm, Jin-woo (from the mental hospital) witnessed 3 stabs, but Dong-chan said that Soo-jung had 9 stab wounds... what did Jin-woo see?

This show has been pretty good on clarifying details that seemed obscure when they were first introduced to us, but I hope that in the last episode they're able to juggle all their balls so to speak and address all the missing pieces in a satisfying way!

Can't believe we're in the final stretch already!!! :( But I have to agree, this episode was a bit anti-climactic. The excess of red herrings was a bit fatigue-inducing, now that the pieces are falling into place for the finale.

So the Prez's son was SJ's killer...which didn't come as a surprise to me, considering how much the Prez and his administration were bending way over backwards to cover this crime up. I knew someone close to him had to have been involved, so I'm glad I called that. The CoS calling the shots wasn't a surprise as well...haha, I laughed while agreeing with those that said he had a suspicious face -- which turned out to be true. As for the Hephaestus nickname, it was due to his handicap...which, in comparison to DH and his mental disability, kinda showed how one snapped (after being called names) and how the other confessed to crimes he did not commit, in order to save (what he thought) his "guilty" brother.

It was heartbreaking to see how DC was grappling with the fact that the jewelry would exonerate his brother and free SB...and that he still could not turn a blind eye to SB made it all the more heartwrenching. It was a bit of a daring move on JH's part to give the fake evidence, although at first I had thought DC had got it done, so that he could free his brother...I shouldn't have doubted you, DC! :/

And the "one must die" bit...argh. With all the actions that both SH and DC took to reverse "fate" in this second go-around, it would be a damn shame for the fortune-telling should continue to hold true this time around as well. As we've seen in the butterfly effects that SH and DC had this go-around, fate continued to assert itself (or herself?) by having bits and pieces of the previous time continue to happen this time. While I'm torn at whether either DH or SB "should" die, in order to have that ring true...I can't imagine either SH or DC having to go through the grief of losing their loved-one this time around again. It's not looking like it's gonna be a happy ending all around...which is gonna be a bit hard to watch :/

I haven't watched the final episode as of yet, because I wanted to get through this first and respond to this solely with this episode in mind.

(I actually was surprised that this had aired...I had assumed no dramas were airing due to the ferry tragedy).

Just watched the last episode and I've just had a WTF fit. I came here to read the recap, but it's not up yet. I wish it'd help me understand a few things OR at least find that other feel the same (as in, confused and not all that happy about the ending and the plot in general). I honestly feel let down by the show.

I keep refreshing dramabeans like the others.

I think it's not an episode as such, but a special episode with interviews with the actors, bts clips etc etc. But here's to hoping they might give us some deleted scenes and extra footage. Or perhaps the actors can enlighten us on exactly what happened.

Me too, like everyone else, I want to discuss the ending. Despite my opinions on the last 3 minutes, I thought the 3 actors (Lee Bo Young, Jo Seung Woo, Kim Yoo Bin) did a wonderful job and each deserve multiple awards for their performance.
