Nominees announced for Baeksang Arts Awards

In the past, I haven’t posted up full nominee rosters for the big awards ceremonies—sometimes I miss the nomination announcements and sometimes I just want to wait to see the winners list. But I figure it may be a point of interest for y’all, so here you go: the nominees for the 50th Baeksang Arts Awards, whose ceremony will be held on May 27.

To give you a general idea of what the Baeksangs are, it’s an award ceremony first established by a newspaper founder and is presented annually in the spring by IS Plus Corp, which is the publisher of a newspaper. It’s the only major award ceremony to honor both film and television, so in that regard it’s a bit like the Golden Globes. The film world has numerous other awards (various film festivals and the Blue Dragons, for instance) but television doesn’t have much outside of its own broadcaster-hosted awards (i.e., the end-of-year ceremonies from KBS, MBC, and SBS)—but as those events are self-congratulatory and designed to spread the love around strategically, I tend not to take them that seriously.

So I do look forward to the Baeksangs with curiosity, because I’m interested in seeing what stood out across the board (and namely, across multiple broadcasters, including cable stations like tvN and JTBC, which have some great programming deserving of recognition). I don’t take any award show that seriously because yes, they do tend to be highly subjective at best and blatantly political at worst, but they’re fun to look at.

That said, this year’s Baeksang list is utter crap. I won’t argue too much with the film side, but lordy who the hell compiled the TV list? Was it a person who watches television? Because Imma say maybe it was compiled by a person who doesn’t watch television. I won’t even take issue with glaring omissions because okay, there were a LOT of shows to consider and Baeksangs fall in a weird part of the year where last year’s shows are competing with current shows, and it’s understandable if people get forgotten in the shuffle. But Good Doctor as best drama or best directing, really? Shark for anything at all, but specifically good writing? And fine, I will take issue with an omission after all because somehow Baro got on the list twice for God’s Gift (but not Answer Me), yet Jo Seung-woo’s name is nowhere to be found. For shame.

So basically, now this list holds no water with me. I will look forward to the awards show for the red carpet, but that’s all. That carpet had better be rockin’.

Hahaha I really don't understand how they pick one or two people for the Popularity Awards... Well true, they usually call like 5 to 10 names for it. Who wants that popularity award really?

I haven't seen any of the movies that were nominated for Best Picture. As for the others, I've only watched Covertly Grandly (and loved it!)...
I bet My Love from the Stars is going to get almost all the awards for the drama categories where it's nominated haha...

Thanks for sharing javabeans!

I agree completely! Jo Seung Woo not being nominated for Best Actor was ridiculous! But I heard they edited the popularity award list (what award show does that) to include Jo Seung Woo's name when he was completely ignored previously...

You don't have to say other show bad for you to make your faves stand out. And the fact is Secret Love Affair is touted in Korea as the best drama this year. It's not from random fans talking. That's why it gets nominated even before it ends, just like God's Gift.

Agree! Judging from the nomination lists for Best Actor and Actress awards, they are garbage! JJM and HJW should be included in the lists, both are top notch Korean artistes! Empress Ki is the best Korean drama in 2014 with skilful and impressive actings by HJW and JJM!

Anyway, HJW had won several Baeksang Best Actress awards before, she’s not hard up!

Koreans prefer Gays than talented artistes…Bloop! Its shameful to Korea! Overseas viewers have good taste…Cheers!

i was skeptical because some of these dramas had not completed airing yet but I see why Secret Love Affair is there. I usually prefer lighter dramas because the fluffiness makes it easier to watch but once in a while something though-proking is necessary. I didn't think I'd be able to stand watching it but there is great chemistry between the leads and the soundtrack is simple yet emotionally engaging. I enjoyed it and will likely rewatch it again soon.

I really do believe it deserves the drama series award.

You want to know the most ridiculous part?? Ji Chang Wook was not on the list before, but suddenly at night they change the nominations to include him in popularity award. I'm really mad at them even though JCW deserved to be on the list or even the Best Actor list!! See here:

yes i'm really dissapointed that the cast of empress ki didn't nominated, i think it's about distortion history, they didn't dare include the drama or the cast in the main category. Actually i think JJM deserve daesang for his acting in empress ki. For best actor i think joo won deserve it, but i only didn't know the actor of Jung do joen haven't see his drama thought. Joowon got many award for his role including pd award so he already appreciate by many so i think his chance is hight

My thoughts exactly!
How can Jung Woo be nominated in the new actor category when he's been in movies and television shows since the early 2000's? They should really rename it for what it really stands for, finally reaching stardom and being "new" to the masses regardless of how many years of experience or projects you've been in.

Yeah. I mean, I understand that Kim SungKyun is film and theatre focused and only recently popped up on dramas, but New Actor Award? Whut? Didn't he already get a best actor award (in film) from this same Award show in 2012? Don't ger me wrong. I love the guy, but... but... How does this work...

You can be a rookie in one (drama/movie industry) and a veteran in the other (drama/movie industry). Kim Soo Hyun's still considered to be a rookie in the movie industry so he's nominated for the best new actor award, but he's considered to be a veteran in the drama industry so he's nominated for the best actor award.

In Kim Sung Kyun's case, he was a rookie in both, but since he's already won the best new actor award for a movie, he'll be in the best actor category next time (if there is ever a next time).

when actors hit big with a role and became popular, they often appear in the ''new come actor'' even though they did works in the past. This always happens, plus I think they didn't want to put Jung Woo and KS against KSH and LJS etc.

The irony is, Jung Woo's acting is far better than any nominees (except Jo jae Hyun) in the best actor category. It's as ridiculous as Joo Jin Mo getting the rookie award in MBC award last year.

Also I have same feeling with @SS so I'm sad when read comment about Good Doctor. I have feeling that joowon will bring best actor award this time because he's done fantastic job in good doctor

Th synopsis was purposely vague on JSW's character, DC, and how his character tied into the overall mystery of the show since GG14D is all about the reveals.

There's no way a show that managed to cast JSW (a highly sought after film and musical actor) would even think about making him a "supporting" actor. He was always intended as the male lead to LBY's female lead counterpart.

0

Did you really believe that a top actor who has won numerous awards will play second lead to Lee Bo Young, as soon as he was casted I knew he would not play second fiddle to anyone and he will be the lead, LBY was the female lead and JSW was the male lead, anyway JSW has won this award before for Best Actor Category in 2004, he was nominated again in 2007 for Best Actor but lost that time, he has also won Best Actor in Grand Bell Awards, GBA is the Korean equivalent to Academy Awards.

0

lol c'mon, it's Jo SeungWoo.. there's no way he's cast as a supporting role.. his name as supporting role doesnt seems to match... he's indeed the lead character in GG14...

And Go Ara for TE actress? At the expense of Ha Ji Won, Hwang Jung Eum and Go Hyun Jung. Go Ara did improve and she was quite good in AM94 but it is nowhere near the level of the performances of the actresses I just mentioned.
One thing I notice about Korean awards for television they don't have supporting actor and actress category.

I know what you mean. I was looking for NINE for best actor or at least best writing category... same withCRUEL CITY and also END OF THE WORLD needs to be on that list!!!

I know, I may also be biased but,
having SHARK in there for writing when NINE, CRUEL CITY, QUEEN OF CLASSROOM and END OF THE WORLD or MISS KOREA is not there, just spells BOGUS! I guess it is all about rating? which is just.. whatever!!!

I also loved GO ARA after Answer Me 1994 but to not nominate Ha Ji Won, Gong Hyo Jin and Kim HyeSun over her?
and for actor in a supporting role, they put in Baro as opposed to Park Sae Joo in Warm Words.
and I love the dramas and the actor in the actor category but they should have made room for at least Ji chang wook in the best actor category cause he was awesome in Empress ki...!

The film category seems okay, I guess it is pretty hard to really put in all movies but I like that the best picture went to all the movies listed, as well as the best actor category...
I am hoping Ha Jung Woo wins best actor cause this would be his 2nd consecutive wins in BAEKSANG (he won in 2010 then 2011, and 2013). But I think Song Kang Ho will get this one!
All of the list in the FILM is pretty solid, well okay maybe except Venus talk, but omonah look at the new actor list, the fans are gonna go gaga who ever is gonna bag that one: Im siwan vs Kim Wonbin vs Lee Joon vs Kim Soo Hyun vs Yeo Jingu.

I don't really have an issue with the nominees for the film part of Baeksang. Except for the new actor/actress category since those actors are not actually new in Chungmuro.
It is the nominees for the TV categories that I have an issue.Good Doctor was absurd. It winning in Korean PD award is ridiculous. The production team could have given us a School 2013 and Bleak Night type of drama about Savant Syndrome and Autism. Instead, the drama gave the viewers story about hospital politics. The drama was never about Savant Syndrome and Autism. The mental disorder was used to lure viewers. It was underserving of the ratings that it received. The awards for best drama and best writing are ridiculous.
Lastly, I don't really expect much from the TV category part of Baeksang. Award-buying, under the table discussion (time-slot buying, etc.( and favoritism are rampant in dramaland
Not that Chungmuro is any better compared to dramaland. The kdrama world is a bit mess and you can actually see it on the productions that they release.

TRUE.... Jung Kyung Ho definitely deserves an award for Doctor's son in Cruel City! if not an award, he needs to be nominated!
Additionally I wish they nominated Lee Je Moon, he was really awesome in End of the World, and well Ji Chang Wook from Empress Ki...
JooWon in Good doctor is good as a savant but I think the best savant I saw in Kdrama was the younger brother of Han Hyo Joo in Shining Inheritance. (He is Baro's Younger bro in Answer Me 1994!)

The actress category is just urghhh...

I actually liked Good Doctor but I agree that it really is not a savant story that they advertised, it is hospital politics like Golden Time... But between the two, in my opinion Golden Time better, Lee Sung Min was just awesome in that drama!

And the Film, as I've written above, I just wish against all odds that Ha Jung Woo wins... but then of Song Kyung Ho or Sohn Hyun Joo are also equally awesome!

It is completely frustrating that Cruel City did not win any awards or even be nominated for that matter, when it's got brilliant writing and directing going on. Not to mention, Jung Kyung Ho's stellar performance as Doctor's son.

Nine was intelligently written too. Though at times it gives you a head-splitting headache when you're trying to figure things out.

I guess at the end of the day it all comes down to popularity. Unfortunately.

man that Top Excellence Award for the male category in movies are so tough, look at the names, Ha Jung Woo, Song Kang Ho, Sol Kyung Gu, Sohn Hyun Joon and Jung Woo Sung, i think the least likely to win among them are JSW for 'Cold Eyes' and SHJ for 'Hide and Seek', i loved both movies to be honest, the remaining three actors are all legends of Kmovie industry, who are you gonna award, Ha Jung Woo for 'The Terror Live', Song Kang Ho for 'Snowpiercer', 'The Face Reader' and 'The Attorney' or Sol Kyung Gu for 'The Hope' which was an excellent movie, my bet is on Song Kang Ho to win it because in my eyes he is the best but I wouldn't mind if the others manage to snatch it from him.

Basically, Baeksang didn't quite forget about the other dramas since most are nominated in the popularity awards.

Yet for the main awards: No Ha Ji-won or Go Hyun-jung in the female category. And they actually nominate Lee Jong-suk (LOL) but don't bother putting in Lee Jin-wook or Lee Jun-ki's name. And 'love is the moment' for OST without 'touch love'. This is probably the worst list of Baeksang nominees since I started watching K-dramas...

man these crazes around dramas actually drive me bloody crazy. i mean if there was more substance to it than a hot alien meeting a hot older chick and it resulting to push and pull thre whole way through, then yeah, maybe i would feel otherwise. i mean i watched some of the eps of ywcfs but kind of lost interest eventually. i'll admit that it was funny and charming but so are many other shows. it deffo doesn't deserve all this hype and nor all the nominations.

i mean it's the most amazing feeling when something gets the attention it deserves. like i remember watching bleak night for the first time and being absolutely blown away. but i knew that it was a risk. because it's the kind of thing not many want to sit through. especially when it's very gloomy with not many laughs to lighten the mood. it didn't have the 'hottest actors of the moment ' in there to make it instantly appealing to the youngsters but the fact that so many people connected with it made it so much rewarding for me when i found out that people had connected with it like i had and it had been recognised.

i was kind of hoping the girls would have been more specific on what shows or movies they didn't think deserved to be on the list because i doubt only two or three made them not take the whole awards seriously. but since i haven't seen a lot of the movies or some of the dramas, it's hard for me to know :/ i needed more yeo jin goo and for hawyi to have more nominations on that list though. he totally got robbed there. such an amazing movie. happy to see reply 1994 on there though

That is an issue I had with most award-giving bodies. People saying that Korean PD Award is more credible than Baeksang must be joking. Look at the nominees and winners of KPD Award (past and present) it was all about popular and high-rating dramas and actors and actresses who starred in such popular dramas. It is a reality that it when it comes to awards it is based on popularity, ratings and hype. It is prevalent in the film and tv industry. No award giving body is better than the other.

Imo, maybe because Yoo Ah In's acting is a little bit stronger than her, her subtleness is a little bit overshadowed by him. And/or because she already got nominee for best actress in the film category, these awards tend to want to spread the love around.

I was so glad Secret Love Affair got several mentioned, it deserves this, Ahn Pan Seok & Jung Song Joo as well.

Required fields are marked *

I can understand why Kim Hee Ae didn't get nominated. She fared much better in Wife's Credentials than in Secret Love Affair. I guess that they are also looking for improvement and breakthrough. I actually think that the list for TV best actress is good, compared to the ludicrous list for best actor.

That being said, Yoo Ah In shouldn't be nominated, even though I am his fan. He does not even have so much screen time in SLA, and his character is only a catalyst, not one with layers and complexities as Kim Hee-ae's HW. He managed to breathe life into the character. But does he showcase half of what he is capable of? Not at all.

In the similar logic, Kim Hee Ae shouldn't be nominated for Elegant Lies either. She is more like a supporting role to Go Ah-sung, whose character drives the main plot and emotion of the story.

This Baeksang nomination is truly a joke.

I beg to differ, but Yoo Ah In gets same screen time as much as KHA. Yes, he's the catalyst but KHA's character is also his propel and his muse to reach where his character is now. They complete each other.

And then whoever was left over was put into the popularity category? "Oh, crap we have 25 names left, let's just put them in popularity, we give out like 10 anyway." Except for Jo Seung Woo...THE FUQ.

Anyway. I actually loved Good Doctor...but I agree, best drama? It was cute but bland, there wasn't anything dramatic and it wasn't exactly a rom-com. Maybe they chose it because of Joo Won and Moon Chae Won? I luff both of them so I can't seriously complain, but...man all of these categories are all about popularity lol.

Redicoulous scripts: check
Overrated dramas: check
Pretty faces: check ...
Of course, there are nominees, who deserve their nomination. But most of it sound like political or strategic choices based merely on popularity and not on the skills show casted (in comparison to others and sometimes even to the work of the same nominee in other dramas)

I might get hate, but, I hope KSH doesn't get an award because of his DM's role and because his drama got so popular.

It was all thanks to Jun Ji Hyun acting tbh, it wasn't one of best KSH's roles or acting, the guy is good crying in one scene = gives his all the awards! No.

Really now? This actors awards list sucks... Jo seung woo deserved it tbh. He was really good in God's gift.

I feel like everything KSH does right now will give him awards because of his A level status. And he won't improve like Lee Minho, Park Shin Hye after Bofs days and now heirs, they don't need to improve anymore, they are all A list actors and people will buy anything they give.

I dont agree.. he was really good in yfas. the 3 things I think he was especially good was..
1. he perfectly changed tone and accent from a granpa-like joseon old man to a modern boy. he was just amzing.
2. his pronunciation was extremely clear and accurate that it was really amusing to just listen to his lines.
3. he exactly knew where to stop and continue and where to stress and weaken between words and it was so impressive that he got rave reviews by korean viewers and critics especially for that..

his voice, tone, enunciation, pronunciation, delivery was super good in yfas. these things seem subtle but very important.. I find that i-fans somewhat devale his acting a lot and i think it is because they cant differenciate those things unlike native koreans..

KSH totally nailed DMJ's character. He had 400 years of hurt to be defensive about. I find it interesting that for a character who is suppose to be 400 years old and an alien is suppose to act this animated normal person. Plus he came from the Joseon era! I don't think people realize in the Korean culture it was unseemly to be expressive! I remember this because my own grandmother criticized my sister for smiling so brightly at a party!

His interpretation of DMJ as being cold, defensive, and seemingly expressionless aside from his eyes and voice was right on. DMJ is suppose to be a cranky old grandpa from the Joseon era and KSH portrayed that perfectly!

Lee Min Ho and Park Shin Hye are not A-list actors in Korea. Lee Min Ho is known in Korea but he does not have a big fan base there. Weird but true. He is much more popular with international fans.

Personally, I loved Kim Soo Hyun in YWCFTS. His acting style was minimalist; deliberate body movements, minute facial movements, excellent vocal delivery and, most important of all, are his eyes. To me, his eyes conveyed emotions all the time. They have been an essential part of his acting that it has been referred to as 'eye acting' in some Korean interviews/reports.

But then again, it's just my opinion that KSH made DMJ a highly believable character.

I thought I'd see both JSW and HJW in Best Actor/Actress categories, but no! The freakin' injustice!!! :/

Btw, I get why they included KHS (GoW) and JJH (JDY)..."token" spots taken by usual film actor/actress (since they rarely do dramas, although JJH did Scandal and JDY), which is just a damn shame.

And, although I thought JW did a decent job in GD...it's kinda laughable that they'd give Best Drama and Actor nods for a show from last year. Plus, it was more fluff than actual substance...!

...and I'm a JW fan. I'm sorry, but JSW and HJW got robbed before they even had the chance :/

Required fields are marked *

Shouldn't it be that the nominees are from the period between the last award ceremony and this year's ceremony? It couldn't be only shows from 2014? Only from four months?
IMHO it's quite unfair to nominate shows in their run (they can turn either way). If there are only one or two eps left (EK), ok. But halfway through? I didn't watched GD, so I can't say anything about its quality. But it's not a problem of its airing time. Nevertheless, it's sad that good dramas have been ignored (eg Empress Ki, Heartless City, Two Week, Miss Korea,...)

0
9
reply

Required fields are marked *

Actually, that's what I was thinking...because the award shows here in the U.S. do that.

That being said, I went back and looked up GD's air date. For some reason, I thought it had aired last spring...which was why I thought it would have been qualified for last year's Baeksangs. Didn't remember it was on in August! My bad.

But I still don't think JW's portrayal > JSW's...or even SJS's or JKH's, for that matter either! :/

Although if they didn't consider shows still airing...then why would SLA get nods? Or HJW getting a popularity nod? That's inconsistent on whoever selected these nominees...

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

That's exactly my point: the general inconsistency in the selected nominees. And I was referring to SLA, not because it's not worth nominating it, but its halfway through! Whereas it would be easier to justify a nomination with one or two eps left like EK, but mostly ignored that drama (exception BJH)

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

SLA is not halfway through. It's only 4 episodes left from 16 eps. And the last 12 episodes that have aired get positive responds from the critics and viewers because they are really good. They deserve it.

0

@ Mariana
By the day of the announcement of the nominees SLA has aired 10 out of 16 episodes. 11th was on the way. So, you right that was a little more than halfway through (but only by two eps, plus there are rumors of a possible extension to 20 eps). Whereas EK had aired 49 out of 51 eps. So, in proportion it is more legitimate to nominate EK (for acting, not the drama itself!).

But as I stated, I'm generally not a fan to nominate anything, which isn't finished yet. How often can dramas and actors fail in the later part of the production? It does quite frequently. I'm asking myself how many eps could the judges have seen before nominating SLA for best drama of the whole year and forget so many awesome and finished dramas? I don't said it's not worth nominating it. BTW, and to be fair, how could Yoo Ah In be nominated, but Kim Hee Ae not?

Sorry, Mariana, I don't want to sound harsh or rude. And I don't meant to be it. I'm just hopelessly disappointed, how unfair the wohle thing is. I know popularity, ratings and politics aways play a role in the nomination process, but this is really out of any proportion

0

... of course, in the case of EK, I mean the stellar performances of the cast. Not the drama itself. It's started promising, got crazy, bounced back and got crazy again... Nevertheless, I wouldn't wanted to miss it. The cast did an awesome job with the given script

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I definitely agree with you on EK. In no way do I think that it's a great drama, writing-wise and plot-wise...the performance by the cast, with the given script, was what's worthy of a nod for HJW imo.

I myself began watching it, then skipped it once SN stopped being kickass and went into the palace. Picked it back up recently to see how things turned out...all sorts of crazy no doubt. It reminded me of ECC...so much promise but ended up being a makjang crazyfest, lol. Maybe it's too hard of a concept to have a strong female in a well-written sageuk...?

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

LOL I hope not! Maybe in the near future we'll get strong female characters in well-written sageuk. I wouldn't even thing that this is a stretch, since history tends to draw the curtain over strong females (or portrayes them as evil). So, why not let them shine and 'write' them into todays mind in a sageuk? ;) *crossing fingers* Even modern day dramas have changed to show more stronger female characters.

0

You know, I forgot to mention this in my reply to you, eJc...I wonder why all 4 dramas that you mentioned are not well-represented in this Baeksang list. Even more so regarding HC, TW and MK...because I thought those three were well-written and I enjoyed watching them. I can see the support that these shows had on here as well...and yet, those 3 are not given much in the way of nominations or accolades.

The continuous snubbing of those 3 is disconcerting for their fans...because shows that had the monster ratings (YFAS and IHYV in particular) are more well-represented in the list. Granted, I know that ratings definitely play a role in making the awards nominees listing (like the Oscars and Emmys in the U.S.)...but still. I don't comprehend the snubbing of even giving them a nod.

I'm not overly positive that these shows (well, at least on the Big 3) will garner some, if any, accolades at the end-of-the-year awards either. I remember EK got some in last year's MBC awards (HJW in particular, even though the drama had just started and she got the Daesang!). I don't think jTBC has an awards ceremony...so it's unfortunate for HC :/

I totally agree with you, Tara. And I asked myself the same questions. That's why I'm so disappointed about the nominations. Even more so - and especially - in regard of Heartless City ; (

No question, I did enjoy YFAS... like a mousse au chocolate. It's a sweet and fluffy treat, but it's fast consumed and it still keeps my hungry. Perhaps the problem is on me as I prefer a deeper impact once in a while?

And as you said, the mentioned dramas are well-written and watchable. Plus great performances. EK is the exception on the list, crazy script & plot. Despite the crazy most of the cast is acting their hearts out. And I admire HJW acting chops. She did an outstanding job in EK.

BTW, even if cable stations don't have their own award ceremonies (as fare as I know), I hope the continue to produce outstanding and boundaries pushing dramas. This will keep the big 3 to review their tactics, to start taking risk and to explore more

Oops, I replied to my own comment...meant to reply to you, Sandy.

Uh…who are you referring to as JSW? The JSW I’m referring to is God’s Gift Jo Seung-woo. I think you think I’m referring to Ji Chang-wook of Empress Ki (considering the JSW-HJW shippers part of your comment — HJW being Ha Ji-won)…although his initials would then be JCW, not JSW.

And no, I don’t think he deserves to be nominated for Best Actor for that.

0

Oh, sorry for that, I has nothing against Jo Seung-woo, he’s a really great actor. But I wouldn’t “change” him for Joo Won who I think had a commendable performance. Lee Jong-seok is the more questionable person of the list for me.

0

Yeah, I agree...he's the "questionable" nominee for me as well. I thought he did a decent job in IHYV, better in S2013...but those performances in no way were Best Actor nomination worthy (sorry!).

But...if I had to choose from those nominated on the list, I would lean more towards Joo Won. Can't say it was the best of the year, though...because I'm still miffed that Jo Seung-woo and So Ji-sub didn't get nods, they were my faves). Jung Kyung-ho definitely also warranted a nod too.

I'm one of those that don't think Kim Soo-hyun warrants winning it...it was all Jeon Ji-hyun, imo.

0

I fully agree with you about Kim Soo-hyun/ Jeon Ji-hyun part.

0

@Sandy Weak performance? Are you kidding me? Stop being bitter just because you're dissatisfied with the treatment of JJM's character in EK. Hate it all you want, JCW is talented and has a bright future ahead of him.
If there is something EK has taught me is that I will never watch another JJM's project like ever. Most of his fans are arrogant and full of hatred. They can't accept for their star to share the spotlight with another actor... God forbids his co-stars to even dare outshine him, they would suffer their wrath. They're just jealous because JCW gained a lot of fans through this drama and he is also being praised for his masterful performance. Haters gonna hate.

0

Edit : And I've been told that JJM fans were mature and low-key fans...what a joke!

0

This is the first time I've heard something like this about JJM...now, I know he's a well-known actor and he does films/dramas, but really what you said about his fans is news to me. That is, if it's really true.

Honestly, I like both JJM and JCW. If anything, both characters WY and TH were written to be "weak"...WY for not being able to defend Koryo from Yuan and TH for being just weak in general (and now he's goin' crazy). That being said...I think both did well with what they got, script-wise. Had they been written much better...well, then we could argue whether actor portrayed their role better.

0

@Tara Sorry if it feels like I am on anger spree but I've been witnessing and putting up with their bs for much too long. Bashing a character is okay in my book, bashing the actor who is just doing his job is downright rude and disrespectful. You don't believe me? Go to soompi (shippers thread). I liked JJM as an actor (watched Frozen Flower and 200 pounds beauty) and I had nothing against him until experiencing the despicable attitude of some of his fans...

0

All in all, I'm happy that this drama has come to an end. The drama was far from being perfect and there's no doubt that is its cast that saved it in the end. Kudos to all the actors that made this journey bearable.

On-topic --- Jo Seung Woo should have been nominated for best actor, he was amazing in God's gift.

0

Nah, I didn't think you were on an anger spree...but I can see how you can get so angered.

That is why I stopped reading forums on soompi. Oh lordy, I was absolutely astounded and disgusted with the way people were talking shit about a freakin' character and the actor portraying that character...which got especially worse around AM1994 and Chilbongie.

Even on here, there are a few who spout and rant on in a similar fashion...instead of reading, I ignore -- since if you ignore and don't respond to their obnoxious writings, they won't be spurred to continue. At least...that's what I hope.

And, with the internet culture in Korea and beyond...there's no surprise that there are fierce fans and antis (now, those saesang fans make me shudder). It's to a point where you can argue for/against an actor, actress and their roles...but to get all bug-eyed and ranting crazy about them --- well, that's extreme and I won't let them get under my skin :)

@ sandy
The script ruined the show not the actors.
"Weak performance"? No way! JJM AND JCW did their best to play unbalanced and not-thought-through characters! !!!
Their motivation was often one dimensional and did mostly serve the purpose of crazy plot, not character development or growth.

To balance your (to some point) justified complaints about "pouty-lips"-TH (and only about TH not the actor JCW), I have to emphasize, that WJ was a boring, not growing character, who was doomed from the beginning. It was early in the game, when his destiny with SN was seperated in a way, that couldn't really be fixed later on. And it had nothing to do with "fan service". Bad writing plus severe plot mistakes! I stayed through it just because of the cast.

Should they both be nominated for best performance of the year? Probably not! Especially compared to someone like Jung Kyung Ho in HC. But compared to the nominees, like Lee Jong Seok? For sure! If it's justifiable to nominated him then at least the same extend goes for JCW & JJM. They both did much better than LJS.

@Tara
Spot on! You described it well... extrem fans & their internet behavior! soompi is no treat in fan- and shipping wars. AM94 & EK were unpleasant experiences. I tend to stay away, too.

What made you even think that JW's performance is amazing? His acting is nowhere near what a person with autism and savant syndrome is in real life. And sorry to used the word but his performance is more of a 'retarded' person.
His performance was nowhere near the autism performance done by Park Ki Woong before and the actor who played HHJ sibling in BL.

What a funny opinion. If you liked some actors’ performances, it doesn’t mean that other actor should do the same. The people with autism are all different. By the way, Joo Won was highly praised for his performance by the director of Centre of Autism in Korea and you know, I trust his opinion. In addition, drama got several awards and many thanks from special centers in Korea. Do many dramas have such impact on society? And yes, Joo Won’s performance was amazing.

Impact to society?! LOL.. I'll only believe that when I've seen some changes. I'll believe it if South Korean government passed regulations and laws for people with mental disorder. Right now that impact you are talking about. That changes that GD wants to impart to Korean society died down when the drama ended. How many works about mental disorder have been shown in Chungmuro and even to kdrama not even a single one made an impact. Good Doctor was never about autism and savant syndrome. They only used it as a selling point to viewers. A marketing strategy.
And lastly, the first and last production to give light to autism and savant syndrome was Rainman. All other productions that followed are obnoxious.

0

Yeah, there is an impact on society but of course you’ll not see this with such an aggressive attitude. Good Doctor was about the understanding other people and accepting someone who is different from you and maybe you’ll understand it some day when you’ll not be so angry.
LOL to “obnoxious” part.

0

Funny how you prematurely described me as being angry just because my sentiment is different from yours. I was trying to make a statement that I know will either be acknowledge or repudiate by individuals.

0

Uh...who are you referring to as JSW? The JSW I'm referring to is God's Gift Jo Seung-woo. I think you think I'm referring to Ji Chang-wook of Empress Ki (considering the JSW-HJW shippers part of your comment -- HJW being Ha Ji-won)...although his initials would then be JCW, not JSW.

And no, I don't think he deserves to be nominated for Best Actor for that.

I love good doctor, so I'm happy that good doctor is nominated in baeksang award as best drama. Good doctor also was nominated as best drama in several drama awards last year,, so I'm not surprised if they got nominated again and they just won best drama and best actor in 26th Korea PD award, so I'll not be sad if they didn't' win in baeksang award :D

LoL this song ia at the same level with Almost Paradisseeeeeeeeee
It deserves an award :D
I think this award is better than the-end-of-the-year awards from big three station that'a laughable at best. And there's Secret Love Affair, enough to satisfy me.

Urgh no Jo Seung Woo is really not okay and it kind of hurts not to see him on the list :( ... I've just discovered him through God's Gift (Thank you drama =) ) but I've seen nearly all his movies by now and damn if he isn't one hell of an actor! And he made me care about DC so much and he just ... Yeah fangirl talking here so I am pretty pissed -.- Just ignore it :D

The rest of the list... I just skimmed it but there were some more eyerolls included^^

And I swear if "This is the Moment" wins ... Gah this was by far the worst and most annoying song of last year (though still nothing trumps "Almost Paradise^^)....

I love Good Doctor. I think it deserves all the nominations, as well as Joo Won. It has also won in the recent Korean PD Awards as Best Picture and Joo Won won the Best Performance. I even think that one is more credible than this year's Baeksang.

I am here to bitch on behalf of Jung Kyung-ho and heartless city.

The people who nominate people in Korea need to have their eyes examine. they make Emmy nominations seem downright holy.

Lee Jung Seok being nominated for best actor over Jung Kyung Ho is a crime. Or should be.

I saw both I hear your voice and Hearless city and they are not even on the same level and anyone can see that.

For me that is the biggest issue.

and that new actor category is ridiculous. Some of these actors have been acting forever. What is considered "New" in Korea? Is it like the Korean age issue. Some secret mathematical formula that only korean people can figure out?

for me Yoo Ah In being nominated instead of Jung Kyung Ho is the biggest issue, no offence to YAI fans but his drama hasn't even reached mid way point, it's just started. I don't see why some people here are targeting LJS because in my eyes he is a very talented actor who is recognized by directors and fans alike.

Because Yoo Ah In gets more positive reviews from the local media for his acting in SLA. He's everywhere on the drama reviews nowadays.

I don't think it's targeting LJS in as much as they are just voicing their opinion. I also like LJS and Jung Kyung Ho. JKH is such an underrated actor, it's a pity. I agree that he should have been nominated. I thought he was just cute in TBDaW but he was really great in Smile, You. Even his cameo in Road No. 1 was a pleasant surprise. And of course he rocked in Heartless City.

Yang Jin Sung should have been nominated for Best Actress or at least New Actress Award. And Isn't Secret Love Affair still not finished? The show is good but still... I Need Romance 3 should be in the OST Award category. Oh well, You From Another Star will make a clean sweep anyways.

They seriously need to put Jo Seung Woo for best actor nomination for his role at God's Gift. I haven't seen that kinda talented actor that can actually act and sing perfectly.

I see they added more people to the Popularity award lol I was wondering where was Ji Sung.

I'd have to check my drama list but I'm pretty sure 2013 had way better dramas than 4/5 of the nominees.

Good heavens! How long is one able to be called a "new" actor? After three or four dramas? All that said, I liked Baro's performance in God's Gift. It's very hard to act as a special needs person and in a year when so many people are doing mentally-challenged/disabled characters ..he nailed it.

And the popularity award? Let's see how the k-pop idol fans vote!

Thanks for posting this immense list.

It is really sad to see that when korea makes such world-class entertainment and they are not recognized for what its worth.

Yes I get all award shows are in somehow rigged and polarized, but you do come across few once in a while where real talent has deserved a mention and appreciated. That there is one critic that says for what it is and it gets noticed.

If the list is politicized, you can at least grudgingly analyze or support but this feels like none of it was actually considered or even debated on. Just like JB said, the person has not watched television at all.

And to disregard the entire entertainment industry just like that, to disregard all the things the actors, actress, Pds, writers, to the musicians, editors , technicians and down to the crew boys just like that , to not mind them at all, when they make and made the industry , that is fun, engaging and downright awesome sometimes really really really feels like a insult.

Its just too bad !

The list is out~
Glance through the movie category & liking it so far. I'm excited to see who will win actor top excellence. I'm hoping my oppa Ha Jung Woo will win again~ However, I think Song Kang ho will win this... Seeing that list also remind me that I need to finish watching Hope, which I not looking forward to... Wish I can read the spoiler somewhere tho. And I hope that Yeo Jin Gu will win new actor category since he is so good in Hwayi. He stand tall alongside his experienced appas. However, my gut saying that golden boy Kim Soo Hyun will bring it home tho.

Anddddd we move to the drama category where all the fuckery happens~ not gonna bitch about it.. I think most comment above already said what I think. LOL

Ha Jung Woo among the best of the best but I haven't seen "The Terror Live". I'm rooting for Song Kang ho. Loved him in Face Reader. Sol Kyung-gu was awesome in "Hope" but I think if they pick Uhm Ji-Won for best actress they might not give a double winner to "Hope"

I think Yeo Jin Gu has more experience than all his fellow nominees even though he is the youngest.

if you want to talk about Lee Jong Seok's nomination, talk about Yoo Ah In's nomination too whose drama Secret Love Affair hasn't even finished, and Lee Bo Young is nominated in the Best Actress Category so why can't LJS be nominated for the Best Actor one, he was the male lead of the drama and LBY was the female lead, so you think Kim Soo Hyun, Yoo Ah In's nomination is fair while LJS's nomination isn't?

EXCUSEEE ME?!?! where is Jo Seung WOOOOOO!?!?!

bb did a fantastic job in God's Gift and yet he is NOWHERE!?! wtf. Baro did a good job in God's Gift and even better in Answer Me - mainly because he had more screen time and I can see how he holds up as an actor. BUT seriously?! no... whoever made this list is seriously... dafuq man.

I am now seriously curious to see what the procedure is for the nomination of this award. I mean who gets to pick and choose the dramas/film/actor-ress goes on the ballot because NOTHING makes sense!!

also... WHERE is the OST for MASTER'S SUN!?!? omgah this is just a huge mess.

Fans can vote as many times they LOVE,

so I don't see the credibility of the voting system at all.

Actors and actress with huge fanbase will definitely win

the awards. It is not about excellent, talent or creative

acting.

Last year's Baeksang ignored Gaksital altogether so why does this year's list of Best Drama nominees irked so much?

I have not watched a lot of dramas but I am sure some good ones were left out of the list. I just get a feeling that Good Doctor is being singled out as "unworthy" to be nominated at all. To me, in the Best Drama category, Good Doctor is easily better than 2 other nominees there.

I know that Good Doctor was not well received here and it was not as popular as other nominees. Recently, Good Doctor won the Best Picture and Joo Won for Best Actor award in the 26th Korea Producers & Directors(PD) Awards(main broadcasters only, no cable). Their past winners for best picture were "The Chaser", "Tree with Deep Roots" and "Chuno" just to name the recent ones. For best actor, they were Yoo Joon Sang, Shin Ha Kyun and Jang Hyuk.

I do not know much about this Korea Producers & Directors Awards but I won't be too wrong in saying that Good Doctor did not win for popularity there.
