Odds and Ends: Workaholia

javabeans: What a long week. Then again, when your job is to report news and there IS no news (other than the one big thing in the news), the days start feeling really long. Uh, not to make a tragic current event all about me, of course. But the news has been so inundated with ferry updates (that aren’t really updates) that it’s a mental drain and you’re just dying for something lighter and happier, so you’re not depressed 24/7.

girlfriday: It was really hard not to be depressed. Every time I read another news story it put me in another funk. But yeah, when our work is dependent on entertainment news and the entertainment world stops in its tracks, it makes everything harder. I was this close to looking up stories about puppies.

javabeans: I briefly considered just taking the week off, but my OCD nature just couldn’t give up and I was determined to find things to post about. I don’t know why I do that. Why do we do that? Why do we treat Christmas and Thanksgiving and other big holidays like regular work days that must not dip below our non-holiday output?

girlfriday: I don’t know. It confuses my mother. But we do, because that’s how we are. There’s probably a clinical term for it, but we call it workaholia.

javabeans: I mean, looking back on it NOW, in this conversation, it seems like the obvious thing would be to decrease news stories for those occasions, instead of increasing stress about how you’re going to keep news flowing (even when there’s little news flowing).

girlfriday: Yes, this is likely what a sane person would do. Or so I hear.

javabeans: I notice that you never set me straight, though. You immediately agree with my crazy.

girlfriday: Well I wouldn’t want to be called a slacker.

javabeans: I remember my whole youth being pushed by my parents to work harder all the time (they wanted nosebleeds, dammit), and now they’re always worried about me always working and call me to remind me to go outside.

girlfriday: Omg, seriously. Parents, you did this to us! Why is this a mystery? My mom’s always like, “Why do you have to work on the weekends? Why can’t you go shopping with me?” Uh… because you raised me this way?

javabeans: My mom does the typical mom thing of asking if I’ve eaten or gone outside today and I just lie now.

girlfriday: I routinely tell my mother I eat vegetables. It’s occasionally true.

javabeans: It’s weird that watching dramas recreationally used to always make me hungry, but recapping dramas makes me forget to eat. So I guess the nice thing about our week hiatus was that I ate on a more regular schedule.

girlfriday: I don’t know about you, but I was starting to have withdrawal symptoms from the lack of television in my life. When you eat, breathe, sleep nothing but TV, a week of preemptions feels like eons.

javabeans: Oh, but I didn’t lack for television. I just got to catch up on everything I’d been behind on, which was nice. Until it all starts all over again and soon you’re just as buried as you were before.

girlfriday: Don’t remind me. See, even on a week off from dramas you were productive. I marathoned old Veronica Mars episodes.

javabeans: Well, I couldn’t stray too far from our usual schedule since we weren’t sure until the LAST POSSIBLE MOMENT whether the shows would air or not, and we were basically on call in case they did. The broadcasters were pretty ridiculous about the scheduling thing. I mean, I understand not knowing what to do. But the Big Three were basically playing chicken with each other, changing their minds based on what the other station decided.

girlfriday: Okay, that was officially the worst part. Who writes a TV schedule that reads: “10 pm: either God’s Gift or News Special”? It might as well say: We’ll think of something.

javabeans: It’s probably amazing that none of the stations have had a dead air accident yet. I do believe this is an accurate recounting of the schedule at one point: On Wednesday, SBS preempts Three Days, so then KBS preempts Golden Cross and MBC preempts Sly. All day Thursday the three stations are trying to figure out what to do about their dramas that night. Sly decides to to air an episode, until they hear that SBS and KBS are preempting, so it decides to preempt again. An hour later, a station reports possibly airing two episodes back-to-back, which spurs the other stations to declare that they’re considering that too. Ten o’clock rolls around and ultimately they all preempt. All that hullaballoo for nothing.

girlfriday: It’s stressing me out just remembering how many times we had to change our recapping schedule that day while we were waiting for at least one of the broadcasters to make up their minds. Because you know they’re all sitting there waiting for the first one to pull the trigger, so that the rest can do the same.

javabeans: Even that would have been better than what they did, which was to pull the trigger, then try to stuff that bullet back in the gun, then pull it again in a different direction, ad infinitum (or at least until about two hours before showtime). I remember the news stories would say, “The broadcaster has not yet decided whether the drama will air. They will make the final decision by late afternoon.” Who runs an industry like this?

girlfriday: One that liveshoots its dramas? Are we even surprised?

javabeans: That’s the thing about defying logic. Every time it happens, you’re surprised.

Pssst... *whispers* I lie about the veggies too. :D

Didn't notice that the major networks were just copying each other abt the preemptions, with chaotic results.

How can people see sincerity in that method of decision-making...?

No matter what a network does, someone will not like it and become an Official Internet Hater.

Just for example, in Hurricane Katrina in the US, the Vocal Rabid Left piled onto Fox news for not covering it enough. When the US embassy in Benghazi Libya was attacked a few months ago, the Vocal Rabid Right piled onto MSNBC for not covering it enough.

But I think the bottom line is that few - if any - of the networks have the guts to just say "OK, that is enough - htere is no new news".

In this case, I think there was Real demand, based on the feelings of viewers who were genuinely concerned about the fate of the students, the results of the search/rescue and recovery, and why on earth such a horrible thing could have happened. It basically took a whole week for people to come to terms with the accident. I know I checked the news many times a day, and felt better when the news anchors were there talking about this any time I turned on the tv.

I had to laugh about the up and down (again) TV scheduling, because it pretty much follows the same pattern around the world.

The first two or three days of a disaster you get mostly real news. But after that it is mostly recaps, wild speculation, and then recaps of recaps of news about the wild speculation.

But no news outlet will admit that - if you DON'T cover it to the point where it gets mind numbing, you are then deemed an insensitive bastard of a network.

Well, the dramas are supposed to start slowly airing now so you girls will have some more to review. You have been doing pretty well though. I didn't feel like there were a huge lack of posts on your part anyway. So does anyone know if this a full time job for the dramabeans girls or do they have another job. Any idea what they do . I'm curious because running the site must take up so much time that I wonder how they balance another job.

Javabeans has said that she does freelance work before. "Let’s just say I mostly freelance and usually have time to blog in between my work except when it gets super-busy and then I have to learn how to juggle. I am very bad at juggling."

A while back I got a set of 7 printed around 2008, but only two have partial translations.

I might just scan them and post them and hope someone can do a page by page for me.

it's too bad you guys didn't get much of rest even during preemption :(. As always, thanks for the updates and recaps.

When my shows were preempted, I checked out some that I deliberately skipped:
Hotel King, Witch's Romance and Gap Dong.

The plot of H King is just v old n tired;
Agree with many viewers (on ep 1 recap) who found Umh JW's face so botoxed to be distracting;
Gap Dong's Maria is the same girl in Thornbirds. She scared me enough that time.

LOL I've been reading a lot of dramabeans recaps and it's funny that there are a few people saying her face is botoxed. I think there are people in real life whose faces are not botoxed but they might just appear that way. Who cares if she got botox? It's so common nowadays with the upper class/middle class.

Some ppl see it and some don't.
Those who see it and don't find it pleasing would skip the show.
Those who don't see it or like the effect can continue to watch and enjoy the show.
Isn't that the way it always works w viewers regarding actors and dramas?

Ppl in real life can do whatever they want. They don't get closeups every 2 mins.

Agree on Hotel King. I only lasted about 2.5 episodes, and even with some fast forwarding.

Have not seen Thornbirds - one of the very few k dramas/movies I have never watched. I think I got about 5 minutes into it and just quit and never went back.

I was so depressed reading all the individual stories on NB about the ferry accident. It makes me cry all the damn time. I personally thought it was the right decision to preempt everything for a few days since it's their way to pay respect to the victims of the tragedy. But the fact that they waited for each other's decision just screams insincerity.

Even the whole deal with the press conferences have circled around them waiting for someone to make a move. When SBS decided to hold one for Doctor Stranger, MBC decided to follow suit for New Leaf after which KBS decided to hold a mini conference for Big Man because they already released the long preview. It's like they're waiting for one to decide, take the flak from the netizens so they can shield themselves. Ridiculous.

Other than that, you guys have been doing well. I didn't feel the lack of news all that much.

As an addict, I lovelovelove (and sometimes feel I needneedneed) the multiple posts per day here on DB. But I love you guys way more and I often worry that you're burning yourselves out and missing out on other life experiences. Working 365 days a year (including when you're sick!) just isn't sustainable in the long term. (And we know from White Christmas that Bad Things happen if you don't take a break for Christmas.) I really was hoping that while the dramas were on hiatus, y'all would try to get some much-needed rest and not feel you had to come up with the usual number of posts. Somebody needs to start a Recappers/Bloggers Anonymous group.

Maybe you could each see yourselves as a kickass workaholic K-drama heroine whose character arc revolves around learning that life is actually more fulfilling if she takes a holiday or three off, and finds time to shop with Mom once in a while, without really having to sacrifice much in the way of productivity/achievement.

As a start, how about limiting yourselves to just a What Are You Thankful For open thread on Thanksgiving, and a single post from Santa on Christmas? Baby steps... and we really would survive.

We ♥︎ you, we want you to be healthy and happy, and we want DB to be around for a looong time, so please redirect at least a teensy bit of your drive to overachieve towards taking good care of yourselves.

The weird thing about all the preemptions, and the restlessness it causes, is how out of touch I feel.

Not with the news, since that is everywhere, but with all the characters and commenters and recappers.

We are so used to being in each others' heads 24/7, the break feels discombobulating. How am I supposed to deal with not reading how you all feel about something or other?

Oh I guess there is work...I could think about that. :)

My prayers and thoughts continue to be with the family and friends. God love them..

I feel sad for the parents who lost their kids in the Sewol ferry sinking. It's so tragic. I have been keeping up with it on netizen buzz, omona, western media sources twitter and its so hortible and I can't help crying. I even watched a video of one of the parents and it was heartbreaking. I hope they will somehow get the strength to move on. I also hope they find everyone responsible for it like ship owner, captain and some crew, inspectors who didn't do their job, etc.

I also feel sorry for the parents whose children were kidnapped in Nigeria. I think over 200 girls were taken from their boarding school. I hope they get them back safe and sound although the Government is doing anything.

I check the news about the Sewol ferry everyday but usually there's nothing new. All the articles basically say the same thing. I can't imagine how depressing it must be for Koreans to see these news on TV everyday at every hour.

Not to be insensitive, but I am just confused on this whole cultural thing of being laser focused on one thing and with entire nation jumping on the bandwagon to start criticizing one thing that causes displeasure.

I mean how do people move on when the only thing they see everywhere is the thing that brings them down?
First few days are needed, yes, everyone needs time to come to terms with it. But after that ? Its another day somewhere else , in another part of the world life does go on.
I have lost people in my life and that was the thing that made me get up and spur me on.
That its another day, and the world goes on.

I don't know if its people mentality reflecting media or the media making people this way?

Hope the affected people find solace !

On the part of life goes on, you are right about that. But if something of this magnitude happens to you country, it's hard to actually think of going back to normal, for the next few days or weeks. For some, it's easy to say thatlife has to go on, but if it happens to you, i doubt that it will be that easy.

When Typhon Haiyan devasted Visayas last year, leaving thousands dead, it was as if my country stopped in it's tracks and nothing mattered. All we are craving for are news, hoping that the death toll climb won't go higher than the day before, hoping that friends we know are still alive. For weeks, we didn't care about anything, and that life went back to some semblance of normalcy after a few weeks.

I cannot blame the Big three for being indecisive, not because of ratings or anything, but out of respect for those who are affected. It takes time for people to recover from something like this, so i hope that people who recovers fast in every tragedy that was dealt to them, should understand that there are people who are still struggling to recover from it. It's not about being cultural. It's being compassionate.

Bleak night, boys of tomorrow, thirst, anitque bakery and today, i will check out i'm a cyborg but that's ok. Its going to be a YAI and Park chan wook film festival!

Anybody has any recommendations for movies?

The King and the Clown — really touching drama, Lee Jun-ki does a great job in his role. Definitely one of my favourite movies of all time.

Rockin' On Heaven's Door — predictable at times, but the movie keeps you emotionally invested in the characters. It's a lighthearted, heartwarming movie that will leave you shedding tears :')

Just take this time to catch up on doing the things that we have put off in life. Did we not learn from this sad event? Life is not all about work. It is about balancing how well we live our lives with work, health, and family. Work would mean nothing if we did not have our health or our loved ones.
