The con gets going for KBS’s Big Man

Time to check back in with Big Man, the KBS melo-thriller drama about a cadre of chaebols out to steal Kang Ji-hwan’s (Incarnation of Money) heart—and by that I mean literally cheat the heart right out of his chest cavity.

Apparently our resident chaebol Daniel Choi (School 2013) needs a new one (and again we’re talking literal blood-pumpers, not the emotional command center we refer to metaphorically as hearts), and thus begins the elaborate scheme that involves telling Kang Ji-hwan he’s a long-lost chaebol. (Seriously, with all the heart puns available to us, couldn’t they have just named this drama Heartless and be done with the Big Man stuff, which sounds so silly?)

In any case, the premise explains the poster above, which features the two sides to our hero’s character—the rumpled everyman he is at the outset, and the polished heir he becomes. Personally I think the second poster below is more visually appealing (or maybe I just like to feel like Kang Ji-hwan is staring into my soul), though the one above tells more of a story.

The teaser video below starts out light-hearted enough, but as soon as Daniel Choi starts having heart troubles, it takes on a thriller-like vibe. Kang Ji-hwan falls victim to a car crash, and when he wakes up his world has changed. Lee Da-hee (Secret) plays Daniel Choi’s first love, who eventually realized he didn’t love her enough for their relationship to become anything more. Now she works at the chaebol group and is privy to the knowledge that our hero was falsely entered into the family register for the sole purpose of enabling Daniel Choi’s heart transplant. Meanwhile, Jung So-min (Could We Get Married) plays the younger sister to the chaebol, who finds it ludicrous to imagine that the formerly roughneck hero is now her eldest oppa.

Big Man premieres on April 28 and airs on Mondays and Tuesdays. I know I’ll be watching at least the first week (thanks and damn you, Kang Ji-hwan), but I do hope the show proves to be more intriguing than my preconception of it. Please?

I must confess I checked out the trailer just to see if they'd show us more of that (rumored) cameo of Song Jae Rim being chased by Kang Ji Hwan on the street. :DDD

The pic from this DB post: http://www.dramabeans.com/2014/04/big-man-gets-a-two-week-delay/

... I saw it being passed around the SJL twitter bot accounts because lower left pic looks like Mo Il Hwa. LOL Not sure if it's a joke or he's really doing a cameo. I don't understand Hangul. :(

Me too, tata! :'( I miss my Rim Oppa! Huhuhuhu

I was expecting him to get loads of projects after AoF, but there's NOTHING! Even Aoki/Cutie Soo/Yoon Hyun Min is in Witch's Romance now, being such a great, sekshi asshole. hehe

Then I checked Rim Oppa's agency and it's SM C&C(!!!!) and thought, "oh that explains it..." SM's forte is managing idols/singers, not actors. See: Jung So Min vs Yoona

:(((

Yes, it was confirmed in one of song jae rim's recent interviews that he will be cameoing in episodes 1 AND 2 of Big Man. I know I'M going to be checking out at least the first two episodes. :D

Oops, I seem to have misremembered the details. I can't seem to find any mention of which episodes he's actually camoeing in, so it might just be episode 1. But SJR WILL be in Big Man, even if just for a few minutes!

Jung So Min looks really pretty in white/ivory dress.

While I don't hate the four leads, I don't really like them either. I also uninterested with the plot. It's really cliched and maybe has been done before.
I know sometimes drama can surprise you and all lies in the execution but what you can hope from this type of drama. We all know how everything will be played out.

I don't blame you, unfortunately, unless you've seen the quality of acting Kang Ji Hwan is capable of in his previous dramas (ex. 90 Days, Time to Love), like you, the average viewer who has to work or go to school the next day would not choose to stay up late to watch this drama based on the plot. I'm totally watching this drama for the lead actor, and KBS knows it. They know their only hope for decent ratings is Kang Ji Hwan. But as a fan of his who highly respects his approach to acting, I see his participation in this kind of project as a waste of his time and talent.

Ditto. I am not a fan of any of the leads. They all have quirks that annoys me as the episodes continues. The plot also seems overdone, over wrought. Like a good idea for the pilot and maybe 2 more episodes. Before turning into a huge mess - like most kdramas have been doing lately.

All flash no substance. A good first episode to sucker you in and then rubbish, rubbish, rubbish after that. Arrghh.

Quadruple A: Kang Ji Hwan is awesome (so is Daniel Choi!), but I have seen Kang Ji Hwan is some pretty mediocre dramas like Lie To Me (dreadful!). All his talent can't redeem really bad material. Let's hope for the best!

Me, too. The prospect leaves me unmoved.

Even worse, there is no going back to Kang Ji Hwan (a man capable of only two facial expressions) after being spoiled by Joo Sang Wook.

Aren't they rich? Can't they get a mechanical heart a la Roboleg in Sly and Single Again? Granted, a mechanical heart is kind of cumbersome to use and maintain but it not like a heart transplant will mean that one is able to become an athlete anyway... and at least Roboleg's cousin doesn't require anyone dead to save lives...

Yeah, and (not that I condone it) with that much money, they can probably bribe their way to the top of the recipients list. :|

Then again, maybe they saw what happened to Min Joon Gook and don't want that on their heads. Hehe...

The more cynical part of me thinks the production team just took apart the script of Incarnation of Money and pasted it back together, blindfolded. There's just too much copying going on. I've seen Kang Ji Hwan in too many car accidents and head-bandages. The screenwriter is completely out of original ideas at this point, which is very sad if you have one of Korea's most talented actors at your disposal. Such a fine actor, capable of so much (recently watched 90 Days, Time to Love- ignore the synopsis please, just watch it. you won't regret it. one of Kang Ji Hwan's finest performances. one of the best and most beautiful melodramas I've ever seen, in any language)

*Wails* Now I have to choose between this drama and A New Leaf, There's No way I'm letting go of You're All Surrounded, just to keep to my two dramas at a time quota. Darn you expensive data bundles. I was going to pass on this because of the premise, but Min-min looks so pretty with that red hair and Daniel Choi. Ottoke?!
I want to watch A New Leaf so badly because of Ajhussis and Jin Yi-han. Now I have to choose. :'( TT_TT

I'm just wondering if they want Kang Ji-hwan's character's heart, why not just kidnap him, put him into irreversible anaesthesia, and extract his heart? I'm sure rich chaebols are capable of doing illegal stuff like this especially in a drama, don't wanna think about what might happen in real life though *shudders*. Why the elaborate scheme of making him the chaebol heir, when they want his heart and in the process, he's gonna die anyway (if the plan to steal his heart succeeds)?

Aw I actually really like all these actors, but this is just so not my thing.

The sad thing about the name is that if Big Man were the name of a comedy, I'd be totally fine with it. But it's laughable as a title of a revenge/thriller. Heartless would have been a great name (not that it would make me watch it though).

Kang Ji-Hwan! Daniel Choi! Why?! I miss you so much. And I'm afraid I'll be missing you for much longer.

Jung So Min reminds me of Jung Ryeo Won from Salaryman with the red hair and that red dress, she also wore that dress in the first ep.

I wish I could not stand Kang Ji Hwan. I am way too smitten with him. lol. I'm curious which drama you saw him in that made you feel that way? It seems like people either love Kang Ji Hwan or can't stand him. There's no middle ground when it comes to this guy. So I'd really like to understand the other side. What about him do you not like? Thanks :)

Ohh I'm just sad daniel choi will be the bad guy in this one.. have always like him since babyfaced beauty. Well, hope he will not die in the end cause I'm pretty sure he'll not get kang ji hwan's heart. I'm still pissed off when Daniel Choi all but dissapeared and replaced by So Ji Sub in the whole fiasco plastic surgery drama Ghost...
