Yoon Shi-yoon enlists quietly in marine corps

There was no fanfare for Yoon Shi-yoon as he reported for basic training on April 28 at a marine base in Pohang. The 28-year old actor chose to enlist quietly, stating that he didn’t want to alert the media and draw attention to himself. According to a statement via his agency, he said, “If you’re a man you go to army, and I didn’t want to cause a disruption for any of the other soldiers. I just want to quietly fulfill my duty for the nation’s defense.” He opted to join the marines, which is widely considered the toughest place to complete mandatory military service, a desire he expressed early on when talk of enlistment began.

Yoon debuted in the popular star-making sitcom franchise High Kick Through the Roof, and followed it up with a headlining role in Baker King Kim Tak-gu, which shot him to leading man status at lightning speed. He spent the following years in dramas Me Too, Flower!, Flower Boy Next Door, and Prime Minister and I, and his first movie Professional Mr. Baek had its (very) delayed theatrical premiere earlier this month.

For me it’s Flower Boy Next Door’s Enrique that will always be the first image in my mind when I think of Yoon Shi-yoon — he had this childlike ebullience that was so memorable, and thinking of him in that role always puts a smile on my face. It’s always sad to send another one to the army, and even harder to think about the fact that he’s just the first of many 1986ers to enlist (Yoo Ah-in and Choi Jin-hyuk are among his cohorts due to report for duty this year). Come swiftly, 2016!

Very impressive on all counts. Going to the marines isn't easy and without fanfare..and he didn't go kicking and screaming at the last minute like so many other guys. Two years will fly by quickly.

I second the sentiments express here. I find it very commendable that he chose to go quietly (and he succeeded), and very considerate of him to not want to draw attention to himself, so as not to cause a disruption for his fellow soldiers. He did not make his leaving to the army about him. I really like him as an actor (I love the way he emotes, and I love it when he speaks foreign languages). I loved his chemistry with the actresses in Me Too, Flower!, and in Flower Boy Next Door (I haven't watched his other dramas yet).
Be safe Yoon Shi-yoon, we will be here, waiting for you.

Marines is proper noun. Please treat it as such. Marines are not soldiers. They are the Marines. They are not the Army/military. They are Marines. Please show your respect for them by getting this right. Otherwise, I completely agree with you! ^^

What Joy said. In the abstract, U. S. Marines are soldiers, but in day to day usage, they are very picky about being "Marines." Which annoys the regular army, but the rest of us put up with it because of their romantic reputation.

Interesting info Joy and Quiet Thought! I didn't know that.

Hello Me,

It's nice that you can see what I saw, since you agreed with me. I will concede that I am not well versed in the differences between the army, navy, airforce etc...

As for you correcting me, though I appreciate the distinctions you made, I also feel that you gave the impression that I made a mistake and was disrespectful on purpose, as reflected by the comments written by sarewoo and dani. It makes me wonder how well you paid attention to the text written by girlfriday above. When I wrote my comment, I took some of my words from that text, and it said (per Yoon Shi-yoon's words) " If you’re a man you go to army, and I didn’t want to cause a disruption for any of the other soldiers. I just want to quietly fulfill my duty for the nation’s defense."

As you can see, YSY said "soldiers." not "other marines." If I was wrong AND disrespectful, then so was YSY or the person who translated his quote from Korean to English. As you can also see, I posted my comment at 4:55am, and Dramabeans' time happens to be my time zone, so it was early in the morning. I didn't think I should research the proper terminology (and what the differences are) before writing my comment, since I just wanted to quickly express my support and my admiration for YSY, which I am assuming is what many of us writing here are doing.

I didn't write this response because I am angry (I actually am not), but merely to explain and show where I was coming from. I hope that you can see, given my perspective, that I didn't do anything "wrong per se," AND that my intent was not to be disrespectful. Why would I want to be that way towards actors and actresses I have never met? They haven't done anything to me :-)

The problem with being a nit-picking pedant attacking other people's inconsequential errors is that you are very likely to make at least one yourself. Exactly as you did.

You said of the Marines "they are not the Army/military" - that was only half-right. They're not the Army, but they very definitely ARE military. YSY is serving his compulsory MILITARY service in the Marines, a military force.

To once again borrow your own words, "Please show your respect for others by getting this right" before compounding someone else's error with one of your own. The very military phrase "hoist with your own petard" seems apt here.

I learned a few things from your post as well. I loved this, " 'hoist with your own petard,' seems apt here."

Oh, and I meant to say this, "I second the sentiments expressed here," instead of this, "I second the sentiments express here" Now THAT was a grammar mistake :-)

I saw it in the junk closet this weekend & thought I really have to open it & watch it. I realized I've had it so long that if for some reason it's defective, I won't be able to return it. Maybe May 6th will be the day to crack it open & celebrate the end of his enlistment & wait with bated breath for him to do a comeback project!!

For me he will always be Jae Hee from M2F. Miscast and cast at the last minute to save the day, he showed his emoting capabilities and some kind of maturity under that baby face. I wasn't sure he would be accepted in the Marines with his frail constitution... I guess the recent working out paid.
Good luck and come back in one piece. U.U

I haven't been able to figure out why people say that he was miscast. (Though discussing that in detail probably isn't in the spirit of a thread that's his only enlistment fanfare).

I loved him in that role. He had the stylishness of someone in the fashion industry, the youthful look of a phenom, and conveyed the emotional vulnerability of a broken past.

And as a romantic lead, that kiss. OMO. Best one I've seen.

With a quiet enlistment in the Marines, he continues to impress.

My love for him as an actor began with Me Too, Flower, a drama I adored at the beginning because of him and kept with all the way to end because when an actor makes me care my threshold for angst, etc rises significantly and I'll hold out to see them get their happy ending.

Flower Boy Next Door made me sure I'd adore watching him in anything and I delighted in seeing his child-like enthusiasm mixed with adult insight from week to week.

But it was Barefoot Friends that earned him my respect and admiration as a person. I stayed with that show almost til the bitter end for him. The way he approached whatever challenge came his way with a great attitude and a willingness to overcome his fear and grow was just amazing. Sadly it became all abiout cooking and I left thinking to come back when they moved on to a new topic. Anyone who watched knows how that went...

I'm sure he's going to do amazing in the Marines and can't wait to see him out again!

I think this is a smart move. It's so much better to enlist quietly then to make a huge brouhaha out of it (i.e. LT). And on a personal level, having a fans send-off before going to the army is like having to work till the last moment before enlistment, so I don't get why actors do that at all.

Seriously, rather than doing musicals and performances, going to the Marine Corps is a lot more interesting, no? I think he should be very proud of himself for serving in the marines. I mean, I thought guys would be proud to be in the toughest section in the army but apparently not very much so.

Who is LT?
I really liked what you said, it makes sense. I had never thought of the fans-send-off as having to work till the last moment, but that must true. Things would have to be organized in order for fans to be there (space wise and other things), collect the gifts some of them might bring, etc... And so the actor and his agency would be working until he turns around and leaves.

About your 2nd #, I guess some actors would prefer the easier route, while doing their military service if they could (and it turns out, they can and they do).

LT is Leetuk, from Super Junior. He went off with a LOT of fanfare, and his pre-enlistment announcement and discussion was dragged out waaaaaay too long. Not sure how much of it was personal or a company decision, though, as he's the leader of SuJu, and since they're a boy pop group, they have a different fandom demographic. It did get annoying, though, and many non-fans complained about it. He also was in the last batch of the celebrity soldier division and did musicals and things for his service instead of normal military stuffs. He wasn't in the more scandalous of celeb soldier scandals, though.

I agree with you about LT's handling of his going to do his MS maybe (or maybe not) being a decision made by him and/or his agency. I admire him for he will have to go through all the hard training but sometimes even if you choose to enlist as a marine, doesn't mean you're qualified for it. So, it doesn't mean all other celebrities who didn't get into marines were avoiding it. Some don't choose to enlist there, some simply can't get into there.

ROK Marine Corps, unlike the Army, is composed of all volunteers. They go through a thorough screening process not found in the Army such as physical test (in addition to medical screening) and personal interview. The competition for ROKMC is 4.5 to 1, meaning there are approximately 4 to 5 people competing to for 1 recruit slot. There are approximately 28,000 ROK Marines who make up two Divisions, 1 Brigade, and other smaller support or special commands. ROKMC has a storied history going back to the Korean War. It was modeled after USMC and conducted a combined amphibious landing with the USMC in the Incheon Landing.

It depends on the individual, I guess. There's Hyun Bin and Yoo Seung-ho, as you mentioned above, and now YSY who went off quietly. Some stars will want a minimum of fuss, others may want to hold fanmeetings to show their thanks for the support of their fans.

But there's also a median - Song Joong-ki is very popular but was able to get away with a small fanmeeting shortly before enlisting, and then spending the last day before actually going, with his family. It's all about each person's different circumstances, I guess. I wouldn't judge, either way. They go as per the rules, and that is enough for me.

I do agree with Mandy that HB was very sincere and grateful to the many fans who came to send him off, some even traveling from other countries. He was so moved (and so was I) that he cried, and he did a deep bow, the one where you kneel on the floor and you make your forehead touch the ground as you bow. I will admit that I was a little surprised when he did that.

I can understand him being so moved, some of the ajhummas (sp?) brought their young children to say goodbye (and that was in the morning). Many people had signs that said "We love you." I too would be moved if someone (that I don't know) drove or flew in (and paid money to do so, and find accommodations while in Korea), just to see me leave, and maybe do touristic things while in the country.

I can also see a positive side to a big send-off or welcoming back, as when HB came back, people (his fan club maybe?) donated a lot of rice that day. I always love it when celebrities' status can be used for a good cause. I do agree with the comments that said that either way is fine, since either way can serve a purpose and has its reasons.

I think YSY has great depth of character. His most resent choices: the Marines, instead of an easier duty, and going quietly, instead of a self-aggrandizing send-off, reconfirm that his is not a vain and vapid pretty boy.

I have thought for a while that his face is similar to So Ji-sub's face. I hope his acting and career matures to So Ji-sub's level.

At any rate, I hope learns much and stays safe while his is serving his country.

yes, from his interviews and offscreen/non-drama persona, he's always struck me as a quieter, rather introspective type. I hope these two years in the army will be good to him, and that he'll have a great career when he comes back - he's so talented.

(personally, I've always thought he looked like a younger Lee Jun-ki, and if he comes back with the maturity in his acting that LJK showed, it'll be great - not that I don't think he's a good actor already!)

2 years will fly by!
1986ers which means my two favorite oppas will soon be joining him. Yunho and Jaejoong.

I think I'll cry legit tears when Yunho and Jaejoong enlist. Jaejoong's enlisting some time this year, right?

No word about Yunho, but 86ers' "deadline" is next year. SM's pretty hush-hush about enlistments for as long as they can keep it.

What?! The nicest guy in the world and we didn't even get to send him off with well wishes? Don't worry, YSY, it's a lie that good guys finish last. You're always #1 to me. Be safe.

Yoon Shi Yooooooon!! The bookworm~~

Wow, I really think Flower Boy Next Door was the first thing I saw him in, lol. But even though Jin Rak was actually more my style I still loved Enrique. He was cute--annoying!--but cute, lmao. I'll miss him. I'll sure I'll think about him every once in a while. I guess I should track down more things he's in while he's away.

Good job, going quietly. It's better that way. I also like that it's a department he seems to genuinely want to do. Good Luck!

Awww, enrique! That will always be my favorite role of yours. Don't usually care if an actor chooses to do fan meet before going off to army or to enlist quietly, but what really made me proud was that you chose the more difficult route by choosing Marines. Good for you, cause now you have my respect.

It’s either gonna be a dry 2 years in dramaland or the rise of new stars. All the 86ers/87ers/88ers are planning on going to the army soon if they haven't already.
Next on list: Lee Min ho, Kim Soo Hyun, Jang Geun Suk, Kim Hyun Joong, Yoochun, Yoo Ah In, Lee Seung Gi, Jung il Woo, Choi Jin Hyuk

Some from this list i can live without, but most of these guys are the hottest stars of their generation. I can’t say i’m too excited with this news but it’ll be interesting how different things would be without these active actors in dramaland, some who like to do a drama a year. On the upside, every man comes back from the army with something new to offer -- acting-wise, experience, perhaps a revised look on life.

Current it boys Kim Woo Bin and Lee Jong Suk (both 24) will probably have a massive pile of dramas and projects to choose from now that their older sunbaes are leaving.
Song joong ki, yoo seung ho, ji hyun woo -- i’m still waiting for your return!

yes, the vacancies left by the '86/'87ers will probably mean that younger actors get to step up to the plate as leading men - Kim Woo-bin is one boy who'll kill it if he plays his cards right, and that's not even taking into account the returning '84/'85ers (felt like just yesterday I was watching them all go off to army).

I personally won't be sad, that's just the way dramaland is and actors of any calibre usually come back improved by the experience of military service - look at Lee Jun-ki, Jung Kyung-ho and Jo In-sung, to name just three.

Agree with you on the calmness he has. I too wonder what will happen in Korea when the more popular actors go in for their enlistment (LMH. LSG, KSH, etc...)

Wow! That was a bit of a surprise. He's joining The Marines? Didn't he just learn how to swim last year on Barefoot Friends? I'm pretty sure he was sacred of water and heights and he overcame his fears on that show. That's a big jump from fear of water to now a Marine!

At the beginning of Prime Minister and I it looked like he had bulked up with muscle so maybe he was working out to get accepted into the Corps.

So proud of how far he's come already!

I didn't notice his physique so much in PM&I (darn those winter coats!), but that's interesting.

He seems to be one of the most honest and grounded actors out there - I have no doubt he'll give it 110% and more!

Farewell YSY. You'll be missed.

As for him going quietly & all the praise for his choosing to do so as opposed to having a fan meeting and/or big send off, I think there are pros and cons to both ways but ultimately the individual should do whatever suits him.

There's nothing wrong with either way & as an outsider looking in, I have never understood why the ones that go quietly are praised to high heavens and by implication the ones who hold fanmeetings are denegrated a bit.

As a fan, I'd personally prefer to be able to say goodbye--the news that YSY quietly went away was a bit jarring. It seemed to come out of nowhere--even though we knew it would be coming eventually.

Either way, I wish him the best & I look forward to seeing his infectious, charming smile in the future.
