Kolorful Palette: Sketchy business [Triangle]

New dramas everywhere! So far I’m not sure about Triangle, but I see its potential. The cast is fairly compelling, and the structure is there to make for an intriguing story, as long as the writers can follow through.

I decided to change it up this week and did a little moleskine watercolor sketch from the opening sequence, which I thought was rather stylishly done. It did a good job of tying the three bothers together while showcasing how very different their lives are (although I wonder if I would’ve actually known they were brothers without reading a synopsis first). I also couldn’t resist a rather fancy drawing (mechanical pencil on computer paper!) of that adorable little doggy walking around with his cash money. I’m pretty sure this show was trying to buy my loyalty with that puppy (and it worked, at least a little).

My main gripe with this drama so far is that I have no idea what it’s going to be about, which makes it a little difficult to care about what’s happening. I assume the three brothers will have their destinies intertwine, but the overall story could go in a million different directions. I’m hoping the various plot-lines are deftly interwoven in a clever way that makes for a suspenseful story, since that would keep me watching. I do admire the rather bold choice to not show us the brother’s backstory in  the first two episodes. We’ve all experienced the horrible dragging that results from having to trudge through multiple episodes of childhood trauma before finally getting to the “real” story. Triangle has avoided that pitfall, but the downside is that we have less emotional attachment to the characters and everything feels detached, like we’re watching multiple dramas at once.

So far my favorite of the brothers is Young-dal, which is pretty odd considering his proclivities. I honestly feel like I’m going to throw-up throughout about half of his scenes, but I guess that’s a good thing since it means I’m getting invested. It’s pretty hard to watch someone with a horrible gambling addiction repeatedly make the same mistakes, not to mention all the other trouble he gets himself into, but I end up glued to the screen because I’m dying for him to actually make a good decision for once. I think I’m tougher on Dong-soo and find his behavior more deplorable because he’s a cop, so I expect him to uphold the law and just be a more upstanding person in general. I do really like Lee Beom-soo as an actor though, so I’m sure I’ll come around to liking him in the long run.

I’m impressed with the number of characters that were so seamlessly introduced (without confusing me!) and am surprised that I already care about the various potential romances, so I’ll definitely be checking out this drama next week. There weren’t any cheap hooks in the first two episodes to make me salivate for more, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes it’s better to play the long game, so lets hope this a drama that knows where it’s going.

awwww, that doggy <33333

And that is a gorgeous sketch, as always. Triangle isn't perfect, but placed versus Doctor Stranger it actually seems more coherent and has a better main OTP (he's done nothing but embarrass himself in front of her so far, but it still feels more convincing than the so-called epic romance of Dr Stranger - King2Hearts comparisons really don't work there when your female lead has all the charisma of a piece of nicely decorated cardboard and LJS has to do all the work acting-wise)

And I do agree on Young-dal being my favourite of the three bros so far, too. We don't know enough about maknae other than him having his own hidden issues, eldest is a dangerous mess and Young-dal, despite his multiple flaws, has a certain vulnerability to him that makes me wish he'd either get cut a break or stop making idiotic decisions.

(I'm sorry, I really didn't mean to write a tl;dr essay about Triangle AGAIN but my keyboard ran away with me!)

I have no idea why the thumbs up button doesn't allow one to undo a thumbs up...instead, the more you click, the more thumbs up the person gets...I mistakenly gave you a thumbs up three times and I am annoyed by this.

I really don't think you sat down the whole time to watch every scene of dr stranger...Dr stranger is awesome in every way so I have no idea what you are talking about. The love line might be lacking but it still doesn't take away from the beauty of the whole story .

You can stay annoyed, but I did watch every bit of Dr Stranger and happen to have an opinion different from yours.

I've mentioned liking LJS' performance and the PD's work, but so far the best relationship in the story was between Hoon and his dad. The love line is promoted as a big deal, though, and the fact that it is lacking is a flaw, sorry to say.

Flaw? Or, more like a low-key exit of a plot element the drama cannot make work? That would open up new love interest(s) for our beloved Dr. Outsider.

They could have given him a pet puppy that the big bad North Koreans threatened and it would have served the same function. She barely has a personality so I don't really get what he's into.

Where have we seen this actress before? Was she Mokdan in Gaksital? Was she in Five Fingers?

I love and admire it when people express passionate opinion and show willingness to stand by it. I have learned that such people also tend to be quite open-minded about new developments that might move them to modify their stance on things.

yeah, she was Mok Dan/Five Fingers. Pretty face, but not leading lady material even in the role of a stock love interest.

I've changed my mind about actresses I disliked in the past (Lee Yeon Hee and Go Ara) but that was when their performances showed serious improvement from the start of a drama. That doesn't look like it's the case here.

Based on the twin episodes of Triangle they have aired so far, I would like to give the dog the most-memorable on-screen presence/acting award.

Both works are beautiful. Thank you.
I gotta give to you that the story hasn't defined yet its main goal, but it may be a good thing at the end. Well, for know the characters are interesting enough to stick around. Specially the troublesome Youngdal.
