Oh Jung-se and Yook Sung-jae confirm Plus Nine Boys

We’ve got two leads signed on for tvN’s new drama Plus Nine Boys, named for the 9-, 19-, 29-, and 39-year-old characters at the center of the story. Funny film actor and constant dramaland sidekick Oh Jung-se (who’s currently cracking me up in every episode of A New Leaf) has confirmed that he’ll play the 39-year-old character, and idol Yook Sung-jae of group BtoB will play the 19-year-old. I didn’t recognize him at first, but he played Go Ara’s little bro Sook-sookie in Answer Me 1994. Meanwhile Kim Young-kwang (Good Doctor) is still in negotiations to play the 29-year-old lead.

The new drama from variety PD Yoo Hak-chan of Three Fools stars Oh Jung-se as a 39-year-old variety PD. Hm, life story? His character is a brilliant man who was once the PD of the nation’s top live music program. But he can’t seem to get over his ninth-year curse, a common belief that the ninth of anything is the roughest, including the ninth year of every decade of your life. If this drama ends up being about that curse, I might have to call it Curse of the Nines or something.

Anyway, his character has a massive fall from grace when the members of indie band Couch drop their pants onstage and flash the entire country during a live broadcast (this really happened on MBC in 2005, so…nine years ago). The PD naturally loses his position and gets shunted to another program to live the rest of his days in obscurity. He’s described as an otherwise eligible bachelor who isn’t lacking in looks or personality, but still can’t manage to get married.

There aren’t any details about the other characters yet, but the drama will be about four boys who each confront a new challenge in love and work as they approach the next decade of their lives. I’m guessing the curse of the nines will be a running theme among them, but so will growing up and moving forward.

Plus Nine Boys follows Marriage Not Dating on Fridays and Saturdays in August.

Maybe KYK will decide he's too busy with his movie and Rim Oppa can step in! It could happen, so don't lose hope!

I gave this some serious thought (LOL) and I'm willing to negotiate with the drama gods.

They can have KYK as a side-character here, but they must give me Song Jae Rim as God of Bath in exchange.

If drama gods accepted all of your wishes SJR will have to clone himself in order to find time for everything.

Psst…..please don't say that's just more of SJR to ogle ;-)

I don't want to tire him. Just really puzzled, then annoyed, then desperate and crazy that SM C&C didn't capitalize on his hype after AoF. :/ I was so sure they'd get him another project after that, but nope. None. Nada. Zilch. Bupkis. Diddly-squat. Wala.

I mean, geez, even Elijah Lee got a proj after Basketball! O_O

This is just me making fun of my frustration. :) I'll stop when they give the poor guy a proj. ^^

Maybe KYK will decide he's too busy with his movie and Rim Oppa will take over! Don't lose hope, yet - it could still happen!

The band was called "Couch"... It was Rock Band and invited by another band to support them! But I don't know what happened to them afterwards since they were not that big. Anyway, MBC "Music Camp" (which still airs today under a different name) got so much critisim that the PD really "left" in the end!

Ohh. That's just too bad I wonder what happened to the pd now.

Also this would be hilarious if MBC decided to do this sort of to vindicate itself. Well maybe if they let go of DJG2 there's a bit of hope for them yet

Oh, so that's the rationale of the "curse of the nines" (아홉수). I first heard it in GagCon's corner "Sistar 29", where it was Park Ji-seon's catchphrase ("아홉수라 그래!").

To those who know the "flashing" incident, any info on who/what/when/where/why/how/video???? Surprised there was a Korean Janet Jackson flashing incident...

9th year the hardest? hmmm. wouldn´t say...although yeah 29 was probably the worst year of my entire life.

so they will all have their age appropriate difficulties, huh? 9 year old maybe being bullied or something. 19 year old....um.... job hunting? or something something...29 - loan sharks, perhaps? 39 - pending divorce? or something in that manner....

SUNGJAE? I'm definitely watching this now. And I'm hoping no one brings up the same old debate about idols being casted in dramas yada yada yada. Lets give this one a chance before we judge him, shall we?

P.S. Sungjae looks a lot like Seo In-gook and I'm hoping he'll be similar to In-gook in the acting department too.

Well that depends on your personal preferences. For me, it's totally worth watching just for the actors because i'm such a big fan of KMM and KSJ. Although, the pacing is a bit slow(7 eps are out) and KSJ is still underutilized because the focus is still on KMM's character development.

I'm going to watch this, but I'm going to be disappointed if they don't have 9 incense sticks to burn so that the characters can go from 49 to 19 or 29 and "fix" stuff in their past that needs changing.

Really, are you serious?!

*judgmental eyeroll at YOU*

He's Yook Sungjae, and he's a not a nugu UNLIKE YOU WHO WILL BE FOREVER A NUGU TO EVERYONE OF US.

He's BTOB's sub-vocalist, sub-rapper, and maknae.
