Happy OT

World Cup 2014: Oh South Korea… my heart broke for you T.T
Looking forward to see more of Holland and Germany bc those are the only two left that I am really rooting for.

Doctor Stranger: I… It’s… yeah only 4 more eps^^

High School King: This is so much fun =) I love it that Min Suk’s friends know about his secret identity though it can’t take long for them to spill the beans to Miss stalker, right?

Trot Lovers: I’m in love! I love that it is ridiculous and over the top but has some heart underneath! Eunji is doing a great job so far and she has a really great voice! Ji Hyun Woo’s character is such an ass but he’s hilarious at that^^ And Shin Sung Rok… Damn he managed to crack me up so much :D

Gap Dong: I hate it that Tae Oh died! I mean redemption was never possible but he didn’t deserve what he got in the end -.- I hate it when they choose to kill the bad guy off bc that’s kinda the easy way out. It would be more gratifying if he had to spend the rest of his life behind bars but whatever… At least Mad Monk lived^^

Joseon Gunman: IT’S HERE =) And man did I love the first episode! Lee Jun Ki was born for sageuk wasn’t he? Seems like his character is on the cheeky side which THANK YOU drama! Definitely a keeper!

Have to catch up with YAAS, New Leaf and JG ep 2 bc it was a busy, busy week!

Variety:

Running Man: This was a great idol episode =) Summer season also means mud and water games are back and they honestly crack me up so much :D The cast was able to show that they’ve been doing this for a long time now and the idols and their outbursts had me in stitches^^ And Bora… You are adorable!

Superman Returns: Bigbang’s Daesung will forever be Uncle Fish for me now^^ I loved how Haru and Hye Jung were partying at the YG Family concert though seriously Hye Jung you don’t even know how to spell your husband’s band name?! LOL^^ And GD finally got a kiss from Haru^^
The twins… I can’t with their adorableness and now that it’s confirmed that Song Il Gook will join with his TRIPLETS… KBS is trying to kill me with the cute right?

1N2D S3: Aww you know it hasn’t been long that I saw the Season 1 episode were they visited the exact same village they visited for the very first episode of 1N2D and now S3 is there again. It was adorable to see how the people still remembered them and then we get the most awesome ‘Morning Angel’ in EUN JI WON! So great and so much fun =)

Omo I wanted to post my thoughts on the current dramas that I'm watching, but well, you said it all already :D

Loving Trot Lovers too! Shin Sung Rok is just darn hilarious haha
and Joseon Gunman needless to say.. Lee Jun Ki is just so handsome in that saeguk clothes! no argument here hehe

Re. Superman Returns: I loved how Hye Jung randomly popped in front of GD’s room and did a fangirl scream (Woot Big Bang, you guys are the best!) “now that it’s confirmed that Song Il Gook will join with his TRIPLETS…” - The last time I checked Soompi they said they are gonna cast some baby that is not born yet. Off to check. Btw, I kinda wish Sean of Jinusean is on the show too - wanna watch him running on the streets of Seoul with the kids in the stroller.

I can see why people would not like it because it tends to be over the top and ridiculous but that's what appeals to me :) I am totally in for that kind of humour and I just adore Eunji! I am also quite fond of Trot though I honestly don't know why^^

It settled out quite a bit in episode 2. Sort of. It IS over the top and kind of cartoony but it's got that cheesy heart that Trot itself seems to have, and I think people will respond to it affectionately if they give it a shot.

I loved trot lovers too! despite the choppy editing, it managed to win me over. everything is so utterly ridiculous I can't help but love it. It's so hammy and over the top.

superman returns was so great last week! i love seeing behind the scenes stuff and my goodness all the children are such gems

The ridiculousness is exactly what got me hooked^^ And Eunji's voice because she's great!

Oh yes the BTS stuff is so great and I know that was not last week but I loved how Haru basically knocked out Winner's Mino with one little word^^ I cracked up so much when Tablo introduced the 'handsome oppa' to his daughter and she just replied 'Where?' I was cackling :D

I am amazed by the twins over and over again because their growth is the most obvious one. And they are just so damn cute <3

that was kang seungyoon not mino (i only know cos i'm into their group these days cos i recently watched their survival reality show which was super stressful to watch but so engaging and entertaining) but yes omgsh! that was hilarious! haru is the greatest child, i adore her so much!

and its kind of amazing that we're literally seeing the twins grow up. i've seen previews for the upcoming shows and it looks so fun!~

Whoops... Right it was Seungyoon... Why was I thinking it was Mino?! Seungyoon is actually the only one I really know of Winner bc I heard his solo songs^^ I sincerely apologise to all Winner fans out there! ;)
I love how Haru and Tablo's relationship changed and she just says the best things ever! Uncle Fish is another gem xD

It's gonna be so much more fun now that they're walking^^

Happy OT everyone!

First off I want to thank everyone that recommended me dramas last week. I'm sorry that I wasn't able to reply to everyone who helped me and say thank you personally (I fell sleep :( ). I truly appreciate everyone that took a little time out of their busy lives to recommend me a drama or dramas. Thank you! :)

This week was mostly Jdrama week for me. I watched Bloody Monday season one and two. In my opinion it was a very good drama, I loved how there was zero romance in the drama. The only complaint I have about Bloody Monday was that I wanted more bromance, I wish the character Otoya Kujo was used more in the drama as the character had more potential. If the character was used more then it could of been Sato Takeru's break out drama like it was for Miura Haruma. I mean Sato Takeru and Miura Haruma are real life best friends so why couldn't the drama make more use of their real life bromance. But other than that I have no complaints about the drama, it is a very well executed thriller. And at least Sato Takeru has his own breakout role in the form of the movie adoption of Rurouni Kenshin, which is awesome too!

I read the replies to your post and other posts also. Especially the post about Saeguks caught my attention. I realized I had skipped many of them Thanks to suggestions on this board, I am now watching Warrior Baek Dong Soo and have many others cued up to save me during this drama slump.

Thanks Beanies :-)

Also watching
-A New Leaf --watching final epi today
-You're all Surrounded
-Trot Lovers
-High School King of Savvy -- really enjoying all the quirky characters. I wish it was on Viki though.

Will start:
Triangle
Wild Chive and Soy Bean Soup
Joseon Gunman (will wait for a few new episodes to develop)

Rewatched Sassy Girl Chun Hyang. (Skip watched) and I realized how tey really don't get together until the third act, also how much the Hong Sisters have improved since then.

Also watch Josen Gunman, but the plot hasn't started yet. Just the character intros. So I'm waiting it out before passing judgment.

Drama land is looking bleak. When will the drought end? It's so bad that it looks like people are translating old movies in order to keep amused.

And then worked on Polyglit a little more... tried to do social networking. If 1,000 people donate 10 dollars I'd be over my goal. In total so far I have about 1,200 dollars promised for when the campaign begins. 1/8th of the total goal of 8,000.

Heeello beanies! Happy friday! This post is brought to you frombthe mickey mouse room of KTV/noorebang that I got dragged to by work (and yes made to sing....)

Kdrama toddlers:
-found picture I took of two of the children; it looks like they are kissing (they were hugging) you also see a gorl looking on sadly in the background.

-5 year olds have a new couple: they were adorably sharing sweets (he refused to share with anyone else) also holding hands and couple riding on the "horse" (me)

- the hospital made an appearance again: still fatal illnesses and arguing doctors (ala doctor stranger)

-one of the 3/4 year old girls is shaping up to be every evil second lead/spoiled woman in dramas; beside being naughty she also hits people, demands to get her way. She told the teachers that if they were not nice to them she would hit them and make them loose their jobs and kill them. She also constantly lies. Doesn't help that her mum is a bit of a psycho too.

Watching;
Lets eat; cute drama. So much food porn. Also I kinda have the same set up as dae goon (male lead) atm (the floor is better than my bed okay!). Also attorney kim is adorkable.

Joseon gunman: not had time to start yet.

High school king of savy; not seen the last episode but liking it so far.

Trot lovers; not yet started

I initially laughed when I read your description of the evil second lead toddler, but I shouldn't be because I know there's absolutely nothing funny about it. I mean, she's already threatening people!! Unbelievable. *shaking head* ...... It kind of makes you wonder what the parents have been doing. ...... Both mom and the child sound like a handful.

Yay! Housemate left!! *clapping* ......... So tell us, how was the soju??

Korfan:

I'm good (and home :p). KTV was fun, my first song went very badly, but then the rest went okay.

Yes bad housemate left, though he did also leave me his washing to do + all his dirty dishes + rubbish that he took out of his room, but didn't bother remove from the flat. Soju wasn't to bad! Much better than most of the baijiu I've tasted!

Yeah she is a little monster. It sounds funny, but really her and her mother is as over the top dramatic as any villain/evil second lead I've seen. She will grow up to be the bully in school no doubt about it. Her mother also thinks that her daughter can do no wrong and believes all the lies the girl makes up (she's outright made some pretty bad lies about the teachers hitting her and stuff like that which is not true at all).

The girl also has no respect for the teachers after a misunderstanding brought about by two pieces of carrots that had her mother yell, hit and throw things in the office of the kindergarten. Cause of that she will just reply "No I don't have to do anything, because I can just tell my mum and then she will make you loose your job".

Yeah he is an awesome second lead in that really he just digs his own grave, but is just so dorky. Also I love the use of music and "mickey musing" in the drama. Just add to the fun.

The girl is a little monster. I'm lucky in that she no longer is in any classes that I teach in (after a carrot misunderstanding she ended up changing classes).

going in 4 weeks :) Looking forward to it a lot. Will be nice with a break and see my friend as well.

Happy OT everyone!

A bad week for me, filled with endless administration and thesis revisions to complete my studies.

Drama:
Dr.Stranger: Many thanks to Doctor Stranger, now I really wish I never watch medical drama again. I actually watch some, like Good Doctor, MTT and even Joseon's doctor Mandate of Heaven. But God knows, how DS is really messed up and the story is meandering to nowhere. Even Lee Jong Suk can't make me care with the story anymore. I still watch it but with WTF-face.

Joseon Gunman: Now that's really pretty show with amazing directing, acting, writing. Lee Jun Ki is a joy to watch. Not feel his chemistry with Nam Sang Mi yet, but maybe we'll see it more as the story progressed. Good sageuk as it stands.

A New Leaf: Goodbye. I Love you. I love Seok Joo, Ji Yoon, Sang Tae, and Khan <3

For anyone who have watched "King's Wrath/Fatal Encounter" is the movie really worth watching? I plan to watch it soon but I read mixed reviews about it. I'm not a big fan of the actors so I don't really care with the actors and care more about story.

Jeongjo and Sado will be very popular this year. Sado the movie. Sado in upcoming drama Secret Door, etc. I think I even know more about Jeongjo than other Joseon kings.

I saw "King's Wrath/Fatal Encounter" a few weeks ago. It held my interest for the full two hours. It's a bit like "Braveheart" with all the bludgeoning and decapitations, so if you're squirmy, I wouldn't recommend it. Since you're not going for the actors, you should be fine. IMO, although Hyun Bin takes top billing, it's really the bad guys who dominate most of the movie. He's just the object of their obsession.

High School King: Seo In Guk is hilarious and adorable. I love his facial expressions. I like Lee Soo Hyuk too. The female lead kinda reminds me of Betty La Fea, heroine in a telenovela. An ugly duckling that will transform because the power of love.

Re WildChives, from how writer-nim keep on dragging her characters (very ridiculously) i doubt anything will be tied up by this weekend, if it's true it'll end at 26. Unless they time jump another 12 years or sometime in future ala King's Family.

To anyone who plan on watching this drama, my sincere advise is to stop once they adult take over unless you really really love Nam Gong Min or trainwreck.

Trot Lovers:Seems like fun have to catch up.
New Leaf:Where the hell is Park Min young's Character going?
Joseon Gunman:Really want to watch it,but just am not in the mood for sagueks.

Watched some old stuff
Vampire Prosecuter 1 and 2:Awesome...am so into OCN series nowadays.First it was TEN now this one. and have to say Season 1 is the best Thriller drama!!So stylish...and have to say the lead actor is soooo charismatic While season 2 is a bit lagging.
Wish they had brought in the romantic story line. Both the leads are fantastic together.Love the heroine.Season 2 was a bit more complicated and less fun when compared with season 1.
Thanks to beanies for keeping on mentioning how awesome the show is....just wish for more seasons.

Hi Everyone!

It's great to see all of you again! ........ I hope you are all doing well.

For those of you who are following World Cup action, I hope your team is still in it.

Watched this week:

Dr. Stranger - I've almost reached the half-way point and things are still making sense. Heh.

You're All Surrounded - More enjoyable than I thought it would be. I'm liking all the main characters and I'm laughing out loud with half of them! ...... I'm finding it a good mix of serious and fun.

A New Leaf - Just started this one yesterday and so far so good. ...... On a purely shallow note, the two awesome-voiced ajusshi's ...... oh my! ...... So good, those two.

Warrior Baek Dong-soo - Continues to be very good. ...... Interesting to see the inner struggles of the assasins.

The Escape Artist - It's a Masterpiece Mystery program. ...... Wow, the baddie was totally creepy. Absolutely creepy! ...... And that ending! ...... The program certainly challenges the commonly held belief that everyone deserves to be defended in court.

Ok, that's about it for now. ....... Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

Well, let's see, we have:

- A doctor, who, after unvoluntarily being taken to NK as a child is now an adult in SK, and has his own medical clinic which he may or may not have opened under questionable and unexplained circumstances.

- This doctor is surrounded by others who may or may not want to kill him .... or help him.

- This doctor may or may not know people who may or may not want him to do surgeries.

- Another doctor who may or may not be the above-mentioned doctor's girlfriend ...... unknown because she may or may not be dead.

- This possible girlfriend/doctor may or may not be a spy.

- This possible girlfriend/doctor/spy may or may not really be in complete agreement with a yet to be explained plan that she is maybe or maybe not carrying out wholeheartedly.

- This possible girlfriend/doctor/spy might be or might not be receiving orders from others, yet to be seen if in fact they do exist.

- A third doctor, female, who thinks she may or may not be in love with her boyfriend, another doctor who keeps model castles on display in his office.

- A prime minister who maybe or maybe not wants either the castle doctor or the doctor with the perhaps-not-dead-girlfriend to operate on him.

- Castle doctor is on a revenge mission, but he may or may not sabotage it because he might be in love with the third doctor ..... or not.

There's more, of course, and I'm not even through half of the episodes yet.

How can all the questions and no answers not make any sense?

Clear as mud, I tell ya. :)

Hi people! :D

I can't believe it's Friday. No seriously, I actually thought it was Thursday today >.<

ANYWAY. I've watched a whole lot of dramas since Uni term finished -

Angel Eyes: Meh, it was pretty and all but I really loved the younger cast and the ending was just 'meh'. I don't get the 'I need to spend a year away from you even though I love you and you'll spend the year looking for me' track. But whatever. It was pretty anyway.

Two Weeks: I WATCHED this only because Joseon Gunman was coming out and I haven't watched LGK onscreen before. But hey, this show was amazing!

Nine: The most wackiest, time travelling show ever. Loved it.

Currently watching -

Hotel King: Started this like a week back - really like the lead's chemistry and the female lead has a bit of a Cheon Song Yi air to her. Just finished episode 16 and what, Roman Lee is the kid from Jae Wan's childhood days?!??! PS. CAN THE CREEPY VICE CHAIRMAN STOP CALLING JAE WAN JAYYYYDEN? Please.

Fall In Love With Me; Meh. This show. It's cute and well, WAS cute especially in the beginning but now it just tries too hard at the drama.

Running Man: HEHE, this episode was hilarious. I loved the whole city/countryside theme with the city kids saying 'I've never done this before' and the Running Man members saying 'we haven't either!'
hehe

I was so disappointed in the final episode of A New Leaf. It was a deep, thinky show with lots of potential, but it just faded out instead of giving us any real closure. Well, he was able to reconcile with his father, so that was something. I also felt like the final case was not as compelling as some of the other cases. Still, overall it was a good show. I would love to see a second season in which all the loose threads could be wrapped up.

Hi Beanies-

A few comments on older kdramas and an EXTREME RANDOM QUESTION ahead.

Been watching some older kdramas since the current runs haven't really captivated me.

Finished Bad Family: fun and heart warming, if you can get past the first episode (which took me a few times), it's worth a watch

Finished Dal Ja's Spring: Pleasantly surprised, fun and funny, with some real life characters (or as real life as kdrama gets). Had a bit of a hiccup toward the end, with what I assume was an extension, but nothing unbearable.

Now the extreme random question: I see toward the beginning of kdramas an animation with the number 15 (I think sometimes 12 too), what does this signify? Just curious.

Thanks in advance, happy viewing.

The number is age rating - so 15 means that the show is for people over 15 years of age.

0

That's correct, though it's Korean age of 15, so 14 for the rest of the world. Like 19+ is really 18+ for the rest of the world.

Required fields are marked *

The animation with number 15, sometimes 12 or 19 is for viewers' guide/parental guide. Like PG-13 or R-rated in USA. So 15 means it's okay for 15+ years and so on.
I read it somewhere.

A New Leaf. Duh. Otoke? Wae?

Hats off to the translators at Viki for their hard work on this bewildering legal seminar masquerading as a drama. I don't know how a writer can be given a stellar cast like this & come up with drama-bupkis but the lady managed to do it.

What to watch, what to watch?

This writer has only done 2 dramas before. Usually new writers get good actors and then bungle them, which is why I tend to avoid adaptations--usually new writers get the remakes and adaptations and good actors, which is where you find key-shaped bruises on our forehead, piece of skin ripped off and you feel partially blind and deaf.

It's very rare that new writers nail it on the first try. (Hong Sisters, the funny kind). IIRC, isn't this the one that claimed she had to fix the actor's mistakes from her second drama and got into huge trouble for saying that? (She wrote Golden Time and then bad mouthed the actors in it while drinking with a reporter.)

Yes, I read that about her. I don't think she can claim on this one that the actors didn't do justice to her dialogue. I think they all deserve an award for spouting that legal/financial gibberish with such conviction thru 16 episodes.

Dunno much about Choi Hee-ra but Golden Time and ANL are excellent, realistic, thought-provoking shows. The Hong Sisters' dramas, on the other hand, are addictive junk food with a huge soupcon of cliche. I guess the TV schedules have room for all of them, but to me ANL and Golden Time are no less gripping than, say, The Greatest Love.

Yeah, even with the episode cut, she could have made some alteration to the final episode that would put a more satisfactory finish. Props to sticking to her episodic guns I guess, but when who have at least two major characters who vanish in the final hour, a case that takes up 80% of the episode, and so many dangling plot threads it could make an ugly sweater, leaves me perplexed and annoyed.
She is a talented writer, and I like the slower burn nature of this show, but I fell if she paired up with a writer who can better handle narrative plot structure. Her shows would be less meandering and perhaps more successful.

:-( I am feeling ill. I knew it was bad when I couldn't even sit up to surf the web. Replied to Chulmoon with "ill" when he tried to chat. Too tired to talk to Seongil when he called or reply to his email asking for English corrections. Too tired to crack open a book to read. Too weak to blog.

Went to ER. Sitting there, felt the realization that friends thousands of miles away can't really do much when I am in the hospital. Still, getting worried messages wishing me good health and phone calls from Korea asking after me makes me feel loved.

Blek. Wish you were here. Sucks to live alone and be sick. Send me an Oppa or Omma with a bowl of samgyetang (chicken rice soup) to tuck me into bed and take care of me.

I want to sincerely THANK all of you who responded to my question about the prevalence of the abandoned child trope in KDrama.

When I asked the question I was really completely in the dark about the cultural and political surrounding the issue and I did not know where to even begin.

However, thanks to TS, windsun33*, Kim Yoonmi*, pogo, Sue, logan5, Julia the Berkshire Beanie, and Carole McDonnell, I learned more about the complexity of the issue that I could have imagined and the rich and varied contribution in each response made me not only want to learn more, but also strive to be more sensitive and attentive to just hoe complicated and overwhelming the experience has to be for those who are involved - be they children, biological parents, adoptive parents, good samaritans, administrators...

Thank you all so very much for the information, the discussion, and the personal accounts.

One last thing I would like to point out ...

If you are ever thinking about adoption, it's been my experience that being open and honest from the very beginning is the way to go. Birth secrets should be left to Kdramas, not real life.

I've always known I was adopted, and my parents made sure that I knew that I was their choice ... they chose me, and that simple fact made me feel immeasurably special, especially on the tough days. My uncle and aunt did the same with their two adopted children. Yes, there will always be curiosity when it comes to birth parents ... but love and honesty trumps EVERYTHING.

BTW, what you got was the simplified version, because that's only the beginning. It gets hairier from there. Adoption itself, definitely tests your moral fiber and asks to make a choice often between the bad and the bad choice. I simplified quite a bit due to lack of room/time.

Also, remember as I said, adoption tropes are not the sole property of Korea. It also goes over it in Europe and the US as part of the monomyth. The country that tends to understand adoption the best is Japan as a whole. Most of the time the adoption fiction from Japan doesn't make me want to go into large tirades and tends to handle it well, but then they don't really participate that much in international adoption, which may explain it. A very, very small percentage is adopted from Japan or to Japan. Within Japan it's a bit of a tradition dating to the Tokugawa to Meiji periods, which may be why the handling is so well done.

It's interesting what you write about Japan being good at talking about adoption. Namely, I recently read a newspaper article saying that adoptions are common in Japan, but adoptions of grown up people who are supposed to take over family businesses. The kind where children are given a new home and a family are complicated (bureaucracy) and few people manage to go through the whole process. Just for the record.

What I found most interesting about Japan and the adoption issue is how LITTLE fuss is made about it. In all the time I spent there, I never heard anything about the issues that come up so often in Korean dramas.

But all is not sweetness and light in Japan either - read this for another perspective http://sopheliajapan.blogspot.com/2013/01/adoption-in-japan-part-1-why-are-there.html#.U63lplJOUUQ

I forgot to note that from what I saw of Japanese orphanages, they are much more like a community or state run foster care system. A Japanese neighbor when I lived in Zushi had their kids taken away and placed in an orphanage due to neglect, and in the 4 more years that I lived in that neighborhood I never saw the kids again, though I did see the police come to their house at least once.

Sorry to hear you're sick. Usually when you're sick Koreans torture you with medicine. (I'm being facitious). But yes, acupuncture (Make you bleed--ahhh~ the blood is so dark), acupressure (the kind that hurts) and then bitter tasting medicines, and then scolding you for sleeping in the wrong direction, then at least my Appa did dousing for bad energy and scolded me again, and then when you feel halfway decent, push you out the door for a nice walk.

Other systems coddle you, make you chicken soup... but Korea? Nope. You regret getting sick in the first place and they scold you, "Why didn't you eat more Kimchi?" "You eat too fast. Chew more!" "You need to eat more Yin foods. Why are you eating so many yang foods?"

And then do things like put a wet washcloth on your head to bring down your fever. "Aissi, eat more!!" Don't get me wrong, the scolding is said with love, but to American ears it sounds like being abused.

But sick food in Korea is usually tailored to whatever you have. Porridge, etc. Sometimes they will think Samgyetang is the wrong food to eat when sick. Samgyetang tends to be "Yin" food, if IIRC, so if you have "Yin" problems, like a runny nose, then you *have* to eat "yang" foods. If your problem is "yang" then you have to eat "Yin" foods. I wanted to eat, "ginger" and I was scolded that's a "Yang" food and I eat too much "Yang".

After all that, then go to the hospital.

Dramas make it look all pretty, but the truth is that Korean medicine hurts like a female dog AND tastes nasty. (No sugar--why add sugar when that's bad for your health?) I've verified this with other Koreans who also say yes, it usually is like that. Korean medicine is rough... but at least you won't be concentrating on our original pain anymore.

Koreans comfort with touch too. Firm pats to the back, etc.

Korean Acupressure, at least, leaves bruises, so that if you have bas posture it hurts to hold your body that way. Most dramas show how gentle and therapeutic it is--I did it twice, one with my Korean father and once in the US it hurts both times, but upside, i did improve my posture from that, so less back and shoulder pain.

Point is, No, you don't want an Oppa who will give you disgusting medicine.

The time to have an Oppa is when you're feeling well and he wants to do things like bring you to an amusement park somewhere between the last part of the second act and the beginning of the torture of the third act.

With an Eomma, she'll most likely show up to stock your refrigerator. Because she'll think the problem is you're not eating the right things, and then she'll scold you in that warm way that makes you think of I Hear Your Voice Mother. But usually, characters don't get sick until the second or third act.

I think my number one annoyance that I had in Korea was that almost obligatory "force feeding" of anything from yucky "medicines", to food, to booze.

I guess Koreans think it is being polite, but I never met a non-Korean that was not at least slightly annoyed by it. I was glad that I was in a situation working for a US government contractor for most of the time where I could avoid much of it, which was usually associated with partying.

Dramas exaggerate it, but there is a lot of truth to it. That was some 15 years ago - don't know if Koreans have gotten any less aggressive in pushing food you or not, but judging from dramas it does not appear so.

I have this in China at times. Especially with food. They all complain that I eat to little and will force me to eat more. I eat enough, pluss they don't realize that the time they use to talk really fast to each other in chinese (so I tune out as I can't understand) I will eat. But since they don't see me eating, it can't have happened.

As for sick: drink more water! That's the first cure for everything here in my experience. Drink more water. But not cold water. Cold water is bad for you so you should drink hot/warm water.

So I just started watching 1N2D season 1 from where Lee Seung-gi joins. I have to say for something with an all male cast it's much more entertaining than I thought it would be, given that I usually find things with an all male cast incredibly boring.

Doctor Stranger- I give up.

A New Leaf- On hold until I go back and watch with mom.

Trot Lovers- I love it. People are complaining that Eun-ji always plays the same character but I don't really agree this time. Just because she's a little spunky doesn't make her the same character.

High School King- I liked the first week but I think it's missing something, because I haven't really felt like I had to keep watching so far this week.

You're all surrounded- I'm getting ready to watch this weeks episodes, I can't wait.

Hi all:

Hope everyone's doing well.

Dramas:

Trot Lovers: The human is a bit forced compared to Kng of Savvy, which has a ditsy effortlessness. But I oooooooove Trot, especially those life experience sad songs which have that Arirang quality of hard work and triumph. So, yeah..am in it for the music.

King of Savvy: My present Drama Crack. Love everyone in this drama. So far no real villains, just human beings on all the spectrum of friend/nemesis and good/evil ...which is so refreshing. Hyung told Min Suk there is no such thing as alies or enemies and the writer is totaly sticking to that premise.

Joseon Gunman: The episodes feel so short because each epi is soooo good. Just loving the roance right now and loving our elder villain and our lord/gunman villain.

My Dear Cat: Ay me, this is so cheesy and sweet nd has that overabundance of overrelatedness, secrets, and coincidence I hate in k-drmas. But alas, I am hooked. I needed a daily, I guess.

Yoona's Street: Still waiting for subs.

Loving KBS for all their variety and drama uploads. Trying to get back into anime-watching.

Have a good weekend, all.

I'm not kidding, I was going through the tv channels this past weekend and I ran across My Dear Cat. ......

The opening song was playing, the name "My Dear Cat" appeared and for whatever reason I thought, "Oh, it's one of those 2-part drama specials. " And I turned the tv off. ....... It never crossed my mind that this was a daily drama.

I can't fit in a daily drama even if I want to right now, but I hope you enjoy it!

Roommate is just so good. I think Shin Eomma has fnally made it into my night-time fantasies. That's when I know I think someone is majorly lover-material.

Gotta say I also love Min Woo. Kang Joon is spacey and incredibly pretty...an Yeon Cheol is so kind-hearted and thoughtful. But Min Woo definitely reminds me of the easily-wounded touchy insecure artistic souls I'd fall for in college.

I didn't think I would like Dong Wook. There is something so totally leading man handsome about him that it kinda turned me off. But is this guy a sweet mature intuitive person or what?

Love Go Yeon the best with Bom a close second and Soo Hyun the third. Soo Hyun seems to want a noona romance and she just totally misses the fact that she could fall into one with Min Woo. I so wish someone would decide to fall for Shin Eomma though. If not, I'm here. I'll take him.

Roommate: I like Ga Yeon and Chan Yeol most, then Bom. I think all of these people are a little misunderstood and I was especially sad that Nana takes everything people say so into the heart. But I was the same in her age.
agree about Dong Wook. it also shows from his roles, I feel like he chooses more mature types than is normal for his age. I wish he was together with others more though. There are some that could really use a big brother. Maybe he could also talk to Nana a little and tell her she doesn´t have to listen to mean comments so much. or maybe Shin Eomma can do that.
Ga Yeon doesn´t treat any one of them like a celebrity. she is repsectful to her sunbaes, but she can also kick them HARD like some Bruce Lee. No problemo. she the boss.

Nana = princess
Dong Wook = cool
Bom = funny
Se Ho = trying too hard
Sung Woo = laid back
Kang Joon = pretty boy airhead

Ga Yeon = quiet
So Ra = high maintenance
Chan Yeol = boy next door
Soo Hyun = borderline alcoholic

Dong Wook = mythical over-achieving prince who lets others wait for him and sigh
Bom = alien who works in a circus, but has also had various other jobs and has more to her than people know
Se Ho = Sancho Panza?
Sung Woo = the responsible one dropped from the sky into a puppy zoo
Kang Joon = the considerate sleepyhead noona-puppy
Min Woo = the master of part time jobs in THIS house, who needs duct tape in the corners of his mouth so his smile won´t tear his head in half
Ga Yeon = possible Bruce Lee female reincarnation?
So Ra = smartypants doggy mommy
Chan Yeol = the future famous songwriter-beekeeper-cook-doctor-carpenter etc. (don´t mature too much, you´ll be Yoda)
Soo Hyun = pretender

Hello...been a while since last OT

Finished GapDong. While i liked the drama i didn't love it. First half was great, second half not so much. My main gripe being that that didn't explore the original Gapdong much...he was too straight forward for me. For a guy who did such horrendous things, i woulda liked a little more character development but oh well...introduced me to Kim Min-Jung who i love now so~~~~

Pissed that Viki doesn't have Joseon Gunman or the High School show with Seo In-Guk especially since I signed up for Viki Pass and im not really reaping the benefits yet since none of the shows ive been watching recently are on there! I don't know but recently I've noticed that Viki isn't getting some shows....shows that they would have been able to get before. What's going on over there?!!!

IMO Viki is concentrating on getting more international content, not just from Korea or even Asia. I notice they have a lot more content from Turkey now. Also, as a QC, I get a lot of notices asking for subbing help for certain dramas that they want to offer in more areas, but can't because they aren't yet translated into enough languages.

Having watched Bride of the Century over on Drama Fever, I really noticed that the subs are much better on Viki.

Happy Friday! I finally remembered t sit down at the computer early enough to post on the OT. When it is hot, I like to walk early, so by the time I get back, there are already 200 posts and people have moved on.

WC: Go USA! This is the first time I have ever watched WC games. Soccer, like baseball, is just too slow for me. Give me a fast break, high scoring basketball game any day (Go Warriors!).

Dramas:

Angel Eyes: Did that just end? Seemed to drag towards the end with all the unneeded emotional pain. I know they were in LOVE, but I would have a hard time maintaining a relationship with someone who was hat much of a drama queen. Thank God she went away for a year to pull herself together.

Doctor Stranger: What can I say? All kinds of crazy here. I did read an article about the black market DVDs ben popular in NK. IMO the show does not preset NK in a very good light--SK either, for that matter. Wich makes me a little confused why NK is calling the James Franco/Seth Rogen movie and "act of war." Who takes Seth Rogen seriously? Apparently Kim Jong Un does.

You're All Surrounded: The one spot of sunshine in the dramaverse right now. I'm dying to know how the assemblyman and his daughter (?!) are connected to the school nurse murder. I think Birkin Bitch murdered her with her purse. (I never saw a crime like that before, but I am sure it is realistic.)

A New Leaf: Watched it half subtitled and I don't think I need to rewatch. What happened to this excellent drama? It just petered out.

Old Stuff:

Emergency Couple:Wow! How did I miss this when it was airing? I haven't cried so hard since Secret Garden. I think I got hooked because I married and divorced young and it was just about as crazy as their relationship. Very intense. I didn't marry the same guy again, chose someone more low key who helped me settle down. I'm glad the characters were able to work it out though. Still, in the back of my mind I worry that under stress he will return to his verbally abusive ways.

Bride of the Century: I liked how it turned into a semi-horror drama towards the end. Otherwise it as filled with all sorts of crazy. I mean, she has his baby, doesn't tell him for almost 2 years, and he's hunky-dory with that? Lee Hong-gi does have the most adorable "I love you so much" face, though. I would have had a hard time staying mad at him.

Definite possibility.

I was a bit surprised at the reported cost. It must be vintage because some late-model Birkins are "only" $3,500. The 2013 model was $11,000.

Vintage ones, apparently, auction at 30-100,000!!!!

At these prices, I would DEMAND that my luxury bag double as a murder weapon, wouldn't you?

Hello Beanies!!! Happy OT!!!

This month, I'm doing a second go for my recap blog. I finally settled with this blog name: madramangpinay.blogspot.com = it means a dramatic Filpina. It's mostly for recaps of Philippine dramas, random Korean drama musings like:
madramangpinay.blogspot.com/2014/06/korean-dramaland-2014-my-dream-otp.html and other stuff. I used to recap Philippine dramas in 2012(way before I got into Korean dramas) but our primetime dramas here airs everyday from Mon to Fri and it's so hard to keep up with a daily drama and when a drama becomes successful rating-wise, the networks always extends it for as long as they possibly can.

So, currently I chose to recap a drama that airs once a week and so far it's working for me. It also helps that I have 2 of my friends as my co-admin.

Currently, on watch list: ANL, YAS and of course Joseon Gunman.

Also, QIHM and Nine, both dramas are soooo good and soooo addicting.

Hi Everybody!

So A New Leaf ended. It was a good show. Could have been better if not for the shorter run, but I don't really complain. The three men - Seok Ju, Sang Tae and CEO Cha were great. My predicament that Park Min Young's character was superfluous turned out to be correct, IMO. She was there, but in many cases Sang Tae could replace her, and in other cases any intern would do. The non-hateful female second lead was a surprise. As soon as I saw her for the first time I imagined torture pillates equipment and her scheming against the human kind. Actually, the relationship between her and SJ was meaningful - they both learned something about their own desires and needs, which is so much more compelling that another love at first sight.
I must say, I don't mind the open-ish ending. I prefer that to putting everything "in place" at all cost, mostly defying logic and common sense.

Started Trot Lovers. The first ep was so-so, the second slightly better. The main asset is Eun Ji. Ji Hyun Woo is not bad, but it's a bit difficult to get to used to his new teeth. It feels as if he lost a bit of his cheeky charm. I hope he proves me wrong and delivers a shining performance. Though that depends on the writer.

And last but not least, I need to praise Jae Joong for picking a perfect role for himself and doing well in Triangle. I find him very believable and I love how he can step away from being cool. He can be brutal, lowly, cowardly when the situation is like that, but when he's being brave, determined or madly in love, we know why and follow what happens next.

Have a great weekend, Everybody!

Imperfection is eradicated from Korean entertainment cirlcles to the point where lack thereof becomes a flaw.
I don't mind people being treated by orthodontist when needed, nor getting veeners when necessary, and it makes me sad when even very young actors/entertainers are fixed in a quick way instead of receiving proper (but time-consumming) treatment. Because few of them can have the leisure to wear braces for over a year...

Hello Beanies!!! Happy OT!!!

This month, I'm doing a second go for my recap blog. I finally settled with this blog name:

madramangpinay.blogspot.com = it means a dramatic Filpina.

Hi guys! :D
Do you guys actually read all the comments here? Haha.

I actually started watching K-Dramas thanks to SNSD. And when I started watching K-Dramas, I used to find the dramas my favourite singers are in and then watch the drama. These days I dont anymore haha. Lee Jongsuk is one of my faves. And there's Kim Soohyun and Lee Seunggi and basically every K-Actor is <3.

Anyways,

Doctor Stranger : I don't even want to read the recaps lol. They are always treating patients life as a game, and Jaehee//Seunghee mystery, yadayadayada. And Hoon's love for Seunghee is just dangerous. OVERDOSE! And Soohyun's character is not as sassy as the first few episodes as before. I stopped at episode 9. /Rolls eyes/

You're All Surrounded : I haven't catch up with this week's 2 episodes yet but LAST WEEK'S EPISODE was sort of a fanservice for us who have been watching 1 episode per week? My favourite part ever is watching Lee Seunggi being a grumpy qtpie and being so adorable and picky and when the "Hyung" conversation start I just--- OMG Weirdo. I like this change. Haha.

So that's basically it. The dramas that I'm watching ^__^

Howdy Beanies,

My visits are few and far between, but popped in today. Summer is slipping away. I did my annual pilgrimage to visit my mothers grave. That is all. I have not managed to read even one book for pleasure this summer except 1493 but that's history so it does not count. Nor have I managed lunch or dinner with Shuk or even one walk in the beach, or a visit to the art museum. I've been to the aquarium once.

I've recently needed to be creative. No writing, sigh. That manifested in header making of all things lol.

Rewatched TVD. I like Caroline even more. Damon is smoking hot. I finally finished Fringe after all these years. I really loved that how that no one seemed to get was really mostly about Olivia. And wrapped the last season of the Matt Smith Doctor Who arc. I can't stand that guy. River Song made me stay. I'm not interested in the new guy either. Tennant spoiled me.

State of My K Drama Viewing:

YAS-It's all just okay.

Dr. Stranger: Sigh, how does Hoon manage to stay entertaining amidst the wtf plot?

I'm kinda sorta watching Grandpas, I dropped out, but watched another epi.

High School King-The female lead makes Eun-bi and Jan-di look like they had it together. I'm not sure to make of this show. Seo in Guk is hilarious tormenting her, and holy moly Lee Soo-hyuk is smoking up the screen.

Trot Lovers-Loved the first two episodes.

FILWM-Potential in the beginning, began to go the way of the wtf around epi 8.

Love Myself or You-A slow ride, it's starting to be a little too circular. I also like the beta type lead male, he's a little more quiet and tentative than we normally see. I really like the prickly lead female character that isn't the bright cheerful paste a smile on girl. it's refreshing. But "they" keep throwing her into damsel in distress mode. The usual passing out after getting caught in the rain stuff, insert eye roll here.

I will check out The Night Watchman when it comes out, and I'll be interested to see what happens with Song Jae Rim and the Mermaid thing.

Happy Summer Viewing Beanies!!

Re. Love Myself or You - overused skinship. Why must the reason for skinship be the same, like, every single time? The girl is about to lose her balance and the guy is always there to catch her. It’s fun to watch them bickering though - Kai Qi pulling a straight face gets to me each time.

<<But “they” keep throwing her into damsel in distress mode. The usual passing out after getting caught in the rain stuff, insert eye roll here.

Yes! It's like the moment she (re)meets the guy she's no longer capable of standing on her own feet and gravity is affecting her in some sort of bizarre way. And of course half the time she falls it is mouth-to-mouth. They are seriously overdoing it.

I wish they'd be more original with the second female too. I mean the guy who cheated the lead for the sous chef, essentially also cheated her... She should gang up with Puff for girl power, not throw silly hissy fits over any and everything. It's her choice to be a 'flower vase' or not.

I like the beta-male too, he's sweet. Everything else is overdone/clichéd/recycled as ever in TW dramas though, so my expectations are low, sadly.

Hello Beanies, Happy OT!!

The first week of my summer break didn't go the way i had expected it to. My landlord called me on Saturday to tell me he wants to renovate the apartment and i have till friday to move out. Finding an apartment is sooooo friggin hard, let alone a good one, and i had 5 days to find one, and its like only the really terrible ones are available. I just keep wishing i could punch that wicked ex-landlord of mine, but since i can't, i have to make do with cursing him in my head. I finally found a moderate apartment on Wednesday, while i was trying to get settled in, i got a call that my younger brother wasn't feeling too well. I then had to travel 9hrs to go stay with him and take care of him, and all i want to do right now is wring his neck. He just keeps ordering me around and milking the whole situation for what it's worth, i do what he says and then he starts whining and complaining i didn't do it right. Aiiisssshhhhh!! i just want to beat him black and blue. And fanning the flames to my growing irritation, is my mother who i keep getting never-ending calls and texts from, asking about her "only son", and it's really amazing how she manages to interject those two words into every sentence she makes. "So has my only son woken up yet?" "So my only son called me to tell me that he told you he wanted something and you refused" "So why did you refuse my only son that?" etc. She just keeps talking like he's a 9yo kid and not a 24yo guy. I'm just waiting impatiently for him to get better, so i can flee back to my city and deal with my own issues there.

Wasn't able to catch up with recent episodes or start any new dramas.

Have a great weekend everyone :D

Hi, everyone!

Wow, it has been forever since I last posted on here! But I just got back a few days ago from six weeks in Japan, which was awesome! So excited to be going back this fall for an exchange program through my school.

Now that I'm back with a reliable internet connection (the place we stayed in Japan only had the neighbor's ridiculously slow connection, so we spent a good amount of time at Starbucks...), I'm back to watching dramas, starting with Joseon Gunman. Like many, I had really high expectations for it, and have not been disappointed. So excited to see where it goes! Also, my mom started watching it with my sister and I, and now she's hooked. :) after the first episode ended, she sort of stared at the screen saying, "Thats it?" Me: "For this episode, yes." My sister: "Welcome to K-dramas! There's no exit." Ha--she literally just walked into my room and called me "K-drama Buddy." She's probably mostly kidding, but still.

That's all for now, since I'm working on catching up on things like Running Man and trying to decide which drama to watch next... Have a great weekend, everyone!

Oh! I forgot--on the plane I watched My Papparoti. Great movie, though I'm almost surprised I liked it so much. It really must have been the actors that carried it (or maybe I have a weakness for that kind of story) because there really wasn't anything about it that I haven't seen before, and yet it had me tearing up, especially towards the end.

Though I confess to being drama addicted enough to actually go to an Internet room to watch Triangle episodes 13 and 14, it was quite the experience (both going to get the room as well as being in the room itself).

And yes, Joseon Gunman is so good! And it looks like it'll get even better, fighting!

Hi! I am late, but here now. I was at the opening of an exhibitoon where I have 2 pieces (from rusted metal and apartment keys and all sort of scrap metal stuff). It is an exhibition in Tallinn Art Hall called Orna-MENTAL that brings together artisans and professional artists. There are some really big names and I was lucky to be included, and my former teachers gave me compliments. It seems many people really took time to look at my work. but there were some magnificent pieces. It is great to be part of that community.

Not in the best mood to talk dramas. Thinking about that....Korean army stuff. So much talk on BBC home page lately. Harsh stuff. Bullying, psychological torture? But cmon, you´re a grown man. Shooting people for being bullied? Seems like there are now grown-ups...but over-grown kids living in video game world. That is what BBC pointed at too – through Korean army generals. That guys who come to the army are a totally different type. They are spoiled and childish. They are used to just playing around and relying on their parents a lot. So, don´t know the real truth. Maybe they overreacted. Maybe the generals are claiming it to hide their own mistakes. Maybe, maybe maybe. But it certainly makes me wonder....why would you bully anyone in the army service if they could end up saving your life in battle one day?

On to dramas: I said I wouldn´t. I totally was not gonna take a look. But I was curious. Trot Lovers. The beginning a bit draggy. Shin Sung Rok was so funny without even doing much. seeing someone locked into a hallway with him still makes me a little nervous. Also elevator. It will fall, right?...nope, didn´t. Dinner? What, no poison? Wtf. What is going on? an UN-killer? No way.
Bong Do phfew, I mean. What´s his name again. Hyun Woo...s.... lips. The end.

Umm. Fall in love with me. That girl is so annoying. It could have been a good drama. I demand a restart. Start over. U-u-undo my sad! (Trot...no, Eurovision lovers understand. Now thinking about it, trot must be no more tacky than Eurovision? ) Back to this drama. Goodness. The award for the stupidest, most blank, annoying, stubborn, dim heroine goes to.... that babe. I really want to ask....How´s your health, girl? Depressed much? Khmm. Numb? I already feel numb because of her. Redo. Take the concept and redo it someone. More than a bad drama I hate a ruined possibly could be good drama. There is a difference.

uh I have a headache. the art hall was so full of people there was no air at all. I had coffee at a book shops´eco-ice cresam cafe (and some lemon ice) but it only helped for a short while. now it is at it again.

Here I come, the defender of Trot!
Trot is not tackier than Eurovision. It is different, and I dare say, it's better. How is it better? 1. the singers can sing. Their style may be not everybody's cup ot tea, but I think it does need skill and a good voice. 2, It doesn't pretend to be something else. They sing songs, the kind of people have been enjoying for decades - about love, life and so on. They ofthen have a charm of being simple and honest. Some of them may seem tacky, but I have an impression it's rather tongue-in-cheek than all serious (and thus laughable like many pop acts).
Basically, I don't think trot is worse than any kind of pop.
Oh, and it's catchy.

I have two favourite songs.
The first is a classic - Shabang shabang. It's great for jogging, btw ;)
http://youtu.be/Kta0zl-G3lc

The other one was written by G-Dragon and sung by Daesung of Big Bang. It's hilarious. And what I like - it's a funny song, meant as a joke, but produced carefully and profesionally, with a spark. (And it's the only song by Big Bang that I like)

I listen to other genres too. In fact, they are jarringly different (like this, my favourite singer http://youtu.be/qFPz23l_g24), but it's not like I feel confined to one style. Once I went to a concert and a muscian I spoke to afterwards, said that there is music for your brain and music for your legs. There are times (very often, actually most of the time) that I stick to songs based on poetry, both classical and contemporary. The texts are so rich, you can really keep finding new meanings and messages all the time, moreover I am a fan of innovative and clever use of words, even if it's a song about flowers and ducks. But sometimes I also feel the need to listen to typically "leg" music, even club music. And trot makes a very good leg music, IMO way better than Kpop. I also listen to the Polish equivalent of trot, which is also a test to people's tollerance and imagination. Many would think I am a country bumpkin who knows nothing else and has no taste and they turn away, but people who are open and listen, learn that in those disregarded songs you can find passages from Chopin and once in 100 songs there is a piece of real poetry.

I should have congratulated you first: Congratulations on your exhibition. Care to provide any links to photos? :)

As for the army... I think the bullying exists everywhere. May have something to do with Lucipher Effext described by Zimbardo. I personally think it is also influenced by the social hierarchy, where the one above believes to have right to bully the one below. When I look at the scenes in dramas where even girls from good schools gang up to step on somebody, I am always shocked. Especially, when the victim doesn't even try to defend herself/himself.
Though, the point that guys who go to army are big kids who were always taken care of by mummy (the scary ajumma!) and can't cope with their own problems is very, very interesting. But then again, many people say it is good in that men go to army, because during the MS they get the umbilical cord finally cut off.

Hi all! ^^

My current dramas: You’re All Surrounded, Joseon Gunman, Mixed-up Investigative Agency.

I haven’t watched the 2nd ep of YAS this week, but I’m enjoying this show. I was close to tears several times in ep 13. Even when the plot isn’t moving super fast, the character moments are good to see. I feel like LSG has become more attractive too. LOL

Totally gushing over JG. Loving every bit of it already.
Hope everyone will get it a chance, especially if anyone is in a drama slump right now.

Just started MUIA (2007 drama) this week. Gotta have something to marathon while I wait for my current shows. =P The story is ok so far. Maybe because it’s an older drama that I don’t feel that connected to it yet. It’s funny though and kinda wacky. But the actress playing Eun Jae has such a blank, expressionless face that it’s distracting/frustrating. I can’t tell if the character is just suppose to be like that or is the actress truly like that also. Oh, I do love how Yong Su uses his knowledge from comic books to save people.

I think if a show is popular, people (myself included) tend to think that anyone interested has already seen it/read the recap and knows it anyway and get carried away describing the details... The clear rules apply to recaps (no information about the next episodes), but I guess there was a post some time ago where Javabeans explained the spoiler use. Need to look for that one.

I thought no spoilers for an episode that has aired on a recap for any preceding episodes? (Current dramas.)

I'm not sure about the OT, which is a more open forum... I mean, I don't know which shows/spoilers you are talking about, but if something aired earlier this week it seems only natural people would talk about it. Or if it aired last night and has been recapped already...

My perception is that "no spoilers" is in relation to episode recaps-in other words don't comment on drama content beyond that specific episode. I do not think it applies to open thread.

Hey everyone, hope you've had a good week! This is a very good week in dramas - Trot Lovers looks promising, my underdog ride-or-die bias Triangle got pretty fantastic this week (never thought I'd say it, but this show has officially turned me into a fan of Jaejoong as an actor. There, I admit it - Young-dal is tearing me up!). I'd thought episode 15 was good, but then 16 happened and basically killed me dead from feelings (can we have ALL the Young-dal/Dong-soo scenes forever, please!).

but the real kicker, JOSEON GUNMAN IS HERE!!!!!!!!!!! And it looks fantastic, pretty much perfect in every way down to its side characters and of course oppa my prince himself <333333 There's only ONE quibble I have with this drama, and it's overt cutesiness of the heroine. And of course, the fact that our hero will have massive amounts of PAIN in his future because this does come from the Princess' Man team*sob* but that's the point of the story, so...

I keep wondering what makes Young Dal/Dong Chul such an interesting character - is it writing, is it acting or is it that JJ found such a great way to convey whatever the writer created. Or is it something in JJ's eyes that makes people compassionate (and girls swoon)?

As much as I like LJK, I hate sageuks, so I'm going to stay behind on that bandwagon. But I hope all viewers will be satisfied!

re: Young-dal, it's a combination of them all but mostly the third, I think.

He's a complex character, the kind we see can be an utter scumbag but who still makes you want to root for him despite everything. And Jaejoong's done a really good job of bringing out all the facets of his character, I actually couldn't imagine anyone else in the role because he just makes it his own - contradictions and all.

I personally love sageuks (Arang & the Magistrate is my all-time favourite, followed by The Princess' Man) but I've seen some real clunkers in the genre. Still, this one looks awesome even if the heroine is no Shin Mina and I am desperately wishing for the grow-up event for her.

Now that you say the role fits Jaejoong perfectly... It sure does, but I think Joo Ji Hoon could handle it well too. He can be reckless, mysterious, dark but also dorky. *goes to rewatch something with JJH*

oooh I adore Joo Ji-hoon and he is definitely all those things you mentioned plus mega talented but I just can't see him being as roughed-up as Young-dal, he's way too polished.

Young-dal is practically feral sometimes, it's hard to see JJH going there even if he is a champion at tugging on heartstrings.

0

There was this film where JJH played the prince and the pauper. He pretty much "disgrced himself" as the poor, vulgar man, he let go of his polished image. I believe He just hasn't had a chance to show that side of himself, but I am sure he would be capable of portraying such a lowlife. It's just that the public demands a beautiful and dignified JJH and producers satisfy that desire.

Hi everyone!

I have been visiting this site for a couple years, but never posted on the OT before. But Doctor Stranger has driven me to it.

I just have to say: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! WTF is up with this show!? It's so ridiculous! Someone in the comments compared it to when a little kid tells a story, where nothing makes sense and everything is random. I'm a kindergarten teacher and I totally think that remark nails it! So. So. So. many levels of crazy.

I'm up to episode 9 and can I just say, I have NO IDEA who the OTP is. I thought Hoon was going to stay with his first love - pretty much expected it. But then he's backhugging Soo Hyun AND the director adds in a romantic ballad while he does it!

Who am I supposed to root for?? I like Soo Hyun better, and I think Hoon is kind of a jerk. He totally flirts with her, even though he's in love with someone else.

That said, I will not be able to stop watching. LJS is my weakness. Especially since I know in later episodes he gets rid of the perm.

Alas, it's not random for the sake of being random, but it just turned out this way. And that's been my beef with this show from the very first episode. The writer bit more than he/she can chew and instead of an exciting, innovative show we have a lame plot with black holes of crazy, ridiculous motivations, weird characterizations, many interesting issues left behind and an adorable Hoon. Really, LJS is the only good thing about this drama.

oh, the puns that could come out of Dr Strangelove/Dr Stranger..... (and yes, it is a classic, Strangelove I mean!)

I suggest drinking through all the nonsense, Dr Stranger looked like silly fun through a sake haze. On the other hand you might damage your liver from all the drinking, ha.

I have no idea why they inserted all that skinship between Soo Hyun and Hoon, especially when he initiates it. Pretty sure the obsession with first love deal is somewhat undermined by getting all touchy-feely with another woman, but then this drama does not follow logic anyway so I suggest just drinking. (no don't drink too much)

So, is this summer just especially full of must watch dramas or is it always like this.

I got addicted to Witch's Romance--and that was the first drama that I watched as it ran. Now I am trying to find time to keep up with YAAS, High School King, Trot Lovers and now Joseon Gunman. Because they are all so good. I guess it is a good sign of how well received a show is when you can find the subtitles online several hours after the raws are uploaded.

So I have a silly question: is it me or is there a lot of overlap in the supporting actors for sageuks? I mean, I haven't watched a whole lot of them (Faith and Moon Embracing the Sun), but it just feels like there are a lot of familiar faces in JG--especially in the group of ministers.

So next week, thanks to this site, I imagine I'll be adding Fated to Love You to my list of must watch dramas. :)

Started watching 'My Daughter Seo Young' and really enjoying it. I love dramas where the male lead single mindedly pursues the female lead who doesn't care for him at first. So far I have enjoyed the following along these lines:
All about Eve
Baby Faced Beauty
Best Love
Be Strong Geum Soon
Boys over flowers/Meteor Garden
Dae Jang Geum
Devil beside you
Lovers in Paris
Queen of Reversals (2nd male lead)
Secret Garden
Stairway to heaven
Any other suggestions?

Hey everyone...happy OT!

Busy week, hot weather. Just doesn't compute, especially when you work in a place where there's no air conditioning -.-

Triangle: So finally the Dong-soo/Young-dal brother reveal...which was a tear-jerking moment for sure. This week's eps were definitely Young-dal's to shine, to rage and to gain some momentum against baddie trio. The incredulous look on Yang-ha's face both at the Elder Ahn's reveal of "his person" and afterward was supremely satisfying, although I don't think I'll be really happy until he gets his -- screw that he's the youngest bro, I want him to break down and go crazy when he finds out.

His desperate attempt to guilt-trip Jung-hee with his sob story showed how far delusional he's become, grasping at straws to "convince" her to be with him. As far as I'm concerned, she should slap and spit on his face and stomp on his feet, after putting Young-dal in prison. I loved how she rejected Young-dal's suggestion of breaking up, to spare her from his quest for revenge...I love the honesty that they both have with each other.

Joseon Gunman: Ahhh I'm so happy this is living up to my expectations! Of course, it doesn't hurt to have spiffy Lee Jun-ki rockin' the hanbok too ;) I keep finding myself comparing it to The Princess's Man because there are so many parallels, but that's also a good thing because that was a sageuk done right. I'm already loving the story that is building up, although again - the politics stuff is a bore (and to think, one of my undergrad degrees is poli sci, haha). I find Choi intriguing, because while he seems to be aligned with Kim, he's got his own agenda. I'm very curious about how Yoon-kang is going to jump to the other side and be the one to hold the gun, at odds with his dad's side of thinking.

I don't get the hating remarks about Nam Sang-mi, because I honestly think she's doing a good job as Soo-in. Like JB said, she's best as bubbly and spirited...the cross-dressing bit was something I didn't expect, but it totally adds to the budding relationship between her and Yoon-kang. Yoon-kang was so freakin' endearing in his constant teasing and ribbing of Soo-in.

Endless Love: I tuned in to the first ep, only to drop my jaw in shock that Jung Kyung-ho seemingly is killed off! But to my relief, that's not the case...although I know that this is gonna be melo and he's gonna be pining for the girl -.- But it wasn't that bad at all, although of course it's set back in the 70s/80s era. I like spunky fiery In-ae, and how badass is she to kick butt and ride the motorcycle in style? (although I gotta point out, saw it on SBS's entertainment weekly show that the motorcycle was stationary on a truck -.- haha) I'm gonna keep tuning in because of the great cast, although it might test my limits on the two brothers/one girl triangle here (similar to Triangle's Young-dal/Yang-ha/Jung-hee although we all know Yang-ha ain't got a rat's chance)...

oh, Yang-ha. You put her boyfriend in jail for a year and she STILL likes him after that, so much for the grand woo-her-while-he's-gone plan. And they'd even become friends during that year, but no, that isn't enough for him. Oh, well, at least he declares his intentions directly to Jung-hee and she declares her rejection right back.

That's what I like about Jung-hee...so upfront and honest about her thoughts and feelings - despite her lack of education and wealth, she makes up for that with spunk.

Yang-ha is such a selfish, self-centered jerk and you're absolutely right, his "plan" to sweep Jung-hee off of her feet by throwing Young-dal in prison backfired badly. It reminded me of Cha Soo-hyuk of Lights and Shadows, because of his plan to get Ki-tae out of the picture so he could make the moves on his girl Jung-hye. Although in that case, she went along and "dated" him so that he wouldn't kill Ki-tae...she lacked the spunk that Jung-hee has (thank goodness). Of course, once Ki-tae was able to come back , she went back to him. I'm hoping her slight hesitation doesn't mean she's getting swayed towards him in any way. No wishy-washyness in the last stretch please...it would be so out of character, so I'm hoping I'm not knocking on wood :/

re: Joseon Gunman, I admit I'm critical of the female lead, but it's not the actress that bothers me, it's the way the character is written currently.

I suppose it is a bit jarring for Soo-in to be overly cutesy/bubbly when she's supposed to be a nerdy intellectual...it was a bit weird at first, but I guess it was either making her a girly girl or tomboy -- and this was what the writer compromised on. Her back-and-forth between prim lady and cross-dressing scholar is also different, kinda like Sungkyungkwan Scandal...except Yoon-hee wasn't as extreme in her real and undercover personas.

I'm hoping the next few episodes will straighten it out. I still love the drama nonetheless :)

The cutesiness of the character really doesn't sit well with the actress, imo. I feel like the writer was trying to write a character who wasn't the same as Moon Chae-won in The Princess' Man, and somehow ended up with someone who's worse at disguises than Kim Yoon-hee of Sungkyunkwan Scandal.

(I hope it changes, and soon - the drama is perfect otherwise.)

I'd have to agree with you about that, because I think acting overly cutesy doesn't really fit well with most actresses -- there's a certain "it" factor that is necessary to make that acting not look so off/fake, if you know what I mean.

Or it could also be that we're comparing Nam Sang-mi with Lee Jun-ki's other counterpart Shin Min-ah. I know I am, even subconsciously...gosh darn Arang and the Magistrate for raising the bar so high ;P

Completely forgot to mention this...

Has anyone listened to So Ji-sub's new track? He just released a new hip-hop album, and I do know he's released albums in the past.

I was quite impressed because it actually sounded good! You can hear traces of his familiar voice but it's also kinda like -- this is the same So Ji-sub who was so freakin grumpy-liciously good in Master's Sun?!? ;)

I like SJS a lot but I couldn't care less about hip hop. I also prefer to stay away from that after I saw one of his older songs with translated lyrics. It was soooooooo cheesy that I regretted reading it.
I wish SJS also sang other kinds of music from time to time. His rendtion of Yukinohana (the song from I'm Sorry I Love You) was pretty good.

I actually don't listen to hip-hop all that much anymore (I'm a rock/alt rock girl, with snippets of pop and kpop here and there). But I was a hip-hop junkie before college. Even then, I never listened to it for the lyrics.

I don't listen to Korean hip-hop even more (with the exception of Yoon Mi-rae), because they try to be so...hard? lol...So Ji-sub's prior songs were cringe-worthy because it seemed like he was trying so hard -.-

Had no idea he sang too...which has me thinking to re-watch I'm Sorry I Love You just to hear it. Thanks for the tip! :)

FINALLY able to comment in a OT, it's been weeks since I have had that possibility!

The tragedy is that I had all my hopes pinned on the World Cup…and then my government defaulted on the RIDICULOUSLY HIGH payment for tv rights and I guess everyone and their mother went online because my internet access was a joke this week.

Anyway, haven't read the comments yet, just need to post while the internet will let me.

People, I need to rant.

I've touched on my problem with the way male characters handle jackets in my comment on HSK.

I just do NOT get the hands in pockets under my jacket pose. It bears repeating: Kdrama namjas, don't do it, it ruins the lines!

Worse still, they ALL, young or old, flower boy or ahjussi, SIT DOWN WITH THEIR JACKETS STILL BUTTONED. They don't even hike up their pant legs.

Are all these snazzy suits actually polyester knock-offs? Why else would they mistreat them like that???

But, I feel there is a more urgent problem to address.

I think it is time some International Body steps in and imposes a moratorium on double-breasted suits in kdramas.

No, seriously! IMO, this type of jacket does NOT fit every silhouette. And not only that, they are too tight. Well, jackets in general are too tight. Just look at all those straining buttons! On slimmer than slim men

(Though the coach from Shut Up! Flower Boy Band is husky and HIS buttons strained too!)

The paradox for me is that the shoulders usually fit wonderfully well. I have seen some wrinkly sleeve caps but overall, the shoulders, front and back, are deliciously perfect.

However, they either overfit at the waist OR the jacket lengths are too short. Hmmm, that could mean they size down to get the correct shoulders or something.

Whatever it is, needs to stop! Just like I was struck by the unusual ratio of glasses, this over abundance of double-breasted suits is alarming!!!

Kdrama stylists, you are dressing CHAEBOLS, not ADMIRALS, there's a difference!!!

(I'm not even going to touch that 7/8 pant leg, hopeless case at this point)

In my next rant, I will touch on the subject of those thick, contrast soled shoes I keep seeing on screen.

As for the women, I'm seriously disturbed.

I had such high hopes for Witch's Romance 's wardrobe for UJH but seriously!

It was alL OVERSIZED. DROP SHOULDER. BELL SLEEVES TOPS!!!

*takes a minute to compose herself*

The woman looked like a cross-dressing linebacker most of the time. I just can't!

And what happened to the Golden Ratio, kdrama stylists!?!?!

I've read all about the fixation with legs vs cleavage but the resulting fashion choices, I feel, are a complete utter FAIL.

The silhouettes are completely unbalanced. Take episode 14 of You're all surrounded. The witness looked like she was wearing her CEO boyfriend's dress shirt or, worse still, PJ top. You couldn't even see the bottoms I suppose she was wearing under all that fabric.

And most SK...

[continued]

And most SK actresses/idols/celebrities being A cups, you get this waterfall of fabric straight from the shoulders.

Add to that the predominance of light colored or pastel garments and they look like wraiths!

I think this is sad. Some of them seem quite curvaceous in the hips. This pear shape does need volume on top to widen the shoulders but they are overcompensating, I feel.

Somebody do something!!!

End of rant! (that is, until something else occurs to me *winks*)

Now, on to my current situation: I want to watch ALL the dramas, LOL!

I'm currently seriously watching HSK, YAS, TL and FGIU though I am, as I said above, behind on most of them.

I plan to catch up My Dear Cat and Joseon Gunman though I saw some of the latter's episode 1 and I love it already.

I confess to falling hopelessly in LURVE with LJK in Arang, to the point where I only refer to him as The Magistrate. He's so cheeky, it kills me!

But how much do I hate geographic restrictions??? I have the Viki app on my tablet and I hope they get all the new series after their tv run. That way I can watch the shows in bed (coincidentally, nighttime or crazy-early is when my signal is the strongest = seamless, continuous streaming)

I'm looking forward to Fated to Love You because of JH's upper lip and CJH's voice. Also curious about Don't Worry, It's Love but I have reservations.

Oh, and the best news this week? My fellow teacher/friend I converted to dramas last year? The noona romance hater? COMPLETELY IN LOVE WITH SLA, YES!!! she says she loves it "to death", that it's her "drug", that she replays "certain scenes over and over again".

Did I tell you guys I converted one of my HS senior students to Kpop? Unlike most of the other girls I taught last year, P. totally gets the Flower Boy appeal, LOL! Not that I'm a huge fan of the genre, but I showed them one or two of the latest videos every Saturday after class. Yes, I am *that* systematic!

Give me a minute and I'll get ALL OF THEM hooked on dramas or kpop *eeeevil laugh*

Well, my three groups are great kids but maybe a little too literal. One of them is actively on the lookout for a Real Live Korean for me (incidentally, there was a KOICA bus parked near my house last month, had no idea the agency was here!!!) while the other is giving me Fr Lit quotes my Future Korean Boyfriend could use to woo me.

Hum, not quite where I'm at, personally but at least she's reading, right?

Yet a third thinks if I have kids with an Asian man, I will have "cute babies with great hair that can marry [her] own child" (sic)

Should I be worried?

Sorry this was soooo loooong but I am behind on several OT commenting opportunities, as you know.

Oh my gosh!!! The clothes, the clothes, the clothes...the drapes the women are covering themselves with still still have the pull cord attached! The patterns, the necklines and the cut hurt so much. Sometimes the clothes are an outright assault to the eyes.
You are so right about double-breasted suits and their limited application. Best left to admirals and doormen.
When talking about kdrama wardrobe don`ts we can not forget Lee Min-ho`s sweaters. I smile just thinking about those silly things.
I throughly enjoyed you clothing rant, please rant again.

I feel your frustration about the World Cup, I reallly do! Especially now with knockout rounds coming. And yeah, styling decisions......ours not to reason why sometimes.

I understand if the ugly/absurd styling is deliberate aesthetic choice to express something about the character (like Master's Sun and its extremely dandy but absurd-looking hero) but otherwise? No.

(and omg you are watching Arang!!!! It's possibly my favourite drama of all time, Lee Jun-ki oppa and Shin Mina together was like my dream come true and I was so delighted when the drama turned out good.)

Calling all Lovers of the Noona Romance Trope!

I am working on a project called The Noona Meter. My hope is to compile a comprehensive list of dramas from all over Asia in which the main theme is a Noona Romance. It is a work in progress, but I would be wonderfully thankful to anyone who stopped in and offered up suggestions and ideas to make it even better!

How are you defining a "noona" romance? Any older woman-younger man drama?

The reason I am asking is that I do not think everyone defines a noona romance the same way.

To me a noona is someone that is an older sister influence, someone the younger male would have grown up around or is a a few years older sunbae at work or school.

I do not consider may-december relationships or age gap relationships when younger man meets older woman or workplace boss lady and subordinate as "noona" romances. For example, in the way I look at things, What's Up Fox is a noona romance, but Dalja's Spring or Secret Love Affair is not a noona romance.

my 2 cents, whatever that is worth lol

Sigh. Found out yesterday, after watching the 26th episode, that the 26th episode is the last. The ending was sadly rushed for something that was intended to last 50 episodes. It was definitely a poorly written and produced show--in particular, the music selection was off, some of the characters' decisions made no sense, the tone skewed too far in opposite directions from comedic to melodramatic--but the OTP story line just sucked me in. Even though some of the side character stories were going in a direction I didn't like, I was looking forward to watching the characters develop nonetheless. I found myself feeling surprisingly dissatisfied not knowing the fate of the side characters. I wish they had extended even just two episodes so that more of the characters have their endings.
