Two of three musketeers courted for tvN’s action sageuk

The Three Musketeers hasn’t yet completed its lineup, but more names are in the mix to join Lee Jin-wook, who’s looking to reteam with his Nine producers in the Joseon fusion sageuk about a group of warriors who protect Crown Prince Sohyeon.

Lee Jin-wook is set to play the crown prince, and Jung Yong-hwa (Mi-rae’s Choice) and Yang Dong-geun (Hero) are in solid contention to play two of the three bodyguards. I’d heard Jung Yong-hwa mentioned as a potential cast addition a while back, and while he still hasn’t confirmed for sure, he’s still described as positively considering. Given the fact that his name has remained in the mix throughout the process, I’m thinking there’s a pretty high chance he’ll stick around. With the drama based on the Dumas novel, that makes his role the D’Artagnan of the group; in this story, he’ll be a poor young man who comes up to the capital city to attempt the examination for military officers.

The character Yang Dong-geun would play had previously floated Kim Ji-seok as a possibility, but now the offer is in Yang’s court. And the third musketeer will be cast via open auditions, which is an interesting choice that’ll hopefully yield a compelling new face. Seems as great a chance as any to take a risk on a rookie, with three big names on hand to carry the burden of expectations and little to lose for the last sidekick. I’m always game for a newbie to root for.

The Three Musketeers plans to premiere in August, and will adopt a new broadcast model for tvN, which plans to air once a week, with 12 episodes per season and three seasons in total.

I think those are "Why-oh-why-is-it-not-Rim-Oppa" tears.

There's still room for him, though, Mary! If the drama sticks with the novel, there should actually be FOUR musketeers. The original three + D'Artagnan!

Song Jae-rim

Oh ok. Is he in consideration for this drama?

Not that I'm aware of, sadly. We just want him in a new drama. More precisely, we want him in every drama. : )

I'm sure this is not much of a consolation for you, mary, but I'd much rather see your oppa as a musketeer than Yonghwa any day. :)

i thought lee jin wook should be one of the three musketeers... i think that would be a better/more challenging role for him..lee jin wook and kim ju seok as two of the three would've been awesome!!

I agree with you. I think musketeer role will suit Lee Jin Wook better. But let's see.. I hope he nailed it again this time just like he blown us away with his performance in Nine.

i'm just under the impression that the crown prince usually does..uhmm.. nothing.. i hope i'm mistaken though..
the three musketeers would have a more colorful/action-driven/ romantic back story than the crown prince would.

Jung... still meh about him. If they cast a newbie, there's a chance of said newbie upstaging Jung. Muahah. Fine by me.

YDG, yeah bring it on... Maybe Lee Jung can join them too but but of course we need a flower boy face...

Who else free at this moment. Choi Woo Shik already cast in another drama. Yeon Jun Suk too. How bout Yoon Bak, Park Joo Hyung. Yeo Jin Goo....

I like the cast so far. I don't mind yonghwa. He's decent and hey, he'll look really pretty in the period costumes.

Why Yonghwa?? Please cast Lee Hongki if it has to be an idol with hallyu power.

Yonghwa and Hongki are different. What Yonghwa can do in Korea, Hongki cannot. He doesn't get offers like Yonghwa deos.

Honestly, i wouldn't cast hongki for his halluyu power because yonghwa has that too...but it's also ridiculous to say yonghwa can do better in korea...Did you see the miserable korean ratings for his last drama failure Mirae's choice, which was on a major korean network? And is acting is just so-so.

Mirae's choice is a fail drama.majorly because of the script and directing and not the acting
Yonghwa even though his acting is just decent and far from good but he has improved from the previous wood stiff acting
netizens are complementing his improvements and from the comments they don't mind him to be in this drama

As far as I know, hongki recently did a drama as first lead so i don't think he'll be in another drama for at least half a year? He will be focusing on his music activities for now. Secondly, the team behind this know what they want...they think yh is a good for the role that's why considered him. Thirdly, hongki being a good actor does not mean he can play just any role...I don't think this role suits him

Heyyy!

Jung Yong Hwa's "improvement" from YOu're Beautiful to Mi-Rae's Choice was noticeable. Maybe if he did it again this time around (if he ends up taking it), then it wouldn't be so bad.

And yes, he will look pretty in the elaborate Sageuk costumes.

To be fair to Yonghwa, his acting did improve quite noticeably in Mirae's Choice, too bad the drama was so terrible though. But a sageuk?

I'm really hoping that this is the role that truly does it for Yonghwa (if he takes it). He's got so much charm but he has yet to be in a role that made any use of it. Gong Yoo, So Ji Sug, and Cha Seung Won are actors who really know how to use their natural charm in their roles. Hopefully Yonghwa gets to be more playful and animated than he's been in previous roles. Hopefully he'll get some ladies to romance too.

he tends to play really passive and quiet characters which are probably the most difficult type to portray for inexperienced actors because it requires a degree of nuance. I agree about his charm, he is naturally charismatic as a performer but he has yet to tap into that as an actor.

he's not Yunho level of offensive, but I'm still not sure Yonghwa "improved" much in Mirae's choice or everyone else had terrible characters and barely tried so he didn't seem so bad in comparison. I can't see him in a sageuk though.

in the early eps when things still looked promising, he was pretty decent so it really isn't just an in comparison thing. I never felt like Mirae's Choice got criticised for bad acting, just bad scripting - LDG, YEH and HCA all put in good enough performances.

I'll be okay with Yong-hwa. Alas, i am that shallow. And he wasn't that bad in Mirae's Choice....as idol acting goes. But yeah, Rim-oppa would've been so good.

Honestly my main issue, beside Yonghwa, is only one episode per week. I barely survive 2 eps/week and now TvN wants to make it the new format?!

Yonghwa is improved in Mirae's Choice but we don't know how he will fare in sageuk.

So Jung Yong-hwa is D'Artagnan, which makes him the hanger-on to the Three Musketeers. But there will only be two older musketeers, not three?

I'm still excited about Milady and Richelieu though.

Yong Hwa in Sageuk ?
Can he do the sageuk way of speech.
@Marry....yes....why not Oppa Rim.
What is this ? Why suddenly all idols...they jump into one drama to another drama? Looks like they try to preparing a nest before enlist. So, when they back...voila ...an acting field are open.
They just want the instan skills to honed their acting, without any time to adjust to new character.

If Yong Hwa is casted, rather than be negative, I want to be positive as everyone is still learning and improving. Even the best actors improve their craft to the next level. I am also looking forward to the change/variety in character roles too.

COME ON! Yong hwa will look dashing as a musketeer. Also, as part as an ensemble he does not have to be the best actor.

TVN going to one episode a week...it may be bad for us, okay, it is bad for us, but it might help ease the Live-Shoot dilemma that has been plaguing the Kdrama industry for longer then I have been watching. It could mean...fewer exhausted actors, fewer auto accidents, higher production values in the final episodes, and better writing for the final episodes.
