Yoon Eun-hye tempted by Temptation

The two female leads are still undecided for SBS’s Temptation, the Indecent Proposal-esque melodrama starring Kwon Sang-woo, but according to recent reports Yoon Eun-hye is the likely leading lady, while Lee Mi-yeon has decided to opt out. (Other reports hedge that she is just considering, but in any case Yoon Eun-hye appears to be leaning toward it.)

The role Yoon Eun-hye has been offered is of Kwon Sang-woo’s wife, while Lee Mi-yeon had been courted to play the chaebol woman who makes our smart but poor hero an offer he can’t refuse, by which we mean a huge amount of money. The three characters are thrown into conflict but over the course of the drama come to discover the meaning of real love.

I can’t say that this plot description appeals to me very much, but I do like the actors and keep hoping for Yoon Eun-hye to score her hit instead of turning in disappointment after disappointment. It’s not necessarily her fault because you can see her putting in the work in all her roles, no matter the situation, and she still gives it her all. (See: I Miss You, Mi-rae’s Choice, Lie to Me.) It’s just that she has had a terrible streak of underperforming dramas and you wonder if she needs to change something about her decision-making process at this point. For her sake, I hope she finds that role that matches her warmth and charisma with actual sensical scriptwriting. Okay, for our sakes too.

Writing is Han Ji-hoon of Time of Dog and Wolf and Dr. Jin, while we’ve got PD Park Young-soo of Oh My Lady and My Daughter, Flower in the director’s chair. Temptation will follow Doctor Stranger as SBS’s next Monday-Tuesday drama beginning in July.

Not a popular opinion here, I know, but I didn't think "Lie To Me" was so bad. It was cute and entertaining. Sure, it wasn't high art and it had kind of a non-ending, but it was enjoyable. Not to mention YEH's incredible chemistry with Kang Ji-Hwan.

That being said, I'd love to see her in a really great drama that's a good match for her acting chops.

This is so sad. The writer of Dr. Jin & Road No. 1 - neither of which had strong writing from what I gather - was also the writer of Time Between Dog and Wolf, one of my favorite Korean dramas. How can that be? How could he have produced one of the more compelling ones and a slew of terrible ones?

Sorry I'm in the nay camp here. I didn't even finish Lie to Me - I gave up after about 4 episodes because I couldn't stand YEH's character, so unfortunately I didn't get to see the sizzling chemistry between YEH and kang Ji Hwan.

That said, maybe this will be the hit she needs.

YEH's acting is not that great, to be honest. Like everyone else, I thought she was the next big thing in Coffee Prince, but then she turned into the one hit wonder (which happens sometimes when people expect too much of you and you buckle under the pressure and lose perspective) Her acting in Lie To Me had its ups and downs. She was terrible at portraying a drunk in the first (or second) episode. Usually, you can get an idea of an actress's capability by watching typical scenes like the drunk scene. She totally missed it. I actually enjoyed Mirae's Choice a lot, I thought the screenplay was very unique and thoughtful, even if the ending is kind of mild and bland compared to the interesting plot. I also loved the supporting characters, the older brother and the older Mirae. YEH's acting Mirae's Choice was better than in Lie To Me.

Please - romcoms, even the good ones, aren't "high art" - but LTM was among the worst (esp. the script/dialogue).

When picking a project, YEH needs to focus on a good writer/script (and everything else should fall into place).

That's why "Coffee Prince" is still the high mark of her acting career.

Same here. Every time I read Lie To me shoved with other very disappointing dramas, I pause and wonder...
It's actually one of my most favorite dramas, really.
The two main leads had great chemistry together and the female lead was one that you don't need to hate...
I don't understand what went wrong with other viewers... (not wrong with the viewers but which part others did not like)

I honestly don't want her to be in a melodrama again, I would rather she pick a rom-com. That's where I think she's best at and shines more.

It is true that this actress is sometimes called Queen of Rom Com. I am guessing from all the comments I read in the past that this moniker must come from her work in Goong (and possibly Coffee Prince).

But, both dramas happened years ago, which, in a dramaland, could mean eons ago.

Viewers' taste evolves. Industry standards shift. Even what constitutes "comic" changes. If I am reading the tea leaves right, today's viewers seem more comfortable with rom com actresses that we had in Prime Minister Is Dating or Single & Sly Again, rather than the one in Mirae's Choice. (Sorry, I try but just can't get Korean names roll off my tongue.) And I notice that our Witch is opening yet another front in this genre.

"Goong" really wasn't that good and YEH's character in CP really didn't provide the humor (unless it was physical).

Have to say, as much as I love YEH, can't really regard her as a comedic actress.

Actually, her best comedic acting may have been in her 1st role which was a pretty crappy film.

Mirae's Choice was actually a decent drama. To be fair, YEH's a hit or miss actress. Sometimes she gets it right, sometimes she is a pretty average actress. Stop blaming her projects, she is responsible, too. If you can look past her looks and charm, you'll realize that she's not that great of an actress. Yes, she's def. one of the prettiest actresses, but not the best at acting.

As much as I love YEH, I agree that she can be hit or miss. I am not sure why--perhaps she needs to stay within a certain character type.

She was absolutely abysmal in Take Care of the Young Lady, particularly in the early episodes. She got a little better later on but I still felt she was miscast in that role.

She totally smashed it in Coffee Prince but unfortunately that was the best she's ever been to me.

I did not hate LTM all that much. It was just very meh. Vineyard Man was meh too.

I thought she was solid in the episodes I watched of I Miss You. But I couldn't finish it b/c it's almost impossible for me to get through a melodrama--even for one of my favs.

The plot of this drama doesn't appeal to me in any way but, and I hate to say it because I really like YEH, she's becoming a barometer of whether or not I should watch a drama.

Surprisingly, I think I actually watch all of her dramas and you're right she's incredible only in Goong and Coffee Prince. She's so adorable in Goong that I totally love her. And she's entertaining in Coffee Prince. But after that she's lucky that she'll probably have the love from Goong and CP for the rest of her life. Nevertheless, I think she needs to get a new love from a new hit.

It's been a long time since she has had a hit drama! I think she should go back to rom-coms too. For some actors/actresses, rom-coms are a better fit: thinking of Kim Tae Hee, Song Seung Hoon as well.

KTH has very good comedic timing, but let's not forget that some of her best moments in "My Princess" were the emotional scenes (much better crying/emotional scenes than many other better regarded actresses); as for Song Seung-hun - he had it easier in MP w/ no real emotional scene for him to try and emote.

While romcoms should have the "rom" and "com" - let's not forget that they also tend to have darker, more emotional moments.

Some of YEH's best moments in CP was when Eun-chan was going thru difficult times.

When I saw that the writing is Han Ji Hoon, it reminded me of Lee Bo Young's bastard husband in Gods Gift.

Exactly what I have been wondering about? Do actors really have any idea how a story would turn out? Is it mostly luck and hoping for the best? But then we have someone like Gong Hyo Jin who's had success after success after success. What is her secret?

Required fields are marked *

Gong Hyo Jin's success is a combination of good luck and good thinking. I like almost any drama Gong is in, because she is an excellent, masterful actress. She puts a lot of thought into her roles, she is an independent thinker who is not afraid to go against the grain. YEH, however, is not as strong-minded. She cares too much about what people think, and doesn't have a clear sense of her own tastes and strengths and where she should go as an actress. Gong is the better actress. YEH is more of an artist at heart than actress or singer. What she is most passionate about, and has the clearest vision about is art. You can tell by the drama she's chosen in the past that she doesn't really care or know that much about what makes a drama good. Gong probably spends a lot of time studying the scripts, so her projects are better chosen. I don't think I can compare Gong and YEH, because they approach acting from completely different places and frames of mind.

Many of your posts on this article are a lot of conjecture on your part it seems. It is of course your prerogative to prefer GHJ to YEH as an actress (others share that sentiment and I happen to like both in equal measure). However i take pause at your repeated tendency to make assumptions and state opinions as facts. I don't not see any basis for your claims on how and why GHJ and YEH make their decisions on what projects to act in or where their respective passions lie. While I understand everyone has their opinions and is free to voice them it is always a bit frustrating to see people repeatedly state incredibly subjective opinions as facts (such as whether or not someone is a good actress) rather than acknowledging that they are in fact opinions, just as it is also frustrating to see people make assumptions without any basis (such as whether one's passions lie in acting or elsewhere).

I think you can tell my comments are my own opinions and theories, just as most comments here are, aren't they? (Are you on the staff for Dramabeans, by any chance?) I think perhaps you're just not used to people having strong opinions. Any way, I didn't pull my ideas out of thin air, if that's what you're trying to say. I read interviews, I analyze the news, I watch the dramas, and guess what- after a while you start to get a sense of things! Am I lying to say that YEH's first passion was art, and it probably killed her to not be able to study it in college because of her career? As to Gong's method of choosing successful projects, what else could it be aside from good choice of screenplay and a bit of luck? I don't think it's even a debate at this point that Gong has more acting chops than YEH, unless you want to argue about that, too? It's a technical thing, and not just my own preferences.

0

AAAA to each his own but I can assure you I am used to strong opinions, I couldn't survive in my profession if I were not, however, I am used to people at least acknowledging the difference between their own opinion and facts, which is not always the case with people commenting here. Does YEH have a passion for art? based on her interviews and actions, I think the answer is likely that she does. Does YEH have a passion for acting? Based on her interviews and actions I think the answer is also likely that she does. You said in another post "some fans can't see past appearance, and they stubbornly cling on to an actress like YEH even when the girl herself isn't really into acting anymore" I would love to know where that came from. The girl has enough money now to last a lifetime so I venture to guess she wouldn't keep acting if she didn't have a passion for it which (despite your insistence to the contrary ) she has stated on numerous occasions. And what exactly are fans clinging to? YEH wants to act, she has countless fans that want to see her act so to be honest I just don't know what youre getting at but none of this is worth belaboring. I guess at the end of the day I think being able to see ones own biases and subjectivity in ones statements is an important part of critical analysis and a part that unfortunately many people miss.

0

Think it's more GHJ having a better sense of who the better writers are and largely sticking to them.

YEH is too loyal to people (even if that means to her detriment, but at the same time, that's why people love her) - as in sticking to projects based on her loyalty to the PD even when things aren't going well.

I think for those who are hoping YEH can find another hit drama, here is one suggestion: let's look back at Coffee Prince and what made it so good? 1) good novel and good screenwriter 2) good female director Therefore the secret to another successful project for YEH would be to find 1) a solid screenplay 2) a female director. Why a female director? Because I believe YEH is one of those actresses that perform better with a female director. Male directors see her mostly as eye candy, while a female director will bring out both her pretty looks and personality. That's my theory. Women know women best.

Pretty much what I have said.

Male directors tend to have her do that fake cutesy stuff which is well, fake and not really cute since that's not YEH's thing (she's naturally cute based on her long ago variety appearances).

But the most impt. thing is finding a good script/writer.

YEH used to be one of my K-actress crushes... Goong, despite many people's opinions on how overrated it was, is one of my favorite Korean dramas of all time! Her chemistry with JJH was fantastic!
But surprisingly it disappointed that she was kinda starting to push me to let herself out of my girl crush list with her performance in Lie To Me. GAJ, in my opinion, was no doubt a bad written character that I couldn't even find her funny at all. She is just simply stupid, I couldn't even connect to her at all. What's worse was even YEH who had seemingly had experiences of such roles before was not able to pull it off. And I'm on the opposite of those saying her and KJH's chemistry was the best. I strangely thought that they forced it too much. Moreover, I also checked out some episodes of I Miss You and I had to stop halfway because the story didn't do justice to her acting. Sigh... After that, I am less excited to hear any news about her projects, and reading the plot of this upcoming project of hers doesn't change it.

Never stop to cross my fingers for her, though.

Oh dramaGod, please give this girl the right way to choose at least fine project! I really want her in a good project.

(suddenly remember her almost project with the late Park Yong-Ha and randomly remember how I miss him) Sorry If I sound rude to randomly mention him. Just miss him too much it hurts ;((

Really thoughtful comment here. Refreshing to see someone who is clear-headed enough to see clearly! Some fans can't see past appearance, and they stubbornly cling on to an actress like YEH even when the girl herself isn't really into acting anymore. She's always been more interested in art, so let her make art, do what she's best at. Yes, I also wonder if that project with Park would have been the second hit drama for YEH, but I guess we'll never know. It sounded quite promising. Reminds me of how Kang Ji Hwan missed the lead role in Faith, makes me feel the same kind of creative regret and loss at what could have been. I thought there was not enough story, and too much fore-play (ie, kisses) in Lie To Me. Kind of grossed me out, and made me glad I'm not an actress, and I don't have to kiss a stranger like that for work. It's really just glorified prostitution. Oops, sounds like the feminist in me just got out!

I would think you would agree since all (or many) of your post on this article seem to be replies to other comments as well. You said above that this is not a fan site so people should be prepared for very direct and straightforward comments but shouldn't it cut both ways? Don't people that have differing views from yours have a right to respond and voice their opinions as well then? I'm all for straightforward comments but I think if you put a comment out there , people have a right to post counter views and that's all I was doing. My opinion, lie to me had many, many flaws but the one thing it got right is the smaller moments of interest and passion between the leads. Others may of course disagree but my main response was simply that unless you are going to claim all acting relating to intimacy as "prostitution" I don't see how you can put that onus on lie to me more so than any other drama.

That's also my wish....

I think YEH needs to chill and just BE.

She's 30 this year I believe and it's time to choose dramas that she likes and not what her fans want...

I think the problem might be related to the scrutiny that idols are subjected to and the over analysis of that whole "image" thing.

Even though she's no longer an idol, there may be some remnants of that "what will my fans think" frame of thinking in her choice of projects.

That will be really sad if that's the way she approaches her projects...

I'm not sure if I should venture into the following thoughts, but I hope they are not perceived in a wrong way...or in a preaching way.

It's funny how YEH is known to be a devoted christian, and although I don't know her personally, she gives off this insecure vibe in her interviews which is sort of puzzling.

Why?...because I believe that as a christian you should let the power of God carry you throughout your days and you should just fly and be full of confidence and trust that HE is taking care of you.

So YEH my girl, I love you and I wish for you to be mentally stronger and live your life according to your desires and not those of others.... and I wish for you to be happy and free because you seem to be a beautiful person inside as you are outside.

All you need to do is let yourself fly.

Are you the same sogazelle in Soompi? Then I believe that you are her fan. You have this kind of deep insight about how EunHye is that only an avid fan can know. I believe that you just want what you think is good for Eunhye~ but while Eunhye might think too much about what people thinks, you should know by now that she doesn't really care about what her 'fans' think~ because if she really thinks about her fans, she would have listened to her fans crying "Do not take this drama please" ... "Leave that drama please (in the middle of drama broadcast)" etc2~ I know for sure YEH knows about what her fans want during a certain drama but did she listen? No!! You should know that by now. I am following different actresses and I can say that she is the kind of actress that doesn't really think about her fans. Sometimes it hurts me because she doesn't listen. Now you still think she thinks about how her fans think? If what you say is right that she thinks about what people thinks of her, that people isn't her fans. I don't know who. If you still think that she considers her fans in her project decision making, you better see korean and chinese sites yourself.

I know she is a religious girl eversince but it was only later 2012 somewhere around IMY that YEH has become very very expressive with her religion~ It was only later 2012 till now that her religion is at peak, IMO. Why? Because I believe there was one point she realized that she was weak and that she needed to have strength through her God. Maybe there was one point she realized how she's living a hard life and that made her seek God. You said it's funny how she is a devoted Christian yet she gives off an insecure vibe? Can insecure people not become a devoted Christian? Devoted Christians are not perfect. We seek God because we believe we are sinners and by the help of God we slowly leave our sins and try to become like Jesus. Don't you think YEH is into God because she needs the power and love of God to help her overcome her insecurity?

Anyway, the bottom line of my post was that I wish for her to be free and happy and I'm entitled to my opinion, as much as you're entitled to interpret it anyway that you like.

YEH, if you let the fear of what people will think or say dictate your life, you will live with a lot of regrets. If they don’t like you, they will always find something to criticize no matter how petty it is. But for those who love and respect you, even the simplest things you do make them really happy. I really don't know why some peole get stuck with their opinion and keep repeating it over and over again. Were all the rave reviews about I Miss You by Korean drama critics and bloggers misleading then? I even recount the first review of JB about the drama...she concedes that the plot is solid but it's wy too heavy and angsty for her taste. Does the heaviness of the drama theme make it a poor dram then? The line of reasoning is faulty and biased to say the least. I watched Missing You several times and from a literary critique perspective, it is not to be placed on the same category as other dramas who failed miserably in terms of scriptwriting. YEHh proved her melodramatic prowess in that drama.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that an ICONIC ROLE is on the way for YEH.

Even though I admit most of all her projects after Coffee Prince missed a hit but I guess I'm in a minority who think that I Miss You is a success drama..I dunno maybe I'm a type of heavy drama and she's good portraying as Lee Soo Yeon and also had a great chemistry with the lead..

But then that Dr.Jin's writer left me a big trauma to watch this but I like Time Between Dog and Wolf though..

I don't think you're in the minority at all. It's just that at Dramabeans, many of the commenters disliked "I Miss You", there have been other sites I have visited where many people raved about the drama and loved it.

I personally loved the drama - it had my favorite actors in it. YEH, YSH, KSH and YJG. There was a whole lot of crying in that drama that I felt could have been edited out, but the storyline was engaging and the premise was solid. Not one of my ultimate favorite dramas but a really good and solid production. I am one of its fans too. I thought YEH carried her weight in the drama and her acting was spot on.

I have to admit it was PYC who brought me to watch IMY in the 1st place though I doubt his acting a bit coz it's melodrama genre but wow he proved that he can act melo + it is worth watching and all cast did a great job including Oh Jung Se and Song Ok Sook..Who can forget the "bromance" scenes and cheezy "aien" moments
And IMY actually has became one of my fave melodramas together with Secret..

But sorry YEH's fans, looks like she declined this role..I actually want to see her in action drama for her next role..Like a sweet badass Bo Won's character in 3 Days^^

OMG I know this may seem selfish, but I want her to take this role for one reason only other than wanting to see her in a drama again. I NEED her to guest in Running Man!!!!! It's an SBS drama and she said that, if she has something to promote then she doesn't mind going haha

Just add in Son Ye in and at least you've got yourself a strong female lead who you know will somehow deliver even with a poor script!

How I've been waiting for her and Kwon Sang Woo to finally act together!

LOL why is it when an article is written about YEH, the comments sound like the are coming from YEH expert and YEH analyst hahaha..
I'm always her fan since forever. Whatever she decided, whichever path she chose is not for me to judge. I think YEH knows what she's doing and all the consequences without fans shouting what's good or bad for her. We actually don't know her situation for real, there's tonnes of things happening behind the surface. What we see is just a very part of the process. So as a fans I will just wait for her decision.
As a fans, I need regular dose of YEH so for me every project of her is worth checking.

YEH may have "poor choices" of dramas after coffee prince but I still think that they are not that bad either. it did well in korea in terms of ratings ( may not be as high as coffee prince) but definitely not the worst. Even the likes of choi ji woo and ha ji won experienced lows in terms of ratings in their dramas before. Yoon eun hye only had 7 dramas in her entire career as an actress ,and 2 movies ( if im not mistaken) while other A list actresses had more and had more misses than hers. I believe the vineyard man even won awards, my fair lady did ok in terms of ratings, I miss you did well especially overseas, and not to mention all her dramas were shown here in the Philippines and other countries. mirae's choice will be aired soon also . I think that YEH only wanted to improve her craft by doing other genre since she's not that young anymore to do rom coms .i don't think ratings is her main goal in choosing her next project. she maybe wanting to broaden her horizon as an actress, she's looking long term and she's not afraid to take risks. there are a lot of rom coms that was offered to her which maybe a sure hit but she turned them down like personal taste and the greatest love. Maybe a lot of people who are following her career is just disappointed cause her previous dramas did not fared well COMPARED to coffee prince which is now considered a classic Korean drama by many. Not to mention that she's one of the highest paid actresses in kdrama land so its given that its difficult to pair her again with another A list actor . i think that she should take on this drama if this will feature choi ji woo and kwon sang woo .this will be the first time that she will be working with high caliber actor and actress as her co lead in a drama, so its a good risk to take. whatever the outcome of this drama will do good for her experience and acting skills . what excites me the most is that there will be a slight chance that she will be guesting in running man since this is an sbs drama and she mentioned before that she might appear in running man if she has a drama to promote . looking forward to see jongkook with yoon hye again.
