Rain considers new SBS drama Song For You

It’s just an early offer, but Rain is reportedly considering the new SBS drama Song For You, the latest project from the PD-writer team behind Dr. Champ and Scent of a Woman. I guess that means his other possible drama project Indian Summer fizzled out in development, because it’s been months since we heard anything about that.

The setup sounds like your standard-issue showbiz drama about singers and star agencies, and is about a heroine who wants to become a singer, and the agency president who helps make her a star. So, basically Trot Lovers with the second lead as the hero, or You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin? I do wish the premise didn’t sound so overdone, but given the PD and writer, the execution ought to be better than most.

The agency president is a Daddy Long Legs type who’s also a geeeenius songwriter and Midas-touch producer. He discovers young talent including the heroine, and helps them rise to stardom. He carries some trauma from the tragic death of his girlfriend, which he witnessed firsthand and still has stress attacks about.

The drama is described as a story about K-pop and youth chasing their dreams, and given the hit songwriter producer character, it just makes me think that Rain is going to be playing JYP. That… would be funny, but weird. Or weirdly perfect?

Song For You is tentatively planned to follow It’s Okay, It’s Love in September.

Overdone indeed. Rain is a hit or miss for me but such a premise... Is underwhelming. Then comes the question of the wanabe star -who-better-know-how-to-sing: I bet the usual names will land on our screens.

Totally agreed with Rain being a "hit or miss"!
I thought he was horrible in "Full house" but found him really entertaining in "Fugitive Plan B" and then again horrible in "Ninja Assassin".

Yeah, he was meh in Full House, but he was awesome as Sang Doo.

I absolutely agree! Those two performances seem like they were from two different actors. Full House was pretty bad and I'd like to blame it all on the writing cause Rain was heartbreakingly good in Sang Doo, Let's Go To School. I'm glad that was this first role I saw him play and even before knowing he was a singer cause, no matter if he has some bad roles after, I think he's really talented. I'll give this drama a chance - always happy to watch Rain act again. :)

He's a good actor so I have no real reservations about him in this project, but the premise sounds done to death. Hope they find a good leading lady too.

Good point. But there is something else that is in play here.

Tom Cruise is a good actor, with a number of global blockbusters under his belt. But Rain today seems as appetizing or fresh as Tom Cruise was right after his now-infamous appearance in Oprah.

The reality is that there are so many old and new faces to easily fill in for Rain or even do one better. So the question is not if Rain can do it but why does it have to be Rain whose off-screen life was so tarnished over and over?

Well, you could have asked the same about Jang Hyuk (draft dodging) ....... and look where he is now.

The reality is that Korean entertainment is far too hung up on offscreen image for its own good. Producers and PDs need to stop treating talent like it's their bottom priority when casting, long after looks and image/idol status. And given that Rain can actually act very well aside from that (even if talent is not what the pd looks for here), I would not mind at all if he took a new acting project.

It was for Chinese photoshooting (MCM frloral collection), definitely not his choice for everyday wearing. And it's more expensive than your whole wordrobe

I've always liked Rain so seeing him in a new drama would be nice but this doesn't sound that promising , unless it turns out to be a very good comedy and that never happens , or it does something new and show the dark side of showbiz that dramas barely touch but this Obviously won't .

Rain is going to be playing JYP. That… would be funny, but weird. Or weirdly perfect?

Make it the other way round - JYP playing Rain. It would be a riot, wouldn't it?

I like Rain as an actor waaaaay better than as a singer, but really, we've had too much people dreaming of singing mediocre songs, being under public scrutiny and advertising outdoor equipment recently. I would be delighted to see Rain in a drama that has nothing to do with entertainment.

Oh man! I was looking forward to Indian Summer even if I only wanted to comment on it when it was official. They didn't even give me a chance! Rain hasn't had an acting comeback in Korea since his discharge so I reeeealy hope he picks something that has a good chance of succeeding.

The story sounds too generic, but the time slot is the best since it's been leading for over a year now. Rain has always had A-list actresses as leading ladies, so if he's picking this up, I'm expecting a big name. I'm really hoping he pairs up with HJW at some point since they're both so charismatic and charming.

I'm still expecting Indian Summer to materialize for him. Maybe he's just looking for a perfect comeback. I dunno if this one is it, but whatever he picks, I'm obviously in.

I think he's run out of A-list actresses to work with. If they haven't co-starred in his dramas then they've been in his MVs. I can't think of one he hasn't worked with. If he could score Park Bo Young his streak would continue but I don't think she'll do a drama, especially this one. With the age gap fever these dramas have had lately, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to get Suzy to be his costar.

LOL true. I myself can't think of one he hasn't worked with at some point.

PBY would be nothing short of fantastic, and she may just do it if Rain accepts. Just maybe. But the thought of Suzy being cast in his drama comeback is scarier than the scariest movie out there. If it needs to be a younger actress then PSH or Uee would be an awesome choice. I can see them both having bucket loads of chemistry with Rain. I don't think he would agree to work with a horrible idol actress. At least I'm hoping that's the case.

Since it's the year of reunion, my personal preference would be Song Hye Kyo as his leading lady. But I'm afraid it will be idol.
The story does sound similar to Trot Lovers and YTBLSS, but I'm excited to see Rain's drama comeback.

This one calls definitely for a Rain-SHK reunion! Although I can't imagine she'd pick a role like that, plus she may not fit the age range they're looking for. It would be the reunion of the year if it were to happen though; I can't imagine the madness to ensue from all the Full House fans.

But how likely are they to work together being exes and all? Or maybe I'm living in the 19th century...

Trot lovers. Ji Hyunwoo basically becomes a struggling musician after his scandal in order to put out music again, he has to help make eunji a star. Then through his journey with eunji, he will change for the better from his former asshole self.

I'd say yes to Rain any day. I admit a more inspired premise would be preferable, but, if done well, I'm a sucker for these make-me-a-star stories. I remember I always wished You're the Best, Lee Soon-shin focused more on that. So I'm optimistic. It depends on the leading lady!

For the leading lady ...

How about Go Ara? She's good with comedy and sings pretty well. Love her 'Start' for Reply 1994 ost.

Or ... Lee Yu-bi~~ she can sing and act well.

I have to admit I'm not sure I care what the plot is if it puts Rain on my screen twice a week for two months. Preferably shirtless, which would eliminate any worries about Jackets.

I really want to be excited for this because it's been AGES since the last time oppa does drama, and i will pray that it turns out great. But seriously, can it not be Trot Lovers all over again? (I do enjoy Trot Lovers though, just don't feel like watching another drama with that premise.)

Rain playing JYP sounds amazing. They should ditch all the other stuff and just go with that. Rain is a great actor, especially in quirky/weird projects, so I'll probably watch it whatever happens.

So psyched for this if he signs on! He does rom-coms so much better than anything else. Hope he confirms soon and hope they cast the female lead well. But who?! Surely not IU or Eunji because, hello, they've already played female leads Who were exactly the same as the character described here. Ha. Whoooo?? Anyways, this is great news!

You mentioned You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin and I agree that it sound quite familiar. Hope at least he isn't as useless as the main lead in You’re the Best, Lee Soon-shin in regards of his job, or they just stopped making it sound like he's good if that isn't the case.

To be honest I am not excited about this premise. If handled right it could be really good; however, most likely that is not how it will end up. Although I like Rain and would hope he wouldn't accept the role if that was the case and earlier works of PD gives hope. Then again that picture isn't very assuring.

I'm just excited to see him on screen, but it'd be nice if it's good.

I've been watching Trot Lovers & thinking that Rain would have been a better fit for Ji Hyun-Woo's role. I like JHW & all but I just cannot stop comparing him to Kim Boong-Do. He's ruined me from all his other dramas b/c he was just so great in QIHM. I don't absolutely love him as Jooh-Hyun although I'm liking Jung Eun Ji as Chun-Hee in it. So confusing . . .
