Yoon-ah as Nodame?

So the big news today is that Girls Generation’s Yoon-ah has been offered the lead role in the Nodame Cantabile remake. Inasmuch as this is a highly anticipated adaptation of a beloved Japanese series whose heroine was pretty much universally loved (Ueno Juri), already there’s a flurry of mixed reactions to the news.

Currently Yoon-ah’s casting isn’t final, and articles range from saying that she’s only a possibility to that she’s nearly a lock. I’d take it with a grain of salt—announcing the news this way smacks of the producers putting out feelers before committing—but it does also seem to be serious enough that I wouldn’t be surprised if they went with Yoon-ah after all. KBS likes her, she’s got a large fan base, she’s headlined dramas before, and she has export potential. So I see what they’re thinking in going for someone as mainstream as her.

On the other hand, I find it disappointing since producers were first courting Shim Eun-kyung (Miss Granny, Sunny) for the role and she would have been fantastic, particularly since Nodame is a character with a lot of interesting quirks and dimension, and Shim Eun-kyung is a wonderful actor with spot-on comic timing. The fact that she was the first choice was encouraging, and gave me faith that the show was taking this casting seriously.

So when you put them next to each other as actresses, Yoon-ah kind of pales in comparison; she has improved over the years and I have no problem with her taking on shows that I don’t have a lot of attachment to (say, as with Prime Minister and I, which was cute). But I just can’t bring myself to be any sort of excited about her in this drama. Nodame is a bumbling slob whose piano skills are more savant than skilled, while Yoon-ah’s exactly the kind of approachably pretty girl who would ruin Nodame’s quirks for me, because she would be rom-com-weird, not actually weird. Her version of off-the-wall would be to do everything cutely and prettily, when what I appreciate about Nodame is that sometimes she’s just plain bizarre.

According to a KBS producer, while Yoon-ah is currently considering favorably and is a likely candidate, they do require the approval of the writer of the original series, Ninomiya Tomoko. She has stated that she wants a Korean Nodame who is 100% in line with Ueno Juri’s portrayal, and she does have final veto rights. So there is that.

The Korean version of Nodame Cantabile is planning for an October premiere on KBS.

I'm not going to watch it, but just the fact that there will be this adaptation next to my favourite j-dorama of all time urks me to no end. I do hope I am proven wrong, but I'm not holding my breath for that.

Also, on a technical note, I've been having lots of problems posting comments using Firefox (I keep being asked to enter a captcha, when I do it gives me an error page), but things are fine when I use Chrome. Is there any reason for that?

Same title as what the Korean remake is: Nodame Cantabile. You can also read the manga, although it's 136 chapters and I think on average about 30 pages long.

Dear javabeans, girlfriday, heads, gummi and anyone else who recaps on db. Please please do not recap this korean 'remake' of Nodame... I don't want to be visiting this site everyday and seeing this wreck (with Yoona, I mean).

I think that jb is most dissatisfied with Korean Nodame's casting and I hope that you have already made a decision of not wanting to recap this drama or even watching it.

I do not want my eyes to blare with Yoona's name to be tagged in anything related to Nodame. Although it already has.

If this casting follows through, I hope you guys make the smart decision of not tainting Nodame's reputation on db!

Sincerely me, and other beanies who hate the drama gods right now.

What does recapping have to do with reputation? They can recap what they want.

Honestly, I don't think just dramas we like should be recapped. Obviously, it's more enjoyable to recap something they like, and I have no problem if they recap something and then drop it when it gets unbearable, but whether to choose or not to start recapping something... should be Javabeans & co's choice to make. I'm not going to judge them for it at least.

Please pleeeeeease do not ruin Nodame Cantabile for me I had bronchitis when I marathoned the anime it was the only joy in my life for a week if Yoona plays Nodame even if they completely tear her image apart there is no way she could hit the level of biazarre relatability that the character has. Nodame's perfection is in being imperfect and the whole point of her relationship with Chiaki is their contrast THEY CAN'T PUT A PRETTY FLUFFY IDOL SINGER WITH LIMITED ACTING EXPERIENCE IN THE ROLE SHE'LL JUST CUTIFY IT AND DEPRIVE IT OF ALL SUBSTANCE I'M TOO EMOTIONALLY INVESTED IN THIS STORY TO BEAR ITS DESTRUCTION PLEASE

Would the Characters even be called Nodame and Chiaki? They'll probably be given Korean names, right? For anyone who is completely married (ie., virtually everyone who has weighed in the topic thus far) to the Japanese version of this drama, I doubt there's any way in hell a Korean version could approach the legendary status of Nodame. People are bound to be disappointed no matter who they cast, because Nodame is quintessentially Japanese, something the Koreans will never be.

If the remakers are slavishly dedicated to reproducing the steroid-juiced character quirkiness that the Japanese seem to pull off effortlessly, they might come close, but Koreans can't seem to make a non-Korean drama. The way I see it, Yoona and Joo Wan are the least of this project's problems.

Having said that, I plan on tuning in for a least the first couple of episodes to see Nodame being given a Korean treatment. Hope it'll be interesting.

Fated To Love You is a quintessentially Taiwanese drama that a lot of us thought "could never" work as a Korean drama, but they seem to be doing just fine adapting, so far anyway. It's about showing consideration for the fans of the original and injecting it with enough freshness and charm to stand in its own right, and for that you need to respect the source material since what you're going for is an officially sanctione, licensed RE-MAKE. If people wanted a purely Korean musical romcom, there's plenty of scope in the market to churn them out by the dozen, but that's not Nodame. Yoona isn't Nodame. Can you imagine Yoona twisting nonsensically side to side, whining "Milch-ieeeeee~~~~~~~~" in that utterly adorably completely obnoxious tone of hers? Maybe our expectations were too high, and a decent remake was impossible from the start, in which case Nodame will be nothing more than the cash cow of the year, Hollstein or not.

Fated to Love You was Taiwanese in the way it was executed (the degree of extremes), but it wasn't a genre/format that you don't see in Korea. Mangaesque, quirky, way out there dramas with lots of explicit sexual references, openly gay characters, no significant love triangle and a mess of a heroine that doesn't get prettified by the end... I have yet to see this in a k-drama.

Also, a lot of the people who weren't keen on a Korean remake for Fated to Love You because they had problems with the Taiwanese drama to begin with – the dragged-out melodrama, the doormat character, some of the actions of the male lead etc. These are things the Korean adaptation may be changing / may have changed. (I don't know, I'm not watching, because I couldn't stand the original and although the recaps for the remake suggest toning down/some changing, there still seem to be some clichés and a kind of humour that I personally don't care for. Others might of course, and I'm happy for them that it's working out so far. It's just not for me.)

That's just what I mean. You should only remake something you can match, or improve upon, that you feel you'll be able to re-tell well, especially if it's on the scale of something as beloved as Nodame. It feels like Group8 just want to jump on the Nodame bandwagon just for the lulz, or maybe they got the production rights on the cheap, since it's been years now since the manga ended. Who knows. I do know that whatever happens, I probably won't be able to keep myself from checking out the first episode anyway; I'm still hoping for a miracle, October's still ages away, it might not be a total nightmare.

Yoona really wants this role? If this is true, then I think she's being incredibly selfish. She is literally biting more than she can chew. I know I'm speaking in definite terms, and I know I'm not God to know the future, but there is no way, no how, that she can be Nodame. She can try to "act" like Nodame, I am going to give her that, but that's as far as it can go...acting "cute" "quirky" "weird" is do-able by her standards, but nobody can come close to Juri's oddball charming perfomance.

Why do you think other countries haven't dared to remake Nodame? Cause they know they can't ever match up to the Jdorama. Group8 and KBS is being greedy again, they've been trying to replicate their one-hit wonder in BoF for a few years now but no luck (see...playful kiss, To the Beautiful You, and the one with IU and JGS).

Yoona is someone who is too concerned with her image..she cannot let go, and will not let go, I am certain of that. At most, she'll just try to act cutesy and everything. Seriously! And if I was to pick from SNSD, Sooyoung might be even a better choice!

Is there such as a thing as "way too Japanese"? I think the problem with adapting Nodame is the fact that it's humor is so identifiable to certain a cultural humor and having an adaptation at par with the original will not happen. Why not just be inpired by it and not entirely adapt it?

She would be a better choice) but they keep shoving YoonA down everyone's throat ( who is not a bad actress, but needs expirience before taking such a complex role). How in the world do you go from SEK to YoonA?

I feel bad for Joo Won, this looks like a hot mess.

It seems they are casting people who are in one way or another related to music. In the first place, the original cast didn't play piano for real so i don't know why they are narrowing it down to those who have musical experience. Why not cast real actors? They'd play pretend anyway.

0

Required fields are marked *

Exactly. What they should actually be worried about is getting the characters down to a tee, the musical part will be much more believable if they have a cast that can carry the drama. YoonA's piano skills are very basic, if anything, her bandmade SeoHyun would be more fit for the role.

I think at this point they are just trying to get bankable stars so the drama can have international power, which is a horrible move. It's like they gave us after Shim Eun Kyung declined.

Oh, really? I dunno, most time when productions casts an idol, I'm guessing they do it for the ratings boost. I feel like that's what they are thinking but international sales is most definitely on their minds as well.

But, I did see the reactions from K-netizens and they seem as vehemently against it as anyone else, lmao...so...maybe it'll be back to the drawing board once again for Nodame.

Don't judge a book by its cover... Wait until you see yoona's acting in the drama and then judge. remember go ara's case. Netizens were so against her casting but after airing the first episode they totally ate their words. I think she will do a great job. I personally don't like nodame cantabile, i have seen the movie, the series, the anime and read the manga because there was all this fuss about it and i didn't find it extraordinary. I don't know why but i prefer k-dramas over j-dramas and I wish koreans would stop making remakes and make their own dramas cause their are better in my opinion. I want Yoona to star in a drama that will mark her as a true actress and i don't think this is the one. I think the producers saw sth in yoona and that is why they chose her ,similar to go ara's case, give them a little bit of credit. The bottom line is if it wasn't for yoona i wouldn't have watched the drama. Didn't like the original, i surely wouldn't have liked the remake. I think people wouldn't have watched the drama, in the first place, with yoona or not in it , just because it is a remake. What if they change yoona and the drama still fails what are they going to say then? no, the plot was stupid or the other actors didn't have enough chemistry. people will always judge behind their computer but when face real problems they turn into cowards. this is how it works, judge and you will be judged.

Required fields are marked *

There is a stark difference between Go Ara's situation and Yoona's. Go Ara is not part of one of South Korea's leading girl groups, Go Ara is not an idol that needs to maintain an impeccable image. Go Ara had to pull a Yoon Eun Hye in order to portray Na Jung correctly in Reply 1994. The last drama she had done before that was No Limit in 2009, she had 5 whole years of improvement. We have seen Yoona act in Prime Minister and I, and although she has shown improvement, it's not enough to portray someone like Nodame. She is too self-aware of her beauty and the presence of the cameras, she is not able to let go of her inhibitions and completely immerse herself in the role.

And this isn't about "judging" someone, it's critiquing them based on what they have shown on screen. A lot of people that love Yoona as an entertainer, myself included, are being very vocal about this casting choice. We aren't saying she could never do this, we are saying that she is not ready for a role as complex as Nodame's due to her inexperience. The role should go to someone who can do the character and the series justice.

Please follow your own advice and don't "judge" those people behind a computer. We aren't haters, we just don't have a predisposed bias.

No. She is a professional entertainer. This is a Kdrama site where we discuss performers, projects, and their points of success or failure. If this is a car site, what is to stop me from talking about the new Buicks coming out, and guessing what their performance will be like based on last years' Impala?
She is selling a product, we are giving our opinion about said product, and its possible success or failure. It is only fans who insist on imbuing this with emotion, "hate" for some such performer or attempting to ladle on guilt for presumably hurting someone's feelings.

Yes Yoona is beloved by many in Korea as well as internationally but it doesn't mean they'll love her as Nodame. I agree with everyone here that she is all wrong for Nodame and they're kinda testing the waters out there with a what if....

If Yoona does take this role, she should cut her hair, practice very hard acting like psychotic klutz, not aegyo-klutz and just be NODAME, not "Yoona-pretending-to-be-Nodame". And does she know how to play piano, even a little bit? She should also practice that even though most of the piano scenes will be with another pair of girl's hands.

AH!!! she must not act pretty!! Not to say that Nodame isn't pretty though because she is. But Nodame showed her charms through her crazy, out-of-the-world antics, not by being cute-crazy.

Actually, it's already been stated that she did approached them for the role, much like IU initially did when casting first begin. I think people are being protect because the Japanese drama was damn near perfect.

If Seohyun is a fan like the rest (more like a fangirl because she freaked when she met her during WGM with Yonghwa, lol), I'm don't think she will be ecstatic about the casting either. I love the girls, but everyone and their mom knows that Yoona is only an "okay" actress, she is nowhere near Ueno Juri's level.

Is this supposed to be some sort of bad joke? -_-

Mm.. Not sure if yoona is the right one for Nodame. Sigh.. Well, let's give her a chance. She did improve her acting. Not sure if she can be quirky tho.

came out of de-lurking mode to write this....

NOPE... DONE.
Not even going to touch this mess. NOPE.
sawrryy but not sawwrry. As much as I love actor joowon I don't love him enough to get my eyeballs scraped off with what yoona calls acting.

nodame is a hard character to pull off without making her be incredibly annoying.... yoona does NOT have the acting chops for this. maybe in a few years but DEF. not now.
*raging fist* SMMMMMMMM!! BACK THE HELL OFF!!!

Sorry, I won't watch if it is Yuna. She just can't fill in the shoes of the original actress!

Poor choices. If they cast the main pair from Goong (Ju Ji-hoon and Yoon Eun-hye) as Chiaki and Nodame, I may consider watching it (as they kind of look decent for the roles.)

I'm just going to say what the majority of us are thinking, WHAT THE F***!!! She is NO WHERE close to being on Ueno Juri's level, i'm sorry she's needs like 5 more years of acting roles to even be considered to play Nodame! If she gets the part, I'm not watching it. Another, fantastic japanese drama that kdrama will kill, destroy, and make me wanna die! Can you really act on part with Joo-won? PLEASE PLEASE pick some one else! Nodame is too precious of a character just to let anyone play her. Nothing against the girl, but I don't she can act honestly, her mannerism come off as force, and un-natural, just my opinion and its kinda of really hard to watch. I hope the author veto's!

I agree 100% with Javabeans. I started reading the manga as soon as I heard Joo-won was casted because I was thinking, "Okay this must be interesting." The manga is so different, in a good way. I love the quirkiness.

I was a shocked to hear that Yoon-ah was being considered to play Nodame. Not that I'm saying Yoon-ah is untalented, but rather unsuited for the role. I want Jennifer Lawrence acting. Jennifer Lawrence is not afraid of scenes where her face isn't perfect. Did you see Catching Fire? I don't want someone camera-ready or photogenic. I want someone real and out-of-the-box. If there was an American remake (hopefully not because it'd probably be terrible), Jennifer Lawrence or Jena Malone for sure for Nodame.

Korean remakes of Japanese dramas/manga are horrible. Then again, some Japanese live-action adaptations for most manga aren't that good either. Except Hana Kimi (and Nodame Cantabile once I watch it).

Kim Seul-gi, Gong Hyo-jin, Jung Eun-ji, and Shim Eun-kyung (and many more) are amazing actresses who should be considered and any of them would be good. What brings in the ratings (and what keeps them going up) are the actresses and actors who portray the character WELL and spot-on.

Dear KBS producers of NC,

In conclusion, please cast Jung Eun-ji or Kim Seul-gi since you already rejected Shim Eun-kyung who could have been your ticket to high ratings. Those two can as well, if you are wise and not greedy.
