Fated To Love You: Episode 16

Good intentions can be just as poisonous as bad ones, as our hero maybe kinda sorta hasn’t come to realize just yet. But for as much as they interact both directly and indirectly, Gun and Mi-young are like two ships passing in the night when it comes to revealing their true feelings—although I’d put most of that blame on Gun and his inability to sort through his own feelings first. What’s a heroine gotta do to get a little honesty around here?

EPISODE 16 RECAP

A charged moment passes as Gun leans in ever so slowly to kiss Mi-young… but the mood is broken when she slumps forward onto his shoulder, unconscious.

Gun keeps vigil at her bedside as he attempts to help with her fever, and in her fevered dreams, she murmurs Keddongie’s name. Gun, heartbroken, asks her why she’s still hurting like she is—if she stops, he can too.

Daniel’s calls to Mi-young’s phone go unanswered as Gun continues to change the cold rag on her forehead throughout the night. It’s much later when she finally comes to, and she seems surprised to find Gun asleep at her feet with his hands clasped around hers.

She tries to wake him up, and when that fails, she feels comfortable enough to switch to calling him the more familiar “Gunnie” instead of using his full name like she has been. Then she tentatively reaches out to hold his hand. Awwww. Wake up, Gun! Wake up and see this!

By the time he wakes up, Mi-young is gone—all she’s left is a note. Daniel confronts Mi-young as soon as she gets home with how worried he was when she didn’t come home last night, but is soothed when she claims she was temporarily ill and much better now.

He thinks she’s still not looking well and sets to babying her, which makes Mi-young think back to waking up to find Gun asleep, clasping her hand. “This should stop, this isn’t right,” she thinks to herself.

The next morning, Manager Tak finds Gun with his trademark under-eye circles and non-trademark painted tears. Gun then rips into Manager Tak about not taking care of their artists—of course he means Mi-young specifically, but covers it up by claiming that he means ALL of their artists, present and future.

In order for Manager Tak to make up for his terrible error, Gun orders him to find out the address of Mi-young’s studio. Manager Tak dances his way out of the office because he knows what’s going on, and he is all for the Snail Couple Reunion.

After an extra-long PPL break where Daniel buys Mi-young exercise sneakers, we find Gun outside Mi-young’s studio, loaded down with all kinds of herbal supplements and vitamins…

…But then he sees Daniel and Mi-young walking under the same umbrella into her studio, new sneakers on their feet. Needless to say, he is not happy.

Meanwhile, in Meta Makjang Parody Land, Mama Yong’s blood pressure spikes when Yong introduces Ji-yeon as his girlfriend. Since Mama Yong wants her son to marry a wealthy girl, she screams that she won’t ever accept their marriage.

Since Daniel and Se-ra are neighbors now, he happens upon a scene with her and her overbearing mother in the hallway, who coldly instructs her to stop teaching—she should either do ballet or marry Gun.

Se-ra warns her against talking to Gun, not knowing that her mother’s already done that, and sinks to the ground in tears when her mother storms off.

Haha, but it’s kind of funny when Se-ra turns away all dramatically as Daniel arrives, thinking he’s going to insist on comforting her… when really he just needs to get past her to open the door.

Since he’s not heartless, he decides to take Se-ra out for ice cream in order to make her feel better. When he offers her two flavors, she ends up picking his favorite. (We know why, but he doesn’t.)

He notes how nice of a daughter she is to understand her mother even when she’s so mean to her, before asking her if she still meets Gun. She says she does, but in no capacity greater than friendship—Gun will never come back to her, and she can’t go back to him.

Daniel seems very curious to know what’s holding them back, at least until Se-ra says that she can’t when she committed so many wrongs to “them.” He’s confused with her saying “them” and not “him,” but when he presses her, claiming it’s his business now because he proposes to Mi-young, she doesn’t elaborate.

Gun doesn’t hear Manager Tak and Yong conspiring to win Mi-young back for him (aww), but refuses to let them go to her to do business by using a bogus excuse that they can’t take “top secret” boxes of files out of the office. It’s his way of getting her to come to the office instead, and it works.

I love how Mi-young isn’t buying his act about the secrecy of the files, but sits down to work anyway. Then he brings in a rolling cart packed with vitamins and supplements, presenting it to her like a waiter at a restaurant. Hahaha.

She’s unimpressed and attempts to ignore him. That doesn’t go so well when Gun decides to sit in the room with her to watch her work, which eventually makes her uncomfortable enough to mention it to him. He pretends to acquiesce to leave, before feigning that his leg is too asleep for him to walk. HA.

But he eventually has no choice but to give up and leave her in peace when Mi-young doesn’t respond to any of his pitiful excuses to stay. Aw.

At Mom’s restaurant, the sisters and Soapsuds Duo argue the pros and cons of being Team Gun or Team Daniel. But if one thing’s clear, it’s that both President Park and Mr. Choi are jealous that Mom loves Gun enough to call him by name, when she doesn’t with either of them.

Mi-young leaves the office late that night, and finds that the lights keep turning on mysteriously everywhere she walks. It’s Gun’s doing, since he’s got his security team on it to make sure she gets home safely.

She doesn’t notice Gun standing in the window as the taxi he hired drives her away, and he waves after her.

Grandma Wang is all but jumping in excitement when she finds out from Manager Tak and Yong that Gun has been working late with Mi-young, even though they have to tell her to dial back her expectations—Gun and Mi-young agreed to part ways after the collaboration.

However, that doesn’t mean they still don’t have feelings for each other, and Manager Tak is happy to report that he’s 200% sure that Gun has feelings for Mi-young. It’s Mi-young’s feelings they aren’t so sure about.

Gun frets when Mi-young makes progress much faster than expected, because it means that her visits to the office will end after tonight. He tries to make excuses about how she must’ve sacrificed quality for speed in an effort to get her to stay longer, but Mi-young is sure of her work and isn’t worried.

Later that night, Mom worries when Gun doesn’t show up at his usual hour, since she knows he never misses a chance to eat no matter how busy he is.

Which means she has to hide her relief when Gun does enter, and he laughs about how Mom is just like other women when it comes to playing push and pull, since he knows she missed him. Aw. But tonight he can’t stay to eat, and asks for takeout instead, causing Mom to wonder whether he’s meeting Mi-young again.

Gun returns to the office with food to find Mi-young asleep on a bench. He can’t help himself from wanting to brush his fingers against her cheek when he sits next to her, and fights with all he’s got not to lean closer, and closer, and closer… (All the while he can’t stop thinking “Bare neck! Bare neck!” like a vampire.)

Mi-young wakes up to find Gun’s face hovering over hers, and she quickly jumps up before anything happens. They both decide to pass off the awkward situation and turn to the food, but it’s not long before Mi-young realizes it’s her Mom’s.

She’s upset that Gun didn’t listen to her when he asked her not to meet her mom anymore, and gets even more upset when he attempts to pass her words off in that trademark light manner of his. “You don’t think about the other person and just do what you want to do,” Mi-young accuses. “Did you even try to listen to the favor I asked you?”

Gun claims he tried to listen, but Mi-young disagrees, saying that he clearly didn’t try that hard when they’re sitting at a table of her mom’s food. He defends himself by saying that the first anchovy wrap (Mom’s specialty) he ever had was with Mom, and he hasn’t been able to get over the taste since.

“To you, she’s the very important mother you want to protect, but she also became a mother to me,” Gun argues. “What do you expect me to do now when you’re telling me that you’re taking my mother away? What do you want me to do?!”

Mi-young flashes back to warm memories of Gun and Mom, and finally relents in the argument. She doesn’t have the energy, and Gun is full of misplaced anger when it comes to her not eating the symbol of his sincerity toward her.

He resolves to eat it all himself then, but when Mi-young points out that he’s taking his anger out on the food, he explodes: “Drugs! There are drugs in this food!” HA. You guys are being ridiculous, I hope you know that right now.

Gun tries to solve the silence by playing a song on his phone, but it’s too reminiscent of the music they once danced to. While he continues to fiddle around awkwardly, Mi-young decides to text Young-ja, forcing Gun to covertly text back even though he’s standing right next to her.

He gets so flustered he accidentally calls Mi-young, and has to go running from the room in order to answer in a higher pitch as Young-ja. Hah. While telling Mi-young he/she’s too busy to talk, Manager Tak emerges from the bathroom—and before he can out Gun’s true identity, Gun hits him in the throat so he can’t. (Best part? Manager Tak thinks Gun’s finally lost it now that he’s talking like a woman.)

Gun returns to the office in time to overhear Mi-young telling Daniel (over the phone) that today will be her last day at Gun’s office and that she’d be happy if he could pick her up later.

He decides to address the Daniel subject jokingly in an effort to try and get Mi-young to open up on the subject, but all she says is that Daniel isn’t someone he can speak badly of, because he’s a good person she’s incredibly grateful to. Gun just plays it off that it must be nice for her to have someone like that by her side.

Se-ra ends up reading about Mi-young’s artistic involvement with Jangin Chemicals with a serious expression, as we find Daniel and Mi-young in her studio hanging some of her paintings. One of them is the silhouette of a man, filled in with heart-shaped lollipops. Aww, is that supposed to be Gun?

Meanwhile, Gun looks at the painting of Keddongie as he says, “Keddong-ah, I’m now totally prepared to send your mom away.” Noooo!

Gun happens to text Mi-young as Young-ja right when she’s at her most frustrated in regards to an artistic block. Like before, Gun appears in her studio as a manifestation of his voice in text.

He’s nothing but supportive, even as he notes that she seems very childlike (not in the bad way, in the “the world is full of wonders!” way). She admits that she does hear that she looks young for her age, but Gun/Young-ja tells her to forget about age for today so that they can talk more freely, since Young-ja is technically Mi-young’s unni and all that.

“Whenever I have these conversations with you, Ellie, it reminds me of my childhood when I used to run around with my friends. It reminds me of that friendship, as if I’ve gone back to being a young girl,” Gun says. Mi-young: “‘There lives a little girl in every woman’s heart.’ You mean that, right?” He says yes.

Gun: “There was a girl I used to know. That girl wore ugly glasses and thought that she was an ugly duckling. But in my eyes, she was so very beautiful. In her heart was the widest sea and the brightest star. She was a beautiful girl who cherished those qualities. Women want to change their outer appearances into something fancier than themselves, but actually… a woman is most lovable and beautiful when she’s a girl full of dreams.”

Mi-young feels inspired, and Gun gives her a good “Fighting!” to spur her on. Aww.

The next day, Gun’s face falls when Manager Tak tells him that Mi-young’s already completed her first project for the company, because it means she’s that much closer to having zero ties with him.

But he immediately perks up when Manager Tak tells him he invited Mi-young to the office, claiming that the CEO wanted to speak to her directly. “I did well, didn’t I?” Manager Tak beams. Gun couldn’t be happier, and they’re both jumping in excitement for Mi-young to come through the door…

…Only it’s Se-ra who enters instead. She wanted to have lunch with Gun, but is politely sent away when he claims to have a business meeting. As she’s leaving the lobby, though, she sees Mi-young.

Cut to: Another one of Se-ra’s coffee shop meetings with Mi-young. We know this isn’t going to end well. (Why does Mi-young keep agreeing to meet with her privately?!) Se-ra tells her how much learning of her collaboration with Gun’s company upset her, while Mi-young defends that she would’ve felt the same if she were Se-ra.

She also reassures Se-ra that their collaboration is nearing an end, and there isn’t any need for her to be concerned. “We only met for work. There aren’t any feelings between us.” Se-ra actually thanks her for understanding, like she’s actually got something going on with Gun. What the hell? I thought Se-ra took these three years to un-bitch herself, but clearly that didn’t happen.

Finally, at the meeting, Gun takes a look at the drawings Mi-young made. He’s clearly reluctant to admit that their work will be done once the advertising team takes a look at it, but Mi-young, perhaps spurred on by Se-ra’s “talk,” seems more ready to end things than he is. Even if she doesn’t look happy about it either.

There’s so much passing between them that they aren’t saying, with both of them looking like they’re in physical pain at the thought that this will be one of the last times they see each other. As they review the images with the team, they both think back to their text conversation from earlier: There lives a little girl in every woman’s heart.

Her work is a rousing success, but in the speech Gun gives to her and the whole team afterward, he seems half-hearted and sad as he thanks everyone—and Mi-young—for their hard work.

But Gun makes sure to catch up to Mi-young before she leaves: “It’s really over now. I’d like to treat you to dinner one last time.” Mi-young replies that she’d already planned a family dinner at Mom’s restaurant, since it’s also Mi-ja’s birthday, and Gun can’t catch himself before he refers to Mi-ja as his “sister-in-law.” Aww, sad.

He tries to make small talk about her family, anything to make her stay, but the tension is all but palpable. They both know what’s going on, and eventually Gun stops with the facade as Mi-young says she’ll be taking her leave and bows.

Resigned to fate, Gun bows in return as he calls her by her formal title (now “Artist Kim Mi-young”) and tells her how satisfied he was with her work. He means it. Mi-young looks on the verge of tears as she formally thanks him in return, before disappearing into the elevator.

He watches her through the glass until he can’t any longer. “This is really the end,” Mi-young thinks to herself. “Take care, Gun.”

At home, Gun tells Keddongie’s picture that he asked Mi-young out to dinner, only to be refused. Then he looks sadly at where France is on the globe and decides, “Let’s go. I can’t send your mother away, Keddong-ah. Our Keddongie should go with her instead of me.”

Mi-young calls Daniel to say that she’ll be late to her sister’s birthday party, since she forgot the presents at her studio. But Gun makes it there before she does with Keddongie’s painting in hand, ready to finally return it… only to see the painting of what can only be him: the silhouette of a man with heart-shaped lollipops.

He’s immediately flooded with flashbacks, but Mi-young’s presence snaps him out of it. She wants to know what he’s doing in her studio, but he can only stare at her as he holds the painting of Keddongie…

…And slowly, it all starts to dawn on her. “You were Young-ja?” she asks disbelievingly. He says nothing, but Mi-young is almost shaking: “Lee Gun, why are you doing this to me? Who the hell are you?”

Gun flashes back to the moment he had to himself after the loss of Keddongie, one we haven’t seen before, where he sobbed and sobbed and sobbed. Alone. Ooof. Wow, this tears open old wounds.

As the memories play back, so do the thoughts he had when he left the heart-shaped lollipop outside Mi-young’s hospital door: “If there’s a little happiness left in my life, I’ll give all of that to you. You have to be happy, Mi-young.”

In the present, Gun leans in close to Mi-young and nods. “Yes, Kim Mi-young. I’m your number one fan, Lee Young-ja.”

COMMENTS

Oh, Gun. You really did this one to yourself, didn’t you? It’s so easy to love and pity Gun, but sometimes I just don’t know what to do with him—and neither does Mi-young, apparently. What makes his situation especially difficult is that he is the source of the problems between them, and it’s due to his own confusion about what he actually wants that this kind of situation is happening at all.

To his credit, I’m sure Gun would really, really love to be able to let Mi-young go. Not to be rid of her, not because he doesn’t love her, but because he wants what’s best for her and always has. The problem is that Gun has never really had his finger on the pulse of what’s best for Mi-young and has been frequently and egregiously very, very wrong. It makes him both complicated and pitiable, because not once has he ever hurt Mi-young out of selfishness—it’s just that in all his effort to be selfless for her own good, he’s more or less failed.

It felt like a punch to the gut watching that flashback of him sobbing over Keddongie, since it brought to mind just how much suffering Gun has had to endure alone, even if it’s been of his own making. That almost makes it worse, doesn’t it? Especially considering that he couldn’t foresee any of this, or know just how much pain he was inflicting on both himself and Mi-young. But while Mi-young was able to escape for a few years to try and start anew, Gun was left behind with only himself and his memories. He never disconnected, even if he wanted to.

Unfortunately, Gun’s curse is that Mi-young interprets events exactly how he wanted her to, so that she still thinks he was done with her as well as Keddongie before that fateful event. Se-ra’s interventions have been annoyingly awful in their own right, but this episode’s talk is really the one that threw me. The show had led me to believe she’d actually matured too, considering that she admitted to Daniel that she’d hurt not just Gun, but also Mi-young. And now that her ties to Gun are tangential at best, she still feels like she has the authority to pull Mi-young aside and warn her away from a man she has no claim to? Girl better check herself.

If there’s anything these last few episodes have proven, it’s that neither Gun or Mi-young have been able to forget each other or move on despite their best efforts. Even if Mi-young can do so physically, even if she could just up and return to France right now, her paintings prove that her marriage with Gun is a part of her life she can’t or won’t erase. The fact that she held his hand for that brief moment, even while he was unconscious, went a long way in proving that her feelings for him, however repressed, are still very much real and alive.

But then again, her feelings were never the ones in question, were they? She admitted that she loved him, but Gun never returned the sentiment in words, even if we could see it in his actions. That’s what makes his case such a sad one, since we know he’s always been trying, we know the kind of pain he endured even when he was pushing away the best thing that ever happened to him… but unless he ever allows himself to be honest with Mi-young, she never will. Here’s hoping that this confession will be one of many, many more to come.

How do i survive waiting for next week with that cliffhanger?! This drama is doing such a good job tugging at my heart string. I haven't liked a drama this much since City Hall! With that cliffhanger, I'm trying to imagine what will MY say or do... she seemed pissed in that confrontation, but I'm hoping she won't yell at LG and shoo him out of her studio :( Or maybe MY's phone suddenly rings with Daniel calling *rolls eyes*, so nothing will end up being solved again :-/

I love all LG's scenes at his man cave, esp when talking to GD and referring himself as "Appa" and MY as "Omma". I feel that in his man cave, LG can truly be himself and you can really see the emotion in his eyes. Whereas, when he's out and about, meeting people and esp MY, he puts in a facade to convey that everything is OK. The flash back at the end showing him crying over GD's death and having to let MY go was just so sad and painful to watch. Such great acting by Jang Hyuk!

I understand that this slow-ish pacing to MY-LG relationship was bound to happen with all the 3 years long heartache that can't just be solved in 1 episode. BUT, it's getting reaaaally tough to be patient for the resolution to their conflicts, especially throwing in repetition of barrier such as Sera, causing even more misunderstanding, ugh. We have had enough of those! I hope at least LG and MY get to talk it out next episode!

And am I the only one who is not liking MY's hair with half pony tail like that? Come on, Jang Nara has gorgeous hair and that's the best they can do? I even like her hair in the airport scene (ep 12 ending) better. What's up with the hair stylist in this drama?!

2. The last 4 mins of this episode killed me. The look in Gunnie's eyes when he saw that painting.... GOD. Plus that flashback to his crying brought the "Feels" out of my eyes. Lol. I actually cried.

Look show, I LOVE you. LoVE you ok, but now it's time to smile and laugh ok.

I haven't minded it so much. I've liked how the show is exploring what we've come to call noble idiocy. They've shown how sometimes it is noble, and not done out of idiocy. But it does complicate things.

He worried that MY would stay with him out of duty. So the show has needed to establish her as someone who's independent and who has strong romantic options.

He was worried that he would become an overwhelming burden. So they need to establish her strength.

He was worried that she would be left with an empty life after he died. So they needed to show her as someone with talent, who could take agency over her own life and career.

He thought he could move forward with SR as a friend. But she's the same calculating, manipulative person she's always been. She'll sabotage any relationship he tries to start. He needs to be rid of her entirely.

I've thought the heart wrenching scenes have been really tough to take. (Props to the show for that.) But Gun has woven a tangled web and - given the way life unfolded - the one who's been most caught in it is himself. It's taken time for him to realize that every time he struggles to break free he becomes more entangled. While the show sets the stage for him to see that the reasons he pushed MY away no longer exist.

Now the only way he can get out of that web, is to give her the truth. Then either she'll leave him and he'll die there (literally... :-( ) or he'll need to receive her helping hand to pull him out. He's been trying to rescue her. But she will end up rescuing him. Because to escape his loneliness and fears, he'll need to realize MY's a co-equal partner whom he can trust and lean on.

I'll love it if the show goes this way. It'll subvert both the Candy and Noble Idiocy tropes in one smart move.

Thanks again for a profound recap Heads.
Thank you Gidget for the beautiful visual in your description of Lee Gun's entanglement ...'.Now the only way he can get out of that web, is to give her the truth. Then either she’ll leave him and he’ll die there (literally… :-( ) or he’ll need to receive her helping hand to pull him out."
I wonder if she is waiting for his permission or admission as Secretary Tak advised when he told Gun to admit to Mi-Young he was wrong. Mi-Young is so aware that Gun is a lonely person (she told the half brother that Gun was a lonely person) and lonely people have a hard time asking for help, they are used to doing life on their own...what a pity for Gun.
We are hopeful..."fighting"!!!

I think what makes the snail like pacing of the last two episodes worse is how fun and zippy the beginning episodes were. It also makes me a little worried for what the next three episodes might be like. I understand why they have it, even was prepared for it, but I don't know if I can handle another three episodes of it.

"I feel that in his man cave, LG can truly be himself "

I've also thought of it as a way the show lets us know what's really going on in his heart. In a way it represents Gun's loneliness. And the way they use the lighting shows what's shining brightest in the midst of that loneliness.

In flashbacks in his life with SR, the cave is saturated in a brilliant white light. SR lit the cave but their it's-all-about-her relationship still left him in his cave (lonely).

When things get rocky with MY and he's struggling with his lingering feelings for SR the ambient lighting is dark and the table with the divorce papers is brightly lit. MY had deepened his loneliness and the future divorce was his bright spot.

When he opens his heart to MY the cave is softly and warmly lit and rarely shown. In contrast their bedroom is saturated in a brilliant light. He has almost fully exited the cave (he still hasn't fessed up that he doesn't want to separate from her). But what's bright in his life is the new family he's making with MY.

When they lost KD the cave is very dark and the bassinet is brightly lit. He was profoundly lonely when he let both MY and KD go to spare them from living through his illness. After KD is lost forever we see what a bright spot his hopes for KD had been (which we see again in this episode).

Since MY came back, the cave is gloomy. What's brightly lit are the painting of KD, and even more-so, the exit.
Now that his heart is pulling him back to MY, all he wants to do is to exit that loneliness and be a family with her again.

That's why I saw Gun's outburst about MY's mother a little differently. I thought it was him finally being honest about what's in his heart. After he sent MY and KD away, the only sliver of happiness he kept for himself was his relationship with his omma. MY's comment that he couldn't be responsible for that choice poured salt on his deepest wound. He's been trying to take responsibility, at great cost to himself. And it's getting to be too much. He's at the breaking point.

Wow Gidget, I love how keenly you've followed something as simple and elusive as the lighting and pointed out what a beautiful job the entire production is doing on the storytelling front. I wonder if they have elves working on their team, weaving magic into the set when nobody is looking. DeeCee down the line pointed out how Mi-young's new 'resting place' also has a lighting that resembles the womb. And how it could symbolise a new beginning for them. And that made so much sense.

I'm all-consumed by the actors and their portrayal of the characters. But when you guys mention something like this, it adds so many dimensions to the viewing experiences. I feel like I've suddenly turned into the Mantis Shrimp with 16 colour cones in my eyes. Bling-ding-ding!

Dear "Fated to Love You", how do I love thee? Let me count the ways...

Last week some said that this series would become one for the ages (okay, so I'm embellishing a little...) And how! Like (almost) everyone else here, I cannot praise it enough and I have just decided to surrender myself to the thrall...

So I'm sharing my love letter to "Fated to Love You" with the like minded souls here who, like me, are cautiously preparing themselves for the withdrawal pangs that are sure to set in after the finale. http://spqetr.net/archives/2179

Hi Curioser and Curiosor,

"(now how's THAT for besotted..?)"
I can only answer you that because I am fluent in Hollands

thanks for sharing your love letter, beautifully and intellectually written -- different expressions and depths of love. :) i agree, sometimes, we think we know everything about love but when it is there we are just grasping of what/how it is. And, i think it is realistically portrayed in our beloved Fated.

I want to share this poetry from Rumi:

My Lips Got Lost

My lips got lost on the way to the kiss--
that's how drunk i
was.

Luckily though i still connected
with the most tender part
of her.

The moon conceived -- what
a wild looking baby
we are going to
have.

This is what we are hoping for Fated before it ends.

Btw, anyone interested for FTLY director cut DVD? copy from SOH blog by Gumi

We have started a demand survey to estimate demand for FTLY Director’s Cut DVD!
This is to figure out if pushing for Director’s Cut is actually possible, and if there’s not enough demand, we won’t be seeing Director’s Cut DVD at all.

Our current goal is to get 2000 sign-ups.
With enough people’s cooperation, FTLY Director’s Cut DVD would feature a lot of bonus videos!
Director’s Cut will include not only the broadcasted scenes, but also the unreleased cuts that were edited out due to time limit. Also, it will additionally feature BTS film, NG cuts, and interviews of actors, writers and the director.

*Episodes will have English subtitles

Don't forget that her sister still has a thing for Sec. Tak (and vice/versa), even though that plotline has fallen by the wayside. I hope that the two of them get together to do something about the LG/MY situation, and get closer to each other at the same time.

For me this week was frustrating... Seeing Gun like that brought me to tears (and that OST is NOT helping me at all, all the songs fit so well they make me weep). We need writer-nim to please give us back some of the happiness and some of the lightness...

That was my rant now to the real comment, even if I hated the stuckness (is that even a word?) of these two episodes I know they serve a purpose, mainly to shoe Ellie that even if Gun seems to not have changed, he cares about her, also they serve for Daniel to better understand Mi Young/Ellie... The sad part is we only have two weeks left and I see the writer-nim taking WAAAAY to long to make Gun and Ellie/Mi Young together... Come on, I need some sunshine up in here, before I loose my cool.

I love fated to love you. This show just hits the right spots. It cracks me up then brings me to tears. The story both weighs heavily and yet at the same time deftly balances it with slapstick humor without jarring the overall tone of the show. It hooks me in emotionally that it suspends my critical judgment. I’m just enjoying the ride, watching and being with these two leads, completely enthralled and invested in where they are going and how.

Oh they really teased us with the cliffhanger at the end of episode 15. It was the sort of thing where instinctively you want them to kiss, but on the other hand you know that it wouldn't quite be right because both have the misunderstanding that the other person is still in a relationship.

I was really anxious how that would turn out, and this fainting-from-fever is quite a good save. It is actually quite brilliant because I think MY is so guarded that it will be the unspoken secret acts of love that will touch her heart. Especially considering how Gun seems to be just digging himself into a deeper hole. -_-

Minor panic again when Gun was trying so hard to refrain from kissing the sleeping MY at his office, because 1) that would really piss her off 2) I so wanted Gun to be above stupid-things-male-leads-do-in-K-dramas.

Hey guys I have a crazy new idea now. So, Gun has his man cave with everything that was intended for Geddong, and it'll be a shame if that' not put to use somewhere. Maybe, Mom will come in useful. After all, she is the only person who would sneak around to infiltrate his personal space. Who knows, she might let slip to MY about Gun's pining for Geddong? *crosses fins*

I am so thrilled for Yong that he is growing up and willing to try to stand up for his noona haha! But calling her noona in front of his mom is not going to be as convincing as jagiya! d=

I wanted to die laughing when the the son-in-law and president Park were so over the moon with Mom's attention. d= Okay I've always thought that president Park was her in-law but since they clearly have different surnames... why is he doing living with them and hanging around them? Did I miss something? *confused*

Uh that corridoor and lift stalking thing is actually a bit freaky. I don't think MY would be pleased if she knew Gun was watching her. But it's sweet that he has no qualms about doing things for her in front of every one else.

Looking at Yong and Manager Tak working so well is pretty cute. They were such rivals for Gun's attention previously, but now they are such a cute pair plotting to bring Gun and MY together. d= Grandma is so so cute. Awww the feels.

Can't get over how silly and sweet Gun and Mom are to. So much bravado but they care so much about each other. (= Good for Gun that even if he doesn't open up about his feelings to MY, at least he has made clear to MY that her mom is as much a mother to him.
Side note: I saw someone comment on Viki that the take out bag looks especially huge and posh, which was a really good catch!

Gotta love Manager Tak's dramatic flair. The way he crumbled down as though he was systematically taken out was just hilarious. I gotta say I can't understand the obsession Tak has about getting his butt slapped by another guy but... okay whatever, as long as it's cute.

So glad that the Lee Yong Ja plotline is finally at an end. I have been so stressed that she will find out about the...

I'm not too sure about that. She looked more angry than anything at being lied about. I've rarely seen MY look so mad.

Given all their misunderstandings - plus Se Ra's meddling - she might assume Gun is just messing around with her. I just hope Gun is the first to speak, to say that he had thought she was over him until he saw this painting, and to ask for a chance.

No matter how much he cares about her, the whole deceptive game over a painting that clearly means so much to her is distasteful. You don't toy with someone you love, even if it buys you time with them. No doubt Gun is hot looks-wise, but he really needs to grow up. I loved the first 8 episodes of this show, but now I kind of half-watch while multi-tasking.

Ugh! Wow. The tears just keep coming, show. From episode 10 until episode 16?? Just ridiculous!

I think some may think that the past 2-3 episodes were slow ones and though I also think that, I really don't mind. Instead of considering them fillers, I think they're just a slow-burn to what will happen in the next episodes (hopefully!). The nuances, the minutest interaction between the OTP reminds us that they should resolve the issues soon so that they cna be together, that the underlying sadness in Gunnie's laugh is no more.

But please show, no more tears! Be it RAW, subbed, or recapped, the scenes never fail to make me cry. I may seem complaining but pleeeease, we want them happy now! Our OTP should be able to smile now! So that we can be happy, too!

Those last five minutes in her studio....THAT is why this show completely owns me. frankly I can't even remember much of what passed in the rest of the episode, that one scene just gutted me. You could literally see the realization FINALLY hitting him, and the man just transformed. It was so, so amazing to watch. I've held off till now, but with that one scene, Jang Hyuk has a devotee in me. That was a stunning performance. And I got all this while watching the Raw episode, without understanding a single word of what was being said on-screen.

Something tells me we're gonna see a new Gun next week. Eeeeee! *happy dance*

I really salute the production team. They used the 3 most important items that Gun and MY exclusively shared -- 1) the heart-shaped lollipops (used in silhouette of a man), 2) snail finger sign, 3) Keddongie (used in the child's painting).
They were metaphorically expressed in which only them can recognize value they symbolized. These what connect them. These what bind them. These what will bring them together again.

And the lighting in that last scene was so dramatic and almost candle-lit. It was very warm and womb-like. When he walked up the stairs and entered the studio, it was almost as though he was enveloped in warmth with the reds and oranges and yellows. It really made the painting of him stand out with the blue background. It's the perfect place to sit in the almost dark and feel safe enough to say what is in your heart. Here's hoping that the warmth of that room leads to not an angry confrontation, but a healing one.

aww. can i join the club and we be triplets instead? i may not always agree with everything, but such a joy to hear in on your thoughts, both of you. also because of Oppa Love who binds us stronger than superglue. must. stick. together.

@ boxed, need to watch properly once more myself, but wanted to say, i want to give Gunnie one sock in the nose. Because what great big realisation is hitting him finally? About how much she loves him? Helloooo! When did she ever claim not to? HE is the one who orchestrated that elaborate ruse to trick her into thinking HE does not love HER. HE is the one who pushed her away. How can he just assume she stopped loving him because he asked her to? I mean, look at how the past three years have been for him. Why would that painting shock him? He's been privy to her thoughts and feelings almost to a t.

If anything should be hitting anyone, it should be the other way round. Gunnie's realisation does absolutely nothing for me because what we're all building up towards is Mi-young's - not even realisation - her excavation of this once beautiful now festering truth about Gun! And then hopefully she can be the one to give him a sock for me. And then happy ever after?

Ooof. Have more to say but late for stuff-that-matters-in-real-life. Hope to catch up with both of you later.

Love.

FTLY triplets? Hahahaha. Sure. That makes Dramabeans the "Mother-of-three-daughters" restaurant we hang out in. :D

Jhu, what you (and everybody else) said about Gun is completely true. He has brought all of this upon himself. And the anger at his sheer stupidity is justified too. But what I thought the painting did for him was, it finally made him realize just how wrong he had been in thinking that sacrificing his own happiness could make her happy. His actions were borne out of his need to protect her and a healthy dose of self-pity for himself, but I think he genuinely thought she had moved on, and become a new, stronger person who had a joyous life ahead with another man. Over these last two episodes, he has gradually seen that he might not have been right, but he would've probably continued to delude himself in his mode of self-sacrifice and let her go, had he not seen that painting. Her art has always spoken to him on a different level, right from the days of the Geddongie cup she had made. He had thought she would be happy if he changed the sad situation she was then in (or likely to be in the future), but he failed to realize that the source of her happiness had always been HIM, not the situations they found themselves in. And that painting clearly spelled that out for him, in colour. Just like he had given all his happiness to her, she had given hers to him. That's the way it is for them, and that IS quite an epiphany for a man as mulishly stubborn as Gun is. At least that's my take on it.

I don't know how they'll play out the Huntington's angle, but for me, it has become a moot point now. I'd like for him not to have it, of course, but even if he does, he won't be the insane hypochondriac anymore, and Mi-young is now strong enough in every way to handle it. She's a person of her own now, not merely the good wife and mother she earlier aspired to be. And while I adored her earlier avatar, maybe the pain and separation was, in hindsight, good for her too. So I've finally made my peace with all the angst.

So Gunnie's a changed man after coming to the realisation that his decisions have all been mistakes and his whole effort is a failure. Well, that's also called hitting rock bottom. You have nowhere else to go but up from here, Gunnie-sshi. And I hope to see you rise now.

Boxed-in, you lay your thoughts and feelings down so beautifully, I can totally see things from your side. That's the beauty of coming into things with different perspectives, and then finding that someone else's views can only add to your understanding. It's so enriching. And I feel so indebted.

What you said about Mi-young's art work is pretty symbolic. I hadn't paid much attention to them as a series and how they represent the relationship between the leads. Looking back, I agree. They've done a lot to communicate our Snail Couple's love to the audience and to each other. Serving as a bridge when other modes of communication are unavailable.

Would also really like to see Mi-young have more agency in the show. Because she's clearly capable of making wiser decisions. Okay, I take that back. Not that she's wiser. I just feel like it is, or should be, a relationship based on equality. Where both sides are loved and respected, where both sides have the power to make choices and take responsibility for the consequences.

I need him to be vulnerable in front of her for once. For that, like someone somewhere suggested, we may need her to take a tour of Gunnie's man-cave. Or a heart-to-heart talk with Secretary Tak. Or the best of the lot - an honest confession from Gun. One that includes the topic of his illness. So that it can get resolved in their heads for once and for all as something that doesn't require a resolution.

I keep thinking back to the things I hear about Huntington's. About how many people choose not to get tested, because they don't want to live with knowledge that it will slowly cripple them. There's a reason to that, right? Because we've got to live in the now. And love in the now. And with all the strength all your living and loving has given you, you'll be able to face that better. So...urm..I don't mean to say we should go down that path with our story and actually give him the illness. But I hope, in their heads, they are able to sort it out and will have decided to commit to each other regardless of what the outcome is going to be.

Also, one last thing before I stop my rambles. Keddongie. We were crushed by his/her death, but it suddenly dawned on me that Keddongie is very much alive. In solitude, both Gun and Mi-young do enough to keep their little one alive. They are and will always be parents to Keddongie first. And the way they keep talking to the kid like s/he is still around. It keeps their love for each other alive.

Will be a happy day for Keddongie when these two sort their shit out. Love how s/he's always part of the picture though. Like how it's not just a couple we're talking about, but this family of...

0

Haha. Didn't know I'd exceeded word limit again! All I wanted to say was -

...this family of three, always.

0

can i just say that, that is not the realization that she loves him, he knows, that's why he pushed her away.
IT IS the realization that the happiness he so want her to have, is him all along. and MY's painting is so much more, it also represents her wish that he is happy (enveloping him in the swirly candy.. i can't even!) T____T

Yay! We need to do a high five or something. Squiggly snailing with our fingers, perhaps?

Panda, I'm right with you about making beautiful babies. But that might not be too far away...

I've been obsessed with k-dramas for the past two years. And that was when I didn't even find them good at all. Honestly, I need my sturdy, reliable FF button to get through most shows these days. And even then, I can't get myself to finish any. Dramaland has a knack for ruining endings. It's where all good endings come to die.

I think my obsession is sustained more by my attachment to the dramaverse in general, and dramabeans and its offerings more specifically. A go-to place for when all else in life is sad or mundane. I get all wistful thinking about it. Ha.

It is really a rare occasion for me when a drama does this, achieving this level of depth and perfection. I'm glad to have all of you here to process it all.

And Boxed-in, I think I read somewhere earlier that you're very new to k-dramas? Well if FTLY is one of your firsts, you're really lucky. I was one to draw comparisons between Gun and Dokko Jin at first. But other than both being crazy, they're truly unique and memorable characters in their own right. Plus they both have their own brand of crazy. So Ji-Sub's Joong Wong is another fab-tab piece of crazy, but Master's Sun just left me feeling cold. Did not know what was up with it. Of all three, I for one prefer Gunnie. Mostly because the show as a whole strikes all the right chords with me.

The Hong Sisters can really stretch their humor to the limits. And Greatest Love is slapstick and entertaining as hell. But FTLY feels so much more...meaningful overall. The baby in FTLY pulled the stakes higher and made the context overall richer. You should definitely go for Greatest Love too. But seeing that you watched this first and are already so in love with it, I trust this to be your sentimental favourite.

You might also want to check out City Hall. Which was hated and loved with equal gusto around this parts, I think. But for me, it was another more mature romance, punctuated with a similar zany humor. Hope you enjoy it if you decide to try it out after all.

@jhu & @Boxed_In - You guys never cease to amaze me with how much depth you take to analyse each of the FTLY episodes. I really admire the way you guys look deeply into K-Dramas, rather than watching them on the surface like most teenagers do (^.^)

Anyhow, this episode was one that really pulled many of my heart strings and I am hoping so badly that LG and MY will get back together within the next episode. As you guys have pointed out, the artworks are very powerful symbols of our protagonist's past and love. As my mother would often say, artworks are a powerful reflection of one's inner state. When we experience emotions, we have a tendency to release them through art because not only does this allow us to temporarily escape from reality, it allows us to uncover the deepest recesses within our heart, where we keep indescribable feelings well hidden. MY's artwork demonstrates this beautiful notion and it becomes evident to us, of the strong influence her marriage and memories with Gun has shaped her life. Also, I really admire how the artwork of Kendonggiee is the bridge that links MY and Gun together. It's heart-warming to know that the child they lost but loved so dearly, is the compass that leads them to find each other.

Within this episode, I could not help but notice MY's demeanour when she is nearby Daniel, in contrast with Gun. Every time Daniel is trying to please MY, her facial expression suggests that she does not harbor any feelings for him and it seems like he does not inspire her like Gun does. Throughout the whole drama so far, Gun has always been her support system and counsellor. He has always been the one to give her advice, so that she can come out of her shell and he allows for her inner beauty to become well acknowledged by those around her. Even as Young Ja, he is her muse. He inspires her to dig deep into her thoughts and gather herself together within the tough times of her life and that's what I really love about MY and LG relationship. Their love is one of a kind and I've never seen it been portrayed with so much detail and chemistry.

@Jhu I'm a medical student btw, and I doubt that he will end up with Huntingdon's disease. This neurodegenerative disease is incurable and the prognosis is heartbreaking. A lot of people who have relatives with Huntingdon's disease do not choose to take the test because they'd rather move on with life and make the best of it, rather than being constantly being bogged down by learning that they will face a detrimental outcome. Having said so, I personally believe that one's family should have the right to know because it would just be a total shock to them once they find out about the disease and it could lead to feelings of guilt etc. It's highly unlikely that Gun will get Huntingdon's disease because that would be another big blow for MY whose already lost her first child with him, Gae Dong! I think the drama will use Gun's possibility of having Huntingdon's...

Aww Moc Tien. It is thanks to forums like Dramabeans with their amazing recappers and all you lovely peers that it's possible to experience dramas in that deep and profound level. And I really feel incredibly thankful for that.

Loved reading your post. And I agree with what you say about Gunnie being her guiding light almost, in spite of himself. I mean, that scene where he's playing Young-ja and feeding inspiration to her, that line about a woman's inner beauty and never giving up on your dreams, it was just so illuminating in terms of where Gunnie stands in Mi-young's life. He is there not just to support her in times of sorrow, but also to bring out the best in her in her happier moments. I felt like that was a really important juncture, mostly because we're all so focused on (thanks to Gun) wreaking minimum havoc on Mi-young's life, we forget about what can Gun do to make it better than it is. Gun role isn't damage control, Gunnie-yah! when will you get that?

And I'm so glad I'm getting a medical perspective on this. I LOVE that you call it a mental barrier, above everything else. That's exactly what it is!

Of course, I keep thinking about what realistic problems these two could face in terms of being ordinary couple trying to maintain a loving relationship. And often, you could really just have certain limitations in your world-views that would inevitably put a strain on any relationship. And becoming aware of that, and trying to work on yourself, well that would really be my ideal kind of love story, I think.

What we have in FTLY are two people who are just too perfect to be true. The more I think about it, the more unbelievable they become. The only problems that occur in their lives are caused by external forces or by their own extreme goodness. They never make mistakes, never have shortcomings. Although I do love that, especially about Gunnie since every other dramaland male is just such an asshole, I do think focusing on individual shortcomings and having the story be about this inner transformation - ah! that would be so satisfying to watch for once, Moc Tien.

That's because all real people have some flaws, no matter how good they are. It would be a drama's true strength in giving us those kind of characters who are flawed, and yet we are able to love them. Give me someone like Sera, for example, as a protagonist. And help me empathise with her. Most often, we start out with the best intentions, and want to be as good as both Mi-young and Gunnie. But our pasts, our experiences, our lifelong habits shape us, and we find ourselves doing shitty things even when we want to do good. Although we love hating her, I feel like we are more like Sera than like any of the other goodie two-shoes in the story. And if we showed her moving towards some kind of growth or transformation, that would really be something.

Of course, I love this show and the leads to bits. It's just that I've had so much time until the next episode to contemplate on the show, let my thoughts marinate, and couldn't help but think about that. Mostly because I do agree that the recent developments do not represent the most realistic conflicts. And once this misunderstanding (honestly speaking, there isn't much more than that here) is resolved, there's no other conflict that needs solving. Because everything else, save for the communication gap, is perfect and just waiting to fall into place. And it dawned on me that, gosh, they could have focused on conflicts that may arise for real when all the initial romance fades and the couple begin to discover uneasy things about each other. You know, what happens after the happy ever after...

But hey, maybe I should just stop complaining and move to JTBC for that.

Just that I can't help but imagine what a diamond would have come out of it, considering the acting calibre of the two Jangs.

Regardless, your thoughts on the show are precious. It was such a warm surprise, coming here after so many days. Thanks. :)

And of course, you are MOST welcome to be part of this burgeoning family. Ha. Hugs!

Random observations on the rest of the episode:

-Manager Tak totally set up that "accidental" meeting in the gardens. Good job, I say.

-Little Yong is soooo cute. & that neck-ache by Mama Yong gave me Secret Garden flashbacks. Heh. Fingers crossed for a baby-making competition in the Lee family in the very near future.

-Did anyone notice how Gun covered the Keddongie painting with brochures while text-lying to Mi-young? So cute. & sad.

-MY's mom thinks President Park has a crush on her? LOL. Also, probably true, hehe. More than one man is in love with that lady's food, apparently.

-Sera, just...fuck off, will ya? & while I like your as-yet undiscovered brother much, much more than you, I won't complain if you take him along too. Go pitch your tent in an ice-cream factory or something, boo.

-& how ironical is it that Daniel is the one to bring the Lollipop painting to her (and consequently, Gun)? Really, someone give Danny boy the Best Neighbourhood Oppa Award. See, that's what the forces of fate want you to be to Mi-young. Now I hope you find your sister quickly, and ship both of yourselves to some far-off place to nurse your clingy broken hearts.

-I felt these last few episodes have been mirroring many of their happy moments during their married life, with a bitter-sweet twist, of course. The hotel rooms, the anchovy-wrap date, the lights being switched on for her as she walked in...so many poignant moments in there.

-How AWESOME is it that they used her art to convey so much throughout this story? The cups, her paintings, her designs for Gun's company- all of it ties in so beautifully with her immense love for Gun and their unborn child. So while Daniel might have been her teacher and her best critic, it is really Gun who is her inspiration. That's a really nice character beat.

@sweetcaroline, that's a good observation. I always miss all those symbols in a show. Thanks!

@dukdam and greentea, yay for all the Jang-love. They have earned every bit of it and more.

Lol @ your changing tone over Sera and Daniel.

Did you notice what was also the poorest excuse for some PPL?

'You need to be healthy, Mi-young-sshi. For that, you need to wear THESE shoes and run with me every morning.'

Like we didn't already have a hard enough time buying into the character machinations of Daniel Pitt...*shakes her head at the writers*

Hahahaha. Jhu, technically I could still defend Daniel and Sera, since he told her he had proposed to Miyoung, so Sera thought she had another chance with Gunnie and so took it.....but you know what, I don't want to. This episode landed me so far in Gun's camp (I was trying really hard to stay neutral till now) that the siblings are just completely out of sight for me. Bleh. Go wherever, do whatever, just leave our lovebirds alone, they have enough problems of their own.

You know what I'm hoping for in the next episode? Mi-young to get raving, spitting mad at Gun. And him letting out his frustration in return. A big fight where they both blow up. I think it would be a great scene. Hee.

Thanks for the recommendations. I tried watching Master's Sun too! & just couldn't abide it. The only dramas I've watched in their entirety are Secret Garden (on ff-mode) and You From Another Star. Seen bits and parts of others, but have left them unfinished. K-dramas take some getting used to. I started with YFAS and it took me ages to accept all the perfect prettiness onscreen. Only after that could I appreciate the story. Strange because I've watched a sizeable number of Korean films over the years, but didn't get into dramaland until this year. With you on what a great place Dramabeans is. It has been such a big help during my baby steps here.

I will give Greatest Love a try though, if only to compare Dokko Jin to Gunnie and make nasty fangirly comments. :D

Oh my god Boxed-in, just finished watching the epi with subtitles and my mind is blown. I think this episode just sent a mini nuclear explosion through my heart. I feel quite undone.

I want them to just get back already.

Even with all this pain the show keeps doling out, how can it be so beautiful? I am out of my wits. And will appreciate wordlessly for now.

0

Hey boxed-in, Greatest Love was my 2nd ever kdrama and the 1st I fell in love with. It's my sentimental fav though FTLY comes a close 2nd. Dokko Jin was such an ass in the earlier eps, its a testament to how great CSW is that by ep7 I had fallen irrevocably in love with him.

I honestly can't choose which character I love more btw Dokko Jin and Gunnie

I really wish there was someone else to blame (ie. Sera) for all this angst besides Gun himself. The ball is completely in his court, so if/when he finally decides to pursue Mi-Young for real, the show will have to provide a REALLY good catalyst to justify that decision. Because otherwise, all those miserable years of heartbreak and abandonment that he inflicted upon Mi-Young would have been in vain :/ ... and somehow, I find that more upsetting that the actual heartbreak itself.

Hope Mi Young doesn't accept Gun's advances yet. He hasn't quite redeemed himself in my eyes...

That's the problem with comparing the original to this ine..In the original we knew the person to blame and forgave the lead but in this everything is guns fault..sera migjt have the smallest amount to do with it but up until now like heads2 said..d everything is falling into guns plan of manipulating the situation..I read comments on viki about how MY needs to shape up but she pour her heart out to gun to love her before the time skip and he flat out rejected her saying she was a burden...how do u get over that coming from the one u love

Now with all these misunderstandings with sera and gun what is she suppose to think..she knows he knows she loves him but she has no idea where he is and sera is in th picture in her mind..everything to her view can be thay gun pitied her which she rwallt doesn't want..

Soul searching wouldn't even help..only way is if something dramatic happens where MY can forgive him..males it more interesting to me to see how gun can fix this situation cause the original was easy to predict since we knew who was at fault..but the original Al also gave the leads plenty of couple time together..This version is giving toooooo much angst

But I also think this is why I find the script for the remake is much more sophisticated - because while putting all the blame to a secondary character is easy (and lazy I would claim), deep in the audience's heart we know this is all too fairy tale style and we just can't treat the story seriously. This is especially true for a love story, compared to say, a murder story. I'd prefer watching a main character taking full responsibility of his/her own decisions, the impacts thereon and then adjust his/her future decision-making with regard to that. That's how human beings learn, mostly through trial and error.

I tend to believe it's more worthwhile for the audience to go through the stages of confusion, struggle and self-enlightenment together with the characters, and in the case of FTLY, Gun and MY.

wow.. are you calling the original writers "lazy and easy"? bear in mind without their awesome story telling to materialize the highest rated TW drama ever, we wouldn't even get this so called perfect remake. it's "easier" to take the original material, find out its flaws from numerous reactions, then scratch the flaws, redo them as "perfect"dont you think?

i dont think its easier to make the secondary lead evil, nor i think it's easier to make male lead a jerk and hateful, it's not easy too, to make a female lead's character so spineless and somewhat annoying.. yet despite the flaws, people tuned in to find out what are to become of these characters, because they did win people's hearts with their imperfections, whether to despise them, or root for them, people wanted to see they get what they deserved.

i find the original writers were risk takers., they were not afraid to colour their characters black, they never tried to make all their characters likable, they didnt mind their characters do silly almost comic-like things, they didnt mind their characters to stoop so low. that's why i found the original is full of colours and never a dull moment. there are reasons why TW FTLY was a worldwide phenomenon and will continue to be a classic, so i believe the original writers deserve the credit where the credit is due.

oh, you know what i think is easy? throw in amnesia trope whenever you hit the brick wall. and the HD? puurfecttt!.. i enjoy both versions, but the belittling of the original to justify your preferred version is really getting on my nerves.

The reason Gunnie couldnt vocalize his love...of course becuz of his disease etc. but more importantly it is becuz of Daniel. When Sec Tak tells him to go for MY again, he says he cant when she is living a happy life with a good person next to her. Whats more, he knows Daniel proposed, he also knows she had an intention to accept it. She said if she makes family again it would be Daniel...How can Gun approach her in that situation? He doesnt know she still wants him. He thinks she is over him, and she will get together with Daniel.

but hopefully next week will be different. After seeing the lollipop man, Gun might finally realize that his presence was bigger in MY and she loved him so dearly. Now it is time to get selfish, dear, cuz only when u selfishly pursue your happiness can MY also be happy!

Thanks HeadsNo2 for the fast recap.. I agree with you in regards to LG not being vocal to MY about his undying love for her.. so, are men really like that? So does that mean women should really just read between the lines?

One more thing I would like to point, though we see Sera going back to her b*itchy, selfish self, I am MORE DISAPPOINTED with Daniel because how could he utter the word "proposal" in front of Sera when he in that very conversation heard from Sera himself that she has nothing going on with LG? I take it as him trying to make Sera go after LG with his misleading words. It negates all good he's done to MY.. like brother, like sister.. clinging on those who have treated their hearts with sincerity and consideration.

Ha ha.. I thought MY moving closer to Gun would be to slap him, or at least give him a good dressing down, for lying to her and pretending to be someone he's not, for manipulating her. Until she realises that Unnie's text advice were sound and a source of comfort for her.

Then again, I can always be wrong, right? We'll just have to wait for next week, eh? :-)

Thanks HeadsNo2 for today's episode recap. Thank you also again for the recap of episode 2 because it was that recap that convinced me to watch this Korean version of TW's "Fated To Love You". Since then, I've enjoyed watching this drama and continued to applaud the actors, the director and writers. Each episode so far has made me laugh, sad, excited, fall in love, incoherent, pensive, etc. I find every detail or part of this drama an amazing storyteller - the lead actors' acting skills, their memorable funny or heartwarming lines, the baby diary, the paintings, the parodies, the background music, etc. In summary, I just love this drama. Thank you FTLY. :-)

Now about today's episode, it answered my question from yesterday "Where is the love?" - a question for Mi-Young who in the last episode clearly held the separation line between her and Lee Gun. The answer: it's right before MY's eyes (and our viewer's eyes) - unveiled by MY's painting of LG in an outline form of a man filled in with heart-shaped orange lollipops. We all know it's Lee Gun all along in MY's heart but last episode seemed to blur this truth. So thank you to that painting (and to Daniel) for it reaffirmed MY's love for LG.

Aside from the last scene, there are so many memorable scenes in today's episode. One that I want to highlight is the scene where LG tells Keddongie to go with her mother to France. LG's facial expression was both sad and loving at the same time. It appears he is really letting go of MY. But I hope that after seeing the lollipop man painting, LG will now take courage and boldly confess his love for MY. LG-ssi, Fighting!

I'm trying to figure out if Daniel knows that it's a painting of Gun or not. He is the one that had it sent from Paris - she was surprised to see it, and a tiny bit dismayed. Daniel's purported reason for having it sent over was that it was one of her first pieces, and he wants her to be inspired by her painting origins. But that doesn't make sense, because he knows why she began painting, and why would he want to dredge up her feelings for Gun? I mean, he must have asked her in the last three years who the painting is of.... unless he thinks that he is the subject!!! I'm just so confused as to why Daniel, of all people, would want her to hang a picture of Gun in her studio! I realize that he probably doesn't understand the true significance of the heart candies, but come on, does he really not get the point of this painting???

Then again, the painting is of Gun with his back to her. And was made a long time ago. Maybe Daniel wants her to remember how far she's come.

Gun's genetic disease has been absent since his fainting episode three years ago. Since then he's been eating regularly at Mi Young's mother's restaurant, the anchovy wrap, or whatever it is. So, I'm wondering if that food is somehow keeping his genetic disease at bay. Since fear of the early onset of his disease is all that's keeping them apart . . . Just a hopeful theory.

Required fields are marked *

The show has inserted the ice cream thing a couple of times. A couple of episodes ago, when SR took her students for ice cream, she was particular about keeping her tradition of eating a certain type of ice cream on a cone. Last episode we saw it was a tradition for Daniel to take his sister for a certain type of ice cream on a cone. This episode the show connected their ice cream preference, but omitted the cone.

My question is, if she's his sister, why wouldn't she remember that her real name is Mi Young and that she has a doting big brother somewhere in the world?

If she turns out to be his sister, Daniel will get his wish that his sister has been living well. But realizing that she's turned out to be such a horrible person...he'll think it's all his fault. Poor guy. I just hope they don't invoke the my-family-member-hurt-you-so-I-can't-marry-you trope to explain his pulling away from MY.

Thanks for the recap HeadsNo2.

I have trust in the writers Joo Chan-Ok and Jo Jin-Kuk and I am really enjoying their version of Fated to Love You. I don't really have a problem with the way things are unfolding for Lee Gun and Kim Mi-Young - the journey of them finding their way back to each other.

Having watched the Tawainese version I knew to expect highs (comedy) and lows (dealing with a miscarriage). I appreciate the writers for not taking the subject matter lightly and devoting several episodes to show Lee Gun and Kim Mi-Young grieving and how hard it can be to move forward apart and/or together with life and living after experiencing the loss of a child.

Fated to Love You is doing a really good job with incorporating the meta jokes and alluding to some of the past works by "The 2 Jangs." :)

I can't help but wonder if Choi Daniel will make a cameo within the next 2 weeks. I would love it if he did since he's starred with Jang Nara in Baby-Faced Beauty and School 2013.

After all:
Choi Jin-Hyuk = Daniel Pitt.
Both actors are named Choi.
One actor is named Daniel in real life and the other actor is playing a character named Daniel in FTLY.
Choi Daniel and Jang Hyuk are tied 2-2 as Jang Nara's costar. A cameo could break the tie.

Also, in that last scene, I realized that even though Gun is partly to be blamed for everything that had happened, he is so pitiable because he had to bear it all ALONE. He had no one to confide to, crying in sorrow in his man cave. At least MY had DP, she started anew in France, and she could express herself through her paintings.

R u saying that MY or even sera was a bigger part to the problem..The thing with sera is that even if she didnt talk to gun he would of told MY he was leaving her and the baby..then he emphasis it again when MY ask if they can be together but he said she was a burden..it's his fault for crating this mess and catring it on his shoulders alone since he rejected MY..who else could be at fault other then the guy hiding his true feelings and thinking he knows what's best for everyone..imo everything would of been solve if gun had said let's be together..is there anything else other then gun thay could of prevented the separation

I didn't mean that Gun did not have a small part in their separation, I'm sorry if I thought that it was already understood how large his part of the blame is. However, in my opinion, Sera holds 1% of the blame in what happened with that fabricated divorce agreement, so for me, it was not solely Gun. What I was trying to emphasize was that Gun does not have someone who he can confidently release his pent up emotions or even share his motivations for doing everything he did leading to their separation, because in real life, I believe that we have even 1 person we can share everything.

Thanks for the hard work and giving it to us ( crazy, devoted fans )so quickly ....,

FTLY16 You own me!
Is it just me or most of you guys went-" say WHUT, no Kiss ?????" If the rest of the epi wasn't that good( esp the end) I would have been MAD.

Once again, my heart and brain were working overtime. I was rooting for Gun, being so clumsy and adorkable and all on his pursuit of MYsshi. Some of you might think he was being a stalker during the office hallway/ elevator, but I beg to differ. I saw a poor soul who yearns for his snail and quietly respect her request to be left alone. I can FEEL his pain in his eyes...( JHsshi, I apologize for living in the cave all these years and had NEVER seen any of your other work... You ARE The Man^.^)
I think I can feel the cold exterior that MYsshi has built( against Gunnie) is slowly melting......but of course, PDnim is smart...the cliffhanger we've been left with tells another story...The beautiful, caring " friendship" between " Unnie" and Ellie, in which MYsshi opens her heart and soul comfortably, will become a fuse/weapon of mass destruction.
MYsshi would probably be pissed beyond reparable( I would, too). Her heart is hurt by Gunnie( again!) Oh, Gun, can we just learn to be truthful( I know, I know, you didn't do it with malice), but I'm sure some of our legal experts ( hee, I won't name names) here would inform you- You. Are. In. BIG. I really liked IRIS 2 even though they messed it up somewhere along the storyline, but to watch JH and Lee Da hae and Kim So-yeon was enough.

I didn't watch Chuno because I thought the love storyline was too sad, but my Korean friend is urging me to give it another try. She says it's really good.

Older dramas he was in were really good, too:
BRIGHT GIRL'S SUCCESS STORY (my FIRST Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara collaboration), INTO THE SUNLIGHT.

I'm sad to say that I only saw GREAT AMBITION dubbed in my language and they totally cut a lot of the drama out.

I would love to watch it in Korean if I can.

If you do start, I really recommend WINDSTRUCK.

JK is also best friends with my favorites CHA TAE-HYUN, KIM JOONG-KOOK!!

You can also watch JH and his interactions with CTH and KJK on FAMILY OUTING on episode 66-67!! He was also on episode 27-29.

Lollipop=love, happiness

MY gave a lollipop to Gun saying it will make his love come true. And Gun gave a lollipop to MY 3 years ago, narrating 'If there is any happiness left for me, I hope you can take it. You have to be happy, MiYoung-ssi.'

So what does it mean when MY painted Gunnie filled with lollipops? GUN=LOVE, HAPPINESS

Cmon Gunnie! You saw that now. You know what it means right? Go embrace her, kiss her, apologize and maybe get slapped by her, and love her, get loved, and make dog poopie horse poopie cow poopie...

Another miserable week to wait.. Can pd-nim be nice to add extra slot for what will happen in next eps?.. I hope gun can really speak up for his feeling.. And daniel has a big heart to let MY go..
btw, when MY meet her bestfriend? And in the show, i didn't see the chemistry and siblings interaction between MY n her sisters. Feels like they are from different father..

I think that's how MY's relationship with her sisters is supposed to be, in this version and the original. In the original version, MY was the unwanted accident between her mother and father. Her sisters were much closer with each other and did not really respect her much until she got married to a rich guy.
Her mother did not treat her as well in the original version until much later because MY was the child she always wanted to abort that she decided to keep.

This was a great cliffhanger and total switch in guns character..before if he got caught by MY like at the garden or her mother's shop he would act out and defensive to the point where he was over compensating for his mistakes..but now being caught by MY as the unnie he was calm and collective and didn't show any sort of defense or fear..I think the next episode he will finally start being the gun she knew instead of the child hiding behind this facade and laughter to show people he is doin great when everyone knows how hurt and alone he is..

Thanks for the recap...even though you are placing the blame on Gun:)

I do not think Gun is unable to sort out his emotions...I think he is keenly aware, but very vulnerable. This man is a CEO, but he hesitates and hovers over a kiss...his DNA is screaming to make passionate-long-overdue-lovemaking...while his hands trembles when he reaches out to touch her hair.

Yes, noble idiot with the family disease, but the depth of his love in wanting her happiness to last for years - to replace the lost of their baby.I am thankful that the drama showed a father's broken heart over the lost of his child - usually the focus is only on the mom.

I am waiting with great anticipation for the kiss - you can tell an untruth with words - actions can be perceived incorrectly (this eps was full of that) - but with all that anguish/longing/hurt/love/vulnerability between the two of them - their kiss will speak the truth of their hearts.

Gun kept on pushing away MY and just wishing her happiness is not because of his disease. It is more of his guilt of losing Keddongie. He is blaming himself (gosh he vehemently cried alone).. If you recalled the scene when they where trapped in he cottage, he talked about the comforting sound of the ready, then he mumbled, "it is ok, it is ok, it is not your fault." The disease is an obvious excuse for him of cutting his ties with MY and that is what we have seen as viewers in ep 12.

I suspect MY will just be v pissed at the start of next episode, just like when she found out D. Pitt was not a priest. But then once she starts to re-read her text messages with Young-Ja Unni she will understand how much Gun loves her.

But how awesome it is to see Gun declaring in front of MY that he's her No. 1 fan? Gunnie Jjang!!

yes, how great is it that he said that line with a straight face? as though to indicate the sincerity that is masked behind the whole pretend LYJ identity? hopefully MY would be perceptive enough to see through the subterfuge and not dwell on the technicality. and start asking Gun questions. i don't think Gun would be a match for the stronger, more confident Ellie Kim once she starts interrogating him.

Indeed. It's a moment when all the pretenses of Gun were discarded and he's ready to talk genuinely to MY about his feelings. BUT, since it's a drama, I think MY won't be in the same mood YET. Aigoo, I so look forward to the moment when they talk to each other honestly about their feelings. Hopefully by ep 18. Keep my fingers crossed!!

It's to raise awareness for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," which is kind of cute/ironic considering that Gun is supposed to have a similar disease in this show.

But I love the way that Jang Nara barely showed a reaction, while Jang Hyuk looked completely miserable! I enjoyed both of those! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, HeadNo2 for the recap. I'm always reading the recaps after watching each episodes and it's my first time giving my comment, so please bear with me ^_^

Ah! I really love this show! I just watched Windstruck I guess a month ago and got curious of JH. And little did I know, I'm already into this show after knowing he's the lead of the remake of FTLY. I loved the original version but I must say, this one has captured my heart. I felt like I am in a roller-coaster and in as much as I like to get off, I would just scream and love the feel, from laughing, to crying and even doing both at the same time. Ah, just crazy!

I would really love to see Gun chasing MY this time and just fight for his love for her. Though I also wonder how MY will react when she sees (if there'll be such an opportunity) the revised divorce agreement where the last part talks about Gun's last will and testament, knowing that what she read was the fake one (thanks to Sera). I also want MY to see Gun's cave again where all Keddongie stuff are still there.

But still, I prefer Gun do the first move this time since, as far as I can remember, he never said his real feelings for MY. Now that he knew that he still owns MY's heart, I want to see the new Gun.

And oh, how I am loving the SFCF (Snail Couple Fans Club) namely Manager Tak, Yong and Grandma Wang! Especially Manager Tak, he just knows what his boss wants. He just brought that smile to Gun's face when he said he invited MY to go to LG's office. Love him!

Needless to say, both Jangs knows how to execute each act and just lets you feel what they feel. Thumbs up FTLY Team! Please, I want to have more smiles than tears next week!

props to the actors, director, writers, the crews and production for producing a show of FTLY caliber. its does nthg new but the show feels smooth, the transitions between scene to scene doesnt feel too jumpy or disconnected and the camera work is beautiful too.

Oh the Delmas .... The funny thing is .... The soft, gental, sweet and naive MY would have probably seen all of Gun's antics for what they are .... The this stronger MY has defenses that while allows her to stand up for her self, has also somewhat blinded her to the real Gun. The only one she really does open up to is Young-ja .... Oh the irony .... Which is why if she does feel betrayed, it'll be justified. I just hope she consider what was said .... And consider them now as coming straight from Gun.

There are still several plot points and devices that I hope are used to great effect ....

1) the revelation of the fake divorce agreement
2) gun's man cave
3) mom's love for Gun
4) a final showdown between se-ra and her mom

And one more thing .... Seriously .... They need to do something with the sister's hair ....

Well. I have to say. So, like, the acting was pretty good.

The episode was a bit slow in the beginning but as soon as JH and JNR started to do their thing.... well, the episode got gooder didnt it.

And at the elevator when he bowed and again when she saw him and he saw her seeing him seeing the lollypainting.... well. Yeah that was the goodest.

So. The acting is pretty good I think.

To be less of a fan and more of a critic, the last six episodes have been choppy and chaotic from a storyline standpoint. 20-24 episode dramas almost always run into the same issues, because where do you draw the line between giving TOO many obstacles for the OTP to overcome vs. drawing out a simple storyline thinner and thinner, one more angsty look at a time?

But the acting (always go back to the acting) has been superlative.

Good stuff from both.

I know, I know. The battle of the heart and mind. Even at 16 episodes, dramas in general manage only to flounder before passing out cold and unattractive.

This one pleased both for a while. And the little moments still do it for me Samsooki.

I began as a critic who approved. And then the show ran away with my heart. And now, at the end of episode 16, I'm sopping with emotions, and feel so far involved and invested in the lives of the people created by your 'good' actors, can't think critically anymore. My heart's still on the run. Let's call this the inertia of motion, shall we? Into the lala land of happy endings.

You should know. You've been doing this whole drama thing way longer than me. Where have dramas done it just right?

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Just right?

That's a matter of taste.

No drama that I've seen has done it right from a technical standpoint, from ep 1 to end. Know why? Because television dramas are not the medium where it is possible to do so. What might be perfect on paper immediately gets messed up once actors and directors and producers and fans and advertisers and so on, get involved.

Sometimes, the reverse happens where the actors and the staff make a drama eminently more watchable than what was put to paper initially.

Anyway, the heart of this drama is being saved by the strength of the actors. Ep 16 is crazy good from an acting standpoint.

But all the great acting cannot hide the fact that we've been treading water in a choppy sea for about 6 episodes now, just hanging around until we can get to next plot point.

0

Samsooki, it may be a matter of taste sometimes, but more often it's about making a choice.

You fall in love with a show or the characters or the actors or the whole damn lot. And then, you're so far in, you just decide to stick with loving it, looking past all errors. You decide to adopt the baby as your own. And when the baby poops, well you just pinch your nose, clear up the poop, then go right back to calling it the cutest thing on this planet.

Is it leniency? Complacency? A compromise on my part? All I can tell you is my baby is still very, very cute.

I really really love Jang Hyuk's acting in FTLY. I cannot take my eyes off him whenever he is on screen. Four more episodes to count down to the finale, and I am definitely going to miss this awesome actor after FTLY.

Thanks for recap. This episode was sweet and bitter episode. I cry with Lee Gun and Mi Young. They both love each other so much. The second leads can't change OTP love at all. I'm happy about this. To see Lee Gun and Mi Young try to hide themselves from each other, it so heartbroken feeling. I cry when they say good bye at the elevator. The may lie out but their eye can't. Their eye say I can't let you go. So perfect acting skill from Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara. Love this two so much! I love that Writer-nims and PD-nims can make all episode balance between funny, lovely, and sadly. Don't know what gonna happen next. But I'm really looking forward for everything that will happen in this show. I love this show soooooo much!

I've been thinking a lot about this for so long. Hasn't Gun ever read the fabricated divorce papers MY handed over to him? We have been shown how sentimental Gun is when it is pertaining to his past with MY so I couldn't help thinking how on earth he did not even read it in those 3 years. I couldn't help thinking if the whole truth will be revealed, Sera could be charged with falsification of documents if this was real life hahahaha

@taco: I'm so waiting for that one as well. LG's Lawyer (MY's ex-boss) hasn't handed over the revised divorce agreement yet to MY. Maybe that guy can be the key to some untold secrets? I would wanted MY to also know about the revised divorce agreement so she could have an idea of that disease our noble idiot has. I'm going crazy just thinking how the next episodes would go. I had ideas in mind but I trust the writers that they'll be good to us with 4 more episodes left.

True, that's sad though.

I was hoping they didn't really divorce and that Gun would suspect there was something fishy about the divorce documents Kim Min Young signed.

More surprises in store for next week. But I wish they would make up already! Their body language reads so much anguish and love they have for each other. It's making MY heart ache just to watch them!

Required fields are marked *

I've been thinking about this a lot as well. Various people in the show have indicated/stated that they are divorced. But don't both people have to sign the same document for it to be valid? MY never signed the first one, or the second one that got changed into the third one. In fact, she never even saw the second or third versions. She signed the fourth one from Se Ra, which is a fake. Surely LG didn't sign that one, so how can they be divorced if there isn't a single document that both have signed?

And as you have mentioned, the lawyer must know this - why hasn't he said anything to anyone yet? Maybe he's a member of the SCFC and has been waiting three years for the right moment to announce to them that they've never been divorced! Seriously though, how could the lawyer not have cleared up the misunderstanding by now?

DeeCee, yeah, I forgot counting him in on SCFC. Haha! But I'm still glad that one hasn't been spoiled yet. They should settle their feelings first for each other (I'm particularly referring to Gunie-ssi here) rather than just learning they are still married (I can imagine Gun just jumping for joy and tell that to MY like he's blackmailing her). Maybe that one will be revealed once MY learns that LG really loves him. She has always been confused on LG's act of kindness towards her because he has never said it. Maybe, Lawyer and Dr. Moon will spill the beans next week? Can we fast forward the days? Argh! Can't wait!

0

DeeCee, I forgot to count him in on SCFC. Haha! But I'm still glad that the story haven't reached there yet. They should settle their feelings first for each other (especially Gun) rather than just knowing that afterall, they are still married (I could just imagine Gun jumping for joy, telling it to MY as if blackmailing her. Haha!) So maybe that can happen once MY learns that Gun loves him. She told Gun a couple of times that he always confuse her with him being kind to her. Maybe Lawyer and Dr. Moon will spill the beans next week? That I think will help to clear things for MY what happened 3 years ago. I also hope MY can have a tour at Gun's man-cave (that should happen.. Please..). Wondering though ifhiw could it happen.. Maybe because of Grandma Wong? Argh! Can we fast forward the days??? I can't hardly wait!

I don't think they sign the divorce paper. The lawyer mentions about alimony that may be a suggestion to her to sign the divorce paper, and get the money for her business. However, MT does not want to talk about it, so the conversation is cut short.

I think next week will be a must seen ep. because I believe MT is going to confront Gun about the abortion on the fake divorce paper.

At some point if they use this oops-we-never-divorce it'd be worse than amnesia trope. Though this was true in the TW version. Cos gunnie was set on letting her go n him not divorcing her in the first place n doing that knowingly is grrrr. Though I think sera needs to be called out on the fake version grrrr grrr grrr

These few eps I'm not sure what we got. Other than establishing the physical / time distance did little to increase the emotional distance.

Both share an unshared grief. And I think I'd prefer they got to know each one on a new page.

But gunnie had been showing he's not grown up (in her eyes) while in his eyes she's totally transformed for the better.

In this light I like the TW version better :)

Ok. Me still thinks they divorced :p

Just out of curiosity, how is it that MY never has a heart-to-heart talk, or spending time with her Mom since her discovering of Gun-Mom relationship?.

At this point, I am so eager to indulge in anything heart-warming after so many heart-breaking moments that I’d wish to hear what Mom feels witnessing the pain and loneliness in her son, Gun in all these years. That ought open MY’s heart and shed some light into this awful sadness.

I feel so much for Gun. Granted, he is digging his own grave, but he has always been the one protecting, giving up so much of his own happiness for someone else’s sake, from losing his love of 6-year, to giving up his Keddongie, to ultimately letting go the love of his life, MY. Be it noble idiocy or pragmatic altruism, he choses to sacrifice so much of his own only to become a lonely fool to his love. That’s why to her, he “is not taking responsibility for giving his heart away so carelessly”…Awwww the pain…the pain…When is it going to end?…
I want them to be happy, bed scenes and pregnant before the end of the drama!

Thank you for pointing it out.

Everyone has been furious with Gunnie, calling him selfish and immature and all .. He has been the one making sacrifices all along .. Whether it's Sera, GD or MY. Letting go isn't any easier than losing. They're both suffering, but if she's keeping her distance to protect herself, he's putting on a show to protect her, it's not even for himself. From our perspective, he's a damn fool right now, but his heartache is no joke.

Snail couple, you're taking your time with this and it's fine, we can survive one more week of frustration. But YOU'D BETTER BRING IT ON THE FINAL WEEK, and I mean BRING IT. EPIC CONFESSIONS, STEAMING HOT KISSES, and then more cute than eps 6, 7 8, 9 and 10 combined. Understood ?

Lol. With FTLY, I read all these comments, and I swear to god I feel like I must have written them myself. Just yesterday I was ranting about this very same issue over the comments section. That to your first and second paragraph.

Your third paragraph. The part about him not taking responsibility and all. Well, I wish I had written that. I did think of it. And would have were I a better version of myself. I agree with you, but I still want to see uri Gunnie get some sense punched into his head. Through the nose. Preferably by a very snaily hand or two.

Nuff said. Your comment makes my heart bleed. Let's weep together before the light shines again on this drama. Which will be soon, right?
