Marriage Not Dating: Episode 10

The line between what’s real and what’s pretend continues to blur, as Jang-mi and Ki-tae start to realize that they may have genuine feelings for each other…but the problem is that everyone else is beginning to notice as well. It’s one thing to be willing to go to great lengths to get what you want, but when others start being hurt and the innocent white lie turns into a giant uncontrollable monster, maybe it’s time to re-evaluate if what you want is really worth it.

EPISODE 10: “The thing you should keep hidden until the very last moment”

Ki-tae, his grandmother, and his aunt sit in the living room looking nervous as Jang-mi and Mom have an epic stare-down. Jang-mi asks Mom, “Does this really have special meaning for you, Mother?” Mom swears that it (whatever “it” is) is very special and should be treated as precious. Suddenly Jang-mi grabs a huge rock, raises it over her head, and smashes it down onto the table as Ki-tae’s entire family looks on in horror.

A few days earlier, we rejoin Ki-tae and Jang-mi mid-kiss. Jang-mi looks startled when Ki-tae swoops in, but soon her eyes flutter closed.

Having gone for help, Yeo-reum finds Hoon-dong drunk and alone in his room and tries to wake him, and Hoon-dong suddenly sits up and grabs Yeo-reum for a long passionate kiss. HAHA. Yeo-reum manages to flail his way out of it, and carries Hoon-dong outside to dunk him in a barrel of freezing water.

Yeo-reum fills Hoon-dong in regarding Hyun-hee’s disappearance on the way back to the stuck car, but Hoon-dong is slow to understand why Hyun-hee is at a temple and why he should care. Yeo-reum gets to the car in time to witness the kiss, and can only stand stunned until Hoon-dong’s loud voice causes Ki-tae and Jang-mi to jump apart. It’s pretty obvious to everyone that Yeo-reum saw the kiss, though nobody says a word about it.

Hoon-dong finds Hyun-hee praying at the temple, and starts a weak apology. Hyun-hee says that this “gift” may be unexpected, but it’s still precious, and offers Hoon-dong one chance to bail if he wants. Shockingly, Hoon-dong instead hugs Hyun-hee and cries that he’s sorry for her, that it had to be someone like him.

Hyun-hee sobs that she’s scared, and Hoon-dong promises to take care of her, and I actually believe that his tears are genuine. But Hoon-dong is still Hoon-dong, and their embrace changes tone quickly and he starts to take their clothes off. At least until they’re busted by a monk.

Back at work, Jang-mi and Hyun-hee can’t help but be distracted, and their manager takes them to task. Hyun-hee is all smiles as she tells Jang-mi that she’ll be quitting soon to get married, and Hoon-dong will be speaking to his mother soon. But Jang-mi has met Hoon-dong’s mother and knows it won’t be that easy.

Cut to: Hoon-dong on the street outside his house in only his socks and tiger boxers. HAHAHA. Poor Hoon-dong, I don’t think those half-assed martial arts moves are fooling any of the passers-by.

Hoon-dong’s mom beelines for the department store to confront Hyun-hee, who innocently greets her. Jang-mi rushes over to shield her friend and takes the brunt of Mom’s anger, who calls her a stalker and accuses Hyun-hee of trapping her son on purpose. The scene draws a crowd, and Hyun-hee and Hoon-dong’s mother both leave. The manager warns Jang-mi not to bring personal issues to work again or there will be consequences.

Hoon-dong’s and Ki-tae’s mothers discuss the situation. Hoon-dong’s mother is furious that Jang-mi lost out with her son then went after his friend, then sicced her friend on her baby boy. Well, I guess it does sound bad if you say it like that. Ki-tae’s mother advises her to do what she’s doing – aggressively plan the wedding, and the girl’s true motivations will come out.

Hoon-dong happily tells Hyun-hee that his family wants to meet her parents to talk about their wedding, but Hyun-hee says her parents are on a cruise for a few months and aren’t available. She says she’s always been independent and her parents would probably want her to do this on her own, but combined with her shifty expression, this makes me feel this is just more lies from her.

Jang-mi, who’s been sitting with them, gets up to leave but comes face-to-face with Ki-tae walking into the restaurant. He looks thrilled to see her, but she reels in horror and runs back to the table. Ki-tae joins them and she pops back up and flees, telling Yeo-reum she’ll wait outside for him to finish his shift.

Ki-tae follows her to say that if she keeps acting like this, she may as well announce the kiss. She grabs his face and manhandles him off the street, while Hoon-dong and Hyun-hee comment that they spend a lot of time together alone at Ki-tae’s house, and have been acting strange lately. Yeo-reum tells them that he lives at Ki-tae’s house now too and that he and Ki-tae snuggle at night. Aaaand now Hoon-dong thinks Ki-tae is gay.

Jang-mi drags Ki-tae all the way to his office, and he complains that she won’t let him talk. She says it’s that mouth that’s the problem, and Ki-tae is all, “Why, does your heart flutter when you see my lips?” Hee. Jang-mi admits that she’s been avoiding him because she can’t pretend nothing happened.

She flat-out asks Ki-tae if he likes her, and his giant grin is precious. But Jang-mi assumes he’s laughing at her and relaxes that he hasn’t really gotten serious about her. She rattles on about how she was nervous that the lines had blurred, but she’s relieved to know it all really was an act, and anyway she has Yeo-reum, and and and… she’s completely missing the fact that Ki-tae has gone very quiet. He finally reminds her that she’s the one who crossed all the lines he drew.

Jang-mi asks why Ki-tae kissed her, and he bluffs that it was to shut her up because she was talking too much. He accuses her of liking it too much, she calls him a bad kisser (oh honey, we all saw it and NOPE), and they both agree that of course it meant nothing at all, nope not even a little bit, uh-uh.

Jang-mi’s grand flouncing exit is ruined when Yeo-reum is on the other side of the door and scares ten years off her life. She asks how he knew she was here, and he leans in close to whisper that he knows everything she does, no matter where she is. They leave while Ki-tae fixates on the “bad kisser” comment, making thoughtful kissy faces to himself. Cute cute.

Ki-tae’s mom meets with Jang-mi’s mom and non-apologizes by saying she’s sorry that Jang-mi got upset, but she supposes she took her words in the wrong way. Then she does the same thing to Jang-mi’s mom, saying that she understands that she was upset to see Ki-tae with his ex-fiancee but it’s just that they’re still so close. She says that she hopes that her son will make Jang-mi happy but gosh, he tried so hard the first time and failed, and she just doesn’t see him trying that hard this time around. Pretty sure she just invented a whole new level of passive-aggression.

Jang-mi’s mom wonders to herself how this got all twisted, and tells Ki-tae’s mom that she should have helped with the wedding plans more, vowing to do her part from here on out. She takes on duties in spite of Ki-tae’s mom’s protests, realizing internally that she’s still being manipulated but not quite sure how to retaliate.

Jang-mi and Yeo-reum go for a walk, and when a cyclist comes too close, Yeo-reum grabs Jang-mi’s waist and pulls her in close. Uncomfortable, she tries to pull away but he doesn’t let her, saying he wants to kiss her. He leans in but her phone rings, and she shoves him away to freak out that someone is calling her, OMG, what strange timing!

It’s Ki-tae, and Yeo-reum snatches the phone to tell him that Jang-mi is too flustered to talk because she’s concentrating on him. He refuses to let Ki-tae talk to Jang-mi, so Ki-tae tells Yeo-reum that her mom is choosing a wedding date.

Mom drags Ki-tae to a fortuneteller, who says that Ki-tae doesn’t have much luck and that people avoid him, ha. Jang-mi bursts in, and the fortuneteller immediately says that luck follows her, and suddenly Ki-tae looks more interested.

The fortuneteller says that he’ll regret it if he loses Jang-mi, and people will tell him how stupid he is, especially since she has probably even saved his life once already. Then he starts to go on about how sexually compatible they are, and Ki-tae’s face is priceless as he agrees that of course the sex is incredible, earning a jab from Jang-mi. Dude, her mom is right there.

The fortuneteller suddenly turns angry, and yells that if they aren’t going to do this marriage right, they shouldn’t do it at all. Jang-mi and Ki-tae look nervous but luckily, Mom thinks he’s talking about how she wasn’t helping plan anything, and vows to do things right from now on. Whew.

On their way out, Jang-mi fusses that she thought Mom was against the marriage, but Ki-tae is all smiles as he fawns over Mom. He offers to take her to eat but since she’s heard “that thing” between them is so great, she says she’ll leave them alone, and she saunters off saucily as Ki-tae blows her kisses. Love it.

Ki-tae and Jang-mi walk home, and she says that she’s tired of this and wants to end it. She whines that because of him she’s lying to everyone, and even the fortuneteller told them to end it – but now Ki-tae says the guy was a charlatan.

In an echo of the scene with Yeo-reum, a biker gets too close, but now it’s Jang-mi who grabs Ki-tae and pulls him close, and this time they’re both affected by the contact. Jang-mi shoves away and says that these kinds of things keep happening when he’s around, and Ki-tae asks for some time to end everything.

The moms go shopping, and Ki-tae’s mother manipulates Jang-mi’s mother into buying the expensive wedding gifts a second time since Jang-mi returned them. She stunned to hear that Ki-tae’s mom is also expecting her to provide a dowry and more wedding gifts, but she’s locked into agreeing or risk looking bad again.

She runs home and gives her husband her best aegyo to get his attention (Dad: “I’ll talk when it sounds like talking!” HAHA) and Dad is horrified to hear everything that Ki-tae’s mother expects. He offers to get a loan with the house as collateral, but Mom says she already applied for one and they also need one on the restaurant. When he correctly guesses that she’s already done that too, he chases her out of the restaurant.

Later Jang-mi finds Mom getting deliberately drunk and gripes at her for putting the house and restaurant up for collateral, but Mom just says she doesn’t want her to feel ashamed in front of Ki-tae’s mom. She shows Jang-mi an old article she found, where Ki-tae’s father gave his mother a huge pink diamond ring, and she had said she would someday give the ring to her daughter-in-law.

Jang-mi’s mother says that Jang-mi will be receiving that ring and that she doesn’t want her to live like her mother. Jang-mi thought her parents married for love, but Mom cries and says love isn’t everything, and that marrying Ki-tae will give her daughter everything she couldn’t. Awww, Mom. *sniffle*

Jang-mi angrily confronts Ki-tae with the article, saying that because of that ring, her parents have gotten loans on everything and that she can’t keep doing this. But Ki-tae’s face noticeably hardens when he sees the photos, and it’s obvious he’s not listening.

Finally Ki-tae says in a hollow voice, “Ask her for the ring.“ If his mother doesn’t give it to her, it will show that she’s against the marriage. He tells Jang-mi to actually say that to his mother when she asks. Jang-mi objects, because what if she does give her the ring, but Ki-tae is adamant that she won’t. Jang-mi agrees, since it would be a clean way out of the fake engagement.

So Jang-mi calls Ki-tae’s mother and boldly asks for the pink diamond ring, saying that she knows that it will mean her acceptance into the Gong family. For once Ki-tae’s mom is rendered speechless, and insists on discussing it in person that weekend. Jang-mi is relieved that this is almost over, but Ki-tae’s expression is very worrying.

Jang-mi and Hyun-hee go out, and Jang-mi drunkenly complains that she doesn’t understand what’s happening with this whole ring deal since she’s not really getting married. She doesn’t know why she feels upset, but Hyun-hee does – it’s because she’s started to like Ki-tae for real. The more Jang-mi insists it’s not like that, the more Hyun-hee just smiles knowingly, and tells her that she’s probably upset because it’s about to be over and she won’t have reason to see Ki-tae again. Jang-mi blurts out that she’s got Yeo-reum, and anyway she only kissed Ki-tae that one ti…whoops.

Hoon-dong and Ki-tae drink and have pretty much the exact same conversation – except Hoon-dong thinks Ki-tae is in love with Yeo-reum. Hoon-dong takes offense that Ki-tae thought he wouldn’t notice, then adorably asks how he can help. Ki-tae says just to act like he knows nothing, which prompts Hoon-dong to ask if it’s one-sided, on top of everything else.

Ki-tae staggers home to find Jang-mi asleep on his couch, and he watches her sleep for a moment. He gently touches her hair, which wakes her, and she sleepily asks him, “Why isn’t it me? The ring. Why can’t I receive it?”

Jang-mi asks Ki-tae why, when her mother is willing to give everything for them, can’t she receive one small ring from his mother? She thinks that she doesn’t see her as worthy of such a valuable thing, but he says that’s not the reason. He’s reluctant to explain, but Jang-mi demands to know.

She’s wondered why his mother is so against their getting married and she thinks this may be the key. She asks with tears in her eyes if it’s money, or her family, or if it’s just her. But that’s not the problem, and Ki-tae answers sadly, “That ring…isn’t my mother’s ring.”

Three years ago, Ki-tae and Se-ah had gone to a jeweler’s to shop for their wedding rings, and ran into his father buying the pink diamond ring. Se-ah sees the ring and assumes it’s a wedding renewal ring for Ki-tae’s mother, but Ki-tae notices his father acting cagey and evasive. He rushes out, dropping the card on his way, and Ki-tae sees that it was addressed to “J.”

Later Ki-tae’s family gathers for the article photo shoot, and Se-ah makes the mistake of mentioning the ring in front of everyone, putting Dad in an awkward position. Ki-tae takes his father aside, gives him the card, and tells him that he knows “J” isn’t his mother. He starts to get upset, but his mother finds them and tells him to hide his facial expression and voice, or everyone will find out. Ki-tae is devastated to know that his father is a cheater and his mother knew.

Back in the present, Jang-mi wonders how his mother could wear that ring that she knew was for another woman, for all the world to see, but Ki-tae says that’s why – because everyone can see. Tears roll down his face as he gasps that they can’t let anyone see their real feelings.

Jang-mi seems to suddenly understand Ki-tae so much more, and she gently takes his hand and tells him that he can show her his real feelings, since she’s not real. They stand in that moment, neither speaking, and neither of them notices that Se-ah and Yeo-reum have walked in.

Se-ah breaks the silence and Jang-mi drops Ki-tae’s hand, and Se-ah leaves while Yeo-reum stays with a hurt look on his face. He says that she shouldn’t have let him find out (about her feelings for Ki-tae) – she should have known how hard he was trying not to know.

That weekend Jang-mi and Ki-tae drive to his family’s home to talk to his mother about the ring, the atmosphere in the car strained and silent. Jang-mi thinks to herself that this is for the best, that it’s dangerous to keep this up, but wonders why she feels unsettled. When they arrive, Ki-tae says that since this is the last time, she has his permission to make the biggest scene she can. She says she will, for their sake and also for Yeo-reum’s sake, which gives Ki-tae pause before he ushers her inside.

Ki-tae, Jang-mi, Aunt Mi-jung, and Grandma all sit in uncomfortable silence while Mom casually cleans a trio of large ornamental stones. Grandma asks if Jang-mi is really here for the pink diamond, which Jang-mi confirms, and Mom blandly says that she finds her request quite bold. Jang-mi says she’s asking for it so she that can feel secure that she’s truly welcome in the family. Mom asks why she thinks the ring will do that, and Ki-tae speaks up – he gives Mom a loaded glare as he says that it’s because the ring is so special to her.

Of course, Mom can’t give her the ring, because right now Dad and his mistress are together and we see that the mistress is wearing the pink diamond ring. It’s a slam-dunk for Jang-mi and Ki-tae, since if Mom can’t give her the ring, they have proof she disapproves, and they can call the fake engagement off.

When Mom hesitates, Jang-mi starts to say that it’s obvious she doesn’t accept her, but Mom suddenly slides a ring box across the table to her. Everyone looks shocked, not knowing how Mom got the pink diamond. Jang-mi asks if the ring truly has special meaning for her, and Mom says that it is and asks her to treat it as precious.

Jang-mi takes the ring and sets it on the table, then suddenly grabs one of the stone ornaments and raises it over her head. Before anyone can react, she smashes it down onto the ring. Everyone gasps in shock, but when Jang-mi lifts the stone, we see that the pink diamond is dust – it was a fake.

Jang-mi states that she knows now what Ki-tae’s mother thinks of her, and she understands that she’s been rejected. But she takes this last chance to ask her to let go of Ki-tae, and not to force a marriage on him that he doesn’t want just because it looks good to others.

Mom asks Ki-tae what his intention was to have Jang-mi ask for the ring, for the first time showing some emotion as her voice starts to shake. Jang-mi says that they just wanted to hear her honest feelings, since her real marriage is so different from what’s shown in the magazines.

Mom tells Jang-mi to shut up, that she doesn’t know anything about it. Jang-mi bravely says that she knows Mom is very hurt, and has been having a hard time, and doesn’t want Ki-tae to be stuck in the same loveless marriage she’s had. Her voice gets high and strained as she says she understands that Mom wants Ki-tae to be happy, but that she needs to be happy first, and not just look happy.

Mom tries to hold her carefully neutral expression, but her iron control slips and tears start to fall. Grandma tries to interrupt but Jang-mi has one more thing to say. “The person who made Ki-tae so alone is you, Mother.”

Jang-mi leaves and Ki-tae follows her. Mom gets up without a word and goes to her room, and for the first time in probably many years, gives in to her emotions and cries great, wracking sobs of pain.

Jang-mi cries outside, but when Ki-tae finds her she slaps on a happy expression and asks how her final performance went. When he doesn’t answer, she says he should say he’s grateful, but he thinks to himself that if he does, it could be the last time he talks to her. Jang-mi says that this was the last time, and holds out her hand for him to shake.

Ki-tae silently takes her hand, then pulls her in for a hug. She pats his back and tells him that he should start showing his emotions, “Although I won’t be beside you.” Ki-tae finally, finally admits to himself that he wants to stay by her side, even if he can’t say it out loud. Crying even as she tries to sound brave, Jang-mi says, “Finally our roller coaster wedding scam is at an end.”

Ki-tae still can’t speak, but only holds her tighter for a long moment, until a voice from behind them gasps, “What did you say?!” They both turn to see Grandma standing there, having just heard Jang-mi admit that their engagement was fake the whole time.

COMMENTS

I have to say, I’m firmly in the “this show just gets better and better” camp, and this episode is no exception. We’ve finally gotten to the point where real feelings can’t be hidden or ignored any longer, and at the same time we’re learning why Ki-tae and his family are so afraid of showing their real feelings, and I could just eat it up with a spoon.

I’m especially enjoying the way the show is giving us more information about Ki-tae’s parents, and their actions and reactions. The reasons behind their behavior are so real and accessible – it’s a situation that can (and does) happen to anyone, and the different ways they choose to protect themselves and their feelings are very understandable. Often I have trouble when shows introduce things like birth secrets and backstories where someone’s mom killed someone’s dad or whatever. That stuff is certainly shocking and makes for interesting television, but that kind of thing just doesn’t happen to normal people; so in a way, when a drama brings in plot points that I can’t relate to in a real-life way, even while I enjoy the story for being shocking and dramatic, it creates a barrier between the characters and myself as a viewer. They become less “people” and more “characters in a drama,” so I lose some of my connection to the characters and I’m just not as emotionally invested.

But a husband who cheats and a wife that focuses so much energy on showing the world a perfect family, to the point that her own children even become emotionally stunted…now that’s something I can see happening to normal people, and it actually draws me IN to the characters and makes me care about what happens to them. Last week in my recap I devoted a large portion of my comments to complaining that Ki-tae’s mother was losing my sympathy. While we saw some vulnerability in her at the beginning of the show (through Jang-mi’s eyes), she had recently lost that relatability as the wife whose husband was stepping out on her and was just trying to keep it together, and becoming the two-dimensional drama mother-in-law who tries to break up the leads for no reason other than the girl being of lower class.

But in this episode, we got to see exactly why she objects to Jang-mi; it has nothing to do with Jang-mi, and everything to do with her fear that her son will end up alone or in a loveless marriage. With her strong reservations that the engagement happened so quickly, she was thrown into panic that her son would make a rash decision and marry without real love, and I can see why Mom defaulted to Se-ah, who does still care for Ki-tae. What Mom fails to understand is that it’s not only important that Ki-tae marries a woman who loves him, but that he also loves the woman he marries.

I can also see how this situation has made Ki-tae how he is, because he discovered his father’s infidelity right about the time he and Se-ah were gearing up to get married. That had to throw him for a loop and make him view marriage with suspicion, so that when she crossed that line and disregarded his wishes, it became about so much more than the house – it became, “Can I trust this woman with my heart?” Someone who violates your boundaries before you even get married, is someone who very likely can’t be trusted to have your marriage’s best interests at heart, especially when that person just flat-out says that they will have no compunctions with using information about your family to get her way once you’re married. It’s no surprise that Ki-tae just bailed on marriage altogether.

So now we know, for the most part, what makes Jang-mi and Ki-tae the way they are, why one is so afraid of being alone and the other is terrified of commitment. But we’ve also reached the point at which they finally admit to themselves that there’s something more than obligation and friendship going on between them. Now we get to watch them try to find their way to each other, which is always my favorite part of any drama. I’ll admit I’m surprised that it will probably be Ki-tae to reach out first, since he’s the first to admit to himself that he wants to stay by Jang-mi’s side while she’s still thinking that her relationship with Yeo-reum is her primary concern. Jang-mi is such a caring, loving person, so I was expecting that she would realize her feelings first and have to get grumpy Ki-tae to come out of his shell. I’m doubly interested that that expectation has been turned on its ear, and dying to see how the show makes this happen, since it never does things in a way that we expect.

Given how clumsy and adorable Ki-tae can be when he’s trying to be charming, I think we’d best brace ourselves for a whole lot of cute headed our way. Our leads still have a lot of emotional ground to cover too, because there are still holes in their backstories that I’m sure are important. And I’m loving how the show continues to only dole out crucial information to us as viewers as the characters learn it, as I mentioned in a previous recap. We only know what the characters know, and we learn it just as they learn it (such as hearing the story of the ring as Ki-tae tells it to Jang-mi, so we find out at the same time and in the same way as Jang-mi does), and it makes those reveals so delicious because it’s not just us learning these things, it’s the characters too. It’s such a great subtle way to draw the viewers into the story, to have us experience things the same way the characters do.

Keep it coming Show. I’ve got my spoon ready and I’m hungry!

Sobbing. What a great scene. That's the Jang Mi I know and love. Looking out for both Mom and Ki Tae, she is so part of the family. I love, but at the same time it is so sad, how Jang Mi is the only person who gets Mom. It makes my blood boil how NO ONE in the family is on Mom's side. Her son shuns her, and her mother-in-law and sister-in-law never bother to comfort her even when they know full well her husband is cheating on her. She is literally all alone, at least until Jang Mi becomes her daughter-in-law, then she will finally have someone to confide in.

I love when Ki Tae told Jang Mi the truth about the ring. Slowly but surely letting her into his life, revealing secrets that Se Ah doesn't even know. (Did Se Ah overhear, by the way?) This is why he wants to live alone. This is why he never wants to get married. And this is why Grandma says it's all her fault -- because she gave birth to his cheating father. His father is such an asshole. Thank goodness it was Grandma who caught them because I fully expect her to support our couple, instead of Mom who caught them, even though she suspects they were fake all along. I wanted to assure Grandma, "Don't worry. They're in love with each other, so it's not really fake."

I wish Hyun Hee's pregnancy test had false positive results. I know people get married every day over unplanned pregnancies, which is not a solid foundation for marriage, but besides the fact that Hoon Dong doesn't even love her, they haven't even known each other for that long. What was he thinking trying to have sex in a monastery!? I will never understand why she was so attracted to him in the first place knowing how awful he treated Jang Mi, unless she is in it for his money. I get the feeling she is embarrassed of her working class parents, which led her to make up a profession for them and decline the family meeting. Every member of our cast has parental issues (cheating, fighting, abandoning). But most of all, I wish Hyun Hee would be a better friend to Jang Mi instead of always making everything about herself. "Are you mad at me for being with Hoon Dong oppa? Why didn't you tell me about your fake engagement?" Jang Mi has real problems and could use a real friend. I'm so relieved she has Ki Tae.

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!

The Hyun-hee Hoon-dong pairing is just catastrophic.

Unfairness to HD, and lovelessness aside ... these 2 weak to the core characters in a relationship is just catastrophic. And parenthood together? Poor unborn baby.

Especially given HD's unsavory track record, his general brainlessness (whatever comes upon ANY idiot to strip casually for sex in a temple? ... much less TWO idiots) ... what hope is there for any longterm viability of such a relationship?

Well, she told him up front that she wasn't a nice girl. That she got pregnant after she got him rip-roaring drunk, then named her unborn baby "Luxury" sheds some light on what she meant by that.

At the shop she was talking about getting 'promoted quickly' before she's out-of-season and is sent to the discount outlet. I couldn't tell from the subs whether she was talking about literal job promotion, or about quickly marrying-up while she's young. I kinda assumed it was the latter. Is that right?

I felt it was poetic justice - the mom was so against Jang Mi because of her "unsuitability," and when the mom drives off Jang Mi she gets someone quite a bit worse.
This show doles out the irony in large, lovely, bittersweet dollops - like how mom's careful, well-reasoned choice for Ki Tae's bride is the worst one possible, and how Ki Tae's fortress of solitude keeps bringing everyone together.

I like "luxury" better - far much more than "dog poo" no matter is colloquial or whatever...

guess I just simply couldn't appreciate the morale and the acting in Fated to love you and finding each scene something not right but here..... in this roller coaster marriage not dating, I am loving every single part of it no matter how silly it can be...

setting aside the HoonDong+HyunHee perversion...this episode had me busting a gut over HoonDong! I finally appreciate his acting through this episode.

That scene of him in tiger boxers+socks at the front gate...LMAO!

The HoonDong+YeoRuem KISS...was epic! JinWoon fans around the world are making GIFs of that scene for wallpaper!

But the scene when YeoRuem tells HoonDong+HyunHee that he lives with GiTae and they snuggle and then HoonDong now thinks GiTae is GAY....hats off to the writers on that!

HoonDong raised the comedic bar in this episode.

I'm not even positive she's pregnant. She could have had someone else pee on that stick and drove up. She clearly states she is looking for a way out of the department store job.

Yep, I got the uncomfortable feeling she was lying through her teeth this whole episode. I really hope it turns out to be fake actually, cause then we can deal with the fall out and maybe finally get some insight into Hyun Hee's character.

From the scenes it should be obvious the writers are doing this on purpose but I don't really know Korean culture so I can say it definitively..but it's not even subtle at all how hh is portray so I'm jus waiting for the crash to occur unless they start writing off her character

I don't think she's actually pregnant , it's all a lie because first she brought that test from her handbag, it was already open and then she obviously let it in tve bathroom , then again she said she doesn't have any morning sickness yet , add to that the fact that she doesn't want them to meet her family and to rush out the wedding ! Ah I think she's the character I hate the most from the start .

hahaha..she manipulated the entire scenrio..even kt caught on that she wanted to be found since most kdrama the phone is never lock..yet kt even mention that the phone is unlock which blew my mind..lmao..everything seem perfectly rehearse from finding the text, phone and then the temple..leaving it right on the toilet seat?!?! who does that..but its funny how she seems to be getting away with everything she does since she is a side character..

I'm pretty sure HyunHee isn't ashamed of 'inadequate' parents, she's ashamed of having no parents. The fact that Jangmi has also been told about leads me to think she's an orphan and hiding (which makes sense if she wants to marry up, since having no 'blood family' is still very looked down upon in Korea).

Required fields are marked *

Totally agree! My mom and I watched this and both assumed she must be an orphan, since there is still some level of taboo associated with having no parents in Korea (which really needs to change because what fault do the kids have?).

That being said, I think Hyunhee is the most useless character in the drama. If you took her out, nothing much would really change at this point. And I feel like that about Yeoreum to some extent... I guess he's cute, but I feel like he's in the drama just so that there is "the other guy" element. Maybe if a better actor played the character, I would buy it more.

His fake smile and wooden demeanor have given Yeoreum an unnaturally creepy vibe that does not fit with this drama at all. It's as if a drug dealer extra from Heartless City has wandered over to this set and is helping himself to food and a few stolen kisses to pass the time.

That would make this show even better.

0

Creepy is the same vibe I get from him. I have never liked his character (partly because of his poor acting). He is the only one in this drama that I think is seriously out of place.

0

The show's cast includes Lee Yeon-kyung as Hyun-hee's mother. Not that this necessarily means anything...every orphan does have a mother and father. :-)

I don't think that when grandma said "it is all my fault" she was referring giving birth to his hidous son. I think the mistress was the one he wanted the marry, but she did not let her son marry her and forced him to marry Gi-Tae's mom. We had seen in couple of scenes where the mistress iwas trying to convince herself, love has different forms and there does not need to be marriage for a love to be valid. Also, I think that that's why grandma is supportive of jang-mi and Gitae's marriage. She does not want mom to do the same mistake she did and let Gi-tae marry for love.

Usually I can't wait for Friday coz looking forward to the weekend! now, Friday seemed so far away... waiting for Jang-mi & Gi-Tae!! ;)

lovely MVs being posted on youtube and I can't believe myself that for once I re-watch a drama again and again! Yes, I am that bad, that I hardly bother to watch again any story I have watched but this one, goodness... especially after reading comments and observation by you viewers! interesting and catchy observations!! keep me busy till Friday :(

btw, I also watch Yeon Woojin (Gi-tae) in the short drama "Just an ordinary love story" and can't help to imagine him with Han Groo - the chemistry of JM & GT is just amazing!!
Woojin really performed well as GT and we feel the "human" & real life situation he is in and the more we get to know him and his family, the more we can understand his cockiness of his belief to live alone now crumbling with Jang-mi's existence beside him.
Fighting JM & GT !!!

yeah yes yep! me again...

since I have been crazy enough of re-watching this drama here & there, I noticed that:

1. Gi-tae's clothing = scheme color is BLACK & WHITE
why is that?

quite symbolic maybe to reflect how he viewed his life is?
clean, no color but its either black or white?
no matter if he is wearing
a. a collared shirt -it will be stripes black & white, or
b. v-neck tshirt under his jacket, weaher plain white or plain black,
c. any shirt - even with designed like in the last episode 10, plain white with motif design in black (looked like tattoo :) lol )
d. His suit - in episode 8, where he stole Jang-mi away from picnicking with HY, and he still wore the same when Jang-mi ran away in the wedding gown and chasing them to the beach
e. His striped black & white shirt with white shorts when he stole the kiss when HR went away to get Hoon-dong
f. in soooooo many other scenes.

(Hoon-dong has the most colorful outfit!)

2. Se-ha trying to get a baby with GT
I didnt check the law in South Korea, but when reading thru the recap on "Bad Couple" - see episode 1, Hae-soo (sorry, forgot the name of the female lead, Hae-soo is in IOTL right?) wasn't allowed to get the sperm donor coz she's single!! ie: unmarried woman is not allowed to receive sperm donor or to have baby tube!!
so is that why SH tried this scam against GT?? anyway, it's a sickening plot on her. Poor girl, so pretty and yet given such role :(

3. Splashing water, drinks, wine etc onto another person... oh emmmmm geeee.... I think I have been watching similar thingey in so many variotions!

a. MND - in episode 1, Gi-tae being prepared to receive the splash! remember?? that is funny and he deserved it! lol
b. MND - again to GT from Jang-mi when HR brought the raspberry juice to the car - remember? that was so sudden and we can see like an automated reaction by JM as provoked by GT and witnessed by GT's mommy!

c. then.... in Fated to love you.... ah disgusting when Se-ra's friend spashed water on Mi-young during the charity dinner! that scene is uncalled for and I felt unnecessary just to show how mad a friend is towards another woman?

d. I may sound bias coz in another scene, this time in "It's ok, that's love - IOTL" (btw, the RAW of episode 5 is released now on dramabay!!) , at the bedroom door - double splash by Hae-soo then by Jae-yul...

ok ok.... enough rambling

to k-drama addicts.... happy watching!!!

dreaming on the next episode of Jang-mi & Gi-tae!

Thanks for the recap!!!

You guys. This is seriously unhealthy. I'm really getting concerned about how obsessed I am with this drama. I freakin' loved this episode.

I know that some people wrote on the last recap about how they wished that Ki-tae had just talked about his feelings with Jang-mi instead of kissing her, but I actually like how things went. A part of it is just my love for the fun stage when they're both flustered and denying their feelings, but the main reason why I'm glad is because I think if Ki-tae suddenly just told her how he felt about her it would almost be like skipping a huge step for me. I like that it isn't an easy fix with Ki-tae and think that before he can even think about being honest with his feelings for Jang-mi and pursuing her, he needs to first let out the emotions and the truths that he's been forced to keep hidden all this time. That's why this episode did everything I wanted it to and then some. Their heart-to-heart was so lovely and rewarding in and of itself, but then that confrontation with Ki-tae's mom at the end and their hug! They seriously took their relationship to whole new levels this episode and I can't wait for more. No, I mean it. I seriously can't wait!

Also, it needs to be said. Everyone has called out Se-Ah and the mom countless times, but Ki-tae's father is by far THE WORST CHARACTER EVER. Seriously. ALL of his family's issues are his fault and he's just off with his mistress! I mean, does he even understand the concept of caring for other's happiness?! This is his family! I can't understand how he can just go around smiling as if he doesn't give a s**t about how his son or his wife feel. I hope that Ki-tae's mom breaks free, and that Jang-mi's influence and Ki-tae's growth over the next few episodes lead to a real shake-up of the priorities in that household. I especially would like to see Ki-tae take the initiative to break through his mother's walls because only then do I think they'll both finally begin to heal.

Some favorite moments of mine:

1. PFFFFFFT. Any scene involving Hoon-dong's misunderstanding about Ki-tae and Yeo-Reum!!! SO FUNNY. Especially when Ki-tae was reaching for him, the sound effects were priceless! Please let this be an ongoing misunderstanding! It's funnier when you consider the fact that Hoon-dong is the one who kissed Yeo-reum this episode LOL! Honestly, all of Hoon-dong's scenes were hilarious this episode :D

2. Ki-tae's face when the Shaman told him about his and Jang-mi's sexual affinity!!! (Seriously, though. both our leads are fantastic when it comes to all their reaction shots. I love it). Anyway, now that they know, shouldn't they get down to business? ;) Also loved his outraged reaction to Jang-mi calling him a bad kisser and then his practicing afterwords!

3. Love the reversal with Jang-mi saving Ki-tae from the bike! Both those scenes got me thinking that it would be really funny if there was just this...

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

bicyclist that went around trying to spark romances between people, like a modern cupid lol.

4. Aw, Jang-mi's scene with her mom was wonderful. I know her and the dad made some mistakes, but they clearly care for Jang-mi a lot and I am loving the growing relationship between Ki-tae and her mom :)

5. Love how Ki-tae came home to find Jang-mi there, and just gave her this look like he was so happy she was there to keep him company :)

6. Lastly, everything about the ending was just perfect!!! It was so wonderfully heartfelt. When Ki-tae finally told Jang-mi about everything that happened, it was so satisfying. And, I think, all the more so for how long it took him to finally speak. When he said that part about not being able to let out emotion or the truth, I could just feel how long he's kept that in so keenly. And then how she just took his hand and, probably, for the first time in years let him hear the words "It's okay. You can let it out". It's just too lovely. They are my favorite couple so far this year. I love how it led perfectly to that confrontation at the end. That scene managed to have me cheering for Jang-mi one moment, then crying for Ki-tae's mom the next (seriously, Kim Hae-Sook, how do you do it?), and then had me clutching my heart when Ki-tae finally pulled Jang-mi into that hug and thought to himself, not that he wanted to be alone, but that he wanted to stay by her side! Gah. Everything was perfect. LOL, I love how the moment cuts off so abruptly with grandma's discovery though. Totally wasn't expecting it haha! Now this development is going to make things very interesting next week!

Wow. I wrote so much. I just adore this drama!

I really enjoy watching KT and Jm together because they're so comfortable with each other! They seem real in the sense that they don't do anything lovely dovey [yet![ but just being each other's company is enough for them. They have a mutual understanding for each other. The kind of comfort you get with a best friend ... but, really who am I kidding, I want to see the next level of their "friendship"!!!!!

Yes yes yes...I'm living every moment between kt and jm..finally there aren't any interruptions until the final parts of their scenes..The bike scene where I think it was the same guy that rode by was classic having jm save kt..and instead of pushing off instantly..she held him longer and look like she wanted another kiss..The look on his face with the fortune teller had me balling out..i had to rewind and watch it again and then he kept insisting how great it was with a final whisper at the end..I started crying out of laughter..but I think the most emotional scene was kt pulling jm in for the hug..it was soft and shuttle at first but as jm started talking bout how he should let his emotions out he held her tighter while she stop patting him and press kt closer to her and when she told him she won't be by his side he all but engulfed her in his arms..loving the process of that scene so much

That hug. I loved that they used a hug in the ending scene, instead of a kiss.

It was a nice detail how his body language in the last scene bookended his body language during their first kiss (in the field). There, although sparks started to fly, he kissed her in a calculating way, with one arm engaged and the other oddly (e)motionless by his side. The ending hug started out the same way, but then morphed when he decided to open up, go all-in, and not let her go. It was such a perfect mirror for how his feelings had fully evolved and bookend to the moment when those feelings started.

In my mind Lee Seung Gi has always been the undisputed king of delivering great Dramaland hugs. But it looks like he may have some competition. ;-)

0

@Gidget:

YES totally ... that newest hug was symbolic. Totally heartfelt with BOTH arms whileheartedly involved = so significant when compared to that kiss/embrace with only 'half' engagement.

0

i jus wonder how they are gonna play it out in jang mi's mind..she can tell that the hug was getting deeper which allow her to go all in with the hug too but will she think that he was jus consoling her, congratuating her for accomplishiing the task or is she goin to think that hug had a deeper meaning..

0

that hug and the added squeeze...

this drama played along with loads of gestures rather than words for Gi-tae.

I am sure Jang-mi must have felt that!!

as commented by another viewer how GT only hugged her with left hand only during the daring kiss by Jang-mi in front of HR & SH and captured by aunty mi-jung (?)

this hug in this episode 10 is very deep and the camera really swayed us too with such deep emotion - the turbulence and typhoon as jang-mi said earlier that must be storming inside them!

how Grandma busted them!

oh.... can't wait that Marriage is happening and the dating cut short to no dating at all straight to the wedding day!!

"5. Love how Ki-tae came home to find Jang-mi there, and just gave her this look like he was so happy she was there to keep him company :)"

Ki-tae's father is a problem but a bit differently than you say, at least for me. In a show full of interesting, layered characters, he's practically the ONLY one with no back story, no layers, nothing. I have no idea what makes him tick, what made him like this. At first it looked like maybe he escaped his marriage to cheating (which is a common way to men escape unhappy life in home), but in this episode he was just creepy creep and nothing else. It bothers me a bit that we haven't given ANYTHING to sympathize with him. And I'm not saying we should sympathize with his cheating but that cheaters are usually people, too, and many have at least some redeeming qualities and sometimes you can at least understand WHY they are doing it even if it cannot be condoned. But when it comes to Ki-tae's dad, nope, nothing like this. He's just a creep. *sigh*

I thought they've implied that she had family money, but he didn't. And it seems like she's from a different sphere than them.

I wonder if he married for money, thus their conflict is about love. That'd make them the opposite of JM's parents, who married for love, and fight about money.

If this is right, it'd also explain why mom wants to put JM's sincerity to the test.

(1) "Cupid" cyclist? :)

Was lol at another comment that a cyclist isn't exactly a tiger to warrant those reactions ... not just once but twice.

But it served its OTT purpose of highlighting the reactions to the 2 saves = YR vs Gi Tae
and for the double twist on the Ki-Tae/ Jang Mi mutual save

(2) Also of significance in ep 10 was the symbolic latest hug

Wholehearted and genuine this time on Ki-tae's part with BOTH his arms in a heartfelt embrace instead of that ONE arm kiss ( from the time aunt was watching)

@Chandler: spot on! I agree with all that you wrote especially the "highlighted" parts!
Yes, to watch how their feelings and understanding grow towards each other, their actions speak louder than words...

And that for Ki-tae to share with Jang-mi, that tells us so much how Jang-mi IS THE ONE for him. The one that really understands him and the one that makes him not want to live alone again.

I felt so heart wrenching watching him - realising that Jang-mi is on the couch as if waiting for him and him watching Jang-mi and stroking her gently... wow... those moments, really caught to your heart, dont you feel it??

what a roller coaster mixed of emotion this drama had led us all!

yes, it is so very unhealthy that I checked this site before I go to sleep and checked again before I start my work! what is this??

For me, the honor, "worst character of the bunch," goes to Jangmi's mother - the kind who is social-climbing, greed-driven, and incapable of feeling any shame. How can you be sure that Jangmi's mother even loves her daughter? Is the woman even capable of maternal love?

Gitae's mother really called it, and the ensuing cat-playing-with-the-mouse game was just delicious.

This episode feels like a drag.

Thank goodness Jang Mi is so patient with Gi Tae. Come on, admit it already. What else is there to lose since both have decided separate ways at the beginning.

Hoon Dong goes from chicken jerk to fighter cock to marry Jang Mi's friend. I don't get the regret JM's friend has to getting herself pregnant, don't you know you were the one who slept with him when he's drunk? I hope this is not some sick ploy to get him.

And finally, Yeo Rum has stopped smiling and show some angst and Gi Tae's mother (sigh!), she has tenacity but she tired out the wrong people. Direct it at your jerk husband, lady!

Hopefully there is new direction in next few episodes.

I loved this episode so much I had to rewatch some of the highlights. I love that KiTae is realizing his feelings and he is starting to act on them. The way he looks at her feels so genuine... you can see him longing for her. Kudos to Yeon WooJin for the awesome acting. Also JangMi is such a sweet lovable character. I can't wait for next week's episode!

KiTae's mom's story is truly heartbreaking. Her sobbing at the end of the episode really got me. I really hope that she is able to find happiness and get away from that sleazeball of a husband.

I love every scene with JangMi and KiTae. =) This drama is rocking my socks!

This is where I feel the upswing. Yay!

I'm glad that Ki-tae and Jang-mi are sort of on the same page now. I'm glad they are more in tune with how they feel about each other, and the more we can get away from the second leads, the better.

Speaking of second leads, I know many people will feel sorry for Yeo-reum, but he really put himself in that situation. I give him kudos for pursuing the girl and being active unlike a lot of second leads. However, he entered this relationship knowing that the girl was semi-attached and therefore couldn't be with him completely. I partly blame her for leading him on, yes, but I give her slack because of her circumstances. She was dumped humiliatingly, got dragged into a contract engagement with some guy she barely knew, and was being hit on by a hot youngster. Her feelings were clearly confused, but Yeo-reum wasn't. So I did not like it when he was pretending he didn't know about her feelings and blaming her for not hiding her "true feelings." Excuse me, but you barged in on a private moment.

Which leads me to my next gripe: eavesdropping. Is this the only way to progress the story? There's gotta be other ways! Come on!

Lastly, I felt sorry for Ki-tae's mom here. She's been kind of a controlling witch these last few episodes, so I'm happy to see a bit more depth thrown her way. I maintain the hope that she and Jang-mi will eventually have a wonderful relationship, and if they don't, it would be a seriously wasted story in this drama. Would it kill drama writers to have a heroine who has healthy relationships with both her her mom AND her mother-in-law?

Firstoff MUCH THANKS lollypip, for much-awaited ep 10 recaps.

I felt ep 9 was a drag (for once, in this whole series), so ep 10 was very welcome for its catalystic "upswing".

1) 2nd leads: I am kinda of tired of them. Not sorry at all not to see a whole wkend of NO Se-Ah, Hyun-Hee, Hoon-Dong and Yeo-Reum.

2) Used to be a neutral fencesitter as far as YR was concerned. Not his supporter, yet I also didn't see him as totally 'fake' even as in later episodes his constant smile was getting tired and irritating.
And frustration for YR's constant presence as 'rescuer' - from first kiss to soup incident where he was the one hugging even as Ki Tae was frantically worrying.

Just felt that smile was his 'easy-going' way of masking all underlying issues, real and otherwise, including his won deep-seated vulnerabilities.

After ep 9, I feel more sympathy for the character.

3) There are comments that Yeo Reum should take ownership since he ploughed ahead knowing she was in this semi-committed situation relationship.

I buy that. But while I like her kindness, gung ho spunk and totally relate to her bzbody tendencies to help and save people, I also think Jang Mi should take responsibility for her flakey partner decisions and blowing hot-cold.

Afterall she is the one constantly reassuring YR that it's all fake and choosing to cosy up to him on couch in Ki Tae's living room while ostracizing Ki Tae. And constantly clarifying.

Then upon realisation that Ki Tae's kisses were the real thing ... making excuses to stall, instead of coming outright to communicate honestly: "Wait a minute, I am confused, I may have changed my mind".

While I was getting increasingly annoyed with YR for his cockblocking presence and increasingly irritating grin, ep 9 changed my sympathies. What is the dude supposed to read from all that?!?

And Jang Mi going to all those lengths to drag Ki Tae from cafe to office - just to hide and not talk about the fact they kissed. Isn't that some of HER doing?

Esp more since she's always been trying to mask all her own feelings re: Ki Tae too.

Sure he went into it with his eyes open, but it's also confusion for YR because of her reactions, and her assurances/clarifications/reactions to different people.

Not that it's an entirely relevant response to your remarks, but every time all three of them (JM, KT, & YR) are in the apartment together, all I can think is how much I wish it would suddenly morph into a French sex comedy. ;)

Menage a trois... yes, no objections from me either! ;)

They had a good vibe going together and all 3 with issues supporting each other.

My guess is Yeo Reum won't object as much as Ki Tae who seems way more possessive, and YR also seems at home and likely to fit a bromance ....and Jang Mi, lucky girl, will have the best of both worlds.

Except...he's living there. And he's Jang Mi's actual boyfriend (at this point).

I actually loved that the last straw for him wasn't the kiss (remember, in an earlier episode he said it didn't matter if KT and JM had slept together). What hurt him was seeing JM make such an emotional connection with KT.

(And in my youth, I was - at one time or another - on both sides of that couple where one is slowly falling for someone else, which made that 'barging in' scene particularly painful to watch.)

How can a show be so funny and still make cry when it hits certain notes? This show and It's Okay That's Love know exactly which heartstrings to pull at and I will probably rewatch this drama once it's over.

I have adored Yeon Woo Jin since Ojakgyo Brothers and Arang and the Magistrate but I love him so much more right now in this drama. Words also cannot describe how much I appreciate Jang Mias a character and a person. She's not afraid to overstep certain boundaries for the good of other people and she always means well regardless of the results.

Thanks for the great recap! I'm following this show too and the scene b/w mom and Jang-mi was definitely touching. I noticed you didn't comment much about Hyun-Hee. For some reason, I kept feeling her character is very manipulative. I never fully trust what she's saying or her feelings toward Hoon-dong are genuine. Every action seems calculated. Not sure if it's just me feeling that way or anyone else sharing the same feeling.

I wondered about them and concluded that they probably got more uneven because of increasing exhaustion from the filming schedule.

I have uneven eyes too and hate it when they are magnified through my eyeglasses. Actually, in this episode, it looked like a lot of eyes were very strange.

Thanks for the recap!
I think this episode brought a lot of things to light, especially the parallels between the characters have with each other.
We now know that Yeo Reum is imperfect for Jang Mi in every way, because he chose to ignore the fact that he saw her and Gi Tae falling in love and pretend that everything was okay-much like what Se Ah and mom-in-law do, and what Gi Tae and Jang Mi hate most about their previous partners.
Jang Mi doesn't want someone to overlook her action, she needs someone who acknowledges them and does something about them, because she is just emotional that way, and whereas we see that Gi Tae is now changing for the better as well, that doesn't seem to be the truth with the Se Ah or Yeo Reum.
Yeo Reum also finally seems like no more than a flimsy shield that Jang Mi keeps between herself and her emotions for Gi Tae-a way for her to deflect the affection she feels for him sue to the fear that they won't be reciprocated (as seen by the last seen where Jang Mi said she was happy she could finally go back to Yeo Reum, even though she now knows she really doesn't feel anything for him at all)
I was also really happy that for once, we see that mom-in-law finally let her emotions out,and what made me even happier was that Jang Mi was the cause of it.
I was also glad that we were finally getting rid of the are-we-getting-married-or-not plot because 1.It was getting boring and 2. I think once Gi Tae and Jang Mi actually separate, they'll realize much more how much they need each other (although I WAS NOT HAPPY THAT GI TAE DIDN'T TRY AND STOP HER GAHHH GI TAE JUST SAY WHAT YOU THINK ALREADY WHAT HAS JANG MI TAUGHT YOU)
Grandma witnessing the scene was quite a surprise, so I'm looking forward to seeing how they're gonna dodge this one.
Saranghae, Gi Tae and Jang Mi, and I look forward to seeing you finally confess to each other and yourself what your true feelings are! (You know it's messed up when even Hyeon Hee and her baby daddy can see the sparks-especially with how oblivious the latter is).

I really hope the one posting recaps are always. Either its always girlfriday or lolypip. Otherwise their comments about the show won't be constant. I notice in ep 9 girlfriday dissapointed with the show, then i read ep 10 recap lolypip is just in love with it. I appreciate your fast recaps though. Just, it will be nice that us as viewers only read one comment/thought for the same drama. Otherwise, we will be very confuse in which side dramabeans is, the love team, or the hate team.

Ooooh, I loved her review. Thought it was hilarious. The recap was wry and pithy Stylistically it was a perfect complement to her comments. Plus she did a great job explaining the problems she saw in the show's recent episodes.

I also had been feeling like the show was losing a little of it's mojo; but trying to figure out exactly why would have required way too much time. She easily explained the why. That's what makes Dramabeans, Dramabeans.

I dunno, I like that when a show is recapped by more than one writer, we get different opinions and viewpoints. I think it's interesting when the recappers don't always 100% agree, because it gives readers different points to consider. There's nothing that says the site has to be For or Against a show, or *only* love it or *only* hate it :)

True true true..even if I didn't care for the recap I didn't mind having it to voice different opinions..I hate it when people expect u to agree with their views or having to keep the widest mind open or else they call u closed minded..got tired of highschool King of savvy cause of the relationship built with the leads but when people voice their different opinions in the review..other people get on them and tell them either stop watching or don't comment..what's the fun of all agreeing to the same thing

Me too. I enjoy the diverse opinions and viewpoints of different reviewers and commenters. ,

Even when gf and jb took turns on recapping any drama, I always kinda knew from the tone ights.who was doing which without looking at the name. And it was part of the fun reading their seperate insights.

For me ... even while enjoying the whole ride from ep 1-8; I found this one ep 9 dull and side digressions unnecc and unbelievable. It took steam away from the convincing narration so far.

Thank God for ep 10, which is a revival reprieve.

That interests me. "We will be very confuse in which side dramabeans is, the love team, or the hate team."

I don't think DB as a site wants to be clearly on a side or another. Some of the saddest moments for me reading DB are when people fight because they view the other commenter as against them, rather than a fan with different opinions and tastes.

It hurts my heart.

totally agree - why should there be clear divides as to love team or hate team?

diversity of opinions and viewpoints are what enriches life. how bland would life be if we were all to see and like everything one same way?

celebrate instead the maturity on this site that frees us to enjoy and openly discuss different takes on dramas.

what is also gratifying (and a relief) is to find a support group that is just as addicted to visiting/refreshing this thread only about 15x daily! ;)

personally, i love it when there are multi-cap'ers. b/c of their collective experiences with other dramas and their intimate knowledge of korean language/culture/customs/food/, we get a more detailed insight into subtleties that would have often gone unnoticed.

Finally here!!! Been waiting for the recap since yesterday..I understand all your feelings about the family but people still blaming the father for cheating and being th scum bag he is still needs to wait for the story to unfold..I mean it's been three years since the incident with the dad when kt found out so it might have been goin on even longer then that..at that time who's fault is it really thay the mom is still enduring all this pain..we don't know why or when he actually cheated so I have to give the dad some slack because it seems that either both or the mother is the one that wants to keep up with appearances..

Well thay story aside I love each character moment in this episode except HH..she seems to be the only shifty character left..it's either she is an orphan or someone a mega millionaire since her parents run some kind of a shop..

Hoon is killing it for me in this show..The guy is the most legit best friend I have scene and now he stepping up to the plate with hh..I think that kiss with yr was the most sincere for both charactera..lol

YR I can't even feel bad for..I mean thay scene where he tells her she shouldn't of been caught should of been so much painful to watch but the delivery was so weak and it look like he never change his expression..I really couldn't even tell if he was angry like he was still trying to look good for the camera. .

Seha had little screen time but she gave more of a delivery in the few lines that she had for me..she realizes that she lost out and wants him back but thay darn pride jus puts a stop to everything..compare to most 2nd leads she is very tolerable to me since she hasn't actually force any issues between the lead..

Onto kt for me..This guy is doin justice for his previous roles I had seen him in..I had such low expectations but he is blowing it up with all his expressions and emotions..The bad kiss, fortune teller, bike scene, revealing his secret and that hug at the last scene are still so vivid in my mind..maybe since I watch this episode like 4 times but boy can he leave an impression with all his emotions..usually they are either sad or stoic but kt is able to relay such strong acting throughout this episode with his range of expressions..

JM has stole this show from the very beginning..both her and kt demand attention whenever they are on scene but the two of them together makes he hate it when other people are surrounding them..I think her bringing up yr each time she talks about having to spare people's feelings and living her life is because she is trying to convince herself that yr is for her..u can see it in her face and hear it in her voice when she catches herself bringing up yr like it's a sin..but her drunken state with hh showed that she has been totally caught by kt and I'm jus waiting for tht moment she confesses since it was so easy for her to confess to yr and hoon, but so tough for her with kt..that last scene was so great because u can see her...

I actually wanted the writers to do something different with Hyun-hee's and Hoon-dong's situation. I wanted an emotional investment. Sure this is a romantic comedy but Hyun-hee's and Hoon-dong's situation could have been made into a fresh story. I don't like how he just did a 180 turn about how he felt about Hyun-hee the moment he found out about the kid, i am sure some may disagree. But i wanted them to work through the two's relationship. Every couple in the show is in a different situation, I would have personally preferred it if Hoon-dong was a bit angry at first, he had nothing to apologize about she put herself in the situation when she decided to take advantage of him. Their storyline would have satisfied me if we could see their struggle as they try to accept their new reality. Maybe try having them come to an agreement like normal adults, Or just make them the couple in the single parent situation, where it shows yeah they may share a child but it doesn't mean they have to marry and that they could both take care of the child without any bitterness between them. IDK I just feel like their situation could have been executed in a better fashion, then it was.

Sometimes writers fall in love with a character or characters and sometimes they just lose interest in one or more. I think that may have happened here as almost nothing of interest has happened with the secondary characters -- even the pregnancy seems tossed in and underwritten. The focus has been pretty intensely on the leads and their parents since the 3rd episode.

I think they are gradually revealing each characters cards but since our leads haven't had as much back story as other shows this episode mad up it..we already know 4 of the characters back story and a good guess about Se ha..only one left is hh but her character has alrwady lost so much ground..even confessing to hoon but having the kid seems like it was to manipulate him into coming back

I think part of the issue with HoonDong's reaction is that HE doesn't seem to think that he was taken advantage of. We know that HyunHee plied him with drinks until he was too wasted to be able to really consent to what he was doing but he wasn't paying enough attention at the time to realize that she wasn't drinking so I suspect that he believes that this pregnancy is the result of a mutual indiscretion, made worse by the fact that she keeps acting like she has genuine feelings for him so he believes that she really cares about him. If you look at it from that POV (that he was just using spending time with her as a distraction from the stuff that went down with Jangmi, that he likes playing around but certainly wasn't serious about her and the fact that she's now pregnant because of one 'mistake' and not even as a result of a long term relationship AND the fact that she assumed he wouldn't step up and gave him an out at the temple), HoonDong probably thinks that this is the honorable way to deal with the situation. We know that HH is manipulative and a big fat liar but he probably views her as a naive, idealistic girl who ended up in a less than ideal situation so his reaction to this development makes sense to me.

That being said, I don't think this wedding is going to go off judging by the fact that HyunHee is still acting shady and that she basically admitted in this episode that she was looking to marry up now when she's still young and beautiful so that she won't be stuck poor and working at that department store forever. And by the fact that HoonDong's mother is intent on making her life hell and breaking her before they can reach the wedding day.

That being said, I also would have liked them to handle this situation differently but I think this plot line would always be un satisfying simply because HH is a terribly written, confusing character. While watching this episode, I couldn't figure out if the writers wanted us to honestly sympathize with her or hate her for essentially trapping HoonDong in a despicable way. If she had clearer motives, we would know.

In my opinion, Hyeon Hee is a brilliantly written confusing character. I think the writer has a very clear idea of who Hyeon Hee is and is doing a great job of showing that. Hyeon Hee is crafty and pragmatic, and she's already said straight out that she's not that nice of a person, despite outward appearances. Whether a viewer chooses to be sympathetic or disgusted or impressed by her cunning is up to them. I think she is much better and more intriguing that dramaland female villains who might as well have shown up in their very first scenes wearing a sign around their necks that said "I am a bad person. I am here to cause trouble. You should not like me."

Omg, thank you for writing this. I was too lazy to put it into words, but that is exactly how I feel about Hyun-hee.

I also think that the writers are purposefully withholding showing us what makes her tick and, I have to say, I kind of like it. It's a bold choice, one that's hard to pull off simply because with a character like Hyun-hee it's understandable that some people might just stop caring at a certain point. But I find her fascinating for some reason, and want to know what led her to make the choices she's made.

nicely put..her character is one that everyone can see but the story itself plays off on that on purpose..the only thing is that her story is so slow developing that people start to lose interest in her character as a whole..most of the time she is jus talking to jangmi about some of her issues..but when u add up all the scenes..she is deliberately deceiving each character..i would of been more caught up in her story if they had gave her more screen time but for now she is jus an enigma..someone for everyone to talk down about but at the same time not relating much to the story yet..with 6 episodes left i kinda wanna see exactly where she is coming from..either more screen time or kill her character off soon cause these tad bits of her doesnt keep me interested enough..

Yes, I absolutely loved loved the shaman scene. The shaman nailed their relationship and was onto their scam. Also adored how the shaman reversed their gifts - Jangmi is rich in her life energy and great love for everyone, whereas Ki Tae is not only poverty stricken of good will (he is so tamped down) but could bankrupt those around him - basically a black hole draining off energy. "You will not even find an ant." And the warning to Ki Tae, "you will be such a blockhead and so sorry if you lose her."

Beautifully, comically rendered.

I'm trying to suspend disbelief for this show but I'm sorry, how does mom think GiTae will be happy by forcing him into a marriage he doesn't want with someone he doesn't love - logic much?

And has no one walked by a person riding a bike in Korea? It's not like a tiger is about to pounce on you - this is seriously one of the worst drama ploys for closeness...ugh!

And now we are back to pretending AGAIN for grandm? I was done with this ruse 4 episodes ago - writers need some new ideas... So frustrating for a drama I LOVED in the beginning.

I thought the bike scenes were funny because the drama purposefully showed the typical way the trope would go down with Jang-mi and Yeo-reum and then hilariously turned it on it's head during the scene between our two leads, by having the girl save the guy instead. It was cute and funny.

Also, I'm pretty sure they're not back to pretending again. The grandma found out and the ruse is up.

The bike scene reminded me of the times she gave him a piggy back ride. Usually it is the guy who gives the girl the piggy back ride and usually it is the guy who saves the girl from the bike, but with JM and KT it is reversed. Twice she has given him piggy back rides and the now she saves him from the bike. It is so nice how she is always looking out for him.

i guess from my experience with reply 1994 i just learned to get along with the show instead of asking WHY did you go into that direction and dropped it when it doesnt fit my liking anymore. like for trope lovers, which i dropped ever since the capital A.

that way youll get a much more enjoyable viewing experience imo.

with reply 94, ive learned that chilbong will never get the girl and so instead of asking sung na jeong WHYYYYYYYY i just went along with her, that maybe shes looking for something else in life. (i sulked and didnt watch the last two eps til 2 weeks after the show's finished though. so revisiting might be a good idea too lol)

as for gi tae's mother... humans are effed up that way. its the common thing asian parents have, similar like telling their children to become doctors when they love art. parents who endured a hard life earning money will most prob push their kids into taking high-earning jobs instead of letting their kids explore their hobbies. the same thing with marriage issue in this drama.

yes, no one dies from getting ran over by a bike but no one holds in their poops for the whole day to endure a wine party with a bunch of evil ajummas too. this show has been over-the-top since the beginning so yeah, im fine with that.

i agree on the last one though. this is like that dragged husband game in reply 1997 (i keep referring to the reply series lmao sahrry), they play it til the end and it tires me ouuuut. i just want gi tae and jang mi to make out. now. get in bed. have babies. have BBQ with OT6 like that present scenes in reply 1994.

As for Gi Tae's mom, that woman does not have my sympathy. She CHOSE to live a lie, pretending to the world that hers is a happy marriage.

She even had the gall to put on a ring she knew was intended for her husband's mistress and was humiliating towards JM's mom. True, no woman deserves to be cheated upon, but she was complicit in her husband's misdeeds by her desire of projecting a happy facade.

And yes, Gi Tae's lack of affirmative action, by deeds or words, in developing his relationship with Jang Mi is starting to amusingly annoying me: I've begun calling him a f**ktard for his sluggishness in that respect!

i actually thought the bike scene was brilliantly done on two counts: 1) it literally fulfilled the fortuneteller's earlier prophecy of JM saving GT; and 2) as what everybody else mentioned above, it highlighted the difference in JM's reaction to the forced proximity that the saving entailed.

I personally think this episode has kicked me (hard) right back into the love camp. I was also befuddled and somewhat dismayed by last episode, especially with the whole Se-Ah's "Get Ki-tae into bed no matter how" scheme and Yoo-reum being so needy (he gets even needier in this episode, darn).

But holy-moly. There are just so much to gush over in this episode. That last scene between Mom and Jang-mi more than just makes up for last episode's drag. It's so touching, and it shows us the Jang-mi we've always known and cheered for. I dare say that this is the most touching and emotional and heartfelt we've gotten to see her. And Mom earns a lot of points for finally, finally showing us her real emotions. That she's not just a heartless typical makjang mother-in-laws. I had a hunch back then in the first episodes that Mom is not who she tries to make everyone think she is. But she continually proved me wrong by being the obnoxious one-dimensional evil witch that I thought she was. Hopefully, hopefully, we'll get to see more of this side of Mom, because I freaking love it. The more Mom shows her real side, I think it'd be the faster and easier for Ki-tae to show his true feelings, because by now it's already bursting at the seams.

The one thing I still want to applaud this show for, every now and then, is how they manage to make us laugh, pee in pants and all, but still able to make us swoon and cry at the same time. That scene in the fortune teller was SO MUCH WIN. Yeon Woo-jin always kills it with his expressions and adorable charm. And is it just me or is Han-Groo getting prettier and prettier? I know she's beautiful but there's just something about her in this episode that makes her look so much, sweeter. Especially in that scene where she saves Ki-tae from the cupid cyclist, man I bet any man would be dying to kiss her if they were to be put in Ki-tae's position.

Come on, drama, bring it on. I breathe and live basically on you, show. And thanks LollyPip for the recap! Me loves you.

Thank you! I loved this episode. I kept refreshing waiting for the recap! It was so good - it gave me all the things I wanted - forward moment of feelings on Jang Mi's front, honest conversation between the leads and more humanization of the characters! And we still got some humour with the fortune teller scene and HD and YR's kiss.

OMG, the scene where Ki Tae tells Jang Mi about the ring and he finishes by saying that he learned that you don't let things out like your feelings or the truth with that single tear falling. Emotions! It was SO beautifully acted by Yeon Woo Jin and I truly, truly felt for him in that moment. You could see all the pain and sorrow and HURT on his face. He seemed like a child again. And I love Jang Mi's reaction - to just go over and hold his hand, to just be present for him and let him know that it's okay to show your feelings. It was SO beautiful and really reminded me why I love this show.

And then they topped that at the end when Jang Mi confronts Ki Tae's mother about the real reason that she's so obsessed with Ki Tae's marriage. When she said that the only way to ensure that Ki Tae is happy is for his mother to get to a point where SHE is happy - man, I teared up along with all the characters. Finally! We get to the root of all this and I love how JM just went right to the heart of the matter. That's our girl. It's crazy how someone who is so naive can also read people so well.

The Hoon Dong and Hyun Hee sub-plot still feels like it belongs to another show and I just don't know what to say about that. Also do NOT believe what HH said about her parents at all.

How cute is Ki Tae when he's happy and smiley? Like, more of that please.

AND THE LAST SCENE OF KITAE AND JANGMI HUGGING. He let someone in! And there were tears! And skinship! And she told him to express his feelings, ugh. All the feels, man. I WILL GO DOWN WITH THIS SHIP.

I happen to love Boon Dong. GOSH I love them all, except Se Ah. But I have to say that I don't think Hyun Hee is full gold digger. I think she is trying to manipulate someone into loving her. I think her parentage is going to prove interesting...if she not an orphan. Because she's way too careless (carefree?) for a poor girl, especially of the calculative Korean standards.

Hopefully anyways. I would want her parents to be rich so they can shut Hoon Dong's mother up.

Hmmmm you're right, maybe Hyun Hee isnt all poor after all! Maybe she's some runaway rich kid who's now sick of living poor and wants to land a rich husband. Maybe she had a bet with her parents if she could bring home a rich fella without him knowing she's rich, hence the "just meet them on the wedding day". HAHAHA idk what kind of things I imagine sometimes ?

that seem like the perfect twist to come about for HH..i cant see her being poor since it seems like she is too clever and even her personality seems like a higher tier then jang mi even though she is younger..

Excellent recap and review, LollyPip! I agree with all your main points!

But can we all just take a moment to appreciate how fabulous HG's hair was throughout this episode? It looked like a shampoo commercial with all the hair swishing she had to do here. :) I never knew that I would appreciate the hairstylists of a korean drama until I contrast MND's with another one I'm currently watching *ahem*... :P

Episode 10 has definitely been the most memorable one for me since it was such an emotional turning point for this couple. I cannot wait to see what next week has in store for us! Two scenes I have repeated about a million times already:

1). The look of tenderness that GT gives JM right after she asks if he likes her pretty much slayed me. Wowzers, just to have someone look at you in that way!

2). The entire fortuneteller scene and afterwards with JM's mom, LOL. I was so amused with all the expressions between the three actors. This was ALL WIN up to the last air kiss blown by GT. :) Friday, come faster!

im so in love with this episode!! i usually this drama with my sister but i watched this episode without her and i was dying because i have no one to talk and spazz with.

i love jang mi. so much. and i wouldn't blame the three guys for falling for her cos, who freaking wouldn't???

i love how Gi tae opened up to Jang mi about his family issues. The gi tae who used hate being around others, has finally opened up to someone, WITH FREAKING TEARS. it's not just the story that he revealed but also his feelings and emotions. it hurt me tho when JM said she isn't real. :((

And that scene with mom-in-law. it was kinda nice to see her cry, not becaue i hate her or something, but because i want to see real emotions from her. she's hurt but she doesn't let anyone see it.

and what's with hyun hee and hoon dong :| dude control yourself. don't make love just anywhere and anytime. it was so weird for me. the girl just cried about having the baby and stuff then a second later he was taking his clothes off. :((

anyway im loving where this is going and based on the preview we'll be getting a lot of cute.YES PLEASE I WANT

I thought that was a real jerk move that Ki Tae pulled with having Jang Mi ask for the ring. I mean, Mom did need to hear the harsh truth but what a hurtful way to do it. Chavez are she would not have listened any outer way, though.

I love how Ki Tae and Jang Mi are acting like they will never see each other again when, at this point , they have all the same friends. How exactly were they planning on avoiding one another. And whats wrong with staying on as friends anyway? Ki Tae is still hanging out with his sperm-stealing ex fiance and Jang-mi is cool with the guy who Non-dumped her for wanting to get married then made a baby with her bestie (that's unfair. She raped him... let's be honest). So why exactly does this have to be the last time you see each other?

I think kt never even expected his mother to bring out the ring..let alone a fake one so he didn't think it would go down that bad..As for hang in out with his ex..really the only time was her setting an appointment in the beginning for her breast..The charity which he went to on purpose to portray his fake relationship..Every other scene was either done by the mother or a coincidence..but they can't see each other since they holding back their own feelings about one another and it would be hard to see the other with a different person..they ready have feelings so being friends is out the question..hard enough being friends but with emotions attach..let the shenigans begin if that occurs

Honestly, I don't think Ki-tae should feel bad about doing that. I feel for his mom so much, but it was very unhealthy of her to actually say to her own son "Hide your feelings" especially when he was clearly just learning that his whole family life had been a lie. No child should have to bear that kind of weight, and parents owe it to their children to talk to them about these things, not ask them to bury their feelings for the sake of appearances.

I seriously can't stress enough how much my heart hurts for the mom and how invested I am in her journey, but I think she needs to realize that in order for her and Ki-tae's happiness she needs to start opening up to him about what she's been through instead of caring so much about appearances. Asking about that ring may be painful for her, but it's sadly a hell of her own making. If she hadn't insisted on upholding appearances, then she would never have had to wear that ring for everyone to see. In some ways, I think having Jang-mi ask for that ring is Ki-tae's way of finally trying to break through the barrier his mom has built for herself. As we saw in the flashback, when he tried to talk to his parents he was completely shut down, so it only makes sense that he would do something this drastic now that he's beginning to let his emotions out again.

That scene had me give up on the mother..how do u tell your only son when he finds out that both or them are lying to him and his father is stepping out to keep it down, change your expression so that no one knows..even the father was uncomfortable with the situation but the mother looked like she already had things plan out if kt found out..it's not even like he is a little kid..He understood the whole situation but the mom still try to cover it up..for people sympathize with the mom I don't get..maybe since there are a lot of females writing comments and watching kdrama but from a man's view..The mother seems more twisted to me to let something like this go on for so long..what's the end game here? Is she trying to merry kt off then divorce that's why the father bought a ring since he was gonna merry seha 3 years ago..its gotten to that point where kt dad was buying an engagement ring so the affair migjt had been goin on way longer then we might even suspect..The one time he seem really creepy was when jang mi was introduce to the family..other then that I haven't seen anything really wrong other then seeing his mistress in the side

Mom's crying scene gutted me the most, not simply because she was finally crying it out but because even though, FINALLY, FINALLY, she breaks apart, her cries are muffled and swallowed. She's still trying to keep it together so bad even after being tipped over. She's covering her mouth even when she should be letting her screams and wails of anguish ring out through the house. After years of being treated as a tool by her husband, a fussy old bat by her mother-in-law, a housemaid by her sister-in-law and (the kicker) an abhorration by her own son, she has the full right to "disturb" them with her screams of hurt. But she still doesn't. It just speaks to how ingrained and how much a part of her this belief to appear perfect is.

She is a master manipulator, but no one gets to where she is in a day. For now, even though mom can be revolting, I am on her side. I want her to break out of her self-made hell but it's not going to be easy. I hope JangMi helps and I know that when that happens, the both of them will be forces not to be reckoned with and able to be happy.

I love what you wrote about Ki-tae asking Jang-mi to bring up the ring as a final attempt at breaking through to his mom. I would add that it also shows his mom that he has shared a level of emotional intimacy with Jang-mi that he hasn't shared with anyone before (and that his mom has certainly never had). What a brilliant way to hold her accountable for her ridiculous “you must marry the person I tell you to marry” law by confronting her with the fact that the person she is so hell-bent on removing from his life is the one person he could actually open up to. It also places the burden of his marriage-phobia where it rightly belongs—on her (& his father), not on Ki-tae. And yet it isn’t quietly manipulative in the same way as her & Se-ah’s schemes. It’s a more confrontational way of putting his wounds out on the table for her to deal with or avoid. What a tense, heartbreaking, well-crafted moment.

Oh, Yeo-reum. My heart bleeds for you! Don't worry too much about Jang-mi, I'm willing to eat all the pasta your little heart desires to cook while you mourn your lost love... well, as long as it's gluten free!

Honestly, though. I have been a Yeo-reum fan from day 1 but knew he never had a chance up against Ki-tae... so I was prepared to put aside my Yeo-reum support for our main OTP, but Ki-tae hasn't really lived up to my expectations. I think it's just the fact that it's taken TEN EPISODES for him to finally open up to Jang-mi. I get that perhaps this is a more realistic representation of relationships in real life, with all his emotional issues he would need time to feel comfortable... but it makes it frustrating to me, as a viewer, to watch a character I love so much let go of a guy that's been nothing but nice to her for the guy that has emotional issues, a complicated family, and who's done nothing but use her. Because, really, that's all he's done... he tried to "help her not be used by guys in the future" by schooling her in the most sexist way that it's not that the guys are ass holes but it's her being her normal self that turns them into ass holes: UM... WHAT?! I don't even count the rescue from his clinic as a real rescue since it was his fault she was put in the situation to begin with and then he proceeds to vent his frustrations/fears at her by yelling that it's her fault for being too trusting, again!

I actually love Ki-tae as a character and I think he's acted out so well! Very lively and complex... I just don't think that he deserves Jang-mi, not as he is right now, and I don't think that the drama delivered in enough personal growth for me to root for them yet. I want Jang-mi to finally date a good guy! Even though we know that Ki-tae is a nice guy and will be good to her, she doesn't know... or she SHOULDN'T based on how he's behaved up to now. What she should know is that Yeo-reum has been nothing but nice to her, accepting all her crazy with a smile and opening up to her about his hopes and dreams and his abandonment very early on, and yet she's developed feelings for another potential-ass hole who has used her and belittled her. Not awesome. Yes, drop the rebound boyfriend when someone better comes along... but right now Jang-mi shouldn't have any real reason to think that Ki-tae is the better option.

I was really hoping that maybe Ki-tae would realize his feelings first and change slowly to be more worthy of Jang-mi... in other words, she needed to reject him first in order for him to prove himself. In stead we've gotten him being jealous... and though cute and funny, it still doesn't show he deserves her. These past two episodes just left me unsatisfied... I wanted more from our otherwise awesome characters :(

I agree with you about Ki-tae and I'm not even a huge Yeo-reum fan myself. I thought Ki-tae showed a LOT of promise from the beginning because of how he quietly appreciated Jang-mi's badass outspokenness, but his character has really turned out to be much more passive and closed off than I had anticipated. It's taken him 10 episodes to "open up" which--what does that even really mean? He still hasn't told her that he appreciates and respects her, that he is crazy for her and has developed real feelings. He kissed her once and then pretended it was not a serious thing, and then he pulled her in for a hug after they pulled their "final con" together. Yes, he shared an emotional story from his past, which was lovely...but that moment of vulnerability does not a healthy relationship build. I do have hope for this couple because I think that they have the potential to complement each other well, but I would really like to see Ki-tae develop more cajones and be braver and more outspoken with his feelings.

I'm just fine with his character's portrayal at this point. At first I was a bit annoyed too with the way they kept denying the growing attraction between them. But come to think of it, that's exactly how they should react. Jang-mi must be horrified to realize that she's getting attracted to Gi-tae, when she knew all too well about his commitment issue which is the exact opposite of her own sentiment. As for Gi-tae, considering how he was hell-bent on wanting to live alone rather than share his life with anyone, it must be hard for him to admit that he had indeed fallen in love with her and wanted to keep her. I believe all that will change soon after what happened in this episode. Now they understood each other better; Jang-mi finally knew why Gi-tae was so intent to avoid marriage, and why his mom being a cold-hearted control freak. Jang-mi's confrontation with his mom clearly affected him deeply and now he really saw her in a different light and came to realize what a gem she really is. He just needs some more time to sort out his feelings and to re-think about wanting to live alone. We still have 6 more episodes to go, for me the pace is well enough.

Ya know, your comment made me realize that it's not so much Ki-tae's lack of honesty about his emotions towards Jang-mi that bothers me. It's that in more recent episodes, we haven't seen his struggle as much as we had earlier in the show...and without that, there isn't really a hook into his inner life.

I WANT to see how difficult it is for him to open up. I feel like I would be onboard with his struggle if I could see it as an actual struggle. But his default setting lately has been "distant and uncommunicative" (with EVERYBODY, not just Jang-mi), which is just not that compelling. In fact, it bothers me most that he was so uncommunicative with Se-ah last episode. In order for me to buy his nonresponse to her whackadoo nature without losing MAJOR respect for him for not just shutting that crazy down, I needed to see more of where he was coming from. A reason to believe that his silence was more than simple cowardice. A flashback to when he was a kid and he was conditioned to quietly accept crazy into his life, an angsty shower, a flashback to how much he cared about her & felt betrayed by her for taking the Crazy to a whole new level, even someone on the show calling him out for his passivity (so he would have to be challenged on his go-to coping mechanism) would have been far more satisfying just watching him remain passive.

I like that he's not perfect (and that nobody on the show is). I find that interesting, and I am ok with slow growth as long as there is an indication of both growth and struggle. I think this show has been showing the byproduct of the struggle without letting us into the actual process of struggle for him, if that makes any sense.

Hm. See, I disagree. The thing about Ki-tae's struggle is that it's one that isn't always apparent to the outside eye. On the surface, he just seems like any other guy that wants to be single. He has friends, he has a successful career and it's not like he's completely hiding himself away. It's not something that he even accepts as a struggle at the drama's outset, but rather something he views as a life-choice.

So I guess that's why I understand how slow his growth has been because only through discovering his attachment to Joo Jang-mi in episode 7 (which is still fairly recent IMO), did he even come to the realization that he's "not okay". I think that episode 8 and 9 showed him realistically fumbling through what it means to actively want to be with a particular person because, up until now, his whole plan has been geared towards being alone, and that wish is not something that he can easily do away with.

Falling for someone is one thing, but establishing trust with a person like he did this episode is what is really necessary for him to begin honestly communicating and putting himself forward.

I find it interesting that you take issue with him being so distant and uncommunicative when it's revealed this episode that that's pretty much the type of life his family has him trapped in. See, I completely get why he is the way he is now because if I were to discover that my whole family life was a lie, and that I wasn't even allowed to discuss it with them or let out the truth? All the relationships in my own life would begin to feel distant. The trust you have in your family is pretty much the strongest of all and when a trust that huge is broken it's only natural that someone would close off in the way Ki-tae did AND only natural that it would take him this long to open himself up to trusting someone again.

I can only agree up to a certain point bout yr but really he hasn't done much if anything at all either..maybe the hero stealing scenes and asking if she is ok..but other then that when a station get tough he bails on her..completely left her alone when she was sleeping at the cafe..only went after her cause he was curious about why people like her..took cash to figure out what jm and kt relationship was..not knowing she was in a fake relationship he basically try to snake a girl from a guy and kissing her..tries to guilt trip her into letting him stay with her since he lost his place which was his fault since he basically steals from his job..uses his back story to gain sympathy or an excuse to why he was mysterious but then uses it again on kt when he was gonna get kicked out..The time he showed up to get her from the wedding dress was way out of his character since he already knew jang mi was doin so many other things but decided to show up for that time..putting aside all thay I guess he decent guy since he hug her in the office..but even though kt used her for his benefit as well as tricking her into using it for hers..He has stood up for jang mi at every turn whenever the blame was on her from the hospital to the stalker case..He isn't perfect but neither is any of the charactwrs..yr is basically hoon but a nicer smile..All flash and no substance which is why jang mi liked him since she hasn't really connext with kt..I'm almost positive that if a better actor play yr..I would actually feel bad for the second lead but this guy is such a horrible actor thay there is no feeling of sad or even a threat whenever he appears cause I jus can't feel anything for his character..Seha has had far less screen time but even she showed some emotions

Couldn't agree more! Yeo-reum is just emotionless. As I see it, both he and Jang-mi are just good friends who kissed, nothing more. Even the kisses aren't passionate like the ones Jang-mi and Gi-tae shared. Seriously I really can't feel any chemistry between them. He's not such a prince either, and yes he's basically Hoon Dong with a nicer smile (I like your choice of word, heh). So I never think he's way better than Gi-tae or that he deserves Jang-mi more at this point. If only his character is like Hwi-kyung from You From Another Star, I'll definitely root for him before I jump ship to the main lead

He's acting doesn't really bother me. He's not a very animated character so I am willing to let go of the issues with his performance in order to accept the character in the story. So, I can't really comment on "not feeling bad because the actor is so bad" comments a lot of people have been having. What I DO feel bad is that we, as viewers, know that Yeo-reum is not the guy for Jang-mi, Ki-tae is... but I feel like this drama hasn't really given Jang-mi, the character, a reason to know that. Like you've pointed out, Yeo-reum isn't perfect either -- none of the characters are-- but despite all his flaws I think he's been better to Jang-mi than Ki-tae has. Jang-mi is a ball of crazy: she's too emotional, she cares too much, she gets too invested... and Yeo-reum is the only guy that accepted her as she is. OBVIOUSLY Ki-tae learned to appreciate that about her... but he has spent the majority of the episodes up until now telling her to change that which makes her special AND MEANING IT. It's not the case of K-drama main lead ass hole syndrome: "I talk mean because I lurv you and I don't know how to express it" since Ki-tae isn't an ass hole and he really believed it when he was telling Jang-mi these things.

It just frustrates me because I want Jang-mi to make the right decisions because they are clearly right. I want her internal monologue to go: "Yes, I've developed feelings for Ki-tae and that makes sense because as great as Yeo-reum is, Ki-tae has done this, and that, and that, and that. He's just kind of great!" whereas right now her internal monologue would be something like "I've developed feelings for Ki-tae? What the fuck?! What the hell is wrong with me?! UGH. Another ass hole that's scared of commitment, when will I learn my lesson?"

idk why people keep saying that isnt his character..at first people said he was mysterious thats why he is dull..that evaporated fast when he kept following jang mi around..how at the most crucial moment of his story it isnt his character to be animated..i guess it can go to a certain extent but when u see the girl u supposedly going out with and have feelings for holding another guys hand..do u keep your kool and show no emotions..i think in that scene everything would of been hung out if the actor was better..the character to me is being wasted because im usually the guy that cheers for the 2nd dude becuase u can see that he has been more supportive of the lead, but even with his caring and thoughfulness towards her i was already tired because of the acting..

I get what you're saying about YeoReum and JangMi's relationship and I think you raise an interesting point but I think that KiTae has a point in telling Jang Mi that she can't keep allowing herself to be so open and easily attached and overly emotional. I think he meant those things because he wants her to take the steps to protect herself. Yes, it's part of what makes her her but it's also why she ends up being used and taken advantage of constantly by people who don't have her best interests at heart. She tries so hard to see the best in people which is part of why she can empathize with his mother but it's also how she ends up befriending a snake like HyunHee or in a long term relationship with a wannabe playboy like HoonDong. That quality blinds her from seeing the ulterior motives that a lot of these people hold.

Kitae saw, from the beginning, how she's been mistreated and he instructed her to 'be cool' about things because he wants her to stop giving so much of herself to other people that she invariably gets hurt. I love JangMi's character and I think it's great that she's so empathic and cares about others more than herself but there's a downside to that too and it's something that she needs to work on. Just like how KiTae needs to learn to open up and stop suppressing his feelings, she has to learn when it's necessary to draw a line in the sand to protect herself. She needs to learn that it's okay to take care of yourself when need be and although he didn't originally express it in the right way, I think that KiTae tried to help her see that. Now he's realized that there is a good side to that quality and that she's not just super naive and clingy but that does not change the fact that learning to manage how much of herself she gives to others would be of benefit to her.

My sentiments exactly..for me its more about who is able to bring out the best from jang mi..not someone that mindlessly allows her to fall deeper into her thought process..its ok to be caring and empathize with people but seeing jang mi from the beginning to now..look at all the turmoil she has gone through because of who she is..thats why kt would be good for her in the aftermath of this fake relationship..plus the chemistry between them is bursting from the seams..

0

See, I don't agree at all!

I think there is a difference between making sure to take care of yourself than blaming the victim for being victimized.

Jang mi, with all her crazy, is a wonderful person and I'm completely against anyone that tells someone that's so caring and open that it's their fault other people are ass holes and take advantage of them. The proper, mature advice to give her wouldn't be "change yourself so you don't make these guys into ass holes" it would be "learn to be more critical." Because THAT'S her flaw, at least in my opinion. It's not that she's too open or too caring, I think those are AMAZING qualities, but that she doesn't know how to tease apart the people worth it and those who are not (probably if she had been more critical, she would never have entered into this fake engagement to begin with). I can understand that from Ki-tae's point of view he was actually trying to be helpful and giving her excellent advice but it fell waaaaayyyyy short.

I think Ki-tae can become someone worthy of Jang-mi, he is a really caring person who has a lot of great qualities... he just got messed up along the way because of his crazy family. I just don't think that he's grown enough, yet. I'm just annoyed at the drama... I wanted more growth from both of them before they reached this point.

0

I think that was what i was trying to relay with my comments..its a good thing that jang mi is so open and caring for people but she needs to learn who and for what reason she is doing it for..not jus aimlessly helping every single person in the world out becuase it can start to wear on her and not everyone is so grateful for the sentiment..people will start to take advantage of her kindness to the point where it is unhealthy for her..she fell head over heels for both hoon and YR without getting to really know them and bam it hits her even harder when she finds out their true intents..its great with kt because she didnt fall for him instantly..she was able to see his developement and his true nature which is better for me becuase she is getting to know the real person before she commits herself to him..no characters in this show has shown that they are worthy of the other..but kt is the only one that jang mi has seen truly vulnerable and didnt start off liking him off the bat which makes their developlement all the more worth it since kt also knows all of jang mi faults and struggles..

0

I think we have to take into account the fact that YR is much younger than all the other leads. At first, I found him frustrating a lot, but when I realized he is supposed to be much younger than GT or JM, I understand why. Seeing from that perspective, his actions are more like a teenager flirting with a girl he likes, nothing so serious. Of course, age does not always decide how much love you can give. But I feel that YR is not mature enough in the relationship with JM.

different perspective here, but i certainly would rather date a guy with family problem than a guy who once were paid to stalk me. a reminder here that yeoreum didnt even apologize. gi tae, the one with emotional issues, apologized. im not comparing the appropriateness of these two guys bc theyre both effed up in their own way, but to say that yeoreum is nothing but nice... hm, not really. he's been making out with jangmi but he never asked jangmi to date him (idk about korea, but in my culture we dont kiss before we make the deal), and he has history of going around random rich noonas... so is he nothing but nice? i disagree.

then again, if we take sexism issues... this is kdrama. theyre far from out ideal equality standard. hoon dong being scared of gitae bc he thought gitae was gay, that would be offensive if we watch it but its still an acceptable joke in korean standard (maybe). so who are we to judge? also, i would consider it just an added spice to the comedy. had gitae said "yes ikr guys suck they should re-evaluate themselves" this wont be a romcom at all.

about how jangmi SHOULDNT date gitae. isnt it her choice? like, sometimes i got confused when people comment on sexist issues on a drama then tell the female character what she can or cannot do. it sounds contradictory to me. again, i know the feels of wanting the good guy to get the love (chilbong fan here), but if the girl chooses something else, we can only root for her. people want different things in life.

while he didnt say much, gitae to jangmi is a wakeup alarm, that nudges her out of her crave for company that she can just accept anyone into her life. which is something she needs if she doesnt wanna end up being a toy. in the process, she lost her way but this ep she's back. to me, she's not weak because she's doing what gitae wants. but she's strong because she keeps coming back to save gitae. (that kiss in ep 6, gitae was ready to let her leave but she couldnt). while yeoreum is the guy who spoonfeeds her with affection all the while never making their relationship official. her relationship with yeoreum scares me tbh.

My interest in this show has been waning since episode 7, but this episode had some really spectacular character moments among the less satisfying side-crazies & plot contrivances, so I'm definitely tuning in again next week. I'm ALWAYS a sucker for real character connections, so this episode was a goldmine for that moment between Jang-mi & Ki-tae's mom alone, not to mention Jang-mi's beautiful connection with Ki-tae in the kitchen.

Another thing that was interesting in this episode was how closely Yeo-reum paralleled KT's mom's in his willful ignorance of the relationship between JM & KT. His whole "You shouldn't have let me see this, I tried really hard to ignore it" upon seeing Jang-mi & Ki-tae holding hands in the kitchen was eerily similar to sad momma's nonreaction to her husband cheating on her. Of all of the themes being explored in this drama, "feel your feelings, share your feelings" seems to be the one that's trumpeted most loudly.

In spite of Ki-tae's emotional stuntedness, I think that Yeo-reum is actually more similar to sad momma than Ki-tae. Ki-tae sort of shuts down when strong emotions are present, but Yeo-reum tries to cover them up, which seems more harmful and manipulative in a way. Regardless, I need Ki-tae to step up the emotional honesty 100% because in spite of his character growth throughout the episode, I wanted to smack voiceover Ki-tae for not saying what he was thinking at the end of the episode. Although emotional hugs are not a bad way to translate thought into action. :P

Which brings me to some of the frustrating aspects of this episode, unfortunately.

The whole "sham marriage as central conflict" started growing stale for me around episode 6, so treating it as the central conflict in this episode really felt like the show was spinning its wheels to keep Ki-tae and Jang-mi together long enough for them to develop their feelings for each other. I really hope that granny knowing about the con will breathe new life into it.

I'm SO SICK of people conveniently walking in at the most inopportune times (Jang-mi & Ki-tae's kiss, their emotional moment in the kitchen). Not only is it waaaay too convenient, it is also incredibly frustrating, because those moments are what I slog through the weird side plotlines for! They are the most satisfying moments in the whole show! Why undercut them with manufactured drama about characters I care very little for? I was also confused that the show just decided not to talk about the fact that Yeo-reum interrupted the Jang-mi & Ki-tae's car kiss. Were all the characters just pretending it didn't happen? It was super weird to me that they didn't even talk about it in passing.

I COULDN'T BE LESS INTERESTED in Jang-mi's department store friend's weird quasi-pregnant relationship with Jang-mi's ex. I care so little about it that I am not even going to bother re-reading the recap to find their names. Enough of them,...

(cont'd)...Enough of them, please, show.

I wish that the seeds of certain things, like The Very Important and Emotionally Loaded Pink Diamond Ring, had been planted earlier in the show so they carried more emotional weight when they came into play, but that's a relatively minor complaint.

I was glad to see Jang-mi start to develop real feelings for Ki-tae this episode, but it was painful to see her use Yeo-reum as a sort of default back-up plan. I wanted her to own up to her feelings and approach Yeo-reum with integrity, rather than stringing him along. That said, I understood why she didn't immediately recognize/act on her feelings for Ki-tae, so I'm not too bothered by that.

All that said, what this show does well (humor + emotional depth) it knocks out of the park, and it was wonderful to see it reach the emotional payoffs that it laid the foundation for in earlier episodes. I'll definitely stick with it because it's an easy watch, but I am a smidge disappointed given that it was poised in its first 6 episodes to be one of the best shows of the year for me. Just cut down on the 2nd leads and stay out of melo territory, MND, and you'll be shinier than a pink diamond on a mistress's hand before ya know it!

Someone earlier made a good comment about yr and ignoring the kiss scene and how he is actually more like kt mom in the sense that he ignores/covers up the things he sees in order to shed his own feelings..but other then the leads I'm still totally invested in the show..no show can totally be perfect throughout its run..I even got tired of your from the star but we all know how great that turn out..I'm loving the chemistry even more with this series because everything seems so naturally and easy for them and their interactions..chong song carry the show for me in yfas but both leads are killing it for me in this series

I didn't catch that comment, but it's so true! I didn't finish YFAS so I can't speak to that, but I am definitely sticking with this show (at least for another week). I think I am more critical of this show than others because the flaws seem VERY obvious to me and the good parts of the show are just SO DAMN GOOD. But all that said, I live for our leads and love Jang-mi so, so much. It's rare to have a female lead written as compellingly (or more so) than the male lead, and these two are just knocking it out of the park with depth and acting ability.

im sticking to this show no matter how it plays out...im wayyyy to invested to give up now and with 6 more episodes..we have already learn so much of each character and the development hasnt drag for me..like lillypip said..we learn what the characters learn so i see where kt is coming from..before he was more open n surrounded himself but after the incident..who can blame him when his family forces him to put on this fake facade and to never show emotions..its time to rev up the romance and 6 more episodes i hope they fill it to the top

Wow!!! This episode was epic..so many emotions and feels throughout the entire thing..never a dull moment and every scene serve a purpose for the upcoming ones..I didn't feel a single drag this entire episode..and thought I knew that HH was really pretty and seha was a plastic barbie doll but jang mi jus looked hot and gorgeous throughout the show..even her outfits were spot on with how beautiful she look..guess it was the mid series makeover but all I could notice was how great her hair was and that body..wowzaa

Since it's my first time posting here, i'll just copy and paste my rant/gripes from my soompi pot here:

There are a few things that griped me this episode, so, I am going to tackle them one by one.

1) Han Yeo Reum - What the hell does this guy actually want? Is he looking for a girlfriend, a lover, a bff? He is straight-up confusing me at this point; he obviously knows that Jang Mi has feelings for Gi Tae, yet he is allowing himself to be hurt. We know he saw them kissing, yet he played it off like he didn't see, then later when he and Se Ah see our OTP holding hands, he basically admits to knowing of her feelings for GT and was being deliberately oblivious. So, from hence I am going to need him to walk around with a placard, billboard, flyers, or anything for that matter that clearly indicates his intentions and what it is that expects from this "relationship" with JM.

2) Kang Se Ah - This chick just does not know when to quit! Seriously, you see a man buy a ring for his wife (Ha!) to propose for a second time (Heh) and you just go blurting it out at random trying to score some brownie points with the family. Granted, she didn't know daddy was a worthless sleazeball (Too harsh?), but still shouldn't you have enough social awareness/common sense to think that - maybe he was planning to surprise his wife in a romantic setting, just maybe? This girl just does and says whatever she feels like, whenever she feels like. Also, could someone explain to me why when she saw GT and JM holding hands she was all hurt and dejected. Didn't GT make it perfectly clear last episode that she was not the one? Kang Se Ah, "You are the WEAKEST link. Goodbye!!"

3) Dad (Sleazeball, Richard Simmons, Richard Simmons, etc) - Is this guy trying to get found out, or is he simply the dumbest cheater who has ever lived. I mean, seriously, first you take your lover out on a date in full view of the public - Ok, maybe, just maybe, you thought no one you knew was going to see you guys, and perhaps if JM wasn't on a date with Plank (Ed, Edd n Eddy anyone?) no one he knew would have recognized him; but still, take better precautions, dammit! Then he goes out in the middle of the day and buys a ring for his mistress, himself, in person. The only conclusion I can come to is that: 1. He wants his philandering ways to be found out so he can get out of his marriage or 2. Dude's dumb.

4) Joo Jang Mi - I am going to need you to stop running from your feelings and cut YR loose. The amount of times she mentioned doing this or that for the sake of YR this episode was quite unnerving. It is clear to EVERYONE, even to the stones on the ground that she has feelings for GT and as much I don't feel anything for YR (I don't like him, I don't hate him; he's just there) stringing the poor boy along is just not right. Look at her reaction when he tried to kiss her this episode and after the phone rang, the speed at which she got out of that embrace to answer the...

(cont'd).... phone - could put Usain Bolt to shame. Someone said before (I think it was on Dramabeans) that she is so afraid of being alone, that she would be with anyone, and that is exactly what I see happening now, she has feelings for GT but doesn't think he could love her so she's prepared to run to Plank, I mean YR, to escape and hide from her feelings and also so she doesn't have to be alone. As much as I want my OTP together, (the good Lord knows I am captain/vice-captain/first mate/etc on the GT/JM ship) I think JM needs to spend some time alone (not dating) and sort out her abandonment issues.

5) Gong Gi Tae - I am perhaps most annoyed with GT this episode, dammit, stop being so bloody passive! You like the girl, you don't want her to go, TELL HER!! Why must you keep it all bottled up inside, tell the girl how you really feel. You know, we know, everyone around you knows, now you just need to let her know. You know she's not that fast on the uptake, and with everything you've told her to this point (you want to be alone, etc) who can blame her. So, I'm going to need to man the hell up and go get your girl.

Thanks for the recap! Episode 9 was a bit of a letdown cos it was mainly soo pointless, but I enjoyed it nonetheless because it was fun randomly seeing the leads on a holiday together (the moment Hyun Hee appeared I didn't quite like it anymore tho).
It was nice to see that these adults getting thrown into the mood and their differences barely mattered. Doesnt matter if they are successful plastic surgeons, a spoiled mama's boy, a big dreamer chef wannabe heartthrob or a too-nice-for-her-own-good girl --- at the end of the day, when you have the sea, the sand, the drinks, the food: none of them could resist the joy of it all.

But this episode covered up for all the flaws of episode 9 and made me love it all throughout yet again. Our OTP finally realises their feelings for each other and that moment in the kitchen (despite their denials by saying that to each other they're nothing but scam partners) sealed the deal for me. They're comfortable with each other and they want the best for each other. Now we just need them to understand that being together forreal is the solution!

And I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion but I'm firm I'm still loving our second leads. They dont seem THAAAT typical at all to me. Yeo Rum could be such a better and more pitiable character if acted better. The actor is limited and he cant quite deliver depth, but despite that, I pitied him anyway - because of Jang Mi. I love JM and KT so much but cant deny their flaws. It's not fair for JM to keep assuring YR he's the one for her, because it's just something she says to assure herself that she doesn't love KT, BUT she's saying it to YR, and it's not wrong for him to be confused. However, as a guy who is afraid of attachment himself, when he saw them kiss and interact, etc - he wants to ignore it and assume it was an accident and confusion between two fake lovers and refuses to believe that he might get abandoned by a woman he likes again. Also, it wasn't cool for KT to initiate interactions with a taken woman which might trigger an affair while he himself is hurt from his cheating father. And after saying he likes her, kisses her, he goes back to saying nothing was serious. Even if it was not serious, they were doing things which can hurt YR. Small scale cheating, big scale cheating - it's all still wrong and I hope they realise it. All it needs is for JM and KT to apologise to him properly, and it'll be okay.
As for Se Ah, I believe she's just got soooo much pride. She stooped so low last ep but it's because she's so lonely and desperate. She is manipulative, yes, but I dont think she really means much harm to our OTP. JM (altho a terrible one) and KT still has friends, but I dont think she does. She doesn't only love Ki Tae, but he seems to be her only best friend too. She enjoys being with him and I have a feeling that maybe because she was so in love, she felt herself losing control (something she loves to have) 3 years ago, and...

did the whole house thing to prove that even though she's in love with a guy, it's not gonna change the fact that she gets what she wants. She's filthy rich and probably have a shitty home life too, so it's not a shocker she acts that way. If there's one thing to learn in the world of the rich, it's to always try to gain the upper hand and look out for yourself, since you dont really know who the hell you can trust. However, as LollyPip said, unfortunately for SA, she did it at a time when KT was just starting to doubt marriage. Yes, it was stupid for her to do such a thing when he just explains how important the house is - but hey! At least she didnt go on and buy a huge mansion somewhere else, she tried to find a solution that would possibly please both of them (she should have told him tho, obvsly), as it will still partly be the house KT loves, but bigger as she wants it. They couldve talked it out, didnt have to break up, but KT was just at such a sensitive phase.

They're such flawed people, but I like em. I hope that she just gets the point now, and with 6 eps left, i hope our second leads can shift their attention to each other and stay away from our OTP as romantic partners, because I really want them all to stay friends. I hope they build a fun romance, because I MUST be not the only one who swoons over how Yeo Rum looks at Se Ah in the opening as if she's the most gorgeous thing in the world. Bc maybe she is, Sunhwa is just so pretty (and she's delivering good acting). Not saying Han Groo is not tho, because she is beautiful too.

Now about Mum: wow. She gets me all the time. She tries so hard, so so so hard to keep the facade, to the point that people were starting to lose faith - and in some ways YR and SA are so similar to her in this way. But then there she is, finally breaking down, and wow Kim Hae Sook pulled it off sooo well. She just didnt want to cry, because i bet if she did it would be so hard to stop. And now that she is, i just want to give her a biiig hug. Love her. Love the character. I dont know how Dad can go around that great woman, cheating, and STILL act like an ass. Still can't believe he didn't take the water himself, it's not that hard dudeee. Maybe there's more to the story, but for now, UGH.

Now...Hoon Dong and Hyun Hee....what!? Hoon Dong is an annoying irresponsible horny adorable loving sweetheart and loyalist. I dont mind him marrying HH for the child cos this might just be what he needs to grow up. And at first I dont mind HH seeming like she wants HD's money bc dude, money is a legit reason to like someone, it's uber realistic. But then she raped him. And is such a sucky friend for JM. So not cool! I hope she has more to the story, and I got those vibes when she (pretty much) obviously lied about her parents. It's probably more than poor girl wants to marry rich boy. Can't stand her now but if they give us a meatier story, I might enjoy it. She's also not a weak actress, so I'm...

Under-motivated, under-written, unlikeable and next to no screen time.

I don't think that likeability necessarily has anything to do with the goodness of the part. Actors can do some of their best work playing unlikeable characters. Under-motivated? I disagree, and I think there was a really good scene in this episode that gave insight into Hyeon Hee's motivation, making explicit some things that have been implied throughout the drama so far. As for under-written and next to no screen time, that's what comes with being not the first, not the second, but the third lead. As to why she would take a third lead part at all, I would guess she thought the series would be high profile enough and found the character interesting and substantial enough to make it worth her while at this point in her career. I find Hyeon Hee as a character more intriguing than a lot of first kdrama first leads, and I like what Yoon So Hee is doing with her role. I don't think it's a terrible part at all.

0

I tend to think of characters as underwritten when their annoyance-to-entertainment ratio is out of balance. I put up with Ki-tae's mom, for example, because the amount of annoyance that she provides me is outweighed by the emotional payoff of her connection with Jang-mi & the sympathy I feel for her.

Amount of screen time also factors into the formula somewhere. In episode 8 (wedding dress episode, right?) I started to get frustrated because frigid momma's annoyance factor skyrocketed along with her screen time, and none of the characters delivered her the righteous smackdown she so greatly deserved (thus a very high annoyance factor & a very low entertainment factor).

It is a highly complicated formula that looks a little something like this:

(annoyance / entertainment) x screen time = level of underwritten-ness

Until episode 10, Hyun-hee didn't really even enter my radar as a blip in the universe. I didn't care about her enough to even register her presence. I'm gonna have to back-up AJ in this--I think she's pretty underwritten. When you find yourself actively BORED by a character who could be either sympathetic or deliciously eeeevil, you know there's something wrong with how they're developed.

I love all the hug scenes between Jang-mi and Gi-tae! While the first hug (in the bathroom after Jang-mi unlocked the door) was more like a thank-you-for-finding-me-in-here hug, this second one is like a thank-God-I-found-you-I-don't-wanna-let-you-go hug..and randomly the Mariah Carey's song Thank God I Found You was playing in my head LOL. I find both scenes are so beautifully poignant.
If Gi-tae isn't sure of what he feels about Jang-mi before, I guess it is about time he finally realizes that he really needs her in his life. Can't wait to see what he's going to do about it next, hopefully he'll see what's already in his heart instead of fighting and denying the feelings. Jang-mi on the other hand, is burdened with the guilty conscience towards Yeo-reum for the change of heart. And no, I don't pity Yeo-reum because I've never felt that he truly loves her, and I don't think she sincerely loves him either. As for Gi-tae's mom, I hope she'll find the courage to confront her husband's infidelity. That man seriously had gotten away for far too long already. I can't believe we always forgot to criticize him before, but perhaps that's because he got less screen time compared to the other annoying characters. Lucky bast**rd, him.
Looking forward for next week episodes, though it seems like a lifetime *sigh*

Finally, Gi Tae admits to himself that he wished Jang Mi was by his side! He has dug himself a hole so deep...He should TELL her that to her face. I hope he tells her soon...This has dragged on too long. Maybe Grandma can shake some sense into him....

Jang Mi had to end their sham relationship because her family had put up everything they own to look good in front of Gi Tae's rich family.I still don't feel sorry for Gi Tae's Mom because she tried to manipulate Jang Mi's Mom and shame her into buying expensive wedding items her family couldn't afford. Bad Mom and worst future Mother-in Law. I'm glad Jang Mi sock it to her. She deserved it.

Are KT's grandma and aunt from his dad's side or mom's side. I remember the sub for one of the episode has the aunt calls KT's brother-in-law, but based on her behavior toward KT's mom it seems to me the aunt is more like the sister of KT's dad than the sister of KT's mom.

Jang Mi is the kind of person this family needs and I think they already know, so I'm waiting for all of them to come to her, not only Ki Tae :D
Btw, that kiss was good! Not that we could see much, hehe!! But they have great chemistry. Hope the writers make good use of it in the coming episodes :D

This episode, Oh My God. It really broke my heart into a million tiny pieces. I've never seen an episode which so clearly defined how isolated characters are from one another. Everyone here was so involved in their own fears and inadequacies and fantasies, so paralyzed with hesitation - I think the grandmother's presence at the end will be the explosion that finally cracks through everyone's protective shell to let them communicate with one another.

So much of this episode was in the little details - Jang Mi's mother's internal dialog, realizing her counterpart was not even a little bit sincere (and deciding that she was going to make sure that JM couldn't possibly be embarrassed by their showing at the wedding. That conscious decision made me love that character so much, because it was clear she was trying to make up for their parenting failures.)

In my comments on the last episode, I wondered if Se Ah practiced her lines in front of the mirror, and...HA! Yes, she does, that little sociopath. Now that character takes on a whole new dimension of scary, because psychopaths do that - they don't feel real emotion, so they teach themselves to fake it. I wonder, was that her natural state, or did she learn it from Ki Tae's mother?

And Yeo Reum! ::clutches heart:: Oh my god, I just wanted to say "Oh, come here, sweetie, Mama will make it all better!" One of the things I especially liked was him testing the waters so see if his suspicion was correct. Wondering to himself if he mis-read the signs, letting her know and giving her a chance to speak up (ah, this is killing me), and finally, berating her for not being discreet (did she forget he was living there?) Even better, what he finds hurtful isn't physical attraction between JM & KT - it's the emotional connection symbolized by their clasped hands. Her response to his pain, which she'd initially offered to Yeo Reum. He thought her open heart was his, but now he's hurt to find she's offered it to someone else, as well.

When JM asks KT if he likes her, I also thought he was laughing at her closed eyes - I think, however, that Lollypip was right. She (and I) misinterpreted that, and so the two of them talked sideways of each other. Kids, this is why it's important to speak plainly.

>Yeo-reum tells them that he lives at Ki-tae’s house now too and that he and Ki-tae snuggle at night

::snerk:: Yeo Reum is the Captain Jack Harkness of K-drama. And I'm ok with that. ;)

I was pleased to see Ki Tae's mother humanized - her gasping sobs at the end were so heart-breaking. But I don't know that I buy Jang Mi's entirely too generous assessment of Mother's motives. I think that KT's mother chose Se Ah as an ally for herself, not as a loving partner for her son (and I think she didn't even realize that Se Ah was manipulating her the way she herself manipulated everyone else.)

I thought it was telling that the biggest breakthrough was KT admitting to himself that he would keep on pretending to be in a fake marriage just to stay next to JM...while she is eager to leave because she believes him when he says it's only fake.

How long will it take KT to say it out loud? (And honestly, Jang Mi, you should run. That family is all kinds of dysfunctional, and you will be stuck with them at family gatherings for the rest of your life. Think about it.)

as for jang-mi, it says so much for her that she not just made a scene, but chose to make it poignant. not only having ki-tae's interest in mind, but also understands how the mother thinks (who made her life hell). and on top of it says it all boldly to her face. best female character ever.

Can someone clarify what KT meant at the end with his voice over as the camera pans his crying mother? He says "of all people, I did not want you to find out."

I take it to mean that he did not want his mother to find out how angry he has been with her nor that she really the cause of his loneliness and desire to never marry.

But, I am not sure.

I assumed that he meant his mother - that he didn't want her to know just how badly she'd screwed him up. I mean, don't we all want to keep that sort of thing hidden from our parents?

Not that most parents don't already know - but the plausible deniability is important, especially to Ki Tae's mother.

Plus, he knew it would hurt, and while he's acting out in childish ways against his mother, he still loves her.

I had a completely different interpretation. Before the magazine shoot from hell, Ki Tae looked like he had a good relationship with his mother, i.e., had no clue his family was falling apart.

I took it as something he said to her three years ago, "Of all people, I did not want you to find out (about Dad cheating on you)."

I was already crying from Jang Mi pleading with Mom to find real happiness, then I lost it when he said this line. Did I misinterpret it?

That's an interesting perspective - one I hadn't thought of before. But since the last thing Jang Mi said to the MIL was "the one who made him alone is you", I assumed that Ki Tae's remark was connected to it.

Oh, this show! So many layers of possible meaning to all the important scenes!

Noticed no one has mentioned JM smashing the fake pink diamond. I rationalized it as JM having an experienced eye due to working in a high end department store - spotting fake from genuine goods. But the fact that KT'S mother only used a paste ring also speaks volumes - she has so much to make up to Jangmi. These days, there are any number of near diamonds (I.e. industrial diamond, cubic zirconium etc) which approximate the hardness of a real diamond. And the fact that she couldn't use real gold for a firm setting.

There is also the symbollic demonstration that JM is the real deal and cannot be fooled (as part of her character development.
