Kim Nam-gil joins Ryu Seung-ryong, Suzy in sageuk film

Kim Nam-gil (Shark) always does well in sageuk (see: Queen Seon-deok, his current swashbuckling hit Pirate), so I’m happy to hear that he’s sticking to his forte in his next project. He’ll be joining the historical film Dorihwaga, named for a type of traditional pansori song. Heavy-hitter Ryu Seung-ryong (Roaring Currents) is headlining as the pansori writer and creator of dorihwaga, while Suzy (Gu Family Book) plays his student and the first female pansori singer of Joseon.

The film takes place in the era of Gojong (late 19th-century Joseon), and Kim Nam-gil has been cast to play Heungseon Daewongun, Gojong’s father. The daewongun was a title for fathers of kings who did not rule, in this case because Gojong was adopted into a different family to continue the former king’s line. But because Gojong was young when he took the throne, his father was immensely powerful and basically ruled in his place.

Ryu Seung-ryong will play Shin Jae-hyo, a famous writer of pansori who was the first to train women as pansori artists. Suzy plays his favorite student, who eventually becomes the country’s first formal female pansori singer. She catches the eye of Heungseon Daewongun when she performs at a royal celebration, and he uses his considerable political force to keep her tied to him, despite the fact that she’s in love with her teacher, whom she admires and respects.

Well that just sounds doomed no matter which way you look at it, though mostly I’m thinking that she seems too young for everyone on the cast. Directing is Lee Jong-pil (Born to Sing), who’ll be reuniting with Kim Nam-gil after collaborating on the music documentary Ensemble (clearly music is his thing). Song Sae-byuk (Do-hee) co-stars as a famous male pansori artist.

Dorihwaga begins shoots this month for a release in 2015.

Suzy is never going to be able to keep up with Kim NamGil's acting. He's on a whole other level.

And yeah, he'll probably die. Oh well.

She is too young, in every way, for this part. She is too young in age, she is too young in terms of acting experience...both of her costars are actors way out of her league.

I expect a wide-eyed, one-dimensional portrayal which as usual will be adored because she is just as cute as a basketful of kittens barfing rainbows.

only one thing that i have to point out, she is not too young for the character, as she is 19 going 20 and if i am not mistaken the character she is playing was 21/22.

As true as that is
we have to remember that kim nam gil acted with han ga in so really anyone else is an upgrade to me. Suzy is not a great actress by anymeans but she doesn't piss me off like many other actresses I could name.

Chae sun is actually 22 yrs old so it's not really so far from Suzy's age of 20.

Kim Nam Gil will most likely be an antagonist in this movie. I can sense his inner Bidam while trying to make Chae sun his concubine. God please no rape scene TT.

sigh...Suzy as a pansori singer?? why? they already got Ryu seung-ryong and Kim nam-gil, why not cast a REAL pansori singer to play the role, like Im kwon-taek did in " Sopyonje" and "Chunhyang" ??
this bullshit reminds me of a Peking-opera movie Han-geng and another popular actor did...their peking-opera scene were soo bad it gave me goosebumps but ofcoz fangirls were like "oppa trained soooo hard for this role!! ya're all haters!!" smh

Ryu Seung Ryong and Suzy!!!!!

Their age and acting talent has a very wide gap!!!

I'm all for noona romances and ajhusshi romances but this is just too much...LOL :D

I don't think they will emphasize the love story. I hope so or I'll die coz it's so awkward.

From other sources the teacher has feelings with his student but I'm not sure if the student has feelings with his teacher too lol. Basically the 2 elders have a crush with the young singer and they all end tragically. aigooo

The age gap doesn't bother me that much

The talent gap, now......not that Korean entertaiment seems to give a damn about talent in their young actresses these days, literally all you need to get leads these days is to be pretty and have either idol status at a big kpop agency (Suzy), or connections that let you get away with being untalented and unprofessional.

yes and so many dramas are crap now because they are casting based on looks and popularity before talent

You mean you're fine with "oppa" romances, which are the inverse of noona romances; an "ahjusshi (or ahjumma) romance" would necessarily imply a very large age gap. Most oppa/noona romances have an age gap no more than twelve or so years (which can still be considerable depending on the looks/chemistry/characterization, but still a ways off from Suzy and Ryu Seung Ryong's 24 year age difference). :-)

Seriously, this cast sounds good except for one. And as for that one, she can't even manage a fluffy drama like Dream High or GFB, this sounds way beyond her depth.

I hope Kim Nam-girl doesn't die here, though!

IMO You sound so pressed tbh. Just ignore Suzy and move on with your life. You don't need to come every single topic about her if you are so disgusted and morally disrespected with her presence in Dramabeans. Gosh people who have so much pride and prejudices really tick me off.

Your comment makes a lot of sense. And sensibility is what the internet is lacking these days.

(I thought Suzy did well in Gu Book.)

Me too I like Suzy too and I think she has a lot of potential.
Just because they have the freedom to demean people in the internet means it's ok and seeing these repetitive behavior is amusing esp in a site that supposed to be hoarded by people with sensibilities to deconstruct dramas and life experiences in general.

Pogo is entitled to her opinion and to say it. If you don't like, you stop being pressed and ignore it and move on.

Gosh, people who try to control other people's free speech really tick me off.

I don't see how her comment evinces "pride" exactly.

And as a good portion of this site revolves around commenting and reacting to casting news, both positive and negative reactions are to be expected. As long as she's not being viciously hateful and personal with her attacks, she's perfectly entitled to repeatedly voice her displeasure when someone whom she thinks is untalented repeatedly gets cast in high-profile projects.

It's a play on words. Pride and Prejudice. . .(I thought it was clever, MIKAN.)

...I understand the P&P reference, I got that she was thinking of the book when she used that pair of words, but I'm not sure that qualifies as a play on words, since I didn't read her comment as being deliberately arch? Obviously, she's seriously! upset! that pogo is a vocal critic of Suzy's acting career on this site. It seemed more like perhaps she'd automatically strung the two words together due to the P&P association without realizing that "pride" doesn't really apply in this situation. But...not a big deal either way.

I just find his/her statement very proud and conceited (it's something negative for me of course)

I don't particularly understand the need to invest much time and effort demeaning Suzy every single opportunity these people have against her just because she's not up to par with his/her standard. I mean I have my own set of actors that I dislike and I just ignore their works altogether. The behavior is abnormal and immature tbh. That makes me wonder if these kind of propaganda are a fan culture trend? If so then yes it explains why.

Well…above this comment (reply 6.2) Pogo state Suzy as "untalented and unprofessional".
Untalented is OK, as personal opinion…but saying "unprofessional" because her acting doesn't match her taste is overboard which I consider as viciously hateful attack.

I can't found foul words of Pogo, he/she is only saying his/her opinion about the acting of her.... Which is I think is better if she could read all the comments here, because this is challenge of her to prove that all who posted here against her talent are wrong. There are advantage for good and bad criticism, it is only how you handle it.... If use this for positive attitude therefore, you have a positive outcome.... Good Luck for all the cast I hope it is a good movie and hit one. For the writer.... I don't care if Kim Nam Gil will die again as long as his death have an essence on the story that really touch the heart of the viewer.

Kim Nam-gil! Glad he's the antagonist, now he has to do something other than stare enigmatically and die. Though Suzy is not great, I prefer her to some other flat actresses (she was decent in Architecture 101). However...yea this casting will take a special finesse of the director to overlook, and I doubt it will completely destroy the movie as long as she doesn't have to carry reacting to the (inevitable) tragedy. Who knows she'll probably learn a thing or two as she's in good company. Don't know how they'll work around the singing; hope she lip syncs well. On a random note I'm really not used to his face without a mustache took me a second to recognize him ha ha.

I'm hoping that Suzy will do just fine in this role as a young pansori student. Her singing is decent and should translate into pansori. Or maybe I'm still happy the Eunji knocked in out of the park in Trot Singer and hope that Suzy will be as successful transitioning.....

Both talented actors are goin to make her look so out of place..seeing the casting nowadays just make me sad

Some people who still do not know why the fantasy sageuk she was in did not do as well as expected because she is so pretty, but pretty does not make up for second lead acting in a lead role.

Something is wrong where there are swarms of good male actors but good female actors are few and far between.

Can't wait to watch this when it's out!

somebody translate this interview:

thanks
