Jang Hyuk and Oh Yeon-seo consider MBC historical fantasy

Does Jang Hyuk never sleep? I don’t know if he’s just a workaholic or if MBC is paying him money by the truckload, but he’s up for his third MBC drama project in less than six months. He’s going from Fated To Love You to a drama short with Jang Nara, to a possible new series come January. The new historical drama is called Shine or Go Crazy, and will be a fusion fantasy romance set in the Goryeo era.

Being courted for his leading lady is Oh Yeon-seo, who’s just coming off of MBC’s big hit weekend drama Jang Bori Is Here. I’m thinking that MBC’s casting meeting went like this: Jang Hyuk wins ratings! Oh Yeon-seo wins ratings! Night Watchman wins ratings! How can we combine these three things? And Shine or Go Crazy was born.

The drama is about a fictional Goryeo-era prince who is first in succession for the throne. He belongs to a royal secret society, and is dogged his whole life by a prophecy that he will turn Goryeo into an ocean of blood someday. His character is meticulous and bold, and is especially good at making quick decisions on his feet.

The heroine is the last princess from Balhae (there are only eight years of overlap in these two kingdoms), and is skilled in many areas, including astronomy, geography, and the art of war. She’s fated to bring light to the Goryeo prince, and she’s described as spunky and wise, and a believer in fated love. The drama will depict their palace romance, between a cursed prince and a princess of a lost nation. It sounds potentially cool… as long as the “or go crazy” part isn’t literal. That’s a pretty big if, huh?

Shine or Go Crazy follows Pride and Prejudice (which follows Night Watchman) and premieres in January.

Ahh all these Sageuk sound so good on paper and nothing has really picked up my interest when presented on screen. But... I'm up for this. So much.

I wasnt too fond of Jang Hyuk before FTLY and while that drama got so ridiculous, I loved him in it. I'm excited for this, I think the premise is super interesting and having a female lead who's also in the same ranks as the male lead is kinda awesome! The class divide can be fun, but also a bore. I like the equality for once.

Well, he was shirtless basically in the whole 24 eps of Chuno. He's playing a prince here. Any chance that a prince in a fusion sageuk might go shirtless as well? It's fusion, so anything is possible, right?

Slave vs. Prince... Seems a bit like a tall ask, but hey, when you have someone as hot as Jang Hyuk, why would you ever waste such potential?

Also, Chuno is amazing! If the makers of Chuno and Fugitive: Plan B are behind this, then come what may, I'm in!

I don't see why a Goryeo prince can't engage in a session or two of midnight bare-chested, glistening with sweat, sword dancing, errr I mean, practice? Except it's going to be filmed in mid winter, crud.

They have natural hot springs in Korea. And every crown prince needs a little mid-winter r&r to settle his mind, right? *hopes*

Yep. They are completely trying to cook a rating hit with magical ingredients. Like it worked before... *sighs* I feel like recently all the channels are panicking because of the low ratings & some of them are scared to try anything new or a bit daring.
Good luck to JH but this sounds like a cliché sageuk: The beginning will be interesting & cute & then once in the palace it will be intrigues & backstabbing & random deaths... *Yawn*.

yeah, they watered down elements of Arang for Gu Family Book, then watered it down some more for Night Watchman, and now this....I want to know who the writer is before I even form an interest.

But Jang Hyuk is truly jjang!

You're right Pogo. Arang & The Magistrate was indeed ahead of the curve, a trendsetter, and the progenitor for the subsequent kdramas (you mentioned) all of which have tried and failed to replicate Arang's success.

I only wish Arang had got the ratings success it deserved....it was ahead of the curve in so many ways tat it makes me even more determined to watch the writer's next work (the upcoming Misaeng)

AatM did decently enough and got Lee Jun-ki/his pairing with Shin Mina a lot of praise but Gu Family Book was a bigger hit (probably because of Lee Seung-gi's popularity) despite having a female lead who couldn't act at all.

"Night Watchman wins ratings?"

^^ The question of the day.

Love Jang Hyuk, but wish they courted Lee Yoo-ri (who was also in JBIH) instead. I still remember her in RM. ;)

Night Watchman actually didn't do badly ratings wise. For their slot they came in Number 1 on numerous occasions.

Not much competition for ratings in that slot. Even Secret Door wasn't able to shake them for the lead spot for long.

It wins ratings because it is cheesy (as a matter of fact I call Sadam the "Cheez Wiz"), somewhat entertaining, and few get emotionally invested in it. I just graded a bunch of mid-semester tests while watching ep 21, and I didn't care that I was missing subtitles because I could follow along. I've never been able to do that with any other drama. So yeah, it is a mindless watch and I am never disappointed with it because I don't expect much. I was excited with My Secret Hotel and look where that got me. I'm not even watching the last two eps of that mess.

I also had higher expectations of MSH than Night Watchman and I got burned much more from the mess that it turned out to be. Entirely my fault, because I dropped NW much faster than MSH.
Easy watch is higher ratings, never looked at it that way. Weekend dramas are imo far from easy(make me very uncomfortable...) and they get a lot more audience. Could it be because Koreans like to watch tv on the weekend more?

"She’s fated to bring light to the Goryeo prince, and she’s described as spunky and wise, and a believer in fated love."

Your word play there with 'fated' was pretty intentional, wasn't it, GF? But you should know that every time we hear or see that word - well at least a few of us Hyukkie fans - it creates these earthquakes inside us and turns our system all topsy turvy.

So...be a little gentle on us, sister. :)

Looks like Oppa Love will complete the holy trinity of web drama, drama special and drama drama to ease our eternally hungry hearts. It's raining Oppa Love everywhere!

Please don't cast Oh Yeon So!!! I kind of liked Jang Bori buuuuut mhm her with Jang Hyuk? I don't think they quite match... I mean Jang Hyuk has chemistry with just about anybody! heck he'd have chemistry with a stick but my issue here is Yeon So... I'm watching this drama either way so I hope, if she does sign on, that she makes me swallow my doubts about her.

I want to watch "Jang Bori Is Here", lately I have found weekend dramas to be quite fun to watch with wonderdul characters and I don't know these kind of dramas make you feel at home for some reason.

Here's the thing: I find this interesting. I might watch, especially is Jang Hyuk (oppa or ahjussi?) comes on board... I have to say that in terms of Oh Yeon Seo I don't care either way, she's lukewarm water to me... I liked her in Jang Bo Ri but not enough to say she was the motor of the drama, I kept watching for Kim Ji Young (Bi Dan) and for Kim Ji Hoon (Jae Hwa)... So we shall see.

Oooooo. I mean, a project like this depends on a lot of elements to make it good and I refuse to get my hopes up about it like I did with Night Watchman, but I do really like the sound of the relationship between the leads. It definitely sounds like it has the potential to tell a really original story and one that's sweeping and romantic too. And with this casting? Sold. I am wondering what elements will make it a fantasy though.

LOL, though I am concerned, because isn't Jang Hyuk ALSO doing that one bizarre cable show (that I wouldn't be able to explain the plot of if I tried because it's just that strange) as a side character or something?

the webtoon Love Cells?i don't think they will have much screen time as the web has most likely 10-15 min and the main will be the leads but i think they might already finished filming that, but i still want to see the karate ajushi, might as well make a karate kid out of the hero,no?he an win points with the girl he wants to impress,no?

If you are talking about a web drama, Jang Hyuk is a cameo. They just wrote his name big in news articles for promotional purpose, but he's really just a cameo...Official poster says so :P

I think it could be interesting if say Jang Hyuk were to be half mentally unhinged from the beginning and instead of a big bad the enemy he had to fight was his own mental illness. I suppose that's too much to ask for.

It's too bad I can't get into saegeuk's with a few exceptions, I mean heck I even dropped Three Musketeers which I was loving, but you know thinking about it I don't really miss it.

BORI bORI?? Umm... no, didn't like her in the drama. wasn't sure if it was the acting or her character, probably both. The antagonist on the other hand, that lady can act. Loved the evil woman more than Bori Bori. Why didn't the evil lady from Jang Bori be in this. Jang Hyuk is awesome! Really love him! jeez, hmm, I guess I can fast forward all parts and just watch Jang Hyuk parts.

OYS, i just realize her from her recent weekend drama.
I never knew that she was such an amazing actress as i remember her as the annoying sister inlaw before. Her chemistry with her co stars are always great. In fact i hate the actress who acted as the villain with passion. One dimensional face and too plastic for my liking. A bit creepy

Janghyuk is no doubt will be amazing in any roles given to him but his choice of dramas tend to be a hit or miss.
Seeing him back on the screen is of course a pleasure.

She has become my fave actress and she has been so stunning and standing out in the acting department lately. I'm a bit worried about the age gap btw them though..
but as long as it's Oh yeon seo..and a plus of Jang Hyuk is to watch for

I read somewhere that Oh Yeon seo is courted for another comic remake drama too. Is it true? she seems more to be confirmed for this one
