News bites: November 29, 2014

Sung Dong-il, Kwon Sang-woo

  • After suffering from delays, Private Investigator is moving forward again and has added Sung Dong-il (It’s Okay, It’s Love) to its cast. The movie will be directed by Kim Jung-hoon (Petty Romance), who actually wrote the script and won an award for the screenplay way back in 2006. Attached to the movie since April, lead Kwon Sang-woo (Temptation) will play a detective novel aficionado — when his friends get mixed up in a deadly crime, he’ll try to solve the mystery on his own. Filming finally begins next March. [Osen]
  • In a surprising scheduling move, JTBC’s Seonam Girls High School Investigators will premiere on December 16th at 11pm, at an hour that’s typically been reserved for variety programs. Based on the popular eponymous book about five girls who attend the same high school and form an investigative team to solve unsolved mysteries after school, the show has cast mostly newbie actresses in the leading roles: Hye-ri, Kang Min-ah, Stephanie Lee, and Lee Min-ji. The more experienced Jin Ji-hee (Can We Love) rounds out the group of girls, and a few veterans, Lee Seung-yeon (The Great Seer) and Kim Min-joon (Romance Town) have signed on to play older characters. [SBS fun E]

  • Seo Shin-ae, Lee Sung-kyung

  • Seo Shin-ae (Potato Star 2013QR3) has signed up to play the adolescent daughter of Song Seung-heon (When A Man Loves) and Uhm Jung-hwa (Witch’s Romance) in Wonderful Nightmare — and I officially feel old. That the two can now credibly play dad and mom to a teenage girl makes me feel ancient. The movie sounds cute, however, and rather similar in plot to The Family Man. In it, Uhm Jung-hwa is a single and ambitious hotshot lawyer who has everything going for her until she’s in an accident which causes her to lose consciousness. When she comes to, she’s an ordinary housewife, married to Song Seung-heon (Hmm, doesn’t sound like much of a “nightmare” to me?) and mother to a sassy teen who’s wise beyond her years (Seo Shin-ae). Uhm spends time in this alternate universe for about a month, and no doubt she will come away from the experience with a different perspective on life’s priorities. Filming’s already begun, and the movie is expected to be released in the first half of next year. [XSports News]
  • Kim Sung-ryung (Heirs) and Lee Jong-hyuk (Dating Agency Cyrano) still haven’t made decisions on whether or not they’ll play a married couple in MBC’s upcoming weekend drama, Equator Flower, but Lee Sung-kyung (It’s Okay, It’s Love) has been offered the role of the daughter abandoned by Kim Sung-ryung’s coldly ambitious woman. The show will focus on the mother-daughter reunion, and will air in February or March after the conclusion of Legendary Witch. [Herald]

  • Lee Chung-ah, Kim Jin-woo

  • Lee Chung-ah (Wonderful Mama) and Kim Jin-woo (She’s So Lovable) are the leads in the last of KBS’s drama specials for the year, The Bride Who Wore Sneakers. The story unfolds over one night, and the plot details we’ve been given are disjointed: Lee boards the subway wearing a wedding dress paired with sneakers, and Kim’s the man who photographs her and uploads the pictures to Twitter. She’s a really, really unlucky person, while he’s the writer of a webtoon. I’m not exactly sure how the two end up getting together, but they fall in love over the course of the evening. The Bride Who Wore Sneakers airs on December 7th. [Star News]
  • Clara (Emergency Couple) has been cast in an as-yet unnamed Hong Kong movie, which will start filming in mid-January. She promoted the project during a recent appearance on Korea Entertainment Info, a Chinese program that highlights all things Hallyu and which airs on Shanghai TV. [MBN]
  • Kim So-hyun (Reset) will play the daughter of Park Shin-yang (Sign) in a body-swap comedy movie based on the novel Daddy and 7 Days by Japanese writer Igarashi Takahisa. It will be directed by writer-director Park Gyu-tae (Man On The Edge) and filming will begin in December. [TV Report]

No news yet, then if there is going to be a season 2 of Liar Game??

I think it's definitely in the works, but they likely won't announce it straight away. Just like with Misaeng, the production company's going to need some time to figure out where things are heading and what slot to air the second season in. I adore Liar Game too, and I feel like that ending guarantees us a second season (plus our three leads essentially confirmed it with that "see you in season two!") so I can't wait until the official announcement is made!

@ Shalini,

You sound like you work at tvN or jvN or something. You give us info like you are sitting in that room during those meetings :-). "Take it from @ Shalini, it must be true :-) " You never cease to amaze me: student, blogger (at night), reporter for tvN (and definitely for Liar Game :-) ), what other job descriptions (or hobbies) can we add to your name?
So, do we go through you to get an interview with LSY, SSR or KSE? :-) I would just LOVE to see you being the interviewer with LSY. I would want to be the camera person filming that. The spazzing would be out of this world, and that interview would take twice as long, because (I bet) you won't be able to contain yourself. I just love giving you a hard time. You know that right? :-)

@ GB, *Waves*

I LOVE this, "@ Shalini and Ivoire: Just reading you two makes me smile :-) " I am glad we can bring a smile to your face. It makes it worth our friendly banter :-)

Have a safe trip, and yes please, do check the Liar Game recaps to see our latest posts. Sorry I haven't posted yet, I was not feeling good at all :-( And when you come back, please feel free to comment when you have the time (or before you return, if you can, and if you wish), on the LG recaps (starting with the latest ones). I look forward to hearing about your trip :-)

Haha xD Rather than info, it's more like what I really want to be true :P And oh gosh, I'd probably be terrified if I were interviewing SSR, it's weird seeing him in the King's Face when all I can think about is how KDY laughed at the end! xD I'd probably be super self-conscious around someone as beautiful as KSE and as for LSY...I'd just be a puddle of jelly the moment he shows that dimple and says hi. It would be impossible to control myself around someone that perfect! xD
And I sure do know that? xD Feels awesome to know someone who gets my LSY spazzing though! :D

Huh. Wonderful nightmare sounds like this egyptian movie I watched a few years ago. Same story with a successful woman working at a marketing company. Refuses when her boyfriend proposes. Falls asleep on a plane and wakes to being a housewife with two kids and a husband (portrayed by boyfriend) but slightly overweight. She tries to woke up but cant and starts to enjoy her life with her fam. When she wakes up, she chases after the boyfriend and agrees to marry him

To me it sounds like 'Overboard' with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell.

And that movie was the inspiration for the Hong sisters' 2006 drama Fantasy Couple with Oh Jiho and Han Yeseul. :)

"Daddy and 7 Days" brings to mind the Jdrama "Papa to Musume no Nanokakan," which was done really, really well considering there is a whole lot of awkward to be had. I double checked; apparently they are not the same Japanese writer/source. Anyway, for those who like Jdrama, it's worth checking out. The father is a scream!

Note, I mean the father stuck in the daughter's body. Given the inherent differences Japanese carries for male and female speech patterns, vocab etc, there was plenty to draw on.

I feel old too. I still vividly remember Seo Shin Ae as Gong Hyo Jin's daugther in Thank You. And even Song Seung Hun and Park Shin Yang act as daddy now.

@ j2hr Hello,

I have not seen that many Kdramas (yet), compared to many of the commenters here, however I am certain that there are some loving mothers in Kdramas. A few that come to my mind (at the moment):

1--Yoo Jung-Hwa (in Angel Eyes)
2--Bang Young-Sun (The Queen Mother in "The King2Hearts")
3--Anna Laker (in Smile Again)
4--Jo Mi-Sun (in I Love You, Don't Cry)
5--Kim Min-Jae (in Life is Beautiful)
6--Song Na-Young (in Three Fathers, One Mother)
7--Kong Man-Ok (in Rooftop Prince)
8--Kang-To's mother (that is the name they give her on AsianWiki, in Gaksital)
9--Moon Soo-Ja (in I Love You, Don't Cry)
10--Park Bong-Sook (in My Name Is Kim Sam Soon)
11--Park Bok-Ja (in Ojakgyo Family/Brothers)
12--Kim Mi-Sook (in Ojakgyo Family/Brothers)
13--Song Ji-Sun (in Goddess of Marriage)
14--Hong Hye-Jung (in Goddess of Marriage)

These are the few I could think of. I am sure there are many more I couldn't recall at the moment, or that I don't know of (yet).

I do get your point about this however, "if we dont get crazy mother who loves to separate her child’s relationship, then we get one who loves money and power and abandon her kids," there seems to be many of those in Kdramas. I do think it is something we have come to expect in Kdramas.

Another awesome Korean actress I would like to mention:

16--Lee Kyung-Hee (in City Hunter)
17--Han Song-Jung (in Glorious Day: she is a good mom, and a good mother-in-law)). These two roles are played by the same actress.

add more awesome mom:
-Hye Sung's mom (I Hear Your Voice)
-Go Eun's mom (King Of Dramas)
-Son's Of Sol Phamacy mom

Awesome mother is rare, but more rare in sageuk what with political machinations and all.

@ kanz,

Thank you for adding "Go Eun’s mom (King Of Dramas)." Yes! She was awesome, threatening to kill Anthony, if he messed with his daughter again (I love that sign with her finger on her neck she made to Anthony, all mafia-like). I had forgotten about her. I could only remember Anthony's mom, and CSW's mom (and I don't know that she was really a good mom). And Anthony's mom did not have a lot of screen time with her son, though he seemed to love her, and they seemed to get along. So maybe she was a good mom to him? I think she did the best she could, considering her circumstances, and she encouraged GE to not give up on her son, telling her what he was really like (so she didn't break them up). I guess she could qualify as a good mom...

I have not seen the other 2 dramas you mentioned, so I can't comment on those. I will take your word for it though :-) Thank you for adding to the list of awesome moms in Kdramas. And I agree with this, "Awesome mother is rare, but more rare in sageuk what with political machinations and all."

If the directing for Private Investigator is anything like Petty Romance I'm excited. It had fun sequences when the protagonist (who was a manhwa artist) would imagine his drawings coming to life, or there would be anime acting out of the heroine's various...imaginations hehe. I see the same sort of setup working with an amateur detective hyped up on too many novels. Heck, either way I'm watching it since it sounds like something I would do.

Looking forward to what JTBC has to offer. And man does Lee Sung-kyung look unreal (in a good way).

Looking forward to Wonderful Nightmare, and Equator Flower if our married couple signs on.

GUYS soompi says YOO GUN (Yoo-na's yummy ex-boyfriend sunbae )is gonna be on Dr. Frost!!! I was hoping to get to see him again soon. Thank you dramaland.

Males, in particular, should not be consuming soy protein in any significant amount, let alone twice a day every day as Visalus advises.
As mentioned earlier, Visalus seriously isn't a gimmick.
