Morning beanies! A few weekly drama thoughts...

Bad Guys – I think this was honestly my favorite episode so far. I’m still nervous about the few remaining episodes. I think it could be brilliant but I also feel like some things might happen that won’t sit well with me. But I won’t know until I see it. I was glad though that they got rid of the outside cases since they were starting to feel forced, and the interplay of the main characters is the best part anyway. I’m actually hoping it’s not GT but GT’s boss behind it all. Remember in the beginning he says to the female cop (Sorry name blanking) that she basically shouldn’t go after him until she has something concrete? I think he may be more involved and he was the one who brought GT on in the first place.

Liar Game – This one is also getting SO good. I think out villain’s mask shattered pretty easily but there’s only two episodes left so I understand the push. The loose ends are starting to tie up and I can’t wait to see how they do it. I really like the dynamics of the leads and will be sad for it to end. I think overall the show is starting to show that overall people really aren’t all good or all bad and that it’s often those around us that can influence which direction we take.

Love Cells – I’m actually happy that this has taken a bit of a turn. Is it possible to be in love with a love cell/cat? I’m not sure at all that I understand the flashback but I had trouble getting behind him wooing an actress that he no connection with beyond her looks. And I couldn’t not like the actresses long-term love – he’s really a good guy and cares about her. But mostly I’m excited because I think Woo Bin will finally really show up in today’s episode!! Bring it.

Pride & Prejudice – Kang Soo you are the most adorable puppy ever. You are also far too young but I appreciate another gratuitous ab shot. Shallow? Yes. Overall I’m liking this show and it’s getting complex relatively quickly. I’m still not sure what to make of their boss. I don’t want him to be too bad or selfish but something is clearly going on that I don’t understand. I also can’t get a handle on the lead actress. It feels like she and Choi Jin Hyuk are in two different shows for me lol. He’s in on this being at least partially a romance and she’s just here for the lawyer aspect. Mostly I love Kang Soo and his puppy dog loyalty – such a mushball.

Sidenote: Choi Jin Hyuk - I’ve never been particularly sold on him. I’ve only seen him in two shows though and I think it was mostly his parts. He’s emoting so much more in this show. But this week I saw him when he was on Happy Together (old episode) and I found it pretty entertaining. He’s not what I was expecting at all.

Why is there no drama recap for Pride and Prejudice here in dramabeans? Even if it is just for episode 1? Most dramas get at least that. I was waiting for episode recap in order to see what the drama would be like... But since it seems to be not happening, I just watched episode 1, and ended up watching all available episodes at once. It is the only Kdrama I am watching right now. The Kdrama remakes of Jdramas - definitely a pass.

I think it's usually shows that in advance the recap team thinks they'll be interested in. Honestly I think nobody was sure what to make of P&P. I am enjoying the show but it's not whatever I was thinking it would be.

I too would love to read PnP recaps on dramabeans.
On a side note can anyone tell me why there are so many coincidences in kdramas? Do jdramas also have it? Seoul seems like a very small place judging by how everyone seems to bump into each other. Even in PnP their initial meeting was tough to swallow after the show revealed how he was connected to her brother's case.

I agree with most of what you say on P & P -- especially about the lead actress -- I feel like it is a really underwritten part -- while Chief Moon is overwritten ... I'm finding a little of him goes a very long way .. too much time spent, especially in Ep. 7, on his shtick and it slowed everything to a crawl.

Yeah Chief Moon really dominates and I'm not that intrigued by him. I think he's a key player and the actor is good but the character is still not that interesting to me and I feel like it feels like an ensemble more when he's not there.

aww I'm glad you're warming up to Choi Jin Hyuk. From my impressions so far, he's a humble, hardworking dude who is far more adorkable than he looks. That episode of him on Happy Together is hilarious and you get the sense of how long he's struggled in the industry before finally hitting a break with Gu Family Book. You should definitely check out the Running Man episode he appeared on with Woo Bin and Park Shinhye for Heirs. It's hilarious. It's too bad he doesn't appear on variety more often. I think he was scarred from Strong Heart.

I have to say, I'm really happy for him though. He was receiving a lot of flack on here when the Pride and Prejudice casting was announced, a lot of doubters / haters on his ability to carry lead in network drama. But he's proven them wrong with Emergency Couple (one of the only other few cable dramas to hit 5% ratings). I'm glad the ratings for P&P in Korea are double that of the other two Mon/Tues dramas. At least he's getting love from Korean audiences.

For the most part, P&P is enjoyable, could be better tho. They still need to work on pacing and development for the characters. Less Chief Moon is more. More main two lead cohabitation hijinks please. Less love triangle and more bromance please.

Wait, what happened on Strong Heart?!

Yeah, I thought the stories of him really did show how long he's been working at this and I also thought it was interesting/nice to see that people were drawn to him from the beginning and have been cheering him on for a while.

I actually saw that RM episode but I think it was one of the first episodes I saw and right when I was getting into kdramas so I don't really remember it (I've seen every RM on DramaFever so some of my original views have faded in my memory)...and it was because I was on a Woo Bin binge. Maybe I should go and re-watch!

He got a bit of flack on Strong Heart a couple years ago when he was promoting one of his SBS dramas. He had been on the show before, so I think he felt more comfortable the 2nd time around. He talked about love and how he had been in an intense and dark relationship with a noona (either before he became famous or when he was shooting Pasta) who was on and off with a boyfriend. He talked about how the noona was depressed and how he had tried to be good to her, but she'd always run back to the old bf, so it was a tumultuous relationship (he was like the 2nd lead in a kdrama). He couldn't get her out of the funk she was in and she eventually committed suicide. He talked about how her death made a huge impact on him.

A lot of haters / netizens criticized him for talking about it, saying he was trying to get sympathy and attention, but to me it was just another personal story like any other that people talk about in Strong Heart. I remember he was really frustrated with their reactions. I think since then, he's shied away from appearing on Variety shows. He probably only goes these days only if he really has to (like last year's Running Man Heirs episode) or if he wants to (like this year's Happy Together ep for Park Kyunglim and Park Joon-geum).

Here are the viki link to his episodes (no subs tho):

This is more light-hearted, talks about Donghae, his crush on Yuri, his weight problems:
http://www.viki.com/videos/168853v-strong-heart-episode-115

I think this is the one he talks about the noona, he gets really emotional about it, understandably:
http://www.viki.com/videos/169861v-strong-heart-episode-116

I've been a quiet fan of CJH's since I saw him in It's Okay Daddy's Girl (I watched it initially for eyecandy Suju's Donghae) but then my attention was immediately taken by CJH. I was surprised he wasn't more well-known then, but the drama was so crappy, I understood why. Nobody watched it. And then he played the 2nd lead in both I Need Romance (almost threw my comp out because the ending frustrated me so much) and Panda and Hedgehog (also a horrible drama but eyecandy for Donghae and CJH), which frustrated me to see, because he really doesn't belong in 2nd lead purgatory. But again, nobody watched those dramas either.

I was really happy for him when l Gu Family Book came along and put him on the k-drama map and the k-drama world finally knew who he was. It's kinda sad and ironic how he's now a "old rookie" due to his recent status as a leading man, yet he's been in the industry toiling for 8 years. Even sadder / more ironic when he's being nominated for "Best New Actor" conciliatory awards last year for GFB and Heirs. A huge honor for him, but still ironic when he's not exactly a newbie, but I guess it's better now than later, plus he probably appreciates it more now than if he had gotten famous earlier.

AND YES. Re-watch the RM episode, solely for the plungers scene and the bromance between him and Woo...

And part 2:

King’s Face – Anyone watching this? I’ve only seen the first episode and I’d love to know people’s thoughts. It’s interesting because there’s definitely a more modern sensibility despite nothing particularly modern happening. And for once it seems the father actually knows and encourages his daughter to cross dress. I’m mostly just happy about SIG and will try and catch up today. I also can see why he keeps getting hurt on set.

Pinocchio – I’m still not sure how I feel about this show. I see so many people who have either dropped it or think it’s the best thing since sliced bread. I’m enjoying moments and am liking each episode more and more. I do have issues with the setup and the million coincidences that it starts with. I also think that emotional moments really need to be earned and there are too many too soon for my taste right now. I do think the acting is good so it’s not about that. I honestly haven’t seen LJS in much but I find his face very plastic-y so it’s props to him that he’s overcoming my shallowness and I’m enjoying him in this role. I also think the second lead character is so bizarre and really enjoyed that everyone else thought he was a nutcase too lol. I’m still waiting for the reporting jobs to actually begin!! (Also pleasantly surprised that they found the father’s body so quickly – I was worried that was going to drag out for too long). Oh and is anyone else more intrigued by the older brother? I want more of his story.

And I’m one episode behind in Modern Farmers (which I just sleepily wrote as Modern Garden, sigh) as well as Cantabile. Guess what I’ll be trying to do at work today! I also started Mourning Grave but fell asleep (not because it was boring but because I’ve turned into an insomniac this week). It will be a busy catch up weekend!

----

And then extra questions. There are two shows that I haven't been watching because I was mostly worried about investing my time and then being worried about my reactions. So without too much spoilage (I know there has to be some) I would love responses from anyone watching. High School Love On - I was worried about the age gap between the actors. She is just so young for romance. Is it really romance-y? So things actually happen? She is an angel so I'm hoping there's sort of a way of having it but going around it? And is The Greatest Marriage still letting it work without her running to a man and getting married? I know that's a big spoiler....but I was so worried that show would just end in a way that would piss me off lol. Thanks for your thoughts!

I do have issues with the setup and the million coincidences that it starts with.

That's why I'm not watching Pinocchio. I can't suspend my disbelief for the whole Pinocchio syndrome to begin with, and the five million coincidences would just annoy me greatly. LJS looks cute to me (I did love him in IHYV and School 2013), but I've still got a PSH allergy that I haven't overcome (no offense to anyone, that's just how I feel). If there were actors in this that I really really loved, then maybe I'd watch Pinocchio, but from the recaps I'm sensing my patience would soon run out.

King's Face – sageuks just never work for me (I get bored), though I wish it were otherwise as I'd be quite interested in seeing something SIG is in.

I can't remember in detail how The Greatest Marriage ends (I did skip some episodes because I was bored/tired of I think the love rivalry), but there was definitely a mostly satisfying happy ending.

I haven't seen LJS in much so I've seen neither of those shows...although school 2013 is high in my queue. I don't have the same PSH issues as others and I think she's holding her own right now. But I also can't really advocate for this show since I'm not even sure what I think about it lol.

You might want to try King's Face even if you don't stick with it. SIG is pretty sassy for a sageuk prince. Yeah, I know, I said sassy. Not quite the word I want but close enough. And it worth watching the first ep for the fight sequence alone. <3 SIG

Pinocchio:
I'd usually agree on both accounts, concerning the unrealistic plot and a strong aversion towards Park's acting style, but I somehow enjoyed the first four episodes.

This is more of a comic book drama, and it is _consistent_ in its negligence of a realistic story, or realistic people (cue to Park's comic book acting style), but it has found some tone that, so far, worked. I'm not sure how they can keep this up (they "used up" most of the backstory stuff already), and my guess is that I will drop it eventually, but I appreciate the idea and I see why people with much less reserve towards the comic-booky genre like it.

You might well be right, but I can't get over the mental hurdle to even watch the first episode. I should add I'm pretty busy at the moment, so I'm being more selective about the dramas I'm watching, or even just trying to watch...

I don't mind the comic book genre per se, I loved Nodame Cantabile (J).

I've been waiting for Bae Soo Bin's character to redeem himself and am still waiting ... hmm. Meanwhile Park Si Yeon is still as awesome as ever (acting wise) although her character has become a bit passive.

I'm not watching Pinocchio because of the two leads. I agree with comments at the bottom about LJS's face and PSH's acting. It just feels weird to watch. The premise doesn't interest me as well. I'm hearing a lot of good things about it, but most from rabid Chinese fans. Watching its competitor Mr. Back now and I think it's going to be my last drama of 2014.

How are you? Screen keyboard @ work so pardon any mistakes.
I have been reading a lot this week - books on Russia, mostly, and articles. About Kremlins´paranoia and Putin being hostage to the information given by FSB...
So watched less dramas. also, PÖFF started, so I have gone to the cinema a couple of times. Tonight I will be going to see Seafog! I wonder if anybody of the movies´ team is present... hope I will not sleep in for work tomorrow, cause it end at midnight.and I watched a film Angels of Revolution by Aleksei Fedortšenko about a war against khanti people in northern Siberia - the Kazõm war and repressions, and the hatred towards avant-garde movement in 1930ies Russia. It felt surreal, the ideas of the time made no sense. but the cold brutality and lack of any empathy back then... so like someone. but then I realized that reality IS this surreal in Russia. controversial, reactionist and delusional. the idea of otherness and cultural difference does not sit well there. assume the worst of The Other... in a way just like Do Young in Liar Game. no guilt, no empathy, hanging on to some twisted logic. how are monsters created? but finally, today the biggest monster in indigenous areas is oil industry and business mentality...money.
watching Liar Game, and feeling scizophrenic. I am stunned by everyones performances. Best actor ensemble since White Christmas.
the way it is going, I have a feeling the orphanage WAS the Walden Two in this universe. maybe they indeed messed with Woo Jins´memory? anyway, seems like humanity is still not safe from people being manipulated and brainwashed until they lose their self , their free mind, sense of right or wrong, trust, compassion... it is possible. there are lies and falsed news and propaganda coming non-stop from television all across Russia. if the rest of the world cannot counter that, there is no point in militaray intervention. in the words of Da Jung, people need to decide who they want to be. or they lose. cause where is everyone standing? and lets not een discuss North Korea.
but I have to avoid watching anything cute with Shin Sung Rok until LG ends, cause he seems like such a sweet goof in real life. it would break the image of The Perfect Villain.
no question today, maybe instead you could tell me your most surreal film experience which puzzled you a lot

Oh, let us know what you think of Sea Fog!!

Liar Game really does have great casting. The characters in a way are all stereotypes but they breathe such life into them and the show is getting so good because of it.

I've seen so many people bring up White Christmas...I really need to track not down and watch it.

I will have to think in surreal film experiences. I know I've had them. I really love films and consume them like a crazy person...but then I often forget some of my experiences with them.

Surreal experiences off the top of my head:

Other: Black Orpheus/Orfeu Negro: It was my first foreign language film it came on Turner Classic and at the time I was unfamiliar with the Greek myth it was based on so everything about it confused and somewhat terrified me.

Korean: I'm a Cyborg and That's Okay: It was like being tied to a chair, eyelids forcibly kept open to witness the nightmares of a schitzo on acid. Started it a long time ago and still haven't finished it. The only character that didn't weird me out was Rain before I even knew who Rain was. I'll probably go back to it eventually but next time in broad daylight.

3-iron. After the ending, I'm still not entirely sure what the heck happened (i.e. how much was their reality or at some point was everything a visual metaphor or what have you), but out of the three this one somehow disturbs me the least.

Hello Friday OT! My first time being able to post so early on in the comments section.

Is anyone here following the Serial podcast? I'm non-American so I caught on slightly late - just this week - but I'm all caught up with the 9 episodes so far! It is such a surreal medium of storytelling - these are real people with real stories, but told in such a compelling way that sometimes it feels like a drama and that can get listeners swept in a frenzy.

Wondering if JB and GF have heard of this too and whether they're following - the victim was the daughter of a Korean migrant family and she seemed to fit right in at school.

I also watched Interstellar this week - kept me on the edge of my seat. Yeah the science isn't 100% accurate but I was definitely entertained.

Exams are coming up so I've not watched anything Kdrama related.

I also just started listening to Serial starting last week. It's reminding me a lot of the book In Cold Blood, although I think that Sarah Koenig is far less likely to employ dramatic license like Capote did. I keep going back and forth on who I think was guilty. I just know that he shouldn't be in prison because there was sooooooo much reasonable doubt in that trial, but that seems to be a concept that a lot of Americans just don't get.

Required fields are marked *

That's an interesting comparison, although I didn't read In Cold Blood. Yeah who knows how much information Koenig is holding back? At the same time, you can sense that she herself is swaying from guilty to innocent. I think that's what sets this apart from a typical journalistic endeavour or radio drama. It's really straddling both mediums.

I don't think it's that Americans don't understand the concept of reasonable doubt, but his case feels handled poorly in so many ways - collection of forensic evidence, collection of witnesses, the quality of legal advice and representation given to accused persons, etc. And of course there's the role of the jury - whether that caused his case to take this direction is another issue altogether.

I'm shocked that the former investigator on the show said the handling of this case, from the files, appeared to be "above-average". If this is above average, imagine what "mishandled" cases are like. If this is an accurate reflection of the American criminal justice system, it is scary indeed.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I was shocked to hear that too because I can't believe that any case where the star witness is constantly changing his story and the cops don't go "wait a second, last time you told us this..." can be considered well investigated.

The jurors admitting that they had issues with Syed not taking the stand was a big moment for me. It highlights a potential lack of understanding about the Bill of Rights, which is what keeps defendants from having to testify. Of course, juries are highly fallible because they don't forget things that have been stricken from the records due to objections, bring in a slew of prejudices, and can sometimes have an issue with reasonable doubt. I can't wait for my mother, who is an attorney, to listen to it.

I hope that they do a second season, which they are currently crowdsourcing for the funding, but I wonder if they'll tackle another case or do something else.

Required fields are marked *

Another Serial listener here! I think for the second season, at least based on the interviews so far, they want to do something else, not a (murder) case. I can imagine that the heaviness ultimately affects the reporter, so I would understand if they wanted to do a different type of a story. Perhaps something heartwarming?:)
The case is so messed up, though. Nothing really makes sense. After the last podcast episode, I am more inclined to think that AS was not directly involved, but we may never find out.

0

It really doesn't make sense and it's probably hurt by the fact that they started collecting evidence long after a person could reasonably be expected to remember anything. I mean I have a pretty good memory, as in I can remember some minute details about very mundane thing from 25 years ago, but I doubt that I could tell you in detail what happened on October 10th of this year.

I don't buy that AS coldly plotted out Hae's murder because there's no reason that I've "seen" for him to do that and I tend to agree with the Innocence Project lawyer that the chance that he was a sociopath was very small. I honestly tend to believe that it was either someone completely else or if it's someone from our "dramatis personae" I tend to think that Jay was the most likely, especially after discovering that he had a habit of lying.

Just started a few days ago. Fascinating stuff.

If you like Serial, you'll probably also like This American Life -- the first episode aired there --- also the Innocence Project has taken up the case according to a CBS news report this week.

Also, the Moth Podcast has some really amazing true stories.

I have it downloaded but unsure I'll listen since I don't much care to hear yet more about violent crimes against women and 9+ hours... I don't know.

I've listened to a couple of TAL episodes and enjoyed them but sadly I don't think I can add it to the already bourgeoning list of podcasts that I already subscribe to. No time for everything!

I don't find it necessarily focused on the issue of violent crime against women. It's actually, broadly speaking, a look at the way we interact with fellow humans and why. That's what I'm getting from it so far. I don't anticipate it having a clean conclusion in terms of answering the "who dunnit" question.

It hadn't thought about it before but Serial is a kind of real-life Rashomon. I suppose, in a limited sense, that's what all trials are.

Some weeks I am completely uninterested in the themes TAL is dealing with (particularly if it has to do with teenagers behaving badly) but they had a podcast earlier this year about an Hasidic Community moving to a small town outside NYC and taking over the school board that was probably the most riveting thing I've listened to this year (I listen to a good many because I have a dog that likes exercise so they are my entertainment when I'm out with her). It was called A Not-So-Simple Majority.

Keep reading about serial on the Lainey gossip site. But didn't realise it was based on real life stories. How harrowing is it?

0

Required fields are marked *

It's actually one story spread out over 12 episodes. A lot of it is focused on solving a mystery, hearing all the different accounts and trying to figure out who is telling the truth. It gets harrowing when the presenter alerts you to the fact that these are real lives that have been impacted and when she occasionally delves into the victim and alleged perpetrator's lives.

Regardless, it's a rich look into broad human issues like judging character, memory, regret, self-reflection, coping with loss and very briefly the American criminal justice system.

So I've been watching The Master's Sun all week and I am just absolutely in love with it. I don't think that I have ever disliked a male lead so intensely as Joong-Won and by now (at episode 10) I am head over heels for him. Plus Gong Hyo Jin is just fantastic. She's able to play those small moments so beautifully and it's so distinct from her role in It's Okay, That's Love, which was the first drama that I'd ever seen her in.

I'm also watching Pinocchio, which is entertaining me. I love Park Shin Hye as a spunky, mouthy heroine.

Also, watching the mini dramas Love Cells and Doll House, although I am not that crazy about Doll House, which sometimes looks like somebody is shooting it with their cellphone. Love Cells is just like cotton candy, lots of sweet and just a bit of substance.

I loved Master's Sun!! It cimeteky sucked me in when I watched it. It was one of the first dramas I completed and it holds a special place in my heart. And I agree...I really didn't like him in the beginning and wanted her to stay far away from him, but he won me over by the end.

I know that some people didn't like the weekly ghost problems, but some of them are just so good. Plus I like a second female lead who isn't THAT awful and is more upset that the second male lead likes Tae Gong Shil than about Joong-Won liking her.

I'd seen pictures of So Ji-sub before and thought "eh, he's ok looking," but this drama has majorly sold me on him. The man can wear a suit.

So Ji-Sub is definitely someone I think you have to see in action. Not only does he wear a suit well but he has a certain screen presence that I think is very appealing/charismatic.

You're upset that the second lead likes her? Lol. I always have issues with second leads for one reason or another (normally because I get SLS although not in this show). I really love SIG but I think this was his least interesting role that I've seen.

This change in how I see him is reminding me that I should get back to watching What Happened in Bali, which I started because it Jo In-Sung in it, who is, in my humble opinion, just too attractive to be real. I only watched one episode and then started to the first episode of The Master's Sun, which has just turned into a major binge session.

I should watch another drama with SIG after I finish this. I tend to choose my next dramas that way, watching a new one that shares an actor/actress in the one I just finished.

0

I've been led to a lot of dramas by doing that. Recently I'm just caught up in the new dramas but almost all the previously aired dramas that I watch are because I've been following an actor. (I wish I could say I've followed an actress but for some reason I find it harder to really love Korean actresses...I think they're good but I think I often have issues with the roles and it blocks me from really loving them. Weird.)

Master's Sun is definitely worth watching. It's a bit of a strange Hong Sisters drama because of the episodic structure (hence the very different pace compared to their usual dramas), and it unfortunately suffers from some plotting mistakes.
(I personally think that Gong Hyo-jin was "wasted" on that role because that character is not that difficult to play.)

Pinocchio: Very good role for Park (and Lee, but he got his share already), I just see some risks with the current pace ...

Required fields are marked *

The only other Hong Sister drama that I've watched is My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, so I'm not as used to their style, which probably works in my favor when it comes to the structure. I can definitely see what you say about Gong Hyo-jin not having a lot to work with (especially after seeing her in It's Okay, That's Love, where I think she had a role that didn't waste her, although YMMV), but I do like how she fills out the character so well and makes her impossible to not love to bits.

As for Pinocchio, I hear you on the pace. The episode count seems like it should be further along than it is. She certainly needs it after Heirs....

Oh, Master's Sun. Oddly enough, despite its weaknesses, I srted to like it more a few months after it ended, and I sometimes watch episodes/scenes when I'm feeling down. Still love the OST, especially Hyorin's song and Touch Love. Sidenote: Is it odd that I'm not remotely interested in romantic relationships in real life (turning 27 soon, so am pretty certain about this), but rewatch kdramas like Master's Sun, MNIKSS, or DJS, and stress out about the OTP?:))

I am watching way too many dramas!

Pride and Prejudice – Prosecutor meets girl from his past who blames him for her brother’s death. I enjoy parts of this drama. The cases they work on don’t grab me enough to care. I just care about their relationship. However, her constant pouty face and inflexibility are getting on my nerves. Thank God the men are preetee…

Cantabile Tomorrow – Never saw the original. Maybe that is why I’m enjoying it and appreciating the way that the characters are developing. However, I still don’t see the leads together in my mind.

Pinocchio – I see the similarities with IHYV. Orphan lead/traumatic past with special gift (reading minds vs. brilliant mind); spunky, straight talking lead lady who can’t hide her feelings from male lead (because he either reads her mind or her hiccups); and the couples feel their relationships cannot happen (age difference vs. twisted family relationship). However, I still see enough originality in the story to grab me and suck me in. Plus both relationships share a lot of chemistry in both dramas.

Misaeng – L.O.V.E. the drama. Would hate to ever work in a Korean company if that is really the reality of it.
Birth of a Beauty – Extreme makeover, revenge plot, funny situations, quirky characters. I’m in.

Modern Farmer – Hated it in the beginning. Now I’m loving how the characters are developing.

What Happens to My Family? – Loving father goes crazy and decides to teach his kids about kindness, loyalty, and appreciation of the things that really matter in life. Loving it!

Then in the Japanese front I’m watching:

Yuube no Curry, Ashita no Pan – Young widow still lives with father-in-law 7 years after husband’s death. He is also a widower. His sister-in-law (wife’s sister) is an older woman, looking for love. A neighbor that can’t smile. An opportunity for a new love for the young widow, who finds it hard to let go of her late husband. And everyone deals with their loneliness in different ways. I myself was a widow at age 33, so I can relate too much. I can’t stop watching it.

Kyo wa Kaisha Yasumimasu – A thirty year old woman who has never dated starts dating a hunky 21 year old college student that works part-time at her office. Hunky CEO from another firm grows interested in her. Love tringle ensues. Nothing I haven’t seen before, except with this one I still can’t tell who she’ll end up with. Curiosity keeps me watching.

To be fair, even in the Japanese version, they didn't exactly have a "mature romantic relationship" but the romance was very very low key - the highlights were really their journey to self-discovery as musicians and on friendships and relationships (teacher/student, father/son) than on romance. So...yeah...they do kind of loosely end up together...(which I am sure is no big surprise)...but that's not the focus of Nodame. I'm not caught up to the most recent episodes of CT, although I do like Joowon's interpretation of Chiaki. Am looking forward to it, and I think it's OK even if the leads don't end up end up together, as long as the story arc is satisfying enough!

Oh I'd be fine with them not being a couple. It just feels very much like that's where this is heading. I don't think it's the focus and I am enjoying the show for a variety of other reasons. I just wish they'd sort if cut that romance line because I'm not buying it.

Oh, I'd go for that sweet-faced cellist over the emotionally-screwed up Yoo Jin any day (though Il-Rak would clearly be the best choice - he of the passionate attachments and cool wardrobe. :)

0

While I personally think the second lead would be my choice as well....but not for her. I think he fell very hard for her for really very little reason. It doesn't work for me. But I have all the feels for him.

0

They had a vey intense moment though... But I don't think it's important in this drama.

For me it feels a lot like a real love. When you are young you think that physical attraction is the most important part in the love relationship. In the reality, at the end, love is not about kissing each other but taking care of eachother at the most hardest moments. You see that somebody loves you when he stays with you no matter what.

They are both ruined emotionally, they both know it, they know they would have to face it, they face it, they fight, they are stying together and are fighting with their own problems for the shared future. For me this is love. It speaks more than some kissing scenes.

Required fields are marked *

I'm watching Kyo wa Kaisha Yasumimasu too, which I find pretty interesting if only because she's totally striking sparks w the second lead (who is of course super hot and has been since Nodame) but at the same time I see her growing (?) and learning a lot about being IN a relationship with the first lead. I wish he had more depth though because he is seriously a cipher to me. I can't tell whether he's being sincere with his feelings and whether he really understands what it means to be with her. If you haven't seen it, Gomen ne seishun is another quirky drama this season that strikes all the right emotional tones for me although they are exploring issues that are rather tricky.

Also watching Kyo wa Kaisha Yasumimasu. Very difficult to predict who she will end up with and moreso I am genuinely confused about who I would choose for her. If I had to choose for myself, it would be Yu all the way but I don't necessarily think that is the right choice for Hanae. I guess that is the strength of this show and acting. The characters are so fully formed, you can't really project yourself and choices on them.

Modern Farmer- It's zany fun mixed with surprising depth, what's not to love? I still don't want anyone to actually end up together though.

Liar Game- What an intense week, does it have to end?

Misaeng- I love it seriously and if asked why, as I was, I've discovered I can't give a real reason as I don't know why.

I just realized I don't have anything interesting to say about dramas this week.

Depending on how they end Liar Game, Misaeng, and Pinocchio could end in a four way tie with Miss Korea as by far my favorite dramas of the year. Maybe it's just me but I feel like this year was an off year after last year which I felt was above average as I loved everything I watched. I guess in the end it all comes down to opinion.

How cool that you saw the rooftop from Misaeng. A few weeks ago redfox asked for cliche scenes that drive us crazy and I said rooftop meetings . but in Misaeng they really do work I think because it is a place for honest speak in a work environment that is stifling. usually Kdrama rooftop scenes are annoying for break ups, blackmail reveals, threats, and lies/rumors, but in Misaeng the rooftop conversations are refreshing.

Happy Friday, everyone!

So hard to believe we only have about three weeks left here. Seems like, wherever I go, no matter how long I stay, it’s never long enough – but there’s something particularly special about this place, that I just really, really don’t want to leave. :( But on to happier thoughts…

Secret Door: Well, I said happier thoughts, but this drama just keeps making me sad, and not really in the way I want it to anymore. I’m pretty sure at this point I’m only in it for the ending, which in itself is sad, considering the ending I’m waiting for involves the main character dying…

Bad Guys: I absolutely cannot wait to find out how all of these guys are connected, and to see what happens to them by the end. And hopefully we’ll get a Jung Moon-centric episode soon. (I suppose it could be episode 7 – I haven’t watched that one yet.)

Pinocchio: Hands-down my favorite of what I’m currently watching. I love this family so much. I’ve just come from episode 4, so I’m still reeling from it. Poor Dal Po – what a horrible way to find out. And his poor hyung too, still thinks he’s (now definitely) all alone in the world. I’m not sure yet what to think about Beom Jo, except that I find him part creepy and part almost-endearingly weird. We’ll see which side wins out in the end.

Flower Boys on Campus Update:
This week was the 40-year anniversary of the relationship between my school and the one I’m studying at here in Japan, so a group of delegates came to visit for a special celebration ceremony. Roommate and I met our school’s president (whom we’ve seen countless times back on campus, but had never officially met. He’s super friendly and laid-back, and greeted us with a fist bump and a hug), and also introduced ourselves in Japanese during the ceremony. Possibly the most nerve-wracking speech I’ve ever given, and I didn’t say more than three sentences. My interpreter from our Japanese Culture class also gave a speech (since he’s studied at my school in the past), and I’ll just take a minute to be shallow and remark that he looks really good in a suit.

Moving on… Hm. Well, maybe there isn’t much else to move on to. The amount of Flower Boy contact was a little low this week, I guess. I got to talk to Classmate M (a really short, quiet guy) a little more than usual. I am continuously amazed -- almost bewildered -- by how adorable he is, but I will of course never tell him this.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Just had one of THOSE days at work today where you wish you could roll out of bed and redo the whole damn day...and I had to watch Pinocchio to cheer myself up. The story is full of plot holes and feels a bit ham-fisted in its storytelling (nothing new for this writer) but I love it SO much for reasons I cannot explain! Somehow the characters are so compelling I feel myself cheering for Dal-po and feeling sad for him AND In ha; they are SO SO SO adorable together! K dramas - a band aid for everything. That would be my header, if I ever have a webpage.

On a side note I'm really enjoying Misaeng, and like many of y'all I'm totally feeling the emotional connection as an office worker to what the characters go through or what they feel. Hopefully the drama will be so successful, it will spur translations of the manhwa; I am otherwise going to have to try to read it raw which is going to be very very slow and highly tricky considering I might have to Google translate 95% of it LOL.

I have yet to finish Three Musketeers because I feel like if I don't watch the ending episodes...the drama wouldn't have ended...and I can still watch it. It's silly, but but but I'm so reluctant for it to end!

I've yet to start any other dramas and am considering Pride and Prejudice. Anyone knows if it's any good?

I realized this week that there is not enough rom-com in my drama viewing right now. I actually feel down if I'm watching too much intense stuff.

However, Liar Game...I really do like it. Hope it finishes strong. The villain in this is tied as the top villain of the year, in my opinion, with the over the top bad guy in Hotel King.

High School Love On..how many episodes is this going to be? It started out cute and fluffy like Love Cells but has been more of a downer lately. I have more to discuss about one aspect of this show (below).

Evaluating whether or not to watch Pinocchio. It seems like a good show.

Still loving Birth of a Beauty, but they could use a little more humor thrown in from time to time to dilute all the real nastiness.

I love a revenge drama with a good romance and a likely happy ending, so I'm watching The Legendary Witch as well.

On the TW Drama side, I have been watching Go Single Lady, I Do 2, and Apple in Your Eye. As far as the last episode of Go Single Lady....just wow...major whiplash from the relationship developments with the lead couple this week. Hope that the plot doesn't separate them for long, because I really love them together.

The aspect of High School Love On that I wanted to discuss further was the annoying second lead syndrome. It's really highlighted big time here, to the point of being ridiculous. Every other character affected by his behavior has given him tons of leeway. I really laughed when he basically told the male lead that he (the male lead) had everything and he (the second lead) had nothing. Really? Really? We're talking about one guy (the male lead) who was abandoned by his mother, has never known his father, and just lost his grandmother. And another guy (the second lead), who has a close relationship with his dad, a stepmother who is doing everything she can to establish a good relationship with him (until recently), and a mother that at least still seems to care about him. And this attitude is all basically because of a girl (our lead female AKA the angel who wants to be human), who has been kind to him but has never, never lead him on regarding his chances with her, and has always been open that the male lead is the only guy for her.

He's put those close to him through threats, bullying, manipulation, a half-heated suicide attempt on his part, and now he seems bent on destroying the female lead. And we're still supposed to view him sympathetically?

Agreed, it has been tough to watch him beat the 'woe is me' drum. At times, it is cringe inducing. But, these are the words the writer intended him to say...though I am not sure why this aspect is being dragged out to this degree.

re High School Love On: yes, SY's attitude is getting old very quickly, though WH and Seul Bi continue to be a cute couple. I was hoping to spend more time on the other students, or Sunbae Angel, or even a showdown between the Ethics Teacher and her husband...

Do the writers have more episodes than they know what to do with? I'm really tempted to offer them a deal: $150k and 3 stars in return for HSLO transferring 2 episodes to Liar Game!

Birth of Beauty: I agree, they started really well with their over-the-top comedy despite the rather nasty topic, but they lost this charm very fast.

Pinocchio might struggle with a similar issue down the road, it's impossible to keep up the current pace and "impact" level.

Anyone stuck in a drama rut can try MY Spring days. It ended a few weeks back, but good is good so watch it.

I want to check out Pinocchio, but sincerely LSJ nose is holding me back. I can't explain it but his nose scares me, anyone else has that problem.

Lol my issue was with his lips (whoa lip gloss much??) which I found oddly distracting, but fortunately LJS's acting helped me to get over it. Can't tell if it'll be the same for you, but perhaps you could give the first ep a try? The storytelling isn't subtle or nuanced but as long as you're going in with moderated expectations I think the story is enjoyable (or at least it is for me?). I love the characters.

I actually have a similar problem with Jo Yoon-hee's( from Kingn's Face) nose. I have tried to watch Nine due to everyone's fab reco but her nose somehow put me off enough not to watch the drama. King's Face has some interesting plot line brewing though I find childhood romance is cliche found in K drama land. But her nose still bothers me. This is my confession.

Lol oh LSJ seems to have more visual impact than I thought. I always think there's just something very plastic/fake about his face. I feel about it and a but shallow but I can't shake it. However, despite this I'm enjoying his performance so I say give it a try. I almost quite halfway through episide one but the time changes a lot so at least try two episides.

It's not just his nose for me its the combination of his face--Idky, and I don't mean I dislike him, I'm ambivalent, but his face confuses me. His features individually are near, almost too perfect, but all of his face together seems just a tiny bit off to me and I have no idea why. It drives me up a wall 'cause I haven't figured out what it is. Not hating--his acting is fine, but *shrug*.

Yeah, his nose reminds me of Michael Jackson- mid-stage, before his last nose job. Took too much off. But he's a good actor and did a good job in IHYV. That wig, though... And I'm a little iffy on PSH because I have seen her in other things and not liked her. But I'm giving the show a try, and I like most of the other characters.

Happy OT! Here's hoping the internet treats me better this week. The Potentially Good News is that my mother met a guy from the Internet Co outside our gate yesterday and I might have FINALLY MOVED UP on the wait list for FTTH. Pray for me, people! Faster internet access? Yes please! Kdramas, here I come!

Ok, what I'm watching:

MISAENG - I want to marry Mr Oh. Or Dong Shik. Or both, polyandry works for me at this point, LOL! I don't know if we are going towards romance but if they do, I trust them to do so in an understated and touching way.

Oh, and if Jon G. is reading, I reread the last OT thread and I want to agree with you that AM Ha isn't as douchy as the rest and that he is more threatened by Young Yi's talent "for a girl" than anything more purely mysoginistic.

I stumbled upon a documentary or making of on YT but sadly it is not subbed. I see that there are also official MVs with the OSTs being released. I just want to watch all I can on this series.

BAD GUYS - Haven't watch E07 yet, skimmed it raw but I still love it, blood and guts and all. I'm suspicious of Fisherman and Slick Prosecutor, though.

PINOCCHIO - Actually watched 3 of the 4 eps out so far and love it. Never thought I would like PSH in anything but she's rather good. LJS is just wonderful, ugly wig and all. The hairdresser scene in E03 killed me!

MR BACK - Haven't watch what is out this week but plan to over the week-end.

HIGH SCHOOL LOVE ON - Ok, I admit to watching this. KSR is such a good actress for someone so young. And is it me or does B Lead, YS? have a lisp. And I'm finding the ex-bully short guy (who was Busan Boy in SUFBB) so very cute, I can't stand it!

THE GREATEST MARRIAGE - The show that tells me just how masochistic I can be. Is this sort of a meta thing where PSY is expiating her past sins (sleeping pills, was it?) because that heroine is SU.FFE.RING. And don't tell me they are going to redeem TY via AMNESIA?!?!?!?!

WGM - SOLIM - Have you guys seen the photo spread? SJR is sooo hot...with EPIC BAD HAIR, IMO, LOL! A bit disappointed in KSO. It's in keeping with their personas from the show but still. She looks a little stiff to me.

I also have a request for recs. I watched Middle School Girl A with the kid sister from HSK (pre-nose job, OMG!) and I was wondering if Beanies could recommend Dramas or short series (4 episodes max) with a Happy/Hopefull Ending. I'm a bit stressed out lately and I can't handle sad endings. Thank you in advance!

Appreciated. (Of course I read this. It's friday afternoon and I either read this or the angry mails my boss is continuously writing since lunchtime ...)

A propos misogyny: I cried during a certain scene in the 3rd episode of Pinocchio: When Dal-po sees In-ha in tears after the job interview and texts her, he:

* does not call her to pressure her into telling him the truth
* allows her to lie to him about her current state
* asks whether he should pick her up (and console her)
* accepts her "no" and drives away

Wait a second, a male lead in love with the female lead asks for consent? And accepts a "no"? I'm in love with the writer ...

Totally agree, again! (Is it going to rain? LOL) I loved that scene. I like that both brothers don't seem to have become evil even if they have issues/trauma from the events. The brother seems kind (the fender bender thing) yet driven to find his father and clear his family's name.

(I fear that I may have to quote Inigo Montoya at some point in the future, though).

Web dramas may be an idea. They may have several episodes, but each one is so short you can "marathon" them in an afternoon or less.

Her Lovely Heels is a 12 part web drama but each episode only runs 20 minutes are so. Very cute with a happy ending.

After School - Luck or Not is kind of crazy (common in web dramas) but stars Seo Kang Joon (and the rest of 5urprise) and Kim So Eun. Again, several short episodes. Very cute and has a happy/touching ending.

Something a little darker, but gives that light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel feel amidst the crazy is Another Parting. Seo In Gook is an alien in search of "why people cry".

Hope this helps

About Mr Back, I've been catching up on that drama on gooddrama.net and guess what the first 2 episodes there were a lot of shallow commenters commenting about Shin Ha Kyun's looks, saying he's very ugly and old and not fit for Jang Nara, how did he manage to become an actor with that face etc etc, I just wrote the comment saying you guys just wait now you're saying this but by the next three or four episodes you will end up fangirling over him, and just like I guessed after 2 more episodes the same commenters are all praising his handsome looks, acting and charisma, some are even calling themselves foolish for not recognising his charms, this is a perfect case of a good actor doesn't need a conventional handsome face, they let their acting do the talking, anyway the drama in my opinion is very funny especially the interactions between Lee Joon and Shin Ha Kyun.

Happy OT guys, i hope your week was great mine was full of reading and exams. There are so many good dramas airing now, i have about 15 on my watch list for thanksgiving and Christmas. This week i watched The Princess man, mainly because i needed to watch a kdrama i had watched before and doesn't take too much of my attention when doing my assignments and I love it. So, i know all about the Park Shi hoo scandal and felt i would be awkward watching it but it felt perfectly normal for me, so i know people who won't want watch to watch any of his project so i'm wondering if i am kind of strange in the head because i enjoyed his acting and his potrayal of Seung Yu. Lots of spazzing ahead.

Se ryung: i love love her especially her growth as a character from ep 1- ep 24, i remember thinking that she was badass standing up to her father like that and when she cut her hair and also put a sword to her neck. She did not even suffer from noble idiocy. When Seung Yu kidnapped her she even hugged him and when Myun tried to drag her around the way she pulled her hand from him was all sort of awesome. She stuck to her guy and her beliefs to the very end. Moon chae won ocks in this role

Suyang; the first time i watched the drama i hated him before but this time i noticed that he really loved his family especially se ryung. I think he was mostly moved by greed for the throne rather than pride.
I also loved the princess and her husband i bawled when he died but i was proud that his wife was strong for him at that time. He just had to die when his wife already loved him. The maids of both se ryung and the princess were smart and kept secrets well. And the tavern people also rocked and were helpful. I still hate Myun. Seung yu sister-in-law and niece were also nice, the little girl was especially cute.

I hope you guys have a great and fun weekend. Thanksgiving is almost here and i am so happy

I LOVED TPM, and feel a bit sad that the drama has been affected by Park Shi Hoo's scandal after it broke, which while understandable undermines the value of the drama. It was probably my favorite (sorta fusion? Modernish?) saeguk dramas of all time and I felt Moon Chae Won really stood out here. Not to mention the second leads were also seriously awesome (yes the princess!! Yes her consort too!!).

Still only watching (and loving to bits) Misaeng... There's nothing about it I don't like. Unfortunately zero interest in any of the other shows.

The London Korean Film Festival finished. I've got pictures/reviews up for Kundo (Kang Dong Won at Q&A), Hwayi (review, Q&A with producer), The Killer Behind the Old Man (Jung Woo-sung at Q&A) and Revivre (Ahn Sung-ki at Q&A). Review for A Road Called Life to come soon, and for Night Flight hopefully in a not-too-distant future (that was my favourite film of the whole festival).

Also had the opportunity to attend a group interview with Ahn Sung-ki (see Revivre link above). I haven't really done any interviews before but I felt like I would seriously regret if I didn't take the chance to meet someone who played in some of Korea's most important films.

Watched the Korean film No Breathing, which can be summed up as "paint-by-numbers movie". Predictable story (every twist was so predictable), pretty flat characters, and mostly uninspired acting. Seo In-guk was the only one who managed to breathe real life into his character (hope he'll do more interesting projects in the future because everything else he has done doesn't really appeal to me), Lee Jong-seok on the other hand was kind of underwhelming. I've loved him in other things (School 2013, IHYV) but he sort did... nothing... in this movie? I wanted a much colder, distant aura for this character.

Those of you who asked about my review of the Ghibli Documentary (Kingdom of Dreams and Madness), I did finish it, it'll be posted on easternKicks.com on Nov 26 (and shortly after on my own blog).

Rurouni Kenshin (part 2) opens in UK cinemas next Friday. Planning to go see it with a friend, but I have find time to watch part 1 first, which I still haven't seen!

And now for an abbreviated Kdrama Fashion Rants and Raves! segment.

RANTS : Ok, so I still want to lead a black ops mission and raid the Costume depts of kdramaland for double-breasted suits. There's one in at least every episode of kdrama, esp in a corporate setting. I just can't! And they put them on every physique. IMO, strong shoulders like So Ji Sub or the model-actor from Plus Nine Boys can't wear it well.

RAVES: I want to marry the entire cast and crew of MISAENG but the Costume Director will be my First Wife/Husband because I like the understated-bordering-on-bland yet elegant outfits, esp on Young Yi. It's all black, grey, blue and white, with dashes of deep green and red. So well done! And realistic-to-me hemlines on BOTH men and women, who knew that was possible in a kdrama!?!?!? Love the flair of Seok Yeol's outfits, too.

I remember way back in the first episode when we first see her in that jaw-dropping pencil skirt and makeup and rolling my eyes, because of course this would be perfectly OK in dramaland. Imagine my surprise when this was completely subverted ten minutes later in her badass sales presentation!

I really like the interesting prints they use for Seok-yeol's shirts and his ties. So pretty! I can always tell it's him in the background, even aside from his hair and hilarious expressions.

Happy Friday, y'all!

Watched This Week:

"Naeil Cantabile": I'm finally happy with all the characters, and looking forward to the story. I just wish Il-Rak had more screen time.

Misaeng: My husband, who likes to make fun of me for my obsession with K-dramas, is completely hooked on this show. HA! I found the Manager Park storyline a bit stressful, as I used to work with somebody like that (who whined constantly about how much work they were doing when, in fact, they did nothing.

Hero: This is a Lee Joon Ki series from a while back where he plays a newspaper reporter. Memorable for the scene of him pretending to fart on his niece. (I swear, I'm not making it up.)

History of the Salaryman: I started this one last night; so far, I'm loving it. Great cast, great soundtrack, and a chicken. No, really.

Bad Guys: Why was there only one episode last week?!? This show really makes me want to know what's happening next.

Mourning Grave: I thought it was a lot of fun, though the bullying was actually scarier for me than the ghostie. I think it would have been a better series than a film, because there was a LOT of backstory that would have been better served over several weeks.

Wishing I was Watching:

Second Born: Storing consciousness on a microchip? Ooooo.

Healer: Sounds like a episodic eye-candy, in a 'Mission Impossible' kind of way.

K-Drama Moment:

Every single Kdrama DVD set I bought for the library gets checked out as soon as it's returned. So far, "Two Weeks" gets the most love, but "The King: 2 Hearts" is a favorite with our romance lovers. I'm waiting on "Marriage, not Dating" to arrive.

Also, this morning I was driving the kids to school, and from the backseat I hear my 9 year old daughter singing a No Brain song (and not doing too badly pronunciation-wise, either!)

But the lead is hi-larious, and yet doesn't come across as stupid or obnoxious. It'll be a perfect counterpoint to Misaeng, which is more serious.

Hi Beanies,
I have missed posting, but end up reading everything on Saturday. I just love the OT.

The good news is I have been given a three week, all expenses paid trip to Germany by our local German consulate (long story why, but I'm thrilled nonetheless). My DH says, "That's the least they can do for all the effort you put in learning their language." LOL. Anyway, it's a language and cultural program where they bring together people from all over the world. The bad news is, I have to go in December (brrr), so that's RIGHT NOW. I leave right after Thanksgiving.

Dramas:
Watching:
Miseang: Possible my favorite drama ever. It's just so real and yet mixes in some supernatural. I also like that there is no particular love story--yet at least. I saw some romatic gestures in the previews, but an article I read said there will be no romance. Siwan is just so adorbs. I would love for him to get the girl.

Tomorrow's Cantabile: It's keeping my interest, but I'm watching it mostly for Nae-il because she is so whacky. I don't "get" the crazyness over Jon Woo. For me he's just meh. Kind of flat. As I mentioned, I have second lead syndrome something terrible. I think part of it is his storyline. I can really relate. I studied piano, but my hands couldn't take it, so I stopped to rest them and never went back. Still play for fun--it's kind of my secret ability. People say, "Oh, you play the piano?" and then I sit down and go all Nae-il on them and play The Flatulance Song. Ha Ha.

Pinocchio: Liking this so much more than I thought I would. After Dr. Stranger I was scared off LJS, thinking his team wasn't good at picking shows for him. He has great chemistry with PSH and she is cute in the role. I love how the show is poking fun at actors and models.

I felt so bad when Dal-Po learned of his father's death. I was wondering if the test was actually to see how much compassion and composure the reporter-wannabes would have in such a situation. Great directing, wonderful acting in that scene.

That's it. That's all I'm watching--and Bones, of course. Trying to read more (The Goldfinch) and study my German.

Okay, lange Geschichte...

"Also müssen Sie sofort hin." Und dann haben sie mir die Reise angeboten.

I'm trying to learn Korean too, but I'm also studying for the C2 exam in German, so Korean takes a back seat. So far I have learned Hangul and about 50 words. It's fun to recognize the words when I hear them in the dramas. I wish I could understand though, like I do German. Then I wouldn't have to wait for the subtitles and I could pay attention to the actors' faces.

Ohhhhhh.... that's fabulous. Wo in Deutschland?

I want a programme like that at all language centres... I'm sure Germany in December is great (my experience of Germany is pretty much limited to airports...), you'll get to enjoy Christmas markets! Fun fun.

Yeah, I wish I fluently understood Japanese and Korean already too, but my general impression is it'll take longer to learn how to speak/understand but then you'll have a real jump in knowledge where everything will just click. With the other languages I've learned (all Indo-European) I had other linguistic knowledge to fall back on, but Japanese/Korean is pretty much from scratch. No cheat-sheets.

Misaeng: To me, the first Korean drama that challenges both my heart and my brain at the same time.

Cantabile: Similar here. I feel nothing for the male lead (maybe because I'm a guy, not sure), even though I have a secret soft spot for music and studied piano once as a child (less than 2 years because of a family situation). There were some threads in the show that I liked, but as a whole, it's just too incoherent.

Pinocchio: "Dr Stranger", oh no, I try so hard every day to ignore the fact that I watched that. Not much to complain about Lee in Pinocchio, though I feel that he is better in the subtle scenes than in the big ones.

Misaeng: Yes, it's about office work, and if you have problems with bullying peers and corrupt bosses, or memories about a hard time as a trainee, or other office-related experiences, this might bring up some trauma. It might also be cathartic, but ...

Ronja: Veery hesitant here, Ronja Rövardotter was the first book I ever read in my life by my own choice (and that could be considered fiction literature, that is). Is it good?

Well, the three episodes of Ronja that I saw stuck close to the original and reminded me of scenes I hadn't thought about in years! (And that was watching the first episodes without any subtitles and understanding a few words here, and there, at most.) My impression was that they understood the source material and these essence of the characters very well – I need to get back to watching, I just haven't decided whether I should marathon it when it's finished or watch weekly or every other week (1/2 hour is just so little to take in at one time!).

I need to dig out my copy of Ronja next time I'm at home.

by far one of my favorites. Every character was flawed and fully fleshed out. The ending was a little contrived, but I was willing to accept it.

The slow decline of the old man into dementia was hard to watch having experienced that first had myself, but it was done well ... I can tell you, taking a loved one to a care home is both traumatic and heartbreaking.

This and Misaeng are two great shows that have stepped away from the usual Kdrama tropes and I think it's a wonderful thing.

I saw some comments about the Yu Na's Street subbing in last week's open thread, but didn't have the time to respond. So here's a quick update for those who are following it at DSS: all episodes up to 42 are more than 99% translated. Not fully edited, so one or two lines may still be a bit wonky, but pretty well translated. In the past week or two lots of new people have begun to chip in with the subbing, which is great, so things are going a bit faster these days. The lead editor hasn't been around lately, which is why none of the episodes past 36 have been marked 100% complete yet, but the subbing team has most definitely not dropped it.

Thinking about Korean TV.

I discovered 3 channels in Korean when visiting New York City.

"Minority TV" is a genre now. I grew up with just NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS. I still get little more than that in my rural area.

Do you watch Korean shows on TV in your country?

Is English a minority language in your country? If so, do they have a minority channel that plays English tv shows?

I'm in Northern California and our regular cable is mostly in English, although I can turn on the Spanish language subtitles. There are several Spanish language channels and one in Chinese. Otherwise I have to get premium cable and then I could have Korean, Japanese, German, French, BBC, etc.

Sometimes the commercials are in Spanish or Chinese, even though I am watching an English language channel.

I can watch sports in English or Spanish.

The radio is loaded with English and Spanish. Haven't heard any other languages, or even music from other countries.

I wouldn't really call Spanish a "minority language" here. It's just not the official language. As a matter of fact, I am used to hearing six or seven languages at a time when I sit in my local Peet's Coffee. Spanish, German, Russian, Hebrew, and Korean are the most frequent. Sometimes I ask what language the group is speaking and find out it is Ukranian or Farsi. Great place for a language lover.

I can walk around my town for a month and never hear anything except English. I know there are some Spanish speakers (I usually hear them at the doctor's office in the city of Pittsfield. MA). Plus of course I can hear Chinese spoken by the staff of Chinese restaurants.

I don't live in a place where language can be learned by just bumping into folks who speak multiple languages out loud in public.

If you are in the San Francisco area, there are many non-cable over-the-air free digital channels in multiple Asian languages. KBS is on 26.3 with English subs, and there's a couple of other Korean language channels with no subs. Also CCTV on 36.3 in English, ICTV on 26.4 in Chinese Mandarin with English subs, and several other Mandarin, Cantonese and Taiwanese channels with no subs. Then, there's multiple Vietnamese and Flipino channels and at least one Indian channel. There used to be one Japanese channel but it seems to have shut down. Of course, there are also multiple Spanish language channels and even some channels with European language content (French, German, Italian, etc.).

Here in the Midlands in the UK, it's almost completely English on my cable network. Other channels included are mostly Indian or Pakistani, 2 French channels (1 in English), Japanese NHK World (in English), Chinese news channel (in English), Al Jazeera and that's it. At least 95% of the channels are in English only. And, unfortunately, no Korean at all. I never hear Korean spoken at all unless I go to a Korean restaurant, and even then you'd be lucky.

0

Hi Anna: I was introduced to Korean dramas on NHK World (at least for the programming for US viewers). I think it was on weekdays (either Tuesday or Thursday). And they also had programming with global crime shows so I watched dramas from Italy, Norway, France, etc. Recheck the programming and see if you can find.

0

Hi Hillary. On your recommendation I checked the listings for NHK for the next 2 weeks. Unfortunately, it's all documentaries and news, not a drama in sight. I would be quite happy to see Korean or Japanese dramas, but, alas, to no avail. Must be just in Europe that they don't show dramas. Shame but thanks, anyway.

Hi everyone!!!

I'm only following Cantabile Tomorrow, since I couldn't finish the japanese version I'm really enjoying this drama, I love Joo Won, he is so handsome, I've never seen him so handsome *o*

Love cells doesn't count since the chapters are short xD

I want to watch more current shows like Pinocchio, Misaeng, Liar Game and now The Face King but I have a few dramas abandoned.

I'm saying goodbye to Heirs, Dr Stranger, Trot Lovers and She is so Lovable I don't think I can finish them. But I liked to continue watching Gost and Chuno I left them at episode ten.

And I want to watch The Princess's Man and Gaksital

So many dramas and no much time T__T

Oh I want to watch the special drama Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara did together, Old Farewell is the name but I couldn't find it, did you guys watched it, where I can find it?.

2 months since I gave up my one-sided crush on Chulmoon, and my motivation for learning Korean has really slumped.

I have been spending time lately just watching American TV. I am debating watching a Korean drama marathon.

Any romantic comedy recommendations that came after "You From Another Star"? That is when I stopped watching KDrama this year.

Julia,

I am not sure that I have heard this form of thank you yet. Or maybe I did but didn't realize it. I try to pay attention because it seems that there are so many ways I hear "Thank you" said - and not just whether it is formal or informal. Now, of course, I am obsessed with trying to find someone saying this! LOL :)

Older people say it. It is out of date, I guess, but I am 50 years old and learned Taekwondo from a man who was in Korea during the Korean War. So I learned it first, and I forget to use the other form of thank you. 감사합니다

Chulmoon is 57, he didn't mind but teased me a little about 고맙습니다 being used by his generation and older.

The cool kids use ㄱ ㅅ ㄱ ㅅ in text messages. I used that once with my tutor, and he laughed so hard. I am too old to pretend to be cool.

Thanks Julia!

Hi Julia, no, it's not out of date, you hear it all the time, in dramas and on the streets of Korea. The reason why there are 2 forms of 'thank you' is because one is Sino-Korean and the other is pure Korean.

I think if you're looking for rom-com, it's definitely a must to see WGM SoLim couple.. I've been a kdrama watcher for 5 years already but I've never been this entertained. Song Jae Lim's cheesy pick up lines are a hoot!! My current drama playlist has been reduced to Misaeng, What's with this family and Pride & Prejudice because I kept re- watching SoLim episodes to lighten up my mood..

Hey everyone...happy OT!!

It's been a chilly week...and to think, we're gonna have 70s this weekend! Unreal. Also unreal is that lake effect snow in NY! Yikes. And I complained last winter when it snowed 2ft one day, then another ft the next day -.- To beanies in that area, I hope yall are all right and safe.

I have a random question: do any beanies here do the Korean skincare regimen (which I've heard is like 13 different steps). I personally am I interested, but the many steps and the various skin care items ($$) are making me wary. Honestly, up until last year, my skin was like the skin I had since high school--so all I did was face wash with Deep Clean, astringent and face cream from the grocery (my limit was $12). But now that I've hit 30, my skin has started to dry more than usual and my regimen is now no good. I invested and bought a well known brand ($45 for face cream) and also started using skin brightening toner on top of the usual astringent (got combo skin). Now I've also added Vitamin C serum as well...counting that, I have 5 steps. I just wanted to know thoughts about the Korean skin regimen from my fellow beanies -- I'd appreciate any feedback! :)

I'll post my drama thoughts later on, just thought I'd post this first...

I am Asian but have been living in Southern Europe where the sunshine is harsh. I find that Western beauty products tend to put extra oil so it has not worked with my skin. On the other hand Korean and Japanese products do not contain much oil and tend to be light on my skin. Since I live in Southern Europe, I desperately needed a good sun block but the European products were not my cup of tea. When I went to Japan, I bought Japanese sunblocks and I find the products very smooth to apply and effective( often with less oil). This experience made me retry Asian beauty products.
Recently I started using some fermented essence( the first fermented product is SKII which is very expensive and Japanese). It's like lotion or toner and I think this really changed my skin. My skin started glowing! I have tried those fermented essence from Missha, Iope, TonyMoly and Secret Key and luckily all of them work for my skin.( Secret Key Starting Treatment Essence is the cheapest).
I do not do so many steps like Korean girls do. The reason is that unlike Korean version, some Japanese articles tell me that we must not spoil our skin too much with many products . So I use toner, essence, eye cream, lotion, cream and occasional sleep pack( I am much older than you). I do know that Japanese tend to use relatively cheap sheet mask on regular base and they have certain way to do face/neck massage.
I am keen on finding a good facial wash and I keep two or three products( I usually use honey in the morning but use different products to take off make ups in the evening) and use them depends on my skin condition. However, the most effective yet economical product to wash my face is raw honey so far. Basically you wet your face and put small amount of raw honey and wash your face,,, it really calm my face and when I feel my skin is a bit dry side, I massage with honey( it glide well) and leave it for a while.

Personally I do not believe in astringent with harsh alcohol content because it really dries my skin.I have heard good opinion on snail products( such as Benton, Secret Key etc) Have you tried one?

I started using honey as a face wash this year too! It's amazingly good. I mix mine with a bit of olive oil, massage it in and then wipe off with a warm washcloth. And I do a honey mask at least once a week. It's great stuff.

Hey Because of Reasons!

Sorry for the delay in replying...I do hope you'll see this, though!

Both you and atz wrote about using raw honey, which has convinced me to go buy some and actually try your tips! I think it's because I don't really eat honey (I haven't even tried eating raw honey at all)...I do remember reading about this in magazines but never really thought about doing it. I'll give this a try sometime soon, especially when the cold winters in my area actually settle in :)

Hey atz!

Sorry for the delay in replying...I do hope you'll see this, though! Thank you so much for your detailed reply! :)

I, too, have had that aversion to products in the U.S. -- a lot of the time, they end up making my face oily or compel my skin to become more oily. I have combo skin, with an oily T-zone already - so of course, the products I've tried were no gos. And actually, I find myself calling it astringent but it's actually witch hazel oil controlling toner -- I think I'm still used to calling it that way from my teens, when I really used astringent to battle acne skin (which, thankfully, I've controlled since then - only the occasional small pimple during hormonal changes). I also don't use much makeup anymore - I dropped foundation after several brands caused me to break out. I found that being barefaced (with the exception of lip, eyeliner and sometimes mascara) has allowed me to really see my skin and of course, using better products have allowed me to see healthier skin.

Thank you for the tip about raw honey...which I've read about but never really considered actually doing (especially since I've never consumed raw honey before either, lol). The only face mask I've attempted to use was putting raw avocado & a teeny bit of olive oil on my dry areas during the winter. But I think you have convinced me to try raw honey :)

I have yet to even venture out and sample any of the brands you've mentioned...maybe it's because I was stuck in the mentality that I should get my products from the grocery/drugstore rather than from a cosmetic line or at the mall, lol.

I am actually curious about products with snail, after reading about it in a fashion magazine recently (where they also discussed a lot of Korean/Japanese facial care products - hence, my interest).

There's a beauty/lifestyle site I read (refinery29.com) that occasionally has interesting posts about Korean beauty routines and products, and I always think that it's just too much work for me. Plus I don't like putting too many chemically formulated things on my skin. But I have seen people rave about Korean beauty products from places like Etude House, Innisfree, The Saem and Laneige. I tried a Vitamin C serum earlier this year (not from one of those brands, though), and I saw a difference almost instantly. I was impressed. And I feel slightly tempted to try the famous snail creams, just becuase it sounds so weird.

Cleansing routine now includes cleansing oil, a gentle wash, and then serum and moisturizer. My skin is definitely cleaner.

I also use Innisfree moisturizer for day. It's very nice.

For US folks, you can purchase these through Amazon.

Wouldn't have thought watching Kdramas would have influenced my beauty behaviors/purchases but it has. Who knew?

Hey Lulu88!

Sorry for the delay in replying…I do hope you’ll see this, though!

I have yet to try out a cleansing oil, in fear that my oily T-zone would get oiler...even though I've read how it does wonders in softening skin. Maybe it's just my mindset about needing soapiness to clean skin, rather than an oil. Seeing how you say your skin is cleaner that way...maybe I should venture out of my usual cream cleanser and try an cleansing oil!

I've bought skin products on Amaz and haven't had the good luck in having it work out for me, yet. Even the usual brands I get from the grocery/drugstore all make me itch or break out in some way...which led me to think maybe I was getting old products? (I purchased directly from them, not a third-party). I've been wary since, because that happened four separate times. I've stuck with Sephora since.

But you're right, watching kdramas does present some influence into a beauty routine! :)

Hey Because of Reasons!

Oops, didn't realize you commented here too! (should have checked, sorry)

What got me interested in the Korean beauty routine was just by chance - I was waiting for my mom's haircut and they had a stack of fashion/beauty mags. I was flipping through one and saw names that were familiar to me, thanks to kdramas - the ones you mentioned. It was like those recommending segments, and it was about how more and more non-Asians were turning to these Korean products! I personally haven't tried any because I'm barely getting by with the job I have, along with paying off student loans...so yeah, not quite there yet. But I, too, have heard raves about these brands and products...so I'm seriously thinking of setting aside some money and investing in purchasing one or two, just to try it out.

I'm like you, I don't like using tons of chemically formulated things for my skin...been more drawn to the natural formulated types (which, considering I used stuff from the grocery/drug stores, aren't as "natural" as I'd liked). I'm currently using Origins, which I guess isn't as natural as I'd like but more natural than the stuff I'm used to using, lol.

I never really thought to use a Vitamin C serum until I spotted a sale for a set from Sephora, which I wanted to try because it was made with camu. Got it more than half off, thanks to the sale price and discount....and I am impressed with the changes I've seen in my skin. I never really thought I had that much dark spots and dullness until I started using Vitamin C - shoot, I probably use more on my skin than I actually ingest via food (haha). And the products with snail? Has me intrigued, as do the products with starfish or some other ingredient from the sea. It's to be determined if I actually follow through and buy one to use, though :)

So on to the dramas...

Bad Guys: So we finally get some answers to our burning questions...Jung-moon is a murderer and Tae-soo's friend Hyun-woo & old shopkeeper were actually trying to save his life. I've been waiting for the "confirmation" that Jung-moon was a killer...although I guess we'll have to see if it really is him on that supposed tape. Not defending a potential serial killer a la Tae-oh in Gapdong, but it's still to be determined whether he really is a cold blooded killer with amnesia, he's faking his amnesia or someone set him up. There's way too many people who want him dead, that's for sure. Now I'm questioning whether the Big Bad here isn't Goo-tak...I do have an inkling, still, that Jung-moon may be responsible for his daughter's death but I'm thinking Commissioner is a bit sketchy now. Of course, it could be another character yet to be determined...but there's only 4 eps left.

Pinocchio: I expected a bit more from someone who wrote I Hear Your Voice. I hated the fact that the writer forced some parts -- like the all too convenient trio confessing at the table next to Dal-po's hyung being the worst offense, along with Dal-po finding out about the discovery of dad's bones during the interview. Is it too much to ask to have a story unfold more naturally than inserting way too convenient plot points like that?! Beom-joo seems like a creeper (why is a chaebol trying to be a reporter anyway?), In-ha's mom is a cold-stone biatch, and I find myself rooting for Grandpa, who was super sweet in his bus scene with Dal-po (he's one of my fave grampa actors).

And I think people may have already posted about it by now, but RIP Kim Ja-ok. One of my fave actresses, gone too soon :*( When I first heard the news, I couldn't believe it...then I remembered her interview on Win Win years ago that she had been in the hospital for some time (to explain her absence from dramaland). She will be surely missed.

Still behind on (yet again): 1 Night 2 Days, What's With My Family, Liar Game, Misaeng.
Trying to check out: King's Face.
Looking forward to: Healer. Dr. Frost.

Have a great weekend, yall -- and Happy Thanksgiving! :)

I'm Asian and I use a combination of Korean and Japanese products (SKII, laneige), but employ the Japanese philosophy of having just enough products for my skin, so no 13 step regime for me. Last I counted, only 6 steps so far.

I also keep in mind that the Korean regime is to counteract the effects of their dry climate and harsh winters, but I'm from a tropical region with high temperatures and humidity levels, so too much products will weigh down my skin. That said, I like the Korean idea of layering the moisturising for the skin, but the Japanese belief of having just enough comes first.

And on what other beanies have tried or are thinking of trying:

SKII - no glowing effect, but it stabilises my skin, so it's staying on in my regime for quite a while.
Vitamin C serum - never heard of it until I read this post now, I'll try when I have the chance.
Snail cream - I got it a few years ago, used it one year later, and noticed no effect, so no more trying. But I did purchase some snail cream masks, which I found highly moisturising. But that's what masks are supposed to do.
raw honey as a face cleaner - I like that it's organic with no chemical components, but in tropical areas, honey is not easy to get and even harder to store....

Movies:Watched Snowpiercer last Saturday with an acquaintance. I was inwardly squeeing so much that I could understand a good chunk of Song Kang-ho’s dialogue without the help of the subs. I geeked out with the translator thing and wish it already existed. Overall I enjoyed it very much and now desperately want to read the original French comic it was based on. Also so many questions that sadly a 2 hr film can't explore. SPOILERS: THAT ENDING. I new it was gonna do something like that to me but I was frothing at the mouth. MOAR!! (mostly because I’m a bit worried if a 17 and 5 yr old are now responsible for reviving the human race (even if yunno, they wait till he hits puberty), and how said 17 yr old stoner and 5 yr old are going to survive by themselves. Did anyone else live? Would they be friend or foe? Shouldn't they scavenge the train for supplies? Did Wilfred create the cw-4 or whatever to cause the necessity for his train? In such tiny despicable quarters, how does the tail section keep producing children (...I guess if there’s a will there’s a way but man). END SPOILERS
Saw it awhile ago on dramacool but has anyone watched An Ethics Lesson/Ethics of Wrath which was uploaded on myasiantv recently? Its labeled as a thriller but doubles as a black comedy. Really enjoyable in a hilariously twisted kind of way. Lee Hee-joon, Jo Jin-woong as well as Prosecutor Oh who's now in Bad Guys and other familiar faces.

Watching:
Love Cells
The Perfect Insider: tad behind
Yoo-na’s Street
Mr. Right Wanted: subs too slow but I’m diggin it.
Behind on Bad Guys, mostly because I'm waiting till I have the time to take excessive screenshots of Tae-soo.

Music: Aaaand of course Tiger JK finally does his first OST...for a drama I wasn't going to watch anytime soon (Pinnochio). Danggit.
Also: Asian-Americans in hip-hop of note: Kero One, Dumbfoundead (both Korean-American), and Mndsgn (Filipino-American I think).

Hello everyone,

I always anticipate Open Threads and think about what I want to discuss, but I hardly ever write anything when the time comes, lol! I would like to share many things. I often don't either for reasons of privacy or an inability to act on my desires (my body just won't follow my mind many times).

Watching Misaeng just makes me think about my own work environment. It can be toxic at times (and very unprofessional), but I'm trying to not let the negativity get to me. What I don't like is the lack of proper communication (starting from the top down). Also, the fact that I was passed over for a full-time position and made a fill-in (as needed) employee instead does not help. My boss created a lower position (that I would supposedly not be able to apply for) without telling me and began the hiring process in private. My second boss found out about it and told me, but I had to continue to work as if I didn't know the truth. I had to feign ignorance for weeks! When everything finally was out in the open, I had to hear silly excuses for why I wasn't offered the position (I think that my boss was trying to cover up her guilt). This happened many months ago. I don't really feel appreciated at that job and I think I'm taken advantage of.

Not job related, I've been thinking about taking a step into the world of digital art. I want to buy a simple digital drawing pad for beginners, but I feel a little reluctant. For one thing, I would feel guilty spending money. I've done some research, but the information is overwhelming. I'm someone who likes to draw, but have never had any formal art training. The digital and technological elements add other layers of complexity. Does anyone here have any advice for me? Thanks :).

Wow! I finally acted on my desire to post something! Take care, all :).

So sorry to hear about your working environment problem. May I ask in what country you're in? Have you tried to find another job, perhaps? I think changes can be scary, but it might mean it'll take you to wonderful places later…I hope you'll find your niche soon!

And sorry can't help you about the digital art, thing…but I just picked up a completely new hobby that was completely not-me recently (knitting). Certainly the initial investing aren't comparable (in the beginning knitting doesn't cost much), but the feeling of learning something new is so liberating that I think you should just go for it. Have fun!

Hi, Nomad :).

I'm living in the U.S. I'm in a civil service job. The whole process was tedious. I'm a librarian :). I'm certified to work in one county in the state in which I live and am trying to get certified elsewhere (unfortunately, not every county has rolling civil service exams for Librarian 1 positions; many only offer exams when positions become available). I am looking for other work, but it's hard.

It also doesn't help that I moved to the suburbs and need to learn how to drive (I'm not comfortable driving due to many reasons). I know I have to drive, but it's so hard. I'm older and things don't get easier, especially with regards to driving. My mobility is limited because I don't drive. I've practiced a few times, but it has not been easy and I can only do it when there is time. I commute by train. There are many obstacles right now, but I have to keep believing that things can change and that I can find a job in a healthier environment. Things such as hourly wages are very important to consider since I have to spend a lot of money on train tickets (the place where I work takes about an hour to get to by train. A ten trip pass is expensive). So I have to be more careful.

Besides all of this, I guess it doesn't help that I don't know what I really want to do and have just been forced to do one thing or another for a variety of reasons.

Thank you for your kind words. And knitting sounds fun :).

I'm sending lots of positive feelings and good thoughts about your future employment! I wish I could do something or offer a quick fix-it, but all I have to share is my love for Misaeng. (And go Librarians!!)

I'm not sure about digital art, but I used to draw/paint/make lino prints for a hobby and I found it a lot more comfortable that figuring out what to do about tablets/digital art programs. (I'm talking basic painting/drawing, like fruit baskets and stuff. I have no artistic sense but I really enjoyed it, so :D) Any kind of sketchbook/some variety of hard and soft pencils will cost you about 20$ and I just practiced drawing from reference pictures. It's actually a lot of fun! I mean, my drawings looked like crap, but fun! Painting-wise, I used acrylic and canvas which used a bit of money, but they sell these mini-sets where you can paint on a tiny canvas the size of a coaster. Those are pretty cheap and fun to experiment/paint over when they dry.

Thanks for the words of encouragement and thank you for the art tips. I've experimented with charcoal pencils and water-color pencils in the past. I still really want to try digital art. I guess I'll have to really think about things before making a decision.

Rest In Peace, Kim Ja-ok.

For those that haven’t heard the sad news, KJO died on the 16th from lung cancer (which had metastasized from her colorectal cancer, diagnosed in 2008). She was 63. My heart goes out to all her loved ones.

She had a very prolific career (some sites say she was in 94 dramas and 25 films)~ international fans probably know her best as the mom in Ojakkyo Brothers, Coffee Prince, and My Name is Kim Sam Soon. Personally, she was one of my favorite actresses. I loved her childlike smile, so full of joie de vivre, her sunny, sweet personality… and the fact that she could also totally embody a badass ahjumma.

I’m so glad that Yoon Yeo-jung talked her into going on the Croatia trip to do Noonas Over Flowers. Like many others who watched NOF, I have a lot of cherished (and now bittersweet) memories of her from that show. I’m going to hold on to the vision of how she danced like no one was watching (NOF), and how she couldn’t sleep because she was giggling so much from elation (OB). She will be missed deeply.

Hello all:

Hope all is going well with everyone! Dang it's cold! Curse you, polar vortex! Not much happening here other than cold. But yeah... finished the first draft of my chicklit novel.

Dramas:
Misaeng: YAY!!! I's friday! I can see my office pals again. Please more Seok Yul!

Pride and Preudice: Jumped in on epi 5 or 6. A good place to jump in. Choi Jin Hyuk is so seriously mature, seriously grown up mature. There is this sweet spot of maturity for actors between old veterans and young hotties and he totally nails the calm maturity of that age. Am actually liking the story...although I feared i wouldn't.

Birth of a Beauty: Saw the latest episodes. Cute but am not committed to it. Might or might not watch it, depends on what else is going on.

Bad Guys: Yeah... jumped back into this one. Oh, so what will our guy do with himself now that he knows he's actually a murderer?

Modern Farmer: Best counter-culture drama right now. Love the depiction of women's lives-- deserted, foreign, unwed, familyless, career woman, homemaker trying to be creative. And love how political issues creep in. All that belongingness stuff.

King's Face: Seo In Guk!!!!! And yes I'm liking the cross-dressing romance vibe.

What's happening with this family: YES!!! Daddy Cha has a major win. I so hope we won't have to see him die at the end. Are we venturing into bittersweet territory?

Valid Love: Anticipating!!!!!

We Got Married: Song Jae Rim is so adorable and hot. Nam Goong Min is so reserved sweet odd. Love em both...

But my heart belongs to Lee Soo Hyuk. Yep..i actually wrote a poem adoring his wonderfulness. http://www.hitrecord.org/records/1708096

Have a great weekend, all.

No Min Woo elicits a kind of giddy joy that hes trying to create explore the nature of identity. I like that he's trying to push the envelope. Am hoping he develops the perfect truest aspect of his persona in his acting.

Lee Soo Hyuk has a kind of melancholy thing happening. I almost feel he'll also be a writer and a poet or that he could give up acting for another vocation. Weird, but that's how i feel.

Posting late... for This Thanksgiving, I think I want to honor the Native American tribes who were literally wiped out by genocide and slavery. To not celebrate the false story of Thanksgiving, even if it's depressing. To remember that Patuxet peoples had a right to exist. That the Pequot had a right to say no to treaties and not be massacred. To not gloss over that history, but rather to face and honor it. To think of the way history is often glossed over and rewritten, and how we should face often the mistakes of our past.

To be thankful that systematic genocide of the Indigeneous peoples of North and South America did not always succeed. And not to celebrate the Pilgrims who participated in a bloody war.

I know people this thanksgiving want to celebrate the glossed over story, celebrate the story made up by people who were not killed or enslaved, but for me, I'm going to celebrate the people who belonged to North and South America before the Europeans came. Use it as a time to reflect on HUMAN, not just European actions.

***
Anyway, love Greatest Marriage Quite a few twists. I hate Emergency Husband, then I love him in the end. *sniff* And then I still can't read the mother--well either of the two major mothers. I hate willing to be abused mother, and also missing child mother. What is exactly their problems? I can't read them at all... Quite a few twists overall.

Kinda watching Pinnochio, but then kinda sick of eating Han morning Noon and Night. Stop inserting it randomly! Instead of collective suffering, can't we do something like the strength to overcome suffering? So says my Korean self who is writing Han into a story and then using a ton to overcome it. 'cause I bend to the rules of the country and occasionally use the story to do commentary...

Rewatched the original Liar Game Season 2. OMG, I forgot how good it was. Yes, that's definitely the better version, plus no Han inserted in for the sake of it. Also closer to the manga by far.

And a few Japanese dramas here and there... bromance in Nobunaga Concerto is delicious. Dear Sister is also fun.

TW Apple in Your Eye doesn't have 14 episodes, but considering the ending, I wish it did. TT

Question: In real life is Noble idiocy ever practical and the right thing to do? I thought of a few scenarios where it might be possible tht it's the best choice. Also is there a noble idiocy you've ever liked in a drama?

I'm happy for Mukai... he always seemed sweet and so on in interviews, Etc, so I hope his bride is happy! I wish him the best.

That leaves Tamaki Hiroshi? He isn't married IIRC. TT He smokes in real life (or I heard)... was sick for a while... but I don't remember him telling about his type. He's really good at playing neurotic characters. <3 His hobbies included swimming... he dislikes basketball, but is extremely athletic. He was a Boy Scout... He's fairly tall too.

He has a A personality according to him--he can't do nothing all day and is a hard worker. He's seen poverty when he was a struggling actor. He's also into photography as well... so he's the kind the likes to dip his brush into everything and try things out.

I'm out 'cause he's a smoker... but ya know... for ladies that do... and like this type of thing... here you go.

Mukai's future wife is Kuninaka Ryoko. They met at the set of ' Hangry'. They seem nice together.

I think Fukuyama Masaharu from Galileo is still single and he is over forty,,, cannot believe that!! He seems ageless.

Mukai and Nishijima were number 1 and 2 of ' men who women want to get married' ranking. so you can imagine the Japanese women's devastation.
The third was Fukuyama. I am not sure of Tamaki's ranking. I heard that he was engaged to a woman but the rumour tells us that they have broken up.

Use it as a time to reflect on HUMAN, not just European actions."

Hello, Yoonmi,

Like you, I don't buy into the story that has been sold to us for generations. But I can't help but detect negativity toward Europeans (a broad, blanket term). Those who came to this country and decimated much of the indigenous populations were not all Europeans. And many peoples of the world were, at one time or another, enslaved. Many people throughout the history of humanity have suffered. My parents come from an Island in Southern Europe that has been colonized and pillaged for centuries. And my family, until quite recently, has been abused by the privileged elite of their home country.

"Use it as a time to reflect on HUMAN, not just European actions." I agree. Wicked actions and good actions are not limited to one race or ethnicity. I think that cruelty is a human malady. Circumstances (timing, technology, etc.) made it easier in the early modern and modern era for certain European powers to affect greater and longer lasting damage.

I really hope that I do not come across as angry or argumentative. I really like your posts and insights. I felt strongly about what you wrote above and needed to respond. Once again, I respect you and your thoughts. So I apologize in advance if this response is taken the wrong way.

However, slavery on the scale seen in North America was a new type of event. That also gets glossed over and justified by saying slavery existed before--or even worse--slavery doesn't happen now. Human slavery never got to that scale before then.

I'm pointing out that for the Europeans that did this to those people that a lot of the time we often say, "Oh it's them and their culture", but I often think negative actions should also reflect on humanity as a whole.

It's important to realize the decimating of cultures is something humans do. But it's also important to remember the Native American tribes and the Indigenous tribes in general who were not only here first, but had a right not to be enslaved. That Thanksgiving for some is the start of genocide of their people and to respect that. And some of the people n longer have a voice because their people are literally gone. Maybe this event was the tide that showed the true meaning of the start of racism?

I think it's important to not *forget* those peoples and divert our attention away from that. To honor them. But also reflect on homo sapiens as well-what we want and how to move forward. Instead of saying, "Oh it's not us." Saying, "Yes, it's US, because humans did it--how can we move forward?"

Japanese did the Rape of Nanking--people often blame Japanese or only those Japanese--but I think humanity as a whole needs to reflect and learn from the event rather than saying not us. Too long ago... etc. That's how I think around events. We have the danger of repeating actions if we fail to understand it's us too... we are not directly responsible, we weren't there... but it doesn't protect humans from repeating those events. I'm saying And me because I'm human too.

Japanese did the Rape of Nanking–people often blame Japanese or only those Japanese–but I think humanity as a whole needs to reflect and learn from the event rather than saying not us. Too long ago… etc. That’s how I think around events. I’m saying And me because I’m human too."

I wanted to quote you at length because I agree with these words. I am not negating the suffering that the Native American peoples endured by pointing to the sufferings of others. I think my words are in line with what you just wrote in fact. Humanity is responsible. I wrote above that cruelty is a human malady. People continue to suffer to this day. I do not think that slavery and injustices have ended. Far from it, indeed.

But I can't help but think that too much attention is placed on the "white man" for every single problem today. The problems in this world are OUR responsibility (I would also say that more nefarious forces are at work, but that's something else that has to be reserved for another discussion).

I will never forget what happened to the original peoples of this land nor the suffering that continues to happen throughout the world. So I want to say that I am not burying my head in the sand or placing blame elsewhere. Thanks again.

I think it's viable say, parent to child. The scenario I thought up is that, for example a mother is trapped with an abusive spouse and wants to escape, but has neither the financial or psychological means to escape yet. They are earning up their savings to leave this person because they can't find a way to contact a Battered woman's shelter because that spouse dominates everything in her life. I don't think they should tell anyone the reason they are shielding their child, taking the hits while they are earning the money to leave. 'cause if she tells, then he's going to drain her bank account.

The hits would look like Noble Idiocy. But in that case, isn't it also survival and protecting their child? It's not about the self, then is it?

Think harder? I bet there are others out there. What makes Noble Idiocy, Noble idiocy isn't about the self, but the chain of events, yes? Doing something for the "greater good" without consulting someone?

I don't know whether it's cultural or it's just because it's a drama…but that whole scrunchy thing, my jaw dropped. There was NO solution in what so ever. WTH just happened? Hearing about Nodame Cantabile's kdrama remake got me out of my year long drama hiatus and I've jumped back with two really good shows that I love.

Tomorrow Cantabile (or is it Cantabile Tomorrow?) is so pretty. The actors are incredibly good looking, the cinematography is really clean and airy with lots of color, and I could go on about how gorgeous the sets are. But I love how underneath all that style, it's a show with so much heart and love for the characters that's evident in even the smallest details.

I was thinking that even though it's a show about classical performance, and specifically performing on the stage with grand sweeping music-- I feel like this show is so much about the nuances of the characters. It's thoughtful and most powerful when it comes to the quiet moments (which is helped so much by the A++++ acting.) When Nae-il reaches out for Yoo-jin's hand at the auditions, or the way Yoo-jin leans against the door after handing off Nae-il's dress, even the way Il-lac rolls away on the wall after his embarrassing confession (how hilarious was that?!), it says so much without doing much, if that makes sense. Ugh. I really love this show and I'm already feeling a little bereft at the thought of it ending.

(Also, how amazing is Yoon-hoo post-surgery? SO AMAZING. He's become so playful and lighthearted, and I like how it's affecting Nae-il and Yoo-jin's dynamic in a new way. It doesn't necessarily feel like the same old rehashed love triangle, but almost like Yoon-hoo himself is aware of his catalytic affect on Yoo-jin, and is using it to help propel the relationship along.)

(cont.)

The other show I've been obsessing over is Misaeng and I think that the last episode was simply amazing. Like, I can't even comprehend how the next episode will be even better-- and the thing is, I'm left feeling like this after every new episode.

Misaeng is also another quiet, thoughtful drama but it takes all of Cantabile Tomorrow's nuanced moments and basically multiplies it by a hundred and adds in even more stellar acting. Like, 'able to emote grief with a single downward twitch of an eyebrow' kind of acting.

I might be one of the few that's in favor of the longer time frame because I think it just emphasizes the workplace atmosphere, the long workday and the repetitiveness of each motion. (Though I agree that in less capable hands, the drama would seriously drag.)

If you think about it, there's only a certain amount of things that happen in a workplace, and they happen over and over again. How many times has the camera panned over the office room, with Sales Team 3 crouched over their desks, working? Or a team member going up to the roof to have a smoke/talk/beer/lecture/conference? How many times have we seen the workers chat in the break room and make coffee and talk shit about their bosses? And yet it's to the show's credit that each event feels different and change occurs with each action, even if it's not always visible.

I have so many more thoughts and feelings and emotions about this show but I don't even know how to articulate it beyond 'WOW SO GOOD' after this.

Some other things I've really enjoyed.

-Slow, in-character change for Ass't Manager Ha. I really liked the way they portrayed him blowing up, because it felt very much in a way that he was yelling at himself for letting this happen and taking his frustration out at Youny-yi. It was a scene that could have gone very differently with a different acting/direction

-How well that scene in the subcontractor firm went with the audit team battling it out with Park. I was seriously chewing my nails by the end of it and I was so proud of Geu-rae. I really think we're starting to see the person from the prologue, running through the streets of Jordan and speaking English.

-Ass't Manager Kim Dong-shik has become a personal unexpected favorite. I love how Geu-rae opened up to him and told him about his past, and how he stood up to Park's bullying. He feels so very real and I love the quiet conversations he has with Geu-rae about being a salaryman. Moreso than Chief/Manager Park, who's honestly an atypical office worker, Ass't Manager Kim feels like someone I could bump into at a Korean office some day, having a smoke with his junior.
