Blood: Jung Il-woo out, Ahn Jae-hyun in?

Hm, having some trouble locking down a vampire hero, are we? I know that Yoo Yeon-seok and Jung Il-woo were only entertaining offers to headline KBS’s new vampire medical drama Blood, but when a series has this much trouble casting, it always makes me wonder what’s wrong with it. After Yoo Yeon-seok passed on the drama because of his movie schedule (boo), the offer went to Jung Il-woo, who ultimately turned it down as well (double boooooo). And in a rather shocking move, newbie actor Ahn Jae-hyun (You’re All Surrounded, You From Another Star) is now in line to star.

Obviously I understand why the model-turned-actor might be cast to play a vampire — he certainly looks the part. It’s just that Ahn Jae-hyun just debuted as an actor earlier this year in You From Another Star (as Jeon Ji-hyun’s little brother). He picked the winning lottery ticket as far as debut projects go, and followed it up with supporting roles in the drama You’re All Surrounded and the campy movie Fashion King. He’s really likable and pretty good for a rookie, but a headlining role seems out of his league.

I’ve liked him in all (two) of his dramas, but this casting move makes me nervous for the show, and already I’m wondering how he’s going to make me believe he’s a doctor. Strangely, I have no trouble with the vampire part. If he does sign on, my fingers will be double-crossed in hopes that the director will draw the requisite depth and angst out of him.

Blood is the new project from the PD-writer team behind Good Doctor, about a vampire doctor who represses his urges for blood and treats terminally ill patients in the hospital. Ji Jin-hee (A Warm Word) plays the ambitious surgeon antagonist, and Kwon Hyun-sang (Mandate of Heaven) plays a bad vamp who faces off with the hero. The series plans to start filming by the end of the month, as long as it can secure a cast. It follows Healer on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning in February.

Another wtf move from KBS. So he's not confirmed yet? Ahn is likeable in his smaller previous roles, but has not shown enough to headline his own drama, let alone a substantial second lead. Not to be pessimistic but he won't be able to hang with the charismatic Ji Jin Hee. And no casting for females? I suppose that'll come when they finally lock in a hero.

what is with KBS casting all these untried newbies recently, there is no shortage of talented 20somethings who have been in the second lead zone for some time (i.e. they have experience and quite a bit of it) and have shown the talent, but they go for people who haven't even shown the chops?

wtf indeed.

I'm with you @pogo. There's plenty of talented twentysomething males and females that are relegated to second leads when they could be headlining dramas. In the meantime, I'll hold onto hope for them in cable dramas.

Some that come to mind, for this or in general:
Park Seo Joon (he's sadly committed to Kill Me Heal Me)
Seo Kang Joon (he's barely in the weekend drama Whats With This Family and it should end by the year's end)
Yeon Woo Jin
Kang Ha Neul
The model-actors that are better, more experienced that have yet to headline a big 3 drama: Kim Woo Bin (though I'm sure he's highly sought after), Sung Joon, Lee Soo Hyuk, Hong Jong Hyun, Kim Young Kwang.

And for girls, I'll keep crying out for Kim Ji Won, Lee Yubi, Jung So Min and Im Joo Eun.

Oh and I forgot Kim Jae Wook, who probably would've been perfect for this. Oh wells.

0

Hello!? You forgot Song Jae Rim!!! Lol Loving him in We Got Married...if it really is scripted, then I firmly believe he has the acting chops to pull this role off.

0

He was ok in YFAS, but .......leading man material? Not from what I've seen, and not yet. (serious question, who's his agency and are they powerful enough to get rookies lead roles? Even one that's been rejected a couple of times by other actors?)

This sounds a bit like a trainwreck already but I want to see what becomes of the other vampire drama, the sageuk one.

His casting definitely makes me less excited. I think he was okay in both dramas, but his characters were pretty 1 dimensional and similar to eachother + not that challenging (i havent seen the movie). And I personally didnt think his acting was that good, not bad either, more so-so.

Wait.. Jung il woo was also rumored to be the lead? I only knew abt YYS considering the role...

Gosh.. I am so out-dated. Since both actors passed it on.. I am starting to weigh down the script. I was rooting for YYS. Though i felt, he didn't have the vibe to be acting as a vampire, the guy has acting chops to boot with.

Now.. Its ahn jae hyun. Out of all the model-turned-actors, i personally think him and hong jong hyun are bad in acting. He certainly gives the vampire vibe(Though there is the Doctor part though). But acting chops and charisma is totally lacking. Like i feel he is still not ready to be a male lead yet.

Seriously what's happening with KBS and MBC these days..

I dont know if its because of supporting actors or the characterization... Don't curse me, I like KMHM but I just enjoy the scenes of CDH, ORJ and ORO,

SPY... mmmm the script is borrrrriiinnggg , I only watched four

I can understand him jumping at the chance to star in his first lead role, though, honestly I don't think he's ready yet. It would take more courage to reject this opportunity, than to accept what might end up being a big flop due to lack of developed acting skills (anyone still remember 'My Lovely Girl'?). Especially since his military service isn't too far away, he's 27 and I'm assuming he hasn't served yet.

She's so Lovable was never a huge flop though? It got bought for $200k per episode (which is the second highest ever) and was quite obviously made for overseas market considering the amount of idols. It has 400+ Million views in Chinese portals and Rain got $5 Mil for his new drama there. That's an insane amount for anyone, forget someone who's technically debuting.

I agree that bad acting can sink a drama but SSL is hardly a legitimate comparison. Ahn Jae-hyun doesnt have half the popularity of even SSL's second lead so Blood will probably not get super popular in China. But if it does well, it will rise him higher...

Low single digit ratings aren't a success for any drama....the overseas rights sale and PPL merely secured the production budget, which means the cast and crew got paid, not that the production company raked it in the way it would have had the ratings been higher.

If the subpar idol cast and shoddy script really was made to target the export market (which is the new excuse handed out by idol fans once it became clear that Korean viewers aren't going to tune in to watch idols for the sake of it), it would be much better to just skip airing such dramas on Korean channels altogether. Sell and air them abroad, and free up that public broadcast time slot for a potentially better drama.

Required fields are marked *

Low ratings are never a success only if you're looking at the Korean market. Which isn't as powerful today as the market in China and beyond. The cast and crew got paid through the dramas budget, getting bought 200k per episode isn't what they'd need to pay the cast. That's what they got for profit. Would it have been much more successful if it rated high? Yea, of course duh. But is it less successful than something that may have gotten a low teens ratings but no overseas interest? Most likely not. In fact, it's probably more successful.

As for excuse, that's a statement mostly everyone (idol fan or not, and I'm not one) gave out before SSL even started because in all likelihood, it's the truth. Skipping them off broadcast time is a very ambitious and impossible expectation. Otherwise we'd have good quality dramas 24x7 which is clearly not plausible.

That's all speculation, in the end - do we know if the drama made a profit? China may be a big new market for Korean film and tv, but I highly doubt that the money raised from overseas rights can outweigh domestic success, either in terms of the offers the cast gets later or the money made. Korea can't afford to ignore its domestic audience, and especially given the high likelihood of anti-Hallyu sentiments flaring in Japan and China they can't take overseas sale money for granted either.

The 'excuse' I mentioned is because the old excuse for casting idols with no acting talent used to be that they would raise the ratings through fans tuning in to see them. But after enough idol dramas flopped miserably and made it apparent that that ploy wasn't working, it became "overseas fans are idiots who will pay to see their favourite idols in dramas, so idols get cast for them!". Logically, if Korean viewers want none of them, it makes more sense to just sell the drama abroad and leave it there. No need to air it in Korea at all.

0

"Offers cast gets or money they make?" Well... I dunno, since I juust mentioned Rain getting 5.5 million bucks for a drama role after SSL so that kinda answers that question. I don't doubt for a moment how influential the Chinese market is which is why so many fans find it so necessary to prove that their favourites is sooo popular and loved there. When tides shift and Hallyu dies down, then they'll probably start worrying about the domestic market again. For now, it's definitely China most are aiming for.

Idol fans have always been the younger bunch instead of ahjummas tuning in. Therefore the online ratings are huge for idol dramas. But I'm amused that someone's preference (even if it's just because their favourites is in it) is apparently deemed as idiotic/ or they called idiots. Oookay... As for not airing such dramas in Korea, that's just ridiculous because one can never tell when an idol drama turns into a hit. Dream High being a big example of that.

Anyways, I think we'll just have to agree to disagree. I don't judge success solely on Korean ratings or acting. In my world, money talks and so success = money. Which SSL - for example - got in abundance.

my lovely girl really sucked. stopped watching it after the 5th ep. what's with the lead girl? she looked nice in heirs but they deliberately downed her sexuality in this show. she looked dim and dumb unlike that vavavoom starlet in heirs.

a drama has to earn money locally, in terms of high ratings, advertisements, etc. to recoup production costs. there is no such thing as "we made this for the export market", which is just an excuse to hide the fact that their drama laid an egg because it sucked. you cannot always predict the overseas market so you have to make sure that your product sells in your country first before it sells abroad.

I thought Ahn Jae-hyun was the weakest link in YAAS - that had some very inspiring performances even if the drama wasn't all that. He was quite adorable in YFAS though.

But it's too early for him. He lacks the acting chops for a male lead unless they can get a huge actress to co star with him. I think that's unlikely. This drama sounds like a mess anyway. And vampires are so yesterday lol.

lol I'm loving all these comments...

I'm wondering where the defenders of bad actresses are, you know, the ones who insist dramabeans commentariat gives a free pass to hot guys with questionable acting skills while 'only' criticising women.

Probably easier for them to ignore this post (no one here likes the idea of AJH taking on this role) than deal with the idea that they may be wrong (since we do not conveniently fit into their preconceived idea of 'sexist drama fangirls excusing all the cute flower boy oppas for poor/mediocre acting but can't forgive it when it's a girl who can't act!')

Required fields are marked *

Honestly I was thinking the same thing. And most people here aren't even saying he's a bad actor, just that it's early for a lead.

But say anything about a girl getting a lead after coming off a completely panned performance and somehow the commentator is automatically anti-feminist and hormonally driven.

As for this, I haven't seen any if his shows so I have no opinion on him. I did wonder if maybe IJW would have to do army soon and if that would conflict - although to go in to it with Watchman being his last performance would be a bummer.

I'm not particularly excited by this premise but I don't hate it either. It would need something special to stand out from other vamp shows....but that doesn't seem to likely based on how much trouble they're having with the cast.

Required fields are marked *

It's possible that the people commenting never watched any of his projects so they're not in a position to make such remarks, and thus the lack of criticisms of his acting. I didn't so the only thing I can say is that it's too early for him.

Anyway, I thought the character was supposed to be in his late thirties according to what I read before. So either the script is horrible so everyone turned it down, or they had to scrimp on production costs so that's why they're going for Ahn Jae-hyun. I mean, what are the chances of doing a Mr. Back? You almost never find a strong cast this late.

Personally I think this is a bad move for the production company. Where are they going to get any star power for their drama if they cast a newbie for the lead role? They may struggle to get a big name actress to act beside him too so it's highly likely that Ji Jin-hee will be the only draw of the show.

Well, at least people on this thread aren't insinuating that he slept his way to the top. Or that he has a sponsor. Or talking about how he's ~not that pretty. I mean, you do have a point, in that people don't think he deserves the role, but I'd argue that the tenor of their comments is entirely different from a lot of those on the Go Sung-hee post, for instance. At least so far. Then again, her casting was way more iffy and she's not just green, she's really bad. On the other hand, this guy doesn't have a big fan base yet, so there aren't going to be many ~oppa!! comments.

Regardless, I guess I'm saying that sexism is a lot more complicated than just criticizing women and not men? I think it's a bit much to take this thread and declare that there is no sexism (or come to that, sexists) at all in this fandom, or to call out people who try to talk about perceived cases of it. Just because we can recognize that there are men who don't deserve leads, doesn't mean there's no difference in our gendered expectations of actors and actresses, how we think it's okay to talk about them, and so on. Not saying everyone's a sexist here; I'm just saying that sexism is complex and systemically pervasive, especially when dramas themselves are so entrenched in heteronormative orthodoxy.

I think it's more to do with the lack of experience AJH has. Sure if you compare him to Sung Joon, KWB or LSH - they have way more experience whether its a side character, main or second lead.

AJH though he was cute in YFAS - he doesn't really have the experience to convince us that he's good enough for the main lead. I guess we just have to wait and see when it comes out.

Required fields are marked *

Well, honestly, that's actually a problem for me.

The post right before this one is on Sung Joon getting yet another second lead role...so I can't help but be a little underwhelmed at this news after just coming from the news that one of the more promising new actors is getting cast as second fiddle yet again. Ahn Jae Hyun, though, would be someone that I would welcome as a second lead or as, perhaps, a lead to smaller cable drama. This role still seems too big for him.

That said, I'm not that excited for this drama in the first place so it's no loss to me if he takes it. But casting a must-see actor could have made me want to watch it. Oh well.

He looks the part but I'm not sure if he has the acting chops. I personally think kim jae wook would be perfect for this role he would make a very convincing vampire
and the boy deserves a leading role by now,oh and even though this is probably not gonna happen I would love it if moon chae won was offered the lead female role, preferably her role similar to her bad-ass character in nice guy,and kim jae wook to play a wounded and depressed vampire and they both fall in love and console each other. Gaah sorry I spend too much time on asianfanfics but yeah those two would be such an awesome pair. It's boring and overused, basically copies vampire prosecutor, and I think AJH is just to young to play that sort of part.
I think the plot has promise if maybe he's starting out as an intern or something and is struggling to make it as a doctor while struggling with... vampirism. Omo this would be so cute! But now I've psyched myself up for this adorkable version and they're probably going to go with the lame one and I'll be so disappointed.

What I want from this, using AJH, is Doctor Misaeng Vampire! It would be great!!

kbs really screwed up with this casting if AJH take this role. AJH is not ready for leading role, especially he doesn't have charisma and material as lead actor in this time. he need time to lear and time to build his own charisma for leading role, but not this time, not yet
