Ji Hyun-woo to romance Angry Mom Kim Hee-sun

I wonder if this pairing will work, but it’s mostly the premise of this drama that sells me. Now that MBC’s new heartwarming mother-daughter drama Angry Mom has secured Kim Hee-sun (Wonderful Season) and Kim Yoo-jung (Secret Door) to star, the hunt is on for Mom’s leading man. The offer is currently out to Ji Hyun-woo, who made his army comeback in the disappointing rom-com Trot Lovers last year, and could really use a winning romantic role right about now.

The drama stars Kim Yoo-jung as a high-schooler who sticks up for her bullied friend and becomes the victim of bullying in turn. Kim Hee-sun is her mom, a former Busan badass who got pregnant in her teens and raised her daughter as a single mom. When Mom hears about the bullying that’s going on in her daughter’s school, she takes matters into her own hands and goes undercover as a high school student to fix the problem. It’s simultaneously mortifying and endearing, and rife with comedic potential.

After School’s Lizzy co-stars as one of the bullies who makes Kim Yoo-jung’s life hell, and if he signs on, Ji Hyun-woo will play Kim Yoo-jung’s teacher, who then develops a befuddling loveline with Undercover Mom when she arrives as a new student. It’s Never Been Kissed but with kids! I already love the idea of him thinking she’s just another of his students when in fact it’s a noona romance. This is going to be confusing in the best way.

Obviously we’re all going to have to suspend our disbelief that Kim Hee-sun can pass for a high-schooler without raising some eyebrows, but eh, it’s not like any of dramaland’s crossdressers do any better at making their transformations believable. And she is one of those actresses who (no fair) looks the same in her late thirties as she did in her teenage debut.

I’m actually pretty excited about the show because it combines high school drama, undercover hijinks, and a heartwarming family dynamic that’s sure to get me in the heart. The romance is something they’ll have to get me to warm up to, but I’d love it if they could pull it off. ‘Cause a badass sassy mom who goes through all that to protect her daughter deserves a hottie teacher as a reward. I’m quite sure it’s cosmically even-steven.

Angry Mom follows Kill Me, Heal Me on Wednesdays and Thursdays in March.

For a minute I was scared that you were going to tell me he was another student.

Since THAT's not the case, I'm still looking forward to this. Bring on the confusion! We'll make it RAIN confusion.

Oooh...now I'm remembering Rain as a student. I still get teary-eyed over Sang Doo. Sigh.

I wonder why Kim Hee Sun as a high school student instead as a temporary teacher roles? I know she was beautiful but to be a high school student's image, won't it be too much weird for her.
Anyway, I can't wait to watch this comedian drama because Kim Hee Sun and Kim Yoo Jung are my top 10 favourite Korean actress.

So... Teacher is going to be courting his student-not-student? Not sure what I think of that.

I thought it was fantastic with simply the mom-daughter-bully conflict. Must there be a romance in everything, or is it because it's a Kdrama?

I think this can be like Indian movie Main Hoon Na where the hero goes back to college to investigate some terrorist activity but he says that he dropped out in his college days but now wants to continue with his studies. It could be like that..

I think if Kim hee Sun can romance Lee Min Ho, then we can surely warm up to her romancing Ji Hyun Woo. I hope he'll have his black hair back!

I second that thought. This way It looks realistic and the story makes lil more sense. It is one of those Bollywood movies which I still like to watch whenever it airs on TV.
SRK was too cool back then much better than his recent offerings like Happy New Year!

haha can't believe it's being compared to Main Hoon Na.. I hope the plot is less ridiculous xD and koreans do manage to look ageless anyone outside the country wouldn't bat an eye to see a 30+ korean person pass off as a high schooler or college student. srk on the other hand had a hard time passing off his age spasms as dimples

Happy New Year was a horrible movie.Comparing him to Amir Khan (both of them began their career around the same time ) has progressed so much as an actor,he takes different roles everytime. SRK did an awesome job in "Chak de India",i wish he pick more roles like that instead of movies like HNY

Wow, now that you compared this drama to Main Hoon Na, I HAVE to watch it!! I never though of comparing the two but that is so true!! It's the same although no offense to SRK, he couldn't pass exactly as another high schooler! But he is still the king so I guess it's okay, as long as the rest of the movie was interesting. :P
Wow, this drama can have a lot of potential so hopefully they don't disappoint us. :):):)
This for some reason reminded me a little of High School King of Savvy where the high schooler falls in love with a woman way older, but luckily this is the Teacher, not a student cause then it would have weirded me out a little. Good thing...

The romance sounds a little like never been kissed. Personally I think the teacher needs to be a little older, the lead actress is a mother after all and if their romance is going to work then he'll need to be a father figure to the daughter. Idk though it seems like it could be a little creepy.

I don't think the teacher is supposed to be THAT young, just that Ji Hyun Woo happened to say yes (probably after it was offered to other people). Actors play older than themselves all the time.

This sounds like the Japanese drama that was made last year(?) with the leading lady a 35 year old who goes undercover to solve high school problems like bullying. I LOVE Ji Hyun Woo, so I will give it a try. However, there's a 7 year age gap between them. I don't think the chemistry will work. The drama will probably fail. But at least we'll have 2 months of him on the screen! Yay!!

Chemistry doesn't have anything to do with age. 7 years is nothing. IMO, chemistry is 90% good acting and a great example of that is Kim Hee Ae and Yoo Ah In - I frankly thought that they looked like mom and son in their sexy pictorial but they made it work (and then some!) in their drama because the acting was just spot on.

Of course, Kim Hee Sun ain't no Kim Hee Ae so there's that...

Yeap! I wish Kim Hee Sun kisses Lee Min Ho crazily more than 1 kiss but that is her. Talking about chemistry, I think there is a lot in Faith. Their silent motions like eyes starring (especially, Lee Min Ho's eyes is killing me), holding hands, caring each others etc.......that's why until now we still have a lot to talk about in Soompi forum?

Age difference is not directly correlated to onscreen chemistry. They either have it or not; age not a factor. Example of perfect chemistry: A Witches Romance, damn what a hot noona romance! Seriously ;)

I just need the story to be plausible and the drama well executed. Everything else, like getting to watch gorgeous Ji Hyun-woo parade in front of the screen for 16 eps or so is a bonus.

Chemistry doesn't have anything to do with age. IU had it with Jo Jong-seok (13 year age gap) and Jung Eun-ji had it with Shin Sung-rok (11 year age gap), and as pointed out above, Yoo Ah-in/Kim Hee-ae.....a difference of seven years between two actors who are both in their thirties is hardly anything.

Thank you very kamsa for giving me such a huge laugh! It's hilarious (and sad) how some people can SERIOUSLY be hung up over such a triviality as an age gap between adult leads. This Drama potentially features a teacher developing inappropriate feelings for someone he thinks is his student, but all that worries you is "ewww, she's seven years older than Oppa!"? It's always a good day when I get to use the word risible, so thanks again.

Personally I like my leads to be within the same decade, but it's not really a concern. I definitely though am a bit worried that he's going to like "mom" when she's a student. A high school one....

I have a lot of issue with high schoolers paired with post-college age partners (regardless of gender).

haha completely agree. as long as both concerned are of legal age it doesn't matter squat who's older and by how much or what their gender is or their sunsign jeez you'd think by now people would realize chemistry is more subtle than that and acting and story matter more than the actors' bio

or

"Argh, she's trying so hard to act young."

I love the premise way too much. As long as it keeps its fun side, I think the message is equally as important as it is realistic.

But I'm not too sure about Ji Hyun-woo. I actually liked the second half of Trot Lovers and found him good at times. I thought he was mostly out shadowed by Eun-ji. My gut feeling tells me he won't have good chemistry with Kim Hee-sun but then again, I haven't seen them together yet. There's tons of time for them to prove me wrong and I'll surely be watching this for the females anyway.

I just wanted to jump in to say that I've always found something really dehumanizing about calling women "females." There are so many words you could use to refer to them. You could have said the female celebrities or the actresses or the women or the ladies but females by itself makes it sound like you're talking about animals or creatures of some sort. I'm sure you don't mean anything bad by it (you're not the only person who does that, unfortunately) but I wanted to just make you aware that some people are made uncomfortable by that kind of terminology.

I can't say anything about Mandy, but some ofus db readers don't have such good English skills/it's not our first language.

Obviously we try to avoid using words that are. offensive, like swear words and all, but not everyone knows about a word that is inoffensive on its own, like female, being considered bad if said on its own. Even those of us who manage decent English don't always know that, why scold her like this for it?

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I wasn't scolding her - I was trying to point out in a levelheaded way that using that term can be considered offensive by some people and I explained why I hold that view to help her and anyone else understand that I'm not just trying to jump down her throat. I also pointed out in both my comments that I did not think she was intentionally trying to be offensive or demeaning - I just wanted to explain why I take issue with people calling women females as clearly as possible.

But I didn't consider that English is not the first language of many DB commenters and I appreciate you pointing that out. I hope my comments will still be able to help someone realize that that can be a problematic word though, depending on how it's used.

Speaking as a native English speaker, I was as startled as anyone else to learn that some people find "female" dehumanizing when used as a noun. Of course, I use it mainly as a formal term in discussions of history, science, or feminism.

I tend to find much more off-putting the constant use of the word "girl" to refer to adult "women." That is sexism of a very old-fashioned sort, and I am careful never to use it in conversation unless I am around people who are used to that usage in a non-condecending way. And, of course, it's something you have to get used to dealing with Kdramas.

0

Also I have the same feelings about men being called just "males" as well, in case that wasn't clear. However I see the "females" thing more often and I think, truthfully, that it is caused by society's continued lack of respect and appreciation for and rampant objectification of women. Society worldwide continues to treat and frame women as objects or ideas or appendages in some man's story instead of as whole human beings in their own right and one of the easiest ways to reflect that is to refer to them by their gender "female" instead of acknowledging their personhood through speech by calling them "women."

I'm sorry if this sounds a bit like a rant and I'm not trying to single you out - I just see this a lot, especially from other women, and I find it a bit sad and disturbing. You don't have to stop saying it just because I don't like it but I urge you to really think about the ramifications behind your use of "female" instead of women and to look at when you use it. I've noticed that people are more likely to use "females" when they're saying something disparaging about women (eg. Females are so catty" or "I can't deal with females because they're so emotional"). The use of it in your post doesn't seem negative though, fortunately, so perhaps you are just accustomed to using it as a substitute.

Yes, and there are few words more abused in English today than "PC." It originated as a term on college campuses where the local activists would scold people about trivial sexism or racism. Nowadays, in the vast majority of conversations, it is used in a sneering fashion by some conservative or other who resents your being offended by their flagrantly racist or sexist comments. I gave up using it to complain about actual racism years ago. The real racists have co-opted it.
