Odds and Ends: All hail the power of the squee

girlfriday: So, what’s up?

javabeans: The comment count, that’s for sure. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but since I get emailed every time a comment is posted, let’s just say my inbox is exploding over Healer comments.

girlfriday: Oh, I’ve noticed. It’s hard to miss. Kinda like someone having a block party in your front yard. It’s fun to see Healer bringing people out of the woodwork. De-lurkers everywhere!

javabeans: Yes, I find that a nice side effect. Even if Healer recaps are bringing in ten times the comments on average recaps, I don’t think there are necessarily ten times the readers — it’s more that the existing readers are suuuuper excited and motivated to comment.

girlfriday: Yeah, just ten times the fervor.

javabeans: Okay, maybe there’s a little more than the average readership, since it IS an exciting show and all. But it’s interesting how it compares to a show with actually ten times the readership. Say like with You From Another Star, which had a much broader audience and also high comments on a regular basis — but it was in the high-and-popular range, not the wtf-is-going-on-here outlier range for Healer.

girlfriday: There are just some shows that are disproportionately popular on Dramabeans, like The King 2 Hearts and City Hunter. Who knows why. No really, do you know why?

javabeans: I think shows like that have a certain cult factor, something that inspires a really violent emotional reaction — which may be related to but isn’t synonymous with production value or quality or acting. I’m thinking the way you got excited about Buffy and Veronica Mars, and while there were other really good shows out there that I liked, I wasn’t going to spend my week obsessing about The West Wing, you know?

girlfriday: OMG, I STILL think about what happens to Buffy after the finale, and how Angel and Spike run off into the sunset together. And it hurts my heart to even think about Veronica not being with Logan at all times.

javabeans: See, I feel like she needs to maybe not be with him all the time, because they bring out the best-worst in each other, and that’s just not safe for society.

girlfriday: WHAT ARE YOU EVEN TALKING ABOUT, YOU CRAZY PERSON?!

javabeans: Why am I the crazy one for wanting Veronica to have a stable, happy life? But ahem. Back to Healer.

girlfriday: Okay fine, it also hurts my heart to even think about Healer not being with Young-shin at all times.

javabeans: Aieeeeeee I knoooooow. I’m not one for codependent relationships, but I really think you could make an argument for why these two should always be in touching range.

girlfriday: Actually, I think I squee more when she has moments with Bongsookie. And when Bongsookie gets jealous of Healer, because it’s hilarious and messes with my mind.

javabeans: I can see why the fans are totally going nutso, because this drama hits that balance of forward plot momentum, tension-filled romance, fast-paced writing, and characters you wish were real. I do think the Korean fans feel this as well, that it has a special pull even though the ratings are just okay. It was super hilarious to me how I read Korean fans talking about us on DC Inside, and translating Dramabeans comments into Korean, and their foremost realization was “Wow, they [international fans] react just like we do!”

girlfriday: They’re super excited about DB excitement about Healer, and like true drama addicts, they were all, “Awesome, something else to read while I wait for the next Healer episode!”

javabeans: It was amusing to read them posting updates on our steadily increasing comment count, like the Dramabeans ticker-watch, while over here on DB the commenters were saying the same thing about the numbers. And when I tweeted about it, the gallery caught on and commented that I’d noticed them noticing us, and I almost commented on that, but stopped before we got stuck in an infinite time-space loop.

girlfriday: It’s like a bizarre funhouse of mirrors. Though after a while you realize that both sides are just commenting on the number of comments.

javabeans: Then you get 100 comments saying things like “Only 100 more comments, guys!” Maybe it’s a good time to suggest (gently!) that while a super-high comment count is fun, maybe we could dial back the number of postings that are solely there to increase comment counts.

girlfriday: But still have fun and do all the squeeing you want!

javabeans: Yes, squeeing is welcome! I don’t want to be the hall monitor, because any show that gets everyone having this much fun should be enjoyed. It’s just that we’ve broken the record now, so maybe we can keep the discussion to how we feel about the show? Because goodness knows, there’s enough to talk about!

girlfriday: I could certainly write 3000 comments about how much that last cliffhanger sucked.

javabeans: Because WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. OMG. How could you leave us like that.

girlfriday: Well I guess it worked then.

javabeans: Clearly, since it’s Saturday and you and I are still talking about Healer.

I hadn't been paying much attention to Healer (because there's only so much time!). But OMG, the comment counts.. are they for real?

Well, with so much squee surrounding it, I may need to check it out. Thanks GF and JB! :)

Hi isabel
It's because we'd like more people to consider giving Healer a try, that we are upping the comment count. It's to give the show more attention and take it from under the radar for some viewers who might enjoy it. Do watch it if you can and drop by to say, "Hi!" on the Healer thread. :)

I must be one of the few that doesn't watch Healer and I'm not interested in reading recaps. Eek. I don't know why, but if it's not a rom com I'm typically not drawn in. There are some outliers to this (Pride and Prejudice), but in general, I skip.

Javabean said: "Say like with You From Another Star, which had a much broader audience and also high comments on a regular basis — but it was in the high-and-popular range, not the wtf-is-going-on-here outlier range for Healer." Can't agree with u more. I wasn't here during YWCFTS was being aired to know about its "was in the high and popular range", but "the wtf is going on here outlier range for healer' was what I felt whenever I came here to read healer thread.

No offence but it was like some people were trying to bring JCW soompi thread here to camp and spread his name and show. Their irrelevant long rants really turned me off from continuing to read what other people were commenting about the drama. And sometimes I even felt that DB was being hosted by some JCW fans. Their trying hard were causing some misleadings that this show was really great but it wasn't, in SK and overseas.

So please enjoy it the way it really is, and let other people enjoy reading decent comments about it. Please return DB to its original.

I am a hardcore JCW fan, but I only put a few comments on each episode's recap. I think his popularity has recently increased due to Healer. I check his Instagram, and the number of followers is steadily increasing 1000+ per day.

@Queenbee - It's all part of the fan craze, yo. :)

Say, if you were in a concert with a very dedicated set of fans, irregardless of their number, you can't very well expect them to stay put quietly in their seats now, can you? No, they'll be up and about, kicking and screaming their lungs out. That's just how it is with fans. They make a lot of noise.

And those rants in the comment section are actually very insightful posts that a lot of people enjoy reading, including myself. I'm very sorry to hear that you find them off-putting. Things have been a little hectic (an understatement) in the Healer threads with all the excitement going on. But it's hard to suppress the hype when so many people have very active in posting. Like I said, it's the fan CRAZE. In fact, the words 'I've gone crazy', 'I'm insane', 'I'm totally nuts' and such have been thrown around the Healer threads countless times. It's not like we're unaware to our own whacky behavior.

Rest assured though that when this all ends, we will recede peacefully (or so I suppose). :)

@Queenbee

+1.

Thankyou for saying your thoughts. Its exactly what i feel too.

When you see this much fan craze(only in here) and ask yourself, "Is it really that good?". The answer comes as NO.
the excessive kyaness is repelling.

And looking at the comments, doesn't look like the subtle message in JB and GF's post is even being noticed by the majority.

I kinda understand what Queenbees is talking about. I also became quite hesitant in reading the comments much less posting one. It's hard to sift through all the squeeing to find a good insightful analysis of the drama. It felt like homework so I stopped reading. And I did not post my thought on the drama just because with so many comments in there, I am sure my thoughts have already been written by someone else so I did not bother.

@Queenbee, I am the monitor of the Ji Chang Wook Soompi Thread, and what you have written is factually incorrect. I know pretty much everyone who comments on our Thread, and the funny thing is that I don't see hardly ANY of their names in all these DB recap comments to date. Your 'observation' throws shade on the people that mostly keep their comments and squeeing inside the Ji Chang Wook Soompi Thread, because they know their voices would be lost in the whirlwind that these DB comment sections have turned out to be. Please do a little bit of research before you decide to paint us all in a negative light with the same wide brush. Thank you.

Love how this show is bringing out all the delurkers (me included :D)! It has been a long time since such a drama came and swept all of us away ; and if the remaining 8 episodes stay close to the awesomeness from the previous 12 (and granting us an OST by JCW for the extra swoons :*), this show is going to be my favourite kdrama ever.

I'm curious though, is there anyone out there who find Healer not up to their drama expectations.. Kind of a buzzkill to ask such a question though but I really hope there aren't many. Hahaha. I'm so emotionally invested in this show it would seem a bit weird if there are people who aren't enjoying the Healer ride heh :/

Healer is the one who brought me back to kdramaland. The last one that made me so "crazy in love" for a show was Innocent Man.. and I was so devastated(lol!) when he enlisted. And I lost faith on LMH after FAITH and THE HEIRS.. so I was on a hiatus before this. Haha.. though I watched 2 dramas last year but it's not like Healer.

My problem is.. what will happen after the show ended?? Am I the only one who wanted the show to be fast-paced and at the same time don't want it to end? *sigh*

I've accomplished a lot of firsts after jumping on the Healer bandwagon which is rather unusual because I picked this show up just for kicks when the first episode was aired, tried not to put too much hopes in it, and by the third episode I found myself completely sucked in haha! <3

1) Healer was the first drama I watched in raw without subs, not having any idea what is it all about before downloading the subs much later in the day. The wait at the beginning was SO SO SO SOOO TOUGH. I'm SO glad subs are out much faster now!

2) This is also the first drama I ended up rewatching twice before the new episode comes out, a new milestone because I hardly watch an episode more than once haha

3) I've de-lurked myself and started commenting more on DB! Healer made me crawl out of my shell and I also find myself F5-ing DB more lately D:

4) I don't usually watch RM and subconsciously found myself marathoning the episodes with JCW in it at work! Those were probably my second and third RM episode ever :')

5) Sageuks were never my thing, but the power of Healer has convinced me to watch Empress Ki. My first sageuk ever! Can't believe I chose a 51-episode long drama instead of a much shorter one. :o I'm still getting used to watching sageuks but it isn't all too bad so far heh.

I guess point 4 and 5 are mainly due to my growing crush on JCW anyways. I had no idea he is such a talented singer-actor till Healer came along.. oh boy *.*. Guess I was pretty late to the party.

I don't think I'm the only one who experienced such firsts in life *grins* It feels really great to see everyone spazzing out and squeeing irl over this drama because at least I know I'm not alone. <3 All hail the power of Healer! xxxxxx

I didn't watch Healer until 8 episodes already aired. DB was generating so much buzz during Healer recap comments that I said, ok, I'm bored, let's try it.....and watched all 8 in 2 days. Now I'm all caught up... and waiting.

I'm with you on #5!! I don't watch sageuks in general too but JCW!!! (The first sageuk was Moon Embrace the Sun b/c of YFAS & Kim Soo Hyun -- Empress Ki is the second sageuk I'm watching....all b/c of Healer!!)

Healer is just awesome! :)) It's been so long since I watched something that doesn't give you those normal drama clichés. (Well, most of the time) This show is something you can predict where the story is heading, and yet it'll keep you guessing. :>

Can't wait for the next episode! I miss you, Healer-ya! <3

to be honest i find the thread organization by self appointed pseudo-mods in the recap posts to be slightly excessive. i personally prefer the old-fashioned way of commenting. as a reader i actually find it more fulfilling to read but i think both types can co-exist.

if find the constant spam of comments counting, announcing and celebrating the comment count really tiring though and a lot of good posts are drowned out by it because at some point i usually give up scrolling through the excited counting.

I thought it would be excessive, but dont mind the sub posting and people trying to organize it to help others out. Glad someone is trying to make it easy on others to go through the comments.

Appreciate everyone just being helpful in the community and always grateful for the genuine kindness. Dont mind both or whatever makes people comfortable.

I love the break in reading viewpoints to read about the excitement on the comment count for a short moment. It makes me smile actually because i feel their excitement and makes me excited too because they are just expressing their love for Healer.

That is one of the reason I decided to de-lurk for the first time in years because many people were expressing their love and excitement and wanted to show my gratitude and support also for Healer.

It is a fun ride in this Healer community and loved everyone's comment no matter how small. Thanks for making the comment read, extra fun and exciting.

This post is very interesting -- the way the Internet can bring different fan groups together (Korea vs International, etc), AND the way the lurkers come out of the woodwork. I read plenty of recaps and watch dramas -- but in the last two years, I've only really commented on two -- YFAS and Healer. (And if I had watched it during its airtime, I bet I would have commented on I Hear Your Voice b/c that show was great too, and Answer Me 1997).

I love Healer so much, and it's fun to see all the other comments and I feel like I'm sharing a little in the excitement. I don't have any drama watching friends, so this is like my equivalent.

I can't wait for Monday!! I love it so much I can't wait for subtitles. (Thankfully, I can understand about 70% of it -- but not any of the complex stuff). I'mma watch it raw, then watch it subtitled later.

I can't wait for Monday either! Tomorrow!!

Good morning (my time!) ALL,
It is most certainly Monday for me and I'm very happy to be reading the different points of view here and knowing also that so many of us commenting on this thread are waiting for the show to air in about 14 hours' time.

Sorry, it's exciting and I can't *not*, do a countdown :) .

I admit that the Healer threads have grown like a luxuriant wild vine and it's a maze in which finding comments is like locating buried treasure. That was the reason we thought we'd try bringing some topics/discussion together with a Name, so that readers can find Named sub-threads. So just CTRL F and locate something by a name and you don't have to trawl or dig everywhere.

Since it is a free-for-all experiment, and no one is obliged to name or use those sub-threads, it will continue to be massively messy and amazingly maze-like always, but even in that is half the fun. I never know when I will come upon a gem of a comment as I patiently scroll. :)

Anyway, comments are 2,939 at the moment and I believe, because 3,000 is near, it will look like a nice round numbered total is a fun target to reach. I believe that after this Odds and Ends article, more of us are mindful of what we post so that the comments will more well-considered ones, but also with the feels of "I can't stand it, the show's just a few hours away!" variety.

So I'm off to enjoy the read, to enjoy waiting with this community for the show and to do more squeeing together! :)

JB and GF, you two are truly diplomats in disguise! I love the way you said what you had to say to keep the website true to itself, yet without offending anyone or discouraging the newly de-lurked. You could work for the State Department with those mad skills; but then where would we Kdrama lovers be? Keep up the good work.

And GF, I'm with you all the way on Veronica Mars. That is the only American show I watched from first episode to last.

I too wondered about the crazy love that we all feel. I so wish that Healer had been produced with both an acting director and a camera director like Misaeng was. The first few episodes were especially lacking in the fighting scenes. I felt like they were trying to hide poor action skills by the actors or their stuntmen. Now I believe it was just poor camera work and editing. Perhaps this may have put off many potential Korean viewers of Healer before the story line really took off.

And this drama is so full of standard tropes that it's hard to believe that it works so well. It has the birth secrets, the good vs. evil brothers, the hero with a secret identity, the dumb gangster underlings, the perky unsuspecting heroine, the kindly adoptive father etc. But tropes are tropes for a reason. They resonate with us on a deeper level, or we wouldn't keep going back to them. The themes of loneliness, betrayal, opportunism, overcoming difficulties, and redemption are universal. At some point in each of our lives, we have experienced something of which we are reminded by these stories. And Healer also has enough smarts to not take itself too seriously; for example, the scene where our hero ducks around a corner only to re-emerge as our superhero, a la Superman.

The fan frenzy reminds me of that around Boys Over Flowers, which had even poorer production values, but had that crack feeling. I noticed in Episode 12 of Healer a little mistake where PMY answers the phone a few seconds before she brings it up to her ear. I hope we don't see a similar deterioration in quality overall now, due to cast and crew exhaustion.

(So there! See how I opportunistically used your Odds & Ends to discuss my own ideas about Healer, lest my comments get lost in the 3000+ comment shuffle? That's how it's done! :D )

Thank you again, JB & GF and all minions for making a safe place for the reasonably intelligent discussion of all things Kdrama!

What a lovely comment. I've been contemplating whether I too should offer my thoughts on the whole Healer squeefest - of both the good and the bad - and express my relief that JB & GF have said what they have said with great humor, subtlety, and grace. But no need now as you've said everything I wished to say!

I'm always thankful for JB & GF for providing us with this great place to hang out, and of course the other contributors as well, but it's the perceptive and well-reasoned comments that give me the warm and fuzzy feeling of knowing I'm in the company of kindred sprits.

Oh and I totally agree that this madness is reminiscent of BOF... the frenzy over that first kiss when JP got out of the car but the sun was behind them so one actually couldn't see anything was truly a sight to behold. Ah the fond memories...

Maybe since a lot of dramas are being aired nowadays, there's a wide variety to choose from. Viewers get to be divided, affecting ratings of weekday shows in Korea (I think it's still different for weekend shows). Thus, good dramas like Healer tend to be underrated.

Now to Healer... I don't know why but there really is just something different on how JCW and PMY deliver their on-screen romance. It really makes one giggle and feel all good inside (too much that I sometimes smile like an idiot while travelling and remembering the past episodes). For me, this drama is definitely my favorite this period - there are a lot of drama episodes stored in my smartphone but I tend to drop watching all of them once a new episode of Healer comes up.

And the cliffhangers that show produces! Way to make you agonize about wanting to watch the next episode through your entire week. Arg.

Anyways, I'm glad a lot of people comment about Healer. Does that mean a lot watches it despite the so-so ratings in Korea? Well, whatever. I'm still going to watch it 'til the end. :-)
